Raptors of Mexico and Central America Presentation at Quinta Mazatlan January 19 Special to Welcome Home RGV

As

I write this column, I’m counting the days for a little rest and relaxation. This Saturday, I’ll be boarding a tour bus with 80+ of you, and we’re setting sail--a whole week, of nothing but fun, food, fellowship, food, and more food! I am so excited; I can hardly wait! I hope the clothes I pack will fit when I get back. January is such a busy month, and it’s really hard to get away, but I’m doing it anyway! Luckily, I have a great team that will pick up the slack while I’m away. I haven’t been on a ‘grown up’ vacation in I can’t tell you how long. All of my vacations over the last 18 years have been centered around kid-friendly activities, so I look forward to what lies ahead. The last time I was on a cruise ship was 16 years ago; my, how cruising has changed! Water slides, rock climbing walls, and ice skating rinks are just a few of the things on our ship. (Not that I necessarily plan on climbing any rock walls or putting skates on to hit the ice--I would hate to break my ankle on the first day-but just getting away from all the chaos for a while will surely recharge my batteries.) I can’t wait to tell you all about it when we return! But for now...Bon Voyage! • We’re just connecting the dots,

Kristi

Is that a Tiny Hawk?

A Laughing Falcon? A Pearl Kite? Let’s ask one of the world’s leading authorities on raptor identification! Special guest Bill Clark will be at Quinta Mazatlan to talk about his newest book Raptors of Mexico and Central America, which debuts in April 2017. Co-written with N. John Schmitt, this guide will be a must-have for any birder interested in the 69 species of eagles, hawks, kites, vultures, and falcons found between the United States and South America. Join us Thursday, January 19, at 6 p.m. for an informative discussion on birds of prey. Bill Clark has a long career in banding and in education about raptors. He has worked as a raptor tour leader in 12 countries since 1983 and teaches Raptor ID Weekends throughout the United States. Clark has published over 140 journal articles and has cowritten two bibliographies. He is the chairman of Raptors Board of Advisors and a board member of the Belize Raptor Research Institute. Clark is also a member of the Asian Raptor Research and Conservation Network, Neotropical Raptor Network, and Raptor Research Foundation. Bill Clark is a widely sought lecturer, so don’t miss your opportunity to hear his presentation! The Nature Speaker Series takes place every Thursday evening through May and is proudly sponsored by Thurmond Eye Associates. The program fee is $3 per person, and no advance reservation is required. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset in McAllen, one block south

of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street. For more information, contact Quinta Mazatlan at 956-681-3370 or visit www. quintamazatlan.com. •
