publisher’s note It is hard to believe that Welcome Home, Rio Grande Valley is in our fifth year. As I reflect on where we were five years ago to where we are today, I have to say it is because of the faith and support that you have placed in us.

And we're just getting started. My father has always told me that anyone can be good at many things, but it takes hard work and determination to be the best at something. At Welcome Home, RGV, we want to be the ultimate resource for retirees in the Rio Grande Valley. That's not an easy task, as they are a diverse group. And so are their needs. What makes us different is that we listen. We participate. We empathize. And we act. At
Welcome Home, RGV, we are proud of what we've accomplished, but more than anything we are excited about where we're going. This year, we will continue to strengthen our current programs, and find additional ways to make your experience in the Rio Grande Valley a pleasurable one. On the Cover MEET THE FREEMANS
Tarry and Bette Freeman spent over thirty years together working for Hallmark Cards and, after knowing each other for over twenty years decided to get married and give life a new start. They have now been married eighteen years. They don't have any children, but Tarry says "might be in the plans but, not until we both 'grow up' first!" After retiring from Hallmark Cards, they decided to travel in their fifth wheel to see as much of this Great Country as possible. They heard about the Valley from some folks they met in Missouri while looking for places to spend warmer winters than their dear Kansas offered! The Freemans came to the Valley from Lawrence, Kansas, Home of The University of Kansas Jayhawks, for the first time in 1998. They found themselves at Alamo Palms RV and Mobile Home Park, and thought they would head to Florida shortly after their visit here. They never made it to Florida, as Tarry says "being here just felt so good".

The Freemans enjoy the many activities the Valley has to offer and, by staying here year round, get to experience so many of them. Bette loves Bingo, who would have guessed, and the nice slow pace of Valley life. She also cares for her Mother full time, feeling blessed that she can enjoy these later years with her. Tarry enjoys most all aspects of Valley life, and that includes eating a lot of shrimp on South Padre Island! Tarry also likes to take photos of people and nature, also has an interest in water color painting (although he says he's "just not so good at it"). Friends also make up a large part of their lives here in the Valley. Tarry says "'The 'Valley', though we have never quite figured out what that means, has been good to us. The people are friendly and, the climate can not be beat! With folks like Kristi and Welcome Home RGV here to make life even more enjoyable, we can only encourage each of you to 'get here as quick as you can and stay as long as possible', forever being a nice option!
