H

appy holidays from all of us at Welcome Home RGV! It’s our favorite time of the year, and we know you will understand that this issue is the last of 2017. We’ll skip the week between Christmas and New Year’s so we can have a little bit of rest and relaxation with the friends and family that we love.

Each year I host Christmas Eve at our house, a tradition that was passed on to me by my grandmother. I love being surrounded by my family, and look forward to hosting all year long. My daughter, who is a sophomore in college at the University of Texas at Austin comes home this week. She’s my not-so-little elf and having her home for the holidays is the best gift I could ask for Best wishes to all of you for a wonderful holiday and a safe and happy New Year! Whether you’re heading home or staying put please be careful and we’ll be seeing you in 2018! • We’re just connecting the dots,

Kristi

Help the RGV Wing Museum: A Plea for Help Special to Welcome Home RGV

Dear Friends and Supporters of the

Rio Grande Valley Wing Museum and AIR FIESTA, As I’m sure most of you know, in September the Wing received notice that the City, in general, and the Airport, in particular, are no longer willing to support our museum or the airshow. In fact, we have been instructed to vacate the premises no later than January 30, 2018. Since we don’t want to be where we’re not wanted, we have chosen to take the high road and go quietly. So, for the past 2½ months, we have been cleaning up, boxing up, and arranging for a new home. It looks as if we will meet the deadline and move our airplanes, artifacts, rolling stock, shop equipment, and other items to the Cameron County Airport next door to the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge west of Laguna Vista. Here is the problem: With the museum closing just as Winter-Texan season arrives and the cancellation of AIR FIESTA (our primary revenue source), we have no incoming cash flow at all. We have big plans for developing a wonderful facility, and we hope to secure grant money to

fund the construction of it. But in the meantime, we still have bills to pay – insurance and maintenance on the airplanes, moving expenses, modifications at our new home, and many other things. If you can help us financially to get “over the hump” until we can get established and start generating revenue again, we would really appreciate it. Anything large or small is greatly appreciated. (Donations are tax deductible.) Checks can be made to RGV Wing-CAF and mailed to P. O. Box 8190, Brownsville, Texas 78526. We have great and exciting plans for our new home. We will do our best to keep you posted on our progress. Thanks in advance for your support and have a great Christmas! David Hughston, Finance Officer RGV Wing •

Editor’s Note: Welcome Home RGV took activity and tour directors to the RGV Wing of the CAF back in November of 2014. Please help us keep this museum a part of the Rio Grande Valley.

Senior Suppers Series at South Texas Health System Special to Welcome Home RGV

The

first of several events in the South Texas Health System’s Senior Suppers Series was held Tuesday, December 12, at Edinburg Regional Medical Center. Several winter visitors interested in learning more about staying healthy attended the supper, held inside the ERMC cafeteria. Dr. Ruben Pinero, MD, a psychiatrist at South Texas Behavioral Center, served as guest speaker and educated the group on neurocognitive disorders. The purpose of the Senior Supper Series is to keep our aging population interested in their health and to inform them of ways to prevent recurring hospital visits. The series is open to all residents 55 years and older and only costs five dollars to attend. SENIOR SUPPERS SERIES CONTINUED ON PAGE 15 >>
