hello

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I ’ve always loved shrimp. When I was a little girl, my mother and grandmother took me out to lunch one day to a popular seafood restaurant. My mom knew I loved fried shrimp, so she ordered me the child’s plate. When the food arrived, my plate was half of their adult portions, and I couldn’t hide my disappointment. The story, as my mother tells it, is that I told them, “Next time we come here, I’m going to disguise myself as an adult!”

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

My grandparents quickly learned that the best place to take me for a special dinner was anywhere they had a seafood buffet so I could eat as much shrimp as I liked without breaking the bank! Fried, blackened, peel-and-eat, bacon-wrapped…I love it all!

If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

However, I never knew the importance of wild-caught shrimp and how big of a business shrimping is in South Texas. That is, until I went on the Texas Gold Shrimp Tour. What a fascinating presentation on what life on a shrimp boat is like and how shrimp are caught, processed, and delivered from the gulf to the table. It’s definitely not magic!

Shrimp Tour Season is Here!

Honestly, I never knew that Texas had shrimp!”

Janette Baertsch’s upfront declaration made the recent visit to Brownsville’s Texas Gold wild-caught Gulf shrimp all the more intriguing.

It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

I hope you’ll join us on one of our Texas Gold Shrimp Tours. They are available January 15 - February 29, so make sure you don’t miss out on this incredible tour. Give us a call at 956-687-5115.

Baertsch is referring to co-vice-president Greg Londrie, who, along with his brother and co-VP, Chris, and Leonard Leyva, the Texas Gold boat guide, offered detailed insight into various aspects of the shrimping industry.

Baertsch is originally from the Texas Hill Country. She and her husband, Orin, moved from San Diego to the Rio Grande Valley about two years ago to be closer to family. Before taking part in a recent group tour, Baertsch thought shrimp was primarily imported from Mexico.

The engaging, in-depth tour of Texas Gold is the latest addition to Tours by Welcome Home RGV’s line-up (after a hiatus since 2016).

And the reviews are in. “The owner was so personable, and boy did he teach us some things!” says Baertsch.

Topics addressed: the length of the shrimping season, how often you can re-freeze shrimp, and how to tell wild-caught from farm-raised shrimp. (For the record, there’s no such thing as “fresh.” According to Greg, it’s all fresh-frozen, considering the time it takes to venture out, catch and store, haul back, and process.)

“That’s why [Tours by] Welcome Home has been so fun,” Baertsch shares. “It’s like exploring my home state all over again!”

The junket includes a deep dive into the company’s history and the current state of the industry, a tour of a shrimping vessel, and the manual labor involved.

It’s a hard business, Leyva explains. “I have yet to meet somebody that says, ‘I want to go shrimping for 45 days,’” referencing the extreme conditions and intense labor involved, including hauling in nets and sitting on stools--only about four inches off

the deck--to process each catch. The tour culminates in how the shrimp is processed--including how to easily devein a shrimp--plus a generous sampling of the end result. Now, who’s hungry for shrimp? Shrimp recipes will be featured in this publication. For information on organizing a group tour, visit welcomehomergv.com or call 956-687-5115. •

Stillman House, Brownsville

T he small, brick-paved courtyard behind the historic Stillman House in Brownsville is home to various plants, including sage, banana, and yucca. The house dates back to 1850, when Charles and Elizabeth Stillman rented it from builder-owner Henry Miller. The home’s namesake only lived there for

three years; the Trevino family owned the home and incorporated additions from 1858 to 1958. For more information, visit brownsvillehistory.org. For a group tour of historic Brownsville, contact Sarah Denzer with Tours by Welcome Home at 956-687-5115. •

This Quartet Shares Abundance of Music and Ministry

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

A bundance Quartet is a regional group based out of Branson, Missouri. The group was formed in late July of 2013. Current members are David Hartwell, Alan Pohlmeier, Michael Sproles, and Jamie Layton. These four men have come together with the purpose of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, through song. Along with their talents, Abundance Quartet is full of fun and laughter.

David Hartwell (Tenor) - “The most important decision I have made was accepting Jesus as my personal Savior. That is why I sing about the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done for us.”

Alan Pohlmeier (Lead) - “Gospel music has been the centerpiece in my life and the anchor of my faith in Christ. I firmly believe the touch of the Savior can be delivered through music.”

Michael Sproles (Baritone) “God has truly blessed me through all the different ministries He has placed me in. There is no doubt that He has led me into this ministry with Abundance Quartet.”

Jamie Layton (Bass) - “I finally felt led to start a group, and God has been putting everything together. It is amazing how He brings people together, and your paths seem to be connected.”

Abundance is a little different than most of the quartets traveling today. Their ministry is truly a music ministry. The group sings all of the old songs--generally 16-18 in a typical 60-70-minute concert--and they always present an invitation for people to respond at the end of the service.

Abundance Quartet looks forward to seeing you at the Winter Texan Expo Tuesday, January 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. •

Lakewood Celebrates 30th Year of Christmas for the Children

A hh…wint e r in South Texas is anticipated this time of year. As Winter Texan residents are returning to the Valley, at Lakewood RV Resort, that means it’s time to prepare for the 30th Christmas for the Children project. This year, Lakewood residents are providing Christmas for 15 less fortunate families

from a local elementary, where many Lakewood RV Resort Winter Texans have spent time over the years mentoring students. This annual project started with the Lakewood Worship Committee decades ago.

Fundraisers for this project include a dance with Leslie Blasing January 4,

2024, from 7 – 9 p.m.; a breakfast February 3, 2024, from 7:30 – 9 a.m.; and a soup luncheon and bake sale March 8, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Residents also held a quilt raffle, choosing the winner December 4. The quilt was designed by Lakewood quilting ladies.

As chair of this project, Winter Texan Donna Wright explained how the project works. “On the day of the Christmas for the Children party, the families

come to our RV Resort for fun with Santa and Mrs. Claus and meet our residents,” she explained. “They enjoy cookies, punch, and fellowship and receive groceries, gifts, and a handmade quilt, in addition to items for each child and a special gift for the mother of the family. We receive a warm sense of the season in our hearts, serving God doing His work.” •

Sit-n-Knit. It’s what we do in the middle of the crazy.

Did you retire and find that, now, you are busier than ever? Is your world getting louder? Well, our Sit-n-Knit areas are just what you need!

The Lamb’s Loom is a prayershawl ministry in McAllen, and Sit-n-Knit is at the heart of all we do. It’s a fun, peace-filled place to enjoy each other’s company, share project ideas, and make new friends. And, of course, we all enjoy the creativity and fun when show-n-tell comes in the door.

Another thing we have added to the Sit-n-Knit is prayer time Thursday afternoons at 4 p.m., and all are invited. Our regular closing hour is at 4 p.m., so this gives us a little quiet space to join together and pray over those we serve and to seek God in all we do (Psalm 90:17). You’re also welcome to bring in a project you are making for someone, and we will join you in prayer for that person. We have a saying around here that

Sit ‘n Knit ‘n Chill

“The Lamb’s Loom is more than a yarn shop; we’re a ministry and a mindset.” That mindset is putting service into action, and we use yarn to do just that!

While you’re here, check out our Donation Chest. That is where lots of people add handmade items we then send out with mission groups all over the world.

From Bangladesh to Durango, Kentucky, to Kenya, we know God already has a home for all of these items. We often receive donations in the mail from people all over the country, wanting their handmade gifts added to the

Donation Chest. It’s like Christmas every time a box arrives. We cherish the creativity and love that pours out of the boxes. You can just feel the love in every stitch. A special thank you, as well, to all of you who think of us all year and come back to your Texas home with bags and boxes of hats, blankets, and shawls to add to the Chest. What a blessing you are to so many around the world.

Everyone can join in The Lamb’s Loom fun in person at 1102 Tamarack. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information

are available on our website at thelambsloom.com.

Let’s continue to #stitchitforward together. There’s always #loveineverystitch. •

Internationally known as the “Voice of Aggieland,” the Singing

Cadets are Texas A&M University’s premier men’s chorus. David L. Kipp became the thirteenth director of the 60-member men’s choral group in the fall of 1995. Under his leadership, the Singing Cadets are staying true to their crisp military style and diverse selection of music. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the performance starts at 7 p.m. Seating is general admission, and the cost for a ticket is a modest $12. Monies raised from the concert will go toward two university scholarships. One scholarship will be awarded to a vocal music student at The University of

Texas Rio Grande Valley, and the other scholarship will be awarded to a deserving member of the Texas A&M Singing Cadets. Both of these scholarships are funded by the Senior Ambassadors, the host for this concert.

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

You’re Wearing That?

T oday’s Wisdom: Fashion is very important. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well. ~Vivienne Westwood

I have always had challenges with fashion. I suppose it is the lot of most men, as we just don’t have those genes that make us fashion aware.

The discussions at home on this topic often start with something like, “You’re wearing that?” At that point, I generally turn around and head back to the closet for other options.

At other times, I can be guilty of failure to coordinate. It usually happens as we are about to leave for an event, sometimes even in the car pulling out of the driveway. I will catch my wife, who is wearing blue shorts and an orange top, staring at my

blue shorts and orange top. Guys won’t get that, but, at least in our house, that is just not done.

Sometimes we have a conversation after attending an event, and she will reference someone who was wearing a particular outfit. Men, you know none of us have any idea what anyone in a group gathering was wearing five minutes after we leave. My wife can tell you what everyone in the building was wearing. (Note: If you need an eyewitness to a crime, call a woman.)

Back when I was working and needed to dress professionally, I had a list hanging in my closet of every pair of pants and all the shirts that went with them. Yes, the ties were on the list, too. It worked well but had to be updated every Christmas to include the new shirts and ties.

One of the things I have learned in life is to just accept

the things I do not excel in as my lot in life. Men, never argue with a woman over fashion; you will lose and look foolish in doing so. They own this realm. Trust them.

At this point, I must offer one disclaimer: every once in a while, I will encounter a lady who obviously missed the good-fashion genes. Usually, my wife spots her first, but when even I notice it, well, it can make for a good chuckle.

I’m not being critical of anyone’s fashion. Variety is the spice of life. If you like it, go for it. It is what makes people-watching fun. I just might not notice you, though.

I’m just sayin’. •
