Coronavirus pandemic has affected all our lives and community activities
All our lives have been turned upside down as a result of this dreaded coronavirus scourge which is currently raging in many parts of the world and creating havoc in the community.
Nobody is immune from its effects on family and community life with lockdowns and clubs, pubs and meeting places closed by order of the State and Federal authorities. Most of our community notices and informations this week are about cancellations and postponements rather than the usual numerous events, celebrations and meetings to be held. Please read and take notice of all the warnings and notices of health care to ensure your safety and survive this period of uncertainty. We look forward to your company next week and the days ahead.

Australia’s favourite showbags now available online. Showbags are uniquely Australian and have been bringing joy to families for over 50 years. Chicane Showbags has been involved with the Sydney Royal Easter Show for 20 years, providing Australia’s favourite showbags, including the much loved Bertie Beatle bag. Emily Williams, Co-Owner of Chicane Showbags, says she was devastated to hear the sad news that the Show won’t be going ahead this year. “The Sydney Easter Show is the largest event on our calendar and we have been planning for the last 12 months. We were so excited to bring our best range of showbags ever to the Show. While this is a huge blow for our small business, we understand the health of Australians is the most important thing.” “We are pleased to announce however that we have been working furiously to prepare our warehouse to despatch showbags and our full range is now available online. You may have missed out on the Easter Show, but you can still get your showbags – delivered to direct your door!” continued Ms Williams. Over 65 showbags will be available online so please support Australian business and buy atwww. showbagshop.com.au from today and all through Easter. “Like many small Australian businesses, we are doing what we can to adapt to the current situation. We hope that we can still deliver a little bit of joy to Australian families over the coming weeks during these uncertain times,” finished Ms Williams.

Eastwood fights back! Small businesses stand together against the virus
Wednesday 25 March, 2020 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5
COMPASSIONATE EASTWOOD will not be beaten by the virus and is fighting back. A new group was established by the Chinese speaking community in Eastwood this week to help closed small business through the delivery of essential goods and medicines to the owners and to other people in need. The Survival Alliance group was founded by Eastwood’s Jessie Lin and other community leaders with the support of local restaurants and other businesses with advice from Eastwood based Clr Simon Zhou. The first deliveries of essential goods began this week, Ms Lin told The Weekly Times. “Now, the COVID-19 is getting worse we hope we can help more small business owners and the peo-
ple who are afraid of the virus, to get better solutions and more confidence to fight this virus,” Ms Lin said. “Our aim is to help these small business owners to get through this tough time together and our very first step is to help those people who are self-quarantined at home. “For example, buying groceries together to get free delivery for those living in the local community. “The restaurant owners will provide take away and free home delivery services, to reduce the risks of getting affected. “Because of the help from Simon Zhou we can also educate people about how to
protect yourself by using Chinese herbal medicine.” The Survival Alliance is a non-profit organisation that relies on local donations. “Due to the travel ban, lots of small businesses in Eastwood have been impacted and are trapped in a very tough situation. “Lots of international students could not come back to study and left empty restaurants and vacant accommodations. “Travel agents lost their jobs and other businesses are really trying hard to survive. “We hope we can do more to help the local community.” The compassionate action by the Survival Alliance comes at a time when many char-
ities – including St Vinnies - have postponed home visits. “Many of our members are aged over 60 and most companions are living with existing health issues,” St Vincent de Paul Society National Council President, Claire Victory said. “Both groups are at higher risk of serious consequences should they become infected. “As a result, all home-based visitations will cease until further notice from the National Council. “Visitation will now occur at the discretion of the conference presidents and must take place by telephone or web-based care and support, or at a Vinnies shop or other facility.”

Important Message about Coronavirus Dear neighbour You may be feeling quite vulnerable and uncertain right now as we respond to this temporary global coronavirus pandemic. Information seems to be changing daily, with some confusion prevailing. If we don’t slow the spread of this virus, our health system will be overwhelmed within weeks. If this happens, many people of all ages will die. This is what is happening right now in Italy and elsewhere. That is why we have acted to limit people’s engagement with each other. These decisions are already having terrible economic repercussions, seeing the lines outside Centrelink this week has broken all our hearts. This week in Parliament all political parties united and passed massive new stimulus programs to respond to the economic impacts of our coronavirus fighting efforts. Information on our economic response to the coronavirus: www.treasury.gov.au/ coronavirus WARNING: All these sacrifices will be for nothing if people don’t do their part. Please don’t be an unwitting spreader of the virus by not following personal hygiene, social distancing and other guidelines. Information: www.health.gov.au/resources Senior citizens are most at-risk. The older a patient is, the higher the death rate. Especially in countries where the health system is overwhelmed. So, I especially recommend senior citizens exercise extreme social distancing, or even isolation, in an effort to avoid catching this terrible virus. A comprehensive factsheet for older Australians: www.health.gov.au/resources/ publications/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-older-australians Seniors (or anyone) in self-isolation: Ask your family, friends or neighbours for support. They will say: “Yes, what can I do?!” If you can’t for whatever reason get support, please contact me and I will connect you with a supportive neighbour willing to help – such as run errands, grab shopping or make a friendly phone call. The coming months will be the challenge of our lives, together we can rise to it, defeat it, and enjoy a brighter future. Call me with any questions, yours sincerely – John

Letters to the Editor Leadership in times of need Dear Sir, I know times are strange and I understand that some of our residents are scared. I want you to know that I will keep you informed of what I know as I know it. When Council have to change our services, I’ll update you. When health advice changes, I’ll let you know as soon as I do. The situation is fluid and things are changing fast, but know there are systems that work and that the people in charge, from the Prime Minister to the Premier, are doing their best. As you know I don’t agree with all their decisions, but they’re the ones who we chose to put in charge and they also need our support. I think our community is also looking for leadership and you have my commitment to support and represent you all in the City of Ryde. Leadership can also be even more local and I ask you all to take up this commitment. You can be a leader amongst your friends by downsizing or cancelling that party you were going to host, or by encouraging your mates to order take away from your favourite restaurant, instead of eating there. You can be a leader at home by teaching your kids how to wash their hands, and teaching them how to be kind and support each other. At the shops, you can be a leader by buying 2 of something instead of 10, and by reaching out to people who may be in need (from a safe distance of course). At work, you can be a lead-
er by changing that face to face catch up and meeting over the phone or via video and by purchasing from local businesses in any way you can. In times like these, it’s impossible for one leader to lead the country. Everyone needs to be a leader, and I’d encourage you all to be that person. Please take precautions, stay at home wherever you can, stop hoarding, and look after one another. If you’ve got symptoms, seek medical advice and if instructed to self-isolate, do it. In fact, self isolate better than anyone else. If you know someone that has lost their job or is doing it tough, reach out and support them anyway you can. Visit the NSW Health and City of Ryde websites for latest official updates. I’d be wary of rumours and posts and “I’ve heard.” Rumours will cause panic and endanger lives. Lastly, take care of one another. Whatever this is, it’s temporary. Our army of local leaders will help us get through this together. Clr JEROME LAXALE Mayor City of Ryde

government has a lot to answer for. It was 2002/2003 when the similar SARS epidemic first reared its ugly head. That also started in China. Experts agree that it was also transmitted from animals to humans through butchering/consumption. Once that became undisputedly clear the Chinese authorities should have shut down and banned all so called “wet markets” where poor live animals from bats to rats were sold for human consumption. The Chinese authorities should have made it a serious offence punishable by jail terms for any one selling or consuming these diseased or endangered animals. It is my belief that had the Chinese government taken stern action at that time to curb theses filthy, and vile practices none of this would have occurred. The Chinese government should be held liable for its neglect otherwise there could be another epidemic around the corner. TONY IKONOMOU Hunters Hill

spending $10 million dollars on a cycleway in Pittwater Road between Victoria Road and Epping Road, when that road has needed widening to 3 or 4 lanes for 20 years. Surely it would have been a better proposition to widen the road and incorporate a bicycle lane, as those who have waited in a 1 Km line of traffic in the mornings and evenings will surely attest too. With council elections coming in September, register your vote against this sort of stupidity. GERRY MANDERSON Gladesville
Ryde Councillors conduct criticised
Dear Sir, I write to alert you to the disgraceful and irresponsible behaviour of five Councillors at last Tuesday (March 17) evening’s Extraordinary Council Meeting. After we had dealt with the evening’s business the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Simon Zhou, stood with a matter of urgency. He was wanting Council to send a letter on behalf of Ryde’s Chinese community, and with the support of Eastwood’s Korean community, to the Prime Minister urging him to take stronger action to defeat the spread of COVID19. It should be noted that many of Ryde’s Chinese residents have direct family connections to the city of Wuhan and the Hubei province, and therefore have firsthand experience of the virus’s devastating power and understand the need for quick decisive action by authorities. But as soon as Clr Zhou began speaking on the motion, Councillors Yedelian, Brown, Lane and Moujalli packed up and left the meeting. As there were only eleven councillors attending the meeting that night, this left us with a quorum of seven councillors as required by the Code of Meeting Practice. But then, after listening to Clr Zhou speak for perhaps thirty seconds, Councillor Kim also left. The meeting was now inquorate and unable to continue, leaving the very serious concerns of both the Chinese and Korean communities in Ryde ignored and unrepresented by Council. A slap in the face. Councillors are elected on the promise that they will represent their constituents. We receive a stipend from ratepayers. The least the community can expect of all councillors is that they attend General and Extraordinary Council meetings, that they listen to all concerns and information presented, and then, after debate and consideration, vote as they see correct. Wilfully walking out of a meeting is an abnegation of their duties. This is not democratic representation. In truth, I have lost count of the number of times these same councillors have walked out of meetings over the last year. The Extraordinary Meeting has been reconvened to late on Tuesday (March 24) evening. Will these councillors walk out yet again if Clr Zhou puts his motion of urgency a second time? Will they even be there? Clr CHRISTOPHER GORDON Ryde City Council
Hunters Hill Guest Column Living in Hunters Hill in the 70s and 80s
I remember my first visit to Hunters Hill when I was a little girl, we had just returned to Australia from Italy.
I distinctly remember driving into this leafy suburb with tall trees and beautiful mansions in our beige Volvo Station Wagon. It was 1978 because I had just turned eight. As we drove into Mayfield Avenue we were welcomed by Uncle George (Dad’s younger brother). He was the cool Uncle driving all the flashy cars over the years from Convertible Mercedes Benz to Red Carrera Porsches. We loved visiting Uncle George because we got to play with our cousins, there were so many of us together because five seperate families had moved into the area all related to one another either by blood or marriage. *** IN FACT I think most Italian families in Hunters Hill back in the 70s and 80s were either related or inter generational friends from the motherland. All I can remember is that we were in paradise. My younger sister and brothers would often play on the Streets of Mayfield Ave either hitting a cricket bat, running, skipping or riding a bike. Sometimes we’d go to Uncle Sam’s place just three doors down on the waterfront and play in the boat-shed and take the dinghy out onto the Harbour.
To The POINT
with AURELIA-SOPHIA ROMAN It was a different time. We were free range kids allowed to hang out with our cousins and friends during the week and have sleepovers over the weekend. Life was bliss. In 1985 my parents finally bought their own home in Woolwich. We were so excited to be officially living in Hunters Hill and part of the Clan not just visitors anymore. We bought an unusual house perched on a rock with 360 degree views of the Harbour. We loved that house because it was our home, even if it was run down and old and needing serious renovations. So many fond memories, the one that I recall the most was the way we all entered the house because no one ever went through the front door. Instead it was customary to walk on the side of the house, up the wooden stairs into the balcony and through the window of the TV room! It was hilarious, You’d never knew who was visiting because you’d see the leg first before the face. It could have been anyone a sibling, a friend, an Uncle or Aunt you just never knew. *** WHAT CAN I say ..... crazy Italians. I guess everyone knew that the window was always unlocked and the best way to get into
the house was through the window our unofficial entry door. So many fond memories and as a family we immersed ourselves into the community, attended Church regularly and participated in many festivals. I went to the local High school, Marist Sisters Woolwich, and my younger siblings went to Villa Maria. I could go on and on and on but I just wanted to share with you what a wonderful childhood I had in Hunters Hill. So much so I convinced my husband at the time to live in the area so my children could experience it too. I’m proud to say my children are fourth generation Hunters Hillians and that is why I fought so hard to Save Hunters Hill from forced amalgamations. It was a David and Goliath battle and we won. That’s another story for another time, until then adios amigos. AURELIA-SOPHIA ROMAN Current resident of Hunters Hill
Our Community Response to the virus
We find ourselves in an unprecedented situation, not only here in Hunters Hill, but across the nation and the globe, as all feel, if not directly, the flow-on effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is at times like these that we see the strength and resilience of our tight-knit Hunters Hill community at its best, working together (albeit in many cases remotely) to support each other. At Hunter’s Hill Council, our focus continues to be on keeping our community and our staff safe and informed. We are taking proactive and precautionary steps to ensure that essential Council services can continue to be delivered during any COVID-19 outbreak. We have a small workforce, so minimising risk to frontline workers is in the best interests of being able to maintain service delivery to the community. Council is encouraging the community to use online and phone services, rather than visit the Customer Service Centre in Alexandra Street. If you are out in the community, please remember to maintain a four-metre distance from others where possible, wash your hands and sneeze or cough in to a tissue or your elbow.
HUNTERS HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor MARK BENNETT Most importantly, stay home if unwell. Council is also working closely with our community allies to support those residents most in need. Sydney Community Services is a central source for anyone in Hunters Hill or Lane Cove who either need to self-isolate or choose not to go outside if they worry they are at risk of being exposed to COVID-19. The organisation is collecting donations for a Foodbank to supplement urgent food deliveries to vulnerable residents and has been putting together a database of people who are in isolation, as well as seeking volunteers who are able to help others who need emergency supplies, or even just give social contact through a phone link. NOTIFICATION OF DEVELOPMENT CONSENTS In accordance with s101 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 and Clause 124 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulations 2000 the following Development Consents have been approved by Council for January 2020. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO RESIDENTS in Auburn Street in Hunters Hill are among residents in many local streets getting together to support each other. In a municipality known for being a close knit community, the Auburn Street residents are helping each other with shopping and other means of support as well as establishing email connections. Resident Kate Gardiner told The Weekly Times the Auburn Street residents are living up to the expectations of National Neighbour Day, which is celebrated on March 29. “From checking in on
neighbours to creating virtual social networks, communities in Hunters Hill are rallying to support each other,” she said. “We are very community minded and we are feeling like we need each other more than anything now and are talking about how we can keep the social connection whilst keeping physical distance in the coming months.” “There are a few people in Auburn Street that
are very outward-looking and see the importance of community and keeping our street connected.” Kate said the spirit of Auburn Street can be found across Hunters Hill. “And there are a lot of streets in Hunters Hill and Gladesville that have a street like ours,” she said. “I know I have a community of people I could call on at the drop of a hat if I needed it.” Electronic communica-
tion is a major way to keep in touch. Through the Facebook group Shout Out, residents in Gladesville are reaching out to the local community for a helping hand. The Shout Out Facebook provides links to people who are home alone and need groceries or help with errands. Members are able to post messages either about what they need or what they are able to give.
Hunters Hill and Canada Bay placed under the holy patronage of Our Lady of Lourdes The Shrine at Lourdes, France, is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, Patron of the Sick.
The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher OP also urged Christians to pray to Our Lady of Lourdes for victims of the new coronavirus and those most at risk of contracting the disease. “We have sadly seen a number of people die from coronavirus here in Sydney,” he said. “Let us entrust ourselves to the patroness of the sick Our Lady of Lourdes - as we pray for eternal life for them, consolation for their loved ones and healing for those who are ill at this time. “Please also remember our health workers in your prayers.” Hunters Hill’s largest annual religious procession – The Way of the Cross – was cancelled last week on the advice on Catholic, Anglican and other church authorities. Archbishop Fisher noted that St Peter’s Basilica in Rome has now been closed and that Pope Francis r has called on the Church to pray for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic that has now killed thousands. “We pray for the victims and their families, for health workers, and for the safety of those most at risk,” the archbishop said. “As the government ramps up precautionary measures, we are likely to face various restrictions on the life of worship, but the Church is determined to play its part in keeping people safe and bringing them healthcare and pastoral care of the sick”. The Archdiocese of Sydney has published its guidelines for coronavirus precautions on a dedicated page on its website sydneycatholic.org and will update the guidelines as new information becomes available. It said individuals should “consider their own health, including any potential to infect others with a contagious disease, before attending a public liturgical celebration”. Archbishop Fisher said that priests would continue to serve the sick, elderly and frail, including those suffering from the virus. Clergy would continue to minister to the most vulnerable by “absolving and anointing the sick, distributing Holy Communion to them, blessing and praying with them”, the archbishop said. Our Lady of Lourdes is regarded by Catholics and many other Christians as the Patron of the Sick after she appeared to St Bernadette at the Lourdes Grotto and is believed to have caused a spring of miraculous healing water to appear at the site.
Hunters Hill, the City of Canada Bay and other regions in the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney were dedicated to the patronage of Our Lady of Lourdes this week, in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

Ryde passes emergency powers to deal with virus crisis
EMERGENCY powers were passed by the City of Ryde last week in the event that councillors are struck down with the COVID-19 coronavirus or council meetings are cancelled by state health authorities. Last Tuesday night’s emergency meeting granted the emergency powers of delegated authority to Mayor Jerome Laxale and General Manager George Dedes despite concerns raised by Liberal councillors and Clr Dr Peter Kim that such powers could be open to political exploitation. Liberals Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM, Clr Trenton Brown, Clr Chris Moujalli and Clr Jordan Lane voted against a motion - backed by Mayor Laxale - to enact the powers. In an exclusive interview with The Weekly Times, Mayor Laxale said the most likely scenario the powers would be enacted would be if health authorities suspended council meetings to prevent the spread of the virus. He said that in the event that a council meeting did not have a quorum - due to councillors contracting the virus or required to self isolate - meeting agenda items would be held over until the next monthly meeting. In emergency or contentious cases, an extraordinary council meeting can be called within days of a cancelled meeting. When asked by this newspaper if the emergency powers gave him an opportunity to endorse voluntary planning agreements
or sign off on controversial financial tenders, the Mayor was adamant this would not be the case. “Anyone who says this is a power grab is lying,” he said. “Can I use these powers to approve a development application ...no, I cannot! “Can I sign off on a tender, no, because the law says I cannot sign off on a tender and I will not break the law.” The emergency powers do not prevent any councillors from challenging a decision made under delegated authority or enquiring about one that could be made. This scenario puts the onus on all councillors to be vigilant, a point raised at the meeting by Clr Jordan Lane. “Where possible, notice should be given in advance of a decision being made and if we are going to take an extraordinary step we should have an opportunity to talk about it among councillors,” he said. “Although I cannot imagine we would want to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement in the midst of a health crisis.” He raised a further point that the Office of Local Government could even move to scrap the emergency powers.
“If legislation makes our powers redundant, the government may want to appoint an administrator, we just don’t know.” A possible scenario is that Mayor Laxale and General Manager George Dedes are both stricken with the virus or are required to self isolate. In this scenario, the Mayor could opt to delegate his powers to Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou (or any other councillor) and the General Manager could delegate his powers to another manager. “This is not about delegated powers, it is about if I’m not here someone else can jump in,” Mr Dedes told the meeting. “it means that if I’m gone, you’ve got people to run the council.” Comments made by Clr Dr Peter Kim hint at the possibility that a political faction may not have numbers to carry a vote at a meeting (due to an illness) and the whole faction could feign illness to prevent a quorum and default to the emergency powers. “If you are not clear whether or not the councillors have a virus, how do you enact this..what is wrong with councillors having to bring medical certificates to trigger this power?” he said.
At times, Mayor Laxale barely hides his contempt for those who push political conspiracy theories in a debate about how to keep critical council services going in the midst of a pandemic. “It is absurd to suggest that we should want to take power away from an elected body, that is absolutely absurd!” he said. There is no ulterior motive, this is about serving our community in times of crisis.°± Mayor Laxale said he hopes the State Government will legislate to allow teleconferenced council meetings. If this happens, as is the case in South Australia, these emergency powers will not even be necessary.°± Councillor Penny Pedersen wants teleconferencing extended to committee meetings. ∞If one of us at a committee meeting contracted the virus, we°Ød all have to go into lockdown but a digital platform would mean we could meet, this is about moving forward if this council cannot meet.°± The City of Ryde website has daily updates on how the virus impacts on the City of Ryde and any changes to council services.
Councillors defend their walkout on virus emergency debate
The Liberals on the City of Ryde Council have defended last week’s walk out on a proposed emergency debate about the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus on the local Chinese and Korean speaking communities.

The proposed debate was called by Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou at the end of last week’s emergency council meeting about delegated authority in the event of council meetings being postponed due to the virus. The Deputy Mayor sought to table his letter to the Prime Minister which raises local Chinese and Korean speaking community concerns about how the government is handling the epidemic. There was no debate because the four Liberal councillor’s and Labor’s Clr Dr Peter Kim left the meeting without a quorum. “I was shocked by the walk out and after that I felt upset because the concerns of two large communities were not even listed too,” Deputy Mayor Zhou said. “I feel that those councillors who walked out on an emergency motion about this virus only care about their own political agenda.” Mayor Jerome Laxale also condemned the walkout, which he said is a breach of a Code of Meeting practice. “This is disgusting, you just do not walk out on a meeting because if you leave a meeting to leave it without a quorum it is against the code. “It hurts me, because I take my job seriously and I take the health concerns of the community seriously, but this (walkout) has happened before and it is the same crew doing it again.” The most senior Liberal on the council team is Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM and he defended the walkout. “We didn’t leave the meeting without a quorum, the Labor councillor Dr Kim left the meeting without a quorum when he walked out after we did, so we thought there would be a quorum,” he said. The Catholic Archdiocese of Parramatta has taken the unprecedented step of releasing the faithful from their obligation to attend Sunday Mass as has drastically restricted attendance at weddings, baptisms and funerals. A growing number of Parramatta workplaces have told staff to stay home to help curb the spread of the virus as at risk workers with cardio and respiratory illnesses and the elderly are complying with health authority advice to self isolate. Even popular destinations like Parramatta Park have suffered a significant drop in numbers and there has been are marked decrease in traffic. The City of Parramatta Council has cancelled a number of programs, activities and services and has moved council meetings from fortnightly to monthly to minimise any risk to Councillors, staff and the community. Like other Sydney councils, Parramatta is awaiting health authority advice about teleconferencing council meetings but emergency measures have been taken to ask ratepayers not to attend the meetings, where staff numbers are also being limited. “The safety of City of Parramatta’s community is our top priority and Council is increasing measures at its public facilities to help curb the spread of the virus,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said. “We are following advice from the State and Federal Governments, monitoring the situation closely, and adjusting our events and services as required. “This is a very challenging time for all of us, but working together as a community will make a difference.” The Council has postponed Advisory Committee Meetings and Local Planning Panel meetings will be held via teleconference. The Catholic Archdiocese of Parramatta has dispensed parishioners from their Sunday Mass obligation. “We are in unprecedented times and we have a duty and responsibility to continue the pastoral care of our people as best we can,” a statement from the Parramatta Archdiocese said. “Pope Francis has stated that clergy be available to pastorally minister to people in this time of crisis. “Those who are gravely ill should not in any circumstances be denied access to the sacraments. “Let us pray that all of us would be strengthened for the task ahead and relying on the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and all the Saints we might persevere in carrying the Cross.” In churches with less than 100 parishioners, some Masses may be celebrated but in churches where Mass attracts more than 100, all Masses must be conducted outdoors and are to be celebrated without music and with a short homily. “Couples intending on marrying should speak to their priest in the first instance and that only the bridal party and immediate family can attend the ceremony,” the statement said. “In the case of funerals it is suggested only bereaved family members should attend the funeral and baptism of infants should proceed but only with the parents and Godparents present with the deacon or priest.” All public church gatherings in Sydney Anglican churches have been stopped, by order of Archbishop Glenn Davies. “I have decided that the Anglican Church in Sydney should suspend all public church gatherings until further notice,” the Archbishop said in a public statement. “I urge all Christians to continue to trust in God’s goodness and mercy in this crisis and to show Christ’s love to those affected.” In Russia, Orthodox Churches have adopted nightly processions of religious icons to help stop the virus and while local Orthodox churches will remain open at the stage, the practice of kissing icons is discouraged. City of Parramatta Libraries currently remain open but all Easter activities have been cancelled alongside the popular Storytime and the HSC tutorials. There are also stringent restrictions on the use of computers. Early Learning Centres remain open at this time but could also be closed. Aquatic Centres remain open but Learn to Swim programs have been suspended and these centres are subject to increased cleaning, sanitation, and chemical testing. Patrons and staff advised not to attend if showing symptoms of cold or flu All indoor fitness, exercise and Mums and Bubs activities have been cancelled alongside activities for seniors that include the Multi-National Seniors Group, the Day Lighters Group, the Let’s Dine Out group lunches and the Carers Support Group Meals on Wheels services remain in operation, but faceto-face support practices are being adjusted to enable appropriate social distancing. The Reconciliation Business Forum has been cancelled and Youth Week activities are currently under review. All performances at Riverside Theatres have been cancelled and ticket holders are eligible for refunds and will be contacted directly. Council’s Customer Contact Centre is currently operating but ratepayers are encouraged to contact the Centre on 1300 617 058. Visitors to the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Centre are encouraged to contact the Centre on 02 8839 3311 to confirm it is open and education tours have been cancelled. Council is communicating with all staff on a regular basis, providing relevant health advice, and implementing a range of measures to help ensure services to the community continue
Hunters Hill doctor warns of virus onslaught and what you can do to minimise the risks

Dr Charbel Badr is a GP, Medical Director of Hunters Hill Medical Practice and holds a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine
The Medical Director of Hunters Hill Medical Practice – Dr Charbel Badr – has warned of the risks faced by elderly people and those with a chronic health condition as a result of the spread of the virus. He writes exclusively for The Weekly Times on what you can do to minimise the risks.. “Unless you have been hiding under a pallet of toilet paper recently you would be aware that the coronavirus epidemic has taken a turn for the worst. “Case numbers are not growing by fives and tens from day to day but rather in the hundreds. “We have missed the boat to shut this outbreak down before it takes hold. “This is no longer being compared to recent flu seasons but rather to the Spanish Flu of 100 years ago. “The physical, mental
and economic effect of this outbreak will be long lasting and affect all of us for years to come.” Dr Badr stressed that the virus is new and people have no immunity to it. “ While the effects can be quite mild or not noticeable for some, they can be quite severe for others. “The elderly, the immune-compromised and those with serious chronic conditions are most at risk.” He writes that there have also been changes to the way we seek medical help. “We need to work together to reduce the spread, the so called - flattening of the curve - to al-
low the health system to cope with the onslaught.” “Governments have instituted multiple social, economic and healthcare policies to help cope with the situation. “One of major relevant in my field has been the focus on telehealth. “This refers to the use of phone calls or video calls to assess patient presentations for those at risk such as the elderly or those who could be potential carriers of COVID-19 such as recent returned travellers. “The uptake has been quite fast by patients and medical practices alike. “We now book phone and video consults like
normal appointments and while the human element is not perfect, the response has been positive from doctors and patients alike. “The technology is not there yet to replace the human experience but the benefits are two fold. “First, it gives the sick or vulnerable patient access to medical advice from their own home with their trusted doctor at a reduced fee or no fee for patients who meet the government criteria. “Second, it gives comfort to patients who have to attend the doctor with their lacerations and for their vaccinations that potentially infectious patients are
How to build and maintain a healthy immune system
at home and not spreading the virus.” Dr Badr further stressed the importance of self isolation. ”We need to all work together to get on top of this and in this case we have a chance to beat a deadly adversary by staying home! “A few other ideas are wash your hands, be careful of your coughs, be helpful to your neighbours, look after your workplace or your employees, eat sensibly, exercise, get your flu vaccine and get checked if you have symptoms but call your doctor first to make sure you are not unnecessarily putting yourself and others at risk.”

The Ryde Civic Hall, where at least nine people were infected by the virus. navirus Health Information Line can be reached on 1800 020 080. The City of Ryde stressed that at no stage did NSW Health contact the City of Ryde to directly inform Council about the confirmed COVID-19 cases prior to yesterday’s warning. The City of Ryde Council confirmed that no other events were held at the Ryde Civic Hall on March 8.
The Council did confirm that NSW Health advised it there is an extremely low risk of infection for any subsequent event held at the Ryde Civic Hall after March 8. The Sydney Church of Christ service was held prior to the Federal Government restricting the number of people at non-essential indoor events to 100 or fewer. The Council is contacting all the hirers
From page 8 “And we did not break the Code of Meeting practice because there was no motion, just a letter from Councillor Zhou to the Prime Minister which, by the way, he had already sent.” The Weekly Times asked Clr Yedelian why his team didn’t stay to hear the letter read. “This was one meeting to deal with one item,” he said. “The emergency meeting was only to deal with delegated authority and that concluded when the vote was taken. “And If there is an emergency motion than courtesy demands councillors are informed. “The first we heard about this letter was what we read during the meeting.” Councillor Yedelian said he has concerns that the Zhou letter purports to represent the views of the Chinese and Korean speaking communities. “The letter actually says it is on behalf of the Chinese and Korean communities,” he said. “As councillors we represent one community, the City of Ryde community, it is insulting and divisive
who used the venue after March 8 to inform them about the situation and the Civic Hall has been closed until further notice. “The Ryde Civic Hall undergoes regular cleaning after each hire of the venue including disinfecting doors and handrails and will undergo a further deep clean, which will include stringent infection control procedures,” a council spokesperson said.
to claim you are on the council to represent one cultural community.” The Deputy Mayor stressed that he had received hundreds of letters and emails from Chinese speaking residents concerned that the Prime Minister has not taken the stringent virus protection measures that have been seen in China. He said the Korean speaking community concerns were brought to his attention by Korean Chamber of Commerce spokesman Jimmy Park. Councillor Yedelian said it would be more appropriate to raise these concerns with health authorities. “We are councillors, not medical experts,” he said. The Weekly Times has found that as well as quarantine and social isolation concerns, the Chinese and Korean speaking communities have concerns about the number of beds in the Intensive Care Units of Ryde, Concord and Royal North Shore Hospitals. Other concerns include the potential for the virus to survive on the surface of imported food and other items as well a shortage of face masks, hand sanitisers and toilet paper.

RYDE’s famous Carlile Swimming has been forced to close the club’s pools due to the virus. The closure announcement coincides with the forced closure of the Ryde Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Monday.
Carlile Swimming has been at the forefront of Australia’s Olympic and Commonwealth medal pursuits for 65 years and an emotive message from the club recognises the heartbreak the closure has caused. “We understand that this may be upsetting to some of you as your children’s water safety and swim training is interrupted,” the club said. “We know that many of our kids love to attend their weekly swimming lessons and look forward to their time in the pool. “We also realise this will cause a disruption to weekly routines that you and your children have become accustomed to.” The closure was taken on government advice. “As swim teachers and parents, the safety and wellbeing of our swimming family is at the forefront of everything we do.” “With this in mind, we have taken into consideration the information and guidelines from the Federal and State Governments, the Department of Health and the Federal and State Education Departments. “This has led us to the difficult decision to close our pools and suspend our swim programs until further notice.” Family and individual accounts at Carlile Swimming will be placed on hold, with no further payments withdrawn. Any remaining lessons paid for in March will be credited. “We thank you for your continued support of Carlile Swimming.” “We have been teaching kids to swim well for 65 years and we intend to keep doing so for many years to come. “Until then, stay safe and healthy.”
Ryde’s Carlile Swimming was founded 65 years by the late Forbes Carlile and his wife Ursula. While the club recognises that the forced closure is upsetting news, it intends to reopen after the virus epidemic. TWT onthe-spot PHOTO

Read it and wipe! For nearly a century, The Weekly Times has made it its mission to service the interests of its readers, and we want to do nothing less during the coronavirus threat. We use a highly absorbent form of newsprint that we also believe 'loves your bum' far more than Quilton! And of course, with our rich history of reporting on things that matter in the community, those who have kept copies of TWT can pick the most appropriate subject with which to complement the wiping of one's bottom. For example, we have plenty of reporting on the cowboy lifestyle of Ryde's worst every elected official, ''The Colonel' or you might choose our coverage on the misguided politicians that drove the failed council mergers, or the incompetent and reckless handling of nuclear contamination in Hunters Hill. But we would
probably recommend above all, the latest efforts to keep the community in the dark and spend excessive amounts of ratepayer funds on the latest illconsidered redevelopment plan for Ryde's civic precinct without genuinely seeking the views of locals in processes that have employed the typical hallmarks of transparency minimisation. Probably most shocking has been the way a coalition of officials pullled off a premeditated act of false and misleading conduct, involving sophisticated manipulation of meeting and committee process to deceive councillors into a unanimous vote to unnecessarily evacuate Ryde's Civic Centre and relocation to expensive, non-council owned premises, so far cost ratepayers more than $10m. Stay tuned, we'll have more from our Special Team of Investigative Reporters (STIR)!

No fans is no excuse for a lacklustre local derby
No fans, Few thrills. Sydney FC players line up for the local derby.
THE EERIE ATMOSPHERE at Bankwest Stadium cannot excuse a poor performance by Sydney FC in the weekend local derby, Sky Blues players said yesterday. The derby against Western Sydney Wanderers ended in a one all draw in front of an empty stadium and star playmaker Luke Brattan conceded the lack of fans is no excuse for missed opportunities. “Not good enough,” he said. “No intensity, there wasn’t anything hap-
pening and we weren’t good enough.” “We can’t use the empty stadium as an excuse, it’s on us. “Players like me need to get the ball and make things happen. “I think we need to do what we do, have the ball, keep the ball and tire teams out and penetrate them when we get the chance.”
A slow start to the game saw end-to-end action from both sides before Sky Blues ace Adam Le Fondre shot low and was denied by Wanderers keeper Daniel Lopar. Le Fondre then popped up to nab goal 17 of the campaign to put the Sky Blues ahead in the 35th minute.
Harry Van Der Saag almost made an instant impact off the bench before a deflection from the Wanderers Kwame Yeboah wrongfoots Redmayne to gives the Wanderers their equaliser with eight minutes remaining. Another point earned by the Sky Blues sees them push eight points clear at the top, edging closer to the Hyundai A-League Premiership.
Two yellow cards was issued in a lacklustre game when the Sky Blues Paulo Retre was booked by referee Shaun Evans in the 30th minute and the Wanderers Jordan O’Doherty was booked in the 66th minute. The A-League has been the last domino to fall in the cancellation of professional sports competitions across Australia. Football Federation Australia (FFA) boss
James Johnson described the decision to immediately postpone the rest of the season with six rounds to as very difficult and tough. “Football comes to you today with a united voice .. but the truth is, we don’t know how this virus is going to move.” Mr Johnson said. “This is a unanimous decision of the FFA board, but it is also the unanimous decision of the A-League clubs,” he said.
“We want to ensure that the players’ mind frames are that the league will resume as soon as possible. “The decision to postpone is in line with other leagues around the world. “To get so close to completing the season is certainly a disappointment and to miss out by a few short weeks is heartbreaking for the players, the clubs and also the fans.”

Kim Clayton from the Ryde Sports Foundation told The Weekly Times the major awards night in May at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club has been postponed and the monthly sports at North Ryde Golf Club presentation night on Friday April 3 has also been postponed. “We are not cancelling totally, these events have just been postponed,” Ms Clayton said. “We will still be be honouring the award winners and presenting the $1,000 prize money.” The last two award winners for the year will be announced in The Weekly Times alongside a report on their achievements. The Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club is currently closed until further notice. “Our teams have stopped training, the competitions have ceased and junior rugby league has been suspended until further notice. “It is just a case of wait and see at this stage.”

Harry Grant joins Tigers 22 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 25 March, 2020
Hello Harry – Farewell Paul But playing debut delayed by NRL comp suspension By the one eyed Tiger
Promising young hooker Harry Grant has joined the Tigers this week in an historic swap deal with Tigers centre Paul Momirovski who will join the Mexicans south of the border for a year.
New Tigers hooker Harry Grant, right, will swap jerseys with Tigers Paul Momirovski who will have an exchange stint for a season south of the border with the Mexicans. Thanks Paul and welcome Harry.
They are scheduled to return to their respective contracted clubs next year. Tigers supercoach Michael “Madge” Maguire welcomed the move saying Harry is a welcome addition to the Tigers squad to fill in for the injured hook-
er heir apparent Jacob Liddle following the retirement of Robbie Farah.
However the devastating announcement on Monday by the NRL that the 2020 comp will be suspended as a result of the deadly coronavirus scare will delay seeing Harry in his new Tigers jersey. However we look forward to seeing Harry in his Tigers jersey at Leichhardt Oval HQ in the not too distant future. See ya there.
IMPORTANT CLUB NOTICE To our loyal Ryde-Eastwood family, don’t worry - we will be back! Due to Government legislation regarding COVID-19, it is unfortunate that Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club is closed until further notice. We apologise to members, guests and staff at this difficult time. Rest assured we are working hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all when the club eventually reopens. Thank you.
