Touring South Texas Touring South Texas

One thing I know about Winter Texans is that you like to go,go,go--and almost always in a group! Knowing that, I’ve dreamed of offering bus tours for years and am over-the-top excited to see that dream finally become a reality. We launched Tours by Welcome Home early last year with the intention of starting our first tours last fall. When we talked about it with our activity directors in April, they all said, “But we have people who want to go now!”

So over the course of the summer, we not only crafted an amazing tour schedule for this season, we also had fun carting our Converted Texans around!

We have a number of upcoming tours, and while singles are always welcome on any of our tours, we have a few lined up specifically for singles, including a Galentine’s getaway to Corpus Christi!

There’s so much to see and do this season, and I would like to personally invite you to join us as we tour South Texas and beyond. We’d love to have you join us.

We’re just connecting the dots… •

“It’s real quality and a good time,” says Annette Schulz, sharing her take on Tours by Welcome Home. That’s the goal--in a nutshell--for tour planner Sarah Denzer.

“This is not a drop-you-off-andyou’re-on-your-own operation,” says Denzer. There is thought and planning put into each excursion (i.e. there’s something for everyone, with a focus on ease for the tourist).

Building on the relationships and connections established over the last decade and a half, Welcome Home RGV added a Group Tour Division

in 2022. Tours by Welcome Home literally hit the road running, offering day trips to local attractions, like Behind the Scenes at Gladys Porter Zoo, the Gelman Stained Glass Museum, and South Padre Island’s Lighted Boat Parade. Not long after, expanding further into South Texas, including overnight trips.

“The first tour I went on was so well organized, and entertaining.” says Schulz. So much so, Schulz subsequently packed her calendar with more tours.

Tours by Welcome Home does all the background work, planning and preparing with research and site

visits, taking special care to craft a fun outing.

After the first stop on a recent two-day Corpus Christi tour, Denzer says travelers were already asking what Tours by Welcome Home had in store for the future, even offering suggestions spanning beyond South Texas.

At least for now, the tours span the local region, including Bonita Flats Farm & Winery (with a bonus stop at the new South Texas Ecotourism Center), Delta Lake Hotel Ruins and

South Texas Motorcycle Museum, and the legendary King Ranch with two upcoming dates.

The customized tours are a great way to learn about the region, says Schulz, which she really enjoys and appreciates. “I think we should get to know more about the area if we’re going to be here, even if only for a few months.”

And, Schulz shares, they’re a great way to meet new friends. She credits Denzer’s enthusiasm for making even the motorcoach ride fun.

There are little nuances that make a Tour by Welcome Home extra special for customers, like Col-Air hand fans, Thurmond Eye Associates sunglasses, and great food. “Sarah seems to always line up good food,” shares Schulz.

Overnight tour groups receive swag bags, which also include items like the Thurmond Eye Associates sunglasses. Denzer reports responses to the goodies included, “Oh my gosh, are you kidding?” and “Thurmond is sponsoring? They’re my eye doctor!”

But, there’s one tiny item especially coveted by tour goers. Tours by Welcome Home provides a customized enamel pin for each tour--a wine glass for Bonita Flats and an alpaca for Alpaquita Ranch-to add to the signature orange lanyard.

Denzer says every trip is unique, and there’s something for everyone, including regional history, nature, and animal encounters. (Not to mention extra-special treatment, like a private lunch on the fantail of the U.S.S. Lexington, which, Schulz says was fantastic!)

The feedback was unanimous after the Corpus Christi trip. Customers gave Tours by Welcome Home a 5 out of 5 overall, including the rating for “value.”

“The price is so reasonable,” says Schulz. “To have someone else do the driving and entertainment, it’s like a mini vacation.”

Welcome Home takes care of the details and garners special treatment to provide a true VIP experience. “You’re in good hands with us; we make it super easy,” says Denzer. “All you have to do is get on the bus!” •

Love in Every Stitch

H ey, Y’all! It’s Yarn Tasting Week, and we hope you’ll come over for a little yarn fun! We’ve done a little rearranging, and for those who haven’t popped over yet, we thought we’d give you a little peek at the heart of The Lamb’s Loom. The first thing you see when you come in our front door is our Donation Chest. It’s the reason we are here. This is where everyone places their handmade creations that are then gathered up and sent out to serve the needs of so many around the world. The Donation Chest has its own map, showing the destination points all around the globe. Our chest is not just a destination; it is the beginning of hugging the world, one stitch at a time.

This is the first stopping point for all the handmade items you bring in. From here, they are counted and sorted and bagged up, ready to be sent off to just the right place during the year. We learned years ago not to worry about how many hats or blankets are collected. Everyone gets the blessing of making, and God is in charge of distribution. That blanket that gets put in the chest already has a home waiting to be warmed. Thousands of

hats will go out and warm people to their soul. Shawls, toys, and scarves will be gifts of joy to their recipients. As things are brought in for donation, we pray for the hands that made the item and for those receiving the gift, always trusting that everything made has a home ready to receive it.

Currently, we serve over 20 different mission groups around the world as they serve the needs of so many: orphanages, the homeless, grief counselors, and pregnancy centers, to name a few. And now we collect and

Amputation Prevention

distribute knitted knockers (breast prosthetics). We know that in every bag sent out, encouragement and joy are being delivered. That is what our Donation Chest is all about…sending out love in every stitch.

We hope you will join in this journey with us. Come by and “meet” the Donation Chest and enjoy a few stories of hope. The world needs that now more than ever!

You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of

course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.

The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.

We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

Answered Prayer Leads to Magical Day at Buckner Family Hope Center

S aturday, December 17, looked anything but happy and bright as volunteers from Mission West Church and Mission West Resort RV Park arrived at the Buckner Family Hope Center (FHC) in Penitas for their annual Christmas Toy Distribution. It was cold outside. The sky was gloomy and dark, with clouds that seemed determined to continue spraying a light, consistent drizzle on everything in their path.

The volunteers met with the Buckner FHC staff to go over the morning’s itinerary, which had to be repeatedly revised as the weather kept changing. Regardless, Santa Claus managed to make it in time for the meeting--all the way from the North Pole. The meeting closed with a beautiful prayer, in faith that God would bless the event, along with the families being served, the FHC staff, and the Mission West volunteers.

Everyone’s spirits began to lift as they stepped into their assigned roles for the day and Santa took his seat under the Christmas-photo backdrop. Amazingly, the drizzle came to an end, and the once blustery wind was all but calmed as, one by one, vehicles began making their way into the parking lot. The choice was given to each family to stay in their vehicles and have their gifts and treats brought out to them or to park and come inside. The vast majority of the families were so excited that they opted to park and come inside

the FHC so the children could visit with Santa, get their picture taken with him, and enjoy delicious hot chocolate and pan dulce. Each child that came through was blessed with a beautifully wrapped gift selected especially for him or her by Santa’s elves.

The Mission West volunteers got to experience the Christmas joy of helping the FHC staff love on and bless over 60 families that morning. What once seemed like a dreary, dreadful day quickly became a magical day that no one there will soon forget.

The Buckner Family Hope Center at Penitas is part of Buckner International, an international

Eastgate Reverse Calendar 2022

T

he community of Eastgate RV and Mobile Home Park in Harlingen collected 55 bags of food for Child Protective Services and the food pantry in 24 days using the Reverse Advent Calendar.

Tears of happiness and joy were shed as Joanna Garcia, CPS program director, Adela Gonzalez caseworker, Edgar Quintanilla, Yesenia Guerrero, and staff came to pick up the bags. Pastor Hector Perez of The Father’s House in Harlingen also arrived to give a beautiful blessing over the food as we all gathered around. His parish donated mittens gloves, and hats. An Eastgate resident, Steve Fawley, made and gave a number of blankets. Another resident, Terry Romanchuk, made little ornaments from paracord. The Christmas spirit of giving was dancing in the air as everyone carried bags weighing an average of 26 lbs. outside to the four cars. Soon, almost 1,500 lbs. of food would be delivered to so many deserving families so they would have food for Christmas. So how did this all begin?

Last summer, Paula and Dean Granger, Winter Texans from Michigan, saw a post on Facebook about the Reverse Advent Calendar. Each day was assigned a food item that a person would purchase and put in a bag for giving. At the end of 24 days, that person would have a large variety of food items for several meals. Paula, along with Nancy Banks, put the project into motion. Paula contacted Adela Gonzalez of Child Protective Services. They hoped for 20 bags…but it kept growing. It outgrew Paula's bedroom and spread into Nancy's bedroom and then into her living room. The generosity of Eastgate residents brought them to tears. There was not only an outpouring of food but also money. Many bought more than one bag. All money collected was spent to fi ll bags and make more. When all was done, they had made 55 bags filled with almost $30 of food in each, weighing 26 lbs. The cost of food given was totaled around $1,650. Another anonymous resident bought a small canned ham for each bag. Some of their stories brought more tears to their eyes.

The day before, 11 bags were delivered by Paula, Nancy, and Cindy England, a representative of the food pantry and an Eastgate resident. Eleven homeless families had just received their first homes. One had

just moved from a tent to a room he was able to rent for $50. As they approached another family, the little boy took the blanket and was so happy and wrapped the blanket around himself. That family had no heat. At the food pantry, they met another family--Mom and Dad and two small children. They had fled their homeland of Ukraine because of the war. Somehow, they had made it to the United States. They were connected to a wonderful lady from Raymondville who offered them a house to live in and make it their home. They could not speak English, but were able to communicate through a language app on their phone. So many wonderful stories of sadness but also love, giving, and sharing.

Eastgate, you rock! Your generosity has touched so many lives this Christmas season. •

Do You Know It’s Christmas?

Residents of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen routinely take the following words of the popular Christmas song, Do You Know It’s Christmas, to heart, especially during the holidays: And in our world of plenty We can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world At Christmas time.

We realize how fortunate we are and wanted to help make the holidays a little happier and brighter for others. Some of the activities we have been up to:

Monthly, ladies from the Park get together to create crafts for themselves and to give as gifts. During November, they got together an additional time and made over 90 pine cone Christmas gnomes. The gnomes were delivered to residents at Valley View Senior Center in Harlingen, when a group of ladies went to spread holiday cheer and sing Christmas carols for residents and staff, something the ladies have been doing for several years.

Everyone knows life can be difficult and stressful at times, and these times can be especially hard on children. For the past few

months, Palm Gardens residents have been collecting teddy bears.

A total of 130 teddy bears were collected and donated to the Harlingen Police Department. As situations warrant, officers give the teddy bears to children. And who doesn’t feel a little better when hugging a teddy bear? We’ve already

started collecting teddy bears to donate this spring.

Growing up, many of us enjoyed the excitement of opening up the little doors on an Advent Calendar daily and finding some candy or a small toy. This year, residents took part in a Reverse Advent Calendar. Each day, they would add a grocery item

to a box (or laundry basket). The groceries were then given to people in need. This year, we collected 23 baskets of groceries that were given to the elderly who are in need in the St. Theresa Parish in San Benito. Hopefully these activities help brightened the holidays for others. We know they did for us! •

Qigong: Taking Charge of Your Health and Well-Being

T he ancient art of Qigong (pronounced chee-guhng) has been making a big impact on many residents of Palm Resaca Park in Brownsville. The 4000-year-old Chinese discipline is more than a physical exercise. It is a mind, body, and spiritual practice that encompasses posture, movement, meditation, breathing, and some martial-arts training. One of the main differences between Tai Chi and Qigong is that Tai Chi is meditation in movement, whereas Qigong involves concentrating on one movement only, repeating it up to 39 times.

Some studies have suggested that Qigong can benefit people suffering from a wide array of health conditions, including some chronic diseases. When Ontario’s Sue McDonald read a book by Dr. Robert Rogers, PhD, from Parkinson’s Recovery, she was quite impressed with his discoveries. His findings suggested Qigong exercises could reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and improve the body functions of PD patients in both the mild and moderate stages.

Park resident Bill Robert suffered from significant chronic injuries in the back and hands.

“It would hurt, and I would go into spasms,” said Bill. Yoga helped him relieve the spasms, but his back was still sore. After practicing the torque exercises in Qigong (turn, twist, and go up and down) for a few months, his back didn’t hurt anymore. “It hurt for over 40 years, and now the pain is gone,” declared Bill joyfully. “I can even pick up the paper in my driveway.”

Bill also had arthritis in his thumbs and wrists. He began doing the tapping exercises, which involves

hitting the acupuncture points on the body. “I always felt silly doing these exercises,” he confessed. He would perform this tapping routine for 30 seconds each morning, and now the pain is gone. He called it a noninvasive experience. You don’t need surgery or medicine. “You just do the exercises, and your body uses the energy from your own system to heal itself,” he proclaimed.

There are five elements to Qigong-wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements affect the flow of energy in our bodies. How these elements affect the body’s energy flow is central to ancient Chinese medicines and Qigong exercises.

Qigong is especially beneficial for seniors because it uses the body as weight and helps strengthen muscles. Many seniors are worried about muscle loss as they age. Qigong helps to preserve muscles from atrophying or breaking down. According to the Cleveland Clinic,

Qigong can reduce symptoms of depression, fight chronic fatigue and mood disturbances, boost your immune system, and increase your mental functioning.

Brownsville’s Gilda Gomez-Lafarga is the instructor for the large group class at Palm Resaca, which she conducts twice a week for an hour. Ages range from 50-year-olds to those in their 80s. The room lights are dimmed, soft meditative music is played, and participants are encouraged to stay in the moment and concentrate fully on the exercises while they listen to the soft, calming voice of the instructor. Gilda explains that Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that consists of breathing, meditation, and slow movements. “Qi” relates to vital life force and “gong” means cultivation. The Qigong practice controls the flow of energy that exists within us.

The benefits are overall well-being, lowering the risk of chronic disease,

improving health and focus, and, possibly, healing. As each exercise is being performed, Gilda explains how it affects a specific part of the body.

Gilda has also been working with AARP, the Carlotta K. Petrina Cultural Center, the Metanoia Wellness Center, and Revival of Cultural Arts. When Palm Resaca Park resident Shelley Repka Willard met Gilda at the Petrina Center, she realized Gilda was a genuine, authentic, kind person. “She had a beautiful spirit about her, “declared Shelley. In 2019, Shelley convinced Gilda to come to Palm Resaca Park. Gilda has had a tremendous impact on residents taking her classes. Shelley has noticed a shift in the participants’ energy and wellbeing and improvement in strength, flexibility and mobility.

Keep in mind that Qigong is not an overnight fix. Like any exercise, you need to master it to get the full benefits from it. •

From Tide to Table on South Padre Island

N ational Cook Your Catch Day is celebrated January 23, but you don’t need to wait for the holiday to participate. You can come and fish-up your dinner any time of the year. South Padre Island has always been a popular fishing hub, offering bay and deep-sea fishing. If you’re looking for an inexpensive fishing trip, check out one of the local boating companies, as they provide public fishing trips; anybody can board. These fishing trips are four hours long, with the option of either an

early morning start or a trip in the late afternoon. They offer various services, such as fishing equipment rentals, cleaning catches, and concessions.

If you’re looking for a private fishing expedition, you can rent a private charter with the companies or look for a private fishing captain. That way, you

and your group can relax and fish at your own pace. Plenty of boat ramps and storage services are available if you plan to bring your boat, and if you need any additional equipment, there are a variety of fishing shops to visit. After a successful trip, you can take your catch to one of our local eateries so they can cook it to your liking. Seafood is a staple on South Padre Island, and our cooks are experts at preparing specialty dishes. Whether you want it blackened, grilled, or fried, it’ll be delicious. T

oday’s Wisdom: Grey hair is a crown of splendor. It is attained by a righteous life. ~King Solomon

I was recently just sitting down to watch our online church service. As I was doing so, I noticed a flash of color passing by on the road in front our house. I looked out and saw a young lady in a jogging suit passing by, ponytail bobbing and legs pumping.

This gal was fairly young and obviously in good shape, given the speed she was moving and the toned body she was displaying. She also looked totally out of place because I live in a retirement community much of each year. No one who lives there looks like that.

Waiting for the church service to start, my mind pondered what I had just seen. She was lucky. She had a good body, good heart, good lungs, and good joints.

She could do what none of the residents here could do. She had energy, she had gumption, and given the mere fact that she was in our community, she obviously had family to visit.

Then the service started, and the pastor began talking about the gift of grey hair. Grey hair? A gift? He put my mind into a whole different perspective. I had none of the attributes of the young lady, but I certainly had grey hair.

She had a future, but I have a past. She had potential but I have accomplishment. She had dreams but I have pride. She had knowledge, but I have wisdom. She had blond hair, but mine is grey.

I began to wonder which of us is the most blessed. Would I trade places with her if that was possible? Maybe, but I don’t feel a need to. I don’t feel the need because I am content with what I have. My life has been blessed with all the things that make life good. I hope one day she can say that, too.

One of the things I have learned is that coveting what we don’t have is useless. Celebrating what we do have with thanksgiving is what makes life good, regardless of our individual

circumstances. The mere fact that I have lived a long, good life I view as a gift. I choose to celebrate, grey hair and all.

I’m just sayin’. •

Llano Grande Quilt Bee Busy with Community Service Projects

Quilt Show at Llano Grande January 31

The Llano Grande quilters are hard at work making baby blankets, lap quilts, and veteran and service quilts. Our members gather for sewing days twice a week to work on various projects.

The baby blankets are usually a joint effort of several members. First, a pattern is created. Then the fabric is cut and sewn to make the quilt top. Next we add batting and backing. Then it goes to the long-arm machine for quilting. The last step is binding the edges of the quilt. We have many members who donate their time and skills to support our communityservice projects.

This season, we have already distributed over 60 baby blankets to the Child Protective Services Rainbow Rooms. There are dozens more blankets in various stages being created for the kids.

Another project currently in the works consists of 12 veterans’ quilts

to honor and thank members of the armed forces in our community. We started planning weeks ago, and members are now creating a variety of quilts to include all branches of the military. After these are completed, we want to start on service quilts for first responders.

Please visit our communityservice booth at the quilt show to see pictures and samples of the projects we are working on. The Mercedes Mineral Matrix Quilt Show will be at the Llano Event Center at 2215 East West Blvd. in Mercedes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31. •

IMAS Accepted Into NSF-Funded National Cohort “Cambio”

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen has joined Cambio, a year-long professionaldevelopment cohort, to build capacity for authentic and sustained collaborations with its community.

Cambio’s vision centers on encouraging organizations to shift their practices at all levels by examining the cultural dimensions and intersections of Hispanic/Latinx audiences, STEM, and organizational change. Believing that leaders reside at all levels within organizations, the program helps museum practitioners to explore how they might spark change in their role as individuals, within organizations and in relationship with communities.

The Cambio experience focuses on incremental change in organizational practice, building on strengths and improving what they do well, with a goal of long-term, transformational change that includes examining assumptions and changing structures toward institutionwide change. The IMAS Cambio team participates in monthly virtual meetings with the other museums in their cohort: The New York Hall of Science, Queens Zoo-Wildlife Conservation Society, The

Children’s Museum Tucson (AZ), and The Tech Interactive in San Jose, CA.

Cambio is a National-ScienceFoundation-funded program for informal learning institutions—zoos, children’s museums, science centers, and other similar organizations— across the United States. It’s built on the premise that by developing cultural competence specific to Hispanic/ Latinx communities and STEM— the fields known collectively as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—coupled with intentional changes in practice, museums can increase accessibility for and inclusion of their Hispanic/Latinx communities, cultures, and audiences.

Cambio is made possible through the generous support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is a collaboration between the Exploratorium and CCLI (Cultural Competence Learning Institute). This material is based upon work supported by NSF under grant 1906595. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of NSF. •

Retired Golf Pro Shares Pointers at La Floresta

“There are two types of motion in the down swing: lateral and rotational,” said Casey Tippet, retired golf pro and resident of La Floresta RV Park in Mercedes. “They are the key to solid ball contact.” Casey, from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, taught golf for 35 years. He held a golf clinic recently at La Floresta, where he shared his knowledge and skills with face angle, grips, the swing, and more.

Casey talked about the importance of the “tools,” which include your golf balls, woods, and irons. “If you use the tools as they were meant to be used, they work.” He emphasized the need for proper set up: your posture, spine angle, and ball position. He demonstrated how to affect the length and width of your swing path. He explained exactly how the swing should work and easy ways to get to that point. “Don’t use your hands and arms in the swing; use your body. Turn your chest to

the sky; the spine angle is one of the key things,” he said. “Instead of keeping your head down, keep your spine down.” He added, “The angle of the club is most important as it affects distance and direction. Speed equals distance…and all this happens in about one-tenth of a second.” He also explained how putting was similar to chipping and to aim with your shoulder.

At the conclusion, Casey said, “It sounds pretty complicated. Lot to think about. Gotta practice it.”

As the La Floresta Golf Scramble began the next day, many of the tips and tricks shared by Casey were on the minds of many as the golfers teed off. However, in the Rio Grande Valley, we are at the mercy of the wind and terrain. And as we age, we don’t have the flexibility and strength we used to have, but we still enjoy playing the game!

Casey’s clinic was very informative and should help with accuracy and distance with golfers at La Floresta. •

Perspectives God Opens Doors

T here is a saying that, although cute, it sometimes bothers me. That saying is, “When God closes a door, He opens a window.” I was standing by my shop door one day, and my attention was drawn to a fly repeatedly bumping into the window of my door. I watched as this continued for several minutes. I wondered if the fly could see the things outside and if it was simply trying to get to that area.

I thought, “I’ll help him out,” so I opened the door. Even with the door open, the fly continued to try to go through the window. I even tried some intervention on the fly’s behalf. I stepped through the open door I had provided for the fly, but it did no good. The fly continued head-butting my window. I then tried some discipline by trying to shoo the fly out the door, all to no avail. The fl y would fl y around my hand and bump the window. The open door was totally available to the fly, but it wanted an open window.

This set me to wondering…God opens doors and closes doors at His

own bidding. How many times have I, or have we, refused the open door while hoping for an open window?

We have many opportunities to share God’s word in our everyday life. We have many opportunities to witness in our daily life. There is opportunity after opportunity to accomplish the call of God in our ministry to others. The doors of opportunity are open.

Are you taking advantage of those open-door opportunities, or are you looking for an open window?

There are people who need to hear just the words you have to share. There are people who will only read the scripture you hand them.

I would encourage you, as you go through your day, to stop looking for a window to climb through and simply walk through the door God has so graciously opened before you. We pray for the opportunity to share God’s love with people, but when God provides us the person to witness to, we sometimes cower in fear, wondering what to say or what to do. If we pray, God answers.

And when God sends someone to you and He then, through the

prompting of the Holy Spirit, nudges you to speak to that person, He has already prepared that person to hear what you have to say. Don’t look for a window when God has given you a door. They don’t need theology or denomination; what the person needs is the word God has given you to speak into his or her life.

We ask for opportunities to place God’s word and for opportunities to witness. Let’s not be surprised when that opportunity is in the United States, in Texas, in your town, at your job, and among your friends. God not only opens doors into new countries, He opens doors right here, right where you are. Be faithful. Don’t look for a window when God has given you a door. Walk boldly through it into the opportunity God has waiting for you.

By the way, the fly eventually flew freely through the open door into what he could only see through the window.

Look for the open door!

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Virginia

This is a rich, decadent dessert with minimal effort because it uses a ready-made, refrigerated, rolled pie crust. Of course, if you are a fan of your own flaky homemade crust, use that instead. The time spent will be a labor of love!

Chocolate Walnut Tart Pastry for a single-crust 9-inch pie

1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

3 large eggs, slightly beaten ¾ cup dark corn syrup ½ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup real butter, melted 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Press the pastry onto the bottom and up the sides of an ungreased, fluted, 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Trim the edges even with the top of the pan. Sprinkle the walnuts and chocolate chips into the crust evenly. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients, mixing well. Pour this into the crust over the nuts and chocolate chips.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool completely. Serve with rich vanilla ice cream or a dollop of real whipped cream...not “C’Whip”! Refrigerate leftovers. •

Conchas are a common, tasty treat found in most local bakeries alongside other sweet breads (also known as pan dulce). The crunchy topping is typically pink, white, or chocolate brown. This particular batch was customized for the 15th Anniversary Open House event for Welcome Home RGV. •
