S i n c e t h e n , R a z z - M a - Ta z z h a s performed at RV parks from La Joya to Brownsville. “We love going out there,” says current choir director Josh Watkins. “The parks love having us.” The encounters with Winter Texans are one of past Razz-Ma-Tazz performer Emily Gonzalez’ fondest memories. “They were super sweet. It was almost like having a million grandparents!” The Razz-Ma-Tazz performance calendar primarily begins after Thanksgiving.

The show runs about one hour. Holiday or winter-themed songs are a tradition, with students creating the script that ties the songs together. “We put a lot of time and effort into really refining the show,” says Watkins. “We forget they are high school kids. We treat them like professionals; they rise and meet the occasion.” Tanner adds, “There’s not another program like it in the Valley.” •

Palm Resaca Arts, Crafts Show March 2 by Ace Moore, Winter Texan at Palm Resaca Park Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Palm Resaca Park in Brownsville

will be having its annual Arts and Crafts Show Saturday, March 2, from 1 - 4 p.m. Admission will be free. Over a dozen exhibitors and vendors will be participating. There will be a wide range of arts and crafts, including painting with watercolors, pastels, and acrylics. There will also be fiber art, quilts, jewelry making, art made from seashells, wood carvings, and intarsia (a form of wood inlaying). One of the presenters is Saskatchewan’s Lori Bradford. She is a mixed-media artist and has been doing this all her life. “Creating something is as necessary to me as breathing,” she explained. “I just can’t quit.” No matter what she does, color is the most important part of her art. She loves bright, vibrant colors. Lori has taught art classes in the Park for over 10 years. Now that she is semi-retired, she encourages other “creatives” to share their knowledge. Don Jacobsen uses intarsia to make his creations. He started out doing general wood carvings with a scroll saw; two years ago, he became interested in intarsia and found that he really enjoyed it. Last year, he had 40 pieces of art on display and sold out. His creations are quite amazing. In fact, for his efforts, he was declared Best in Show. “Once I get into something, I’m hooked,” he said. “It keeps me thinking, keeps me moving--mind and hands. I’ll do this until I find something else to do.” His projects have become increasingly larger. His last effort had 825 pieces and 25 animals in it. Don’s wife, Gayle, is amazed at how much Don puts into his work. “He spends four to five hours a day doing this,” she shared. “It’s like a full-time job! I would never have that kind of patience.” Doug Avram and his wife, Lynda, from Aylmer, Ontario, are the coordinators of the Arts a n d C r a f t s S h o w. D o u g i s a prolific artist and an amazing painter. He could easily have his own show. He specializes in watercolors and acrylics. “ Wa t e r c o l o r i s a n a b s o l u t e l y demanding, challenging, and

fascinating medium,” he said. Doug is completely eclectic in his choice of subjects. They range from flowers to sailboats. Right now, he is fascinated with rodeo events and is into horses and riders. “I will look at a scene, and if it speaks to me, I will paint it,” he said. Doug has been painting for as long as he can remember. “It’s something I have to do,” he explained. He will work for hours at a time and likes to have music in the background so he doesn’t get distracted by other environmental sounds. “I have to be totally immersed in my work.” D o u g ’s m o t h e r w a s a l s o a n artist. She could make pictures u s i n g a t y p e w r i t e r. “ I w a s absolutely amazed at what she could put out,” he shared. Doug is going to lead two art classes in our Park, one for “fantasy fishes” and the other for beach-scene landscapes. It is incredible, the number of people in our Park who are into Arts and Crafts. This Show will give many of them a chance to showcase their talents and for us to be amazed at what our residents are capable of producing. Take a few minutes of your time March 2 and visit our Park. You will be surprisingly impressed with what our residents can produce. •

The prize? Bragging rights, of course, but also to have their country proudly engraved as the 2024 winner on the beautiful Can-Am trophy donated by the City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department. Admission is free. Parking is free. Refreshments are only $1. In addition, free door prize tickets will also be handed out. These tickets will be drawn between innings so lucky fans can also win food prizes and more. Bleacher seating is available, or you may bring your own lawn chair. Spectators can choose one of our USA or Canada flags so you can cheer-and wave--your respective team on to victory. When it comes to human perceptions of our broader natural landscape, it may seem that it is immutable and unchanging. “We like to say the ancient landscape is ‘hiding in plain sight.’ You just must know where to look and what to look for.” – Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Residents and visitors of the Rio Grande Valley may step over millions of years of history that included volcanic eruptions, 27-million-year-old petrified logs, 42-million-year-old giant oyster shells, and projectile points used by humans for over 12,000 years. Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight illuminates the unique landscape and helps curious minds understand the natural processes that formed South Texas.
