It feels like it was just yesterday I was writing the introduction for our second annual Welcome Home, RGV Directory and here I am writing one for our third edition! The past year has flown by and we are so excited to launch our third edition and we hope you will find this directory useful as you plan your activities across the Rio Grande Valley. We know that you have choices when it comes to your retirement destination, and we are thrilled that you have chosen the Rio Grande Valley as yours. From South Padre Island to Rio Grande City with all points in between, each one of our cities are so very different from the other – and I would like to encourage you to experience them all! As a McAllen native myself, I speak from the heart and from first-hand experience that the Valley has so much to offer, such as affordable living, great weather, opportunities for involvement, outdoor excursions, the arts, cultural activities and an endless variety of shopping and dining.

MEET THE TIMMERMANS Bob and Jackie are from Kansas City, Missouri where both of them worked for Trans World and American Airlines. They found their way to the Rio Grande Valley fifteen years ago to visit their son, a Master Martial Artist, who resides in the Mission area. Although Bob and Jackie return to Kansas City each year, where their two daughters and three grand-children live, the fun and their RGV friends bring them back every fall. McAllen McAllen Parks and Recreation maintains exercise and fitness trail systems at various parks located throughout the city. The trail systems combine jogging and fitness stations to provide residents and visitors a great workout in beautiful outdoor locations. • •

Start at the parking lot and follow the winding trail through the park. This route is approximately 4 miles. •

Loop 499 (Bike Lane). Bike lane begins on the corner of FM 507 and Loop 499 (corner of TSTC and Morgan Blvd.). Go north until the intersection of North Expressway 77 and then turn around back to the beginning. This route is approximately 6 miles. Harlingen Soccer Complex. 4515 E. Harrison Ave. Exit parking lot and go east on Tyler/Harrison Avenue. Turn north on FM 509 (Paso Real) and continue to FM 508. On FM 508 head west and look for Country Store at intersection of FM 508 and FM 507. Turn north on FM 507 and continue on to FM 1018. At 1018 head west towards frontage road and continue north to FM 498.Turn east from frontage road on to FM 498 to Santa Monica (FM 1420). Then turn south on FM 1420 until you reach FM 508. At FM 508 head south to FM 106. FM 508 and FM 506 will merge and continue south which will take you back to the soccer complex. This route is approximately 50 miles.
Mission • Hike and Bike Trail. South Conway (FM 1016) to the World Birding Center 5-mile Hike and Bike Trail, which includes Asphalt-Covered Trial, 2 Bridges, and parking lot for up to 30 vehicles. •
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Drive (FM 2062), 4 nature trails ranging in length from ¼ mile to 2 miles. Bike rentals (1 and 2 seat bikes) are available.
Rio Hondo • Laguna Atascosa Refuge. Bicycles are permitted on tour roads and some service roads. Service roads are primitive routes where riders should be prepared for emergencies. Check with Refuge staff for approved routes and trail maps. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, patch kits to repair a flat, and be prepared to walk several miles if your bike breaks down. Off-road riding is prohibited.
