Lerma shared with the audience the difficulty faced in coordinating and surprising Adams with the award, citing excuses from Adams about being “very busy”—a true statement. Adams is very involved in Trophy Garden activities, in addition to working with Welcome Home RGV. Currently, she coordinates talent acts for various annual events,
including the Bayside Fiesta, the Entertainers Showcase, and the Winter Texan Expo. Adams was chosen, Lerma says, f o r h e r i n v o l v e m e n t i n A l a m o ’s Texas Independence Day Parade (coming up March 2) and making connections between the Chamber and Resort management. Resort manager Dan Rockwood likened Adams to the “Godfather” of Trophy Gardens. “After about a week of interactions w i t h h e r, ” R o c k w o o d s a i d .

Lakewood RV Resort Honors Veterans With Quilts of Valor Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
L
akewood RV Resort in Harlingen recently honored some of the Resort’s numerous veterans with Quilts of Valor. Ann Register started this annual event at Lakewood last year, and residents plan to honor approximately 10 veterans at the Resort annually. The Quilt of Valor® Foundation honors the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces and our veterans. In 2003, founder Catherine Roberts created the concepts that exemplify the Foundation’s mission: “To cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. These Lakewood veterans were honored at the event: Mary Halvorson, Ray Simon, Don Sowers, Gary Krzmarzick, David Leonard, and Timothy Mathis. Three other Lakewood veterans were honored at their homes. They are Del Lieberg, Larry Boarts, and Kirby Vickerty.
A special thank you goes out to Ann Register for bringing this event to Lakewood, to everyone who helped her in any way, to all who attended, and especially to all of the men and women serving our country and all veterans. •

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy by Bill Ward
A Walk Through History
T
o d a y ’s Wi s d o m : L o s i n g m y homies in a hurry, they're relocating to the cemetery. ~Tupac Shakur Much like many of you, I grew up in a small town and still live in a different small town. One gets to know a lot of people, especially all those people who get out in public a lot. Each of those towns has a big cemetery that tends to collect most of the citizens at one time or another. I do a lot of writing and research for my local historical society, often finding myself in the local cemetery on a quest. Believe it or not, I actually find those excursions enjoyable. I don’t have any particular thing for walking among the dead, but I do find the pathway among the stones to be fascinating. Those stones read
almost like a history text of the community life of a generation or two ago. There are all the businessmen, some with names still on buildings downtown. There are all the farmers who frequented the town on Friday nights and filled the cafés after a run to town for feed or parts. There are my old school teachers and many of the church leaders and Sunday School teachers. One almost has to resist the temptation to stop and say hello. I know; that would be weird. This might sound odd, but if you’ve lived in a small town for a long time and are bored some evening, why not head out to your cemetery for a stroll through time. You might encounter some good memories and good stories as you stumble upon the gravestones of folks you used to hang out with. Take a friend along so you have
someone to listen to your stories. Don’t worry about ghosts. Most cemeteries aren’t haunted. Trust me, I once wrote a book about it. (Well, a few are, but the ghosts don’t really bother much.) I’m happy I have become comfortable wandering around in a cemetery. I actually own land there, so it is good to check out the property from time to time. My land is just a few feet from the town banker and right next to the church secretary. It is a pretty good neighborhood. I’m just sayin’. •

Help Keep Mabel’s Legacy Alive Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The Mabel Foundation was started by Mabel Clare Proudly circa 1967 after Hurricane Beulah hit the area around Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. Mabel studied piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music and then played violin in the Rome Symphony Orchestra. After a helicopter crash injured the tendons in her hands, which prevented her from playing the violin, she came to the Rio Grande Valley in 1959. She helped build houses for the people of Nuevo Progreso. If you go through the town, you can see several of her homes. Mabel also helped provide education to the youth of the town. Children in Mexico go to school for free up to the sixth grade. After that, they are required to pay for their own education. In the mid-80s, Mabel selected Merle and Darlene Lenz to help her run the program, which they did until Merle's passing in 2014. Merle and Darlene worked with Dr. Eva Lilla Garcia Cantu, who had worked with Mabel for many years. She helped them build the education part of the foundation that became the Mexican Children's Refuge. Dr. Eva continues to play an important role in the Mabel Foundation, and her assistance allowed the group to grow. Merle was a well-known figure in the colonias, often seen driving his big maroon van up and down the
streets of Nuevo Progreso. After Merle's passing, the program had few changes in leadership. Jerry and Sue Machetta took over the program around 2016 and tried for a few years to get Ken and Dianne Coyne involved. (Dianne is Merle and Darlene's daughter). Ken and Dianne started helping in 2021, and finally took over in 2022. The main goal of the Mexican Children's Refuge is to help children continue their education. We look for individual sponsors and businesses to help in our goal. The education costs are: $170 per year for Secondary (middle school) and $310 per year for Preparatory (high school) and University. Students are required to maintain a certain grade-point average; failure to meet the guidelines can result in being dismissed from the program. If the students maintain a perfect score, they are given a small monetary gift for the grade ($10 U.S.) Currently around 170 students are sponsored by our program. The Mabel Foundation also provides a free clinic in Nuevo Progreso. Merle and several other Winter Texans built the free clinic in town. The clinic also provides eye care for residents. The clinic had been closed recently due to lack of funding but is now up and operational. This part of our group is being directed by Oscar Jones.
The clinic is now open three days a week and has recently added a new pediatrician. How can you help? The Mabel Foundation is always looking for groups and individuals to sponsor students. The Foundation has had some sponsors who have chosen to sponsor students throughout their educational experience. Sponsors can also meet their student(s) and correspond with them via email. Monetary donation that provide food, clothing, and health needs are a great help, as well. The Mabel Foundation also collects food, clothing, and medical supplies to help the students and their families have a better life. and his wife, Gayle, have been on the Rec Council for Palm Resaca Park Brownsville for the past eight years. Both Don and Gayle demonstrate strong communication skills and show leadership in organizing activities and events, which contribute to the overall quality of life for the senior residents in our Park. All Rec Council members serve on a completely volunteer basis, so we are fortunate to get highly qualified people who want to serve on these committees. “Nobody understands how much hard work is involved in organizing all these activities,” said past Rec Council president Roe Abschire Jr. “Don has always been an excellent leader, and Gayle just doesn’t stop.” Don has been the president of the Rec Council for the last two years. “During my time on
the Council, I have been very pleased with the improvements made in the Park,” Don said. “The kitchen and the Thomas Center have been upgraded. We have organized tournaments for our pickleball and shuffle courts. We have put benches around and organized a lot of different activities for the residents. At Christmas, we have a Lighted Golf Cart Parade, and we get many members participating.” Other activities that have occurred include Wednesday morning Park breakfasts, patio parties, and Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, all of which are open to every resident. Both Don and Gayle have been overwhelmed by the number of people willing to step forward and volunteer their time to make sure these events run successfully. “ I t ’s b e e n a l o t o f f u n , ” acknowledged Don. “I’ve met a lot of interesting people during my tenure on the board.”
“Don is a good-hearted guy,” said Park president Jon Moulton. He is a hard worker and has the best interests of the Park in mind when he does things.” Gayle and Don make a great team. “Gayle will remind me about things that need to be done, and she is always at my side or leading the way when some things need to be done,” Don shared. Gayle said she has been interested in cooking and had been in the restaurant business for many years. Her parents ran a diner at the Minnesota State Fair. “As soon as I was old enough to count, I worked there,” she said. Gayle took over the responsibility of running the kitchen in our Park when another lady decided it
was time for her to retire. She is very modest about how important she has been in making sure our kitchen runs smoothly, but her presence and work ethic set an excellent example for others to follow. “It involves a lot of hard work and organizational skills to keep the kitchen running,” she said, “but I have enjoyed the camaraderie and meeting new people. We never seem to run out of volunteers to help out. It’s been awesome!” Both Don and Gayle went to North St. Paul High School in Minnesota. Gayle has been coming to Brownsville for 37 years. After her parents retired to this area, she would come down to visit them on a regular basis. “It was Don’s idea to buy a place in Brownsville, and we chose Palm Resaca Park because we loved the people and how clean the Park is.” “Both Don and Gayle are super people,” Roe added. “They have been a wonderful addition to our park. They are a real dynamic duo and have done great things for our little community.” •

McAllen International Airport Announces New Nonstop Service to Tampa, St. Petersburg Florida Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
McAllen International Airport has
announced its newest nonstop route to Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida. Starting in June 2024, Allegiant will conveniently connect McAllen with Tampa/St. Petersburg, a top U.S. tourist destination with over 35 miles of award-winning beaches, the world-renowned Salvador Dali Museum, top-rated beach-front dining, and endless leisure opportunities at the 26-acre St. Pete Pier. “This new Allegiant route is just another win for McAllen and our entire region,” said Javier Villalobos, McAllen mayor. “We are proud to see that our airline partners have confidence in our market and continue to choose McAllen International Airport for expansion. We also look forward to welcoming visitors from Florida to experience everything that McAllen has to offer as a two-time International Festival and Event destination city.”
Allegiant has opened ticket sales, starting at $59, for nonstop service from McAllen International Airport (MFE) to Tampa/St. Petersburg (PIE) beginning June 14, 2024. Allegiant also currently operates nonstop routes from McAllen International Airport to Las Vegas, Orlando, and Los Angeles. McAllen City Manager Roel "Roy" Rodriguez, P.E. said, “McAllen is the epicenter of the Rio Grande Valley and is striving to provide our region with the absolute best in connectivity. With three new nonstop air service announcements in 2024, the McAllen International Airport has gone above and beyond to connect our community to new travel opportunities and to improve our overall quality of life.” As one of the top-10 busiest airports in Texas, McAllen International Airport's commercial airline traffic has led the region in 2023 with 45% of the RGV’s commercial air service
market share. This historic year totaled over 964,000 annual passengers. Night of Ideas in McAllen: Music, Literature, and Sports Experts Lead Nocturnal Marathon of Art, Talks, and Performances Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

de América Latina - IFAL, the Consulates General of France in Houston and Monterrey, the McAllen Public Library, and the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) have announced the full program for McAllen’s 2024 Night of Ideas Saturday, M a r c h 2 . V i l l a A l b e r t i n e ’s annual marathon of philosophical debates, performances, readings, and more, invites experts and the public to engage together in late-night discussions addressing major global issues. This year, Night of Ideas returns across 20 U.S. cities. Leading thinkers, scientists, novelists, activists, and artists will engage with the theme “Outside the Lines,” centering on urban life and development and raising questions about the impact of climate change, new technologies, gentrification, and social and cultural activism. In McAllen, Night of Ideas kicks off Saturday, March 2, at IMAS, 1900 W. Nolana Avenue and the McAllen Public Library, 4001 N. 23rd St., with experts and artists from border towns, the Latin-American diaspora, and France. “The City of McAllen is proud to host an international event that looks at different issues across our country, with the ultimate goal to not only understand the unique aspects of our community but also to celebrate them,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “As an international city, we continue to expand our horizons and set our sights on new neighbors and communities around the world and welcome Villa Albertine, Instituto Francés de América Latina, the French Consulates General of Houston and Monterrey, and our entire Rio Grande Valley region to be a part of this special night.” The event will begin at 3 p.m. at IMAS and continue from 5 to 9 p.m. at the McAllen Public Library, tackling the theme of "Borderlands," with the aim to reveal the complexities and strengths of border communities. Questions that will be explored include: What stories lie beneath the surface of the border? How do individuals navigate the intersections of culture, language, and heritage? In what ways can arts and sports encourage community bonding? The borderlands are home to many narratives that will be explored throughout the night. Through a lineup featuring talks, art exhibits, and performances (poetry readings, dance, music, virtual reality, drawing), Night of Ideas will bring together diverse voices, perspectives, and disciplines. The McAllen community will be able to engage in discussions about dual identities, the loss and reappropriation of the Mexican culture, and the cultural impact of iconic figures like Selena and basketball star Jesus "Chuy" Guerra. Audiences will also have the opportunity to take a scientific journey through geology and space, as well as explore issues around urban development and literature at the border. Villa Albertine is a cultural institution with the mission of deepening cultural connections between the United States and the French-speaking world through a shared exploration of arts and ideas. With hubs in 10 U.S. cities, Villa Albertine’s national programs, like Night of Ideas, make up one of the organization’s core pillars. The other three pillars are exploratory, bespoke artist residencies in multiple cities across the U.S.; grants and professional programs; and the annual bookazine States.

Why Did That Happen to Me? By Paula Key, chaplain’s wife
We were on the mission field
ministering in the Peten Jungles of Guatemala. Our house was made of cement block and had a good roof, which was so much better than the thatch hut I was expecting. Thank God! I had the nicest house our side of the Passion River! We arrived there on a 40-foot-long dugout canoe with an outboard motor and all our worldly possessions. We were cruising in style. There were no roads anywhere around us within four hours. That meant no clothing stores, no restaurants, no H-E-Bs, no Walmarts, and no hardware stores. We were living a true adventure. Being a native Texan from Houston, I was a city girl who had been traumatized by living with cockroaches all my life, and now I found myself living in the jungle--in a rainforest—surrounded by an innumerable host of spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, howler monkeys, jaguars, iguanas, crocodiles…you name it. I can attest to the fact that God’s grace is sufficient, and my surroundings gave it a run for its money! I had a weekly ladies’ Bible study in the village upriver from us called Buena Fe (Good Faith). The only way to reach it was by using our little flat-bottomed boat with an outboard pull motor. One of the Bible study days, none of the guys were available to take me. So, I thought, “I can
drive that boat!” So I did, and it was the best Bible study I had ever done! God really blessed it. When it was time to go home, we got into the boat, and I began to start the motor. I tried and tried to crank it to no avail. I was not the pleasantly plump woman I am today; I only weighed 110 pounds with not very much muscle power. So I stood up in the boat, cranked real hard, and off the boat went, throwing me overboard--backwards. I had taken it out of neutral and put it in high-gear forward! As I came up to the top of the water, there was my six-year-old in the boat going around in circles with a full tank of gas. I thought, “I’ve got to do something!” I started swimming toward the boat and had hopes of getting one leg over the side and into the boat to regain control of the boat and the situation. Bad idea. At the last moment, I realized the boat was going way too fast, so I dove downward to miss it. I wasn’t too successful and wound up with the boat running over me, the motor shaft breaking two of my ribs and the propeller slicing my arm and grabbing the skirt I was wearing. And yet the motor was still running as I was pulled toward it, facing the back of the boat. I couldn’t get away from it! When you are in a situation like that, you don’t always think so clearly, so there I was yelling out to my daughter, “Turn it off! Turn it off!” She tried several

different things before she finally got it turned off. What a relief! About then, some villagers saw my plight and came to our rescue. They cut my skirt off (Glad I was wearing a slip!) and pulled me up into their boat and took us back to the village. All the precious village ladies took care of me and gave me some clothes to wear back home. Why did this happen to me? I was doing God’s will--and not in the easiest place to live. Why this? Well, I found out why when I went to the next Sunday’s service at Buena Fe. All of the people in the village came out to the service to see the lady who defied death and was there to talk about God’s saving grace! Come to find out, two weeks earlier, a man from their village had the same type of accident I had and did not live to tell about it. God not only gave us an open door to the entire village but also healed my broken ribs in one week instead of the usual 4-6 weeks. God wanted to show off His stuff, and He did!
