In this fabulous, funny, down-to-earth book, Jessica writes honestly about her talent (or lack thereof) for cooking; about what’s really important when it comes to mothering and family and about her many and varied views, musings and common-sense advice on other craphousewife matters. Letters to the Editor Man’s contribution to global warming Dear Sir, A letter from Frank Brus in TWT this week (Questioning climate ‘science facts’ - headline courtesy of TWT) really does illustrate how silly the debate has become over the issue of global warming and man’s contribution to that warming. Mr Brus suggests that just because “many scientists believe something” doesn’t mean that “all of them could be proven wrong by a single new scientific theory or experiment”. You can see the problem already I hope. The point is that hundreds of world renown climate scientists have been gathering data and submitting papers for peer review for decades. And the conclusion that almost every single one of them has come to is the planet is warming at an alarming rate and that we humans are principally responsible for that scientific fact. So, we can listen to the world’s scientific community, who are telling us we have a real and immediate problem, or instead we can take advice from Donald Trump, Tony Abbott et al who have no qualifications, expertise or scientific backgrounds. I know who I’ll be listening to.
option that was ever put forward by Mr Dominello. The last I heard was you were going to build the car park on top of Glen Reserve(!). So, Mr Mayor, where is our car park? Mr Mayor, you gave us a huge rate increase a few years ago because you said we needed to fix our roads and footpaths and yet we still have ridiculously bad roads (does your Mayoral car ever drive along Constitution Road or Pidding Road or Quarry Road?). We still don’t have foothpaths on many of our streets. So Mr Mayor, where has all of the money gone that Council so desperately needed? Mr Mayor - start to focus on the people of Ryde. That’s your job. That’s what you were elected to do. If you fail to heed the call, your next failure at the ballot box is coming up. BERNIE EDWARDS North Ryde
Gore attacks our Coal exports
MARK NEWMAN Hunter’s Hill
Ryde car parking fines backflip Dear Sir, I think we have given the Labor Mayor Jerome Laxale enough time to get back into the swing of things after his monumental failure to win a seat in state parliament. It’s now time he started focusing on his job as Mayor rather than maintaining his faux campaign for a coveted green seat in the bear pit in Macquarie Street. So instead of having your hands do the keyboard warrior talking on Facebook get your hands off it and start doing your job. Mr Mayor, you promised to reduce parking fines last December. Now you have done a back flip and said you don’t support reducing parking fines. Was that just an election stunt to try and lure voters in? Mr Mayor, Victor Dominello handed over $25 million dollars 2 years ago for you to build a car park that is so desperately needed in Eastwood. This is after you politically sank every
Dear Sir, The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, a 75,000+ member national grassroots advocacy body representing the nation’s taxpayers, today condemned the sinking of $320,000 in taxpayers’ funds for a conference that brought Al Gore to Australia, as well as the misleading and ill-informed public statements made there. Instead of spending the money on better public services or repairing Queensland’s fiscal balance, the Palaszczuk government have spent it on flying in a man who lives in a 20-room sprawling mansion that consumes over 20 times the energy of the average Australian household to lecture us on making sacrifices to save the planet. Mr Gore has used his taxpayer-funded platform to make misleading claims. Contrary to his assertions that India is moving away from coal, India’s coal imports have increased by over 5.1 percent in this fiscal year compared to the last one. Given that coal provides for well over half of India’s energy needs with their coal-fired power set to expand well past 2030 even under India’s Paris Accord commitments, this spells a more promising future for Australian exports and jobs than what the man who said that Arctic sea ice would be gone by 2014 purports. Without Australian exports, nations like India would be forced to rely more on their own coal, which is geologically more emissions-intense than Australian coal, to satiate their growing economy’s needs. This coal is often mined un-

der dangerous conditions that put the health of civilians in the densely populated nation at risk. It’s also absurd that Mr Gore discusses a transition to clean power with barely a mention of natural gas or nuclear power, both of which Australia holds in immense untapped reserves. These are vital to firm up renewables as Australia’s own coal-fired power stations enter retirement. Gore has forgotten that his native United States drastically lowered its emissions by extracting enough of its own gas to beat coal-fired power on price. The 2019 federal election showed us that when it comes to climate and energy, Australians don’t want to be lectured to by pontificating ideologues masquerading as experts. Hardworking taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill to give them a stage for doing exactly that. We call on the Palaszczuk government to apologise for this monumental waste of taxpayers’ money, and to legislate tax cuts to compensate. SATYA MARAR Director of Policy Australian Taxpayers’ Al-

Lisa Miscamble Lisa Miscamble GENERAL MANAGER GENERAL MANAGER
The theme of this year’s Men’s Health Week is keeping boys and men healthy. We’re focusing on what males of any age can do to minimise their risk of developing heart problems later in life. We’re urging men to be good role models for their loved ones. We know that children tend to tag along for the ride when a parent makes an effort to live a healthier lifestyle. One of the National Heart Foundation’s flagship programs, Heart Foundation Walking, is getting involved in Men’s Health Week. We are encouraging existing walkers to “bring a bloke” along to a walk or download the Heart Foundation Walking app. Males who register between June 10 and 30 will go into the draw to win a prize. Over 30 per cent of men in Australia have high cholesterol and almost 75 per cent are overweight or obese. One-quarter of males have high to severe blood pressure levels. Walking is a great way for men to reduce these risk factors. KERRY DOYLE CEO, Heart Foundation NSW
Parking policies set in concrete Dear Sir, Taking voters for RYDE. This was printed Daily Tele I think 4/6/19, I also wonder if our beloved mayor has a brother running Parramatta Council, because between the two councils, they have made “canyons of concrete” yet pretending to be against overdevelopment. Yet Laxale beholds to The Greens on parking fines with a big backflip. Talk about Trust. Looks like your development and parking policies are set in concrete “literally”. PAUL DAWSON Ryde
National Blood Donor Week Dear Sir,
Roll up your sleeves regularly to support blood cancer patients in your community. It takes 18 people donating blood monthly to treat just one person living with blood cancer. That is why this National Blood Donor Week (9-15 June), the Leukaemia Foundation is challenging more Australians to step up and become a regular blood donor. More than 100,000 Australians are currently affected by blood cancer, including people in your local community, and many of these people require regular donated blood products to manage their cancer. What many people don’t realise is the sheer volume of blood needed to support blood cancer patients. More than a third of all blood donations (34%) collected by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service go towards supporting cancer patients and people living with blood diseases – and with good reason. One 470ml blood donation unit includes red cells, plasma and platelets. On average, one acute leukaemia patient will need nine units – or 2.25 litres – of red blood cells each month, or just over 1 litre (36 units) of platelets each month during treatment. This means for every blood cancer patient in your community, we need 18 Australians to roll up their sleeves every month – not just once, but for every month of that person’s treatment time, which can be anything from eight months on average through to a number of years. With 35 people every day diagnosed with a blood cancer in Australia and this number expected to increase to close to 50 people per day by 2025, we know more Australians will become critically reliant on blood products into the future. The need for blood products to support blood cancer patients doesn’t stop, so neither should blood donations, and that is why we are calling on more Australians to make blood donation part of a regular routine rather than a once-off exercise. Take the leap and become a donor legend today. BILL PETCH Leukaemia Foundation CEO
Hunters Hill Guest Column
Jazz music presenter David touched the lives of many listeners WEDNESDAYS aren’t the same at Radio 2RRR following the death of popular jazz music presenter David Spenser Stevens on Monday May 20 at the great age of 94.
David presented his midday Jazz program for in excess of ten years at 2RRR, playing a wide range of jazz music including big bands through to small groups plus vocalists. His favourite was the Duke Ellington band but of course his library comprised all kinds of jazz with interesting and informative comment interspersed between tracks which was easy for him as he had been an accomplished professional pianist for many years both in Australia and England where for a time he worked with a young Mick Jagger. The day before he died, he played piano in a band which performed in a jazz concert at Dural. * * * DAVID was born in England and played professional music there and moved to Australia in the 1970s.

Plan of Management for Boronia Park
A SHORT survey inviting park users, neighbours, stakeholders and the wider community to contribute to the preparation of the new Plan of Management for Boronia Park. The current (2015) Plan of Management is also being updated to enable Council and the community to determine the scope of two State Government grants provided by Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts that will benefit the Park’s facilities, enjoyment and management: • $1 million for the Boronia Park Sports Precinct Upgrade Project - to enhance the sporting opportunities and facilities on offer at the Park. • $200,000 for an all-abilities all-ages playspace. Your input in the planning process will help identify what you value about the Park; how you use or enjoy it; perceived management issues or challenges to address; and your desires for the Park’s future character, use and management. Please complete the feedback survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/HHCBoroniaParkPOM * * * YOUR suggestions or directions around the upgrading of sporting opportunities and facilities (to enable people of all ages, genders and abilities to enjoy organised sport) at Boronia Park, as well as the character and design of an all-abilities all-ages playspace, are particularly welcome. Please complete the survey by Friday June 21, 2019 or sooner. There will be several other opportunities for community involvement during the Plan’s preparation. For further information

It is the oldest tennis club in this area, dating from 1889. It has beautifully maintained lawn tennis courts and a delightful clubhouse for the use of members and guests. I enclose an extract from the Illustrated Sydney News 1889 List Of Clubs - Hunters Hill, Sydney Hon. Sec., W. Leigh read. “This club is mainly of a private character. Games are played on lawns of residents and for so small a club, it boasts of exceptionally good members, having no less than five intercolonial players on the list.” This is indeed a milestone for a local organisation.

Hunters Hill councillor urges residents to host a bee hive HUNTERS HILL councillor Elizabeth Krassoi has launched a new awareness campaign to encourage schools and residents to become beekeepers.
Councillor Krassoi told The Weekly Times pollinators are under threat, but locals can help on a local level to ensure the bees can keep doing a great job. “Our European honeybees are suffering under the threat of habitat decimation, chemicals and the destructive varroa mite which infests hives to lay eggs which destroy larva and adult bees alike,” she said.
Can bees become welcome residents in Hunters Hill? Councillor Elizabeth Krassoi believes they can.
“Native bees, however, seem very content in our growing urban environment and have proven as yet, unsusceptible to Verroa mite. “There are over 2000 species of native bee in Australia, 200 in the Sydney region. “By making friends with the bees, we create a mutually beneficial existence. “When we assist with their habitat and they, in return, continue to provide us with the fruits of their labour. “Because Hunters Hill has such an abundance of native and European flowering plants and veggie patches all year ‘round, you don’t ever have to worry about them finding enough flowers to visit. “ Councillor Krassoi “beelieves” that a rethink of what people plant can make a difference. “When we spray pesticides, where our water sources are, we provide a safer city for the bees to coexist in,” she said. “What better way to show our gratitude to these little guys for the important work they do?” The Hunters Hill councillor said her family reaped the benefits of several years of excellent local honey from our European bee hives “However, it is our native stingless bees that have travelled with us for the past eight years and who serve as a daily re-
minder of our role as caretakers of their wellbeing in the urban environment. “Native Stingless Bees are the sort of guest everyone is happy to have and I can’t recommend them enough as a happy addition to any garden. “They are fastidiously clean, so they don’t really need hive maintenance and they collect a floral resin which seems to have antibacterial properties so they don’t get sick. “They make and eat their own food, are tiny, stingless and quiet.” She said there is a huge community of native stingless bee hosts in Sydney in private homes and schools. “Council being involved is an easy win for everyone, including the bees! It provides us with a focal point to teach good habits, and it demonstrates leadership. “Once people see how very easy it is, it will hopefully also inspire more people to host a hive.”
Hunters Hill councillors accept a pay rise HUNTERS HILL councillors voted by five votes to two at to a recent council meeting to accept a pay rise for themselves.
The two per cent pay rise is in line with a recent incremental increase awarded to state public servants and was supported by Mayor Mark Bennett. Liberal councillors Deputy Mayor Ben
Collins and Zac Miles voted against it. “We are the smallest council (in Sydney) with the smallest population and every councillor who wants a pay rise should stand up and explain why,” Clr
Collins said. Mayor Bennett said the size of the council should not determine the size of the pay. “In a large council there are more councillors and if we were in a bigger council we
would still be doing the same amount of work,” he said. The Mayor stressed that councillors give up time from their own jobs and lose income as a result. Councillor Ross Wil-
liams said the pay rise recognises the principles of equity and effort. “Not everyone who serves on a council is wealthy and we might be small but that does not mean we do not
put effort into what we do and this (pay rise) goes nowhere near to recover our costs.” Councillor Miles said councillors should not accept a pay rise at a time when the council is working within a tight
budget. “We have to accept that we have a deteriorating cash position and not accepting this pay rise would prove to the community we are serious about saving money.”

Magical Riverside Girls production Wicked a hit
THE smash hit musical “Wicked” was performed at Riverside Girls High School last week. Executive Producer Graeme Lowe said the performances were a huge success and the audience at the school was enchanted with this magical production. ” Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of OZ and goes through the life of Elphaba who is a nice girl until the disapproval of society turns her Wicked,” he said. “A cautionary tale about love, friendship and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every
story,” He said the school performance director Renae Young went “above and beyond” with another mind-blowing musical this year. “OurThe Musical features over 140 girls either on stage as cast, playing in the 40 piece orchestra, backstage, sound and lighting or involved in making costumes for the performance. “The lead role of Galinda is played by Emily Simmons and Elphaba is played by Jordyn Rich-
ards. “Riverside has always been proud to present these large scale productions which provide the Creative and Performing Arts students a chance to shine with their talent which is showcased in so many diverse ways.” The music and Lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz based on the novel by Gregory Maguire. THE CITY of Parramatta Council has welcomed the launch of a grassroots philanthropic fund which provides local knowledge and money to help communities . Called the The Parramatta Community Fund, it provides grants to charities and organisations to improve the wellbeing of local residents and nurture a culture of giving in the Parramatta area. “Together we are building a Giving Circle – a dedicated network of local residents and businesses to support local initiatives, empower residents and build a vibrant, inclusive Parramatta,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said. “We encourage members of the City of Parramatta community to give where they live. “Every donation contributes to a new opportunity for a family or a person who is hoping for a better future.” Parramatta Community Fund Chair Anna Ashenden said there is great power in community philanthropy. “We are very excited that Parramatta has embraced the concept of a local foun-
dation, collaborating with partners who can get behind our vision of place-based philanthropy to address our community’s specific needs and help people who are suffering from disadvantage,” Ms Ashenden said. The Parramatta Community Fund was launched on Friday, May 24 at Lachlan’s Old Government House in Parramatta Park. The Fund is overseen by a volunteer team of local residents, business owners and councillors. In 2016, the City of Parramatta Council provided $100,000 in seed funding to support the not-for-profit organisation, which is a sub-fund of the Sydney Community Foundation. Anyone can make a donation to the Parramatta Community Fund. For more information or to show your support, visit www. parramattacommunityfund.org.

Wilde about the new heart of Ryde
THE New Heart of Ryde Civic Centre redevelopment proposal has won the enthusiastic support of former Mayor Edna Wilde OAM. Speaking exclusively with The Weekly Times, Edna Wilde said she recently saw the concept plan as well as the artist impression and is impressed. “I like the look and the shape and fact that it is not a box,” she said. “What really impresses me is the new design for the Civic Hall which is not only suited for our Ryde Eisteddford but for so many other concerts and performances. “There is even going to be an art gallery so this is going to be a true cultural identity.” Edna served as Mayor
during the eighties and supports the idea that the new civic centre is being part funded by developer contributions. “I did not like the previous plan which was for a residential development on the site with a small civic component but this new concept will be completely for the community, owned by the community and has four times the community space. “We should also get this done soon because we are paying around two million dollars a year to rent office space for council staff in North Ryde.”
She also has some memories of the existing centre. “The lift broke down, the air conditioning went off and we couldn’t open the windows because the windows would fall out. “And when it rained the water would fall down the wall. “The Civic Hall wasn’t much better, it is too small with no dressing rooms and why they put the disabled toilet in front of the stage is beyond comprehension.” Edna Wilde would like to see the new civic centre to have adequate parking - perhaps underground
- and a bus stop but is sceptical about putting environmental dreams before civic reality. “We not going to be holding this project up because of greenies,” she said. “I will not be putting up with that. “I did not think we would be getting this new civic centre in my lifetime. ” Her colleague Lyn Langtry hopes the new civic centre will feature a model of the existing civic centre. “As well as this historical model I would like to see a display of our history.”

Where is the Ryde Civic Centre site? The Ryde Civic Centre site is where the previous Council Chambers and Civic Hall are located, 1 Devlin Street, Ryde. Is the Ryde Civic Centre a heritage item? No, the NSW Heritage Commission has determined that the Civic Centre has insufficient merit for inclusion on the State Heritage Register. Why can’t Council just upgrade the current buildings? The cost of refurbishing and upgrading the Civic Centre and Civic Hall to today’s standards is estimated to exceed $60 million. Even after this expense, the existing buildings would still provide insufficient space and are not fit for purpose for our growing community.

Twenty two years fighting for the Hunters Hill Municipality
HUNTERS HILL legend Peter Astridge OAM holds a local government record for the longest continuous service as a councillor but his Queen’s Birthday honour is something special. After 22 years service on Hunters Hill council he looks back with pride on what he has achieved and how it all began in 1995 ... “I was first elected to the council as an anti aircraft noise campaigner who was sick of low flying aircraft over Hunters Hill, 24 hours a day, which was driving me crazy,” he said. “We won that fight and because I was retired from my advertising business I felt that I needed something to keep me active and as I loved serving as a councillor, I stayed on. “Of course, my love for our Hunters Hill has always been strong, especially for our bushland and our waterways and most importantly for our heritage, which defines Hunters Hill. “It is something special to get an OAM but it has been a real privilege to serve my community and I have enjoyed this immensely.” A former Commando with a fighting spirit and Hunters Hill Citizen Of The Year for 2019, Peter Astridge OAM has been at the forefront of the heritage municipality battles to preserve a local character and identity. “All the battles I have been in for Hunters Hill have been against State and Federal governments to protect and preserve what we value and we have won every one of the battles we fought,” he said. “The last one was the fight against the proposed forced
merger which I knew in the end we would win because there was such strong community resentment to it and support for us in The Weekly Times. “We we strong and united in what we were doing and we were unlike other councils, which were weak and political and walked away from the fight.” The politicised nature of councils is something this long serving councillor has always opposed but he stressed that being an independent councillor is more than being an independent thinker. “I never fought any battles for my own sake and I always fought for the community and especially for the little people who would never have had a voice,” he said. “I was always on their side and this is something I am proud of and it is why I never joined a political party, where you have to do what the party tells you to do and not want your community needs you to do.” He said that his greatest achievement was being the Chair of the Moocooboola Festival for more than 20 years and watching the event grow from being a small community festival to won of the largest annual events on the Sydney festival calendar. “It has grown to attract more than 40,000 people, which would have been beyond my wildest dreams when I first became the Chair,” he said.
“Despite the huge popularity of Moocooboola it still retains a community spirit as a Hunters Hill festival when it could have so easily been taken over to become a Sydney wide festival.” For many locals, this former commando is widely and fondly regarded for his work for ex-servicemen and women and with the Gladesville RSL Sub Branch where he has served as Vice President since 2012. “It has given me the opportunity and honour of meeting veterans and being invited into their homes,” he said. Campaigning with The Weekly Times, the former Clr Astridge helped save the restored World War One German howitzer cannon which stands next to the war memorial outside Hunters Hill Town Hall. “I did a lot of work to save the howitzer, mostly getting money from state and federal governments and to see it now, fully restored and protected, is amazing.” He also paid tribute to The Weekly Times and fondly recalls his guest columns and letters. “I have always enjoyed working with The Weekly Times and it is my number one local newspaper,” he said. “You always get a response from the community when you have a say in The Weekly Times and it is always a good response because people know that if you have the support of the TWT you are on their side.”

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS 2019
A grandfather’s love inspired recognition from The Queen A GRANDFATHER’s love and respect for his critically ill grandson is the true story behind a touching Queens Birthday honour. William “Bill” McGill OAM of Russell Lea lost his grandson Cameron Sykes at age ten to the life threatening Hunters Syndrome. Bill had been a stalwart fundraiser for Rotary - and a past President of Five Dock Rotary - and he was moved to raise money for doctors who care for children like Cameron through an initiative he called the Sports Lunch. “Cameron would have been 21 this this year and I still miss him,” Bill said. “But I’m a positive person and always will be and our first sports lunch, while Cameron was still with us, raised $15,000. “We later renamed the luncheon after Cameron and we went on to raise a quarter of a million dollars.” Cameron had difficulty moving and speaking but was an extraordinary child with a special sensitivity. “I remember we were watching the movie Lion King and before the Lion King died Cameron sensed that he would and he came over to the chair where I was sitting and buried his head next to mine,” Bill remembers. “Cameron didn’t speak much be he used to love walking into all the shops in Five Dock and everyone knew him. “I go to the cemetery in Ryde to visit his grave every year and I am always amazed to find that someone else has remembered him and has left something on his
grave in his memory.” One of Cameron’s special friends was the super model Elle McPherson who met him through her charitable work. “Elle always wears her trademark outback hat and once when the TV crews were there Cameron snatched it off her head .. there was an anxious pause .. but Elle responded with the most beautiful and genuine smile I’ve ever seen.” Now retired from his job as an accountant, staunch Balmain Tigers fan Bill McGill looks back on past sports lunches with nostalgia. “I’d always aimed high to get a great guest speaker like AFL legend Kevin Sheedy and the jockey Mal Johnson who spoke four times and Balmain legend Steve Roach who spoke three times.” He also built a friendship with local politicians through the lunches, including Drummoyne MPs John Murray and John Sidoti as well as Federal MP Craig Laundy and Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. “John Murray was there from the start and we became friends and when he used to drive along Lyons Road and see me he would stop the car, get out and say hello Bill, ” he said. “He was a wonderful local member and always gave me cash donations, but John Sidoti has been wonderful too and always makes the point of being the first person to buy a luncheon ticket
Bill McGill OAM of Russell Lea holds a photo of his late grandson Cameron. TWT on-the-spot-PHOTO. and he always bought a soccer item at the auction.” The first luncheons were held at the local rowing club before they became a permanent fixture at the Drummoyne Sailing Club. “I still go to the Sailing Club every week,
where I pick up my latest copy of The Weekly Times,” he said. He lives at home with his wife Dianne and they are looking forward to their upcoming visit to Government House. “Our family is not cut out to be honoured like this, I am a typi-
cal, local Balmain fan and have been since I was eight years old,” said Bill. “My 18 year old grandson Daniel Sykes captained this year’s Balmain S.G Ball Cup U/18 representative team and has come up through the junior ranks with
Leichhardt Wanderers,” he said. “Daniel is a promising forward who is now being blooded in the Tigers’ U/20 Jersey Flegg Cup squad.” “And I must admit I had a tear in my eye when I opened the letter telling me I about
my OAM.” Bill paid tribute to the ConnectTDFoundation and Rotary, which has recognised his work with a Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow award. “ I have always believed you just go out to do what you have to do.”

Railway enthusiast David Johnson from Ryde will release a book of his railway art. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
Ryde artist reveals the nostalgia of steam trains in his full colour book RAILWAYS have been the lifelong love of 77 year old Ryde enthusiast David Johnson, who will soon release a book of his railway art.
Balmain rugby league great Garry Jack
Titled “Riding The 33’s Express” the book will feature full colour art plates of his favourite trains and stations from 1952, the year when he took his first steam train ride at age ten. “I have been captivated by the look and smell of these amazing trains since that first steam train ride and my love of railways has never left me,” he said. “My favourite trains are the P-Class engines and of course they will feature in the book.” Mr Johnson has yet to announce a release date for the book and may
dedicate it to his father and to all those who love and care for railways. “I also lost my dad in 1952, so 1952 was an important year in my life,” he said. “And I still remember everything about that first steam engine ride in 1952 which included the advice we got as boys from the engine driver to hang on tight and do not let go!” This Ryde railway enthusiast is sad that Australia’s railway past has been “let go” and he hopes his book will generate nostalgia. “Unlike the English who have preserved their railway heritage, we have done the opposite here with the exception of a few very dedicated enthusiasts,” he said. “I have tried to capture the spirit of our railways in this book and I hope
people appreciate the detail in my paintings, which depict stations, uniforms and the spirit of the great age of the railway.” He said his favourite stations include the recently restored Country Trains terminus at Central Station and Artarmon Station. “I also like Bathurst Railway Station because of the association with Ben Chifley,” he said. “I love all the country trains but my book will especially pay tribute to those trains that operated between St Leonards and Newcastle.” His own association with the railways spans 30 years as a carpenter and he still retains a love for steam powered machines. “These days I am also a strong advocate for nuclear power,” he said.

JUNE 15 | WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY
Elder Abuse is definitely everyone’s business WORLD Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated each year on June 15 to highlight one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society, elder abuse. Elder abuse is the physical, verbal and mental abuse of aged people and individuals and can include forced deprivation and the denial of basic rights and human dignity. No one risk factor can explain or cause elder abuse. Despite this, the government notes that in the majority of instances where abuse is occurring, there is often a combination of risk factors that contribute to the abuse. It believes that being able to understand and identify risk factors can as-
sist in alerting people to a situation that has the potential for abuse. People found to be at risk include those who are socially and geographically isolated and lack connection from their neighbours, family and/or community and those who are dependent on others for their care. Those living in insecure or inadequate accommodation as well as those who lack capacity and ability to self advocate, or who may be confused about their property, bills, belongings and/or sur-
roundings are also at risk. Poor health and finances also contribute to the risk. The government has also profiled people at risk of committing elder abuse. The profile includes people who are stressed, burdened or feel resentful of the caring role, especially those who are dependent on the victim. People with a history of drug and alcohol abuse or have gambling and financial problems are also part of the profile. Migrant commu-
nities have experienced the incidence of elder abuse and the government profile identifies contributing cultural factors that include a lack of understanding of the Australian system as well as isolation from cultural activities or interaction. Although the extent of elder mistreatment is unknown, its social and moral significance is obvious. Individuals, communities, municipalities and organisations will come together across the globe to hold events on June 15 that raise awareness of elder
abuse. NSW Elder Abuse Helpline & Resource Unit encourages organisations to celebrate the positive contributions of older people in our communities. “Older people are essential in the fabric of our society. It’s time for us to acknowledge their importance and recognise they are entitled to the respect of their communities and especially their families,” a spokesperson said. Call the NSW Elder Abuse Helpline & Resource Unit on 1800 628 221 (free call). The Helpline is staffed Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5 pm.
Our community elders deserve safe, quality aged care, and respect 15 June 2019 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day It’s on us, please be vigilant and report bad behaviour
Victor Dominello welcomes extended club trading hours
RYDE MP Victor Dominello has welcomed new, extended winter trading hours that include extended trading hours for clubs. He said senior citizens and other regular club patrons will also welcome the extended hotel and club trading hours which will coincide with the ICC Cricket World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, the State of Origin series and NRL Grand Final.
The changes have been welcomed by clubs and will create jobs while Mr Dominello hopes readers of The Weekly Times will visit their local club to take advantage of the changes. “There is a pipeline of world-class events start-
ing soon, and the later trading will encourage friends and families to visit their local pub or club and catch all the action on the big screen,” Mr Dominello said. “Given many of these events are in Europe on a different time zone, it
makes sense to extend trading hours. “Whether you are barracking for the Blues in the State of Origin or cheering on the Matildas in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, these changes promote a vibrant nightlife.” Hotels and clubs in the
Sydney CBD and Kings Cross areas will be able to trade until 11pm, instead of 10pm “Standard 10pm Sunday trading has been extended to midnight across NSW for State of Origin Game Two in Perth on June 23 and the NRL Grand Final on October 6.” A range of statewide extensions have been approved for the ICC Cricket World Cup in the UK and the Women’s FIFA World Cup in France for venues showing live broadcasts. The extended trading hours do not apply to takeaway alcohol sales. Venues already approved to trade during or beyond the extended hours can operate as usual. Hotels and clubs must still comply with any individual trading restrictions or other special conditions that apply to their licences under the Liquor Act. The changes do not override the existing lockout laws.
I encourage everyone to support elders within our community, their rights, dignity, and independence.

25th anniversary milestone for Friends of Lane Cove National Park
FRIENDS of Lane Cove National Park recently celebrated their 25th anniversary of caring for the Park and Volunteers Week. Events included a smoking ceremony, barbecue lunch, animal display, music, discovery walks, plant and sustainability displays and the official opening of the restored Jenkins Kitchen by Hornsby MP Matt Kean, the NSW Minister for Energy and Environment. It was a successful day with over 120 volunteers attending as well as many of the people visiting the park that day. Restoration of the Jenkins Kitchen in Lane Cove National Park has been possible thanks to a $100,000 NSW Government Heritage
Near Me grant that was awarded to the Friends of Lane Cove National Park last year. The kitchen, a small sandstone building adjacent to the Park headquarters is all that remains of the property called Waterview, built by the first European settler in the area. The grant has financed the building’s restoration and repurposing as a cultural and natural heritage information hub, which will feature stories of the former homestead and farm in the context of the broader park’s cultural and natural values. The settler was William
Henry, an Irish ex-private of the Marines, who, on a verbal promise from Governor Bligh, in 1808 claimed 404-hectares. His claim was never recognised but he farmed part of the land Millwood, near the corner of Lady Game Drive and Millwood Avenue. His daughter Maria and her husband Thomas Jenkins later established an orchard on the property and lived in Waterview where most of their 13 children were born. They transported fruit, timber and other produce to the city on the steamship, Nellie. Maria died in 1919,
aged 89. Descendants of the Jenkins family came for the opening. PHOTO shows the newly restored Jenkins Kitchen with Greg Kirby (new NPWS area manager), Steve Chapple ( NPWS), Cathy Jenkins ( a descendant of Maria and Thomas Jenkins who built the homestead); Margaret Reidy - a founder of Friends of Lane Cove National Park and past president; Minister for Energy and Environment Matt Kean and current President Friends of Lane Cove National Park Tony Butteriss.

Accomplished Betty named REB Sales Agent of Year Metropolitan
BETTY Ockerlander of McGrath Epping is a top performer and highly accomplished agent within the real estate industry. The experienced Betty was recently nominated as ‘Sales Agent of the Year - Metropolitan’ in the Real Estate Business Top Women in Real Estate Awards for 2019. In its inaugural year, the REB Women in Real Estate Awards is designed to show REB’s support for the women in Australian real estate and recognise the industry’s top female profession-
als, who are leaders and role models of the industry, and join the campaign for a more genderbalanced world. Real Estate Business ranked Betty this year at number 19 in the REB Top 100 list with 101 properties sold and $134m in annual sales last year. With over two decades in the industry directing her own business in Epping, North Epping, Bee-
croft and Eastwood, Betty believes that honesty and transparency is what has helped make her successful and set her apart from her competitors. She believes it is important to create a stress-free experience for all her clients. Betty’s record sale price last year was a property at 12 Derby Street Epping, which sold at auction last year for
$2.545m. A strong community supporter, Betty has been president of Epping Rotary as well as the long-standing position as the secretary of the Epping Chamber of Commerce and is an active Real Estate Institute NSW Sales Chapter representative. She has also a strong connection with the local schools.
A Yu Hu development would impact on Eastwood Plaza warns councillors THE proposed Yu Hu multi-million dollar development in Eastwood Plaza has been blasted as an overdevelopment that offers little benefits for the community. The Ryde Liberals led by Clr Trenton Brown told last week’s council meeting the proposal is an overdevelopment that will change the look and feel of Eastwood Plaza and result in the destruction of the iconic Masonic Temple. “The escalation in development takes my breath away and why we are adding another 400 dwellings in Eastwood is beyond me,” he said. “This proposal will also see a decline in retail in favour of a massive residential expansion.” The proposal has provoked community concerns about the loss of the plaza’s famous hanging gardens and shaded areas as well as the Temple. “I have many concerns about the destruction of the Temple, especially as it is to make way for overdevelopment,” Clr Brown said. “Yet time and time again we rubber stamp overdevelopment.” Mayor Jerome Laxale refuted this claim. “This is not an approved Development Application, we do not have the powers to approve it, a state government agency has the powers to approve it.” The proposal includes affordable housing although who will get it remains a mystery. Greens leader Clr Christopher Gordon also questioned it. “There is only five one bedroom units and this is a very low figure of affordable housing,” he said. “We need to raise our affordable housing factor significantly.” The council nonetheless received and noted Yu Hu’s multi million dollar Voluntary Planning Agreement offer - estimated to be around $13 million - although no money has been paid to
date. “The problem with voluntary planning agreement is that they are voluntary,” Mayor Laxale said. Councillor Brown stressed that this proposed volunary planning agreement would also need to be scrutinised by the state government to avoid a conflict of interest claim. Liberal Clr Chris Moujalli also had concerns about the possible impact on the plaza. “The water fountain in the plaza is iconic and it is really important we keep this and that we try to wrestle back control back from the developers,” he said.

Korean singing festival will heal broken hearts
Eastwood based Labor councillor Dr Peter Kim is promoting the concept of a singing festival for Korean speaking senior citizens. “Karaoke is very popular with Korean senior citizens,” Dr Kim said. “The Federation of Korean Societies of Oceania would like to deliver a community project to gather isolated senior citizens in our community through a karoke singing competition.” Dr Kim’s concept has the support West Ryde Harmony Group spokesperson Youn Ryong Lee who told this month’s City of Ryde council meeting the concept should be supported by the council. “Singing is the language of the heart and Korean people love singing very much,” Youn Ryong Lee said. “So we elderly Korean migrants to comfort our hearts sing together but we need financial support for a singing festival in October.” Dr Kim’s subsequent motion seeks the support of council staff to help develop the festival based on the principles of inclusion, community wellbeing and cultural capacity building. He also invited the Federation to apply for a community grant and seeks a further $5,000 grant from the council. In other news, the City of Ryde will consult with shopowners, the Eastwood Chamber of Commerce, the Eastwood Korean Chamber of Commerce and local residents about moving two car spaces near First Avenue on East Parade. “There are two on-street car spaces in front of the White Lady’s Funeral in East Parade Eastwood,” Clr Dr Peter Kim said. “ There are two possible exit lanes in East Parade into the Rutledge street. :When the cars are parked in these two car spaces, it causes bottle neck of the East Parade and there is a long queue of cars waiting to exit onto Rutledge street.” He said the traffic flow study of this intersection of Rutledge street and East Parade confirmed the congestion.

cusation the motion is an attempt to gag him or the community. “I am not a gagger, so please do not call me a gagger,” Clr Purcell said. “This is all about getting procedure and protocol to work properly so we do not have to listen to waffle.” Liberal Clr Jordan Lane had earlier been lectured by Clr Purcell about interjecting during council meetings and this young Liberal councillor is furious that community based motions were described as waffle. “This is flicking the switch on the community, you are silencing local residents,” he told the Labor councillors. Councillor Lane also questioned if councillors had a legal right to limit the number of councillor motions and he argued that the community recently endorsed a Code of Meeting practice policy that did not include this limit. Legal counsel Paul Kepetas noted advice from the Office of Local Government and his opinion was that the limit would not be a significant change to the policy, such as a change to the number of councillors required for a quorum. He nonetheless said he could not guarantee that there would not be a legal challenge to it. The Greens Clr Chris Gordon voted to support the status quo of five motions allowed per councillor per meeting. For Liberal Clr Trenton Brown the whole debate was a farce. “We are becoming comic,” he said. “We have thrashed this out two or three times already and if all these motions go through without debate then they take no time at all. “This is a free speech issue.”

Magic sign top AEK Athens goal wizard
IT was a case of one step better for Putney Tennyson Bowling Club’s newly crowned Minor Singles champion Kerry Beattie. A jubilant Beattie, who finished runner up in the 2018 event, registered an impressive 31-11 vuctory over Peter Cormican in this year’s final. Cormican, who took up lawn bowls just two years ago, came through the qualifying rounds to reach the final - a tremendous achievement. They are pictured with Putney BC Vice President and marker Dave Walker.
GLADESVILLE Ryde Magic FC have pulled off a signing coup by securing the services of former AEK Athens striker Dimitris Sialmas (pictured) . The Greek sharp shooter promises to provide Magic with firepower up front and is set to make his debut for his new club within a fortnight. Meanwhile the Magic continued their rich vein of form with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Sydney University in Round 14 of the Federation NSW NPL3 competition. In a tight first half, Magic took a 2-1 lead at the break after goals by Chris Tomaras and new signing Charbel Haddad. After the interval the Christie Park based Magic seized control of the game and dominated proceedings with further goals by Chris Gaitatzis (2) and Chris Triantis. The win keeps Magic in the top three in this year’s race for the championship. In other news, GHFA Spirit FC defeated Canterbury Berries 5-0.

TWT RSF SPORTS STAR No 1
Honours for promising baseball pitcher Matthew By CHRIS KARAS
OUTSTANDING Ryde Hawks baseball prospect Matthew Harris is the first $1,000 monthly winner of the 2019-20 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year award. The emerging 12 year old pitcher caught the eye of talent scouts when he toured Japan earlier this year with the Australian Under 14 Junior Roos baseball team. A versatile player with a strong work ethic, young Matthew will be recognised for his achievements at a special presentation this Friday night at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club at 6pm. It has been a meteoric rise for Harris, a Year 7 student at Holy Cross College Ryde, who has shown a maturity in the baseball ranks that far belies his years. Since pitching his first ball as an 8 year old with the Concord Comets Junior Baseball Club in 2015, talented Matthew has developed into a real find. He went straight into live ball pitching in his first season with the
Comets and quickly established himself as a representative player with Ryde Hawks showing his wares in the 2017 Little League Minors State tournament and the 2018 Little League Majors State series. Matthew shone for the all-conquering Comets that won the Little League Majors Under 12s competition undefeated last season - pitching superbly to steer his side to a 14-5 Grand Final victory over the Stealers. In a career highlight, Matt also struck the final home run of the campaign with a sensational hit over right field before lining up for the Hawks at this year’s Little League Majors State championship at North Sydney. The hard working Harris experienced his biggest thrill in baseball back in March when he gained selection in the Australian Under 14 Junior Roosteam that trav-
elled to Japan for a two week educational tour. Matthew came back a stronger player after honing his skills against older Japanese opponents where he demonstrated his versatility as a pitcher, first baseman and outfielder. He puts in long hours to improve his overall performance and has benefited tremendously while under the tutelage of former Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins pitcher Brad Thomas and Korean international Mun Hyeon Oh. To further his baseball career Matthew has attended several training courses with the Sydney Blue Sox organisation and Next Gen. Outside of his club and rep training Matthew receives private one on one coaching withThomas and Oh and trains seven days a week to try and fulfil his dream of becoming a Major Baseball League pitcher.

OAM award for Hawks’ pioneer Jack King RYDE EASTWOOD Football Club pioneer Jack King of Gladesville has received an OAM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for outstanding service to rugby league.
The Hawks’ long serving Leagues and Football Club director (pictured) was recognised for his distinguished service to the sport at junior and senior level over an incredible 69 year period.
Evergreen Jack – who turns 91 on June 29 – was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his nearly 70 years involvement as an official, coach and administrator at grassroots level in the Balmain Junior League. He is the Junior League’s oldest active life member and still attends club and junior representative fixtures and functions to encourage the district’s emerging talent. Jack is small in stature but one of the biggest names to come out of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues and Football Club movement. One of the most accomplished officials in NSW Rugby League, he was elected on to the Hawks’ Board of Directors in 1964 and for the past 55 years has proved a tyro in his various roles as a Football Club and Leagues Club director and loyal ambassador for the code. “The game has always been in my blood and has given me plenty of fond memories and life long friendships,” reflected Jack who admits to never having tasted a drop of alco-

Today he is proud to be a Life Member of six organisations – Balmain Junior League and Balmain District Rugby League Football Club, Leichhardt Wanderers JRLFC plus the Ryde Eastwood Leagues and Football Clubs. It is a tremendous achievement by the father of two, who grew up in Glebe, and served as the Hawks’ Football Club president for 18 years. His late wife Norma served on the Ladies Committee for six years and would go on to become one of the First Ladies of the Hawks. They first met in the same kindergarten class at Glebe Public School in 1934 and went on to enjoy 60 years of marriage. Jack was involved with Balmain’s champion 1959 Presidents Cup-winning team and joined the Hawks in 1964 as a director. He is a past winner of the Tom Bellew Medal for services to NSW Rugby League (1999) and coached Holy Cross Ryde teams for nine years as well as the
Gladesville Bowling & Sports and North Ryde Hawks. Jack also received a Commonwealth Seniors Recognition Award for services to sport in the Bennelong electorate (2000); an Australian Sports Medal for outstanding service to rugby league (2000) plus the Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian society and government in 2001 – the 100th anniversary of Federation. Jack was awarded life membership of the Balmain Junior League and Leichhardt Wanderers in 1959; Ryde Eastwood Football Club in 1971; Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club in 1973; NSWRL in 2004 and Balmain District Football Club in 2018.
