Light Up the Holidays with McAllen
Inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting at the McAllen Convention Center
Light Up the Holidays with McAllen! Everyone in the community is invited to join Mayor Jim Darling and McAllen’s City Commissioners in the first ever lighting of the spectacular new 64’ Christmas tree to be on display at the McAllen Convention Center’s Oval Park. This inaugural ceremony will take place Monday, December 1, 2014 at 6:00 PM. Musical entertainment will be provided by local students, highlighting the event with Christmas cheer. This grand tree is the newest
and biggest addition of holiday décor displayed around town, just one of the traditions McAllen is celebrating this Holiday Season. The tree will be on display for the public to enjoy in the McAllen Convention Center’s Oval Park throughout the month of December. Already a popular location to visit at Palms Crossings, the added attraction of the tree to the Oval Park will make those visits even more magical. Continuing the 31 days of Holiday activities in McAllen’s Oval Park, are the McAllen Holiday Express Train and Paddle Boat Rides that will be available throughout the month of December for children and adults of all ages. This fun sized train will travel around Oval Park with views of the beautiful water features, sparkling Christmas lights throughout the park as well as the majestic Christmas tree. Paddle boats will also be available to share these views in the Oval Pond. The fee for each ride is $5 per person.

The McAllen Convention Center along with the McAllen Public Library will also be hosting the first ever A Very Merry Storytime at Oval
Park, a series of children’s book readings, to be held Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of December. Each scheduled

On Saturday, December 13th the McAllen Public Library will be featuring selections from their electronic book collection at 4:30pm. Come for A Very Merry Storytime and stay for Sunset Live which will feature live music, food, an artisan market and much more. A Very Merry Storytime will finish its series December 21st with a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. We invite you to cozy up for a reading of this classic holiday story in your favorite Christmas pajamas. ‘Tis the Season! ‘Tis the season for Festival of Lights in Hidalgo, Texas! Come one, come all! Special to Welcome Home RGV

intertime has finally arrived in the Rio Grande Valley, and that means Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights and the Hidalgo Ramon Ayala Christmas Posada are just around the corner! The beloved Christmas traditions that Hidalgo has become known for will make their spectacular return next month bigger and better than ever. For 24 years now, Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights has brought light and laughter to hundreds of thousands of families who come to experience the magic each year. And the Hidalgo Ramon Ayala Christmas Posada will mark its 15th year of giving back to the community and great entertainment by the legendary norteño star and his friends. Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights will kick off on Monday, Dec. 1, starting at 6 p.m. with the marvelous spectacle of the Festival of Lights Illuminated Parade, brighter than ever with more floats than ever before. Featuring more than 3 million lights among its 500+ large displays, the Festival of Lights is the largest Christmas light display in Texas. Visitors can

The festival also offers a Dinner, Concert, Trolley Tour package that includes a roast beef supper, complete with musical entertainment and a trolley or train ride through the lights. With carnival rides, the LED Ferris Wheel, ice skating at the Ice Palace and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights is the Rio Grande Valley’s favorite way to celebrate Christmastime.
The Hidalgo Ramon Ayala Christmas Posada will ring in its quinceanera year (15th annual) festivities with an allstar concert of norteno and tejano superstars, headlined by the legendary Ramon Ayala himself. And as children from throughout the Valley know, tens of thousands of free toys will be distributed to one and all. Mayor Martin Cepeda and the City of Hidalgo wish to thank the generous sponsors who make Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights, the Ice Palace, the Illuminated Parade and the Hidalgo Ramon Ayala Posada possible.

Christmas Parade in Downtown Harlingen December 5th Special to Welcome Home RGV

owntown Harlingen will host the annual RGV Jaycees’ Christmas Parade on Friday, December 5, 2014. The parade begins at 7 p.m. and proceeds down Jackson from 4th to “E” Street. This lighted spectacle includes bands, floats, marchers, horses, and more. The parade theme this year is a “Country Christmas.” Participants must register online at www.rgvjaycees.com. Parade entry fees and rules are available on this website.
Celebrate Christmas in the great outdoors at Resaca de la Palma State Park! Special to Welcome Home RGV

esaca de la Palma State Park (RDLP) is hosting its annual Christmas event, the Jolly Night Hike, taking place on Friday, December 13, 2014 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. This unique event is celebrated outdoors with the intent of providing our visitors and guests an enjoyable and educational holiday experience in nature. This year there will be festive activities for all ages,
lighted hiking trails, merry hayrides, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a 5K/1Mile Elf Dash, local talent performances, and a special visit from Resaca de la Palma’s very own “Green Santa Claus”. Admission fees for the event are $5.00 per adult, and $1.00 for children 12 and under. If you are interested in attending the event, or helping out,
please contact the park at (956) 350-2920. Resaca de la Palma State Park is part of the World Birding Center, a network of 9 sites that work together to promote conservation for birds and other wildlife through education. It is located at 1000 New Carmen Avenue, on the northwest side of Brownsville. The Visitor Center is open
Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Daily park admission is $4.00 per adult and children under 12 are free. To access the park from expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; at the end of the paved road, turn left to enter the park.

Story Telling
The Hurried Heart Hurry,
hurry, and a hustle some more. This is the season, the time for all those year-end, family, friends, co-worker errands, to purchase things to get done. Tomorrow, the office party, and then our annual home gathering of the neighbors, that is on the schedule. I need to call the catering service and make sure all the food is ordered. Then there are the children’s school plays, classroom gatherings, and parent teacher meetings we need to attend. Tis’ the season, of over scheduling, over spending, under sleeping, and over the top! Checking my list, I am seeing there is a lot more to do than I can accomplish in a day’s twenty-four hours. I will just have to bring dinner home (again) and work into the late evening hours to get it all completed, can’t shuffle anything off to the next day, that list is longer, more complicated and challenging than today’s cadre of errands and “to do’s.” Oh, dang, (I mean darn), I forgot to pick up the clothes at the dry cleaners and our youngest daughter absolutely needs that outfit or the text messages will start with, OMG and sent to all her friends that her parents are BTW out of it and her VBF will not even think of talking to her if she doesn’t just have that one outfit. I could call them and see when they close, NO, better yet, I need to rush over there breaking all laws of speed and physics… another ticket another day, Season Greetings, yeah, right…. Did I forget to text my office and tell them to move all my next day’s meetings up an hour? If I do that, I will have the opportunity to go to the salon for a half hour of a relaxing manicure and spa treatment, maybe they can get my procedure completed in 20 minutes, that would give me 10 minutes to pick up a double espresso latte, with whipped

crème after I get out of the spa. I could skip dinner and work while the rest of the family is munching the “gourmet” fast food I will be bringing home, who cares if the French fries are cold, it’s nutrition, isn’t it, anyway hamburgers stay together better when they are not as hot, the grease works as a kind of adhesive. OK next on the list, call my parents and wish those Happy Holidays and all that sort of thing. I need to figure a way to beg off going over to their home; could I be not feeling well, planning for a corporate trip, the kids are “sick”, I don’t have time this year… used that last year and the year before, why do they sound so disappointed, it isn’t like we don’t see each other during the year. Wait, when was the last time we were there? Oh, I remember when dad came home from the hospital, we visited for a few hours, or were it minutes, can’t remember – they probably can’t either… NOW, time, just barely time to call the printer, give them the list of friends, clients, neighbors, vendors and who else to send that holiday card out to. I have the list on my smart phone, the printer has the cards and someone there can sign our names! Glad they have that service, or those holiday cards would not get mailed. Wish traffic was a bit lighter, isn’t this the holiday season, why is everyone in a hurry? Don’t they know this is the season of sharing and giving and I need that lane change, so give it to me buster, or you will be sorry, VERY sorry. WHAT was that sound? Did that person just hit me, did they just signal me with their hand? Thanks for the holiday spirit, you nut-case, have a not nice holiday. What’s your hurry – now I missed my exit and that will take another 10 minutes off my schedule… Where is my phone? I am so calling the police on that person,
I think they hit me and continued on, cute – buster, really cute. If I stop then my schedule will be really off, heck with it, I will say it happened in a parking lot that is what this road seems like right now. This horrific schedule isn’t what the holiday season is supposed to be about, is it? Why are some people so happy and others not? Mom and Dad are always going around this time of the year being jolly, with all sorts of smiles, except when I say our family is way, way too busy to spend the day with them. They seem to get the errands completed, the tasks checked off the preverbal list (oh, that is where that came from) and still have time to talk to friends, strangers, give of their time and not sweat the holiday season. They don’t call this time of year what I call it, not politically correct, they call it Christmas and wish people a “very Merry Christmas”, seems to work so well for them. I remember Christmas was a special time when I was a child, my parents decorated the house inside and out; there was always a warm and comfortable feeling, even more at this celebration time of year, what happened to that? Darn CD player is not working and all the music is “noisy” on the radio, not relaxing, not like, like the hymns and songs I remember. Where did the slower times go to? When did they go away? I remember the quieter, slower and relaxing times when there wasn’t all the electronic intrusion of cell phone calls, text messages, twitter and what not… phones were attached to the wall and you had to walk somewhere in the house to answer them. People came by, sat on your front porch, and went for evening walks. Church as even kinder (can I say that?) then. It seemed the pastor had time to talk to each and every one as they left the worship
service. They weren’t in a hurry to get to the restaurant for lunch; they went home or were invited to another person’s home for Sunday dinner. Now today, get there, get where, open this close that, set the alarm on the house, wasn’t a house a home at one time? Just when did that lifestyle disappear? Jesus came to this earth to bridge the eternal gap between man and God. Maybe, just maybe that is where I should be looking for peace. Peace in my soul, peace in my heart IF I could do find that inner peace in me through Him, and then I could share that with my family. I slow down, they slow down, and we all have peace. I remember when I was in Sunday school the teacher taught about the Christmas season being too busy, now they should see the season, starts before Halloween and ends after the end of the year. I would think now is the time to pause and to remember to take back what Christmas is all about. It shouldn’t be about the presents received or given, shouldn’t be about the office and neighborhood parties, or the rushing from here to there, but about the celebration of the gift from God with His son. OK, time to put the brakes on, time to celebrate what the Christmas season is all about. How can I do this…? Maybe starting with saying Merry Christmas to myself, then my family, my co-workers and others that I come into contact with. They would be the clerks, restaurant staff, attendants and even strangers. Wishing someone, anyone Merry Christmas is religiously correct, and perhaps – just perhaps someone else will do the same for another. Then perhaps we all can slow down and soak in the Christmas season for what it should be and really is all about. •

Weslaco Chamber to host Winter Texan Coffee Bar beginning December 1 Special to Welcome Home RGV
T
he Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce invites winter visitors for free coffee and pastries beginning Monday, December 1, 2014 beginning at 9 am at the Weslaco Business Visitor Center at 275 S. Kansas, next to City Hall. The coffee bar features a weekly sponsor- a chamber member that provides the coffee, pastries and often times, promotional items for all of our Winter Texan Visitors from December through March. Winter Texans will stop by the Visitors Center for information on Weslaco and all the current events happening in and around the community. The Visitors Center features all types of literature including Visitor’s Guides, Mid Valley Map, Rio Grande Valley map, restaurant

directory, nature attractions and many more. Holiday Festivities! Pharr Christmas Fiesta & Lighted Parade Special to Welcome Home RGV
T
he All-America City of Pharr invites you to the Pharr Christmas Fiesta & Lighted Parade on Saturday December 6th. Food booths, carnival rides, a lighted parade and an evening of beautiful Christmas music will entertain families from across the Rio Grande Valley as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas Fiesta will begin at 4:00pm at
100 W. Newcombe; and lighted Christmas floats are welcome to join the parade; which will begin at 6:00pm from the M. Rivas parking lot at Cage Blvd & Polk. At 7:00 pm, Mayor Leo “Polo” Palacios Jr. will light Pharr’s official Christmas tree in front of Pharr City Hall at 118 S. Plans underway for Mid-Valley Lighted Christmas Parade Special to Welcome Home RGV
T
he City of Weslaco, the Weslaco EDC and the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce are preparing for the 20th Annual Mid-Valley Lighted Christmas Parade, set to be held on Thursday, December 18, at 6 p.m. on Texas Blvd. in Weslaco. The theme this year is A Merry Frozen Christmas. The Grand Marshalls for this year’s parade are a trio of Rio Grande Valley boxing champions: Heavyweight Eric “Drummer Boy” Molina, Welterweight Robert “La Amenaza” Garcia, Lightweight Omar “Panterita” Figueroa, and American Ninja Warrior Finalist Abel Gonzalez. The Mid-Valley Lighted Christmas Parade features decorated floats, marching bands, classic cars, and more, all decked out in lights and holiday décor. Immediately following the parade, the City of Weslaco and the Weslaco
EDC invite all to Alfresco Weslaco Music & Art on the Street in the Weslaco City Hall parking lot which will feature a free ice skating rink for kids and adults, live music by Mariachi Juvenil Nueva Tradicion & the New Variety Band, arts & crafts vendors, food vendors, a fine art tent, and a classic car display. Application entries for the parade are available online on websites for the City of Weslaco, the Weslaco EDC, and the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce. You can also download the applications from the respective Facebook pages. The applications will also be available at City Hall and the Business Visitor & Event Center. The History of the National Butterfly Center Special to Welcome Home RGV
The
National Butterfly Center is a project of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and study of wild butterflies in their native habitats. This 100-acre wildlife center and native species botanical garden contains trails for exploring, observation areas, educational exhibits and a plant nursery. The National Butterfly Center is NABA’s flagship facility and a primary focus of its efforts aimed at educating the public about the value of biodiversity, the beauty of the natural world, the wonder of butterflies, particularly, and the powerful role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and sustainable food resources. The Center is open for exploration, daily. Expanding through Education & Collaboration Formed in 1993, NABA has grown to over 4,500 members in 30 chapters across the United States. Thanks to efforts to educate the public about the importance of butterflies and the ways in which they benefit humans and the environment, butterflies are viewed as wildlife to be protected. NABA has been instrumental in saving magnificent Regal Fritillaries, as well as Miami Blues—now

known from one single colony off Key West in Monroe County, Florida. NABA is on the steering committee of the Monarch Joint Venture, and is the only NGO on the South Florida Endangered Butterfly Working Group. In addition, NABA runs the annual Butterfly Count Programs in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with the help of thousands of volunteers in the field. The published results of these counts are used by scientists to monitor
butterfly population trends in North America, and serve as the nucleus of the NABA initiative to create a continentwide database of activity known as Butterflies I’ve Seen, or BIS. Because butterflies are extremely sensitive to changes in environmental conditions, they serve as an early warning system for issues related to environmental degradation due to climate change, pollution, and more. To promote the growth of wild butterfly
populations, NABA encourages gardening and has developed a series of guides for those interested in creating habitats for butterflies and insects across North America. NABA Chapter members, whether master naturalists, hobbyists or enthusiasts, work within their communities to plant butterflyfriendly gardens at private residences and public places including local schools and parks. The National Butterfly Center supports the education and conservation mission of NABA. Not only does The Center collaborate with the National Park Service to ensure the survival of Monarchs on their mass migration through the Rio Grande Valley, it recently partnered with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife to plant 12,000 plugs of rare grasses and endangered wildflowers in Fall, 2011, to create the Geoffrey McAllen Memorial Native Grassland and Wildflower Refugium. Moreover, thousands of local school children and residents, tourists, environmentalists and scientists all enjoy exploring the Center’s grounds, and the opportunity to discover caterpillars, butterflies and other critters in the wild.

E
xuberant young parents arrived at the National Butterfly Center with their son earlier this week. They came to enjoy the splendor of migration during the peak of butterfly season. Their little boy was clearly overwhelmed by the flurry of activity, brightly displayed at his eye level, where hundreds of Queens and an array of Skippers hovered and zipped across a bed of Betony Mistflower. From Dad’s back pocket protruded a magnifying glass, while Mom held a small bug box full of plastic insects. Safely positioned between his watchful parents, the tot attempted to wield a pair of over-sized tweezers designed to help him catch more critters for observation.
This type of scene plays out regularly in our gardens, which have grown a reputation for attracting more volume and variety of wild butterflies than anywhere else in the Rio Grande Valley. People also come in search of beetles, the Texas Unicorn Mantis, Indigo snakes, and South Texas’ specialty birds, like the Altamira Oriole and Olive Sparrow. All of these creatures are residents of the National Butterfly Center, and that’s just the way we like it! This place is a living laboratory for folks, young and old, who come to appreciate our region’s unique diversity of flora and fauna, Although we do not allow the collection of specimens, living or dead,

Upon discovering a crippled butterfly whose wing had been badly damaged, Mom and Dad agreed the plastic pinchers should be put away, in favor of the magnifying glass. Now fascinated and fearless, the family enjoyed a fantastic day in the great outdoors, exposing their prized possession to our natural treasures for mutual reward. The Palm Shadows reunion was held in Kirksville, Missouri
on July 23 through July 26. Ninety people were in attendance. Reunion headquarters was at the Days Inn Motel. Activities included a hospitality room, city and museum tours, antique appraisals, games, boat ride and lunch at Thousand Hills State Park and VIP seating at a concert on the town square. Chairpersons, Bev Powell and Arlene Lamb, are to be commended for a successful and enjoyable reunion.

Downtown Harlingen announces a Holiday Word Game which is free and open to the public, with an entry deadline of January 4, 2015. Winners will be announced on January 8, 2015. Prizes are gift certificates to Downtown Harlingen businesses. In order to play, individuals should visit Downtown Harlingen between November 24, 2014 and January 4, 2015. A total of 46 downtown businesses will be displaying Holiday Word Game posters in their windows. Entrants should collect the letters displayed on the Holiday Word Game posters and record them on a Holiday Word Game entry form. Entrants must correctly solve the word puzzle on the entry form in order to be entered into a drawing for prizes. No purchase is necessary but only one entry per person is allowed.
Game rules and entry forms are available at the 46 participating Downtown Harlingen businesses, at the Harlingen Downtown office located at 209 W. Jackson, and on the website, www.downtownharlingen.com.
