or 26 years, the Winter Texan Expo has been dedicated to connecting Winter Texans, Converted Texans, and Valley retirees with every type of service imaginable. The tradition of bringing entertainment, health screenings, over 200 vendors, and much more--under one roof at the McAllen Convention Center--continued January 15-16. Last year’s Expo saw roughly 8,000 visitors, with attendees entering the site as soon as the double doors opened and filling every seat for the live music performances. This year broke all records, with 9,774 fun-seekers attending the 26th annual event. Presented by South Texas Health System, the largest healthcare provider in Hidalgo County, the two-day event offered the public information on where

orty RGV 1st Responders gathered at Pleasant Valley Resort in Mission January 8 for a Stop-the-Bleedcertified class taught by members of the Trauma Regional Advisory Council-V. The instructors included Cristobal Silva from Mission Regional Hospital, Ruben Pena from Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, and Jorge Gomez, RN, from Harlingen Medical Center. These hospitals are part of the Prime Health Care group. Instructional training, demonstrations, and practice were provided on the use of tourniquets, wound packing, and hemostatic quick-clot products. The training prepared all of the attendees for those times they face an emergency and can be valuable information because many of our Winter-Texan residents are on blood thinners. Bystanders and 1st Responders will be the first ones on the scene before the arrival of professional emergency personnel and can save

the life of a person who is bleeding. In an emergency, a person can die as a result of blood loss within five minutes, so it’s important to quickly stop the bleed by learning the steps to keep an injured person alive until further medical care is provided. The Stop-the-Bleed campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff and the White House. The purpose of the program is to better prepare the public to save lives by raising awareness about basic actions we can take to stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and manmade and natural disasters. Advances made by military medicine and research in hemorrhage control during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have informed the work of this initiative, which exemplifies translation of knowledge back to the homeland for the benefit of the general public. •

Harlingen Neighborhood Food Pantry Rummage Sale set for February 2 Special to Welcome Home RGV

hroughout the year, the Harlingen Neighborhood Food Pantry serves an average of 1,300 clients per month and distributes approximately 59,000 pounds of food. They also distribute baby items, clothing, and housewares. In addition, clients may go every Friday for fresh vegetables. Saturday, February 2, from 7 a.m. to noon, the HNFP will host a Rummage Sale at 8th and Harrison Church of Christ, located at 801 E. Harrison Avenue in Harlingen. They will be selling furniture, housewares,

clothing, and electronics and will also have a silent auction. If you have gently used items to donate, please call 956-428-3972. The HNFP is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). All proceeds from the HNFP Rummage Sale will allow them to purchase more food for residents of Harlingen who would otherwise go hungry. Thanks to the kindness of area residents, the food pantry has 100 volunteers. Mark your calendars and help the HNFP continue this important mission. •

STHS employees shared information on all of their services and facilities to those attending the WTE. “People get sick, and we want them to know who we are, where we are, and what we can do for them,” said Delia Gonzalez, marketing and outreach coordinator for STHS. “We have a facility that is accessible to every community. They don’t have to travel far to get the help they need.” Friends Julia Black and Diane Thunhorst, who live at Texan Mobile Park in McAllen, are longtime Winter Texans who enjoy coming to the Expo every year. After checking out a salsamaking demonstration, Black said she must try the recipe. This demonstration, live music, and getting to interact with local vendors, she said, is what keeps her coming back to the Expo. The fact that she’s not snowed in, as would likely be the case if she were at home in Minnesota, keeps her coming back to the Valley. To Black, every year, the Expo gets “a little more interesting.” Thunhorst said she appreciates that the event makes her stay in McAllen much simpler because it offers a “good variety of things” so she knows where to go to have her car serviced or to get a medical checkup. As far as automobiles go, many Winter Texans put their trust in Burns Motors. Business Center Developer Director Big Lew said it’s their honest pricing that makes them the go-to destination for the purchase of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. “We’re very honest on our website with the prices, and we’re competitive with every dealer,” he said. “We don’t play games. What you see is what you get.” Lew said he enjoys the Expo because it allows him the chance to visit with the Winter-Texan community. He knows many of them because of their visits to the Burns Motors Service Department. In another corner of the Exhibit Hall, H-E-B offered free glucose and bloodpressure screenings. The grocery chain increasingly tailors its product offerings to every community it serves, including Winter Texans. “We have a lot of things for Winter Texans who come and visit us,” said Norma Howard, advertising account manager for Hispanic marketing. “We’ve grown our relationship with the community the last several years, and we try to offer as much as possible so they go home happy.” The team at Welcome Home RGV has already started planning for the 27th Annual WTE in 2020. The 2020 Winter Texan Expo will be held January 1415, 2020 at the McAllen Convention Center. Mark your calendars now! Quilters at Green Gate Grove hosting 16th Annual Quilt Show February 5 Special to Welcome Home RGV

he quilters at Green Gate Grove will host their 16th Annual Quilt show Tuesday, February 5. Each year, one lucky person who attends the show wins the group’s Opportunity Quilt. This year’s Opportunity Quilt has been named Diamonds in the Sky (pattern by Judy and Judel Niemeyer). It is an awesome, king-sized quilt made by the Green Gate quilters. The proceeds from the event help the quilters purchase supplies they need to continue their community-service projects. They make and donate over 100 quilts each year for those in need. They also sponsor a quilt-athon, making quilts for veterans of the Rio Grande Valley. The Green Gate Grove Quilt Show

will have over 140 quilts on display, as well as wearable art, wall hangings, and other textile mediums. It is a wonderful show! There is no charge for admission. Lunch is available for purchase. ver 200 residents attended Pleasant Valley Resort’s 1st Responders fundraiser dinner/dance January 12. Again this year, it was a great success. Residents were very generous, and they all enjoyed a great dinner, danced to very good music, and won fabulous prizes.

Valley Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists offer speakers to local groups Special to Welcome Home RGV

aster Gardeners in Cameron and Hidalgo counties and two Valley Texas Master Naturalist chapters offer speakers and presentations, free, to local community organizations and local Winter Texan clubs and groups for non-political events and meetings. More than 160 topics of educational and informational value are offered through the four groups. Master Gardener topics are about many aspects of gardening, from garden-to-table vegetable and fruit gardening to exotic Brassavola orchids, including developing public community gardens, composting, butterfly and pollinator gardens, growing and caring for palms and citrus, medicinal plants, herb gardens, and native plants and trees. Master Naturalist topics are about the Rio Grande Valley’s unique habitat and ecosystem, from birds, butterflies, migration, and critters, to native plants and trees, adaptive landscape plants, Texas archaeology, shrimping the Gulf of Mexico, bats and beachcombing, and water features on a budget. Texas Master Naturalist and Master Gardener experts also are available for guided native plant walks in Harlingen’s Hugh Ramsey Nature

Park. Many presentations are 40 minutes and are designed to be electronically projected to large audiences or tailored to 20-minute, stand-up informational programs with questions and answers. Each organization can offer an overview of their organization. In addition, residents and Winter Texans are eligible to join any of the four organizations and sign up for their training classes. Two- and three-hour, fee-based workshops are available about aspects of gardening, including propagating plants, making decorative pots and designing a container garden,

PowerPoint design, presentation skills training, photography composition, and writing for newspapers. The Master Gardener and Master Naturalist organizations are educational volunteer programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas A&M University System. They offer speakers as part of their community education and outreach. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens and receive special training in horticulture. They demonstrate research-based recommendations

of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Master Naturalists are volunteers with diverse interests who are involved in myriad activities with local partners to learn about, work with, help sustain, and help educate others about the Valley’s special native habitat and the critters that depend on it. Many work as docents and nature guides at local, city, state, and federal wildlife preserves. he McAllen Holiday Parade continues to be recognized as “The Best Overall” in the state of Texas, walking away with 14 awards--seven of which were gold--as well as the coveted Best Overall award for the second year in a row. The awards were announced at the recent Texas Association of Fairs and Events annual conference held in Galveston. When speaking to the more than 700 attendees at the conference during the award presentation, Jerry Huffman, president of TAF&E and executive director of the George H. Henderson Jr. Exposition Center said, “I think it’s an awesome, awesome thing for McAllen to win this. What McAllen has done in just the last few years in creating this project [McAllen Holiday Parade] is absolutely incredible. This is how good McAllen is. You are better than anybody else in the state.” The McAllen Holiday Parade competed in the attendance category of 250,001-500,000 for the TAF&E Ray Cammack Shows Awards of Excellence for Marketing and Communications, competing against such events as the East Texas State Fair in Tyler and Grapefest in Grapevine. Other big winners included the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo, and the State Fair of Texas, as well as the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo, which won several awards and competed in the same category as the McAllen Holiday Parade. The McAllen Holiday Parade was awarded Best Overall in its category, which judges events based on their purpose and mission, the quality of marketing and communication elements, as well as activities included with the event, such as the volunteer program and merchandising. The McAllen Holiday Parade highlights the number of volunteers, the age of those volunteers, and the green

program, which provides recycling bags to parade attendees who sit along Bicentennials Boulevard. “About a year and a half ago, I

happened to catch most of an episode of a series on the National Geographic Channel, Year Million. I thought it was pretty interesting, but the content raised some difficult questions. I find both fascinating and disturbing the potential for nanobots to repair our broken bodies from the inside out, the pursuit of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality, designer children, and the notion of extending our life expectancy (quixotic as it may be) hundreds of years or more; however, I cannot see how humans will ever achieve a perfect--or even nearperfect--existence. What is most disturbing to me is the concept of one’s self (as opposed to the pronoun “oneself”) as a commodity rather than a unique entity. That particular episode I caught offered a hypothetical glimpse into the farflung future, where present-day manifestations of human imperfection will no longer exist or even be a threat. Cancer, addiction, Alzheimer’s--all physical evils will be eradicated, like smallpox. There was even talk of uploading one’s mind--memory, knowledge, skills--to something

“...how can a person’s mind, with or without consciousness, be transferred into some virtual realm minus the soul?” referred to as a “Matrioshka brain,” an AI repository for one’s consciousness. Theoretically (though light years away from realistically), a person (and I use the term loosely) could reside forever in a virtual-reality world. But what makes us who we are, sentient creations aware of our surroundings, singularly different than others with whom we share so many commonalities? Humans have a brain but also a mind. Each of us has a unique genetic signature, as well as a unique personality. Predilections, phobias, abilities, and faith vary greatly among our species. Who is to decide what, exactly, constitutes human perfection (or, to rephrase more secularly, the perfect human)? Each person on this Earth has a consciousness and, if you are willing to believe, a soul (that ineffable part of a human unlimited by the body). Tinkering with genes is one thing, but how can a person’s mind, with or without consciousness (if that’s even possible), be transferred into some virtual realm minus the soul? It

all sounds very sketchy to me, yet I must admit, again, that the content of that episode did pique my curiosity. (And what will happen to faith if the world actually believes that Man has succeeded in creating Heaven, even if only a SimCity version, rather than the other way around?) Have you heard of the “Bless U-2” robot? According to a June 1, 2017, article on the ChristianPost. com website, “German inventors have developed a ‘robot priest’ which dispenses ‘blessings’ in five different languages and beams light from its hands, a machine some say is intended to fuel debate about artificial intelligence and Christianity’s future… Fr. Bless U-2 recites passages from the Bible and says, ‘God bless and protect you.’… While robots that offer blessings may seem strange to many, conversation about the intersection of the Christian faith and artificial intelligence is indeed already happening as robotics and new-fangled technology continue to accelerate. And theological questions

And the way I see it, we can get rid of death or we can get rid of God, but we can’t get rid of both! •

ello, dear WHRGV readers. It has been awhile since I’ve shared some of my travels with you. If you missed my recommendations of things to do in Harlingen, you can find the information on our WHRGV website. This month, as the weather gets warmer, I’m sure you will want to venture out toward the Gulf (if you haven’t already!). Put on your walking shoes, grab a pair of sunglasses, and head out to Port Isabel for an enjoyable tour of history and culture. Be sure to keep up with our WHRGV blog for the latest from our Winter-Texan community and from my travels.

THINGS TO DO Port Isabel Museums Down by the Queen Isabella Causeway, you will find two intriguing history museums that tell of Port Isabel’s buried treasures. Start your visit in the Charles Champion building, home to the Port Isabel Historical Museum, where you will find an extensive mural painted by Juan Morales in 1906 featuring over 200 species from the Laguna Madre. Inside, be sure to read about the region’s role in the Mexican-American War and discover historical artifacts from the town’s past. Next door at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, step inside the Laguna Madre’s most famous shipwrecks that left only two survivors to tell the tale. Shop at the Antique and Flea Market On the first and third Sunday, during the winter months (otherwise only the first Sunday), at Beulah Lee Park, you can find dozens of the area’s best antique, food, and craft vendors. Join them on the lawn and admire local artists’ craftsmanship or search for curiosities. During the rest of the month, you can visit local artisans in the boutiques and art galleries that line the streets around the lighthouse.

Fish Did you know Port Isabel is home to the longest lighted fishing pier? I’m not much of a fisherwoman myself, but I hear the fish like to bite at night! It’s also fun to go out there and watch others do all of the gutsy work that fishing requires. The Laguna Madre, one of the most saline bodies of water in the U.S., is famous for its bountiful fishing. You can charter a bay fishing trip with a local guide or wade out in the water to catch your next meal.

PLACES TO SEE Port Isabel Lighthouse and Keeper’s Cottage Right along the water you will find Port Isabel’s most prominent and historic building, the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Built in 1853, the lighthouse has seen booming times along the South Texas coast, as well as two wars fought nearby. If you’re brave enough (or can climb 75 winding stairs), you will get some of the most beautiful views of the Laguna Madre and South Padre Island. On the lighthouse grounds, you will also find the Keeper’s Cottage, which now serves as a museum dedicated to lighthouse history. El Paseo de Santa Isabel’s Walk of Generals If you happen upon beautiful weather while you’re in Port Isabel, as you most often do, you can take your exploring outside to the Walk of Generals. From Manatou to Garcia Street, you will find 21 medallions lining the street that commemorate military leaders who played an important role in Port Isabel’s history. WHERE TO EAT Joe’s Oyster Bar One of my very favorite places to eat in Port Isabel is Joe’s Oyster Bar on Maxan Street. An off-the-beatenpath establishment, Joe’s doubles as a fresh-fish market. If you’re in the mood for a laid-back atmosphere and fried fare or fresh oysters, Joe’s is your place. Pirate’s Landing A fan favorite, Pirate’s Landing is a nautical-themed restaurant right on the bay overlooking the causeway. Their extensive menu includes seafood favorites, as well as land-locked classics. Visit Pirate’s Landing after a fishing trip on the bay, and they’ll cook your catch! •

arlingen Concert Association (HCA) is pleased and proud to present several outstanding live performances this season, featuring a mix of renowned artists and young performers on their way to prominence. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, 1204 Fair Park Boulevard. According to Bluegrass Today, The Malpass Brothers are “… the best traditional country music that can be seen today,” and some balcony seats still are available for their Harlingen show this Friday, January 25. These 20-somethings from Western North Carolina opened for music legend Merle Haggard on multiple tours and have appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to the Ryman Auditorium. Following their Grand Ole Opry debut December 21, they have been selling out concert halls all over the nation. If you like cornbread and hush puppies, you’ll love their smooth vocals, skillful musicianship, and offthe-cuff quips. Two weeks later, one of Canada’s top vocal groups, Cadence, takes the Harlingen stage. This a cappella ensemble has been wowing audiences across the continent and around the world since 1998, producing the powerful, rich sounds of a full band using only four voices and four microphones--no instruments! Their exciting February 9 show will feature a hypnotic blend of complex

harmonies, intricate arrangements, vocal dexterity, and just plain fun. Five Sax, a modern brass quintet featuring accomplished musicians from the U.S., Latin America, and Europe rolls into Harlingen Tuesday, February 19. The group’s creative approach has taken them from street theater in Vienna to some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. Their imaginative program mirrors the diversity of its members: rooted in classical music while venturing into American jazz, South American Latin styles, and European folk music. Saturday, March 9, accordion virtuoso Sergei Teleshev comes to Harlingen on his first American tour. Classically trained at the Academy of Music in Voronezh, R u s s i a , Teleshev and his dazzling fingers have won many regional and international competitions, with works by Bach, Piazzolla, Tchaikovsky, and more. This incredible musician composes and arranges and has performed with several world-renowned artists, ensembles, and orchestras. He will be accompanied by world-renowned violinist, singer, actress, and dancer Veronika Shabashova. Zesty Tavern Beef: Fast and easy Submitted by Sandy Olson

• 3½-4-pound boneless rump roast • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and halved lengthwise • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth, homemade or canned • 1 package dry ranch dressing mix (not the dip-style mix) Remove any visible exterior fat from the beef roast. Turn the pressure cooker to sauté mode and allow it to heat. When hot, add the oil to the pot. When the oil is hot, put the roast into the pot and brown it, uncovered, on all sides. Use the cancel button to turn the pot off. Remove the roast from the pot and carefully pour out any excess oil, but don’t scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Slice the onion as thinly as possible, placing it on its cut side so it’s stable for slicing. Heat the broth in the microwave on high for 3 minutes. Dissolve the ranch dressing mix in the broth, whisking it well. Put the roast back into the pot, top with the sliced onions, and pour the broth mixture over all. Put the lid on the pot, making sure the pressure valve is set to sealing. Cook on manual high pressure for 60 minutes. Allow a natural release for another 15 minutes; then release the remaining pressure carefully. Remove the lid and try to shred the beef with a fork. If it’s not cooked enough to shred (Texas beef can be tough!), replace the lid and cook on manual high for another 20 minutes. Do a quick release to test the beef again. Remove from the pot and shred with two forks. Serves 4 • ½ cup butter • 2 teaspoons dried parsley • 1 tablespoon black pepper • 2 pounds medium shrimp, uncooked, • 2 ounces Worcestershire sauce peeled, and deveined • ¼ teaspoon Tabasco sauce • 1 lemon, thinly sliced • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt butter in small saucepan; add black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, garlic powder, and dried parsley. Put shrimp into 13 x 9 baking pan. Pour butter mixture over shrimp; top with lemon slices. Split Pea Soup

I love the winter season because it is the official season of soup-making. This traditional split pea soup recipe gets a classic smoky flavor by adding yummy bacon. If you prefer to keep it vegetarian simply omit the bacon and add some paprika for the smoke. Half the split peas are added part way through cooking, which adds texture to each cozy, hearty spoonful. Bon Appétit! • Chef’s tip: Soup can be made 1 week in advance. Add stock when reheating if needed. • 6 slices bacon • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more as needed • 1 medium onion, diced (about 1 1/2 cups) • 2 medium leeks, white and pale green parts rinsed and thinly sliced (about 1 3/4 cups) • 4 garlic cloves, minced • Kosher salt and black pepper • 2 medium carrots, scrubbed and diced (about 1 1/2 cups) • 1 pound dried split green peas • 2 fresh thyme sprigs • 8 to 12 cups chicken stock or water • Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)

In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp, 12 to 13 minutes. Transfer the bacon to a plate lined with a paper towel. Once cool, crumble and set aside for garnish. In the same pot, add the onion, leeks and garlic and season generously with salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. (If the vegetables seem dry, add a little olive oil.) Stir in the carrots, half the split peas, thyme and 8 cups stock or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, partly covered, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes until peas are tender. Remove the two thyme springs. Mash the soup coarsely with a potato masher or give it a few quick blitzes with an immersion blender. If you’d prefer a smoother soup, blitz until nearly smooth. Add the remaining 1/2 pound split peas and simmer about 1 hour, or until the peas are soft. If at any point the soup looks too thick, add more stock or water; if it looks too thin, remove the lid during the second simmer until it thickens. Season soup to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with crumbled bacon, and lemon wedges. •
