It is hard to believe that Welcome Home, Rio Grande Valley is in our sixth year! It has gone by so fast, thanks to the never ending faith and support that you have placed in us. At Welcome Home, RGV, we want to be the ultimate resource for retirees in the Rio Grande Valley. That’s not as simple as it sounds, as they are such a diverse group - and so are their needs. What makes us different is that we listen. We participate. We empathize. And we act. At Welcome Home, RGV, we are proud of what we’ve accomplished, but more than anything we are excited about where we are going.
This year, we will continue to strengthen our current programs, and find additional ways to make your experience in the Rio Grande Valley a pleasurable one. On the Cover MEET THE MYERS
Don and Donna Myers are true CONVERTED TEXANS. Don was born in Oolitic, IN and raised in the area. Donna was born in St. Louis, MO. They met and were married in Colorado 29 years ago after each had lived in Texas. They have 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Two of their children and three of their grand children were born in Texas. Their grandchildren are all in their teens and are becoming great young adults. Their children and their families are currently residing in Mississippi, North Carolina and Florida, all great places to visit. Don and Donna have been avid RV’ers and have travelled together for many years. They have made many pleasant winter trips to the Rio Grande Valley as Winter Texans. While living in East Texas at Holly Lake Ranch, they decided to live full time in their RV in 2002. The house was sold, furnishings were disposed of, and a bigger and roomier motorhome was purchased. They made their first stop in Livingston, TX to become Escapees and they were on their way. After seven years of the nomadic full-timer lifestyle, they decided to settle down in Harlingen, sold the motorhome, and bought a house in Sunshine Country Club Estates. But wanderlust prevailed, and soon they were on the road again taking short trips in their travel trailer. Now on their third travel trailer (oh yes it is a habit), they have been lucky enough to spend the hot part of the RGV summer in the mountains of New Mexico in the beautiful setting of Ruidoso. In addition to travel trailer camping, they enjoy taking cruises, attending RGV dances, and enjoying living the Tropical Texas Lifestyle with frequent trips to South Padre Island. The Valley supplies lots of activities, flea markets, festivals and the like to keep them busy. Frequent trips, to Mexico for shopping, provide bargains and good times. Don is a true golf hack. Donna is an avid golfer and has been Ladies Club Golf Champion at Holly Lake Ranch as well as at SCCE. As about everyone in the RGV can attest to, Donna is also an avid line dancer, and currently teaches in Harlingen two days per week at Tropic Winds and one day at Sunshine Country Club Estates. No, not native Texans, but proud to be Converted Texans, Don and Donna are proud to call the Valley home! Thanks to Kristi and Welcome Home RGV for helping us and thousands more enjoy the Tropical Texas lifestyle and live the RGV life to its fullest.
