I hope this finds you rested and ready for all that comes with a new year. January is, by far, the busiest month for all of us at Welcome Home RGV. That’s why we close the office the week between Christmas and New Year’s -- to allow us a last-minute chance to recharge our batteries before we dive in, head first, to the month of January. If you are anything like me, by the end of December, you are ready for the new year. I find myself anxious for a fresh start and motivated to make it happen. I also take the opportunity to reflect on the changes I made the year before. Last year, in January 2015, I vowed to keep plowing ahead and position Welcome Home RGV as the leader in the Winter Texan world. We made the decision to go from a monthly magazine to this weekly newspaper. I hear from you often that I made a very wise decision! The WHRGV team also made the decision to purchase the Winter Texan Expo. so when you attend this year, know it is now under our direction. It is so fun to see our hard work in action. I look forward to putting things into play for you for the fall of 2016. Until then, mum’s the word. You’ll just have to come back in November to see what we have up our sleeves. In 1990, Tina Pulido, a merchant

in Nuevo Progresso, Mexico, and a group of Winter Texans held the first Christmas Party for the children of Nuevo Progresso. The party was held on Christmas Day at the Escuela Primaria Ford 45 schoolyard, and 200 children attended. Although Tina has passed away, the party continues each year on Christmas Day. The largest party had 3,100 children attending. The party this year had approximately 2,000 children. The organization has a board of directors made up of Winter Texans from across the Valley that basically works year-round making arrangements for Christmas Day. They have an election in January each year at their final meeting to select the new board. The new board then starts making the plans for next season’s Christmas party. In November, they have a meeting to select a chairman and to finalize their plans. The volunteers meet December 23 to bring in all of the supplies that are needed for the party on Christmas morning. Candy and nuts are bagged at the school while a caravan comes from the parking lot in the United States bringing all of the other treats. It requires a number of vehicles to bring all of the cupcakes, apples, oranges, and other gifts to the school grounds for storage , just waiting for Christmas. The party starts with a parade, complete with Santa Claus, down

Main Street to the Escuela Primaria Ford 45 elementary schoolyard. Tables are set up Christmas morning to hold the variety of treats for the children. Among the items are apples, oranges, peanuts, candy, juice, cupcakes, Hershey candies, crayons, coloring books, pencils and stuffed toys. The children are given a bag at the start of the line, and it is full by the time they get to Santa Claus at the end of the line. Once the children have gone through the line, they can take their turn at the Piñatas that are hung for

them. The party lasts approximately two hours, and the children have a marvelous time. Needless to say, the Winter Texans have a great time, also. The Progresso merchants also get involved with donations for the party and help the Winter Texans see that everything goes well Christmas Day. The children look forward to Christmas Day because, for some, this IS their Christmas. Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC), in collaboration with Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC), is gearing up for the upcoming 21st Annual Mission Community Health Fair at the Sharyland High School Gymnasium, located at 1106 N. Shary Rd in Mission. Cooking Up Some Nostalgia Special to Welcome Home RGV

Consider the Potato Tree

through February is tree-planting time in the Rio Grande Valley. With a moderate to fast growth rate, the potato tree, Solanum erianthum, is something to consider. All the Valley nature park butterfly gardens have one, which seems to be a good indication that it is a must-have tree. The potato tree is a large-leaved, small, native tree with an airy, umbrella-like shape. The tree can withstand rugged pruning and can easily be shaped to fit a space. The leaves have a fine, hairy covering that gives the tree its grayish-green, pastoral look. Their velvety texture is like stroking the soft snout of a horse. When crushed, the leaves produce a scent similar to that of potatoes cooking, hence the tree’s peculiar name. Though not dramatic, the delicate white flowers bloom spring through fall. The cluster evolves into a colorful array of drupes, providing fine dining for chachalacas and other critters. Surprisingly, the unripe fruit itself is a nectar source for butterflies, like tawny and hackberry emperors. An endless number of visitors come to the leaves. Stink bugs lay eggs on

the leaves, and the resulting larvae provide food for lizards. Flies, wasps, bees, bugs and a variety of butterflies and moths use the leaves as a resting place. Wasps and beetles seem to get drunk on the ripened fruit when it splits open. Ants use the branches as a thoroughfare at dawn on their way to work. The potato tree understory is great for our few shade-loving native plants. The fruit of pigeon berry, Rivina humilis, attracts chachalacs and other birds. Ruella, (wild petunia) Ruellia nudiflora, is a host plant to several butterflies, including malachite and white peacock. Purple flowering snapdragon vine, Maurandya antirrhiniflora, a host for the common buckeye butterfly, will twine through the branches without harming the tree. The tree itself is a host plant for the creamy stripestreak butterfly. A potato tree would make a nice gift for the park’s management for planting in a common area. The glory of planting native species is that, once established, they are nearly maintenance-free. An occasional watering for the first couple of weeks will give native plants a good start. •

Pooja Chugani How and when did your organization begin and who does it serve? Infinite Love is a local, all-volunteerrun nonprofit that was founded on Valentine’s Day in 2012. We serve the community in three key ways: 1. We serve a warm, home-cooked meal to ~150 of McAllen’s homeless and less-fortunate every Tuesday and Friday evening at McAllen Municipal Park. In addition, we often provide warm clothes and other items, as

well as other assistance. 2. Every weekday, we serve lunch and comfort to patients undergoing treatment at Texas Oncology in McAllen. 3. We host regular open-group meditations at our center in Edinburg every Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m., including dinner served at no cost. Our meditations are not religious or rigid. We simply provide a peaceful space to learn about and experience meditation while connecting with our loving community of regulars. 4. Every couple of months, we host nationally and internationally recognized inspirational and uplifting speakers with no charge to attend. Where is your organization and what are the hours of operation? The Infinite Love Center is located in Edinburg. However, the center is generally only open for meditation on Wednesday evening and for our

speaking events. We do most of our operating out in the community. What kind of donations does your nonprofit organization need? Although monetary donations are appreciated, our main focus is supporting others in need. In particular, this Christmas is our fourth annual Christmas party at the park for the homeless and less fortunate. Last year, we served nearly 500 and are expecting as many this year. We will need gifts for up to 200 kids, warm clothing, toiletries, bags, wrapping paper, etc. (Editor’s Note: To meet the holiday publication deadline, this form was submitted before Christmas.) What kind of volunteer opportunities do you have for Winter Texans, Valley retirees, and others in our community? The primary opportunities are our functions at McAllen Municipal Park

and Texas Oncology. - Volunteers are welcome to stop by the park on Tuesday and Friday evening at 6 p.m. The McAllen Municipal Park is located next to McAllen High School on Quince between Bicentennial and 23rd St. - We have room for a handful of volunteers to help at the treatment center. However, a food handler’s license is required (which can be easily obtained). We also appreciate assistance with our large speaking events. (The next one is in March). Swedish Weaving--January 16 at McAllen Mobile Park Special to Welcome Home RGV

Swedish

weave is a type of surface-work embroidery in which the decorative thread, usually yarn, runs under some of the fabric’s surface threads rather than going through the fabric,. The reason for the name is uncertain, as there is no apparent historical link to Sweden. Swedish weave is sometimes called huck weaving after the fabric, huck toweling, on which it was first widely used. Popular in the US in the 1930s into the 1950s, Swedish weaving became popular again in the early part of the 21st century. This technique requires evenweave fabric; the fabric used most often is Monk’s Cloth. It has a double set of threads that are called horizontal floats and vertical floats. A bodkin, or other blunt-tip needle, is used to pull the decorative thread through one or the other set of floats. The manner in which Swedish weave is stitched dictates the designs that can be worked. Most are abstract geometrical patterns with repeats and mirror images of the design

elements. Patterns can be more or less complex depending on the size of the motifs, the number of repeats of each design segment, and how much of the fabric is covered with the design. Older designs were usually only a border, while newer designs may cover the entire piece of work. Swedish weave is usually worked from the center of the fabric out. The decorative thread is secured in the center. Then the design is worked to one side or the other until it reaches the margin. Once the first side is finished, the “stitcher”

Many “stitchers” go on to complete virtual masterpieces time and time again. What I like the most about Swedish Weaving is watching the design come alive under your fingers. I always have an afghan waiting to be started as soon as the current one is done. The hardest part after picking the pattern is choosing the right color of Monk’s Cloth and then choosing the yarn colors for it. There is no right

or wrong way to do this. is nothing like the camaraderie of the Winter Texan community. They travel for thousands of miles from all over the country to descend upon South Texas, not just for the warmer weather but to see old friends and meet new people. They call this home, for a few months a year and yet others didn’t want to leave so they stayed; we call them Converted Texans. Every year, thousands of retirees from all over America and Canada come to the best winter vacation destination in the USA, the Rio Grande Valley. The tropical climate draws them in, but the hope of seeing friends they’ve known for years seems to be as important, if not more important, than the warm weather. I too have made lifelong friends with some Winter Texans and look forward to their return every winter. The impact on me is like indelible ink; it will never go away, and for that, I’m thankful. For Valley businesses, it’s economics, and we should all be grateful for the commerce they bring to our retailers and restaurants. On a recent chilly morning, I stopped in Don Beto’s Restaurant on Business 83 in Mercedes for a bowl of hot oatmeal and some coffee. As I was dressing my oatmeal with honey and raisins, I couldn’t help but notice the number of tables with what I thought were probably Winter Texans. I was right. Alone at my table, my eyes wandered, as I was more than nosey wanting to know who they all were and where did they come from? I imagined their families “back home,” probably shoveling snow, missing their parents, and wishing they, too, were in South Texas! Once I slurped down my last bit of the tasty oats and milk, I got up to and wandered around the restaurant visiting the folks, asking questions as they ate their breakfasts and drank their coffee. I hope I didn’t bother them too much, but I just couldn’t

resist. They didn’t seem to mind, and for me, it was an awesome way to start my day. I met a couple of gentlemen who were quite boisterous for that time in the morning, full of energy. Dale and Dick live in Paradise Park in Mercedes during the winter months. Dale has been enjoying breakfast at Don Beto’s for the last 23 years. It isn’t just the food that brings them back; they have gotten to know the waitresses. Dale said Lucy knows him; after all, she has worked there for the last 32 years. He doesn’t have to order because she already knows. Don Beto started the restaurant many years ago. His daughter, Nancy, still works there though he passed away in 2006. His portrait hangs on the wall, as though he still has a watchful eye on the business. His cook, Jose Perez, now owns the place so the flavors and the service still remain… Mercedes Style. Ray and Irene from Manitoba, Canada said the first time they came back to Beto’s this season, all of the waitresses were standing behind the lunch counter clapping, welcoming them back to the Valley as they each walked in the door. Lucy, Nancy, Letty, Betty, Linda, and Norma treat the winter visitors like family – because they are. The Winter Texans are missed when gone. Venis, Betty, Doris, and Dean were enjoying each other’s company as they ate their breakfast tacos. Betty and Doris wanted me to make special note that Dean was the ornery one. I could certainly tell. Barb, Ed, and Shirley, along with seven other regulars, come a couple of times a week and always on Saturday mornings. The folks I spoke to hail from Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, New York, and beyond. They spend their winter months in parks in Weslaco, Mercedes, and La Feria. Welcome back! We love to see you in the Valley. •

Bill’s Adventures in the RGV The Hidalgo Pumphouse

The

Hidalgo Pumphouse is a unique place to visit. The Pumphouse is a museum where you can wander around the huge machinery, including the boilers. There are displays that explain the irrigation system, how the system works, and how it changed the landscape of the Valley. Prior to 1933, the Pumphouse sat on the Rio Grande River. A flood changed the course of the Rio Grande, and now the Pumphouse sits one half mile away from the river. A channel was dug from the Pumphouse to the river in order to bring river water to the huge intake pipes of the Pumphouse. This is not just a museum. The grounds adjacent to the Pumphouse are part of the World Birding Center and have been landscaped to attract birds and butterflies. Depending on the time of the year, you can see different butterflies and birds. There is an asphalt bike trail behind the Pumphouse on the levee. You can go east to the wetlands or west underneath the border crossing. I love to ride my trike from my Alamo home to the Pumphouse. December

15 was a warm, humid, bright, sunny day with moderate southeast winds. Four of us headed out, cycling to the Hidalgo Pumphouse. Going south was a tough ride. However, we were able to cruise between nine and ten MPH. We traversed Alamo, San Juan, Pharr, and McAllen on the lessor traveled roads. We headed straight south on McColl Road, right into the breath of the headwinds. Upon arrival in Hidalgo, we headed south off of Military Highway on a bicycle path that runs along the levee and through the wetlands before becoming part

of the Border Patrol road. Soon we arrived at the Hidalgo Pumphouse, thirsty, hot, and somewhat tired. This was a nice break as we explored the beautiful area around and inside the Pumphouse. Next was a visit to the Hidalgo What-a-Burger for some muchneeded food and drink for the return trip back to Alamo. We traveled the streets of Hidalgo as we headed north on 10th Street and Second Avenue with a nice push from the tailwind. We then wandered through the residential streets of McAllen, past a home where its owners have taken their sport to the extreme. On the

back side of the two-story home is a rock-climbing wall. We took a short break to drink while we viewed this unique home. Afterwards, we headed east and then north, winding through Pharr, San Juan, and eventually Alamo to our homes. Total mileage for this trip was 38 miles. Ever wonder what the Valley was

like “back in the day,” when ocelots roamed free, bobcats meandered through thorn scrub forests, and the Rio Grande coursed a different path? Rio Grande Valley Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists learn how the Lower Valley was formed, how it progressed, and how to help preserve the native nature of our amazing lands and wildlife. They learn the gamut of our unique ecosystem through a series of lectures and field trips led by local university professors, field experts from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and noted authors, photographers, and other local professionals. The RGVTMN is a volunteer educational program of the Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Sea Grant. It is designed for people who want to learn about, and help sustain, the Lower Valley’s native resources. Members’ volunteer hours equal dollars for the state when requesting federal grants in support of current and future nature conservation

projects, including many in our Lower Valley counties. There are chapters throughout Texas. The local advisor is Texas AgriLife’s Extension Agent Tony Reisinger. Javier de León is the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department advisor. Training is region-specific. The RGVCTMN is open to residents and Winter Texans of Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties. Weekly evening classes are at the Cameron County Annex Building in San Benito each Wednesday from January 13 through mid-April. Training also includes hands-on work through mentored volunteer opportunities at area nature centers and numerous other TMN partners in the Lower Valley. Getting into the program is easy. and many of us are Winter Texans, but I wonder how many of both groups realize the rich history of Texas music. Probably one of the most popular and well-known Texas musicians is Willie Nelson, who was born in Abbott, Texas, and following close behind Willie would be the man whom many authorities recognize as a co-founder of Western Swing, singer and fiddle player Bob Wills. But country music is not the be-alland-end-all of Texas music. Blues, rockabilly, rock-and-roll, jazz, and R and B, all have a deep history in the Lone Star State, and the Hispanic heritage of the state has spawned many legendary performers. A list of western artists with Texas roots reads like a who’s who of country music: George Jones, George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker (“Mr Bojangles”), Mac Davis, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, Clint Black, and Lyle Lovett, to name just a few. Add to that list two of the true legends of country music, Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves, who both grew up in Panola County in East Texas. George Strait, by the way, holds the world record for more number-one hit singles than any other artist in the history of music on any chart or in any genre, having recorded 58 number-one hit singles as of 2011. If you drive to the Valley via US Hwy 83, you most probably pass through Uvalde, which is the birthplace of Dale Evans, who was, of course, the wife of probably the most famous of the singing cowboys, Roy Rogers. One of the first major rock-and-roll stars was Buddy Holly, who was born and raised in Lubbock. The movie bio pic, The Buddy Holly Story, starred Gary Busey as Holly. Busey is also Texan born. Wink, Texas is the birthplace of Roy Orbison and one of his contemporaries, the man who had a hit recording with “Party Doll,” Buddy Knox. is another Texan. Another Knox hit was, “I Think I’m Gonna Kill Myself.” Not quite what you’d expect from someone born in Happy, TX! There are way more Texan country artists than Texans in any other genre, but Texas produced several great jazz performers, too. Fort Worth gave us saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Ragtime composer Scott Joplin, The Entertainer, hailed from Linden, Texas, and one of the fathers of be-bop and an electric guitar pioneer, Charlie Christian, was born in Bonham, Texas. Trumpeter and

band leader Harry James, although born in Georgia, moved to Beaumont as a teenager, and another Joplin, this time Janis, was a native of Port Arthur. The Port Arthur/Beaumont area was also the birthplace of JP Richardson, otherwise known as the Big Bopper, he of “Chantilly Lace” fame. Anyone remember that hit song in the 50s, “Let’s Think about Living”? The singer who reached No. 7 in the Billboard charts with that novelty song in 1960 was born in Blackjack, Texas. His name was ………. (Answer at the end of this article) After Mississippi, Texas has produced more bona fide stars in the blues field than any other state, from early pioneers, such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin Hopkins to such guitar greats as Freddy King, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter. and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Freddy King’s most famous instrumental composition has been recorded by countless white blues artists, including Eric Clapton. What’s the name of the piece? (Answer at the end of this article.) Elvis Presley ………. No, of course he wasn’t from Texas! But after hearing Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog,” which was recorded for Peacock Records in Houston, he decided to cut it himself. The Sir Douglas Quintet, despite their British-sounding name, was from San Antonio, Texas. They had several hits. Their biggest hit reached #13 in the charts in 1965, and the title was? (Answer below) Tejano music is a truly original Texas fusion of several different musical influences, such as German polka, Mexican rancheras, jazz, and zydeco, among others. Lydia Mendoza, with her booming 12-string guitar, was one of the first stars of Tejano. Flaco Jiménez is a world-renowned accordion player in the genre, and San Benito native, the late Freddie Fender, mixed Tejano with country, especially with his allstar band, The Texas Tornados, in the 90s. Selena Quintanilla helped bring the genre even more attention in the 1990s, adding influences from Mexican cumbia and R&B. Currently, San Angelo band Los Lonely Boys is fusing Tejano with contemporary blues and jazz. Tavern Beef • 1 lean beef roast, such as rump or eye round, about three pounds • 1 individual package Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix (or use the store brand dry ranch dressing mix) • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced • ¾ cup hot tap water Spray the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray and preheat the cooker on LOW for about 10 minutes with the lid on. Trim off any visible exterior fat from the roast and place it in the cooker. Add the sliced onions on top of the roast. Mix the ranch dressing with the hot water and pour over the meat. Cover and cook on LOW for at least eight hours or until the meat can be shredded easily with two forks. Serve on the crusty rolls; use some of the juice for dipping, if desired. The couple is teaming up with Wade and Teresa Landry for a special show at Mission Bell in Mission, January 12 at 7p.m. and will feature each couple plus bring them all together on stage. Wade, an accomplished Cajun fiddler/singer, and Teresa, a fantastic singer, perform in Branson. The show promises hot fiddling, guitar picking, and lots of great country and Cajun singing! Freddie has played guitar for Ferlin Husky and Red Sovine, just to name a couple. He also backed up singersongwriter, Ian Tyson (writer of the Carter Family’s Four Strong Winds) and fiddler Al Cherney, who was a regular on the Tommy Hunter Show, a Canadian music show that aired for years. The married duo has performed at resorts each winter in Texas, Arizona, and California for 15 years and across western Canada in the summer. Freddie and Sheila operated a guitar and music camp at their ranch outside the small town of Birch Hills, SK (1 ½ hours north of Saskatoon) for 12 years. They now partner with a fly-in fishing camp in northern SK to provide a unique fishing and guitar instruction experience. Teaching the Joy of Dancing

Ron and Jan Betzelberger of Lincoln, Illinois, and Alamo, Texas, have been square dancing since 1976. Ron started calling and teaching in 1980. They have been round dancing since 1982. In 2004, they started teaching rounds, filling the void of round dance leadership in Central Illinois. They travel throughout Illinois and adjacent states calling MS and PLUS and cueing PH II, III and IV. They have donated their time and talent doing hundreds of FUN NIGHT programs, which include introduction to square and round dancing for churches, schools, and civic organizations. Hundreds of couples have learned the joy of dancing through their efforts. In recent years, they have been wintering in the Rio Grande Valley where Ron calls and teaches at the Alamo Palms RV and Mobile Park in Alamo. They have attended many national and state conventions, with Ron being the round dance program chairman for the Illinois State Convention in 2008, 2010, and 2011. They have written several

round dances that can be seen on the web if you look for “Cue Sheets From All Over.” Ron and Jan were married in 1964 and have two children and six grandchildren. Ron is a private pilot, and they fly their Cessna Skyhawk regularly to visit family and friends. They are active members of the Jefferson Street Christian Church and sing in the choir. They are members of the American Callers Association, Lincoln Elks Club, Lincoln Kiwanis Club and the Lincoln Park and Recreation Organization. •

Pausewang, collectively known as Southern Anthem, are a fresh and popular country and gospel band. From church auditoriums, fairs and festivals, to Branson, national television appearances, and requests from Nashville and beyond, the demand for their unique family harmony now has them traveling full-time across the U.S. What started as a need to have interim talent at a local theater production has grown into a full-time mission. Although the group began singing in church years ago, they never dreamed it would lead to the calling that God placed in their hearts. October 13. He was adopted by Jim and Janet Sager in Deshler, Ohio, when he was six months old. Early in his life, John found his musical talents. At nine years old, he was already taking piano lessons. He has been singing since high school, winning the Best Male Vocalist award his junior and senior years. He sang in the choir and was also involved in band, playing the trombone and the tuba. John has always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, and while attending college, one of his good friends helped him learn. It was a little different since John plays the guitar left-handed. It all started when people would ask John to sing for their weddings. Eventually it led to John singing at funerals, also. John attends Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Deshler, Ohio. One day the Sister from the parish sent him a letter about a singing contest to help battered women in Toledo, Ohio. John never had done such a thing, but he thought if Sister thought it was a good cause then he’d try it. He sent in a demo CD and was chosen as one of the top 10 to sing out of over 100 contestants. John won this contest, The Toledo Idol, in 2003. From there he had the honor of opening for Mr. BJ Thomas at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo, and John received a standing ovation after his performance. From there on, John entered the Erie Street Market Idol and the Findlay Idol contests in 2004 and won both of these, as well. John opened for Mr. Bobby Rydell at the Ritz Theater in Tiffin, Ohio, in 2005. He also received another standing ovation for his outstanding performance. John was also on television on channel FOX 36 in Toledo for The Toledo Idol. In April 2009, John was able to fulfill his dream of moving to Branson, Missouri. On that CD, the popular song “Unchained Melody” was nominated for Best Song of the Year. John was also nominated and won Best Male Vocalist of Branson from Branson Show Awards. Also in 2010, John headed down to the Rio Grande Valley, where he performed over 40 shows in three months. During that time, John won “Best Male Vocalist of South Texas” and “Best Male Entertainer” from a newspaper in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2011 while back in Branson, John started a lunch show at Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Cafe’. Branson Show Awards decided to only give out 50 awards for 2011. In Branson, there are over 300 shows with many great entertainers. After listening to John’s show, the committee again nominated John for Best Male Vocalist. Without John knowing, they also nominated his CD, Faith, Hope and Love, for Best Gospel CD of Branson for 2011. John won Best Male Vocalist again, and his CD also won Best Gospel CD of Branson for 2011. That same year, his second year down in the Rio Grande Valley, John once again won Best Male Vocalist from the Valley publication. This was the first year that the Star Awards at Victoria Palms was instituted. With over 1,600 votes, John also won Best Male Vocalist and Best Overall Entertainer in the Rio Grande Valley. •

Sweet Water Band in the Rio Grande

Valley is a local dance band from McAllen that was formed in the early 1990s. The band consisted of four players; guitar, keyboard, bass, and drums. We usually played at night clubs, honky tonk bars, and outdoor venues. Having a keyboard player allows us to play at Tejano venues. For formal Tejano events, such as weddings and quinceaneras, we would hire an accordion player and play local Tejano favorites. In 1998, the band found a new venue. We played at the Riverside Club, Pepe’s on the River, and El Charco, which helped get more recognition. We were then able to play at many Winter Texan Halls for their weekly dances. In 2007, we replaced the keyboard with the steel guitar, which gave the band a real country music flavor.

The current band members are Kenny Kolberg on the steel guitar, Frank Zamora on the bass guitar, Bruce Kolberg on the drums, and Javier Moroles, guitar and lead vocals. Playing music has always been a big part of our band members’ lives. Most of us have been playing in bands since as early as 14 years of age and hope to keep on playing music for many more years. Look for the Sweet Water Band in the parks throughout the Valley. Come up and say “Hi!” We always enjoy meeting people. •

helping us establish a dedicated tree-planting fund for McAllen. You can do this by participating in any of our events and by learning about planting your own trees. What are Tick-borne Diseases? Special to Welcome Home RGV

tick-borne disease refers to bacterial organism (known as Rickettsia) transmitted through the bite of a tick. The most commonly known tick-borne disease is Lyme disease. Lyme disease is not prevalent in the Rio Grande Valley; however, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma are considered endemic in the Valley. The Rickettsial disease is transmitted through a continual tick bite, with transmission being able to occur as early as 12 hours of attachment. The disease can also be transmitted through to humans, but only through the bite of a tick. The Rickettsia attacks the blood, mainly through the platelets, and can cause serious bleeding abnormalities. Clinical signs in a dog with the tick disease can have several different presentations. A typical dog presents with lethargy, unexplained bleeding/

bruising, fever, and anorexia. Other presentations may also include vomiting, diarrhea, vague signs of not doing well, and even neurological deficits. The Rickettsial disease may be diagnosed through running a quick in-house laboratory test called a 4dx, but in early disease, a larger send-off blood test may be necessary. Treatment entails a specific antibiotic, along with the appropriate supportive care (e.g. treatment of bleeding disorder, antivomiting medications). Response to treatment usually carriers a favorable prognosis; however, some dogs may be life-long carriers of the disease. Prevention is the key factor in avoiding this tick-borne disease. There are many preventative measures available on the market. Talk to your veterinarian about which one is the best option for your pet. •

Memorial Library, along with the City of Mission and Mission EDC, is proud to present to our Mission residents FREE INTERNET ACCESS AT HOME via “Mobile HotSpot Devices” (MiFi’s). Our library has made an investment to provide access to the digital world by acquiring 20 devices that qualifying patrons can check out using their library cards. MiFi’s are powered by Verizon’s network. Once charged, MiFi’s will allow users to stay connected for up to 20 hours and can also serve as a universal charger for external devices low on battery. Up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices will be allowed to connect at one time to hotspots such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. At present, Mission residents can checkout MiFi’s for a period of three days. Through the hotspots, patrons will have at-home access to Speer Memorial Library’s online resources such as: e-books, e-magazines, job and career information, college

preparation, high school equivalency and online classes. “It’s important for libraries to serve the community in new and innovative ways. Nowadays, having Internet is a necessity, and we are wishing to expand access to our Mission residents” said Martin Garza Jr., city manager. Johnny Mathis, Kris Kristofferson, Mike Nesmith of the Monkees, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Debbie Reynolds and Meatloaf. And, finally, no survey of Texas music would be complete without mention of Kinky Friedman, a true Texas legend. Although born in Chicago, he moved to Texas as a child, and by 1971, he had formed his most well-known band, Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys, which many took to be a play on the name of the famous band Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. His repertoire mixed social commentary (“We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You”) and maudlin ballads with raucous humor (such as “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in Bed”). Kinky also has a successful writing career,

with several novels, plus a regular column for Texas Monthly magazine. He ran for political office several times, once for governor of Texas in 2006. One of his stated goals is the “dewussification” of Texas. Among his campaign slogans was “He ain’t Kinky, he’s my Governor,” a play on “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” In 2014, Friedman made a bid for state agriculture commissioner and was narrowly defeated, so we may not have heard the last of this true Texan. An Introduction to Valley Golf Courses Adobe Wells: From Citrus Grove to Golf Course Special to Welcome Home RGV

Wells Golf Course is a private course for the use of their park residents. Wally and Gene McClendon owned the property and were citrus farmers. Hurricane Beulah came along and wiped out over half of their grove in 1967, and they decided to build an RV park to replace the citrus trees. Wally had been an avid golfer, so he decided that his park needed a course. Over the years, more land was purchased and developed into sites for mobile homes, park models, and RV units. The golf course went from a 9-hole to an 18-hole over the years. The residents of the park volunteered a lot of time and talent to make the park what it is today. In 1982, the Homeowners’ Association was established, in 1986, the park was annexed into the City of McAllen, and by 1988, the park became resident-owned-

The Rio Grande Valley is blessed with great weather, as well as great golf courses. There is a course for every player, from beginners to accomplished golfers. There are more than twenty 18hole courses throughout the Valley and almost as many nine-hole courses. Some of the nine-hole courses are Par 3s, which are perfect for the beginner and for our older citizens who still enjoy the game but are unable to play a larger course. Some of the courses are public and some are private. In each publication, Welcome Home RGV will highlight one of the Valley’s great golf courses.

Meet You Soon... at the Masterpiece Café—A Gem of a Place with

ave you ever gone through your jewelry box and found a piece of jewelry you had long ago forgotten and yet it was a delightful gem that just sparkled? You were completely unaware this little gem existed, but there it was tucked away in a corner waiting to be discovered. Such is the Masterpiece Café--a little gem of a place to have lunch. My wife and I were told of this jewel of a cafe and decided to check it out. Tucked inside a framing and art gallery, we were taken in by its warmth and beauty. With intimate little tables and surrounded by works

of art, one has the feeling you are in a Paris Bistro. The pictures and mirrors add so much to your dining pleasure. The food was excellent, and so was the service. They offer several sandwiches and soups for your luncheon pleasure. They also have a great choice of salads. We decided on half-sandwiches and a cup of soup. That day they offered two soups: chicken noodle and enchilada chicken. We both went for the enchilada soup. Mine was accompanied by a tuna salad sandwich, and my wife, the chicken salad. The tuna salad was very nice, and my wife loved the chicken salad. Both of us felt the soup was delicious. They have many choices of other sandwiches. The turkey sandwich looked very good. Next time I plan to try a salad, as they change frequently. They offer quite a nice array of desserts. We had a creme cake with coconut icing. It was moist and rich, and I was sorry I split it with my wife. I will have a piece all to myself next time! They have great coffee, and my iced tea was terrific. Although the service is good, you are not bothered,

so you can enjoy the decor. The paintings are for sale if you cannot resist. If you want a respite from this hectic world, surrounded by beauty, you cannot beat Masterpiece! We just loved dining there and felt totally relaxed. Masterpiece Cafe is located in McAllen’s Uptown Plaza at 4500 N. 10th St., Suite 135. It is open only for lunch, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. I sure hope to meet you soon at Masterpiece. It is a really special little bistro (and a lot less expensive than Paris). •

has always been my special pleasure to wear a halo or a Santa Claus hat around the house starting early in December when I put up the Christmas tree and decorate my home. A halo makes me feel angelic, even though I know I am not. I have many different styles of Santa hats that help me maintain the Christmas spirit, and I switch them out as the season progresses. The excitement of Christmas is in the anticipation--the anticipation of giving and receiving gifts, a holdover from childhood when it was the only time we received them, and knowing that there will be parties and occasions that justify wearing clothes that sparkle and glitter. Of course we know the Reason for the Season is the birth of Jesus, but I suspect few dwell on it except when in the sanctuary of a church. The shocking thing is when the day after Christmas arrives, it is SO OVER! It would never occur to me to wear my halo or a Santa hat after the 25th of December. Why must that be? In fact, by the time the 26th arrives, I have to wrestle with the burning desire to take down every single decoration that festoons my house. Good Lutherans leave the tree up until Epiphany*, on or about the 6th of January. Not me. I start planning “take down” on the evening of Christmas Day. It is over. Done.

Lovely as it was, it is history! That is the way with most events…it is always in the anticipation of happy times. It is probably a good thing or we would be in a constant state of anticipation, which could be tiring. By New Year’s Day, my hats and haloes are boxed and ready for transfer to the storage shed. I would not even consider putting either one on my head at that point in time. When it’s over, it’s over. *The meaning of epiphany is the celebration of the Magi deeming the Christ Child as the Son of God and savior of mankind. The Eastern churches have different interpretations of epiphany, but the word comes from the Greek word meaning a “manifestation” or a “striking appearance.” • M. Creamy Chicken and

Corn Chowder It appears winter has arrived here in the Laguna Madre area. Yay! I actually love this type of dreary weather – mainly because it inspires me to prepare tasty, hearty soups, chili and chowders. Here is a perfect winter dish that is easy to prepare and is supremely comforting on these chilly and damp nights. Don’t forget the warm crusty baguette for serving! 4 chicken breasts, cubed Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons butter, divided 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil 1 large Vidalia (sweet) onion, diced 10 to 12 thyme sprigs, tied in a bundle with kitchen twine 2 bay leaves 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 4 cups low or no sodium chicken stock 2 russet potatoes, peeled and medium diced 8 ounces frozen white corn 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups ½ & ½ 1 cup heavy cream Crusty bread for serving, such as baguette Bettina Tolin is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin, Texas. She has cooked in the kitchens of the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, Florida. She is currently the Executive Chef and General Manager at Marcello’s Italian Restaurant and Bar in Port Isabel, Texas.

Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Add 2 tablespoons of the butter and the oil to a large stock pot on medium-high heat. When the butter is melted and oil is hot, add the chicken. Brown on all sides, and then remove the meat to a plate. Lower the heat slightly and add the onions, thyme and bay leaves. Season onions with salt and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until the garlic is tender, about 4 minutes more. Take care not to burn the garlic. Return the chicken back to the pot and add the stock. Raise the heat, bringing to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Then add the potatoes and frozen corn and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer approximately 30 more minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Meanwhile, make a paste by combining with the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter and the flour in a small bowl and set aside. Once the potatoes are tender, be sure to remove the thyme sprigs and the bay leaves and discard. Lower the heat slightly and add the ½ & ½, cream and the flour paste in small amounts. Whisk to allow the flour to blend into the chowder and thicken it. Taste; and season with salt and pepper as needed. Transfer the chowder to serving bowls and enjoy with some crusty bread! This chowder pairs well with a creamy chardonnay, such as La Crema.
