South Texas Health System Seminar on Trauma and Injury Prevention Special to Welcome Home RGV

South Texas Health System held a

Trauma and Injury Prevention Expo September 30. Those in attendance heard from physicians, clinicians, first responders, and other partner agencies about how to prevent injuries and how the public can best respond to potential dangers lurking in our homes, backyards, and communities. This free preparedness expo featured interactive exhibits, such as CPR demonstrations, Jaws-ofLife extractions and grease-fire presentations. Attendees took tours of air and ground ambulances, got a checkup for their favorite stuffed animal at the Teddy Bear Clinic, enjoyed a bicycle rodeo, cleaned out their cabinets at the “drug take-back” booth, and did much, much more! New features this year included various food trucks offering refreshments for sale and a Kid Zone! Fighting for the Health, Education, Financial Stability and Safety of those in Need

September, United Way of South Texas welcomed over 175 volunteers and supporters to its 2017 Campaign Kick-off event. Board members recognized Pacesetter companies, Loaned Executives, and agencies that delivered programs and services supported by United Way. The event also featured Juanita Borrego, parent and migrant director at Edcouch-Elsa I.S.D, who spoke about the impact of United Way programs for students, primarily on how United Way’s Education Council Grants, administered in eight school districts, help meet students’ basic and emergency needs so they can graduate. Through Borrego’s stories and through client testimonials, all those in attendance were reminded of the WHY behind United Way’s annual campaign—to support programs that benefit the health, education, financial stability, and safety net of more than 265,000 residents in Hidalgo and Starr counties. (The table

highlights many of these programs.) Contributions from United Way supporters and volunteers make it possible for United Way to fund these programs. Pacesetter companies have already helped United Way reach almost 45 percent of its 2017 campaign goal of $2,500,000. These companies represent corporations, municipalities, school districts, and individuals who run their employee campaigns or make their corporate pledge during the first month of the campaign. Their CEOs and campaign coordinators lead the effort at their workplaces. Halloween on Jackson Street Ghoulish Fun for the Entire Family! Special to Welcome Home RGV

The City of Harlingen and the Harlingen Parks and Recreation Department welcome everyone to attend Halloween on Jackson Street Tuesday, October 31, from 6 - 9 p.m. in historic Downtown Harlingen. Five blocks of Jackson Street will be closed, with over 50 candy stations, rides for the kids, a haunted house, a craft area, a parade of costumes, music, food vendors, and more. Downtown businesses elaborately decorate their display windows for the season. This is a safe and familyfriendly alternative to your usual Halloween custom of walking house to house in neighborhoods with traffic. Last year’s event attracted more than 5,000 people.

Gardens Golf Course is a private, nine-hole par 3 course located between Winter Ranch RV Resort and Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo. Both properties are owned and operated by the Wilder Corporation. They both have mobile home and park model sites, as well as travel trailer, fifth wheel, and motor home sites. They allow both seasonal and full-time residency.

Both resorts have recreation halls, pickle ball courts, shuffleboard courts, swimming pools, and hot tubs for the residents’ enjoyment. The two parks share the golf course and also the horseshoe pits. All the amenities are for the sole use of the residents. As you know from living so close to the border of Mexico, many children go without proper food, shelter, and essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors. This need is magnified when so many children are denied even the blessings of the Christmas season. Amigos de Los Niños de Mexico (Friends of the Children of Mexico) was organized in 1990 to address this need through gifts of friendship, love, food, and presents for children in Progreso, Mexico. MAKE-A-WISH® Child Gives Backs to Others Special to Welcome Home RGV

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Rio Grande Valley grants wishes to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 with life-threatening medical conditions. Wish kids are not the only ones who benefit from the wish. Families are strengthened by the experience, communities find joy in participation, and everyone involved has a greater hope for the future. When 11-year-old wish child Edgar, from Santa Rosa, was asked, “If you could have one wish ....what would you want more than anything?” he could have chosen a trip to Disney or some other exciting place, met a celebrity, had a room makeover, or dozens of other ideas, but he chose a shopping spree.

Make-A-Wish has many shopping sprees, but they had never had one like Edgar’s! He wanted to go shopping at Best Buy for electronics, pick up a few things at Target, and buy toys for the children in the hospital. This selfless child wanted to give back to other children, who are spending time in the very place where he is far too familiar. He loves golf and actually wanted a set of golf clubs, but he either had enough money for golf clubs or the toys, so he chose toys for others. October 19, you are invited to join a growing community interested in preserving the Valley’s natural heritage. As part of a statewide effort to raise awareness of the importance of native plants during Texas Native Plant Week, Quinta Mazatlán and partners are hosting a fun evening called Planta Nativa. The nationally renowned advocate for native plants, Dr. Douglas Tallamy of the University of Delaware, author of Bringing Nature Home, will be the keynote speaker on the large outdoor LED screen. This Thursday evening in the park will feature an Art Walk featuring over ten artists, a native plant sale, tapas, spirits, and music! Our local brewers, including Big River Brewery in Pharr, Rabble-Rouser Brewing Company in McAllen, and Border Brewers are coming together to feature their best. Also enjoy the music of The Parula Winds-Woodwind Quintet and Marcel Adjibi & Group-Native Drum Ensemble. Dr. Tallamy will present “Creating Living Landscapes,” raising awareness of the importance of native plants in urban settings and how they contribute to the ecosystem.

respect my elders, but now it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one. Have you noticed that nostalgia isn’t what it used to be? I remember back as a kid being amazed at the life my own grandparents and earlier ancestors lived. I have a photo of my grandpa plowing behind a team of horses. He managed to farm--at least in his earlier years--without benefit of electricity. When my grandparents finally got a phone, it was shared with several neighbors. I still recall the number we had to give to the operator in order to call grandma--32F014 please. Those older folks had a mystique about them. They were pioneers, hardy people who knew how to work, who had survived hardship and toil and to whom we kids looked up as respected elders. There aren’t a lot of those pioneerera people left among us, and those who are seem to be dwindling in numbers. That leaves the next generations to fill the role of revered elders. However, in that role, I feel a little inadequate. I have looked at my earlier life for things that would make good “tales of yesteryear” lore, the stuff that will make the younger generations go, “Wow, Grandpa!” Unfortunately, I got nothin’.

Well, maybe I did have to write all my college papers on a manual typewriter. My parent’s cars didn’t have air conditioning, and we actually had to drive around with our windows open in the summer. Our refrigerator had to be defrosted every few months…by hand. Oh, when I was very young, our first television only got one channel. Maybe that counts for something. As much as I would like to impress youngsters on my tough life, my ability to thrive in adversity, or my self-reliance and survival skills, my world was pretty cushy in comparison. Most of our older readers likely had a similar experience to mine. So on what grounds do we make a claim for the respect of the kids? Perhaps it is that in having a life filled with comforts, we stayed true to the spirit of our ancestors. Most of us lived our lives in honesty, worked hard and showed good character, cared for others, and were mostly thrifty in our ways. We didn’t take those comforts for granted. Instead, we built a great nation and a thriving economy on the foundation already laid down for us. I am anxious to see where the next generations will take us with what we leave them. I’m just sayin’. •

1989, people have come from near and far on the first Saturday in November to celebrate the art and tradition of storytelling around the Live Oak County Courthouse square in downtown George West, the Storytelling Capital of Texas. Saturday, November 4, George West Storyfest will celebrate 29 consecutive years of presenting professional and local storytellers to audiences appreciative of listening to good stories. People who attend Storyfest not only enjoy the stories told by the traditional storytellers but also the stories told through music, history, and dance. The Storyfest stage hosts live music from a variety of genres—country, gospel, bluegrass, and Tejano, to name a few, as well as cloggers and other dance groups

present location of Weslaco was originally part of the Llano Grande land grant to Juan José Ynojosa de Ballí in 1790. The American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company purchased a major portion of the Llano Grande grant in 1913. December 14, 1917, the irrigation company sold 30,000 acres to the W. E. Stewart Land Company. The town name Weslaco was derived from this company’s name. The Stewart Company later sold the town site to Ed C. Couch and others. The site was surveyed and platted September 18, 1919. The sale of lots was held December 8–10, 1919. To make a claim, individuals had to choose a lot and camp on it until the day of the sale. Lots were given away free to church groups. Since that time, Weslaco has experienced steady growth. Key industries have been agriculture and international trade. Today, that includes healthcare, retail, and tourism. A significant number of Winter Texans make Weslaco home during the winter months. At the center of the World Birding Center, Weslaco welcomes bird enthusiasts from throughout the world at three nature tourism sites. Reflecting upon Weslaco’s significance as a birding location, the city’s official bird is the Altamira oriole. In addition to its beauty, Altamira orioles are native to the tropics of Deep South Texas and Northeastern Mexico. Weslaco’s Visitor Center, centrally located at 275 Kansas Avenue, is a haven for Winter Texans. Always greeted by smiling and pleasant staff or volunteers, Winter Texans enjoy a free daily coffee bar and weekly raffle for local products and coupons. The coffee bar becomes a hub of social activity where friendships are fostered. Winter Texans receive referrals for restaurants, boutiques, western wear, and other local businesses, along with recommended itineraries for local and regional day events. Blueberry Coffee Cake

It’s

definitely time to begin our seasonal baking and fortunately, the fresh blueberries are still available at the grocery store. This yummy, cheerful blueberry coffee cake is one of my alltime favorites and I know you will love it too! It is easy to prepare and perfectly delicious as well. It’s ideal with afternoon tea or morning coffee or really any time of day! • For the cake:

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature (3/4 stick) 3/4 cup granulated sugar 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest 2/3 cup sour cream 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

For the streusel:

1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated is best if you have it) 1/4 pound (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9-inch round baking pan. To make the streusel: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir in the melted butter and then flour; mix well and set aside. To make the coffee cake: Cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on high speed for 4 to 5 minutes, until light. Reduce the speed to low and add the eggs 1 at a time, add the vanilla, lemon zest, and sour cream. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. On low speed, slowly add the flour mixture to the batter until just combined but do not over mix. Gently fold in the blueberries until the batter is completely incorporated. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the batter (using your hands works best). Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely and serve sprinkled with sifted confectioners’ sugar. •

Tasty and Easy Chipotle Chili con Carnecon Carne

This is a satisfying chili made with readily available ingredients. Chipotle

chilis are red, ripe jalapeño chilis roasted over a wood fire. Buy them canned and packed in adobo sauce, which is a sweet and tangy puree of tomato, vinegar, garlic, and spices. The “con Carne” label means “with meat”--in this case, beef stew meat. Preparation summary: This recipe is very easy to prepare. You will season and brown the meat, simmer the meat in a stock until tender, shred the meat, add beans and a few other ingredients to the meat, simmer, and serve.

Tasty and Easy Chipotle Chili con Carne Preparation time 15 minutes. Cooking time about 2 hours. Serves 4 friends a single decent-sized bowl. • 1 Tbsp. chili powder • 1 Tbsp. ground cumin • 12 to 16 ounces beef stew meat, trimmed and cut into 1-inch squares • About 2 Tbsp. cooking oil (canola or similar) for browning the meat • 1 chipotle chili in adobo sauce. Mince one chili and add sauce to equal about 2 Tbsp. sauce and chili • 1 can (14 ounces) beef broth • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced fire roasted tomatoes--undrained • 1 large green (bell) pepper--washed, with seeds, stem, and webbing r emoved and cut into ½-inch squares • 2 cans pinto or red beans--drained and rinsed. I used one can pinto beans and one can black beans • 1 tsp. kosher salt (or to taste)

Measure and combine the chili powder and cumin in a bowl. Add the trimmed and cubed meat and stir until the spices coat the meat. Heat the oil to medium heat in a large sauce pan or Dutch oven. Add the seasoned beef and stir for about 5 minutes until nicely browned. Add the beef broth and the chipotle and adobo sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the meat is tender, about an hour and 15 minutes. When tender, use a slotted spoon to remove the meat from the broth. Reserve the broth. Use two forks to shred the meat into smaller bites. Return the meat to the broth. Add the tomatoes (with juice) and the bell pepper. Bring to a boil and stir in the drained and rinsed beans. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until the bell pepper is tender. Serve while hot. Now make it your own! Here are some suggested garnishes: Sprinkle your chili with fresh, chopped cilantro (highly recommended), add a few slices of avocado, add a few tortilla chips, add a spoonful of sour cream or Mexican crema, add a few drops of Cholula sauce, sprinkle with shredded cheese of your choice, add chopped onions. The survey used cost criteria for groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare to rank America’s 150 biggest cities according to affordability. It was conducted by GOBankingRates, a personal finance website. Here are the poll’s top 10 least expensive cities, with annual individual costs across the five categories. 1. Floresta RV Park and Golf Course, providing Winter Texans with a variety of competitions and tournaments. At the end of last season, they held a Handicap Tournament and a Championship Tournament. The 26th Annual La Floresta Championship Golf Tournament was held March 6-8 with 55 golfers participating in the tournament. This year’s winners were Marilyn Walters and Bob Fuller. The Handicap Tournament was held March 20-24 with 64 golfers. Winners of the Women’s Division were Lorraine Trudeau, Karleen Weiland, and Kim Humniski. In the Men’s Division, the winners were Don Young, Roger Else, Bob Fuller, Bob Kinash, and Pat Bump.

An awards dinner was held to recognize the golfers who participated in these tournaments. In addition to the trophies and prizes awarded, residents enjoyed pizza from Formacio Pizzeria in Mercedes. •

Cinderella Pet Rescue in Mission Needs Volunteers Special to Welcome Home RGV

Cinderella Pet Rescue was founded in 2008 by a small group of concerned citizens who recognized the critical need for a no-kill shelter to save some of the many animals abandoned in South Texas. As a 501(c)(3) organization, CPR has grown over the years and yet is still run by volunteers who are dedicated to helping the animals. Each member of the team brings something special to the shelter, insuring that the pets get the love, exercise, and

medical attention they require. With all of the dogs, cats, horses and donkeys present at the shelter, there is always a lot to do. From construction to petting, volunteers keep their doors open. South Texas College Theatre returns for its eighth year with a full lineup of productions filled with suspense and mystery for the 2017-18 season, STC Theatre invites the community to become a Season Pass subscriber for another year of fun and quality entertainment. Fish Mural Undergoing Restoration Special to Welcome Home RGV

In 1906, just seven years after the

1899 construction of the Champion building in Port Isabel, local fisherman and artist Jose Morales was commissioned to paint a fish mural on the front of the two-story structure. It was meant to promote sport fishing in the area. Over 200 images represent the species that can be found in the Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico off the beaches of South Padre Island. Over the decades, the mural has been restored several times. Weather and other factors create conditions that require periodic restoration, so it was early in the spring of 2017 that plans were made for it to undergo its latest restoration. The Museums of Port Isabel has commissioned local artist Angel Hernandez to restore the 212 images that grace the building. Pictured is a sampling of part of the mural that has already been completed. Other improvements being made on the grounds of the Champion building include the reconstruction of the walkway that leads to the Port Isabel Historical Museum entrance. Designed using the architectural details on the front of the Champion building, the walkway will feature the same millwork, proportions, and colors that make up the gallery on the south side of the structure.

The Museums of Port Isabel will be fundraising for the historical fish mural. Those interested in participating can select the fish they would like to sponsor and contact museum staff for payment processing. Selections are first-come, first-served. The Fish Mural will be celebrated October 28 at 4 p.m. Festivities will include recognition of the donors and a presentation of the history of the fish mural. Vandygriff will be among those taking part in the Johnny Campbell Cowboy Gathering. On the courthouse lawn at this year’s Living History, Jason Lee will exhibit his collection of World War II uniforms, weapons, and memorabilia and Lee Haile will demonstrate his impressive collection of folk toys. Stories can be heard—and created— at the Motorcycle Show, in the Children’s Area and around the food and arts & crafts booths. Children of all ages will enjoy a ride on the All Aboard Texas Train. Of course, the tales spun during the Texas State Liars’ Contest© generate uproarious laughter from the audience. This year, visitors can even get their eyes examined for free in the Lions Club Mobile Eye Exam Bus.

And all of the entertainment during the day on Saturday is FREE! Storyfest is a non-gated event, ensuring everyone the opportunity to experience performing arts and learn about history. Local and area nonprofit groups provide food booths and children’s games as a means of fundraising for their particular groups. Quality arts & crafts vendors rent space to sell their wares, just in time for some early Christmas shopping. Dobie loved--especially with his Texas Folklore Society friends. With the campfire, the stories told around the fire, and a good bowl of chili, Dobie’s spirit is all around the Dobie Dichos gathering.” Tickets for the meal and program are $15 for adults and $7 for children under the age of 12, by pre-sale only.
