been unusually quiet around our office. We call it the calm before the storm. That typically means that RV parks are busy checking people in for the season, and that sounds about right because we’ve had so many of our park contacts reporting earlier arrivals. We hope some of you will bring a touch of cooler weather with you. (Now don’t worry; we’re only asking for some 70s!)

The month of October is always busy as we get ready for the entire season. November finds us entertaining activity and tour directors. We feel it is so important to educate them on all there is to do across the Rio Grande Valley so they can share all they’ve learned with YOU! With that being said, if you have questions on where to go or what to do, we feel certain you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for (and plenty of things you didn’t even know about) in the pages that follow! •

arine Military Academy will host its Veterans Day Parade Friday, November 11, at 4 p.m. on the MMA Parade Ground. Veterans from all military branches are encouraged to attend, as they will be honored at this occasion and asked to join the MMA superintendent for the pass in review. Nearly 100 veterans were honored at last year’s parade. The public is not only welcome, but encouraged, to attend this event and pay respect to their nation’s local heroes. All parade goers are encouraged to participate in the flag retirement ceremony following the parade. MMA’s battalion-size parades are always held in front of the historic Iwo Jima Monument, a symbol of American pride for veterans and civilians alike. Although bleacher seating is available, parade goers may bring lawn chairs. MMA is located at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., off Loop 499 and next to Valley International Airport, in Harlingen. Walkers Take to the Streets to Fight Suicide

Edinburg Walk Being Held November 12 Special to Welcome Home RGV

Suicide is the tenth leading cause

of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. More than 1000 people from throughout the RGV are expected to participate in the annual RGV Out of the Darkness Community Walk hosted by the South Texas Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at 8:00 a.m., November 12, at Edinburg Municipal Park. This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025. “We walk to raise awareness about this important health issue,” said Melissa HinojosaZamora, South Texas Chapter board member. “Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that, by walking, we save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.” The RGV Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 375 Out of the Darkness C o m m u n i t y Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 250,000 walkers and raise

millions for suicide prevention efforts. With this walk last year, AFSP South Texas Chapter raised over $24,000 and had 1068 participants. Among the speakers at the RGV Out of the Darkness Walk will be Joe Rodriguez, CEO, South Texas Behavioral Health Center. “These walks are about turning hope into action,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “Suicide is a serious problem, but it’s a problem we can solve. The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight the science is only going to get better, our culture will get smarter about mental health, and we’ll be able to save more people from dying from depression and other mental health conditions.” •

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health through education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide. Led by CEO Robert Gebbia, headquartered in New York, and with a public policy office in Washington, D.C., AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide. Event Title: International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day Date: November 19, 2016 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Place: McAllen Public Library, 4001 N. 23rd Street, McAllen International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope. This will be the very first year the event will be held in the Rio Grande Valley. Survivor Day was created by an act of Congress in 1999 and since then has been sponsored and supported by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). In 2015, there were 330 locally organized events held throughout the U.S. and Canada and around the world. This year’s gatherings will include a screening of AFSP’s compelling new documentary, Life Journeys: Reclaiming Life after Loss. For many loss survivors, attending a Survivor Day event is an opportunity

to discover that they are not alone in their experience of losing someone they know and love to suicide. Three RGV Cities Receive Recognition for Smoke-Free Ordinances at Texas Municipal League’s Annual Conference Special to Welcome Home RGV

The

cities of Edinburg, Mission, and Pharr were among 12 cities that received recognition for recently passing comprehensive smoke-free ordinances. Smoke-Free Texas, a statewide coalition made up of a broad group of organizations and individuals advocating for smokefree indoor public places, handed out Smoke-Free City awards to those cities that have passed ordinances since the last Texas Municipal League conference. Secondhand smoke exposure causes more than 41,000 deaths per year in the United States. Many of these deaths are preventable with ordinances that prohibit smoking indoors, reducing employee and non-smoker exposure to secondhand smoke. As a part of Smoke-Free Texas, the Hidalgo County Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition seeks to mobilize members of the community to raise awareness and educate the public on the damaging effects of tobacco. The Hidalgo County TPCC is a coalition effort of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, located in Pharr. The Coalition was established

to empower Hidalgo County to affect individual and social change through cooperation, sharing, and coordination of resources focused on preventing and reducing the illegal and harmful use of tobacco products. The TPCC’s goals are to prevent tobacco use among young people, promote compliance and support adequate enforcement of federal, state, and local tobacco laws, increase cessation among young people and adults, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, reduce tobacco use among populations with the highest burden of tobacco-related health disparities, and develop and maintain statewide capacity for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control. Place Golf Course in Harlingen is a nine-hole, public course located inside on a 55+ community. The course was originally built as a Par 3. Then, in the 90’s, with change in ownership, it was rebuilt and is now a nine-hole, Par 36. Half of the course is played among the homes, with narrow fairways and a number of water hazards. The other half is in the open, with generous fairways (although there are trees and doglegs to keep you on your toes). There are no sand traps. The fairways are common Bermuda grass, and the greens are a mix of Bermuda and Tif. The course has four sets of tees with three rated for men and one for women. For men, the blue tees at 2742 yards are rated 66.2/106, the white tees at 2523 yards are rated 63.6/101, and the yellow tees at 2101 yards are rated 61.8/99. The red tees are 1971 yards and rated for women at 64.7/93. Cart rental is available, or you may bring your own and pay a trail fee. After your golf game, stay and enjoy hot dogs and other great eats at the clubhouse and then go for a swim in their pool, which is also open to the public. Annual Port Isabel Shrimp Cook-Off Set for November 6 Special to Welcome Home RGV

The

2015 professional and amateur chefs will be returning to defend their titles at the 23rd Annual World’s Championship Shrimp Cookoff in Port Isabel. Dozens of other pro and amateur chefs will try to unseat them with special shrimp recipes of their own. The event, scheduled for Sunday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., will be held at the intersection of Highways 100 and 48 in the parking lot in front of Sutherlands. The day-long festival will feature live entertainment by the ever-popular group The Agency, activities and rides for children, merchandise, food vendors, and more. Admission fee is $5 for adults and $2 for children 10 and under. Competitors will each be featuring one of their favorite shrimp recipes, and samples are offered to the crowd for fees ranging from $2 $5. All contestants must use only wild-caught, Gulf shrimp in their recipes. Two panels of judges will blind-judge the event, with winners in both divisions to be announced at 4:30 p.m. on site. Other food vendors will offer treats that include funnel cakes, cheesecake, BBQ, and more. Merchandise vendors will display a variety of items, and local community groups will spread the word about the Laguna Madre area. “The Shrimp Cook-off brings locals, visitors, and Winter Texans together for a fun-filled day in Port Isabel,” said Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce President Betty Wells. “It’s also an opportunity for us to celebrate the history of the shrimping industry and the important role it has played in our community development.”

Wells also noted that the chamber has partnered with Island Metro this year to encourage attendees to ride the Metro to and from the event. “Parking is always a problem for an event this size,” says Wells. “Those attending the cook-off can catch a ride on Island Metro and avoid that issue. They will also be rewarded with a discount on the admission fee.” Discount tickets offering $1 off admission fees will be available on the buses throughout the week before the cook-off, as well as the day of the event. Join McAllen Public Library Saturday, November 12, for the Third Annual McAllen Book Festival. Recipes for All Outdoor Chefs

teak! One of the best things eaten “hot off the grill!” This recipe uses Kansas City strips, but feel free to substitute your own favorite tender cut. You might have to adjust cooking time to account for thickness of the meat and your own preferred doneness. •

Kansas City Strip Steaks

with Parmesan-Grilled Vegetables •4 Kansas City strip steaks, 1-inch thick • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper • 4 teaspoons dried basil • ¼ cup red wine vinegar • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

• 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 cup olive oil • 2 large red onions • 2 red or yellow bell peppers

Combine garlic, basil, and black pepper and rub each steak with 2 teaspoons of this mixture. Combine the rest of the spice mixture in a small bowl with the Parmesan, oil, and vinegar. Set aside. Quarter and seed the bell peppers. Peel and cut the onion into ½-inch slices. Pre-cook the onion slices in the microwave for 2 minutes. Place the vegetables in a greased grill basket over a hot fire. Grill for about 15 minutes, tossing and brushing with the cheese mixture the last 10 minutes of cooking. At the same time, place the steaks directly on the grill and cook for 7 minutes on each side for medium. (Adjust time up or down according to your preference.)

Mimosa Punch

Serves 4 • 5 large oranges • ¼ cup orange-flavored liqueur • 15 maraschino cherries • ¼ cup brandy • Lemon leaves • 1 (1 liter) bottle club soda, chilled • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 (750 ml.) bottle champagne or • 3 (2 ½ inch) cinnamon sticks sparkling white wine, chilled • 3 cups orange juice • 6-quart punch bowl • 6-cup ring mold One day in advance, prepare ice ring. With small knife, cut continuous 1-inch side strip of peel from each orange; reserve peels. Squeeze juice from oranges; add water to orange juice to measure 5 cups liquid. Pour 3 ½ cups orange juice mixture into 6-cup ring mold; freeze about 3 hours. Refrigerate remaining juice mixture. Meanwhile, carefully trim white membrane from orange-peel strips. Form each orange-peel strip into a rose by rolling it tightly, skin-side out; cover and refrigerate. When juice ring is frozen, arrange orange-peel roses, maraschino cherries, and lemon leaves on frozen mixture for garnish; pour in half of remaining mixture. Freeze until firm to set garnishes in place, about 1 hour. Add remaining juice mixture. (Make sure orange-peel roses, cherries, and lemon leaves extend above juice.) Freeze. In 1-quart saucepan over high heat, heat sugar, cinnamon, and ½ cup water to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Refrigerate until ready to complete punch. Just before serving, in a punch bowl large enough to hold ice ring, mix orange juice, liqueur, brandy, and cinnamon mixture. Stir in soda and champagne. To serve, place punch bowl on tray. Unmold ice ring; add to punch. Decorate tray with leaves and ribbon, depending on occasion. Doubles easily. A delicately spiced champagne. Spectacular. Perfect for a holiday toast or bridal party.

Parade Route, Ticket Sale Information, and Call for Volunteers Special to Welcome Home RGV

The 2016 McAllen Holiday Parade,

presented by La Plaza Mall, is looking for the young, and young at heart, to be a part of the tradition of making dreams come true for everyone at this year’s magical celebration. The parade, to be held Saturday, December 3, is the largest illuminated holiday and helium-balloon parade in Texas. The parade features more than 50 vibrant lighted floats, 36 larger-than-life inflatable character balloons, 13 bands, and a celebrityfilled line-up and this year features the musical theme Entertainment on Parade. “La Plaza Mall is thrilled to be aligned with the McAllen Holiday Parade for the third year in a row,” said Roberto Luciano, La Plaza Mall general manager. “Community is a cornerstone at La Plaza Mall, and we are so proud to be a part of such a wonderful tradition and look forward to sharing the holiday season with the McAllen community.” The one-and-a-half mile-long parade route begins at 6:00 p.m., starting from McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2001 North Bicentennial Boulevard, where reserved seating is available. The parade then heads south on Bicentennial Boulevard to Business 83, where free seating is available along the route on a firstcome, first-served basis. The Texas A&M Fighting Aggie Band will kick off the parade entertainment with an on-field performance before the start of the parade. Joining the band will be local children’s dance and choir groups and the culturally popular Hispanic holiday tradition of La Posada, which reenacts Joseph and Mary’s search for lodging. “The McAllen Holiday Parade has quickly become a part of the holiday tradition for so many families celebrating the most joyous of seasons,” said City of McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “As each new element is unveiled, all with the intent of delighting and thrilling our community, I hope that everyone makes plans to be a part of such a special event for us all.” Tickets to view the parade from Veterans Memorial Stadium went on sale Friday, October 21, at the McAllen Convention Center Box Office, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. The stadium seats 13,000, so join neighbors, friends, and visitors in McAllen for one of the best seats in the house for the parade. Ticket prices are $10, $20, and $30, plus fees. Getting the family to the parade will not be difficult, as the City of McAllen, in partnership with South Texas College, will offer a free Polar Express Park & Ride from the Pecan Boulevard campus parking lot to the parade drop-off location. Additionally, with almost 15 designated parking lots scattered from Nolana Avenue south to Pecan Boulevard, attendees are encouraged to park and get in place early to avoid road closures, which will begin at 11:00 a.m., and the heavy event

traffic, as approximately 220,000 spectators will line the streets of McAllen to view the McAllen Holiday Parade. Public restroom facilities will be located throughout the parade route. D From the Inside, Out D Hummingbirds are a Joy to Behold

ummingbirds are visible all summer from my favorite sitting place by the bay window in my kitchen. They eat from a feeder filled with a nutritious mixture I provide for them. The feeder is flanked by a showy blue glass birdbath that is rejected by all the birds in my back yard. There is also an attractive blue glass cutsey-pie butterfly feeder that has been less than successful at attracting butterflies of any kind. To complete this arrangement of outdoor décor, there is the wooden bird feeder hanging from a shepherd’s crook that unfortunately became a money pit. I filled it with seeds of varieties that attract hungry birds, and the sparrows came from as far away as Edinburg (I am convinced) to eat my offering of sustenance. What’s worse, they kept the exotics away in their eagerness to gobble up my grain supply. So I have stopped filling the feeder, and it hangs empty, merely an item to complete my outdoor garden arrangement. However, the local chameleons find it a most appropriate place to roost as they show off and attract their lady loves by blowing up various parts of their body in glowing technicolor. Hummingbirds seem so sweet and vulnerable, but they are actually mean and territorial. One visitor chose to sit on a broad leaf of my Bird of Paradise bush and keep all the other hummers away from the feeder. He was so busy fighting off his hungry neighbors I was surprised he didn’t die of starvation. I grew to dislike him and considered finding a way to eradicate the little bugger, but he was too fast to swat. Then there was the woodpecker problem. I considered woodpeckers really bird-brained because they would peck on my metal downspouts early in the morning, as if there could be a worm or insect therein! Worst of all, at seven in the morning, it sounds like a machine gun outside

my window. I was wrong about the bird-brain assumption, though. The woodpeckers in my yard discovered if they hung upside down from my hummingbird feeder, they could crank their neck up and around and drink from the feeder like thirsty horses. They could empty a bottle of hummingbird food in an afternoon. I began a campaign of fright therapy. Each time a woodpecker approached my window, I kept an unfolded newspaper nearby and slapped at the window. After weeks of enduring those frightening disturbances to their mealtime from an upside-down position, they decided it wasn’t worth the wear and tear on their nervous system and actually stopped stealing from my feeder. However, the whole lot of them is still hoping to find a worm in my aluminum downspouts. Next week, I am going to elaborate on the amazing habits of the little hummingbirds that populate and fascinate vast areas of the Western Hemisphere. • M. Alamo Palms Adds Radio-Controlled Racing Track and More Special to Welcome Home RGV

The Alamo Palms Recreation Club

wanted some new activities in the park, so after some discussion, park residents chose an RC track, drones, and bocce ball as activities we wanted to add. Residents agreed to sharing expenses and labor, and this is what we ended up with! Construction began in mid-May, with dirt being trucked in and deposited on the southern half of what was then our dog park. This is actually how we came up with the name of the track: Dog Run Raceway! A consistent team of four--with many

others filling in, when possible-worked most days throughout the summer in record-setting heat to complete Dog Run Raceway. The clay and dirt surface has five jumps, plus a bridge and tunnel. It will run 1/10 scale cars or smaller, electriconly units. The control tower is handicapped-accessible. Our goal was for the track to be completed by November 1, and we are “right on track.” Alamo Palms residents are looking forward to great fun with this new activity and to sharing it with other parks in The Valley. Anyone

want to race? We have a lot to learn about RC racing but know there will be sharing of information to get where we need to be. We have a great sponsor in New Sun Racing shops in McAllen, Mercedes, Harlingen, and Brownsville, as well as great support from our Alamo Palms’ owners, Encore. Classic Chicken Marsala This 4 skinless, boneless, chicken breasts (about 1 1/2 pounds) 1 cup all-purpose flour, for dredging Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup pure olive oil or canola oil 8 ounces baby bella mushrooms, stemmed sliced 1/2 cup sweet Marsala wine 1/2 cup low or no sodium chicken stock 2 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on a cutting board and place the chicken breasts side by side on the plastic. Lay a second piece of plastic wrap over them. Pound out the breasts with a flat meat mallet, until they are about 1/4-inch thick. Put the flour in a shallow platter and season with a salt and pepper; mix to incorporate evenly. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. When the oil is nice and hot, dredge both sides of the chicken cutlets in the seasoned flour, shaking Bettina Tolin is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin, Texas. She is currently the Executive Chef and General Manager at Marcello’s Italian Restaurant & Bar on the Piazza in Port Isabel, Texas.

is a classic and delicious Italian dish. It is called Chicken Marsala because the sweet Marsala wine is the star of the sauce that finishes the dish. You could also make it with veal if you like. This recipe calls for baby portabella mushrooms but you can easily use any mushroom you prefer or can find in the supermarket. I like to serve it with light angel hair pasta but you can pair it with whatever you desire. Enjoy! •

off the excess. Carefully place cutlets into the pan and fry for 5 minutes on each side until golden, turning once – do this in batches if the pieces don’t fit well in the pan. Remove the chicken to a large platter in a single layer and keep warm. Lower the heat to medium, add the mushrooms and sauté until they are nicely browned and their moisture has evaporated, about 5 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Carefully pour the Marsala in the pan, scraping up any bits that have adhered to the

pan. Cook to reduce down for about one minute, which will also cook out the alcohol. Add the chicken stock and simmer for a minute to reduce the sauce slightly. Whisk in the butter and return the chicken to the pan; simmer gently for 1 minute to heat the chicken through. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with chopped parsley before serving with your favorite pasta.
