Greenwich residents join fight

Opposition is mounting against a proposal to terminate a majority of Parramatta River ferries at Barangaroo near Darling Harbour instead of Circular Quay as at present.

Latest objections came from Greenwich residents meeting at Greenwich Community Centre where Sydney Ferries Transdev General Manager Operations Craig Rieck attended and answered a barrage of questions. He was accompanied by Hetaal Badiyani who is Communications and Stakeholder Manager. Mr Rieck was previously bombarded at a packed hostile Hunters Hill Town Hall meeting and Parramatta City Council has joined the action. See Page 10 Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts has secured a month’s extension for complaints to local MPs electorate offices. See page 4.

GLADESVILLE’s McDonalds Restaurant has become a popular haunt for a dozen magpies. Readers of The Weekly Times report the magpies have established a territory at the eastern end of the car park on Victoria Road and have become so used to being fed by humans that they hop onto the side mirrors of cars expecting a morsel. French fries are their favourite food and the birds will even hop onto the side windows of cars – within inches of the driver – waiting for a bag of fries to be opened and they love to be hand fed. Magpies have been shown to be able to recognise and memorise the faces of kind hearted humans and anyone who feeds magpies in their backyard will know they call be called down and will sometimes respond with their own calls. These Gladesville magpies do not seem to want to swoop to defend their territory, although swooping is usually confined to spring when the birds defend their nests. Unlike Ravens and other blackbirds, Australian magpies are bipedal and walk rather than hop,. One TWT reader observes that they are mostly seen in the car park at twilight. “We think they’re quite funny and we hope Mc Donalds don’t take steps to remove them.” Magpies are opportunistic birds with a keen sense of sight but why the Gladesville magpies have a particular preference for french fries could be due to the size and shape of the food, which can be easily snatched , carried and digested.

Ferry terminal at Barangaroo rejected at Greenwich

Wednesday 26 February, 2020 THE WEEKLY TIMES 3

BY OUR CHIEF CIVIC ROUNDSMAN

Greenwich residents overwhelmingly voted down a Transdev proposal to terminate ferries at Barangaroo instead of Circular Quay at last Wednesday’s special meeting at Greenwich Community Centre. (8hb 3 cols) The packed hall supported a motion to say: 1. Transdev’s consultation process did not provide adequate detail of changes at key locations, required those who wished to comment through its consultation interface to navigate an unnecessarily complex process and did not allow adequate time for meaningful community engagement 2. Barangaroo is not a major transport interchange. Public transport links : (a) are not adjacent to the ferry wharf (b) require commuters to walk distances that will add significantly to travel times (c) are not easily accessible to less mobile members of the community. 3. We request that the current F8 ferry route be maintained and that a stop at Barangaroo be added to the route at peak times. 4. That this resolution be communicated to Transdev, Transport for NSW, the Premier, the Minister for Transport and Roads and the Member for Lane Cove.

Eastwood dining: Delicious and sensational value! I’ve been enjoying many wonderful and affordable meals down at Eastwood recently. Businesses there are doing it a bit tough, with people staying away from Eastwood due to Coronavirus fears. The government has in place rigorous border quarantine controls, with the risks being well managed. The risks of getting Coronavirus at Eastwood would be lower than the background mortal risks of living our everyday lives. The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself! I hope to see you too down at Eastwood soon, enjoying the best culinary choices available in all of Sydney! When you’re enjoying your meal, take a selfie and post to social media with #eastwoodeats! 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 26 February, 2020

Letters to the Editor Council should treat all local businesses equally Dear Sir, Ryde Council has resolved to distribute small business grants of up to $2,000 to shop owners financially impacted by the downturn in business as a direct result of coronavirus fears. These fears undoubtedly dampened consumer confidence in the City of Ryde. It has without a doubt affected Eastwood businesses, but sadly, it has also impacted on other town centres across our city, particularly those with above average Asian-Australian populations. Despite this, Ryde Council has resolved that the exclusive beneficiaries of the funding are Eastwood businesses. Is it not Council’s role to allocate its resources in a fair and equitable manner? Shouldn’t the policy apply uniformly to all affected businesses within the Ryde LGA? Council’s resolution, only recognising the hardship experienced by Eastwood businesses, at the exclusion of other town centres, is simply unfair and unAustralian. It is discriminatory and unfortunately is starting to divide our community: ‘Eastwood Shop Owners V ‘The Rest of Ryde’. Yet, the key drivers of this Council motion, Clr Simon Zhou and Mayor Jerome

As we move into the final year of our Hunters Hill Council term, I’d like to reflect on some of the things we have done and the things we are yet to finalise.

I was very pleased to see the Reiby Road footpath completed in time for the start of the Hunters Hill High School year. This was an exceptional safety outcome for the school community. Whilst my plan to build this footpath was initially met with resistance from the Mayor and other councillors, I am pleased that they eventually came on board to support it. *** The State Government has approved the funding of a school crossing supervisor for Boronia Park Public School. The position is currently being advertised, so if you know anyone who might be interested in this important community role, send them to iworkfornsw.nsw.gov. au <http://iworkfornsw. nsw.gov.au> . --Hunters Hill Council is in the final design stages of a school crossing in Mary Street, which will make the street safer for students of Villa Maria and Joeys. I look forward to getting support from my fellow councillors at the next Hunters Hill Council meeting so we can get this delivered in time for Term 2. *** Councillor Zac Miles and I are looking forward to attending the

Laxale, are accusing councillors advocating for a more equitable distribution of the funds - to all affected Ryde shop owners - of dividing the community. The Zhou/Laxale plan - a cash giveaway only to businesses in the Council Wards in which these two councillors will soon seek re-election - will now be placed on public exhibition until March 11 2020, as required by the Local Government Act. A report will then be brought back to Council in March 2020, to determine if this unfair and controversial plundering of the community’s coffers will go ahead. We encourage you to have your say! Councillors ROY MAGGIO & Dr PETER KIM Putney/Eastwood

Converting fields to other sports

Dear Sir, In discussing the cancelling of the masterplan for Westminster Park, Gladesville (TWT 19/2/20) I note that Ryde Councillor Pederson stated “I understand that the City of Ryde requires more sports fields for our growing population”. I suggest that in the soccer season Clr Pederson go for a drive on a Sunday around to Ryde soccer fields (except at Christie, Morrison

or Meadowbank Parks) and note that the soccer fields are largely unused. In fact you could convert three or four soccer fields in Ryde to other sports and there would still be enough soccer fields in the region for week-end use for a 50 percent population growth over at least the next 20 years. A key NSROC (Northern Sydney Councils) report often used in these discussions didn’t have access to field use details and was more directed to North Sydney where men and women play soccer on Sundays. I do agree with Clr Pederson that no-one wants trees chopped down, fields enlarged, full competition floodlights and a field to meet the standards for men’s Friday and Saturday night floodlight competition at Gladesville, but who would? So when Clr Pederson approves tens of millions of dollars of funding at Meadowbank to improve the official home ground of St Patricks FC for players from the

HUNTERS HILL HAPPENINGS with Councillor Ben Collins first School Safety Committee meeting after getting councillor support for it late last year. This committee will give local P&Cs a direct voice to council, encouraging better dialogue with the school community and swifter action on school safety measures. *** Hunters Hill Council has received more than $3.7million in State and Federal funding for various community projects in the last two and a half years. Zac and I have been working closely with our State Member Anthony Roberts to bring much needed funding to a council that has traditionally not worked well with its state and federal counterparts. --I am pleased to see that the Hunters Hill Library Space is coming along. A better library service is something Zac and I have been pushing for since we were elected. I didn’t have support of the other councillors when I first tried to move Hunters Hill Council away from the old agreement, but I am pleased my fellow councillors eventually got on board. We will now have more services, and save hundreds of thousands of dollars, which can be put back into the community. *** Zac Miles and I have met with Anthony Rob-

erts MP to raise our concerns about the proposed changes to ferry services. We are pleased that he shares our concerns and will be raising them with the Transport Minister. We all agree there should be more ferry services, but not at the cost of direct services to Circular Quay. Transdev agreed to Anthony Roberts’ request to accept further submissions, and if you send directly to his office (lanecove@ parliament.nsw.gov.au <mailto:lanecove@parliament.nsw.gov.au> ) they will be forwarded to Transdev. *** Finally, I would like to encourage everyone to join us for the Coulter Street Party next Friday (6th of March). This is being organised by Ryde Council as part of a strategy to revitalise Gladesville, something Zac and I feel very passionate about. If you see me there, come and say G’day. You can contact me bencollins@huntershill. nsw.gov.au or 0426 923 669.

Govt first priority to our citizens

Dear Sir, The Chinese government and the Chinese ambassador to Australia have in the past few days lodged what I regard as an extraordinary attack on the Australian government over Canberra’s handling of the Coronavirus epidemic. They have accused our government of being “too harsh” in its response by banning amongst others Chinese students returning to our country. Can someone please explain to the Chinese that our government’s priority first and foremost, is towards its citizens living in this country. Our government has a duty of care for those citizens and has to protect their health and safety. If it means inconveniencing or offending the Chinese in any way so be it. We cannot afford a coronavirus epidemic sweeping through our country, clogging our already over stretched hospital and health system. On another note when it comes down to the record numbers of overseas students from India, China, Nepal etc. wanting to study here I am very sceptical. Can some one from our government please advise, based on past years figures, as to how many of these students have the ultimate aim of gaining the much sought after Australian citizenship, which in turn will allow them down the track to bring in family members. I would hazard a guess and say the majority and regard this as another issue the idiots in Canberra have to address immediately.

Hunters Hill Guest Column What we can give up for lent Lent is the forty days (not counting Sundays, which are a “day off”) before Easter. It is an opportunity for Christians, through prayer, reading the bible, and acts of service and devotion, to deepen their faith. By doing so we hope to be people who not only receive new life, but share that life with others. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (26th February 2019), the day after Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday). The 40 days reflect the 40 years of the Hebrews going through the desert and the traditional 40 days of Jesus fasting in the wilderness. The aim is for our Lenten practices to become the “norm” of our daily lives, and continue beyond Lent as we come to find them as life giving (to us, our families and our community). We don’t just take something up or give something up for that time. Lent is the time we try and put something new into practice. While Lent is a spiritual practice for Christians, it

To The POINT

with Rev Armstrong could be a practice that anyone might partake in to fast from that which causes brokenness and destruction, and feast on all that is life giving. It has often been a time when people have given up something that has a negative impact on them and others. Some often give up chocolate however, while this is noble, the real aim is to give up something that might have a permanent impact on your life. For example, giving up complaining, or gossip, or time on social media – all of which can have a massive positive impact upon our lives, and that of others. I often suggest to people that we should not just give something up, but instead we should use Lent to feast on something (take something up). Perhaps take up time for a walk each day, more time with your family, time to pray or read, time to truly think or reflect, take up five minutes of going and

gazing at the sky or the water? In our ultra-busy world, taking up something can sound very hard, but if we take up the right things, than this can bring life, and life in abundance. For Christians Lent is a time to think on the sacrifice of Jesus, and recognise the immensity of His gift. We see the model of sacrifice and either give up or take up something, even something small, because we know that when we do God enters in and uses our gifts to bring His kingdom even closer – a kingdom where love, peace, hope and joy are the norm. That is also the hope of Lent, that such a kingdom might begin on earth as in heaven (imagine if we had a break out of peace this Lent ? ). Praying you an abundant and life-giving Lent! Rev Michael Armstrong is from the Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill.

Virus scare also hits West Ryde

Dear Sir, I have heard that the Ryde Council will be handing out $2,000 grants exclusively to the Eastwood business owners to financially assist them for coronavirus related business loss. I operate a cafe in West Ryde. As the result of Coronavirus scare, our cafe has lost approximately 50 percent of our income. Coronavirus scare is not only affecting Eastwood shopowners. It is also affecting West Ryde. In the past two weeks, two shops have already closed down. I think it is unfair for the Ryde Council to provide an “exclusive” financial assistance to Eastwood shop owners. Shop owners in West Ryde are located within the Ryde Council area, we pay rates like Eastwood shop owners, and why should we not benefit from the financial assistance! I hope Ryde Council can expand its coronavirus financial assistance to include other town centres in Ryde, and not just to the Eastwood shopowners! SUNNY KIM West Ryde

Anthony Roberts MP wins extension for residents to vent their ferry fury

An extension to the cut off date for local residents to vent their fury at ferry owner Transdev has been extended by a month. The extension follows lobbying by Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts who supports resident objections to a Transdev proposal to have some river and harbour ferry services terminate at Barangaroo to ease pressure on Circular Quay. Mr Roberts will also represent residents at an upcoming meeting of state cabinet where he has vowed to lobby Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

This action by the Lane Cove MP was welcomed this week by Hunters Hill councillors Ben Collins and Zac Miles. “It is absolutely vital to have a cabinet minister support the ferry fury cause and I commend Mr Roberts for fighting to have the consultation period extended,” Clr Collins said. New partnership creates new jobs in Hunters Hill

A partnership between Hunter’s Hill Council and group training organisation My Gateway is giving young workers an opportunity to learn on the job while receiving an academic qualification.

How volunteering can change your life

Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Gay Harris is a volunteer at IRT aged care in Woolwich. Gay writes that volunteering benefits both the care giver and the person who receives the care... “It is lovely that community level volunteers are appreciated and valued. “When you have the spare time, and health to do it, community service is a really wonderful and satisfying thing; it’s just a matter of finding the direction, and community need that is the right fit for you. “I have many vivid family memories of volunteer activities from childhood and adolescent days; it was a fundamental part of my old New Zealand mother’s life. “She called it Public Service Time. “The concept of it was private individuals, helping in a modest local community environment, at a grass roots level. “Today we call it volunteering; but the principle, to me, is the same. “I started retirement life volunteering at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. “I had spent a lot of time sitting there

in the chemo and radiotherapy treatment areas with my husband, and it seemed like a good place to help with community service. “But it just wasn’t right for me; the patients came and went, and there were so many volunteers. “It was really hard to add value, diversity, or joy in any form, to people’s lives. RPA was just too big and faceless. “Then, a good friend’s Mum had to move to aged care, and my friend asked me to help her old Mum settle in to the new unknown and unwelcome environment. “And so began my volunteer association with IRT Woolwich, an aged care home. “That was nearly seven years ago and I’m still there!” “I help with anything that adds value of the residents day to day lives, things like recreational activities, local Hunters Hill outings, shopping, medical appointments, trips to the library, or just being a person to talk to, or make a cup of tea, home made afternoon teas, birthday cards for family members, and anything that adds diversity

to residents lives.” I try to be a happy, unobtrusive, useful addition to other people’s lives, where the person has a need.” “William Shakespeare gave us a good simile to volunteer efforts, centuries ago, in his play, The Merchant of Venice. I am sure you know it.” The quality of mercy is not strained. It dropeth as the gentle rain from heaven. It is twice blessed. It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes. “This is so true of volunteer activities in that it’s rewarding, interesting and satisfying to me. As well as adding quality of life, diversity, stimulation, independence, and value, to people around me. And isn’t that a joyful thing to do.” “I highly recommend, and commend experiencing what pleasure and fulfilment, that volunteer involvement can bring to you.” Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Gay Harris is pictured with the 2019 Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Peter Astridge OAM.

How does gut health affect weight loss?

By Candace Sciberras Dietician, One Point Health

Who would have thought the bacteria and health of your gut could affect your ability to lose weight? Well, scientific studies have revealed it’s an important part of the weight loss mix. That’s not to say that eating healthy and exercise aren’t part of a healthy weight loss plan, because they most certainly are. However, recent research has discovered that another

important risk factor affecting obesity and weight management is the gut microbiome. The human gut microbiome houses several trillion microbes residing in the gastrointestinal tract.

These microbes have several important roles in the body, such as producing certain vitamins and hormones, communicating with the immune system, functioning of the digestive tract and regulating energy metabolism. Your gut bacteria lines your intestines and comes into contact with the food you ingest. Depending on the type and balance of bacteria, it can determine the way your body utilises or “burns” calories from the food we consume. This means certain bacteria are more efficient at using energy as opposed to storing it. How to know if your gut bacteria is out of balance? Some of the symptoms that can be signs of an unhealthy gut include: upset stomach; sleep disturbances; skin irritation; and food intolerances. However in some cases, signs of an unhealthy gut can remain silent. Causes of your gut getting out of whack, include: consumption of added/refined sugars and processed foods; high stress,

trauma and fast paced living; excessive use of antibiotics; amd exposure to chemicals from manufactured products and environmental toxins. Think about how many of these you are exposed to on a daily basis. Finally, some remedies that can help you regain balance in your gut bacteria? • Probiotics - they are live microorganisms and can be found in fermented food such as kombucha and sauerkraut or as a nutritional supplement. • Prebiotics - these are indigestible food products that stimulate the growth of bacteria, already present in the colon. They can be found in certain vegetables, fruits or grains. • Bone broth - contains gelatin which contains amino acids (building blocks of protein), that are important for gut integrity and function. • A healthy diet rich in fibre, colourful plant foods, pre- and probiotic foods and limited in added and refined sugars, preservatives, additives and processed foods. • Reduction and management of stress

Farewell June Dally-Watkins OAM

TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen judging panellist

THE WEEKLY TIMES pays tribute to June Dally-Watkins OAM – a distinguished member of the TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen judging panel – who passed away on Sunday, aged 92.

June Dally-Watkins was an integral part of the annual Miss Eastwood event and inspired hundreds of contestants during her decades of service. Close personal friend and TWT Managing Editor John F Booth AM paid tribute to her. “June Dally-Watkins is an Australian legend and her contribution to the TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen judging panel was enormous and influential” he said. “She gave countless hours of advice and encouragement to every entrant and was always gracious, charming and thoroughly committed to every aspect of this famous annual event. “This inspiring Australian model understood that a festival queen needed to be a good ambassador for Eastwood and for this newspaper as well as being a role model for her generation. “She also had a deep appreciation of the role deportment and grooming has in the presentation of our entrants and how this prestigious event was much more than a beauty pageant. “The Weekly Times is saddened by her passing and knows that her legacy will continue to live on, in Eastwood, in Australia and overseas.” In 1950, she established the June Dally-Watkins school, which trained young Australian women in deportment and etiquette and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to business in 1993 “Not only do I want to transform the way they look but the way they think, the way they dream,” she said. More recently, she taught etiquette to millions of students across China, after co-founding the Dally Institute in Guangzhou in 2013. Widely acclaimed as Australia’s first supermodel, she famously turned down a marriage proposal from Hollywood star Gregory Peck but continued her close relationship with John Booth until her passing. Dally-Watkins was born in Sydney in 1927 and was raised in Watsons Creek, north of Tamworth, by her mother and grandparents. She moved to Sydney at the age of 15 with her mother, who launched her stellar career by taking her to Farmers Department Store where she became a model. In 1949 this beautiful young girl was named Model of the Year and the Most Photographed Model of the Year.

According to the Dally-Watkins ethos, the true test of beauty was in a girl’s elegance, style, charm and sophistication. “I think we definitely do need good etiquette because the human race should want to present itself in the very best way and be elegant and charming,” she said. Her advice to girls was to look fabulous at all times and when at home wear casual clothes and look even more fabulous. She was famous for creating the “Dally Stance” in which one foot would be tucked neatly behind the other when standing or sitting. In recent years she spoke out against girls’ dependency on mobile phones and thought it was very poor form to speak on a mobile phone during dinner. ABC Chairwoman Ita Buttrose agreed. “As well as being a beautiful woman and a model she knew how to teach people the art of being elegant, the art of being civilised,” she said. “I think her legacy is to be kind to one another and don’t forget to say please and thank you.” June Dally Watkins is reputed to be the first Australian woman to own and drive her own car. This famous TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen panellist is survived by four children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her family has asked for privacy and will release the details of her funeral at a later time. Alan Edwards, left, “hasn’t looked back” after addressing his hearing loss with cochlear implants.

What to do when hearing aids are no longer enough

One in three people over the age of 65 experience hearing loss, says Associate Professor Catherine Birman, Medical Director of Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC), a service of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). Associate Professor Birman says hearing devices such as a cochlear implant “keep people connected to their friends and family and their community” and for these people, implantable hearing solutions are an option when their hearing aids are no longer enough. If hearing loss is not addressed by middle age, there is a higher risk of dementia. Associate Professor Birman recommends regular hearing tests after the age of 50. “We know that hearing loss can

lead to withdrawal, social isolation, depression and anxiety amongst older adults,” Associate Professor Birman said. Despite this, 90% of adults with hearing loss who could benefit from a cochlear implant don’t have one. Sydney man Alan Edwards has benefited from a cochlear implant. When Alan’s hearing loss increased over time, he became distant and as a result withdrew from society and, to some extent, his family. “It

was an effort to have conversations and to work hard at trying to hear,” he says. This left him feeling isolated. “When things become isolating there is a tendency to withdraw. Initially, I thought it [hearing loss] was just something I had to deal with. I thought it was inevitable.” Alan persisted with hearing aids despite them becoming “physically painful”. But hearing aids were not enough. Having experienced the benefits firsthand, Alan now ad-

Rydalmere) during peak periods and a,limited stop service from Sydney Olympic Park to Barangaroo. In the last two editions, The Weekly Times exclusively reported the ferry fury in Hunters Hill, Canada Bay and Ryde which has prompted Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and Drummoyne MP John Sidoti to seek the intervention of State Transport Minister Andrew Constance. Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer is the latest high profile public figure to join the fight to axe the proposal. “While Council supports more frequent services, we don’t support the cancellation of direct connections between Parramatta and Circular Quay and the complete removal of weekend express services,” he said. “Relocating our ferry service to Barangaroo is a significant concern to Council. “Circular Quay is Sydney’s central tourist and transport hub – losing that direct connection will likely impact our tourism and visitation objectives. “The proposed plans also fail to consider the need for faster, more frequent services to support the future population, jobs growth and tourism opportunities in Parramatta as the Central River City.” The Lord Mayor said he will lobby Transdev as

well as the state government. “We look forward to working with Transdev and Transport for NSW as these changes are further refined and considered by the government to ensure the best outcome for the Parramatta community.” In addition to its submission to Transdev, which was endorsed at the last council meeting, the Lord Mayor will be writing to state politicians and other affected councils to discuss the proposed changes. He said his council is also advocating for smaller, low impact vessels and more frequent services between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park. “The ferry to and from the Parramatta CBD is hugely important to the people who live, work, study and visit our great and growing City, “With the development of the new Powerhouse Precinct, and Parramatta Square fast becoming a jobs hub, the ferry line will play an even bigger role in connecting commuters to Sydney’s Central River City in coming years. “We encourage any residents, workers or visitors who may be affected by the proposed changes to have their say.” Pictured Above: A Rivercat on the Parramatta River – but will it go all the way to Circular Quay ?

Memorial proposed for tragedy children

THE CHILDREN killed in the tragic Oatlands car accident could be recognised with a memorial. The City of Parramatta Council is proposing to install a memorial to commemorate the four children who tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident at Oatlands earlier this month.. Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer and councillors have offered condolences to the family and friends of siblings Antony, Angelina, and Sienna Abdallah, and their cousin Veronique Sakr, and resolved to consult with the families on an appropriate memorial. “It was a horrific tragedy that shocked and saddened us all,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said. “Our hearts break at the terrible loss of young, innocent lives. “The outpouring of support and tributes has been incredible. “It reflects the profound impact that this tragedy has had, not only on the tight-knit Oatlands community but right across Australia. “We would like to honour the lives of these beautiful children with a dedicated memorial.” Following feedback from the community since the accident, Council will also introduce traffic-calming measures in the area. These include the installation of a pedestrian guardrail along the section of Bettington Road where the incident occurred, and a roundabout at the intersection of York and Bettington Roads. “While police have not identified the road condition to be a factor in this incident, Council has listened to the local community,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said. “These measures have been identified by Council as appropriate ways to help reinforce the area’s 50km/h speed limit and ease community concerns about pedestrian safety along Bettington Road.” Council will consult the community about the installation of a roundabout, which will be subject to approval through the Parramatta Traffic Committee. The parents of the children killed by an alleged drunk driver have been praised by Christians for their strong Maronite Catholic faith and their willingness to forgive the driver involved.

Hunters Hill declares a state of emergency

Wednesday 26 February, 2020 THE WEEKLY TIMES 11

A State of Climate Emergency was declared by Hunters Hill Council on Monday night. The declaration states that: “Human induced climate change represents one of the greatest threats to humanity, civilisation and other species and that it is still possible to prevent the most catastrophic outcomes if societies and communities, including local councils take action to reduce our impact on our environment.” Under the terms of the declaration, General Manager Lisa Miscamble will report back to councillors with “realistic and attainable goals” that include changes to the Local Environment Plan, the Development Control Plan as well as reforms to all works and services undertaken by the council. It was passed by four votes to two, with Liberal councillors Zac Miles and Ben Collins voting against what they described as a token gesture that is not backed by practical, far reaching, decisive and immediate action. They proposed an amendment to the declaration that included the immediate installation of solar panels on all council buildings, waiving development application fees on all buildings with solar panels, giving priority status to solar power related development applications, holding council meetings during daylight hours and setting zero carbon emission targets. “I see climate change as the biggest issue of this decade and as the father of four young children I see this issue as more important than something to give lip service too, we have got to do something, we have got to have immediate outcomes,” Clr Collins said. He also objected to the word “emergency” on the grounds that it would frighten children. “I do not want to install fear into our children, I want to tell our children that we have solutions.” Speaking at the council meeting on behalf of young people was brave 13 year old Amelia Huxley, a local girl who attends St Andrews Cathedral School. She told the meeting that children are angry, sad and scared by what they perceive to be a lack of government action against man made climate change.

“I’m afraid that by the time I am old enough to make a change it will be too late,” she said. “I don’t want this to be the end, I want to have a life and a future. “We are the future, we are the next generation and we are the youth who are trying to make a change and we are not being taken seriously.” Amelia Huxley was one of several speakers at the meeting who represented a group or community in Hunters Hill and who called for the emergency declaration. The Reverend Michael Armstrong from All Saints Anglican Church in Hunters Hill spoke on behalf of many Christians from all denominations. “This is a most crucial issue because the stewardship of creation is paramount to my faith,” he said. “There is nothing more I want to do than nurture creation, this enormous blessing. “I will work with you (councillors) at all and every level and Father Kevin Bates OAM (Holy Name of Mary, Catholic Church) is on record that he, too, will work with you at all and every level.” Councillor Justine McLaughlin welcomed this commitment. “Pope Francis has declared a climate emergency and so have many, many countries,” she said. “We are next to the City of Ryde and the City of Canada Bay which have also declared a climate emergency, regardless of their politics and have joined more than one hundred other councils to do so.” The medical profession was represented by Clinical Psychologist Louise Shepherd who spoke about the concerns of her clients and her own concerns for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions who have suffered during recent heat waves and bushfires. “My own children are six and eight and I shudder to think what their future lives will be like,” she said. A chartered accountant spoke for the local business sector and she described the battle against climate change as “the most important battle” ever faced by civilisation. For Clr Elizabeth Krassoi, the declaration is as much a family matter as it

TWT on-the-spot PHOTO is a municipal one. “I want to look to my children and to my grandchildren and say that we were on the right side of history tonight.” No one spoke against the theory of man made climate change but Clr Zac Miles was pragmatic. “Realistically we are not going to change the world, we are just Hunters Hill Council,” he said. “We are not climate leaders, honestly we’re not and to do something realistic with real, tangible outcomes is what we should be on about.” Councillor Ross Williams argued that while the issue of climate change is a global issue, Hunters Hill is part of a global community. “It takes a much bigger, organised effort than what we can do but we can do our bit.” The General Manager’s report will include environmental protection proposals from local students. Mayor Mark Bennett was absent from the meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Mayor Jim Sanderson.

The City of Ryde is asking the community for its views on a proposed new bike and kayak hire kiosk at Kissing Point Park in Putney, as part of ways to further activate the use of parks along Parramatta River.

Under the proposal, the kiosk would allow residents to hire bikes and kayaks and also include a small scale caf,. Kissing Point Park, east of the ferry wharf has been identified as the preferred site for the kiosk due to its accessibility, interface with the river and supporting infrastructure. The proposal for the bike and kayak kiosk was endorsed by Council after a motion was put forward by Clr Penny Pedersen (pictured) who told The Weekly Times it will realise a vision for the Parramatta River waterfront. “This is one of the priorities of Parramatta River Master Plan,” she said. “We want people to connect with this beautiful river, especially if they live in a flat and do not have a backyard or a stor-

age facility for bikes. “It also encourages people who live outside the City of Ryde to catch a ferry here to Ryde and I especially encourage people who live in Rhodes to come here and enjoy a wonderful day out with bikes and kayaks. “I particularly hope that families will enjoy a day by the river because we will have big bikes and little bikes for hire. “We also look forward to hearing from familes with their good ideas.” The proposed bike and kayak kiosk is part of several new infrastructure improvements taking place at Kissing Point Park. In addition kiosk, the City of Ryde is also upgrading the boat ramp at Kissing Point Park, while the NSW Government is

also upgrading the Kissing Point Ferry Wharf as part of its Transport Access Program. Councillor Roy Maggio had proposed the concept of a kiosk as part of his policy prior to the last council election. “My idea was not to have a kiosk compete with the local shops as a cafe but to have a mobile kiosk on hand to provide refreshments on the weekend,” he said. “It has also been my aim to have the kiosk located in proximity to the Kissing Point ferry wharf.” Further information and to make a submission on the new kiosk and the upgrade to the boat ramp can be found at www. ryde.nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay/Have-your-Say/ Kissing-Point-Park-Upgrades

Events for children will be held from 5pm until 8pm. The street party celebrates the upgrade of Coulter Street - between Trim Place and Linsley Street - and is part of Council’s commitment to creating vibrant town centres. The upgrade includes improved footpath

space as well as new seating, landscaping and eye-catching lighting fixtures. “The Coulter Street Party will be the perfect way for everyone to welcome in the weekend,” City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale said. “As was demonstrated with the recent West Ryde Summer Series, this Council is committed to providing the community with more fun and exciting events for everyone to enjoy. “So I hope everyone can get down to Coulter Street on 6 March

and enjoy some great entertainment while also checking out Council’s Coulter Street upgrade.” The street festival is being supported by the neighbouring Gladesville RSL Club whose CEO Ashley Parmenter said he looks forward to it. “It is a fantastic event for Gladesville and a fantastic event for us,” he said. “The whole block looks fantastic after being redeveloped by the council and we look forward to being a vibrant part of the area when our own refurbishment is sched-

uled to be completed in April.” Councillor Roy Maggio said he hopes the street festival - which is part of a $1.5 million dollar upgrade of the local precinct - will build on the success of the recent street festival in Putney. “The street fest in Putney exceeded all expectations and was packed from morning until dusk,” he said. “Local businesses did a thriving trade and I hope this festival in Coulter Street will bring more people back to Gladesville.”

Opportunity for sneak peak of Arden’s impressive new facility

The families of prospective new Arden Anglican School students will get an opportunity to see its brand new, five-story Secondary Campus in Epping at its annual Open Day this month.

The school launched the new ‘Essex’ complex with a ribboncutting ceremony to commemorate the first day of teaching and learning complex. Architects, Stanton Dahl, along with builders Lipman Group, have created a resourceful and seamless connection between Arden’s existing building and the new structure. The entire campus has been reimagined and the result is a logical layout and flow between the two facilities. Featuring biophilic design and environment friendly technology, this new 21st Century building is both impressive and functional. “The new building creates a learning hub within the Secondary School campus,” said Mr Matthew Mallison, Head of Middle School, “centralising facilities geographically, both horizontally and vertically”. Other features include new administration and student services centre, Science

laboratories, Food Technology kitchen, Resource Centre, Technology workshops, Multimedia and Design laboratories, two multi-purpose courts and a rooftop passive recreation area. Located in the heart of this new building is the Arden Creative Arts Centre. This space, around which there is much community anticipation, will seat 600 guests and is designed to be utilised by all students from Pre-school to Year 12. “It is the space where we will gather as a community, where we will worship, celebrate, perform and entertain,” said Principal, Mr Graham Anderson. “It is the spiritual and cultural heart of Arden and we give thanks to God for the provision of our new vertical Secondary School.” Just as in 1922, when Arden was founded at Beecroft, and which continues to be the School’s Primary School cam-

pus, the School has continued a special connection to Shakespeare’s ‘Forest of Arden’. On arrival at the School’s reception you are instantly struck by a stunning two storey installation to welcome guests. Featuring fabric panels, vinyl decals and floating foliage, it depicts a contemporary lowpoly interpretation of The Forest of Arden. This feature creatively connects the School’s Christian Values, the Garden of Eden, the leafy environment of the Beecroft campus and the notion of students flourishing at the School. Registration to attend Open Day on Friday, March 13, commencing 9am is essential atwww.arden.nsw.edu.au Top left, Arden Anglican School Principal, Graham Anderson, cut the ceremonial ribbon with students to unveil ‘Essex’; and left, a view of the new, five-storey complex

Marsden High School’s Open Day on March 3

Marsden High School is throwing open its doors to prospective students and their families, with its Open Night on Tuesday, March 3. The evening will start with registration and a bbq at 4pm, for an informal welcome with existing students and staff. At 4:30pm the formal presentation in the school hall will begin, followed by guided school tours. The tours are designed to showcase all aspects of the school, including the hospitality kitchen, technology rooms, creative and performing arts spaces, library, classrooms and more. The theme for the Open Night is Connections – Opportunities – Excellence, three areas that Marsden has a keen focus on. “Building connections is crucial for success at school and Marsden is proud of its strengths in ensuring our students are happy, safe and supported,” said Mr Lance Berry, Principal. “We offer a range of supports, individualised to students’ needs, including learning support and wellbeing programs, year adviser and other advisers’ support and our Positive Behaviour for Learning Program, which reinforces our CARE values – Cooperate, Achieve and Respect Every day.” Head Teacher Junior School, Ms Hiba Rizk, said there is also a comprehensive transition program for local Year 5 and Year 6 students each year, to help reduce any anxiety associated with starting high school. “This includes ‘A Taste of High School’ day, Science Club sessions, WINGS Gifted and Talented Day and liaising with our partner primary schools to identify students requiring individualised transition support. We want to build those connections before they even start high school.” Marsden offers a range of extra-curricular activities that give students the opportunities to succeed in their areas of interest. These include sporting gala days and knockout competitions, mock trial, debating, dance, cheerleading, band, art club, student magazine,

academic competitions, environmental and social justice teams, various leadership teams and more. As well as providing connections and opportunities that support students to achieve their personal best, Marsden also has a number of programs specifically focused on building excellence. These include the Pinnacle Program, a student enrichment program designed to extend and challenge high performing students in Year 7 and Year 8. “We also offer accelerated courses to those students capable of working beyond their cohort. We had one Year 8 student and a number of Year 11 students sit their HSC mathematics courses last year, and many of them achieved Band 6 results, which is a great outcome,” Mr Berry said. To learn more about what Marsden has to offer, make sure you attend their upcoming Open Night, starting at 4pm on Tuesday 3 March. Principal Lance Berry

Four young local sailors to rub shoulders with their sport’s elite

Inspire program participants on the water last week (image supplied)

As the world’s top sailors prepare for the first event of SailGP Season 2, 60 young people have been given the chance to rub shoulders with world-class athletes in Sydney through the SailGP Inspire program. Representatives from Hunters Hill and Riverside Girls high schools participated in the summit on February 20 at the Hunters Hill Town Hall.

Youth Summit showcases environment ideas

Students from Hunters Hill High School and Riverside Girls High School took part in a Youth Summit at the Town Hall last week. The Youth Summit developed plans to reduce schoolyard waste and improve the efficiency of classroom lighting. Hunter’s Hill Council hosted the summit, which was facilitated by professional training and coaching organisation

FRANK. The Youth Summit was created to bring the students together together with a goal to develop real projects that reduce litter or divert waste from landfill. Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett said the students

brainstormed a wealth of innovative ideas during the Youth Summit. ”Schools nominated students who were passionate about creating change in the world,” Mayor Bennett said. “Projects that addressed well-being were

also discussed and students worked in teams on project plans and pitched these to their peers, teachers, facilitators and Council representatives. ”Our council will now consider the projects and potential ways to support and deliver them.”

Hunter’s Hill Sailing Club’s Stella Hurley and Tom Quinlan and Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Sailing Club’s Mackenzie Mayne and Jack Rusticcia, involved in the Inspire Racing x RS Cat14 program, have been selected to rub shoulders with the world’s best sailors in the fastest sailing race, Sydney SailGP, when it returns to Sydney Harbour this week. Sydney SailGP marks the return of Inspire Racing x RS Cat14 program. Working in coordination with local yacht clubs, Inspire selected teams of two (one boy and one girl under the age of 15) that will take to the water tomorrow (February 27). Selected for their ambition and talent, they’ll get the chance to race a portion of the Sydney Harbour course, meet the SailGP teams and receive behind-the-scenes access. The Inspire Careers program will give 16 students between the ages of 18 to 23 the opportunity to work across several areas of the SailGP organization, including the technical team, hospitality and event management, on-water operations, media and communications, race management, and sustainability. The program started in the week leading up to the event and provides students with a hands-on experience and inside look at what it takes to execute a global sporting spectacle.

Fined builder seeks exemption to protect the Lane Cove River

Concord West graduate makes a large splash at Sydney Water

Ryde builder Ivan Elek took photographs of work being done on his drive to show how steep it is and how sand and silt would be washed into the Lane Cove River unless the site was secured.

A NORTH RYDE builder fined $6,000 for work he said he did to protect the environment has called for special exemptions to state legislation.

Concord West resident Elise Walsh (pictured) has secured a place on the highly coveted 2020 Sydney Water Graduate Program. The new graduate in Communication and International Studies from UTS is one of just 13 selected from over 1700 applications received from university students across Australia. “I applied for Sydney Water’s Graduate Program because of its great reputation. “It is ranked Number Two in the top Graduate Programs nationally. “After having worked part time in a PR agency for consumer products, I realised I would like to do something more meaningful that did a public and community good. “Communicating drought related content during the worst drought our city has ever experienced is exciting and I know that it will be an

experience that will teach me a lot.” This year Elise will be working as a part of Sydney Water’s Drought Response Communications Team. “I hope to contribute to the drought relief through honest, thought-provoking and behaviour changing communication,” she said. “Particularly, I would like to break through to the younger generation and engage with them to want to do their part during these conditions.” Sydney Water’s Program Specialist Susan Bentley said the awardwinning program allows Sydney Water to draw on the best candidates coming through universities across a range of fields including digital and analyt-

ics, engineering, science, finance and communications. “Graduates are offered a four-year rotational program with up to four, 12 month work placements. During this time, we help them to discover their potential through a range of learning opportunities,” Ms Bentley said. “The program develops our future leaders and we focus on harnessing the diversity of thought, experiences and perspectives our graduates bring.” Sydney Water’s graduate program provides on the job experience and learning opportunities to university graduates, including a two-week induction period to help with the transition from university to full-time work.

Victor Dominello launches cyber partnership projects Ryde MP Victor Dominello launched a new cyber initiative in partnership with the CSIRO last week. Mr Dominello said the NSW Spatial Digital Twin - delivered in partnership with CSIRO’s Data61 - will provide 3D and 4D digital spatial data and models of our built and natural environments, that will improve planning and community engagement. “The Spatial Digital Twin will allow us to better plan infrastructure, precincts and communities by providing real-time information and visualisation of buildings, roads, hospitals, schools and libraries, even before construction begins,” Mr Dominello said. This digital workbench will allow all parties to

visualise both historical data whilst also preparing for future infrastructure by using above and below ground modelling from data obtained through water, energy and telco utilities. “A picture paints a thousand words – being able to visualise a project before it starts means we can plan for and predict future outcomes. “The interactive tool includes 22 million trees with height and canopy attributes, almost 20,000km of 3D roads, and 7,000 3D strata plans and 546,206 buildings. “Western Sydney is an

economic powerhouse with a pipeline of projects underway including the aerotropolis. “This new tool will be a game changer for all stakeholders by enabling projects to be digitally planned before shovels hit the ground.” He said it will continue to be developed in collaboration with local, state and federal government agencies and industry partners to expand its capacity beyond just Western Sydney. Ivan Elek was hit with the fine in November last year for work he insists he carried out to stop sand and silt being washed from a driveway works site into the Lane Cove River. The work was found to breach a Stop Work Order the City of Ryde Council had placed on the property at 257 Pittwater Road, which Mr Elek insists he has otherwise complied with. “Work was stopped on the building site to comply with the council order. “I find this fine quite unfair and see it as another way to upset our family in our present crisis, when we’ve had to stop work and engage lawyers to ensure the site fully complies with new bushfire control requirements, after the site was initially approved by a private certifier. “The only work on the driveway was done to stop the sand and the silt being washed down a steep slope, into the gutter, where it would pick up oil and other pollution and be washed straight into the river,” he said.“I’m even collecting the run off water. “I had previously taken other measures to protect the river, which is only a few metres away, including bringing in special bags from Queensland, but the work we did on the driveway was the last and only option to secure the earth and stop the silt run-off.” He said he had met with council officers and was under the impression this environmental protection measure could be exempted. “I was stunned by the fine and the amount of the fine .. for the average builder six thousand dollars is six weeks wages,” he said. The fine issued by the City of Ryde’s Environmental

Protection Officer states that an inspection on Tuesday, November 5 revealed that a new driveway construction had been commenced including excavation at the property, despite a Stop Work Order in place and after several verbal instructions by council officers to stop building works. “I assume council officers had to act, but the only work done on the actual building itself was on a flight of stairs next to roadway to satisfy a building code,” Mr Elek said. The North Ryde builder said he wants the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act to be amended to allow the Environmental Planning Authority to have the power to grant an exemption to a council Stop Work Order to allow environmental protec-

tion measures to be carried out. “If there was a sign up at the driveway giving me an exemption to do work to stop the silt from the driveway running off into the river I would not have been fined and the river would be protected,” he said. Mr Elek said he sees numerous examples where work has stopped at building sites across Ryde and unsecured silt runs off into the Lane Cove River and the Parramatta River. Although these run-offs breach environmental laws they are mostly enforced by periodic blitzes and this issue was raised several times at previous council meetings by former Clr Jeff Salvestro-Martin. When asked by The Weekly Times if the driveway works could be seen as

an attempt to build a pathway to allow works vehicles to access the site – despite the Stop Work Order – Mr Elek insists it was not. He also revealed that he had been fined for parking a truck in proximity to a roadway marking. “It has been there parked regularly since September 2018 when we started building,” he said. “I now have permission to park vehicles at the local RSL Club, so the are not parked on site or even on the footpath.” Mr Elek has now raised his issue with Clr Roy Maggio and hopes Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts can seek the proposed “environmental protection” changes to the Act. Councillor Maggio has previously challenged fines issued by council officers.

Charlie has made a temporary home on top of a filing cabinet at the World League For Protection Of Animals showroom in Gladesville where team at the World League describes him as a loving and affectionate cat that longs for human companionship. “Do you have a big heart for our Charlie?

Guard of honour for Janette De Vries Brush Park/Carlingford charity bowls day on Sunday February 23 raised almost $500 for the McGrath Foundation for Breast cancer.

The ladies from Brush Park, Denistone and Carlingford Bowling Clubs this morning formed a guard of honour to farewell fellow bowler Janette Lee (Jan) De Vries who passed away last week after a short illness. Jan was much loved by her fellow bowlers and we were all shocked to hear of her illness (cancer) which was only diagnosed eleven weeks ago. She loved her bowls and entered and won many competitions. She played Pennants and social bowls first at Ryde-Eastwood then at Brush Park. Jan died on 15th February, two days after her 76th birthday. She’ll be sadly missed.

TWT Ryde Sports Foundation Finalists Sydney’s young guns to the rescue for morale boosting win ahead of derby

Two late goals by Sydney FC’s young guns Harry Van der Saag and Marco Tilio have given the Sky Blues a morale boost ahead of the highly anticipated local derby with Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday night. Tilio and Van der Saag were the heroes, with the Sky Blues now 13 points clear at the Hyundai ALeague summit after defeating the Central Coast Mariners 3-0. Milos Ninkovic opened the scoring in the 8th minute latching onto a mistake by Miller in the Mariners back line to flick the ball past Birighitti. The emphatic victory comes after last week’s demoralising 4-0 thumping at the hands of Angelo Postecoglou-coached Japanese champions, Yokohama F. Marinos, in the Sky Blues’ debut fixture of the 2020 AFC Champions League. Meanwhile, German Sydney FC star Alexander Baumjohann is looking for more Sky Blue love in his first home Sydney Derby against his former club, at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. Baumjohann joined the reigning Champions at the start of the 2019/2020 Hyundai A-League season

and says there are no regrets heading into the clash on Friday night. “Not everyone is happy that I left but I’ve also said this before that I don’t care about them and the most important thing to me is that our fans love me and that’s what I care about,” he said. “[On opposing fans heckling] That’s normal when you change from one side to the other in the city but it’s been really fun, especially when we’ve had success on the pitch. “I’ve said it 100 times before, it was so easy for me to join this club. All the guys are just nice people and made me feel at home after a short time.” Sydney FC sit atop the Hyundai A-League ladder and have the chance to further extend its lead on Friday night. And Baumjohann admits the last Sydney Derby loss was an impressive performance for his side and is confident they can get the

three points in this one. “It was one of our best games, we had so many chances and we could have won. It’s hard to accept that it was the only game we lost,” he said. “We are pretty confident now and we’ve worked really hard to get back into it, we’re in good form and we have a really good chance to win the game.

Three finalists in this year’s TWT Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year contest were presented at Gladesville RSL Community Club last Friday night. They are Paralympic triathlete Nic Beveridge, baseballer Brandon Lee and netballer Georgia Marshall. They will compete with the other twelve grand finalists at the Gala Presentation Night at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club on Friday May 1. They are pictured with Ryde Sports Foundation chairman Jim Hull OAM, Gladesville RSL Club president Jim Butt, North Ryde RSL Club president Jim Morris and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club president Jim McClymont.

Basketball star Brittany Smart joins City of Ryde councillors Jordan Lane, Roy Maggio, Penny Pedersen and Trenton Brown to cut the ribbon to officially open the new basketball court at Morrison Bay on the weekend.

New basketball court for Putney opened on the weekend Upgraded facilities at Morrison Bay Park in Putney were officially opened on the weekend with a special three-on-three community basketball event held.

Womens Basketball League star player Brittany Smart was on hand for the official opening along with members of the Sydney Thunder cricket team and Inner West Bulls basketball team.

The extensive upgrades include a number of new and improved outdoor recreation facilities that include a new two-thirds basketball court, additional cricket nets, outdoor fitness equipment, new pe-

destrian footpaths, new pedestrian lighting and new access ramps to and from the existing footbridge The upgrades were undertaken by the City of Ryde, with funding assistance from the State

Government’s Stronger Communities Fund. City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said the new and improved facilities were part of the City of Ryde’s commitment to provide more outdoor recreational opportuni-

ties for the entire community. “The upgrades mean Morrison Bay Park now has first-class outdoor equipment and sporting infrastructure that is supported by a 1.3 kilometre fitness trail,”

he said. “In addition, the new pedestrian lighting along the existing foreshore and eastern footpaths will encourage more people to use the park during the evening. “I thank everyone in

the community who participated in the consultation process that helped shape this project, as well as the State Government for providing funding to Council to help complete the upgrade.”

Madge and the Tigers preselection team have done a sterling job in recruiting a side that will knock the socks off all before them as they rage onto NRL premiership honours in 2020!

The new look 2020 Tigers have a good balance all round the park and will create a few tremors in the opposition before the year is through! And the beauty of this year is that we have top players competing against each other just to make the firsts team. It’s a welcome headache to have compared with recent years. So the tip is to make sure you get set with the Ma-in-Law’s Funeral Fund on the Tigers Grand Final winning side before the odds peak.

They won’t get any better as the bookies reset their books as they see the rampaging Tigers roaring through the opposition like a hot knife through ice cream. Let’s make sure Leichhardt Oval HQ is packed to overflowing for the first home game of the year on Sunday arvo March 22 when the Tigers will reveal their class with the likes of our secret weapons Adam Doueihi pictured left and Billy the Kid Walters pictured right.
