The week-long event kicks off Sunday, October 27, 2024, with an Opening Ceremony. “It’s really cool,” says Engell. “All of the teams parade in with their flag, followed by dignitary speeches and a Hall of Fame induction. Fun-N-Sun boasts climate=controlled, indoor shuffleboard courts. The Tournament is divided into men’s and women’s divisions, with team and singles competitions. Application forms are dispensed in March, and competitors apply through their individual countries. Spectators are welcome, and admission is free. However, seating is limited. Engell looks forward to the local

shuffleboard community experiencing a high level of competition, “right in their own back yard!” The Tournament culminates at the finals, Friday, November 1. The State Vegetable o f Te x a s w a s d e v e l o p e d i n Weslaco, the name derived from the suggested planting date-October 15. The Texas Onion Fest takes place this year March 23 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in historic d o w n t o w n We s l a c o a n d i s sponsored by the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce. This free event boasts live entertainment on two stages, the Onion Eating Contest--open to all ages--food and vendor booths, rides, the Dancing Horses, the 1015 Market, culinary demonstrations starring the sweet 1015 onion, a car show, and more. McAllen Lands in Top 5 Affordable Cities to Visit in Texas Travel site ranked cities more affordable than Dallas Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

cAllen has once again landed in the top five of another state list--this time, a ranking of cities in Texas more affordable than Dallas. The ranking, compiled by the website TheTravel, looked at 10 cities and compared travel costs, including flights, hotels, and affordable entertainment options. McAllen earned the numberfour spot, while other border cities (Laredo and El Paso) were named three and two, respectively. Other cities on the list included south central communities and Dallas’ neighbors, Arlington and Fort Worth. While the cities listed are more affordable than Dallas, they are still bustling cities in their own right. In fact, according to the author of the article, many of them are hidden gems in Texas that offer wide open spaces, cultural richness, and costconscious opportunities. “McAllen is a great place to live, work, play, or visit,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.” Whether someone visits for a weekend or

decides to visit forever, McAllen will provide the best vacation or staycation, not only on a budget but on any budget.” Costs for a solo traveler for the weekend in McAllen are $379, compared to $531 in Dallas. McAllen is one of the affordable cities in Texas that makes Dallas look really expensive in comparison. Visitors can immerse themselves in the city's cultural richness with a visit to the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS), offering free admission on Sundays, where art and science converge in captivating exhibitions; or a stroll through the lush landscape of Quinta Mazatlán, a historical-mansion-turned-naturecenter, which provides affordable admission and abundant birdwatching opportunities. WHRGV Event Queen Anne Marie Martin Looks Ahead to 2024-2025

My name is Anne Marie Martin, and I

am the event manager at Welcome Home RGV. Welcome Home puts on events throughout the Winter Texan season, and we even put on events during the summer months for our Converted Texans. Our first big event is the Connection Fair for our property managers and activity directors. We bring in vendors from around the Valley to share with the park decision-makers so they can share with their residents. Our newest adventure is the Entertainers Showcase, which is put on in early January. We showcase up to 60 entertainers from all over the United States to allow the activity directors to book them for the following season. We have opened this event up to the public in hopes that you will love the entertainment and, if your favorites aren't booked at your park, you can find their shows at a park near you to enjoy. This event is definitely one you don't want to miss. Next up is the biggest event of the year, The Winter Texan Expo, held at the McAllen Convention Center. It's a must-do for all Winter Texans and local retirees. If McAllen isn't near your park,

don't worry. We will be having our 2nd Annual Winter Texan Expo in Brownsville in January 2025, and you don't want to miss all the fun at this event, either. Another fun event that has been a hit--and SOLD OUT all three years--is our Bayside Fiesta held at Louie's Backyard at the end of January. It's an entire day of music, dancing, food, drinks, and a fun time for everyone. My job doesn't stop just because the Winter Texans go home. We have a big community of Converted Texans who still love to get together and have fun all summer long. We kick off Converted Texan season with a Converted Texan Corral in April and swear everyone in as Converted Texans before dancing the afternoon away. We continue the fun throughout the summer with Summer Supper Club. We meet at a different restaurant each week for Dutch treat and fellowship. WHRGV Sales Manager Chris Leadbetter Does Much More Than Sell

O ne of the highlights of my

week is when I get to see my Winter Texan friends and Winter Texan King and Queen Daris and Judy Hable. This year at our WHRGV Winter Texan Showcase, I was able to serve these fine people by providing snacks, lots of coffee, water throughout the day, and assistance in coordinating a hectic backstage schedule. The coordination process included helping Fran Adams check people in and greet them from the theatre’s backstage entrance. I helped the artist by answering questions about what time and where to get dressed, where to keep their belongings, where their table was set up to greet people, and whatever else they wanted to know. There could be a long list of potential hiccups, so I took the entertainers’ pictures as they walked in and labeled their name and band name on the photo so I could remember all of them and know who to look for if they didn't arrive backstage when they were supposed to. (Yes, I’m still chasing musicians!)

I also attended the Winter Texan King and Queen Parade and the big event in Progreso this year. I met the Progreso mayor, his wife, and their publicity management, along with the king and queen, their Winter Texan friends, the Progreso International Bridge manager, and Dr. Elva Garcia.

Paradise Resort Estates Residents Made a Big Difference Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

It was organized and hosted by our Community Outreach Group. The results exceeded all of our hopes and expectations. Over $11,400 was raised, our best to date! These monies will be divided between five local charities: Family Ministries, St. Vincent de Paul, Women Together, the RGV Food Bank, and the Paradise Linus Project, which makes and donates over 2000 quilts each year to area schools and organizations. There was a full crew on hand in the kitchen to create a delicious spaghetti dinner with salad and French bread. Our resident bakers came through with so many choices of dessert squares that over 600 were plated and the rest were auctioned off. Our church donated all costs for the food to be prepped. Payment for a meal was a free-will donation at the door. The auction was divided into three areas: A brown-bag auction, where you buy tickets and drop them into the corresponding brown bag for the item you want to bid on; a silent auction, which allows you to outbid your friend and neighbor on paper; and a live auction, with our resident retired auctioneer. So exciting!

Another fun part of being a Winter Texan is all the local Texas traveling you can do. Texas is full of American history. With so many unique cities, offering extremely different types of cultures and stories, there’s always something new to learn. From San Antonio to Corpus Christi or Galveston to Fredericksburg, there are so many fun places to visit here in Texas. Every city has its own festivals, traditions, and sites to see. Let's go see them! Overnight trips, day trips, and holiday trips are all great options to see Texas while you’re with us during the winter months. This season, Welcome Home rented a private baseball suite at Whataburger field in Corpus Christi, took a trip to Galveston for the Dickens on the Strand Holiday Festival, toured the historical missions in San Antonio, and thought about going to Mars with SpaceX. And this is just naming a few of our adventures. What’s great about doing one of these tours with us? Traveling

in a group gives unique, private experiences, and tours are catered to Winter Texans. No driving, no parking, no planning required. We have you covered on all fronts. Just get on that bus and be ready for fun! “These tours are definitely worth the money, always well-organized, and Sarah finds unique experiences I wouldn’t have found on my own,” said one repeat traveler. With our bus trips, you don’t have to wait to get to the destination for the fun to begin. “Games, movies, and meeting new friends on the bus made the entire trip so fun!” said another WHRGV traveler. That’s one thing that sets our overnight trips above others. I am with you the entire time, getting to know you and making sure everyone is comfortable the entire trip. “Sarah thinks of everything and really takes care of you from pick up to drop off. s many of you hit the road, headed home for the summer, I have a few tips on places you may not have visited along the way. If you find yourself driving through Waco, you might be headed toward the Silos for some home-decor shopping or a pastry at the Magnolia Bakery. Right down the street is a fun little museum, a perfect stop to break up your day and stretch your legs--the Dr Pepper Museum. Did you know Dr Pepper started right here in Texas in 1885? Take the tour that ends with a fresh-from-the-tap Dr Pepper sample. If you’re headed North on I-35, make sure to stop at the Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center in Davis, Oklahoma. Not only do they have a nice lobby and gift shop, with clean bathrooms, but don’t skip the chocolate shop! Bedre chocolate is home to delicious treats and some unique tastes. My kids love the chocolate-covered pringles and bugles, while my husband loves the dipped Oreos. If you find yourself driving through Kansas City, Kansas, please stop at my hometown BBQ. Joe’s of Kansas City will not disappoint. The Z-man sandwich is an absolute must! Delicious brisket, a slice of provolone cheese, and a huge homemade onion ring--with their famous BBQ sauce on top. Don’t just take my word for it. The champions themselves, the Kansas City Chiefs, enjoy the delicious sandwich regularly. You can find Joe’s off I-35 in Olathe, Kansas.

The first pitch will be thrown at 9:30 a.m. this Friday, March 8, at McAllen’s Westside Park, 1000 S. Ware Rd., directly across from the McAllen Convention Center. Gates open at 9 a.m. Admission is free. Parking is free, and all refreshments are only $1. Everyone is welcome. Come out and cheer these senior ballplayers on. story is told of a young boy named Michael who walked to school the same route every day. The little boy knew the neighbors, and his parents were comfortable with their son visiting the neighbors on his way to school. One of his favorite neighbors was a man named Mr. Davidson. Mr. Davidson was an artist. His yard was a place where new pieces of art were put on display for all. One morning, Michael noticed there was a large block of rock the size of a motorcycle in Mr. Davidson’s yard. He thought little of it and cheerfully continued to school. When he returned that afternoon, he saw Mr. Davidson walking around the large rock. The old man would take a few steps and study the rock from different angles. Michael noticed that Mr. Davidson was holding a hammer and chisel. He soon began to chisel the edge of the rock. He would pause, study, and chisel some more. Michael watched for about 10 minutes and then hurried home for afternoon snacks and playtime. The next morning, Michael noticed that the large block of rock had some of the edges rounded off. He waved and said, “Hello, Mr. Davidson. That sure is a big rock, and it is neat-looking with all those lines and sparkles.” “Yes, it is, Michael. It’s granite,” said Mr. Davidson. Michael asked, “What are you going to make?” Mr. Davidson replied, “I don’t know yet because I haven’t seen what’s inside.” Michael wasn’t sure what Mr. Davidson meant by that, so he waved goodbye and hurried off to school. When Michael returned, he saw more of the rock chiseled away, but

Mr. Davidson wasn’t there. Michael shrugged his shoulders and went home. In the following days, Michael saw more and more progress being made on the rock. He didn’t see much of Mr. Davidson, though, because the artist seemed to work on the project when Michael wasn’t around. Michael did notice, however, that the rock began to look like some kind of animal. He was excited about more progress, but he and his parents were leaving for the week to visit his grandparents. Michael returned a week later. He ran to see the rock. When he arrived at Mr. Davidson’s yard, Michael didn’t see the rock. Instead, he saw a majestic, proud lion. The rock was transformed. Its eyes sparkled. The lines in the rock seemed to accentuate the muscles and kingly mane of the lion. The lion stood strong and proud, guarding the yard of Mr. Davidson. Michael was amazed and asked, “Mr. Davidson, how did you know there was a lion in that rock?” Mr. Davidson answered, “Well, I didn’t know until I began to work on it and let the best parts of it reveal themselves to me. I took off the parts that shouldn’t be there. That is kind of what God does with you and me, Michael. He works on us. He develops the good in us and removes the bad stuff. I hope you learn that someday.” In Philippians 1: 6, Paul writes, “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” I pray that you will know the saving grace of Jesus Christ,and He will be working on you. Gilberto Castro Jr., Eliseo Ortega to Perform in Pharr March 9-10

Company (PCT) continues to showcase local talent in various forms of art. Next on stage will be 18-year-old Gilberto Castro Jr. with his electric guitar, singing original songs and covers in the blues and rock genre. “I would say it’s been a long time since someone has seen an Elvis Presley or, in other words, someone who sings and moves like Elvis. Well, I do. I sing and I move pretty darn good, if I don’t say so myself,” Castro says, laughing. “I move and dance and sing at the same time. I play guitar …and if you’re into blues and old-fashioned Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, BB King, Buddy Guy, and Howlin Wolf, then you’re gonna love me. It’s the type of music I make and love.” Long-time RGV theater director and producer Pedro Garcia said he’s worked with Castro since he was 12, acting in several theatre plays. “Gilberto has always had a calmness

to his persona, and, when on stage, he drives a strong performance. Whether acting or singing, he lights up and still manages that charisma he has.”

Castro, a college student at Our Lady of the Lake University, is semi-new to singing in public and continues to hone his style. “I feel

it in my bones when the crowd gets up and dances and moves and really just gets excited. Recording music is one thing and seeing me live is a whole different thing, a different adventure …a different sight. It’s crazy when I’m on stage. I don’t see nothing else; I just focus on the music and make sure everyone has a good time,” Castro said. The opening act is a completely different style, said Garcia. Another youngster, 19-year-old Eliseo Ortega, who was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was involved in theatre and music; he moved to the RGV in January 2024. “I got into music in the fourth grade when a school music director at the time, Kai Simone, was looking for children to perform as singers,” Ortega said. “At the time, I thought it was a joke, and when I sang the

ABCs for her in the classroom, as an audition, she liked my voice and invited me to participate in afterschool training and programs for singing. Soon, I started performing on-stage musicals for our school, and I loved the feeling and the enjoyment I saw in other people’s faces. I was hooked.” Currently, Eliseo likes singing mostly hip hop, jazz, pop, and softer rock.

“Our show will be phenomenal. We have two great voices,” Ortega said. “I hear Gilberto and I think, ‘He’s fantastic and has a unique style.’ We both sing differently--me a softer tone, him a raspy sound, a real good sound. He has an amazing talent, and I think it’s something to see. He’s different and very unique, something you don’t hear often from someone. I really think

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

WOW! It’s March already!

The time has flown by. We have had so much fun (“yarn fun”) with all of our Winter Texan friends this year. Thank you all for spending a little of your season with us. Our Sitn-Knit spaces were kept busy this year, and we all totally enjoyed all the show-n-tell and chit-chatting. As this season for y’all winds down, we wish you all safe travels home. We hope you know how much you are appreciated. South Texas is a better place because of how much you pour of yourselves into this little corner of the world. We know how much you give and volunteer here at The Lamb’s Loom, and we hear of so many ways you and your parks help and support. It is just a-ma-zing! At The Lamb’s Loom, we are grateful for all of our Winter Texan friends yearround. Many of you volunteer here during the “winter” and then work up handmade items for our Donation Chest all year. Whether you bring them here with you the next season or mail them during the year, we know they all bless and encourage another person, give a hug where it is needed, and put a smile on people’s faces and in their hearts. For those who give financially every month, thank you so very much for your ongoing support. This year, we saw a lot of new faces coming in the door, too. To all of our new friends who found us this year, what a blessing to meet you all! We hope you will put us on your calendar of field trips for next year. To e a c h o f y o u , a v e r y special thank you from all of the mission groups we work with. In 2023, over 5500 handmade items were sent across the world. In total, 24 groups and many individuals were served in 2023, from South Texas to mission groups in several states across Mexico and to groups here in the U.S., too.

Additionally, we added another clinic to our Knitted Knocker list. Because of the many Winter Texan friends who have joined us with this mission to stitch it forward, we have been able to add to the list of those who are served. Thank you! We a r e b l e s s e d a n d l o v e to share the stories of the encouragement given to someone in the form of a shawl, the comfort to a family with warm hats, and the joy for a sweet child with a new blanket.
