Your Connection to the Rio Grande Valley

Can you hear the clock ticking? I sure do! Although many of you line up early, I certainly hope you’re not waiting in line for Winter Texan Expo 2025 quite yet. You have 13 more days to get ready for the McAllen Expo Tuesday and Wednesday, January 21 and 22, and the Brownsville Expo Thursday, January 23. You already know it’s a must-go event, but every year, we change things up a bit. We can’t wait for you to see everything for yourself.
As I read Eryn’s cover story, I couldn’t help but think about how much technology has changed in recent years. Many of our Rio Grande Valley store owners now offer online shopping, we can communicate through texts and social media, and drones take pictures for us. What I love is that so many of you are up to speed with—and even ahead of— these trends. You amaze me.
If you go to South Padre Island, make sure to post about spending a day in January on the beach so all of your friends up north will join you in the RGV next season—or even put down their snow shovels and get down here now.
There is so much to love about the Valley, and it’s even better with all of you here to enjoy it with us!

Droning in the RGV
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Photos courtesy of Chico Garvis
Three times a week, the skies over Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission are taken over-somewhat--by drones. In 2015, Chico Garvis and two other men organized a drone enthusiast group. In its first year, they used small, inexpensive drones, but a Black Friday sale the following year really upped their droning game. The DJI Mini 3 drone went on sale at Walmart. “That caught our eyes, and we went over and did the Black Friday thing,” says Garvis.

Coincidentally, Bentsen Grove has a building dubbed the Hanger. “It even has a propeller on top,” says Garvis. It’s home to loads of activities, such as table tennis, poker, stained glass, and woodburning.
Two afternoons and one evening a week, it’s where drone operators from the Resort meet up, flying drones until the batteries run out.

Garvis got into droning as something different to do, but he’s always had a love of planes. “I used to build RC planes but didn’t fly them; you crash them, you cry a lot,” he says with a chuckle.
He and his wife, Jackie, are Converted Texans via Illinois. The couple spent 11 years as full-time RVers before settling in at Bentsen Grove. Garvis says he took a lot of pictures during their travels. Now he’s taking his photography to the next level…literally.
“Oh my gosh, I’ve got so many photos!” Capturing beautiful sunsets and scenery--crediting the ease of using the drones. And the typical reaction from people when he shares drone images: “Oh, wow!”
219 W Nolana McAllen, TX 78504
Garvis explains that you don’t need an operator’s license for the mini drones, boosting their popularity. And once the drone operator has established a home point, if the batteries get low or contact is lost, it automatically returns.
This makes it easier for novices to take part. “We let them fly our equipment,” Garvis says, “because we know it’s not going to run off and disappear or get caught in the wind.” But they also use more inexpensive drones indoors for practice. Garvis has even sent up hoops to hone skills. Garvis says the hobby is what you make of it. Less expensive options sometimes don’t come with instructions and can be easily lost in the wind. Contrarily, while the DJIs are more costly, they are easy to fly and fun to use. And he recommends keeping an eye out and taking advantage of special deals and sales. •

Spotted In The RGV
Port Isabel Lighthouse Port Isabel, Texas
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
The Rio Grande Valley landscape is, in a word, flat. That might be why the site of the Port Isabel Lighthouse was such a thrill for locals who grew up here. The landmark was built in 1852, according to portisabellighthouse.com. The site references its inception as a “beacon of commerce” to the region and its “significant part in military operations” during the Civil War. The historic Port Isabel Lighthouse and the adjacent keeper’s cottage are open to the public, visit the site for more history, hours of operation, and entry information.

Hello Travel Friends
Tiffany Stained Glass in the RGV
WHRGV tour January 29
Hello Travel Friends,
Have you ever been driving on 281 when you notice a large, dark building off to the side? When I first saw it being built, I thought it was going to be a haunted house or something along those lines. The juxtaposition of the interior from the exterior is shocking. If you haven’t stopped in, this is the Gelman Stained Glass Museum. It is home to the largest and most comprehensive stained-glass collection in the United States.
My first question when I heard this was, “Here in San Juan? Why?” Dr. Gelman is a local anesthesiologist, and this is actually his personal collection. He has been collecting these stained-glass windows for over 30 years. Some of them used to be displayed at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen before ultimately finding this gorgeous home in San Juan. If you can believe it, this isn’t even his full collection--and he continues to collect today. There are 174 sets on display in the museum, all dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You’ll even find works from Louis Comfort Tiffany of Tiffany Studios. The history being preserved by these works of art in South Texas is phenomenal. Not only is the artwork itself incredible, but so is the technology behind it. When you see the building from the outside, you may be confused--because there are no windows. The stained-glass windows are installed inside the building

with state-of-the-art lighting behind them. This lighting make it easy to view every detail in the artwork.

When you first walk into this Museum, the beauty and details will overwhelm you. On your own, you can easily go inside and be in awe of these works of art. However, without someone to share with you the specifics on what you’re seeing, you aren’t quite getting the whole picture. I have set up a great opportunity for you to get the full experience at the Gelman Stained Glass Museum January 29. Not only will you be able to walk around and view the marvelous stained glass, but you’ll enjoy a presentation from a Museum historian to help you fully understand what you’re seeing. We’ll also have a catered, sit-down lunch inside the Museum to truly take in the breathtaking views. You’ll have time to wander around the Museum at your leisure, as well, and ask the guides questions. If you’re interested, make sure you book your tickets today at welcomehomergv.com.
The Museum’s goal is to inspire, uplift, educate, and illuminate the community. Stopping in to appreciate these incredible works of art definitely checks all of those boxes. I hope you join me in January!

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward
WI’m Betting on the Old Folks
e recently stayed a few weeks with our daughter and her husband. They enjoy superhero movies, so we became quite familiar with the Marvel characters, all of whom are quite adept at saving mankind.
Don’t you wish you had some superheroes in your life? They could make things so much better. It occurs to me that maybe we have actually all had them. They were the people in our lives who lit up the room when they entered. They were the coworkers who we loved to have assigned to our shift because we knew the day would go better with them there.
They were the friends we could count on for absolutely anything when we were in distress. They were the people who showed up before we even knew we needed them. They were the bright lights in our lives.
TODAY’S WISDOM:
The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. ~Mark Twain.
I wonder if Twain knew how profound his statement above was. Is not “Why are we here?” the central question for every one of us?
The religious folks all have an answer to the question, but at least one of the reasons should be the same for everyone, regardless of religious persuasion.
In my professional life, I worked closely with people. I was able to see, firsthand, many examples from both sides of that question. I encountered many people whose mission was “self.” None of them are memorable to me today, except for the interesting stories I collected in their presence. They had no positive impact on me or the people around them.
On the other hand, I also met many people who I would call “People of the Light.” They were my superheroes. They made life better. They were the people who
knew why they were here and embraced their mission. I’m not talking about walkingon-the-moon-style missions. I am talking about building-their-community-one-smallrelationship-at-a-time missions.
One of the things I have learned in life is that we all have a mission. Some of us are still waiting to learn what it is. I know, though, that life is better for everyone because of the people who have it figured out.
I’m just sayin’. •

Perspectives Culture Shock
by Chaplain Branden Freeland
We live in a unique area, which is quite attractive to those seeking a warmer winter climate. We started out planning on being Winter Texans, but God had other plans, and we are so very glad He did. The warmer climate is probably the main draw to our beloved Rio Grande Valley, as is the blending of such diverse cultures. For my wife and me, this was a culture shock. We had no idea of the drastic differences there were, and we have learned to love and embrace the Mexican people. We have had the extreme blessing of pastoring in two park churches in Harlingen, and also being full-time missionaries in Mexico.
The Mexican culture is very family-oriented, and oftentimes you will find many generations living together and looking after one another. This makes me think of how it used to be in our country and how, in my own family, it seems someone flipped a switch. The older generations are treated as more of a commodity than the patriarchal roles they played in the past. I have spoken with many Winter Texans and full-timers in the RGV who feel they aren’t regarded as important to their family. Now don’t get me wrong; there are many who have wonderful, healthy relationships with their families, but

it doesn’t seem to be the norm. For my family, when the matriarchs and patriarchs passed away, the family unit seemed to have crumbled. Maybe that is true for yours, as well?
Well, here is my two cents on why that is. Most families used to attend church services together and then gather at grandma’s house for a grand lunch she had prepared. There was a prayer before the meal and discussions about the message, and the Sunday service was the anchor of our culture and society. I even grew up in a blue-law town (Remember those?), where you couldn’t do much of anything unless you went to the next town over. Most of us can clearly see what has happened to our world. We can see the decline in church attendance and the lack of respect for elders and spiritual leaders in the family. “Respect your elders” was a common phrase heard when some whipper snapper was getting a little mouthy, but anymore, there isn’t much correction of those mouthy youngsters. The disrespect grows exponentially with every generation.
What can we do to turn it all around? I’m glad you asked. When I was a kid, I had a “drug problem.” My momma and all my grandparents dragged me to church every time the door was open! You may have had a “drug problem,” too. This made an impact on my life and planted the seeds that led me to where I am now, serving the Lord and serving a whole lot of grandmas and grandpas while pastoring two parks. You are important! You are an essential piece of the puzzle of your family, so by all means, be a little pushy; get that respect; and take your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids to church to show them how essential your Savior Jesus Christ is to you. Without Christ Jesus as the Chief Cornerstone in our families and homes, what kind of world will we be leaving for those great grandkids? Be essential. Show your family the greatest love of all, and you will never regret it.
Proverbs 22:6 KJV Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. •

Land & Sea Christmas Sets Sail
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Welcome Home RGV’s sold-out Land & Sea Christmas Tour started with a comfy motor coach ride from the Rio Grande Valley via RGV Tours Saturday, December 7. After a couple of rest stops--Whataburger and Buc-ee’s--the group arrived in Galveston for a two-night stay.
Donning blinking Santa hats, they took in the light display at Moody Gardens, followed by a private buffet meal. Next up: A guided tour of the historic Texas city and Dickens on the Strand before boarding Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas for a five-night cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya.

Accompanying the group was Welcome Home RGV travel agent Kristy Meyer and tour manager Sarah Denzer. More WHRGV Land & Sea adventures are planned, including SeattleVancouver-Alaska and Boston to Canada for the fall foliage, both in 2025.
