And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
February is my favorite month of the Winter Texan season for several reasons. First, I can breathe after hosting the Entertainer Showcase, the Winter Texan expos in McAllen and Brownsville, and our annual Bayside Fiesta on South Padre Island. That is, of course, in addition to our day-to-day tasks of publishing this newspaper…and a whole lot of other things!
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

February is also my favorite month because we kick it off with our annual Cruise with Kristi, this year with over 300 Winter Texans in tow! I still find it hard to believe that a simple idea eight years ago has turned into such an incredible annual event.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

The timing couldn’t be more perfect, after the rush of January. We are all ready for a little rest and relaxation. And then there are the added benefits of no cooking, cleaning, or running errands for an entire week!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
In all seriousness, I really do take this time to rest and reflect. I clear my mind so I come home with a clear mind, ready to start planning our next adventure.

Oh, what a year for the Winter Texan Expo (WTE)! Let’s talk about the “firsts.” The thirty-FIRST WTE in McAllen, January 16 and 17, brought more than 7000 attendees in the doors of the McAllen Convention Center. They visited 130 vendor booths and sang along with our fantastic WTE entertainers. Welcome Home RGV recognizes that we couldn’t put this event on without our major sponsors, including the City of McAllen, Visit Corpus Christi, Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation, AIM Media, Texas Osteoporosis Foundation, South Padre Island, The Infinitus Group, SMP Senior Medicare Patrol, and Visit Harlingen. We also needed our

We couldn’t have accomplished this first without these sponsors: City of Brownsville, Visit Brownsville, Breakaway Cruises, Equity Lifestyle Properties, The Infinitus Group, and SMP Senior Medicare Patrol. In one day, we found out just how ready the Lower Valley was to host the WTE, so 2024 was the first of many!
The work behind the scenes of the WTE in McAllen and Brownsville cannot adequately be put into words. The planning, preparation, contracts, logistics, set-up, troubleshooting, networking, take-down and so much more happen because of the unwavering dedication of the entire WHRGV team.
And, of course, we couldn’t do it without all of you, our Winter Texans and local retirees, who show up each year with smiles on your faces and enthusiasm in your steps as you go from booth to booth to learn everything you can about the products and services available to you in the Rio Grande Valley. And we love watching you swing and sway to the music of our WTE entertainers.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in WTE 2024. Two cities. Two counties. One RGV. We’re already planning for WTE 2025, so get ready! •
by Chaplain Dennis Key
This story is from one of my brothers in Christ, as well as my brother law enforcement officer. We both retired after more than 25 years in law enforcement. A few years back, I took my wife to the Ten-3 Restaurant on top of the Sandia Peak in Albuquerque, NM. The views were breathtaking, and, as you might imagine, the prices were as high as we were.
After ordering dinner, she and I were chatting and just enjoying the views. After a few minutes, I noticed a family of six sitting across the room from us. At about the same time, I saw the father’s expression when he looked at the menu. Clearly, he had not expected how high the prices were going to be. As I watched the discussion between the father and his wife, God told me to pay for the family’s meal. I nearly started to bust out laughing. I literally said to myself, “I’m not paying for their meal.” When my wife got up to use the ladies’ room, God told me--this time in a much more forceful voice--“I want you to pay for their meal.” This time I didn’t

laugh. Instead, I started pondering how much it was going to cost me. Just then, the family’s waiter brought out four plates of hamburgers and fries. After placing the food down in front of the children, the parents began to eat off each of the children’s plates.
When my wife returned from the ladies’ room, I asked her what she thought four hamburgers would cost. She said $50.00 or $60.00. It was then that I sprang into action. I stopped their waiter and told him to give me their bill and not to tell them who paid it.
Here’s where God had the last laugh. As soon as the waiter left, a second waiter showed up and apologized for the delay in their dinners. Both parents had the most expensive steaks on the menu. The bill for their food and beverages came to $192.00! When I saw the bill, I nearly fell out of my chair. Then we started to laugh. I still believe God was in heaven laughing like a father who just played a practical joke on a son.
Here’s the very best part. The next day, we went down to the front desk
of Embassy Suites to check out. When we got the bill, it was exactly $192.00 less than what we expected to pay. I questioned the desk clerk about what I should owe, but she insisted she had accounted for both nights’ stay, and that that was the total cost. The lesson learned: You can never out-give God!

Misty took some time off from her very busy schedule as Park manager to teach a group of ladies in our Park how to decorate Christmas cookies. She spent two hours in the Rec Center kitchen making frostings of different colors. She then put the frosting into disposable piping bags and cut off the tips. She later explained to the

When the ladies showed up with their cookies, Misty suggested that they not get too close to the edge when applying the icing. Misty told them to repeat the process until the cookie was covered, being careful not to “over-flood” the cookie. Seven Oaks also collected donations at their gates. The total from all four parks was $14,920 , which, when tripled, will be $44,760.
Cinderella is a no-kill shelter and currently has approximately 90 dogs and 30 cats. It is totally funded by donations. Many residents of BGR have adopted pets from Cinderella,

The Lamb’s Loom in McAllen is privileged to be a designated collection point for Knitted Knockers! We are so blessed to add the Knitted Knocker organization to the many ministries we serve. Knitted Knockers is an international organization dedicated to supplying breast prosthetics to women who have undergone mastectomies.
Knitted and crocheted “knockers” are made by using an approved yarn, for comfort and fit purposes, and then stuffed with Poly-fil®. The approved-yarn list indicates that they have been tested to ensure the yarn is soft, nonabrasive to the skin, and made of a breathable fiber. These yarns provide an option to the heavy--and very hot--prosthetics the women may currently be using. A Knitted Knocker is lighter weight and made with breathable fibers, so heat rash and other complications can

be lessened. Knockers are given to each person at no cost, which serves as a gift of encouragement and helps those who may not be able to afford other prosthetic options.
At The Lamb’s Loom, we carry five of the approved yarns. There is
a special basket, located on top of our Donation Chest, just for donated Knockers. Then, every month or so, we have a “stuffing party,” and friends gather to sort, stuff, and prepare these to go out to a local clinic. Once there, women are aided by their medical team to be fit for just the right Knocker.
Please help us to spread the word to anyone who would like to join in this outreach, letting them know we are a recognized collection point for Knockers. You can make a Knocker, come to a stuffing party, donate Poly-fil® and, most definitely, pray for all the recipients. We currently serve three local clinics and a clinic just south of San Antonio.
Everyone can join in The Lamb’s Loom fun in person at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com

Ranch Fest to Highlight Ranch Culture, History
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Experience ranch life and culture during Ranch Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 10, at the Museum of South Texas History.
Ranch life and culture demonstrations, such as rope making, roping cattle, and horseshoe making will showcase how these important tools were used on the cattle trail. Other demonstrations focused
on ranch living are knitting, wood carving, and leather work. New this year is boot making, featuring the Mandujano Brothers from Weslaco, which is a long-standing tradition for vaqueros, ranch hands, and owners. The brothers will also create a makeshift workspace using the business’ 40-year-old working bench. Cappadona Ranch will share the process of making
mesquite beans into coffee and flour; both products can be purchased at the Museum Store.
Regional organizations, such as the Community Historical and Archaeology Project for Schools--or CHAPS--from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the East Foundation will educate the community with two new activities. CHAPS will identify distinct types of South Texas arrowpoints using a digging pit, and The East Foundation will explain the process of preparing cattle cuts. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., local snake handler Fred Zaidan will present South Texas snakes, along with other pet-friendly natives.
For more hands-on activities, visitors can grab yarn and a plastic needlepoint canvas and embroider a flower, making a neat home décor item. Another activity will feature painting Styrofoam cacti, representing the South Texas prickly pear. Those who are not inclined to arts and crafts can enjoy activities and a game in the Cattle Kingdom galleries upstairs. Visitors can create their own cattle brand using a Cattle Brand Registration Form. Then, visitors will don a personalized sheriff’s badge to “catch” the cattle thief, a game filled with clues and riddles.
To enhance the living history demonstration, Los Liberadores and friends will bring a 19th-century wagon and tipi. Buffalo Bill will walk around the Museum grounds for photo opportunities.
Children-friendly activities include a book presentation featuring local author Patty Raymond York, who will read ABCs to Ranching in the Mezzanine area. PaperPie, a local book seller, will have a variety of ranch-related books for purchase.
Other ranch-inspired items can be found at the Museum Store, such as heritage cookbooks, western-theme coasters,
and ranch history books. Several westerntheme paintings produced by local artist Isaac Guerra will be on display and available for purchase.
Visitors who plan to stay during lunch time can grab a bite to eat from a variety of food vendors selling ranch-style cuisine. E&B Elotes will roast eloté, or corn on the cob, and serve aguas frescas. Big Cal’s BBQ will prepare a variety of barbecue favorites, such as brisket. Peques Burgers will serve tacos, chili dogs, and charro beans. Local food vendors will also serve pulled pork sandwiches and pan de campo. Those who need a caffeine boost can enjoy coffee prepared by Kairos and pair it with a piece of pan dulce by La Mexicana Bakery.
Dine-in seating will face the Ranch Fest stage in the Museum parking lot so visitors can enjoy live performances by local school groups. Performances will feature Edinburg North High School Reverie band, followed by Mission High School Folklorico, PSJA Southwest High School Conjunto, and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Mariachi Sol de Oro.
Bring you family and friends to enjoy a day at the Museum of South Texas History Saturday, February, 10. Visit mosthistory. org/events for the latest updates on Ranch Fest.

Take a Musical Journey Through Diversity of Animation with McAllen Wind Ensemble
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
T he McAllen Wind Ensemble, formerly the McAllen Town Band, is excited to continue its 50th anniversary season. Their next concert, Animation , is Tuesday, February 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Animation spans generations of styles, genres, and cultures.
From the earliest days of moving pictures, animation captured the hearts of audiences, often due to engaging music. Classic childhood cartoons often had a backdrop of classical music to add both gravitas and humor. The band will perform one of the most hummable examples of this in an arrangement of Rosini’s Barber of Seville. Modern composers draw on the memory of these classics, and the band will perform one of the most creative adaptations with Russell Stanbridge’s Animation (Episode 1: WABBIT!).
Often, animation starts on the printed page and is adapted through television and films. Classic American comics led to just-as-familiar musical compositions. The Incredibles was a Disney Pixer film that built off of the comic book genre in a fun, modern way and features energetic, jazzy selections. Similarly, the rise in popularity of graphic novels, internationally, has led to an explosion of cult favorite anime films and shows. The band will feature one of the most enduring, Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service.
One newer realm of music has resulted from the genesis--and then massive growth—of video games over the past several decades. Some of the most commercially successful games result from the skillfully composed music, including Legend of Zelda. Even more recent gaming releases feature epically scored soundtracks, many of which will be featured in a medley by the band.
President of the Board of Directors Roy Contreras notes, “Our Animation concert is a unique mix of musical pieces, which include both familiar tunes and many new, but exciting, works. It has something for everyone!”
Heal International Medical Missions is the presenting sponsor for the concert. The McAllen Wind Ensemble depends on the support of sponsors, the City of McAllen, and its patrons to
continue to provide accessible community concerts.
Currently, the McAllen Wind Ensemble has about 75 musicians from across the region, ranging in age and professional background. Out of a love of music and a desire to improve the cultural offerings available in our community, they volunteer their time to rehearse once a week and perform regular concerts. The anniversary concert season will conclude with a special birthday celebration concert Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m.
This concert features a few special promotions: Buy one get one free (BOGO) for military veterans who present military ID at the box office. Middle school and high school band students can request vouchers for tickets through their band directors. Tickets start at $10, including fees, and can be purchased in-person at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office, by calling 800-745-3000, or at ticketmaster.com (additional fees may apply). Reserved seating is available. Season tickets are available, as well, and offer reserved seating.
As a nonprofit organization sustained by the community’s support, the McAllen Wind Ensemble also seeks to partner with local businesses that wish to advertise or sponsor programs. For more information, please contact info@mcallenwindsemble.org

Better Than Pixie Dust
T
oday’s Wisdom: All you need is faith, trust and pixie dust ~Tinkerbell
As a retiree, one of the questions I often get is whether I miss work. My answer is always the same. I don’t miss the chaos and stress of the job, but I do miss the people. In other words, I miss the relationships, not the tasks.
I would not have suspected that to be the case in 1981 when I began my career in health-care management. I liked the tasks then; the people part scared me a little bit. Things worked out just fine, though, because the people
taught me something extremely valuable. Their lesson became my three laws of effective leadership. I wasn’t perfect at them, and we had our share of missteps along the way. However, we also had one of the finest long-term-care facilities in the state in both reputation and quality of care.
Take care of the employees, and they will take care of the mission. Respect the employees, and they will respect the mission. Encourage the employees, and they will embrace the mission. When I succeeded in caring for the employees, they accomplished amazing things.
There is nothing secret about this formula. I saw many colleagues doing the same with great results.
I haven’t been to work for nine years, but I still see these rules in play. I see people responding positively to
encouragement. I see people gain new confidence when they feel respected for their efforts. I see people willing to take on new challenges when they see others have their back.
Our team responded to this in a work setting, but I have realized it isn’t just a work thing. It is a human-relations thing. It works in families, church groups, and community organizations. Good teachers find it works in the classroom.
We may be retired and our missions might not be as critical as when we were working, but we can still live by the three rules when we are dealing with people. It’s like spreading pixie dust…only better.
I’m just sayin’. •
