“I might only have 10 good years left,” he warned Cheryl. “I’ll take the 10 years,’’ she recalls telling Don. “There are no guarantees. I knew what I was walking into.” Those first 10 years of marriage have turned into nearly 50, and Don and Cheryl have settled year-round at Sun Valley Village in Harlingen. The health issues Don made Cheryl aware of decades ago did progressively worsen. He took full disability status at 55 after years of employment with a Volkswagen auto plant in Troy, Michigan. Now nearly 87, Don is also afflicted with dementia. Just as she promised when they married, Cheryl remains by Don’s side, caring for him around the clock as their beloved dog, Bonnie, serves as a trusty companion.
Va l e n t i n e ’s D a y i s w h e n spouses and lovers express their affections with greetings and gifts. Longstanding love--beyond yearly gift-giving--can be seen in its truest form when one spouse cares for another, unconditionally, in the face of daily hardships. It’s the kind of love that’s apparent when visiting Don and Cheryl Matthews. “He’s my soulmate, definitely,” Cheryl says of her husband, the tears coming with the words. “He’s like that old Timex watch that takes a licking but keeps on ticking. I’m going to keep him moving and with me for as long as I can.” Keep Moving Don’s resiliency through the years has often amazed Cheryl. She saw her husband promoted from being a draftsman to a senior designer and electrical designer with Volkswagen.

Physical diminishment progressed through the years, but he made due as best he could, doing what it took to get things done, whenever possible. Cheryl recalled when her husband would put keys in his mouth to separate them individually when he no longer could do so with his fingers. Don took on new challenges early in their marriage, before physical issues worsened. He learned how to fly planes and got a pilot’s license with waivers defining what he could do. Cheryl recalled how Don being a pilot inspired children suffering from muscular degeneration, seeing someone with similar conditions taking to the skies. “He was such a fighter,” Cheryl said. “Don had this disability, but he would wear me into the ground. He was so active.” That resiliency continues to the present. Cheryl is taking her husband on a mid-February cruise, in line with her philosophy to stay active. Being on cruises, she says, revives Don, and he becomes more talkative and his senses are sharpened and come alive. “It really perks him up,” Cheryl says of Don when on cruises. “I keep him moving.” The Girl For Me Diane and James Coulter live
just down the street from the Matthewses at Sun Valley Village. The Coulters are natives of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. With over 30 years of marriage, they share a love of travel and being independent while being together. “Even though you’re together, you’re still two individual people,” Diane says. Her husband agrees, saying, “It’s good to have some quiet time by yourself.” That being said, the Coulters have travelled the world together, enjoying multiple cruises, with one especially notable trip abroad when James proposed to Diane in Australia. They have been coming to the Rio Grande Valley since 1988 to spend the winter months, first to Donna and then to Harlingen in 2013. Diane has served on a volunteer basis as Sun Valley’s activities director. On this Valentine’s Day week, they advocate being good listeners as an important element of any marriage and the value of being good and steady savers of money to build up the resources that can lead to a retirement where independent thinkers can enjoy what has been earned. “We tend to do more things together now,” James said. “I knew back all of those years ago that she was the girl for me.’’ •

What is More Comforting Than a Quilt? Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
One of the ways the Rio Grande
Va l l e y Q u i l t G u i l d m e m b e r s share their love of quilting is by providing military quilts for resident veterans in the Rio Grande Valley. During the Winter Texan season, the Guild has about 300 members. It is during this time that the Guild sponsors Military Sew events in several parks in the Valley to bring volunteers together to sew and assemble the quilts. January 12, Trophy Gardens RV Park in Alamo sponsored a RGV Quilt Guild Military Sew. Volunteers from Trophy Gardens and Guild members and volunteers from several other parks arrived to spend the day constructing and bundling quilts to be sent to a longarm quilter for completion. There were 42 volunteers in attendance. The volunteers who came for the day represented six additional parks besides Trophy Gardens. At noon, the group came together for a light luncheon before heading back to work.
The luncheon, prepared by volunteers, was made possible by the generous donations from local food stores. A huge thank you goes out to Junior’s Supermarket in San Juan, H-E-B in Alamo, and Walmart in Alamo. Their donations were greatly appreciated by the Guild members and the volunteers. At the end of the day, 22 quilts were bundled (matching the quilt top, batting and quilt bottom together), 10 additional quilt tops were completed, and a lot of quilt blocks were finished. It was truly a very successful day! This year, the Guild will be presenting quilts to Veterans during the RGV Quilt Show held on South Padre Island. Veterans are presented to the Guild through a nomination process. To qualify
to receive a quilt for military service, the nominee must be a year-round resident of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Guild is looking forward to continuing this work and providing even more quilts through this program in the future. •

ne of the many things people notice as they drive through McAllen is that the water towers throughout the city are painted with the logos of educational institutions, from the three comprehensive high schools in McAllen ISD to South Texas College, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Texas A&M University. According to City Commissioner Tony Aguirre, the City of McAllen made this decision because education is critical to a vibrant community. The sun rises beautifully in the background of the James Nikki Rowe High School water tower on Dove Avenue, just west of 23rd Street in McAllen. For those wondering why the water towers are different
sizes, Commissioner Aguirre put on his former-McAllen-Public-Utilities-trustee hat to respond. “The amount of water in each tank depends on the engineered hydraulic assessment of the volume of water needed within that service area.” •

Pharr South Hosts Line Dance Bash Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
I f you’ve never been to a line
dance bash, you don’t know what you’re missing. Just ask all of the folks who attended the 2nd Annual Pharr South Line Dance Bash January 28 from noon to 4:30 p.m. (Now that’s a lot of line dancin’!) So how, exactly, does a line dance bash work?
At Pharr South, they rounded up seven line-dance instructors who have been teaching those fancy moves anywhere from four to 30 years: Pat Yoder, owner and full-time resident at Pharr South;
Donna Hucker from Alamo Country Club; Bob McFarlane from Victoria Palms; Keith Floyd from Casa del Valle; JoAnne Sullivan from Winter Ranch; Julie Johnson from Tropic Star; and Ginger Akuna from Bit-O-Heaven. In addition to instructing, Yoder also served as event coordinator. Then they rounded up door prizes and planned a taco-salad lunch. Next, they found plenty of Winter Texans, Converted Texans, and plain ol’ Texans and asked them to do what they do as well as they line dance—volunteer. The Pharr South Line Dance Bash had, in addition to the seven
volunteer instructors, volunteer cashiers, greeters, cooks, and setup and cleanup crews. Even the DJ volunteered. Picture a dance floor large enough for 110 dancers--from at least 10 RV parks and resorts across the Valley--to show how they can shimmy, scoot, turn, and boogie, all while having the time of their lives. Beginners were on one end, and “high beginners” on the other. Those in between were like dancers you might see on Line Dancin’ with the Stars. They came decked out in everything from shorts, t-shirts, and baseball caps to skirts, cowboy hats, and cowboy boots. Each instructor taught two dances. The most popular line dance of the day appeared to be the Cheeseburger, a circle dance with four dancers in each circle. As the music played, the dancers took steps forward and backward and even made some turns, all while remaining in a circle. After 39 dances, the Pharr South Line Dance Bash ended… but the smiles didn’t. •

Meet Addie Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
We would love for y’all to meet our
dear friend, Addie! A few years ago, Addie came over to “check us out,” and we passed with flying colors! We shared with her about our Donation Chest, filled with handmade items. We also told her about the different mission groups we give the items to and that they go all over the world. She took all of the information back to her group and suggested they begin making things to add to the chest. Well, Addie and her friends from Brookridge have been adding to our Donation Chest for years now. It is always a treat when they come over for a visit. Addie sets a date, invites her friends, and they all load in their bus and drive on over. The bus is filled with boxes of hats, beautiful baby blankets, layettes, and more. We are always so very grateful and overwhelmed with all of the handmade gifts. Makes for a very fun and blessed afternoon around here when they visit! On their last visit, Addie asked if
we would teach a few of her friends how to loom knit hats for the chest. We gathered the looms and some donated yarn, and they all got right to it, looping and laughing all the way around the loom. Addie, and her determination, are an inspiration to us all to stay active and keep stitching it forward every day. Blessings, Addie! Kansas Day Celebration 2024: A Grand Event Date set for 2025 celebration Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan January 24, 140 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. (What was super special was that 22 Kansans joined
the group for their first time. Yea!) This year’s event took place at Balli’s Social Event Center in Mission in the Krysta Room. The organizers much appreciated that all tables and chairs were set up by the host. The tables were decorated according to the organizers’ wishes. An American Valentine Story

Dan O’Connell first met his future wouldn’t marry until he finished
wife, Kathy, in 1952 in the town of La Grange, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Dan’s family lived two blocks from Kathy’s house. One day, when he was 11, he was climbing a tree near Kathy’s house, and he saw her come out the door. “It was the first time I had taken notice of a girl,” he said. “And I was smitten!” During his junior year in high school, Dan wanted to invite Kathy out on a date, so he walked for a mile in the rain one night to call her on a pay phone. (He didn’t want his brothers to hear him talking on the communal family phone and kid him about it.) For some reason, when Kathy answered the phone, she wasn’t able to talk to Dan and hung up. Dan felt rejected, and they never got together. Kathy eventually married a Navy boy on Valentine’s Day 1964, and they raised two kids in a small town in Wisconsin. Dan had promised his dad he
college. After finally getting his degree, he got married to a woman named Kathleen in 1966. Together, they raised four children. Dan’s marriage lasted 38 years, until his wife passed away from ovarian cancer. Kathy’s marriage also lasted 38 years, until her husband died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. After that, neither Dan nor Kathy was looking for another relationship. Then, a friend of Dan’s suggested he go on classmates.com. There, he found Kathy and decided to send her a message to see if she would be interested in meeting him. Kathy did not respond, and once again, Dan felt rejected. However, Kathy finally responded to Dan’s message, and they started up a conversation. They talked every night on the phone, and Kathy said things began to heat up between them. A few weeks later, Dan came into town one night and went to Kathy’s house with a couple of roses, got down on his knees, and asked her
to marry him. Kathy replied, “Oh, it’s so sudden…OK!” “We both had Kitchen Aid mixers, so we must be a perfect match,” she joked. Dan and Kathy were both 65 at the time, and they have now been happily married for 18 years. They felt they had a lot in common. Their former spouses were from small towns, Kathy and Dan had both grown up in Chicago suburbs, they both had many grandchildren, and they both came from solid marriages. They also wanted to travel and see the world. They spent their honeymoon in Ireland and Scotland. They have visited Australia, New Zealand, China, and Japan, and they have traveled around the horn in South America. Kathy and Dan wanted to find a warm place to live, so they came to Brownsville, where they discovered Palm Resaca Park. “We loved the Park and decided we wanted to spend the rest of our lives there,” said Kathy. “You’re only as old as you feel. Hey! Eighty is the new 60!”
When you see Kathy and Dan walking around holding hands, they are an inspiration to all of the other couples in the Park. Love in your 80s is about cherishing each day together, finding joy in the simple things in life, and creating new memories that add richness to your twilight years. •

Perspectives God Will Sustain You

Twelve years ago, I was hit with dev-
astating news. I had uterine cancer. I had only been married for one year and had never had a child. I’d dreamed all my life of raising a family, so the news was just crushing! However, I’d thankfully been well-taught for many years that God was my healer. So as soon as I got over the shock, the next words out of my mouth were, “The word of God says I am healed, so I am.” This was the start of a 10-year battle, but the good news is…here I stand, healthier and stronger than I’ve been in a decade! I’m a survivor; we like to be called “Thrivers!” After a full hysterectomy, it spread all over my abdomen. I went through chemo, lost all my hair, and lost over 100 pounds of excess weight (something to be thankful for). Then I had a major, 14-hour surgery in which nearly seven pounds of tumorous tissue was removed, along with portions of several organs and tissue in my abdomen. This was followed by radiation treatments and two rounds of
immunotherapy before the cancer was finally in remission. Through it all, God saw to it that I received excellent care from a wide variety of doctors and nurses. God saved me from the brink of death after an internal bleed--due to radiation--was discovered. I had a sweet relationship with my surgeon, who was like a grandfather to me. God was with me through it all. It often felt like He was holding my hand when I needed comfort. He was guiding the decisions of my surgeons. He was strengthening my husband who continued to work and nurse me, all at the same time. He was moving in others' hearts to help us financially. When depression would pick at my soul, He gave me the willpower to choose to be grateful for every little thing. That thankfulness would usher in the joy that gave me the strength to press on. In countless ways, God sustained my life and continues to do so day after day…year after year. Many folks have asked me, “How

do you stay so positive in the midst of such a fight for your life?” My heartfelt answer is this: Choose life. Choose thankfulness. Choose joy. Community Connects Through IMAS Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The International Museum of Art &
Science (IMAS) is currently hosting two collaborative community exhibitions that highlight the art of screen printing, Screen It: Youth Identity Through Art and Aligned Mind. Screen It: Youth Identity Through Art brings students from Buell Central Discipline Alternative Education Program of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) and local screen-printers Palo Santo Prints together at the IMAS to learn the creative and technical processes of screen printing, equipping students with the important technical skills utilized in the field of printmaking. This collaboration resulted in the Screen It: Youth Identity Through Art exhibition, which will be on exhibit at IMAS through February 25.Screen It: Youth Identity Through Art was made possible by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) – Arts Respond and is supported, in part, by a grant from Texas Women for the Arts, a program of the Texas Cultural Trust. Aligned Mind is a collabo-
rative, community exhibition spotlighting the artistic talents of Cielo Zuniga, Ruby Delgado, and Savannah Muñoz. This exhibition marks the culmination of Trucha's inaugural Movimiento Screen Printing Fellowship. I n A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 , Tr u c h a , a multi-media organization, issued a call inviting local artists to join the Movimiento Screen Printing Fellowship, developed in partnership with Tree Haus Creative Studio. The fellowship aimed to empower
and support local artists in creating socially impactful screen-printed artworks or projects. In late 2023, participating artists Zuñiga, Muñoz, and Delgado honed their skills as printmakers under the mentorship of Tree Haus Creative Studio during a dynamic, one-month program. Aligned Mind will be on exhibit at IMAS through February 25, inviting audiences to experience the culmination of this inspiring fellowship. Museum general admission

New Orthopedic Robot Brings Innovative Technology to Knapp Patients Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
M
id-Valley patients are now benefitting from an innovative new type of robotic-assisted knee surgery at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. The new method enables physicians to conduct precision surgical planning before the surgery utilizing pre-procedure CT scans. Dr. Michael Sander, orthopedic surgeon with UT Health RGV, recently performed the Mid-Valley’s first Mako total knee replacement at Knapp Medical Center. During the surgery, Dr. Sander holds a robotic instrument, and he directs where it goes and what it does. The device does not move at all without his guidance. In many cases, the state-ofthe-art Mako robotic system can help in facilitating greater accuracy and precision. This enables physicians to more accurately fit and position a prosthesis (an artificial device that replaces a damaged body part in the knee). The Stryker Mako SmartRobotics™ technology utilizes 3D CT-based planning software, which helps the surgeon create a surgical plan personalized for each patient’s individual needs. By helping to guide the surgeon in performing precision cuts,
Mako’s advanced AccuStop™ haptic technology reduces the amount of cutting required during surgery, preserving more healthy bone. “With Mako SmartRobotics™, I can utilize a CT scan to create a personalized surgical plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy before I enter the operating room and before I make a single cut,” Dr. Sander said. People with pain in their knee often have trouble walking, going up stairs, jogging, and doing other activities. Some experience these problems for years and are treated with medication and exercise until the pain becomes so great--and their mobility so impaired--that they seek orthopedic surgery. In most cases, this pain has been caused by arthritis, which is very common in the Valley and across the nation. “This advancement in joint surgery transforms the way total knee replacements are performed, by helping surgeons plan and perform the surgery with precision,” Dr. Sander said. “The surgeon has access to information, while using the Mako robotic knee replacement system, that has not been available with traditional surgery.
The Mako process features advanced surgical planning using the pre-operative CT scans,” Dr. Sander added. “Before the surgery starts, I have access to precise planning software that, when combined with the intraoperative data, has really changed the execution of the knee replacement compared to traditional surgery.” In many cases, this state-ofthe-art technology is expected to help facilitate better outcomes for patients. “At Knapp Medical Center, we are investing in the latest technology as we seek to partner with our doctors in reducing pain and in improving the quality of life for our patients,” Dr. Sander said. Following surgery, patients are helped by physical therapists and other licensed professionals in the Knapp Medical Center Rehabilitation Services Department. The therapists help get patients up to walk before they go home, including patients who receive knee replacements. “Knapp Medical Center is proud to bring this highly advanced robotic technology to the Mid-Valley area,” said Rene Lopez, MD, FACHE, RRT,

stumbled across the most amazing thing this morning: The much-anticipated annual quilt show at Llano Grande in Mercedes. (This was Llano Grande’s 14th annual event.) Hundreds of ladies--and a few men who mainly sat in the corners while the women shopped around--gathered Tuesday, January 30, for the show. They had beautiful quilts on display and for sale, vendors selling fabric, scissor-sharpening, raffles filling an entire stage, and demonstrations. I was amazed at the quick demonstration I watched on how to paint on fabric. Did you know you can color on fabric with a gel pen and set it with an iron and it becomes washable and wearable? How cool is that? I even found the perfect pattern of fabric for a pillow my daughter would like made for her college dorm room next year. (The wonderful sewing ladies at Eldorado Acres are going to help with sewing because this mama can't sew.) •
