Breeze Lake and Sunset Palms Pay It Forward Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T
he theme for this year’s fundraiser at Breeze Lake Mobile Home and RV Campground in Brownsville was Pay It Forward. The third annual event, hosted by Breeze Lake and Sunset Palms RV and Mobile Home Park, also in Brownsville, was held March 1. The fun began with a social hour and 50/50 sales at 4 p.m. but didn’t end there. Guests then enjoyed a donation-only spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and dessert. After dinner, it was time for the Red-Carpet Prom, allowing guests to dress in prom-style attire. It wouldn’t be prom without a photo booth and a dance, and the DJ got the crowd fired up on the dance floor. Local businesses and individuals generously donated raffle items, which were a big hit.

All of the work by Breeze Lake and Sunset Palms residents and the generosity of local businesses and event guests resulted in a successful fundraiser. Nearly $3000 was raised; these funds will be used to purchase groceries to help local people in need. The first two years of Breeze Lake and Sunset Palms’ annual event raised $10,000, which they used to purchase service dogs for veterans. Tropic Star Holds 5th Annual Event to Honor Veterans Submitted by Louise Baker Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T ropic Star RV Resort honored
19 veterans Sunday, March 3, by presenting them with patriotic, lapstyle quilts. The quilts were designed and constructed by the quilters of Tropic Star. The seamstresses of Tropic Star sewed, as others pressed and cut. Some quilters made the tops at
their summer homes. Many folks contributed funds to the project. What an exciting adventure! This is the fifth year Tropic Star has honored our veterans, and a total of 153 quilts have been presented. Each quilt includes a label that reads, “One Quilt to Warm You, Thousands of Stitches to Thank You!” •

What’s in a name? You’ll get many
different answers to that question, but one group of women from around the Valley know the name Sandra means formidable, courageous, and protective of humanity. This group of friends, both new and old, met recently for the annual Sandra Luncheon and learned, first-hand, what a name can do for a person. The group, fashioned after one from years ago called The Lois Club, began meeting eight years ago. We enjoy conversation and love to share insights on how fortunate we are that our parents named us Sandra. Although our middle names are all different (Lynn, Fay, Lee, Joann, Sue, Gale, and Kay), every Sandra (or Sandy) seems to have the same friendly, adventurous spirit! Five are Winter Texans, while two have “converted.” All live in 55+ parks and are fun-loving and eager to know their namesakes. We try to meet each year near February 17, which is National Sandra Day in Sweden. Several other countries (Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Austria, Norway, and Czechia) also have official Sandra days, but it seems America has yet to get the memo! Our group is trying to correct that situation, albeit in a small way. But the hope is more will join us each year. This season’s group included Sandra Stender from Iowa; Sandra Simmons from Ontario; Sandra Addison and Sandy Bovingdon who are full-timers in the Valley; and me, Sandy Olson from Iowa. All five live

I learned that we like many of the same activities--cards, golf, eating, going to area events, and just chilling out with our “tribes.” One thing about living in an RV park is that there is never a shortage of things to keep us busy, so the Sandras have our fingers in a lot of pies! Since most come from different areas, we bring a variety of interests to share, games to play, foods to enjoy, plus hospitality to the max. In our former lives our group of Sandras include two nurses, a speech assistant, a teacher and farm wife, an office receptionist, a beautician, and a psychotherapist. We could pretty much take care of your whole body and mind, if necessary. With that kind of support, we invite any and all women lucky enough to be named Sandra to join us next February for a good meal, topped with friendship. Don’t Let the Old Man In by Ace Moore, Winter Texan at Palm Resaca Park Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

from cancer, Clint Eastwood told him the secret to staying young. He simply said, “Don’t let the old man (woman) in.” At 93, Eastwood continues to live by this maxim. He maintains a healthy lifestyle--eats healthy, d r i n k s s p a r i n g l y, e x e r c i s e s regularly, and keeps himself active mentally. He has worked in the movie industry for nine decades and has won five Academy Awards. Now, none of us are going to win Academy Awards, but we can certainly try to adopt Eastwood’s lifestyle if we wish to remain youthful. However, as you have probably seen in your park, there are several individuals who not only want to stay youthful, they want to relive their teenage years. We call these people “sen-agers.” Go for it, is all I have to say. You might as well live life with both guns blazing rather than sitting around waiting to walk into the light. Pam and Ron Jablonski from Wi s c o n s i n a r e e x a m p l e s o f this. “We’re retired,” said Pam. “We don’t care what day it is; we’re busy all the time.” To the Jablonskis, age is a matter of fact; it’s how you act that counts. The secret to keeping young, according to Pam, is keeping busy and not acting your age. The Jablonskis are definitely busy-biking, golfing, bowling, playing
pickleball and poker, and walking. Their calendar is completely full, she told me. People who follow them on Facebook are amazed at the things they see the Jablonskis doing. They also love going to the bars on South Padre Island to enjoy the music and food. They met some new friends on the Island and have even gotten them to join their bowling league. One thing Pam really likes is the annual causeway walk to South Padre. “It’s so exciting to have that much fun with so many people!” she said. Pam also organizes monthly tours for the Park. She tries to find exciting places to go. It gives the newer Park residents a chance to get together and discover the area. “One key part of the trips is trying to get drink specials for the group.” she said laughingly. Ron also keeps busy by doing odd jobs around the Park. “I love helping people out,” he explained. Dan Zimmerman from Wisconsin and Elnora Colley from Indian Head, Saskatchewan, met in our park. Dan fell in love with Palm Resaca Park instantly and bought a unit here. He now makes Texas his permanent home. Dan and Ellie got together after one of the dances when Ellie asked if anyone would like to boogie board with her. “I have to admit that I was interested in her, so I said that I would like to try it.” Dan said.
“We just look for the most interesting and unique things to do.” One day while walking on the South Padre Island beach, they saw a helicopter overhead. “That’s what we’re going to do now,” Ellie told Dan. When they saw an advertisement for lucha libre wrestling and realized it was that night, they went home and dressed in appropriate costumes and returned to the event. They have attended many concerts. Their tastes range from punk rock to orchestra to ballet. They saw Jesus Christ Superstar in McAllen, they attend the Harlingen concert series and performances at Camille Playhouse, and they
went to Brownsville Veterans Memorial Early College High School to watch the tenor bass choir. “We try to get involved in the community and area as much as we can,” said Ellie. “We’ll go on Showpass and see what’s happening in the Brownsville area.” They follow the Brownsville Historical Society events, as well as the downtown revitalization group with its Friday market and entertainment. “I am definitely not afraid to go to downtown Brownsville,” she said, “and I’ve even gone there alone.” Ellie is a member of the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art and a docent at the Gladys Porter Zoo. She participates in the kayak races during Charro Days. One place they really enjoy is Tony Estrada’s Broken Sprocket. There they met Abby Hernandez and her band. The Broken Sprocket has many exciting events, like Wine-Tasting Wednesday, speed dating, and lucha libre wrestlers. “We fly by the seat of our pants in finding things to do, and then we just do it,” said Dan. Both partners maintain their own units in the Park, so that enables them to keep their independence. Embrace a youthful spirit as you age. Balance enthusiasm with wisdom. Find joy in simplicity, stay active, and foster connections for a fulfilling and age-defying life. •

Making a Way When There Seems to be None by Chaplain Mark Bridgeman
I was an over-the-road, owner-
operator, truck driver for 30 years. When I first started my driving career, cell phones were not affordable for the average consumer; with a phone, calendars, e-mail access, and limited signal availability, it would have cost about $1800 in today's money! GPS was not even an idea yet. You had paper maps, and that’s about it. At the time, I had been a Christian for 16 years and was learning about trusting Jesus and living by faith. One day I was traveling from Alabama to New Jersey to make a delivery. New Jersey could just as well have been Japan for all I knew. I had never traveled north of Virginia at this time. I finally arrived close to the delivery site and noticed there are certain highways big, commercial trucks are not allowed on. This isn’t common in the south. So I pulled off and found a route and made my way there. When I arrived, I misjudged which entrance to use and drove past the proper one. “Well, what now?” I asked myself. The other drivers were not impressed with my
slow speed as I tried to find a place to pull off the road and figure out what to do. With no place to pull over--due to narrow streets--I finally found a large, three-lane road to use. At this point, I was lost and had no idea where to go to get back to the delivery site. I prayed, “Jesus, You know how to get me back there, and I’m asking You to make a way where there seems to be no way!” Then I chose to believe I could hear His voice and He would help me out of this predicament. Soon, the road narrowed to a two-lane road, and businesses gave way to the forest. At every stop sign and every light, I asked the Lord which way to go, and when I felt peace with a turn, I took it; when I felt anxious, I kept going straight. Twenty-six miles later, I came to the original interstate I had used. This time, I took the proper entrance and thanked God for being faithful to His word that He would never leave or forsake me. From that day to this one, 36 years later, I still know Jesus as the God who makes a way where there seems to be no way. Many of you will be leaving
the RGV soon to travel home for the summer. I would like to pray for you and your family's safety as you return home. I pray Jesus’ arms of protection will surround you and your loved ones and that ministering angels will guard you in all of your ways, just as He has done for me in the millions of miles I drove during my career and since. Be blessed in the name of Jesus, and we will see you next season! Bonham’s Bears Annual Teddy Bear Giveaway Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

volunteer group with members from other parks but based at Green Bay South in La Feria. We m a k e t e d d y b e a r s a n d donate them to first responders and organizations that support children. February 15, we gave away 375 teddy bears to eight organizations. Mama Bear is Rachel Carter. We asked the organizations about their work and how our teddy bears helped. Here are their comments: Harlingen Fire Department: “At accidents and fires, children are distraught. Every fire truck has teddy bears. We give them to children to comfort them and distract them while we assess the children’s injuries.” Harlingen Police Department: “Much of what the Harlingen Fire Department said applies to our work, as well. We deal with children in school settings, as well as in patrol settings.” 484th District Juvenile Court--Honorable Judge Adela Kowalski-Garza: “Texas can prosecute children as young as 10 years old, and the system is harsh. Children are arrested as ‘domestic terrorists’ when they make threats to avoid going to school. Children are arrested for self-medicating with drugs because they are neglected and ill. Children are undressed and photographed to prove bruises were incurred before--and not during--detention. Children may appear before me in chains and shackles. But Texas’ philosophy is that we want children to know we can help them. I have a comfort dog named Peanut, whose wagging tail and presence b r i n g s s m i l e s . We h a v e a psychologist who offers guitar lessons and music therapy. I am learning laughter therapy so we can add that as part of building coping skills. Community service builds work skills, and children appreciate the attention and guidance. Released detainees and their families are shown into a room, that my court bailiff, Juan Ramirez, and I put together. In the room, we give them gifts of children’s and adult books, in English and Spanish, and we give them teddy bears.”

The services are free to children 3 - 24 years old, and therapy sessions include their families. We meet children who may not understand or accept the reality of loss. Broken children can have behavior problems, attention deficit disorder, depression, poor performance in school, and shorter lives. After losing support, grieving children have a hard time loving themselves and others. We help them develop coping skills and offer them return visits when they are ready for the next step. We have girl empowerment programs at the gym. We held an outreach program at the police center. We hold hand-puppet party dances for the children. Judge Adela Kowalski-Garza asked if her handpuppet party dances could be part of the music-therapy sessions at the Courthouse. Julie Herrington said she had the same idea. The teddy bears go in our Buddy Barn, where children can select and keep a buddy. Microscape Quilt Exhibit Captures Microscopic Wonders Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T he International Museum
of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen is proud to announce the upcoming exhibition, Microscape, presented in collaboration with the Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA) May 11. This global exhibition showcases the intricate and captivating world of microscopic and magnified views through the medium of art quilts. Microscopes, magnifying glasses, and virtual imaging techniques have unveiled a universe of remarkable beauty and complexity beyond the naked eye's perception. Microscape delves into this hidden realm, inviting viewers to explore the minutiae of our known world, from the smallest particles to the tiniest organisms and natural details. Through the lens of art quilts, artists participating in this exhibition capture the essence of these microscopic wonders or magnify larger objects to reveal their smallest intricacies. "Microscape presents viewers with an intersection of art and science and is an observation of the natural world experienced through the eyes of the SAQA artists featured in this exhibition,” says IMAS Curator Marcelo Ramirez Garcia Rojas. “As an art and science museum, IMAS wants visitors to think about the relationship between the two fields of study and how artists and scientists perceive the natural world. Utilizing an unconventional medium, like the art quilt, to present these
natural phenomena is a unique approach to understanding the importance of the minute details of our environment." SAQA, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to promoting the art quilt medium. With a vision for the art quilt to be universally respected as fine art, SAQA has fostered a vibrant community of over 4,000 artists, curators, collectors, and art professionals, spanning the globe, for the past three decades.
Microscape offers a unique opportunity to witness the convergence of art and science, as artists translate the invisible and the overlooked into tangible expressions of creativity. Through their innovative use of textiles and quilting techniques, these artists redefine traditional notions of scale and perspective, inviting audiences to contemplate the beauty and complexity inherent in the microcosm.
Microscape will be on display at the International Museum of Art & Science from May 11 – August 25. Wait ‘til you Hear the Alibis at McAllen Mobile Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

nonprofit theatre group, will perform at The McAllen Mobile Home Park Wednesday March 20. The Player’s Community Theatre will present The Alibis. This play, written by 11 authors, presents the murder case of an eccentric billionaire and all the alibis the suspects have to claim their innocence. However, each so-
called alibi is, in itself, laced with guilt and crime. But don’t think you’re in for an evening of serious investigation. These crimes are far more comedic than sinister. The March 20 show is open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the play begins at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation only. T h e P l a y e r ’s S t u d i o i s a n educational, performing, and

McAllen Wind Ensemble Celebrates 50 Years With Anniversary Concert Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T
he McAllen Wind Ensemble, formerly the McAllen Town Band, is excited to conclude its 50th Anniversary Season with an extra special performance. This concert, A Golden Celebration: 50 Years of Music, is Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. From its first concert in 1974 as the Town Band to its current performances as the McAllen Wind Ensemble, the organization has been entertaining the public with spectacular music for 50 years. The golden-anniversary concert will feature music performed at the first concert in 1974, as well as brand new music. The Town Band Association commissioned a new composition by former band member Willie Owens. “Ciudad de las Palmas” will receive its world premiere at the concert and capture some of the energy and spirit of the band over the years.
The organization has always been focused on providing a musical outlet for local musicians, starting with some of our most talented local high school students. As has become tradition, the final concert of the season will spotlight the winner of this year’s high school concerto competition. T h e To w n B a n d h a s b e e n supported throughout its history by the City of McAllen. The City provides rehearsal space, has been a partner on performance venues, funds an annual grant, and is a regional advocate for public music. At the concert, the City will issue a proclamation honoring the band’s golden anniversary. The band’s history will also be honored through displays in the lobby. Photos from different eras and memorabilia will tell the history of the organization over the decades. Past directors and past members will attend to enjoy the
current ensemble’s music and share memories with each other. The president of the Board of Directors, Roy Contreras, shares, “We are so proud to perform our 50th anniversary concert. We build on the legacy of all of those musicians, volunteers, and supporters who have ensured our organization has been able to provide so many decades of music to the community.” The McAllen Wind Ensemble depends on the support of sponsors, the City of McAllen, and its patrons to continue to provide accessible community concerts. C u r r e n t l y, t h e M c A l l e n Wind Ensemble has about 75 musicians from across the region, ranging in age and professional backgrounds. It’s Never Too Late to Follow Your Dreams Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Ms. Julia Peck describes herself
as being 89 years young. She has followed her dreams and has recently published a book, Julia and Peter, which is a love story spanning two continents. Julia was born in England in 1934 and relates stories of her life and experiences with amazing accuracy and flourishing details to all persons who visit with her at Val’s Kountry Corral RV Park in Mission, Texas. In her childhood days, Ms. Julia escaped from the German bombing of WWII. She experienced the heartbreak of loss, due to the pain and fears of war. She followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a retail businesswoman. Ms. Julia later decided to travel to the USA on a ship and obtained a photography job, which allowed her to travel around America, where she found the love of--and respect for--freedom. Peter Peck, who she later met, was a fashion photographer and specialized in lighting and made equipment for the Kodak Company. Later, they married. Ms. Julia and Peter purchased an RV Park in Mission on Valentine’s Day 2002 and called it Val’s Kountry Corral, “the best little RV park in Texas.” Four years ago, Peter passed away, and Ms. Julia continued to own and maintain the Park by herself, with assistance from employees, family, and many friends. This Park has been a sanctuary for many Winter Texans and residents from the USA, Canada, and Europe. Larry Lemmert, a Winter Texan at Val’s from Wisconsin, took a special interest in Ms. Julia’s stories and began documenting the life and times of Julia and Peter. Other contributors are acknowledged in her book. Julia and Peter is filled with happenings and coincidences of their lives from childhood, WWII, businesses, travels, and associations--from England to the Rio Grande Valley. Peter and Julia worked into their 70s, traveling in the United States, Mexico, and Europe while keeping their roots at Val’s and in England. Ms. Julia hosted a book signing at Val’s Kountry Corral February 23.
The Mission Chamber of Commerce will be hosting another book signing at the Mission Historical Museum at a later date. Barnes and Noble has been in contact with Ms. Julia for a

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy by Bill Ward
The Fruits of Adventure
T
oday’s Wisdom: And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling. ~Shanti I was sitting around a table having coffee with a bunch of old guys recently when the topic of electric fences came up. It seems most of the guys have had a run in with an electric fence at some time in their younger years. I remember my own experience very well. I was ducking under a fence and didn’t quite duck low enough. I touched the wire with my shoulder blade and suddenly found myself on the ground, three feet out beyond the fence. My experience was actually quite tame compared to others’. We had some hearty laughs as the stories were told but also realized how dangerous those things were
as we heard about burns and even more serious injuries from the current. It occurred to me, as I listened, that we were sharing stories few today would relate to. I’ll bet none of my kids has ever even seen an electric fence, let alone had the experience of becoming airborne from its contact. What a loss for them, to be so shielded from life’s greatest adventures. Actually, where do today’s kids get their adventures? In the 1950s and 60s, we roamed the whole countryside and town, gathering adventures wherever we found them. There were no adults around. They must have trusted us to behave on our own. At least 80% of the time, that was appropriate. Somehow, we all made it, and none of us have done jail time.
I fear too much of t o d a y ’s a d v e n t u r e i s found in front of a video screen. I think that is a great loss. Dinosaurs Make Limited Return to Gladys Porter Zoo Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Dinosaurs are making their return
to the Gladys Porter Zoo! DINO FURY, a limited-time exhibit, will be open from March 8 through July 7 and will feature more dinosaurs than ever before. The public is invited to come and witness these prehistoric marvels before the exhibit goes extinct. Visitors will go back in time to a prehistoric world, where dinosaurs lurked around every corner and only the most ferocious survived. DINO FURY will feature dinosaurs of all sizes and ferocity levels, including the towering sauropod, Amargasaurus, whose key feature was the sharp spines on its neck, and the dreadful Dilophosaurus, one of the fiercest predators to exist, 77 million years before the terrifying Tyrannosaurus rex! Of course, this family-friendly exhibit will have fun activities for kids of all ages, including a crayon-rubbing station and the chance to come face-to-face with a T.rex for a memorable family photo.
To get the public excited about the opening of this exhibit, the Gladys Porter Zoo’s Facebook page will be posting daily dino trivia beginning Wednesday, February 28, and running until the opening of the exhibit. The first person to correctly answer each trivia question will win a family pack of passes (two adult and two child passes) to the Gladys Porter Zoo, as well as to the DINO FURY exhibit. The exhibit will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An additional cost of $5.00 will be charged at the gate or the entrance of the exhibit, located in the Special Events building. Guests will be amazed by the robotic dinosaurs “brought to life” by Billing Productions, a world leader in the design and development of animatronics for zoos, museums, and theme parks. Learning About Border Patrol by Ruth Filz, Palm Gardens RV Park Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
M
onthly, ladies from Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen head out in the Valley, looking for new places to enjoy lunch, then venturing off to visit some of the wonderful attractions the Valley and the Island have to offer. In February, the group decided to stay in the Park and invite the gentlemen to join them for a catered lunch. After lunch, Agent Rudy Rodriquez from the Border Patrol Harlingen Station met with the group to provide background on the Border Patrol, to talk about what is happening in the Valley, and to answer attendees’ questions. The Harlingen Station was established in 1925, with four officers assigned there. The Station was established in Harlingen due to its location in the heart of the farming area. Its area of responsibility encompasses 1,204 square miles and serves 37 miles of river area and 34 counties. The Station is operated by the U.S. Border Patrol, a part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It plays a critical role in securing the U.S. - Mexico border. Its jurisdiction encompasses various terrains, including urban areas, agricultural lands, and wilderness. This presents challenges and demands on the agents, even with respect to the clothing they wear and how far they can travel with vehicles. They use a combination of manpower, technology, and infrastructure in their job. Agents utilize surveillance equipment, including cameras, drones, and sensors to monitor remote areas and to detect suspicious activities. The primary mission of the Border Patrol Harlingen Station
is to secure the border against illegal crossings and smuggling of contraband--including drugs--and human trafficking. Agents are tasked with detecting, deterring, and apprehending individuals who attempt to enter the country unlawfully. In the past year, they have seen immigrants coming from over 140 countries. The agents have special phones that help them deal with the various languages they encounter. Through outreach programs, educational initiatives, and community events, agents work to create positive relationships and address concerns within the community. One of these programs is the Border Patrol Explorer Program. It is a youth development program centered on career opportunities, leadership experience, life skills, service learning, and character education. The main purpose is to educate and involve Rio Grande Valley’s youth in police operations and to interest them in a future career in law enforcement. One of the events the Border Patrol agents do for this program is sponsor career days, where they inform students about the importance of staying in school and obtaining a good education while highlighting the career opportunities of becoming a Border Patrol agent. They also inform students of the qualifications, educational background, training, S p a n i s h - l a n g u a g e p r o f i c i e n c y, ethical principles, and determination necessary to become a United States Border Patrol agent. We were happy to present Agent Rodriguez with a donation from our Activities Club to help support this initiative.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated Agent Rodriguez’ presentation and felt they left the luncheon knowing more about the Border Patrol and the role they plan
in the Valley. Although everyone enjoyed sharing lunch and the presentation with the gentlemen, I think the ladies will head out on their own for lunch in March. •
Hop on Over to Port Isabel Lighthouse Easter Egg History Hunt Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T
he Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site and the City of Port Isabel will host the 5th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of the Lighthouse Saturday, March 30. This event is free and open to the public. This year’s hunt will also include a History Hunt! One thousand red Easter eggs marked with Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site will be scattered among the other eggs. Open the egg and follow the instructions for even more prizes.
It’s a different kind of “hunt.” Over 20,000 eggs will be scattered on the hill of the Lighthouse. Participants will need to bring your own baskets and will line up on the north and south sides of Lighthouse Park. At 10 a.m., the starting line will be released and the fun begins. The Easter Bunny will also be making an appearance and posing for photos. The Keeper’s Cottage Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lighthouse will be open at 11 a.m. to
6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children. Parking is available around the Park. For more information, call 956-943-0735.
