Tropic Star Hosts Horseshoes for Golden Age Olympics

T he Golden Age Olympics, hosted annually by McAllen Parks and Recreation, encompasses a variety of sports and activities throughout the Winter Texan season.

Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr is the annual host of the horseshoes category. The park is home to 10 well-maintained pits and an active Horseshoes Club, meeting each weekday morning to play.

In February, players from eight RV parks-- Tropic Star, Paradise South, Trophy Gardens, Casa del Valle, Casa del Sol, Tip o’ Texas, VIP La Feria, and Alamo Rec Veh Park--took part in the tournament.

Dan McGuire, Tropic Star horseshoe coordinator, not only managed the entire event (alongside McAllen Parks and Rec) but also competed. “I enjoy the competition; it’s fun to win,” he said.

McGuire took gold in the Men’s 40 Percent Group.

In the Men’s 50 Percent Group, Tom Routh of Tip O’ Texas—who is ranked #4 in the world--took the gold. In the women’s division, Marlys

Timm of Trophy Gardens took gold in the 25 Percent Group.

Karen Olson, 82, of Tropic Star, took part in the women’s division and was thrilled to score a ringer after not having played in about 30 years. She is carrying on the legacy of her father, Ralph Kautc. He was an active player at Tropic Star.

Olson took bronze in the Women’s 10 Percent Group, placing behind Carolyn Hall (gold) of Alamo Rec and Vicky Chilcoat (silver) of Tropic Star. •
