Welcome Home RGV Hosts Welcome Home RGV Hosts Homecoming Dances Homecoming Dances hello
W elcome Home! Five years ago, one of my Winter Texan friends said she wished there were more local events for Winter Texans earlier in the season. It seems like January and February are jam-packed with things to do, and there is no rest for the weary. I listened, and our Winter Texan Homecoming was born! The event is simple. We have live music, camaraderie, and door prizes, but we also crown a king and queen who get nothing more than bragging rights for the duration of the season.
The criteria for the king and queen are simple: You have to have the best moves on the dance floor and you have to spend the majority of the time showing off your stuff! The decision isn’t always an easy one to make, and we love having fun with our guests.
If there is an idea you have, please be sure to let us know! We are in the business of making your time in South Texas the best it can be…and we’re always game for throwing a party!

Celebrating the 2022-23 Winter Texan season
T he 5th Annual Homecoming Dance took place in the ballroom of the Mission Event Center December 6. Approximately 200 people attended, initially greeted by the signature orange carpet. rolled out for photo ops.
A large dance floor was positioned in the center of the ballroom. It was often filled, as Curt James set a fun tone, singing crowd pleasers like “Elvira” and “Good-Hearted Woman.”
Vic and Bonnie Hari of Winter Green Estates in Mission hardly
left the dance floor, coming up with dances that fit each song, including two-stepping to James’ rendition of “Mony Mony” by Billy Idol.
The Haris are always dancing. It’s been a central theme in their 55-year marriage. “We’d be on the dance floor no matter where we’re at,” said Bonnie.
The couple taught county dancing in Illinois for about 20 years and began spending winters in the Valley…well, Bonnie says, because they love to dance.
At Winter Green Estates, they teach private lessons four times a week and group sessions once a week, and they attend dances themselves three times a week.
“We’re dancing most of the time,” shared Bonnie. So it comes as no surprise--except to Vic, who said he was surprised--when the couple was crowned king and queen of the

Homecoming Dance in Mission. The qualifying criterion: active on the dance floor.
The Haris, along with dozens of other dancers, kept shimmying, twirling, and two-stepping until James sang his final song.
Later that same week, down in Port Isabel, the second dance took place at the Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center.
“We were blown away with the attendance,” said Welcome Home RGV owner, Kristi Collier. About 100 people turned out for the inaugural event in Cameron County.
Ron and Karen Henderson of Port Isabel Park Center stood out on the dance floor at the second
event, taking the king and queen crowns, one of raffia flowers and the other a sombrero. Karen beamed with a huge smile and Ron looked surprised as their photo was snapped, post-coronation.
Of the first event of its kind in Port Isabel, Collier said, “We walked away not only with new friends but also with a number of ideas for future events.”
Both events commemorated the arrival of the Valley’s beloved Winter Texans to their winter home. “We want to give those who come early something special,” shared Collier, “and those late arrivals something to think about for next year.” •

They have had the honor of being the opening act for 38Special and sharing venues with some other great musicians. Mezzy now prefers to focus on country music, but he still throws in some variety.

Christmas Hugs for All
C an you believe Christmas is only a few days away? Well, during this holiday season, we want to send each of y’all a BIG Lamb’s Loom hug of thanks! We truly thank the Lord for each and every one of you who continues to come alongside of us and contribute to this mission to love and encourage others with handmade, “huggable” items and to help us spread the gift of giving.
The Lamb’s Loom’s Donation Chest has overflowed weekly this year, and we are so very grateful. This gift of giving shines, not only at Christmas time but all year, as everyone adds to the chest. As we sort through everything and get ready to send things off, we love to see all of the lovely items that have been gifted. And although our distribution of items goes on all year, during the holidays, it’s extra special.
Some of the mission groups we serve have special requests because of who they serve. At Christmas last year, for Tim’s Coats, we provided over 700 hats. During the year, pregnancy centers request baby booties and layettes. Those who serve the homeless need blankets and scarves to help fend off the chill every night. Prayer shawls come in beautiful patterns. What
makes a shawl a “prayer shawl” is its size and comfort. When we sort out for the mission groups that request prayer shawls, there’s a certain thing we are looking for in them. You can feel that hug in the size of the shawl and in the gentle fiber that was used; that’s the one! The Lamb’s Loom prayer shawls sent around the world are delivering hugs and prayers for the world, one stitch at a time.
Did we mention hugs, because that’s just what’s going on. There’s nothing magical about a hat or particular about a pattern for a blanket that makes these items special. A shawl hugs the receiver and reminds them they’re not alone. A blanket warms a family on a cold night. A hat tops a child’s head with joy. And why? We know that there’s
“love in every stitch,” and that’s something that’s needed in this world, today more than ever.
So as gifts are exchanged this year with family and friends, we want to say thank you! Thank you to each and every one who gives so generously to keep things going around here. It is such a blessing to stitch and serve with you all. Merry Christmas!
For the rest of the year, when y’all aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
For the Christmas holiday, we are closed December 24 through January 3. We will re-open January 4 with our normal hours of Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

South Padre Island: The Birding Hub of South Texas
Eco-tourism plays a vital role in attracting visitors to South Padre Island. One of our major eco-tourism centers is the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary. Their facility is the prime hub for birdwatching in South Texas. The facility is home to 43 acres of wetlands, composed of freshwater and saltwater marshes. The saltwater comes in from Laguna Madre Bay, and the freshwater is provided by the water treatment plant adjacent to the Birding Center.
This unique combination of ecosystems attracts over 300 species of birds to South Padre Island. The facility offers a boardwalk that stretches through the wetlands, offering five bird blinds on the route. These blinds are placed at prime feeding spots to get the best views possible. This is the best place for birding enthusiasts to visit while in Texas. You are welcome to bring your cameras and equipment, but they also offer binoculars for casual birdwatchers. Their main
building offers a variety of tours and presentations that provide insight into the natural environment South Padre Island has to offer. To finish your visit, check out their five-story viewing tour, providing a full view of the wetlands.

Mission West Resort Holds Holiday Food Drive
The holiday season is that time of year when we all like to go above and beyond to help our neighbors in need. When Pastor Mark McDonald and his wife, Stacy, of Christian Resort Ministries and Mission West Church, located inside of beautiful Mission West Resort RV Park in Palmview, spearheaded and kicked off the 2022 Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Food Bank RGV, they quickly found
out just how true that is.
As soon as they released word that the food drive was underway November 13, food began stacking up on the designated table in the Park’s large hall. As the days passed, more and more food appeared, and generous financial gifts were collected. Residents throughout the Park rallied together to help provide a delicious variety of foods for
individuals and families in need this holiday season.
It seems God knew exactly the perfect amount of food that needed to be collected at Mission West because by the time the food drive came to an end December 11, so much food had been collected that Pastor Mark’s car was filled to capacity. Most of the folks at Mission West may be Winter Texans, but with each good cause
that is put before them, they keep proving they have BIG, Texas-sized hearts.
The community is invited to join this great group of people at their weekly non-denominational church service, located in the large hall at 511 E. Loop 374 in Palmview, Sundays at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Pastor Mark at mrmcdonald41@yahoo.com. •

The Whole World is a Garden at IMAS
T he International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is pleased to announce the exhibition The Whole World is a Garden by Mónica Chang will open January 14, 2023, and run through April 30, 2023.
The Whole World is Garden by Mónica Chang explores a simplistic idea easily overlooked on countless occasions: becoming one with nature and all the surrounding environment is essential to enjoy life at its fullest.
Chang takes inspiration from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an Indian humanitarian and spiritual leader frequently referred to as “Sri Sri” (sh-ree shree), who founded the Art of Living Foundation in 1981, a volunteerbased NGO (non-governmental organization) providing social support to the people. It is an understated, yet well-recognized, fact that happiness cannot be achieved by attempting to fulfill it with materialistic things but by surrounding oneself with nature and people. She quotes Sri Sri by commenting, “The day you realize that the whole world is your house--the sky your roof, the earth your floor, and that
each tree is part of your garden--then, you will truly be at home.” Such words were the foundation for The Whole World is a Garden.
Nearly composed of 39 livening and picturesque paintings, this exhibition is prepared to awaken a significant connection with its viewers in their raw experience, denoting peace and liveliness. Chang’s soft but colorful
strokes depict sceneries with a wide range of flowers and other elements of nature, like strong, colorful sunny or night skies, ponds, hummingbirds, and butterflies. The paintings come together to make her memories, feelings, and dreams become history through art. The integrated feminine figures in floral mosaics, along with gold and glimmer touches, give

A Humble Hug Goes a Long Way
By Edna Ziegler
I t’s one of my favorite television commercials. Mom has just taken fresh, hot, chocolate chip cookies from the oven. As she is moving them to a cooling rack, her teenage son quickly enters the kitchen, grabs a cookie without a word, and quickly leaves the scene. But then…he returns. Once again, without a word, he gives her a quick hug and is off again. I’m thinking he may have even grabbed another cookie. This simple act--the hug, not the grabbing of the extra cookie--conjures up possible statements of thankfulness in my mind. “Mom, you’re the best; I appreciate you. I love you so much.”
Perhaps it’s because the commercial reminds me of bygone years of my own kids snatching those homemade cookies, or whatever else I may be preparing at the stove, that tugs at my heart. Or perhaps it is this simple truth: one little action of gratitude speaks louder than a rote “thank you.”
It’s good to teach our children and grandchildren manners—please and thank you--and you always hope, as a parent, they are internalizing them and then utilizing them at the proper times. But it does a mother/ grandmother’s heart good when there’s an unexpected thank you, even without words--perhaps a hug, a dandelion, or their own version of a crayon-colored Picasso.
I wonder if my actions display thankfulness to my heavenly Father as my once-small children’s did or my now beautiful grandchildren do. Do I express my heart adequately enough to Him, not only through psalms and spiritual songs but with simple acts of gratitude? In essence, do I worship Him in a way that says, “I so appreciate you”?
Romans 12:1 reads, “By the mercies of God, give yourself as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.” In essence, Paul is saying, “Because of all God has done for you through His Son, Jesus
Christ, give yourself fully to Him in humble obedience. Your life lived fully unto Him is a continual act of worship.” Sweet sisters and brothers, living for His glory and purpose is an act of worship, a demonstration of thankfulness played out as we acknowledge His greatness in our lives every day and as we obey His directives.
Much like that mom baking cookies for her son, God delights to give us little blessings (and big ones too). Perhaps we can say, “Thank you,” not only with words of gratitude but also by responding to some special action He is laying on our hearts--visiting someone in the hospital, inviting your neighbor over for coffee, volunteering at a homeless shelter, forgiving a foe or someone you have imagined is a foe, teaching a Bible study class or prayer group. After all, in 1 Samuel 15:22, God does say He delights in our humble obedience over our empty sacrifices.
So go ahead and give God that worshipful hug of obedience, and
viewers a little feeling of Gustav Klimt’s work during his golden age. The pieces also pose free-spirited will, reminiscent of Henri Rousseau’s work (French post-impressionist painter.) This is translated in compositions that defy traditional scales and in a chromatic exuberance that also attempts to exceed the margins of the cloth.
The IMAS is located at the intersection of Bicentennial and Nolana Avenue at 1900 W. Nolana in McAllen. Hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sundays. Regular admission is $5 with discounted $3 for children ages 4-12, students with an ID, and adults 65+. Museums for All (WIC/EBT) discount is $1 for up to four people per card. Please check our website at theimasonline.org or call 956-6812800 for more information. •
what He might actually be hearing you say is, “God, You’re the best; I appreciate You. I love You so much.”

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Nova Scotia
By Sandy Olson
A few years ago, I took a wonderful cruise around the coast of Canada, and the ports included Nova Scotia. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the world, and the people of Nova Scotia, with their Scottish heritage, were warm and friendly--just like this recipe!
Sultana Scones
3 cups all-purpose flour
Some Like It Hot
••• Champagne Delight
•••
Submitted by Lone Star Citrus Growers
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1½ cups champagne
¼ cup cold water
1 tablespoon crème de cassis (optional)
½ cup sugar*
Strawberries and fresh mint for garnish 1/3 cup strained fresh orange juice
Sprinkle gelatin over water in small, noncorrosive saucepan. Let stand until soft. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until gelatin is dissolved, approximately 1 minute. Gradually stir in sugar and orange juice. Heat over low heat, stirring gently until sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. (If mixture is stirred too vigorously or whisked, surface of jelly will be foamy.) Remove from heat; cool 5 minutes. Add champagne and, if desired, crème de cassis. Stir gently with a spoon until bubbles subside. Transfer to a small bowl, cover tightly, and refrigerate 4 to 6 house or until jelly has set. Serve in individual champagne glasses. Garnish with a strawberry and fresh mint.
*Taste your champagne before using. You may wish to adjust the sugar according to the sweetness of the champagne.•
Spotted in the RGV Laguna
Madre
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
South Texas sunsets can be pretty spectacular. While the skies over Port Isabel were putting on a show recently, the South Padre Island skyline garnered attention. Looking to the east, passengers in the Island’s 25th Lighted Boat Parade were treated to rays of pale blue and pink, spanning the horizon. •
½ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 large egg, beaten ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ cup milk, not skim 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup white sultanas* 1 cup shortening
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl. Cut in the shortening with two knives or a pastry cutter. Add the sugar, beaten egg, and milk. Stir in the sultanas (golden raisins) and mix well. Roll out to ½-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch rounds or triangles. Place on a parchment-covered baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
* In the U.S., they are golden raisins
