We blinked, and it is the end of

February! I’m not quite sure how that happened. There's a lot of truth to the old saying, ‘Time flies when you're having fun.' February is, by far, my favorite month. Not only is the air filled with love, but it's filled with smoke, as well! Puzzled? Read on! I’m sure you get where I'm coming from with love being in the air. Our hearts are full because of Valentine’s Day. We spend the early weeks of February with the ones we love, while also remembering those we’ve lost. But smoke? Well, as soon as I finish the last of the chocolate, it’s time to start thinking about the Smokin’ on the Rio BBQ cook-off. Smokin’, as we like to call it, is an annual barbecue cook-off held at the Mercedes Livestock Showgrounds. This year, it will be held this Saturday, February 25. It is so much fun, and attendees can watch barbecue teams of all shapes and sizes compete for $50,000 in prize money. There’s entertainment throughout the day, shopping, and food booths. The best thing about Smokin’ is that 100 percent of the profits go to help support our Valley youth involved in agriculture. I will be there with my husband’s barbecue team. They have competed for over 10 years. So come on out and enjoy the day with us! We'll be Smokin' on the Rio! •

We’re just connecting the dots,

RGV Shriners LaFloresta RV Park:

Fundraising Dance

February 28

22 Years of Golf for American Cancer Society at Weslaco Trailer Park Special to Welcome Home RGV

Residents

at LaFloresta RV Park, a small park in Mercedes, raised nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society in their 22nd Annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament February 11. There were 81 Winter Texans who competed in a mixed scramble. All money collected for the event, golf fees, and donations went directly to the American Cancer Society.

Special to Welcome Home RGV

Bob Fuller, a Winter Texan from St. Charles, Missouri, has been in charge of organized golf at LaFloresta RV Park for 25 years. He started the American Cancer Society tournament in 1996, and since that time, LaFloresta residents have raised over $44,000 for the American Cancer Society. •

Weslaco

Trailer Park is hosting a dance to raise funds for the RGV Shriners’ Transportation Division. This is the second year the event is being held. Last year, we raised over $2000 to help the Shriners cover their cost to take children from the Rio Grande Valley to Houston and other places for medical care. We are hoping to top that donation this year. Come out and join the fun while contributing to a great cause. Donations are also greatly appreciated, if you cannot attend. February 28 is the day, and Weslaco Trailer Park (600 S. Bridge Ave.) is the place. The dance, featuring Jack Nelson and County Line Band, will be held from 7:00-10:00 p.m., and the cost is $10. Bring your own beverage and dancing shoes. Please call 956-272-3166 to order tickets as there is limited seating available. Support the Shriners! •
