hello

Fifty years of the RGV Ballet’s The Nutcracker. It’s almost as old as I am! I can remember a field trip to the McAllen Civic Center when I was in elementary school; it was a highlight of the year. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see it, I strongly suggest you go this year! I might even go with you.

As I look back on it, when I first saw RGV Ballet’s Nutcracker , it was in its early years. We grew up together. Fifty years is an incredible accomplishment. As I think about Welcome Home RGV’s 15th anniversary, I can only hope to make it to 50. However, when that happens, I’ll likely be retired, just like you! But then again, everything we do is focused on protecting the winter lifestyle, so the thought of someday making it to 50 years doesn’t seem that out of reach.

We celebrate the success of Deborah Case, the RGV Ballet, and the ballet company’s cultural contributions to our community. It’s just not the holidays without The Nutcracker!

Dancing and Inspiring for 50 Years Dancing and Inspiring for 50 Years

A n unprecedented milestone for South Texas is approaching: the 50th anniversary of the Rio Grande Valley Ballet and The Nutcracker, five decades of sparking inspiration and joy through dance.

The RGV Ballet was founded by

Doria Avila and Alfred J. Gallagher in 1972. Avila hailed from Donna, Texas, and served in WWII before beginning his renowned dance career.

His 2005 obituary read, “The Nutcracker” was one of the “longest running tourist attractions in South Texas history.”

Today, the RGV Ballet company is comprised of students from the Deborah Case Dance Academy.

Case, a professional dancer, moved to the Valley in 1976 and met Avila in ’78. Avila saw something

in her, assigning her tasks such as fundraising and organizing school visits. “I enjoyed it; never thought of it as work. Just something I was meant to do,” she says.

In hindsight, Avila was training and mentoring Case for the role of a lifetime. She recalls, in 1993, when Avila was ready to retire. He thoughtfully said to her, “It looks like you believe in the work we do here.” Her emphatic reply: “Absolutely!”

With a handshake agreement in a parking lot, Avila appointed Case the artistic director of the RGV Ballet.

At the helm, Case made changes, initially presenting other ballet companies in McAllen. The first was the St. Petersburg Ballet. That arrangement led to a meeting Case describes as instantly life changing. Galina Mezentseva, former prima ballerina with the Kirov Ballet,

taught Case the Vaganova Ballet Academy syllabus. “She literally retrained me,” Case says, helping her shift focus within the company to the technical aspects of the art form, producing visible, positive results within the dancers.

Case became known for plucking siblings of students from the sidelines. Case-in-point: Academy instructor Michael Rodriguez. “Well, he was in the lobby. All I know is every kid should dance,” Case recalls with a laugh.

Rodriguez says Case instilled in him a pride and passion for the art form. “There’s so much rich history. The more we build on that rich history, the more we’re able to instill in our students.”

Former student Amanda Thompson grew up with Case and The Nutcracker, which has become a family affair. Her brothers, Will and Matt Kauffmann, were sideline draftees. Today, Will

The Badlands and Her Musical Family Led to Destiny for Brenda Coin

Brenda grew up on a farm and ranch outside of Dickinson, North Dakota. The Badlands setting and a musical family background were the perfect combination to inspire true country music.

Brenda began singing at an early age, which led to many talent competitions and the honor of second runner-up in the Miss Dickinson Pageant in 1979. Brenda toured with many bands and eventually started her own band, Quarter Moon. The road was a great “training camp” in her career.

Brenda sang in many Branson shows and venues, including the Vance Greek Show, the Eddie Cash Show, the Buck Trent Show, the Brumley Music Show, the Branson Divas, and the Jukebox Jamboree at the God and Country Theaters.

The highlight of Brenda’s career was working with Charley Pride as a feature and back-up singer at his theater and at the Grand Palace Theater in Branson. She also toured with Charley in England, Ireland, and Scotland. Brenda sang with him on several cruise ships, working

alongside Tim McGraw, Shenandoah, John Anderson, and Alison Krauss & Union Station. She performed with Charley and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, too.

Brenda entertained audiences in the Rio Grande Valley as part of The Coins for 10 years. Now she is venturing out on her own and singing with fellow entertainers.

Catch Brenda at the Winter Texan Expo Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. •

For Goldwing Express, it’s a Family Affair

Goldwing Express is a bluegrass, country, and gospel band originally from Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The band consists of three brothers and their father. Their mother, Juanita, who was a full-blooded Native American Creek Indian, named the band Goldwing Express after their hobby of riding Goldwing motorcycles in the 80s.

Bob Baldridge, the patriarch of the family, plays mandolin and sings lead for the group. He also provides a lot of the comedy for Goldwing Express. His musical career began in the early 70s with his brothers and sister. The family would gather at their grandmother’s house and have all-day singalongs. Bob eventually wanted to form his own family band. Then came Paul, Steven, and Shawn.

When their children were young, Anita and Bob decided to buy the boys instruments. Thirty-nine years later, they are still entertaining. A segment of their performance is often dedicated to their Indian heritage, and they wear Native

American headdresses to represent their Creek Indian tribe.

In Nashville, Tennessee, Goldwing Express was nominated for Bluegrass Entertainer - Band of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) from 20032006, and the group won the Valley Star Family Entertaining Band of the Year in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas four times.

Goldwing Express will be the first group to perform at the 2023 Winter Texan Expo. They hit the stage Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. •

An Alluring Journey to Cozumel

The Allure of the Seas is the largest cruise ship to dock in Texas since Royal Caribbean opened its new, state-of-the-art port to accommodate it. Travel by Welcome Home had front row seats to Allure’s inaugural departure from the Port of Galveston in November.

While aboard the four-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, travel agent Kristy Meyer (a.k.a. Travel Kristy) and Kristi Collier attended lectures about what the liner company has in store for cruising. In addition, staterooms of all sizes were open to agents for viewing to better help travelers select the perfect accommodations.

The journey was definitely the focus, but the destination did not

disappoint. Cozumel is home to beautiful beaches and a welcoming community!

The Allure of the Seas will host 2023’s Cruise with Kristi in February. If you have any questions about the ship or to book your next cruise, contact “T.K.” at 956-687-5115. •

McAllen One of the Best Cities for Veterans

This past Veterans Day, there were all the usual gestures of appreciation from the public, lawmakers, and companies who offer freebies to active and former members of the uniformed armed services. There are, however, far more substantive and perennial publicly funded services for the veterans who served their country.

All veterans are entitled to certain benefits, but there are state-specific, even city-specific benefits veterans can be entitled to. Some cities may not offer specific benefits, but they have a large community of vets, more jobs that can be suitable for veterans, or they offer more health services.

According to an index of 38 metrics created by data blog LawnStarter, McAllen, Texas, ranks as the 19th

best city for veterans out of the 200 largest U.S. cities. McAllen’s highestranking category in the index is medical health care, which includes the concentration of VA health centers, urgent care, and emergency care facilities.

About 3,385 veterans live in McAllen, accounting for 3.4% of the city’s total population, according to five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

A full explanation of the index, categories, and methodology used in this ranking is available from LawnStarter’s report 2023’s Best Cities for Veterans.

Note: You can find it on lawnstarter. com by typing “veterans” in the search box. You can see more of Samuel Stebbins reporting on this by going to 247wallst.com and typing “veterans” in the search box. •

Texas Historical Commission Celebrates Re-Lighting of Port Isabel Lighthouse with Free Public Event

Witness the first official lighting of the historic lighthouse in 117 years.

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site will commemorate the first official lighting of the historic lighthouse in 117 years at 6:30 p.m. December 9.

The THC funded and coordinated the reproduction of a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens to be fitted into the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse. The new installation will offer visitors a glimpse into the working past of the lighthouse and the service it provided to the Gulf Coast.

“The Port Isabel Lighthouse is a major heritage attraction for visitors, offering a glimpse into the past of the community and its maritime history,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC. “Thanks to the support of the Texas Legislature and our statewide leaders, visitors will now see the lighthouse much as it would have appeared more than a century ago.”

Admission fees will be waived for the lighthouse and the Keeper’s Cottage December 9 and 10.

Who: Texas Historical Commission (THC) and City of Port Isabel

What: Free public event to celebrate the lighting of the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Refreshments will be available after the dedication ceremony.

When: Friday, December 9, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Where: Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site, 421 East Queen Isabella Blvd., Port Isabel, Speakers and Event Program: Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema THC Executive Director Mark Wolfe Mayor of Port Isabel Martin Cantu Jr. Countdown to official lighting of the lighthouse

The Fresnel lens changed the world and saved countless lives. The new technology was a monumental step forward in lighthouse lighting technology and maritime safety. The lens could produce an unlimited number of flashing combinations and intensified the light so it could be seen at greater distances, allowing mariners a greater deal of safety in their navigations near shore.

At the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site, Dan Spinella and the team at ArtWorks Florida have replicated a functional Fresnel lens, pedestal, and lamp, based on a 19th century plan showing the design of the lens specific to the site. There are a number of Fresnel lenses operating inside lighthouses, but you can also find them inside numerous everyday items: magnifying glasses, cameras, traffic lights, solar panels, modern VR technology, and many more.

Operated by the City of Port Isabel, the Port Isabel Lighthouse is a Texas Historical Commission state historic site. It was built in 1852 to protect maritime traffic in the Brazos Santiago Pass. The Point Isabel Lighthouse (later changed to “Port Isabel”) was active off and on until it was decommissioned in 1905. As the last Texas lighthouse open to the public, visitors can explore the exhibits in the reconstructed Keeper’s Cottage before climbing up the 72foot lighthouse and enjoying beautiful coastal views.

The 1888 lens was removed from its perch and the tower sat darkened until it became a Texas State Park in 1952. For the past several decades, the lighthouse has been ornamentally illuminated, continuing its service as a beacon for travelers and locals.

In 2019, the property was transferred from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to the Texas Historical Commission. The THC quickly began work to source funds and support refitting the lantern room with a historically accurate reproduction of a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens, guaranteeing an authentic and welcoming environment to anyone who wishes to explore the tower and observe the Gulf Coast from an extraordinary vantage point.

The THC manages 34 state historic sites, the Texas Heritage Trails Program, the Texas Main Street Program, and many more heritage tourism and historic preservation initiatives across the state. For more information, visit thc.texas.gov.

Boot Camp Visits

McAllen’s PAC

This season’s Welcome Home RGV Activity Director Boot Camp finished big with a behind-the-scenes tour of the incredible McAllen Performing Arts Center, followed by lunch at Bubba’s 33 in McAllen.

A GPS Does Not End Confusion

Back in November 2015, I wrote an article about all of the streets and roads with numerous names and getting lost while using a GPS. After the recent Welcome Home RGV Boot Camp for RV park and resort activity directors, I decided it was time for an updated version.

Many people got lost along the way because there were just too many choices on their GPS. It seems a number of our streets have the same name, so the GPS adds E, W, S, N, Ave., Blvd., or just St. You select the wrong one, and you end up in the wrong place.

I had one couple ask, “Did you know there are two Performing Arts Centers in McAllen?” No, there aren’t; there are just two different addresses. I told them it was the one across from the McAllen Convention Center,

and they knew right where it was (though going around all of the road closures within the Convention Center area was a trick in and of itself.) I think I put at least five miles on my car trying to find the correct area to park, and I had a passenger who helped me make wrong turning decisions.

Others had difficulty finding the South Texas EcoTourism Center in Laguna Vista. Of course, it IS a new facility located on Highway 100. The problem was, a number of people (including me) did not realize Laguna Vista was a town. I recognized Los Fresnos (because of all of the construction), but then I thought the rest was Port Isabel until you cross the Causeway to go to South Padre Island. Little did I know.

This being said, we had a great Boot Camp and showed a number of new activity directors what the Rio Grande Valley has to offer. •

Ring in the New Year on South Padre Island

End the year with a bang by watching a beautiful display of lights fire over the bay. The City of South Padre Island will host a New Year’s Eve Firework Display December 31 at 9:00 p.m. The fireworks will launch off the bay at the Entertainment District. Visitors can grab a seat at one of the bayside restaurants for the best view possible. Enjoy delicious food and refreshing drinks while the family watches the dazzling fireworks. The night will still be young, so you can spend the rest of New Year’s Eve with some of our Island partners who host special events to celebrate the new year.

Start the new year with a shock to the system by participating in Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill’s 25th Annual Polar Bear Dip. Many on South Padre Island have a long-standing tradition of coming together and entering the chilling water. The event is held New Year’s

Day, January 1, 2023, and the dip will happen at noon. Afterward, you can warm yourselves up with a hot meal at Clayton’s and enjoy some refreshing drinks to celebrate the first event of 2023. This is the perfect event to kick off the new year. The water will feel freezing for many as South Padre Island natives are not used to the cold temperatures. But for visitors from the north, this dip will feel like a warm swim as the water temperatures average between 60 and 70 degrees.

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Michigan

One of the best ways to entertain friends is with a salad luncheon. Let everyone bring a salad, and you fix one to impress the others. This one features Michigan cherries, some of the best ever!

Dried Cherry Chicken Salad

4 boneless chicken breast halves Chicken broth, canned or boxed 1 cup dried, red, tart Michigan cherries

3 stalks celery, coarsely chopped 2 Granny Smith apples, coarsely chopped 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1¼ cups real mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip ½ cup chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon fruit vinegar, such as raspberry Salt and pepper to taste

Poach the chicken breasts in chicken broth (canned or boxed is fine) until tender. Cool and tear them into bite-sized pieces Mix the cherries, chicken, celery, apples, and pecans in a large bowl. Combine the mayonnaise, parsley and (raspberry) vinegar in a large bowl, mixing well. Add this to the chicken mixture and toss lightly to coat the pieces well. Season with salt and pepper. Chill for at least 2 hours for flavors to blend. Mound onto a serving platter lined with large lettuce leaves, garnished with a few more cherries. Serves 6.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook meat and onions until meat loses red color. In a saucepan, melt the Velveeta cheese with the tomato sauce, milk, and tomatoes and green chilies. Pour 1/3 cup of the cheese mixture into the meat, saving the rest. Heat the vegetable oil in a small frying pan. Dip the tortillas into the heated oil until slightly brown on the edges. Be careful not to over-brown. Place a small portion of the cooked meat into each tortilla and roll it up. Place the rolled tortilla in a 13x9 pan. Repeat with all of the remaining tortillas. When the pan is full, pour the rest of the cheese sauce over all the rolled tortillas. Heat for 5-10 minutes or until the tacos are hot but not brown.

Things I Have Learned

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

Good to the Last Berry

Today’s Wisdom: Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.

~Dalai

I had a melancholy moment recently while working in my garden. Our 25-year-old strawberry patch needed to be pulled up. When it was younger, it produced well, producing a generous harvest of nice berries. However, over the years, the trees near it had grown tall, and now that patch was mostly in the shade. Very few berries came from it anymore, and the plants looked scrawny and tired.

So there I was, on my knees, grabbing each plant and pulling-along with a handful of weeds, Most of the plants were reluctant to leave and resisted my efforts, but eventually I won out. The plants ended up in the compost. Today that spot is clean and newly tilled, just waiting for a new crop to be planted next spring--hopefully something more shade tolerant.

As I kneeled and pulled, it occurred to me that those

strawberries were not so different from me. I, too, had been much more productive in my earlier years. I still try, but the output is signifi cantly diminished. And like the berry plants, I am still working to hang in there and do what I can. Also, like those plants, there are a few weeds that have worked themselves into my living space.

As I pondered all that, searching for some profound meaning, I finally came to the conclusion that there wasn’t one. The logical end of the parable would be that there is a natural end, and we all need to be culled out and replaced. Well, to heck with that!

I don’t plan to be replaced. One of the things I have learned is that we actually can’t be replaced…only followed in succession. Unlike those old plants, which no one will miss, we are all important. Someone in this world needs each of us, at whatever level we are still functioning. If there is still a berry or two in our future, we need to be nurtured until that last berry comes.

If there is some obscure message in those old plants, it came from the two or three that still had a berry hanging on. I enjoyed those last berries.

I’m just sayin’. •

Perspectives I’m Lost

I ’m lost! What a horrible and sometimes helpless realization when you’re in the middle of a trip. Even a GPS can lead you astray. Maybe you’re going in circles or at a dead end. You do not know where you are or how to reach your destination. In my 55 years of driving trucks all over North America, I can assure you I have been lost many times. Sometimes it’s because I wasn’t paying attention. Sometimes I was given bad directions by a wellmeaning but clueless customer who had no clue about the dimensions and limitations of trucks. One memorable night near Garden City, Kansas, as I neared my destination with a load of cattle feed, I followed an outdated GPS onto a gravel road. When that gravel road turned into just a track, I became concerned. Then my GPS told me I was soon to turn right, and I assumed I would now get back onto the right road. But as I completed my turn, I was looking at a field of alfalfa. I was lost at 10 p.m. with only 2.3 miles from my destination, looking at a hayfield.

That experience ended very nicely. I had a very quiet spot to sleep, and a phone call the next morning got me out of my predicament and into the farm to make my delivery. I was saved.

But there is another kind of lost that has the capacity to end in a horrible way.

The Bible speaks over and over again about the dangers of being lost spiritually. It’s the kind of lostness that might come from our own bad choices. or it might come from following the directions of another person who doesn’t have a clue about how to find the way. It’s the kind of lostness that can only be corrected by a Holy GPS--that is God’s Perfect System. Can you see some similarities in being lost physically and being lost spiritually?

From the time Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, mankind has been born with a sin nature. That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 3:23. “For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.”

That’s you and that’s me. That’s all of us. And that lostness ends up in eternal torment. That is not

where God wants us to be, and He never sends anybody there. He does give us options. We have a loving God who provides a way out of our lostness and out of eternal damnation. He sent His only Son Jesus to die for our sins. It was His gift to us.

We can choose to accept that gift, be forgiven for our sins, and enjoy eternal life in Heaven, or we can choose to reject that gift and stay lost and suffer the consequences of that choice.

If we’re smart when we get lost on the road, we can stop and ask for directions to get us back on the right road. When you realize your spiritual lostness in life, you have the option to stop and ask any Christian Resort Ministries chaplain for directions back onto that road to redemption. That’s where you learn, “The peace that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

Nativity Scene Collection on Exhibit at MOSTHistory

T he Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection , a spotlight exhibit displaying 120 nativity scenes, is now on exhibit at the Museum of South Texas History.

Born in 1934 and ordained as a Catholic priest in 1957, Father Raymundo Peña was named bishop in 1976. Upon his passing in September 2021, the Bishop willed his collection of nativity scenes to the Museum of South Texas History and to the Historic Brownsville Museum.

For many years, Bishop Peña displayed the nativity scenes yearround. He considered them not just a seasonal theme, but a reminder of God’s divine love. He enjoyed sharing them with those who visited, using them as a medium through which to express his faith. Inspired visitors often gifted

Cardoza, she was immediately drawn to the nativity scenes.

“I knew Bishop Peña since the 1970s,” she said. “I got to know him through the years, and I knew about these nativity scenes.”

A tireless advocate for immigrants and the poor, Bishop Peña lived by a personal creed that became his motto: “Do everything with love.” With that love, the museum showcases the collection until Sunday, January 8, 2023. The exhibit is included in the regular museum admission fee. For more information on the exhibit, please contact exhibits and collections coordinator Melissa Peña at mjpena@mosthistory.org or at 956-3836911. Visit mosthistory.org/events for the latest museum information.

May all love each other this holiday season. Happy Holidays from the Museum of South Texas History. •
