As Thanksgiving draws near, I’d like to say how thankful we are at Welcome Home RGV to have the opportunity to serve our Winter (and Converted) Texans throughout the year. We love what we do and who we do it for. Every day at the office is a fun one!
We know we are extremely lucky to have jobs that are fun, but equally significant is knowing that the work we do is incredibly important. I can’t imagine what life in South Texas would be like without all of you in it.
On a personal note, I’m also thankful for my incredible team that makes what we do seem easy; and I’ll be the first to say--it isn’t. It’s hard to believe we are now a staff of over 20, who all have a cando attitude and all who are team players who work with the utmost integrity, without ever being asked.
It’s magical, quite frankly. I’m blessed that they go along with my crazy ideas, pushing us to new levels each and every day. They are the reason Welcome Home RGV is what it is today, and I’m forever grateful for all they do, day in and day out.
We’re all one big happy family, and from our family to yours, we wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings, wherever you may be!

Connection Fair
Connection Fair -
Connecting You to the RGV Connecting You to the RGV
decision makers.
D o you ever wonder how your RV park activity directors know all about the best services and activities South Texas has to offer? Here’s a little insight into their super powers: Welcome Home RGV’s Connection Fair.
For over 10 years, Welcome Home RGV has connected area medical care, service providers, attractions, restaurants, and retailers--to name a few--directly with resort and RV park
This year’s event took place over an afternoon in early November at Casa de Amistad in Harlingen with 79 vendors and approximately 150 attendees (park managers and activity directors).
The annual event offers local organizations, businesses, and municipalities a direct contact to RV park and resort communities, just in time for the influx of winter visitors. In turn, parks share gathered information and contacts
with residents, weeks, months, and even years out.
Activity directors like Susan Thomas of Bit-O-Heaven in Donna attend, ready to book speakers and schedule tours. She also collects promotional material, fliers, maps, and business cards. All the information gathered is organized and shared with park residents over the course of a season…and beyond.
We’re just connecting the dots. VOLUME 8 • ISSUE 7 • November 23, 2022 THANK YOU TO OUR 2022-2023 SEASON SPONSORS

Story and photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
“We bring our activity directors and Welcome Wagon committee,” says Thomas. Bit-O-Heaven’s Welcome Wagon creates “welcome” goodie bags with the promotional items for newcomers to the park.
Thomas goes on to list a multitude of things they look for when attending the Connection Fair, from maps to golf-cart maintenance to entertainment.
Tourist attractions are also of interest. Today’s winter visitor doesn’t want to sit at home; they are explorers who enjoy experiences. “We have no problem putting 50 people on a bus to go to the Vipers game,” says Thomas.
Thomas also shares how connecting with all kinds of services is also a focus for attending--where the nearest emergency-care center is located, medical contacts for everything from knee injuries to dental care, and pest control to
pet grooming. “That’s a big one! We’ve got a lot of pets in our park!”
Thomas says.
The Connection Fair is a onestop opportunity to schedule inpark presentations, seminars, and outings, as well as to educate key park personnel about products and service. For local entities, says Kristi Collier, owner of Welcome Home RGV, “This two-hour event is a game changer.”
Previous vendor Kirk Kotylo of Mr. Mobile Home Insurance, has said about the Connection Fair, “Best part for me was the opportunity to meet with all the activity directors and park managers, all in one spot. I was able to confirm appointments that I had already made and fill my calendar with new ones.”
Thomas says she comes to the Fair with this question in mind: “What is a service that I know people need?” From car-wash locations

Thanksgiving Hugs
Thanksgiving is here, and we want y’all to know how very grateful we are for you walking alongside this ministry and giving in so many ways. Thanks to you, we get to experience Thanksgiving…every day!
This year, our Winter Texan friends have continued to mail boxes of hats, blankets, and shawls down here to be added to our Donation Chest. These sweet boxes of gifts always come with a card of encouragement that touches everyone’s heart. And you continue to send financial donations and support to the shop; these donations keep the lights on and the needles going!
Although we’re a small nonprofit, with your gifts and God’s direction, we are able to help thousands around the world get a bit of love in every stitch that’s put together. With our Sorting Day for the end of the year just completed, there are so many gifts of encouragement being sent out. There
will be headbands in Bangladesh, hats in the Appalachians, blankets in Reynosa, and…well…you get the idea. Also, we know you come here for the warm weather, but for those who live here year-round, our “winter” can get pretty cold. Thanks to your lovely, warm gifts, we are also blessed to be able to provide some temporary warmth to our locals who are without housing or who do not have access to a home with heat.
So Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! Give each other a hug from all of us and enjoy your turkey day. And remember, there are so many ways to “stitch it forward.” We would love you to join in. So let’s stay in touch all year. You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.

We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset.

Blind Men Walking
By Stacy McDonald
I witnessed a blind man getting off a city bus yesterday. As he stepped down onto the sidewalk, his long cane surveyed the land in front of him. He moved the cane side to side as he walked up the sidewalk and turned into the parking lot of the grocery store.
He seemed confident, sure of his direction, as he maneuvered around cars and shopping-cart stalls to the front door of the store. I, on the other hand, was filled with apprehension as I watched. I thought to myself, ‘How can he trust that long cane? How terrifying not to see!’ and ‘What if something goes wrong?’
Then my thoughts immediately turned to God Almighty and how this blind man’s walk mirrors so well our walk with Him. God is there to guide us, giving us His Holy Word, the Bible, as our “long cane” to keep us in the right way as we move forward. When we do not rely on this precious gift, we fi nd ourselves walking blindly through life, stumbling over obstacles, going the wrong way, reaching out in the darkness, and grabbing whatever
we can to try and satisfy our need for safety and fulfillment. Then, we suddenly realize we are lost, further from home and our desired destination than when we started out. We had no idea we were going the wrong way or that something had even gone wrong until we had gone so far.
Be a Part of Lakewood RV Resort Christmas for the Children Project
Submitted by Donna Wright, Lakewood resident and event chairperson
A hhh…winter in South Texas is highly anticipated this time of year, and as Winter Texan residents are returning to the Valley for the winter, here at Lakewood RV Resort, that means it’s time to prepare for our 29th Christmas for the Children Project. We are providing Christmas for more than 15 less-fortunate families from a local elementary, where many of our Lakewood RV Resort Winter Texans have spent years mentoring students. This Project started 29 years ago with our Worship Committee.
Our fundraisers for this project have included a Soup for the Needy Luncheon and Bake Sale and a dance. We also have a Quilt Raffle and Wood Carving Raffles. The quilt has been designed by our quilting ladies, and one of our resort woodcarving residents carved items.
Raffle tickets are on sale now, and you need not be present to win. The drawing is December 5.
As chair of this project, let me explain how it works. On the day of the Christmas for the Children party, the families come to our RV resort for lots of fun with Santa and Mrs. Clause and meet our residents. They enjoy cookies, punch, and fellowship and receive their groceries and gifts and a handmade quilt for each child. We receive a warm sense of the season in our hearts, serving God in His work. •
If only we would stop and pick up the “long cane,” the guiding light God has provided us all, and begin to utilize it! If only we would read His Word, learn about the Light and His ways, begin to trust Him and obey, we could be saved and our way made sure all the rest of our days and on into eternity.
I am sure it took much patience, learning, and practice for that blind man to fully trust his guiding long cane. He did not give up on using it-no matter the obstacles that came his way--because he had been assured it was his only way to maneuver safely through life and arrive at his desired destination. He had faith that if he kept at it, he would reach his goal.
Jesus is the Word, the Light, the Way, the Truth, and the Life! The Holy Spirit is our guide to oneness and eternal life with Him. God is loving, long-suffering, and patient toward us as He stands ready to show us the way out of darkness into light, to open our eyes to see we can trust the Lord God Almighty!
He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the Lord continually. ~Leviticus 24:4 KJV

Winter Arrives at IMAS
The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) invites the community to celebrate its upcoming winter festivities. IMAS will be hosting a Biodiversity Festival & Winter Market, its Annual Christmas Tree Forest, as well as winter programs, including the Operation Imagination Winter Camp and an Adult Folk Art Workshop in Basketry.
The Biodiversity Festival will celebrate the incredible variety of life on Earth! Explore the field of biodiversity through hands-on
activities, visit the Smithsonian exhibition Life in One Cubic Foot , engage with community organizations, and shop at the Market at the Museum.
Participating organizations include UTRGV Soil Ecology Lab, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and more. The event will be held at the International Museum of Art & Science December 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., with a special early Members’ Hour from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
This year’s Annual Christmas Tree Forest is celebrating An International Christmas and is organized and supported by the IMAS Guild. This
annual tradition has been a favorite, long-standing exhibit that brings the community together--and the IMAS to life--during the holiday season. Each tree follows an overarching theme and interprets that theme in its own creative and original way. The tradition of the Christmas Tree Forest brings to life the spirit of art, creation, and handmade ornaments and inspires creativity among our youngest visitors through adult organizations and groups. The Annual Christmas Tree Forest will be on display at the IMAS December 3 through December 31. Winter programs this December
include Operation Imagination Winter Camp and Adult Folk Art Workshop in Basketry. Operation Imagination Winter Camp is a three-day camp, December 28 through December 30, that will focus on the Smithsonian exhibition Life in One Cubic Foot, a look into the incredible variety of life on Earth. Registration for the Winter Camp is now open.
The Adult Folk Art Workshop in Basketry will explore the beautiful art of Mexican basketry and its roots in indigenous practices. In this Workshop, participants will get a deeper look into the Mexican basketry in the permanent collection as they create their own functional bowl from reeds. This Workshop will be held December 10 from 2-4 p.m. and will be taught by Selena Garza. The cost is $15 per participant ($10 for IMAS Members).
Visitors can also take on the Gingerbread House Workshop building challenge December 9, 10, 11, and 17. This workshop is $10 ($5 for IMAS Members).
Learn more about workshops at the IMAS by visiting theimasonline.org/ explore-imas. •

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
By Bill Ward Walking Through Minefields
Today’s Wisdom: It is the difference between men and women, not the sameness, that creates the tension and the delight. ~Edward Abbey
The other day, my wife and I were getting ready to go out for the evening. I was dressed and waiting by the door when she came into the room and asked, “How is this outfit?”
Not thinking clearly, and in the mode of a pass-fail option, I replied, “Fine.” Bad mistake! Her next question was, “Not good?”
One of the things I have learned in life, and I suspect many other men have, too, is that we operate on a yesor-no level. It’s OK or it’s not OK. It’s fine or it’s not fine. We are generally not in tune to the multiple levels of the female mind.
I had to talk my wife out of going back and changing in a quest to reach “good,” a state the same as fine in my mind.
I sometimes wonder if men just operate on a simpler level than women. Research has shown that women use both sides of their brains while men use just one side for each task. That makes women better at some things, like sensing emotional messages and reading facial expressions. They learn new
languages easier, spell better, and have better penmanship. They also hear better than men, which is a whole other column.
We men have our own set of things at which we are better. We are better coordinated, have better spatial recognition, and have a better sense of perspective. We also have a better sense of direction. None of the things on our list help us understand the female mind.
That comment the other night was grouped right in there with, “You’re wearing that?” and “When are you planning to…? (Fill in the blank.) There is a right answer, but my mind doesn’t always key in on it quickly. My answer is often preceded by the word “ummmm,” buying time while the gears in my brain struggle to come up with the (obvious to her) correct answer.
After many years together, my wife and I know each other pretty well. I find our occasional conversations like that evening to be funny, a reflection of the interesting dynamics at play in any marriage. We get along just fine, as do most of the older couples I know. Most of us have figured it out by now, or else we wouldn’t have gotten this far. But still, one must be careful when walking through minefields. Don’t ask me when I plan to wash the car.
I’m just sayin’.

awaii, our own American paradise, teaming with flora, fauna, and…food! Most of the meals on the islands are, of course, tropical in nature--lots of fresh fruits, veggies, seafood, and more. Kalua Pig is a traditional dish cooked in an underground oven (called an imu) for hours and hours. This recipe is made in the oven; no need to dig up your yard!
Oven Kalua Pig
2 tablespoons coarse salt
1 slice fresh ginger, half-inch, crushed ¼ cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon liquid smoke 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 pork butt, 4-5 pounds, bone in 2 large cloves garlic, crushed Banana leaves*
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Mix together the salt, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, ginger, and liquid smoke. Place the meat in a zip-lock plastic bag and cover with the marinade. Let stand for an hour. Place a layer of banana leaves in a large roaster. Remove the roast
from the marinade and place on the leaves. Bring them up around the meat, totally enclosing it. Use as many leaves as needed to make a closed package. If using corn husks, you might want to tie with some butcher’s string to keep them in place around the roast.
Bake the roast for 4-5 hours. Unwrap, cool so you can work with it, and then shred the pork. Serves 8-10.
* You really can find banana leaves in larger supermarkets or specialty stores, but just in case, you can use reconstituted corn husks which are plentiful in Texas. Just make sure you have enough to encase the roast completely, with two layers, if necessary, of the softened leaves.
