One thing, for sure, is there isn’t a lack of things to do in the Rio Grande Valley. Whatever you are interested in, there’s a group of people just like you, whether it’s dancing, crafting, RC racing, carving, cooking…and the list goes on and on. And I’m not just talking about in your resort; there are so many worthy causes out there, hungry for help.
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
And then there’s the flip side--those who want to learn something new and discover new and interesting opportunities to spend their time exploring. I’m fascinated by The Master Naturalist program and wish that I had the time to devote to going “all-in.” I love playing in my yard. Every year, I make sure my butterfly garden is ready for the migration, and in the past, I even had a wide variety of vegetables. But that’s about the extent of it. I’d love to be able to spot the native plants and understand how they fit into the overall scheme of things, whether that involves birds, butterflies or wildlife. One of these days, I’ll find myself with more time than I know what to do with, and when that happens, I know I’ll sign up!

While she enjoys engaging with other residents first at AmeriCana: The Birding Center RV Resort and now Mission West RV Park, she was looking to branch out. “I love the outdoors,” she says. “The flora and fauna here is so different than what I see in Minnesota.”

This year, the Town Band Association is commemorating its golden anniversary of providing family-friendly musical entertainment to McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. Each year, the holiday concert is a highlight for the musicians and the audience alike. The organization’s musical director, Roger Olivarez, shares, “Music is a gift that is best enjoyed when it is shared. It has been an honor to make music these past years and to get to share it with our wonderful audience, especially during this very special time of the year.”
Currently, the organization has about 75 musicians from across the region, ranging in age and professional background. Out of a love of music and a desire to improve the cultural offerings available in our community, they volunteer their time to rehearse once a week and perform regular concerts.
President of the Board of Directors Roy Contreras notes, “During this Christmas season,

A Tejano Christmas Carol Returns to Pharr Community Theater December 13
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
H
ave you ever wondered what would happen if the Rio Grande River lost all of its water in the RGV?” asked Pharr Community Theater’s longtime director/producer Pedro Garcia.
“Most of us take the Rio Grande River for granted, unless it’s to think about the undocumented trying to cross it to the U.S.,” he said. “Nevertheless, the river-drying-up concept is a predominant issue in our upcoming, fun Christmas play, A Tejano Christmas Carol.”

three ghosts who help him see the consequences of his unchanging ways, past and present. The spirits in this adaptation include a woman soldier from the Mexican Revolution, known as La Rielera, played by Pamela Zamora from Mission, and the spirit of Tejano singer Selena, played by Melody Hernandez from Edinburg.
This is the fifth time in the last seven years that the popular RGV theater company stages the play, with new talent and a fresh spectacle, sure to be enjoyed by all ages (especially nine-year-olds and above).
An ensemble of 12 adults and eight children from different parts of the RGV form the cast of this two-act, two-hour play (with one short intermission), set entirely in the Valley. The play is in English
“Our play is an adaptation I wrote based on the famous Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol ,” added Garcia, who also directs the play. “In our version, Scrooge becomes Mr. Codos, ( Codos loosely means stingy in Spanish), an unscrupulous businessman and water broker, played by Ray Perez from McAllen. After many years of greedily accumulating wealth, he’s about to reach his goal of becoming a multi-millionaire, upon selling huge portions of water rights from all the properties he owns along both sides of the famous river, to grave consequences. Now imagine that, I must conclude.”

The play runs December 13 – 19 at the Pharr Community Theater, 213 W. Newcombe Ave. (Park) in Pharr. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on weeknights, including Saturday. There is only one matinee, Sunday, December 17, at 3 p.m.
Tickets are sold online at pharrcommunitytheater.com for the 55 seats available per show. It is recommended you get them in advance for only $10 (general admission) or for $8 (kids under 18, adults 60+, and veterans.), with no surcharge fee. For discount tickets, please be prepared to show proof of I.D. at the door or pay the extra couple of dollars for regular price. Tickets will also be sold at the door, if any remain.

Back in 2012, I had the opportunity to submit a song I wrote to be considered for inclusion on a Christmas album. I was thrilled about the opportunity, so I prayed fervently that God would show me what to write that would bless others at Christmas time. He showed me clearly that, many times, we all need a reminder that He is the Prince of Peace. At times during the holidays, we can get caught up in the hustle and bustle of buying gifts, attending gatherings and events, and visiting with family and friends. While all these things are good, they can also cause some of us an undue amount of stress. Whether it’s stress over money, time, or relationships, it can become hard to hold on to peace in your heart during such times. In God’s word, it instructs us to not be full of cares but pray about everything and give Him thanks. When we do that, He promises His peace--which goes beyond anything we can understand--will keep us calm and assured. I seriously think the well-known phrase, “Don’t worry; be happy,” must have been based on this concept in the Bible! But beyond not worrying and choosing to be happy and thankful, God’s promise is clear: His peace, the kind that can’t even be explained, is what keeps our hearts and our minds free to enjoy the season and escape the stress.
Perspectives Jesus Be My Peace
If you are troubled by anything this season, I encourage you to take these lyrics He wrote on my heart and make it your prayer:
Jesus be my peace, when all around me rages. Come and be my peace when wind and storms prevail. Bless me with your peace, for my heart and for my soul. Jesus be my peace. Jesus be my peace.
Peace that flows from heaven's throne room. Peace that rules my heart and mind. Peace beyond all understanding. Peace so sweet, supreme, divine.
Jesus be my peace, calm assurance deep inside. Come and be my peace, fill with hope and joy. Bless me with your peace, strength and comfort may I know. Jesus be my peace. Jesus be my peace.
May you know the true peace of God this season! If you’d like to listen to the song for free, you may find it in the Spotify app under Jesus Be My Peace.

For many retirees, safety is also a top consideration, so GoBankingRates.com went a step further and compiled a list of the 11 safest places to retire in Texas, with McAllen making the list, once again. They ranked cities highest based on low crime rates, comfortable amenities, and affordable housing.
McAllen’s location in the Rio Grande Valley was highlighted because of its temperate weather and proximity to Mexico, which make McAllen an appealing retirement destination.
With approximately 143,000 residents, McAllen is ranked the third safest city in the country for 2023, according to SmartAsset.com’s Top 10 Safest Cities list. Property crime is also lower than average, and housing is affordable, costing around $285,000, on average, according to Redfin. McAllen offers a unique blend of Tex-Mex culture, food, and entertainment. •

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Valley residents, Winter Texans, visitors, birders, and those just getting interested in birding are invited to join a team in the count areas for the Annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. The CBC is a one-day event, per area, within established count circles. This year’s count will be held from December 14 through January 5 (2024). Local counts are listed below, with contact information for those interested in joining a team.
December 15, Coastal Tip, naturalist@spibirding.com
December 16, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, swmurray@outlook.com
December 26, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, txlacbc@flanwr.org
December 29, Anzalduas-Bentsen, roy.rodriguez@tpwd.texas.gov
December 30, Harlingen, hgtxcbc@gmail.com
December 31, Falcon Dam and State Park, idratherbebirding@gmail.com
January 1, 2024, Weslaco, john.yochum@tpwd.texas.gov
January 3, 2024, Brownsville, karl.berg@utrgv.edu
The Coastal Tip area encompasses Laguna Vista, Laguna Heights, Port Isabel, South Padre Island, and south to the Rio Grande River. McAllen, Hidalgo, Sharyland, Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo are within the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge Circle.
Individuals can count birds in their own yard if their yards are within one of the designated areas. Contact a team to find out if your yard is within a designated area. A list of birds and information will be sent, upon request. If you have a yard full of birds in a count area, invite a team; they may be able to visit on count day.
Go to this site and click on the highlighted link for the map view and for more information: https://www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count
Novice birdwatchers are encouraged to join a team. Extra eyes help spot birds for the experienced birders to identify, and the more novice birders get valuable experience in bird identification and habits.

In its 124 th year, the bird-count tradition dates to when officers in the then-newly-established Audubon Society proposed taking a census of birds rather than hunt them for sport. Globally, the Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count includes destinations and countries from as far north as the Artic Bay; east from St. Jon’s and Ferryland in Newfoundland; west to southern Guam; from the northernmost area
of Alaska, south through Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and South America; and down to Drake Passage in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The annual count is a citizen science survey, where volunteer birdwatchers provide the census data. The event is conducted by the National Audubon Society, an environmental organization devoted to the conservation of birds. •
Hello Travel Friends
Let’s Go to Brownsville and Behold Mexican Clothing Art
Hello Travel Friends, Being so close to the border, we have the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with all of the vibrant aspects of Hispanic culture. I'm fascinated by the magnificent colors and intricate designs of the garments worn for traditional ceremonies and special occasions.
Did you know there is a new museum in Brownsville that highlights just that? This rotating collection of over 600 pieces of clothing art can be seen on our Brownsville Historical Tour. Get all of the details and book your tour now at welcomehomergv.com. •
