Winter has officially arrived in the Rio Grande Valley--at least according to the TRUE experts: Winter Texans. As parks fill with familiar faces, dances return, and day trips hit the road again, the 2026 season is taking shape in that familiar way we’ve come to love--steady, joyful, and full of possibility. It’s hard to believe this marks my 19th season. Nineteen years of handshakes, hugs, coffee conversations, and park gatherings. Nineteen years of watching people discover new friends, new hobbies, and--sometimes--even new chapters of your lives. As much as things have changed over the years, so much has stayed the same--the warmth, the community, the stories that make this winter tradition so special. This season, I’ve spent more time out of the office than in it, and it has been a gift. Being welcomed into your parks and catching up face-to-face has reminded me why we do what we do. These connections are the heart of it all. January also brings the Winter Texan Expos, our chance to bring everything and everyone together under one roof. With destinations, health-care partners, vendors, entertainers, and old friends side by side, it’s one big celebration of life in South Texas! I want to personally invite you to join us at one or both shows this year. Discover what’s new, say hello, and share in the excitement of another season in the RGV!

Thank You

New Nonstop Service to Phoenix Announced at McAllen International Airport Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

M

cAllen International Airport (MFE) announced December 19 that American Airlines will launch new daily nonstop service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Ticket sales opened December 20, and service will begin June 4, 2026. In American’s recent announcement, Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of Network and Schedule Planning stated, “American is proud to offer unmatched connectivity across the United States. Today, we’re furthering our commitment, with new routes designed to help customers realize their travel goals in 2026 from important hubs such as Chicago and Phoenix. With new routes from places like McAllen, Texas, and more, we’re providing residents one-stop access to seal business deals, take a dream vacation with friends or family, and enjoy soccer matches on the global stage.” “We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with American Airlines and are excited to launch this daily service to Phoenix,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This route will enhance westward connectivity for our region, as well as offer daily, nonstop service to a key business and tourist destination. We are proud to partner with American Airlines to offer this air service in Summer of 2026.” The new year-round route will operate a daily flight connecting McAllen and the Texas Rio Grande Valley with Arizona’s Valley of the Sun. With the addition of this new route, American Airlines will now serve two major hub destinations from McAllen International Airport. Flight schedules and fares are available exclusively at AA.com. “American Airlines’ decision to launch daily, year-round nonstop service from McAllen to Phoenix is a tremendous win for our residents, our businesses, and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” said McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “This new route strengthens McAllen’s position as a gateway for commerce, tourism, and family connectivity, while expanding access to one of the nation’s most important aviation hubs. I’m deeply proud of our Airport team, whose diligent, persistent work in air service development continues to deliver real opportunities for our community. We are grateful for American’s continued investment in McAllen and look forward to the growth this service will help unlock.” “This new nonstop service directly connects McAllen International Airport to Arizona’s capital while providing our region with an additional strategic gateway to the West Coast and bring more connectivity through another American Airlines Hub to destinations worldwide,” said McAllen International Airport Director Jeremy A. Santoscoy, P.E. •

Sister Parks Collect Over 1,850 Pounds of Food for Local Food Bank

M

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

ission Bell/Trade Winds hosted their third annual Reverse Advent Calendar food drive. This was started in 2023 by a couple of park residents. DaLeen Markel found an article about a group of people that did this. She shared it with Rick Anderson, and a decision was made to give it a go. The annual food drive has turned into a highly successful event that the sister parks do together. The first year, it was estimated that about 1,200 pounds of food were donated. Last year, it was1,400 pounds, and this year over 1,850 pounds of food were donated to a local food bank, First Global Methodist Church in Mission. This abundance of food will be used during the year to help residents of Mission who are struggling to make ends meet. Rick Anderson headed it up, with lots of other park residents contributing their time and sheds to store the items until Saturday, December 13, when it was all loaded up and delivered to the church. It still is an amazing thing to see this “family” of residents come together and make this happen— people donating their time and, even more importantly, people donating food items. Kudos to all. •

Perspectives Change for the Better by Ernie Moquin

I

sn’t it exciting? The beginning of something new is always fun. A fresh start. Like many, we often make New Year’s resolutions to implement changes and make life better, richer, healthier…etc. One of our new chaplains serving in Arizona recently sent this testimony: “Living on the water for the last 24 years has been a wonderfull experience. My wife, Cindy, and I retired last September, sold our floating home in which we sailed from Southern California to Everett, WA, in 2010; then to Baja, Mexico; then to Newport, Oregon. It was 2015 when we left Everett for Mexico to do mission work for two years. Around four years ago, we were asked if we would be intrested in volunteering with (CRM) Christian Resort Ministries when we retired. Well, my answer at the time was if it’s the Lord’s will, then sure. So here we are in Benson, Arizona, serving our King Jesus and enjoying the sun and wonderful folks here. Entering the 4th quarter of our life is a true walk of faith. Proverbs says that man plans his way, but the Lord orders his steps. True peace

only comes to us when we let HIM guide our journey. We only have one life; that will soon be past and only what’s done for Christ will last.” Philippians 3:13-14 AMP says this, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.“ We encourage you--as you work on your resolutions this year--in whatever you do, press toward the goal of strengthening your relationship with God. This means more than just going to church or knowing ABOUT Him. This means actually knowing Him…talking to Him in prayer, seeking His will for your daily decisions, listening to His spirit as He gently leads you, and making a habit of reading His letter to you (the Bible). Blessings this new year as you learn to trust Him with every step you take. •

Things I Have Learned

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy by Bill Ward

Lost in the 1950s Today’s Wisdom: Wherever you go, your memories from the place you grew up in always remain special ~Guru Randhawa

I

often find myself musing (that’s my new word for the day) about the past. Of course, I enjoy memories of special people, fun events, even whole eras of life. There are lots of good things in the past that hold space in my brain. It occurred to me the other day that there is also a file drawer in there of the very small treasures that filled our early years, treasures we just don’t get to experience much anymore. The first thing in that old memory file is the sound of meadowlarks singing from rural country fence posts as we drove by in the car with the windows open. That meadowlark call pierced through all the road and wind noise and filled the car with a beautiful song…but I haven’t heard it in years. Another memory is the smell of burning leaves in the fall. The month of October had its own aroma. I believe that smell is illegal in most places now. When I was a kid, Mom did laundry on Monday. Monday evening was for ironing. Remember the steam iron? Slide, slide,

slide, hissss. Slide, slide, slide, hissss, as she set the iron down and the water escaped as steam. To this day, thinking about the hissss sound reminds me of Mom. Dad and us kids usually ended our Monday evening around the television. Mom ended it at her ironing board. And what farm boy can forget the sound of the John Deere G? Puts me out at Grandpa’s farm instantly, hearing that put-put. Speaking of Grandpa’s, that rustle of dried corn leaves when we walked through his corn field hunting pheasants brings back great memories of hunting with Dad. In those days, it was easy. Today the stalks are so close together you can’t possibly walk between them. I’m sure you have old memories in your brain, too, memories that haven’t surfaced in years and are unlikely to be heard again in our lifetime. Consider them treasures. I bet if you took a quiet moment out on the porch swing and tried to pull up a few, they would still be there, alive and well just waiting for another opportunity to surface. Give it a try. I’m just sayin’. •

Lambs Loom

Celebrates its 2026 Kickoff Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Y

’all know that last week was our 12th Annual Yarn Tasting, right? So, just in case you missed it, here are a few highlights for you! Last Friday found our Sit-n-Knit Room full of friends and fiber, everyone having gathered to kick off our “yarn year” together. Yarn Tasting menus were handed out, full of tasty descriptions of all that was on display. New yarns and new notions were on display for “scoping out.” Then, the much-awaited announcement came to reveal the total number of items that had been added to our Donation Chest and distributed to over 20 mission groups. Drum roll, please. Over 5,000 items were collected in 2025! That is thousands of hats warming heads, hundreds of blankets and shawls wrapping hugs around souls, and hundreds of Knitted Knockers given to clinics to support and encourage breast cancer survivors! All these items came together to bless others…all over the world! You can check out a few of the pictures of recipients on our website, or come by The Lamb’s Loom, see a few pictures, and hear a few stories of encouragement that each gift gives. During Yarn Tasting, our “winter” class signups opened. Knitting, crocheting, and learn-2 classes are available. You should come check them out. Of course, we love door prizes, and this year was no exception. Every person was a winner this year. Door prizes for all!

The next announcement came with the revealing of our MakeAlong theme for 2026. In honor of our dear friend, Ann, the theme for this year is Ladybugs! Ann absolutely loved them! Small and born with a purpose, these little creatures have a huge impact on our world…and so does she…still. We are looking forward to seeing all of the creativity that comes in the door this year. Speaking of: We want to thank all of the wonderful people who participated in Make-Along 2025. It was a hit! All of these people followed along with our theme for the year and then contributed one of their own creations to the Donation Chest. There were three people who received special prizes for participating every month. Friday and Saturday were filled with fiber fun in our Sitn-Knit areas, too, and the Coffee Bar was enjoyed by all. Coffee and creamers, tea and cookies--what’s not to like? We hope you will come and join in all the yarn fun and stitch it forward with us! The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. Our regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Hello Travel Friends

Ireland Bucket List Trip Sarah Denzer, Tour Manager

Dear Travel Friends, If my red hair and pale skin tone never gave it away, let me be the first to confirm I do--in fact-have Irish in my family history. It’s a little part of my genetic background that I’ve always wanted to explore. Have you seen the stunning backgrounds of the Irish countryside filled with castles, a million shades of green, and picturesque little villages? Being able to travel to Ireland is a must on my bucket list. Is it on yours, too? Ireland is also known as the Emerald Isle and is part of the United Kingdom. It’s known for famous literary giants like Yeats and whimsical mythological creatures like leprechauns and fairies. How could it not be, living day to day in front of such incredible backdrops? Ireland is also the originator of Halloween, Guinness, and the engineers of the Titanic. My favorite Ireland fact is there are no snakes! We can all agree that’s a huge plus! Well… that and the accent. How charming, right? Between cliffs and lighthouses are darling villages packed with incredible people who have a dayto-day life that looks a little different than South Texas. That’s the kind of experience I love to make happen. That’s why I chose Ireland as the first ever international land tour offered by Welcome Home RGV! This 10-day Ireland land tour is the perfect way to get out of the country stress free. You’ll be able to see 11 different Irish cities, including Dublin, Galway, Kingscourt, and more. We’re all going to be lined up to kiss the Blarney Stone, and we’ll even get to see a sheepdog demonstration and stay overnight in a castle! This trip offers a perfect balance of scheduled activities with a local guide, as well as some free time to shop, explore, and eat at the places you choose. Colette is the tour company we’ve chosen, and I’ll be on the trip as the host from Welcome Home. Someone will be there every step of the way to help you with luggage, driving you from the airport, and even pointing you in the direction of the nearest restroom. Those of you who have traveled with me overnight know I always take great care of all my travel friends. I aim to please! This tour will be even more magnified and is guaranteed to leave you with a smile and incredible memories. I know this trip is going to fill up quickly because we’ve already begun. For more information, check out our website at welcomehomergv.com and request more information on the Tours & Travel page. Come along with me and we’ll check Ireland off our bucket lists--together. •

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Tim Hadler: Nashville, Branson, and the Winter Texan Expo Tim Hadler was raised on a farm in the foothills of the volcano Mount Saint Helens in Washington State, the youngest of nine children. He jokes that his first audience was the cows he used to sing to on the farm. Since those days of farming, he’s always loved to sing and dreamed of someday taking his talent to Nashville and beyond. It was never so much to be a “star” but to be able to help those in need--because he could. At the age of 10, he started having the calling to help, especially the lost and homeless. As a young lad, he’d wake up in the middle of the night hearing THE voice to “please help”! His influence in this came, he believes, from his family’s roots. His mother and father instilled in all of their children to help others in all you do. Giving out food baskets to the hungry during the holidays and being at the community’s beck and call for anything was a normal thing in his childhood that his mother and father never failed to deliver. At the age of 20, Tim moved to Nashville, and two years later fulfilled a dream of singing on the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. This opportunity opened the door to many things, including landing a recording contract with a major producer in Nashville, landing two songs in the top 100 songs on the Music Row Chart, and an invitation to move to Branson, Missouri, to entertain. He’s been touring

the country ever since and has been a Branson entertainer now for 24 years. Tim is the founder of GUMI CAMP; GUMI stands for Glad U Made It, and it’s his opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream and help those most in need. GUMI specializes in helping America’s veterans. (To learn more about the Veterans Resources Center Tim founded, please go to gumicampusa.com.) Tim currently performs over 100 shows a year in Branson, paying tribute to the legendary George Strait in Strait to Branson. When not performing in Branson, he winters in South Texas, performing shows on South Padre Island in the winter. In the spring and summer months, you may just happen to see him performing near--or in--your hometown, touring from Nashville to the Northwest to the Great Lakes area in Minnesota. Though life gets busy, Tim never loses sight of his roots and returns every summer to spend precious time with his mother and siblings, camping and fishing in the foothills of Mount Saint Helens. To book Tim, call him at 417-559-3892. Tim Hadler is the final performer for the 2026 Winter Texan Expo in McAllen. Catch him Wednesday, January 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. Admission, boot scootin’, and fun are free! •

Double Decker: A Quarter Century Performing

That’s right, Double Decker has been crooning classic country and 50s and 60s rock ’n’ roll tunes for over 25 years! Dave and Bev make up this dynamic performing duo, bringing toe-tapping tunes to dance floors across the Rio Grande Valley, performing from the Riverside Club in Mission to Park Place Estates in Harlingen, Elks Lodges, and cafes. Dance ‘til you drop when Double Decker takes to the stage day two of the Winter Texan Expo, Wednesday, January 21, at 11:30 a.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. Admission is free! •

Winter Ranch Residents Give Back to Community in Big Ways Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

T

he Rio Grande Valley is well aware of the financial benefits winter tourism brings each year, but are there other benefits Winter Texans bring to the Valley? Aside from the warm weather and a multitude of activities, residents of Winter Ranch RV Resort in Alamo say one of the best benefits of life in the Rio Grande Valley is the symbiotic relationship they enjoy with their surrounding community and the opportunities to give back. That is especially apparent during the holiday season, when residents and community alike join forces to celebrate. Some Winter Ranch and community activities this season included: • Over 20 quilts/blankets were donated to the local Veteran Peer Center from Winter Ranch quilters, knitters, crocheters, and Sew For Fun groups. • A group of Winter Ranch residents prepared and delivered Thanksgiving meals and gift cards to the Veterans Peer Center in Weslaco for veterans, their spouses, and their children to enjoy. • Over 120 stuffed animals were donated to the Alamo Fire Department to help calm children during traumatic events. • More than 150 wrapped presents were donated and delivered to the children of Arise Adelante, a local organization that promotes the personal development and empowerment of the community--especially women, children, and youth of the Rio Grande Valley--through educational programs that strengthen their organized community and civic participation. • Three hundred Christmas stockings stuffed with toys, stuffed animals, crocheted stocking caps, toiletries, and art supplies were delivered to the children of Arise Adelante. • Approximately 50 wrapped gifts were delivered to residents of Heights of Alamo Nursing Home during the Winter Ranch Holiday Visit,

where volunteers and residents sang Christmas carols, heard a Christmas message from Chaplain Paula Key, and shared holiday camaraderie. • One hundred thirty colorful, hand-crocheted mobius fidget balls were donated in early December to the Heights of Alamo residents. The edge of these balls can be endlessly pulled out from the center as a tool for focusing attention or calming restless nerves. • Students from Gus Guerra Elementary School came to Winter Ranch with songs, cheers, and dances for residents and left with gifts from Santa and Mrs. Clause. • The RazzMaTazz song-and-dance troupe from Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen delighted Winter Ranch residents with a fabulous holiday musical and left with a healthy monetary donation to add to their performance coffers. • Winter Ranch residents decorated their golf carts and participated in the Alamo Christmas Parade. Sharing by Winter Ranch residents does not stop after the holiday season, though. Throughout the year, residents enjoy watching and participating in local parades, hosting the Alamo Police and Fire departments at the annual RC Car Racing event, making monthly visits to Heights of Alamo Nursing Home, volunteering their time at local hospitals, donating household items and food to Arise Adelante, as well as providing toiletry donations to the Veterans Peer Center and donating quilts to various organizations. These are just a few of the giving and sharing opportunities Winter Ranch residents enjoy. Residents say participating in these worthwhile activities helps them feel a part of the community, and they love the interaction and camaraderie that develops. It’s a large part of why they choose to spend their time in the Rio Grande Valley. •

Thank you to all of the ladies at Golf View Estates who made this happen, including Kathy Williams, Chris Anderson, Kay Hendrickson, Gloria Peterson, Carol Rundell, Samme Buck, and Darla Linnenkamp! If you know of anyone who might want to donate supplies, please contact Kathy Williams through email at kathywilliams1250@yahoo. com. Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo (WOWE) Celebrates 30th Anniversary

T

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

he Lower Laguna Madre area’s special coastal natural beauty and biodiversity is endearing to anyone lucky enough to live in or visit the area. Nature’s offerings are especially enjoyed during the winter months not just by locals but also by northern winter visitors--in the likes of people and birds who have come south to enjoy the subtropical climate of the coastal tip of Texas. Nature is abounding at this time of year, and it is to be celebrated during the South Padre Island Birding Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary’s 30th Annual Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo (WOWE) happening February 5 - 7. This one-of-a-kind, multi-day Expo offers attendants a special opportunity to enjoy--and learn about--the nature of the Lower Laguna Madre through a series of daily speakers comprised of local coastal conservation biologists, local park rangers and naturalists, expert fishing guides, and Texas Master Naturalists from the two local chapters, as well as through live wildlife shows. WOWE is also offering pre-Expo guided nature field trips February 2 – 4 to help tourists discover nature first-hand via land and water. This year, field trips will be visiting three hard-to-access units of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge: the largest wetland restoration project in the country, the Bahia Grande Unit; the scenic “Steve Thompson Wildlife Drive,” which runs along the shores of the Laguna Madre adjacent to beautiful coastal Lomas and prairie; and the freshwater wetlands of the “Westlake Trail.” Field trips will also visit Cactus Creek Ranch, a private wildlife education and conservation ranch that works alongside the refuge and offers a unique South Texas wildlife dazzle! Relaxing

evening field trips will also be offered, culminating with stories around the campfire or with a nice glass of wine! Guided boat tours will drift along the shores of the Laguna Madre for those who want to get a closer look at bird islands and play with the dolphins. The Expo brings two special features this year to celebrate its 30th anniversary! Jonathan Wood’s thrilling “Raptor Project” will be back for another run, to introduce the audience to the amazing birds of prey of the area and the world through three daily live raptor shows. Attendants will have a chance to purchase a photo opportunity with raptors--like Harris’ hawk, the black vulture, the spectacled owl, and the incredible bald eagle--before and after the shows. Saturday, February 7, Shannon and Gary Saurage, owners of Gator Country and stars of Texas Gator Savers (as seen on EarthX) will be showcasing their nuisance-alligatorsaving expertise through live alligator shows. WOWE will also be showcasing the amazing nature of the area through a friendly photo contest fundraiser. All photo submissions will be exhibited throughout the Expo, and winners will be awarded during the photo contest awards ceremony on the last day of the Expo, Saturday, February 7. WOWE will be held February 5 – 7, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday until 4 p.m.), at the South Padre Island Birding Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary. To learn more about WOWE, see the presenter schedule, find special hotel rate opportunities, and register for pre-Expo field trips and the photo contest, visit spibirding.org/wowe or call the SPIBNC&AS at 956-7616801. •
