I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
You don’t have to twist my arm to get me to go to South Padre Island, especially during the winter. The relaxed pace, ocean air, and fresh seafood are good for my soul. There is always something happening at the Island, and I can be as busy as I want to be. Last season we were approached about the possibility of organizing a motorcycle rally. The answer was, of course, SURE!
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
Full confession: I’ve never owned a motorcycle, and the closest I’ve ever come to riding on one was a four-wheeled scooter. But organizing events is what we do, and once you get that down, you can organize just about anything--with a little (or a lot) of help from those who are passionate about the cause.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
I know there are a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts who also happen to be Winter Texans, and we hope that by organizing this rally, we will encourage other retirees to consider South Texas as a winter destination. And whether you ride or not, join me on South Padre Island as we ride the wave for the first time this February.

Spotted in the RGV
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Mission
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
This male Rio Grande wild turkey was spotted at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, with its flock, at a bird feeder. The turkey’s plumage consists of up to 6,000 feathers, according to wildlife.tamu.edu. Rio Grande wild turkeys have the largest population and the widest range across Texas compared to other species. Males
and females have the same multi-colored feathers; however, the females’ are muted, which makes them appear brown. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday. •

Palm Gardens RV Park Veterans Day, Remembrance Day
Submitted by Ruth Filz
V eterans Day and Remembrance Day is an annual observance to honor and remember the sacrifices of military personnel who have served in times of war and during peacekeeping missions. Originally known as Armistice Day, it commemorates the end of World War I and celebrates the service of both living and deceased veterans. Major hostilities during World War I formally ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, when
the Armistice with Germany went into effect. While events and traditions may slightly vary, the central theme of the observance remains the same-to express gratitude to brave men and women for their dedication and valor.
Two minutes of silence is observed at 11 a.m. on the eleventh of November (the eleventh month), marking the end of World War I in remembrance of the fallen. This tradition serves as a poignant reminder of the courage, strength, and selflessness displayed by those who have served and those who continue to serve.
In 1931, an act of Canada’s Parliament changed the name of Armistice Day to Remembrance Day, and in 1954, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
November 11, members of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen gathered to recognize and honor the Canadian and U.S. veterans
in the Park. They started by raising the Canadian and U.S. flags at 11. Residents gathered in the Hall and were greeted by Paul (PJ) LaBarge, who led them in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and O Canada . PJ shared information about Veterans Day and various wars our veterans have been involved in. He thanked our residents for their service. A display of the Fallen Soldier table was set up. This is also known as the POW/MIA or
Missing Man table. Each item on the table represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home.
Ladies from the Park’s quilt group presented the beautiful military service quilts they made for four of our veterans: Jerry Bradley, Roger Jacobs, Dianne Monk, and Kermit Tillotson. This is a tradition they have kept for several years. The quilts are made possible by the generous donations of our residents, for material and supplies, and by the time and talent of our quilters.
The celebration ended with lunch, cupcakes, and visiting with--and thanking--our veterans for their service. •
Seven Oaks Resort Serves Steak, Shrimp to Resort Veterans
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan Veterans Day evening, Seven Oaks Resort held its 2 nd Annual Steak and Shrimp Dinner to honor Resort vets. Eighty-three people in attendance made for a very successful celebration.
A program, organized by Pat Robshaw, opened the evening. It
included a brief history of each branch of the service, a reading of “In Flanders Fields,” and prayers for veterans. Table decorations were prepared and placed by Gail Dennis and June Nordenstrom. The kitchen crew of Judy Fullingim, Mike and Melissa Hevel, Paul and Rene Furedy, and Ron Bonnette did an outstanding
job of preparing the food. Melissa Hevel decorated the cake. Mike Hevel and Ron Bonnette set up the
grills to cook the steaks to order. Thank you, again, to our veterans for your service! •

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Y’all have heard of Giving Tuesday, right? It’s on the last Tuesday of November, just after Thanksgiving. It is meant to be a time to focus on the many charities and giving opportunities around our country. It is also a time to honor and thank the many people who have contributed to an organization. For The Lamb’s Loom, giving is a year-round thing! We do love the focus of giving in November, though. The season of Thanksgiving is a great time to pause and reflect and do an inventory of the time, talents, and gifts we all give during the year.
As The Lamb’s Loom is a nonprofit prayer-shawl ministry, we have so many people for whom to be thankful-Our shepherds, the volunteers who make our work days work out, our teachers who give of their time to teach classes, all of the people who give of their time to fill our Donation Chest with handmade items year-round, and
most certainly all of the people in the current 24 mission groups we serve, It is from our Donation Chest that thousands of gifted items go out to help these mission groups all around the world. They are given to those who need a hug wrapped up in the stitches of a shawl or found in the warmth of a hat on a child’s head. There are baby blankets given to families who need a helping hand, as well as love in a lap blanket laid over a heart that is grieving. That’s what we’re all about… sending love and encouragement out in every stitch.
We are also extremely grateful to those who have chosen to come alongside us all year to give financially and help in the support of this ministry. If you would like to join in or want more information, please give us a call or come by and visit with us. We always love the opportunity to share a few stories of encouragement and joy in what God blesses us to do here at The Lamb’s Loom!
During your time in the RGV, we hope you all will come to visit us in person. We are located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen and are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is additional parking available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com
We are truly grateful for all of our PEGs! Are you a PEG on The Lamb’s Loom? Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. Let’s continue to #stitchitforward together! •

by Chaplain Branden Freeland
We have been so very blessed to be in our third season in the RGV. We started out with the plan of being Winter Texans and quickly fell in love with the people in our parks. Those full-timers inspired us to answer the call to join them year-round and serve them in ministry…continually.
One thing we have observed with both the Winter Texans and the full-time RGV residents is the energy and stamina they seemingly possess and the drastic difference between them and those we know from the same age group that remain up north. This reminds me of Caleb from the Bible. At 40 years of age, Caleb goes with Joshua to spy out the promised land, and while others come back with fear and trembling, Caleb and Joshua--knowing God is on their side--are ready to go and possess the land, giants or no.
Because of their fearlessness and trust, Caleb and Joshua are
Perspectives A Mountain in a Valley
the only two from their generation allowed to cross over into the promised land. Even Moses could not come because of his disobedience to God. Fast forward 45 more years, and in Joshua, chapter 14, Caleb is 85 years old and ready to claim the land he was promised by God through Moses. He boldly proclaims he is as strong today at 85 as he was at 40 when God promised him the land and that, although there are giants in his land and great walled cities, he knows God is with him still and he will have the victory. “ Give me my mountain!” he proclaims. We feel we are in the presence of many Calebs here in the RGV, and some seem to think that because of their age, they are not able to serve God as they did in their younger years. But God isn’t done with you yet. Although you may think you are in a valley and your work is done, you are not defeated; God still has a plan for you.
Be like Caleb and show the
younger generation how it is done. They need your example to follow. Trust in the Lord for your strength, just as Caleb did. Your race is not finished. Keep running! Declare it: “Show me my mountain! Look out giants, here I come!”
