WIN! with TWT!
Coral Austral Choir Tesoro
TWO TWT readers can win double passes to a Coral Austral Choir performance on Saturday November 2 in the Grand Hall of Mosman Art Gallery at 1 Art Gallery Way Mosman at 6pm. Sydney’s specialist Spanish and Latin American a cappella choir, Coro Austral - under the direction of Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin - unearths ‘hidden treasure’ for music lovers when it performs Tesoro. Audiences will be treated to rare choral gems that have rich stories and exquisite poetry attached to them plus some instrumental pearls… adding up to a treasure trove of Spanish gold! Program features Romancero Gitano by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (for choir and guitar), the Australian premiere of Indianas by Carlos Guastavino (for choir and piano) and Fantasia by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (for guitar and piano). Guest soloists are guitarist Ermanno Brignolo and pianist Mauro Colombis. Argentinian Guastavino – who has been described as the “Schubert of the Pampas” – was a prolific 20th century composer of melodious and lyrical songs accompanied by guitar or piano. Castelnuovo-Tedesco ultimately made his name as a major Hollywood film score composer. Inspired by the great romantic poets of all eras and nations his ‘Gypsy Romances’ for choir and guitar are set to verses by the iconic Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Ermanno Brignolo is an acclaimed guitar virtuoso performer, recording artist and teacher – known especially for his authentic interpretations of classic 20th and 21st century pieces. Mauro Colombis is a versatile Italian pianist from the town of Pordenone where he lived before moving to Australia in 2005. With Masters degrees in piano performance from the Moscow and Venice conservatoriums and a Bachelor in Drama, Arts and Music Studies (University of Bologna), he has given celebrated solo and chamber music concerts across Europe and Australia. Under the experienced and versatile McLaughlin, Coro Austral is an auditioned chamber choir which primarily performs 13th to 21st century music from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. Hi girls and boys, Welcome back to school after your holidays. This week we take the Ryde Hunters Hill & Canada Bay Life Education Van to Ryde East School, Twin Road Ryde East. With our new programs and technology we can inform and show students the affects of drugs on the human body. We create the human body in a three dimensional form so that the students can visualize the operations of the lungs, liver, kidneys, heart, blood stream and nervous systems. We also study the effects of foods, drinks, alcohol, smoking, and any other substances. Our technology engages the students and answers all the unknown questions of the digestive system of our human body.
See you in class.

Letters to the Editor Scomo & Donald new best friends Dear Sir, I am writing in response to Brian Binskin’s letter “Catastrophic weather predictions disputed” published in the TWT 16/10/2019. Unfortunately Brian, you’ve missed or misunderstood the point of my letter. I was responding to an earlier letter submitted by a hard right conservative lobby group lauding the Morrison government for its policies and actions to combat climate change. It’s a matter of public record that this is not the case and my letter was a series of statements of fact supporting this. At no time did I express a personal opinion one way or the other concerning climate change.
The caption of my letter, “Morrison, king of spin and BS” was my message. The matter of climate was incidental. Scott Morrison misleads, denies, obfuscates and distracts and if that does not work simply lies, which he does routinely and often, much like his new best friend Donald Trump. It is little wonder they have formed a mutual admiration society. Accepting or excusing such behaviour because “that’s politics” doesn’t cut it. For good or ill, leaders of a nation carry a heavy responsibility to represent their fellow citizens with dignity, ethical integrity, and high intelligence. They need to be - and to be seen and believed to be- authentic persons who are in politics not for themselves, not for narrow partisan purposes,

not for the perks of high office, but they are in politics to work for the well-being of all their fellow citizens. They must be able to speak with moral authority, not in slogans, advertising jingles, or tweets. Mr Morrison, I give you this quote from one of your predecessors: “The punters know that the horse named Morality rarely gets past the post, whereas the nag named Self-interest always runs a good race”. Dear Sir, Mark Newman is on the ball. Mr I’s r/rs (tired of writing “racist rants”) are unbecoming for TWT which is otherwise so supportive of members of our diverse community, the very target of Mr I’s r/rs. (8hm s/c) One should never evoke the 1930’s in an argument, so they say. However, gentle reader, if Mr I decides to write another diatribe, substitute the word “Jew” where he writes “Asian” or “Middle Eastern.” If you know anything at all about history, you will recognise where this kind of hate speech leads. Then you will see him for what he is. Words matter. BOB SELINGER Eastwood
Declare national drought disaster Dear Sir, Our local federal member of parliament Mr John Alexander has arrived at the political crossroads regarding support and judgement for expressing our views and concerns to the national government. There are many of his constituents such as myself, who grew up in the bush, or know friends and family combating this prolonged, devastating and heartbreaking drought. Yes, I know the old common response of “it’s not under my direct responsibility” will be the excuse! But it is the very fact that he is a member of our national government, that he can and should represent/exercise his influence on his ministerial/ political colleagues. I am acutely aware there are many local issues within Bennelong that he is required to address and resolve. However, if he was to hear what many of his electorate are saying regarding outside issues such as the drought, he would clearly discover the need to accommodate and react to these concerns. Whilst the state gov-
ernment has certain controls over the impact of drought, as a national representative Mr Alexander needs to reflect our views at a Prime Ministerial level that can only be directed from Canberra. Declare a National Disaster on the drought. This would engage the full resources of our Army which would provide transport, water and fodder from all over the country. These costs are totally unaffordable to the farmer. This drought is like no other, and the effects of it will have a direct impact on all of us. Even with significant rain now, it will take many years for the agricultural industry to recover. The recent photo of “dirt sifting through the hands” of our Prime Minister was an insult to his creditability. Mr Alexander needs to communicate and persuade the top end of the “greasy” pole of politics on all of these issues, not only as a Federal MP but as a concerned Australian. We should all remember that charity begins at home. PETER THOMAS Gladesville
Odd irony of TWT correspondent Dear Sir, Mark Newman’s brave stance against the publication of racism in The Weekly Times will surely meet much admiration. I agree that “a normal, well adjusted person would rightly dismiss [prejudice].” However I am a little confused by the odd irony of his pointed last paragraph: “Australia needs people of respect, inclusion and acceptance, not Greeks bearing hate.”
Hunters Hill Guest Column Classic Comedians are helping to combat Cancer
NEXT Tuesday evening October 29 the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill are holding an event at the Hunters Hill Club to raise money for the Gut Foundation in memory of the late Digby Richards of Bandstand fame who sadly passed away in 1983 at the age of 42 from stomach cancer.
We are blessed to have the finest comedians in Australia come to help with this worthwhile charity. Comedians of the calibre of Gold Mo Award winner Darren Carr along with the likes of talented funnymen Kenny Graham, Morgan Kent, Rex Allison, Greg Hayes and Bobby Bradford will perform on the night from 6.30pm. Tickets for dinner and show are $65 and payable: Commonwealth Bank BSB 062 171..... To The POINT
with MICHAEL PARSONS Gastroenterological Society of Australia in 1983 by Professor Terry Bolin, The Gut Foundation set themselves a mission - to improve the digestive health of all Australians. Through research, The Gut Foundation strives to better understand the causes of gastrointestinal conditions and disease and thus, establish more effective methods of prevention and treatment. Half our population complain of some digestive problem in any 12-month period. Whether you realise or not, we all know someone with heartburn, diarrhoea, an ulcer, irritable bowel, Crohn’s disease, colitis, or bowel cancer - but no one likes to talk about it. And the rates… they’re increasing. * * * DID YOU know that bowel cancer, for example, is the second most common cause of death from cancer, effecting one in 20? Did you know that most bowel cancers develop
from benign polyps, which, if detected and removed early, make this a preventable cancer? Did you know that just over 30 per cent of Australians take the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) test to pick up polyps - a test that every Australian is sent in the mail when they reach 50 years of age? A test which can quite literally save lives, Perhaps you did - but perhaps you didn’t. The Gut Foundation’s mission to inform, educate and increase awareness about the detection, treatment and cure of gastrointestinal disease continues - but not without your help! So I urge you all to come along and support your Rotary club and these wonderful entertainers and more importantly support this very worthwhile charity. Further enquiries 0410 500 735. Dark side of horseracing Dear Sir, ABC 7.30 Report Thursday evening reported on the slaughter of thoroughbred horses et al at the Theramist company in Queensland and others in Luddenham and Riverstone NSW. The ABC program exposed the dark side of horseracing with horses subjected to beatings, electric prodders, with some still alive during the slaughtering process. This includes young horses (under five years of age) and their broodmares. It is suggested, the industry has a high wastage level. Racing Australia claim one percent of racehorses are slaughtered every year - 7.30 say Theramist would meet that quota in a week. No matter what spin is applied, this whole process is absolutely sickening! Not much I can do, but a complete boycott of a day I enjoy, the Melbourne Cup might be a start! JOHN FRYER Ryde
My Kind of Country radio presenter Leonie makes it rain
RADIO 2RRR 88.5FM, Queen of Country Leonie McClure knows that thoughts about the ongoing drought make a lot of people feel powerless to help, but still they want to do something…anything. Leonie felt desperate times needed desperate measures. So, she decided she’d try a straightforward plea. Earlier this month Leonie took to the airwaves with her popular county music program, My Kind of Country, to ‘make it rain.’ Playing both international and local artists, Leonie dedicated her sevenhour broadcast from 3am to 10am to songs about rain. My Kind of Country, by its very nature, has listeners with a strong affinity with the
land and country, their thoughts with those most affected by the water crisis. Leonie’s efforts certainly resonated with her broad audience including other radio announcers who spread the word, as she presented and livestreamed her program. And the rains did come...and so did the calls and messages to the studio from all over Australia. ‘It’s raining in Parkes’ from a caller, ‘Pouring in Jervis Bay’ and a poem from another, Colin, and as anyone
who was in Sydney last Saturday week copped a downpour. “There was nothing like getting all those calls and posts, telling me it was raining in some parched areas,” said Leonie. “The community spirit was so passionate. Who knows, maybe the power of positive thinking works?’ Maybe a tour through drought-affected areas is on the cards for Leonie and her ‘make it rain’ playlist? h t t p s : / / 2 r r r. o r g . a u / guide/?my-kind-ofcountry

Expert doctor challenges the myths about dementia
A HUNTERS Hill doctor is challenging myths about dementia.
Doctor Charbel Badr is a Medical Director at the Hunters Hill Medical Practice and stressed that the most common myth is that dementia is a condition that is only suffered by elderly patients. “There are many middle aged people with dementia,” he said. “Dementia is not, necessarily, a normal part of ageing.” There is no definitive way to predict and prevent the onset of dementia nor any definitive link between race, diet or pathology to suggest it will be inevitable. “It is hard to diagnose and there will have to be tests that include memory tests. “These tests may show a delay in response times or the patient might show signs of fatigue or even start to forget where they parked their car or other signs of disorientation. “As well as these tests, brain scans we can detect if the brain
shrinks.’’ For the sufferer, dementia can be a terrifying experience that can manifest itself in many ways with some related to general health and wellbeing. “For example, there is a risk of malnutrition when the dementia patient forgets to eat or even weight gain when the patient has forgotten they have eaten and then eat to excess,” he said. Families living with a dementia sufferer often share the frightening aspects of the condition, such as the patient forgetting to turn off an electrical appliance or a stove. There is also a heightened fear of the sufferer behind the wheel of car because of a possible diminished response time to sudden risks as well as memory loss about road rules. Until now the most common family response has been to reduce the risk be reducing the suf-
ferer’s contact with risks. This has often seen the sufferer confined, doing less or even admitted to a dementia unit in a nursing home. There has also been a tendency to medicate the sufferer to control anxiety attacks or reduce the risk of the sufferer wandering. That scenario is changing with Dr Badr working in partnership with Group Homes Australia’s Founder and co CEO Tamar Krebs. “I am very interested in the changes in care and a new emphasis of creating a home environment in a group home which provides a high standard of care and where people have a sense of relevance.” It is also a myth that medication can cure dementia. “Medication may slow dementia down but it is not a cure,” Dr Badr said.
Doctor Charbel Badr is a Medical Director at the Hunters Hill Medical Practice and is pictured at the Practice last week where he discusses dementia care options with Group Homes Australia CEO Tamar Krebs. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO . “At present there is no cure. “But what I am excited about are the interesting breakthroughs in
technology , using mobile phones and apps to increase the sufferers independence while maintaining some safe-
ty,” he said. “If you have any concerns about a family member speak with your doctor.”.
A Hunters Hill home set to change the way people live with dementia
AN exciting new venture in Hunters Hill for people with dementia could become an national model for care. The Group Homes Australia home in Earl Street has ten residents in an environment that strives to replicate a home environment and provides a standard of independence and freedom unknown in most nursing homes. Founder and CEO Tamar Krebs has devoted years of research into dementia and the home incorporates her intiatives, she told The Weekly Times. “So far it has been an extraordinary journey,” she said. “I believe it will be an national model of living with purpose and meaning.” The initiative has a staff to patient ratio of one to three and staff are highly trained in creative and stimulating activities. Substantial effort is made to make the home as beautiful as possible and there is a resident profile process to ensure that the community is friendly and respectful. “What has been rewarding is to see our residents there really flourish. “Our group houses must be beautiful and at a standard where you can walk in and say I can live there.” The home is a world away from some aged care homes which reek of disinfectant and other features associated with a clinical environment. “We even strive to have the smells of a home and the sounds of a home and we find the families are delighted to have a family member here, instead of a environment where there is the risk of over medication.” Even the activities are individually profiled and one local resident brought his small dog to live with him as a companion. The group home in Hunters Hill has a dining room, living rooms, outdoor areas and private bedrooms.
“Homemakers are there 24 hours per day to deliver the care and run the home, with a registered nurse visiting on a regular basis. “We do not use agency staff because it can be quite confronting for our residents.” The home also works in partnership with the Hunt-
ers Hill Medical Practice. “Both organizations are working together to care and support local residents living with dementia.” One challenge is to educate local communities about dementia. “People in the community with dementia are
part of the community, we do not lock them up anymore and our people have the freedom to go out, go shopping, go to the movies and live a fulfilling life.” For more information please visit, www. grouphomes.com.au or www.hhmp.com.au.

SOME of the finest creative talent will be on display at the 29th annual Arcadian Artists Trail on the weekend of Saturday November 9 and Sunday November 10. If you have ever wondered how artists do their work, or what their studios look like, now is the opportunity to take a sneak peek. Once a year the Artists open their studios for people to visit and this year is no exception. There are eight rural properties to enjoy with 55 artists showing their talents. Some of the artists will be sharing their skills in demonstrations and explanation sessions so you may be lucky enough to see them in action. The Art Trail takes you through Dural, Galston, Arcadia and Berrilee
and entices the people of Sydney, Blue Mountains and the north and south coasts of NSW and beyond to experience the special talent exhibited by these Australian artists. All work is handmade by exhibitors and is of an exceptional standard. The artists pride ourselves on the quality of their work, whether it is printing, painting, textile art, jewellery making, sculpture or glass art, and more. Visitors often comment on the beauty and workmanship of pieces displayed. This year they are excited to introduce two
new private Studios on the Trail. They are Coomeallah in Berrilee and The Stable in Dural. Signs along the route will direct you to each of the venues and their excellent brochure has a map and information about each artist. A few of the venues have food trucks or coffee vans to supply those in need of refreshments while the local shops have a variety of cafes ready for you to enjoy. They even find people bringing a picnic rug and enjoying food and a glass of bubbly on the lawns of the studios.

Taffa’s Mitre 10 West Ryde store to close
WEST RYDE will soon be losing one of its oldest established businesses, starting way back in 1955, some 14 years before man landed on the moon, Taffa’s Hardware has a long and cherished 64 year history of being part of the local community. At its helm was its founder Ron Taffa who dedicated his working life to hardware and serving the community, it can’t go under
estimated the impact he made to the emerging suburb of West Ryde in its early years. Ron provided an
enormous amount of building materials to the growing suburb of West Ryde and the broader Ryde community watching it
grow into the great part of Sydney that it is today. The store has always been very community minded, sponsoring local football and cricket teams and donating merchandise to local schools and community groups to
help them raise money for various charities and organisations. Since 1980 the business has been part of the Mitre 10 group and became known as Taffa’s Mitre 10, two of Ron’s children entered the business in
the 1990’s and have held the management reins ever since. It’s been a wonderful 64 years, however time has now come full circle and as local community desires have changed it is time to say goodbye to a faithful servant of
the community. Taffa’s Mitre 10 will soon close its doors, but not before a ‘END OF AN ERA’ closing down sale which starts now at 1 Chatham Road, West Ryde. Phone 9809 0222.

Canada Bay Club’s $600k in community grants Organisation
Canada Bay Club has continued to power the efforts of more than 100 community organisations, with $572,000 in funding in 2018/19 under its ClubGrants scheme. Last week the Club celebrated the work undertaken by those organisations - listed on this page - at its annual ClubGRANTS event. Canada Bay Club president Frank Failla said he and fellow directors hoped “for this to be an ongoing and growing sum. “For us to continue to achieve this we would ask that you consider us as a venue of choice for you and your families, friends, colleagues, and organisations to spend time.” Work has also recently commenced on a makeover of the Club’s front façade and various other improvements aimed at better serving its 20,000 members, driven by Sydney’s changing demographics.
Mr Failla said the improvements included a new balcony area on the first floor and an ‘all weather’ children’s play centre separated by a clear screen from an adjoining new alfresco dining area so parents could relax and supervise their children. “We expect the project to be completed in early 2020,” he said. “The Inner West is not immune to changing demographics and we are certainly seeing this take place here at the Club. The key driver for the Front Façade work is the increase in families moving into the area.” Mr Failla thanked his fellow directors for their “time, guidance and gratuitous service” which would serve the Club well into
the future. And he stressed the club would be open for business throughout the construction period and the club’s friendly staff would, as usual, be on hand to assist patrons getting in and out of the club. *** Canada Bay’s younger community members will be excited to hear their favourite giraffe, Happy Healthy Harold, will be visiting again for Ryde Hunters Hill & Canada Bay Life Education’s fete at Russell Lea Public School on Saturday, November 2. It’s a great family day out - why not also take the opportunity to explore what Canada Bay Club has to offer afterwards for the ultimate family day out!

Denistone residents unite to fight to save their grand heritage neighbourhood DENISTONE residents have formed an action group to fight to protect the heritage character of their neighbourhood. Called the Denistone Conservation Action Group, it strongly supports the City of Ryde’s new and controversial heritage policy which aims to identify, protect and conserve heritage homes from demolition as well as stop inappropriate development. Action Group members Paul Margereson, Tom Tsihlis, Anne Johnson and Giri Ramachandran took time off work on Thursday to meet with The Weekly Times on Chatham Road, the heart of an historic precinct perceived to be at the frontline of the Ryde’s heritage conservation dispute. They told TWT the majority of local residents support the Group’s fight to preserve the heritage character of the neighbourhood where many homes were built a century ago and were first listed for conservation under a local government covenant 80 years ago. Heartbroken and devastated by the recent demolition of beautiful, local historic homes to make way for two storey “duplex” homes they say they have had “more than enough” and are ready to fight back. “We are all long term residents who have invested a lot of time and money into our heritage homes in our heritage streets and we do not want to see our beautiful, family friendly neighbourhood become another Rhodes or another Meadowbank,” Tom Tsihlis said. “Our life long investment should not be sacrificed. “For decades we have worked closely with our local council, fully complied with every aspect of coun-
cil planning and now we support what this council is doing to conserve and protect our community.” The Action Group is clear about who their opponents are. “I have lived here for 42 years and I have seen change coming and a real threat from property developers who do not want to live here but only want to destroy, develop, sell for profit and get out,” Paul Margereson said. “What they want to do and what they are doing is scandalous .. an absolute disgrace that shows their total disregard and respect for everyone in the community but themselves.” When pressed on the issue of profits, Action Group members conceded that the value of their own heritage homes – as heritage homes in a heritage street - is diminished when neighbouring heritage homes are demolished and replaced by out of character modern homes. “Of course this is the case, it is simple economics about rarity,” Giri Ramachandran said. “The rarity of home as a heritage home in a heritage neighbourhood means the value of such a home will always go up,” Despite the obvious value of a heritage home as an investment, group members argue that the inherent cost of conserving a heritage home should not deter owners who think demolition and rebuilding is a less expensive short term option with long term benefits. They told TWT there are many heritage specialist building supply firms and specialised tradesman who are less expense than some “knock em
down” property development cowboys. “I did a heritage friendly renovation and it did not cost me any more and it preserved the value of my home and the character of my home,” Giri Ramachandran stressed. “If you are sensible and willing to look into the market you can profit from a heritage home renovation at an affordable cost.” For Paul, Tom and Anne, the world of profit is a world away from what they are fighting for. “My beautiful home has been here for one hundred years and I want my children, grandchildren and their children to live in it for the next one hundred years,” Tom said. “I also want them to grow up in a beautiful neighbourhood that has a real sense of community and a commitment to conservation.” For Anne it is heartbreaking to watch a heritage home being demolished to make way for a modern duplex and to see magnificent heritage gardens lost, with birds and small animals forced from homes that they, too, have inhabited for generations. “Now more than ever we need people to conserve what we have,” she said. “And without this council’s new heritage policy we will have nothing to protect us,” she said. Paul concedes the dispute is an emotive one. “When you see a beautiful heritage cottage in your neighbourhood being pulled down for redevelopment it is like losing an old friend.”

Where there’s a Wilga... there’s a way! WILGA STREET in Concord West was recently awarded Best Conserved Heritage Precinct.
As the City of Ryde debates a controversial heritage policy, Clr Jordan Lane takes a stroll down Wilga Street to look at what Ryde can learn and what can be achieved when heritage delivers on its full potential. Q: What can the City of Ryde learn from Wilga Street ? A: Wilga Street residents obviously take great pride in their street, their homes and the neighbourhood. They created this beautiful heritage street through their own initiative, care and pride of place. Unlike Ryde, heritage protection wasn’t imposed upon them as a social experiment . Q: Should council tell people what they can and cannot do with their heritage homes ? A: Council‘s Local Environment Plan (LEP) is the supreme planning document that determines permissible zoning and

land use. Unlike this heritage review, the LEP is upfront with the community about an acceptable uses of land. Heritage needs be considered holistically as part of an overall vision for Ryde - not arbitrarily imposed by the Mayor. He should have the temerity to set heritage protections through the LEP. This is a far more strategic approach, and requires extensive consultation with residents that he cannot run away from. Q: Many ratepayers support the heritage policy because it preserves the character of the historic areas where they live and increases the value of their homes as heritage homes in a heritage street ? Do you accept their argument?
A: I’ve spoken to many residents who like me, support heritage. However most accept that if you work hard to own a home, you should be entitled to a say about the future of your home. We can still preserve heritage, but we need to be upfront with residents and recognise that not everyone can afford the additional costs. Council’s Local Heritage Assistance Fund is an admission that this policy will add costs to basic home maintenance. Worse, of the thousands of new homes earmarked for heritage, only 33 lucky owners will be able to claim the assistance in full. This is clearly unfair and needs to be reformed if we are to protect our most vulnerable ratepayers.
Q: It was Ryde’s lack of a heritage protection policy that led so many people in Hunters Hill fight to against a proposed merger with Ryde. A: More than heritage, I believe it is Ryde’s addiction to property developer money than has caused so many in our community to be fed up. Unlike our sensible neighbours, Ryde Council is constantly supporting new development. Council is so addicted, that the Mayor is now mortgaging Ryde to the property development industry in order to find new projects. Q: Mayor Jerome Laxale argues that the heritage policy protects neighbourhoods from overdevelopment, do you accept that ? A: I think it is hypocrisy that Mayor Laxale and his Labor-Green coalition promote themselves as fighting overdevelopment. They were quite happy to support a 63 storey development in Macquarie Park, known to many people as “Laxale Towers”, which was most strongly opposed by local Liberal MP Victor Dominello. He should focus on stopping high-rise development, not attacking hardworking mums and dads. *** Mayor Laxale voted not to recommend the development in Macquarie Park.

Getting ready for the 2019 Granny Smith Festival Grand Street Parade
A great day out at the Granny Smith Festival Thank you to everyone who attended the Granny Smith Festival and made it such a memorable event. The Granny Smith Festival continues to provide us all with a great way to celebrate Eastwood’s history as well as the City of Ryde’s continued evolution as one of Sydney’s major multicultural centres. I would like to say a special thank you to all the performers who entertained the large crowds throughout the day and night, as well as the volunteers and City of Ryde staff who put in countless hours to make the Granny Smith Festival such a success each and every year. NSW Government called on to declare a climate emergency The City of Ryde continues to lead the way on tackling climate change. We were one of the first in Australia to declare a climate emergency and at last week’s Local Government NSW annual conference a motion we put forward calling on the NSW Government to also declare a climate emergency was carried by member councils.

Denistone students start class in multi million dollar buildings
A TEN MILLION dollar upgrade of Denistone East Public School was inspected by Ryde MP Victor Dominello last Friday who said he is thrilled with what he saw. The upgrade delivers six new contemporary classrooms, amenities and an upgrade to the administration building. Mr Dominello said the State Government is proud to provide the school with the facilities students need and the local community deserves. “It has been fantastic to watch the progress of the Denistone East Public School upgrade and I am sure the school com-
munity is excited to use their new facilities.” “We are making the largest investment in public school infrastructure by any State Government in history. “This includes building new schools but also upgrading existing facilities to enhance the educational environment for students.” The Ryde MP also sat in on a class where new technology was used to teach students about
traditional Aboriginal food gathering and cooking. School Principal Michelle Collyer showed off the new school facilities which includes an circular room with an innovative acoustic system that is designed to make talks and speeches audible without the use of a sound system. Mr Dominello said the government will invest a further $6.7 billion over the next four years to de-
liver more than 190 new and upgraded schools. “ In addition, a record $1.3 billion is being spent on school maintenance over five years, along with a record $500 million for the sustainable Cooler Classrooms Program to provide air conditioning to schools,” he said. “This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of New South Wales.”
Follow us to the Diwali Festival on the Common
NORTH RYDE COMMON will come alive with the festive colours of India for what is expected to be one of Sydney’s largest festivals in November. The Diwali Festival will be held on the Common on Saturday November 16 from 12 noon until 7.45 pm when there will be a fireworks spectacular. It will feature cultural performances as well as Indian themed food and craft stalls. Ryde India Association President Kedarnath (Kevin) Pagaddinnmath told The Weekly Times the Diwali Festival on the Common seeks to recreate the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Hindu Diwali Festival in India. He said this centuries old celebration honours the victory of the God Rama and the forces of light over the forces of darkness. “The fireworks display, particularly, celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil,” he said. “It will also celebrate a new year for the Indian community and it is the one festival that is celebrated right across India. “It is also our aim to promote multiculturalism and we invite families from every cultural background to come and join us in celebration.” He said children are especially welcome and there will be rides and other children’s activities. City of Ryde Clr Bernard Purcell said it is a honour to host the Diwali Festival on
the Common. “Even though this is an Indian Community event it is for everyone and everyone
is welcome,” he said. “I am particularly happy to work with the Diwali team and with the City of
Ryde’s Indian community to promote this event, which should be spectacular.”

Should the trial be successful it will be enforced by the City of Ryde with fines for offenders. The trial will apply to the eastern side of Rowe Street and has the support of the local Korean speaking business community, which proposed the idea to Clr Dr Peter Kim. It is expected to see civic ashtrays sealed to deter smoking and will be supported by a public education campaign. Dr Kim has his surgery in Rowe Street where he treats a significant number of patients for smoking related conditions. “I see a lot of people with smoking related problems including emphysema and lung cancer,” he told The Weekly Times.
“With this in mind I doorknocked all the local restaurants and restaurant owners who agreed the trial would be in the best interest of the local community.” Locals Sue Yang and Isabella Lee actively support the trial ban. For Isabella it is all about the protection of children. “Not only have I seen children breathing in smoke I have seen young children burned by cigarettes and when I was little I was also burned by a cigarette,” she said. “There are a lot of children in Rowe Street and the trial ban will be good for their health.” Locals told The Weekly Times they support the trial ban and hope it will not have to be enforced by fines.
“Smokers are already being hit with a heavy tax on cigarettes in Australia and the ban should be a success for all the right health reasons, not as a revenue raising scheme by council rangers,” one smoker said. Dr Kim’s motion for the trial ban covers a zone from the corner of Rowe Street East and the East Parade to the Public car park. It also requires council staff to provide a report to identify other locations in Ryde that would benefit from a Smoke Free zone. A trial ban was recently introduced by former Hunters Hill Mayor Richard Quinn at the Gladesville Shopping Village, with limited success.

Bus service a poor alternative to Woolwich wharf closure projects 18 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 23 October, 2019
WOOLWICH residents are concerned about a proposed five month shutdown of their local ferry wharf and have called on the state government to open an alternative wharf and increase bus services. Residents were told that Woolwich Wharf is being upgraded to provide customers with an improved public transport experience. The wharf is expected to close from February 2020 and what concerns residents is that no alternative harbour service is being offered and the local bus service is an “inadequate” alternative. “This is despite the availability of an alternative wharf or floating pontoon at Woolwich dock, directly opposite the existing Woolwich Wharf,“ Collingwood Street resident Stephen Irwin told The Weekly Times. “The Woolwich dock wharf currently takes large private ferries for such events as transporting passengers to and from Cockatoo Island on New Year’s Eve, so access is not an issue and it is a viable alternative ferry wharf during the upgrade to Woolwich Wharf.” A problem with the Woolwich dock is that Hunters Hill Council charges a hefty parking fee at nearby Clarke’s Point but Mr Irwin argues that the state government and the council should act in residents’ interests because other parts of harbourside Sydney have had a better deal than they have. “When the Cockatoo Island and Balmain Wharves were replaced
government ferry services were not stopped as they were simply moved nearby,” he said. “This is what should happen at Woolwich.” The Woolwich Wharf upgrade is part of a harbourside wharf renewal program which has been hailed by residents across Sydney as a significant improvement on existing wharfs. “The wharf upgrade program has been designed to create a distinctive theme for Sydney Harbour,” a Roads and Mari-
time Services spokesperson said. “ The design aims to unify and identify the harbour wharves and the ferry commuter transport system. “It will provide more options to move around Sydney on public transport.” Bus services have replaced ferry services at most wharves being upgraded but Mr Irwin says the existing bus service in Woolwich is a poor alternative. “The 505 bus service to
the city is only available in peak hours during the week and is not available on the weekends and it is a very limited city service. “Outside of peak times you would be expected to catch two buses to travel to and from Woolwich to the city. “Elderly Woolwich residents and school children can not be expected to do this, especially later in the evening when the 538 bus service to Woolwich from Gladesville simply stops.I “If you want to have an
Woolwich Wharf evening out in the city, public transport is not available to get you home to Woolwich.” Residents want Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett to act.
“Put in place a plan to operate an alternative ferry wharf from Woolwich dock during the upgrade to Woolwich Wharf,” Mr Irwin said. “The ferry service to Woolwich is an essential
public service and cannot be stopped for five months. “If the 538 bus route has to be slightly altered to accommodate the alternative wharf at Woolwich dock, that can be done.”
Do more than hope for a cure - help find one TALENTED scientists in Australia and overseas are working hard to delay, prevent and ultimately cure dementia.
To a great extent, their future success relies on volunteers for clinical trials. There are several advantages for people with dementia or at risk of dementia, volunteering for a clinical trial. Research shows that people with dementia, participating in trials do better than those at a similar stage of the disease, but not involved in a trial. One personal benefit is access to the latest treatment before it’s widely available. Secondly, by volunteering participants take a more ac-
tive role in their healthcare, and may discover more about their own medical condition. “Another advantage is that participants receive a high standard of care. In effect, they get their own personal, professional research team who closely track their wellbeing,” says A/Prof Kathryn Goozee, CEO KaRa Institute of Neurological Diseases (KaRa MINDS). “The participant’s wellbeing is also boosted because they’re making a contribution to worldwide dementia research - to find the cause, treatment and cure. We want every trial to succeed, but if the cause or cure isn’t found, the trial may find treatments to improve the quality of life for people with
dementia. And there may be other positive outcomes from the trial that accelerate our medical progress.” Dementia is the second leading cause of death for all Australians and the leading cause of death for women. It’s likely you know some with dementia, especially as there about 447,115 people living with the disease, and nearly 1.5 million people involved in their care. KaRa MINDS is currently conducting free clinical trials for people with memory issues, and people with Parkinson’s disease and memory issues. They are looking for volunteers, so for more information contact KaRa MINDS on 8960 7788.

Parramatta News and Views
Parramatta opens one of the world’s great walking trails ONE of the world’s great walking trails was launched in Parramatta last week.
The new 65km Great West Walk walking trail links Parramatta to the Blue Mountains and was launched in Parramatta Park on Friday. The Great West Walk is a community-led initiative by the Walking Volunteers, who previously helped develop a number of other great Sydney walks. The Volunteers were praised by City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer, who said the City of Parramatta is proud to be a partner. “People are already familiar with the Sydney Harbour Walk, Great North Walk and Sydney’s Coastal Walks, and now the Great West Walk will open the door to the lesser known but equally beautiful bushland corridors, regional parks and waterways of Sydney’s west,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said. “The City of Parramatta is proud to have contributed to what is sure
to become an iconic walk. “It is a wonderful opportunity for people from near and far to come and explore Western Sydney, and provides a great excuse to get outside and be active.” As a part of the project, City of Parramatta Council has delivered a new 1.2km walking track that runs along Toongabbie Creek between Old Windsor Road and Tucks Road, Toongabbie. The $850,000 Toongabbie Crossing has been jointly funded by City of Parramatta Council and the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program. The route traverses through Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith Local Government Areas. To support the official opening of the Great West Walk, the Walking
Volunteers are completing the entire 65km over a period of five days. Setting off from Parramatta this morning, the group is scheduled to arrive at Penrith station at 4:45pm on Tuesday, October 15. A broad range of stakeholders have worked together to deliver the Great West Walk, including local councils, NSW Parks and Wildlife Services, and Western Sydney Parkland Trust.
Support has also been provided by the Office of the Government Architect; Department of Planning, Industry and Environment; Western Sydney Diabetes; Western Sydney Local Health District; Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC); and NSW Department of Sport. North Ryde Community Bank supporting Local Business ARE you looking for a local business to help you out?
As part of their community support model, the Bendigo North Ryde Community Bank has launched their Business Board where the local community can find a business or a service to help you with that odd job or professional service. “We have a range of local businesses in our community and our Business Board provides the community with an easy way to connect with these businesses” said Branch Manager Pat Italiano. “Our business
banking customers can leave their cards, flyers or brochures on the Business Board and anyone from the community can come in and take a look”. The Bendigo North Ryde Community Bank was set up in 2005 by members of the local community to provide banking services to the local community at a time when other banks were closing their branches. As a Community Bank, they have been supporting the local community for the past 14 years by
returning a portion of their profits to the community. “We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful business - in that order” Mr Italiano said. “This is just another way we can support our community and our customers”. If you are looking for a local business to help you with a job or a service, drop into the branch at Cox’s Road Mall North Ryde and have a look at the new Business Board.

Destination the spice of life
DEVELOPER Harry Triguboff is opening the door to new styles of living in the first stage of a masterplanned community intended to be a Macquarie Park residential market leader. The four-stage Destination is being developed on a former Goodman Group commercial site in Talavera Road and ultimately will be home to 1,300 people. Mr Triguboff, founder of the Meriton group, says stage one, Orana, would be more than ‘just an apartment building’. “More and more people are telling us that they’d like more than a conventional apartment, no matter how good the views, quality and fittings,” he said. “We’ve responded by using Orana as a model for future Meriton projects.” Mr Triguboff says Meriton will be including townhouse-like options, multi-level living, and rooftop terraces. “You could say we’re taking a new path but I don’t see it like that,“ he said. “You have to deliver what people want and that’s what Meriton’s always done – that’s why we’re Australia’s most successful apartment developer.” The 2.37-hectare Destina-
tion site adjoins the Macquarie shopping centre, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, and is on the doorstep of Macquarie University and the Macquarie Park train station. Initial stage Orana will consist of a single building with one section rising to 27 floors and the other six levels topped by resident-only gardens and a barbecue area. The 214-home stage will include an 80-place childcare centre and two retail tenancies. James Sialepis, the Meriton national sales director, said Orana’s ‘mix’ would include six townhouse-like apartments with rooftop terraces and direct courtyard access to the podium gardens. “There will also be a selection of multi-level townhouse-style homes, also with private rooftop terraces with turfed areas,” he said. “The idea of walking outside to something more private than a balcony strikes a chord with many people.”
Orana also would have five four-bedroom penthouses with private roof terraces. Mr Sialepis said Meriton also was ‘going the extra yard’ when it came to Orana’s traditional-style apartments. “The Destination site, an island that’s apart from other developments in the area, affords spectacular views that take in the CBD 13km away and the nearby Lane Cove National Park,” he said. “Our architect, DKO, has ensured that Orana residents enjoy those views, and can lap up the sun, by way or floorto-ceiling glass and generous balconies.” The Orana’s one, two and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses will have internal areas of between 54 and 105sqm, many will have studies or media areas, and some will have two parking bays in the ground-level undercover parking area. Orana’s lifestyle facilities will include a gymnasium, 20-metre indoor heated pool, spa and sauna.

GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN? New Players Welcome
AWARD-winning high-school speaker Daniel Merza visited Epping Boys High School recently to speak to the Year 10 cohort as part of the school’s “Boys To Men” program. Using the monkeys metaphor from his book Get the Monkeys off Your Back, Daniel challenged students to reflect and think critically about what prevents them from achieving their personal best and maintaining positive wellbeing. “If you’re constantly trying to please others to fit in, you will never be happy and engage in unhealthy behaviour. Becoming your own man calls for courage and developing character, which requires not to overly worry about how others see you” Daniel says. By drawing upon his own story, Daniel shed perspective on mental health and the importance of reaching out for help. “Staying connected and building positive relationships with family, friends and teachers is key. It’s about remaining strong. Get out of your own head. Talk openly and maintain perspective. No one succeeds on their own.” For more information www. danielmerza.com

Moses magic inspires Roos to World Cup Nines title
WIN! with TWT!
By CHRIS KARAS
EXCITEMENT machines Mitchell Moses and Ryan Papenhuyzen have showcased their extraordinary rugby league skills on the world stage. The former Balmain junior representative stars played key roles in Australia’s all conquering team that lifted the inaugural World Cup Nines championship trophy last weekend at BankWest Stadium. Parramatta playmaker Moses capped a memorable Nines campaign by scoring three tries and a personal tally of 20 points in the Kangaroos’ 2410 win over New Zealand in an entertaining Cup final. The skilful half demonstrated his attacking skills with a masterclass performance - notching two superb solo tries before backing up forward trump David Fifita to score late in the match and seal the championship as well as a personal hat-trick. Moses was later named Player of the Tournament and gained selection in the World Nines Team of the Tournament alongside Kangaroos’ team mates Fifita and flyer Josh Addo-Carr. Rookie Melbourne Storm fullback Papenhuyzen proved a revelation in the NRL this season with his blistering speed and tricky footwork and showed those natural traits during the Kangaroos

victories over the Kiwis, United States and Papua New Guinea in Pool matches, Samoa in a semi final and again over New Zealand in the championship decider. Both are former Tigers’ junior products that have experienced break out seasons with the Eels and Storm since departing the Wests Tigers. The pair were emerg-
ing cubs in the Balmain Junior Cup system and former recipients of the NSWRL U/16 Harold Matthews Cup and U/18 S.G Ball Cup Player of the Year Awards before bursting onto the NRL scene. Moses is a product of the Carlingford Cougars JRLFC while Papenhuyzen played his junior football with the Dundas Shamrocks
in the Balmain Junior League. Papenhuyzen gets another opportunity to show his wares in the green and gold when he lines up at fullback for the Junior Kangaroos against France Under 23s this Friday at WIN Stadium Wollongong in a curtain raiser to the Pacific Test match between Australia and New Zealand.

Head of Coaching Michael Haire said the club invites all former Tigers’ cricketers, officials and supporters to come along to the NSW Premier Cricket first grade Twenty20 double header with Sydney CC to square off with Gordon from 10am and Sutherland at 2.30pm. The Tigers Old Boys event will commence from 11am with barbecue and drinks available. MEANWHILE Sydney will host Eastern Suburbs in a re-scheduled third round NSW Premier Cricket first grade fixture at Drummoyne Oval this Friday October 25 and Saturday October 26. The ground was unavailable for grade cricket last Saturday due to the NSW v Tasmania Sheffield Shield match being staged there after it was switched from the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Blues went on to record a thumping eight wicket victory over their Tasmanian rivals with centuries from Test great Steve Smith (106) and Moises Henriques (124) and a ten wicket haul by Mitchell Starc.
Great Australian Sporting Stories by Ian Heads and Norman Tasker (Pan Macmillan $34.99)
Great Australian Sporting Stories Books
FIVE TWT readers can win copies of a new book Great Australian Sporting Stories written by highly respected sporting journalists Ian Heads and Norm Tasker. Written with wit, insight and a wealth of knowledge, Great Australian Sporting Stories is an enthralling expedition into the combative, collegiate, entertaining and always exciting world of Australian sport. Australia enjoys a rich sporting heritage. Our small population has yielded a disproportionate number of champions. These sports stars have become known worldwide as fierce combatants and honourable competitors, achieving soaring victories but also heartpounding near-wins and humbling defeats. Veteran Australian sports journalists Ian Heads and Norm Tasker have seen it all. In these 65 original stories, we hear of the explosive introduction of World Series Cricket in 1977, which turned a genteel endeavour into a high-octane contest and the clash of the titans as Packer and Murdoch squared off over the Super League. We see rugby union become a battleground for race and the Olympics an arena for sublime acts of courage and achievement. We get an insider’s perspective on
every kind of sporting endeavour - from boxing to tennis, cricket to AFL, athletics to rugby league - and not just the action on the field, but the change room gossip and clubhouse politics as well. IAN HEADS is a highly respected journalist, historian, author and storyteller who has covered the passing parade of Australian sport for 50 years. Since 1988 he has been the author or co-author of more than 40 books. In a succession of major titles Ian has told or helped tell the stories of some of Australia’s greatest sporting figures including Mark Taylor, Louise Sauvage, Ian Thorpe, Frank Hyde, Don Talbot, Mike Whitney, Noel Kelly, Arthur Beetson, Nova Peris, Des Renford, George Piggins, Ken Sutcliffe, Wayne Pearce, and renowned paramedic Paul Featherstone, aka ‘The Hero of Thredbo’. He has written a comprehensive history of Australian sport (since 1788), histories of the game of rugby league and of several sporting clubs, large and small. NORM TASKER is a 60-year veteran of the sports-writing craft. He
covered his first rugby Test for the Sunday Telegraph at 19 years of age, made many major tours as travelling correspondent with Australian cricket and rugby teams and became Sports Editor of the former Sydney afternoon paper The Sun. Tasker moved into the magazine field as a longterm editor of Rugby League Week, launched the cricket magazine Inside Edge and its rugby counterpart Inside Rugby and became publisher of Australian Consolidated Press’s sporting magazine division. He also wrote sports columns for The Bulletin over several years and was that magazine’s sports editor. He has written 13 books, including four with the legendary cricket commentator Alan McGilvray.
