Selina an early Quest entrant
SELINA LIN, 18, of Putney is one of our early contestants in this year’s TWT Granny Smith Festival Queen Quest.
Selina lists her Hobbies as Netball (playing, umpiring, coaching), Reading, Music, and occasionally baking! Interests are Literature, French, Netball, Music and International relations. Why I would like to be Granny Smith Festival Queen: The story behind the Granny Smith Festival is a humorous and quirky one: back in 1868, Maria Ann Smith “accidentally” grew the first batch of green apples and from then on, left her mark on the world with a new kind of apple - the Granny Smith! So, why does the green apple still matter today? What does the Festival mean to us? Today, the Granny Smith Festival is more than just the celebration of a new type of apple. It’s about the celebration of diversity in our growing local communities. The Festival is an occasion to uncover and respect the differences between the people of all ages, races, ethnicities, cultures, and beliefs brought together by the Festival. It’s a time for everyone in the community to be united in diversity. Born and raised in the area, I’ve always loved the festivity and the sense of inclusion that the Festival entails. As a keen netball player, umpire, and coach, I strive to apply the same values of equality and inclusion with my fellow teammates and with the girls I coach. Just like netball, the Festival is a team effort - the whole community bonds and coordinates an exciting event to make sure there’s something for everyone! The Festival is also important because it’s a way of allowing local organisations and the wider community to showcase their talents. I’ve enjoyed growing up with music, whether it be singing in school choirs, playing clarinet with the Sydney Youth Orchestras, accompanying friends on the piano, or, at my peak, squeaking away at the recorder in primary school! Graduating as the valedictorian of the Conservatorium of Music High School, I can see how music has enriched my life by teaching me patience, discipline, and creativity. My lifelong experiences with music have allowed me to appreciate how the Festival’s showcase of music, dance, designs, and parades engage local schools and the community to be involved in an opportunity for creativity. Being a tertiary student of international relations and law, I’m interested in the ways nations interact, and how we can shape the future by learning from these interactions. By learning French, I have realised that these interactions on an international level are also reflected in the multicultural interactions within our local community. I believe that the interactions between people of all cultures at the annual Festival can teach us how to appreciate our cultural differences. It’s a chance for the community to grow together by learning more about each other. It may be the case that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but I believe that a Granny Smith certainly doesn’t - a Granny Smith brings the whole community together! I would love the chance to be your Granny Smith Festival Queen of 2019, to be a role-model and representative of an inclusive community that celebrates and respects the nuances of diversity. Best wishes for the organisation of the Festival!

Letters to the Editor Little benefit from Parramatta trams Dear Sir, There is currently continuing discussion about various light tram proposals around Parramatta, with some of the familiar commentators aligning themselves with particular routes. These light tram proposals will ultimately be shown to have very limited benefits in regard to reducing the overall congestion of the city, as is already evident with the light tram service from Central to Darling Harbour which along part of its route is little better than walking. In the meantime, the provision of the logical and much needed rail line from Parramatta to Epping, as one of the missing links that would give connectivity across the city, with benefits for 70 to 100 years, is being quietly neglected as a face saving political imperative by the State and Federal Governments. It certainly wouldn’t look good for the Liberal State and Federal Governments to complete a logical and highly beneficial rail service which happened to be instigated by a Labor Government. The North West Rail Link should have terminated at a transport hub at Epping as originally proposed, with priority then being given to completing the link from Parramatta to Epping to create an
“Inner Circle Railway Link” from the City – Chatswood – Epping – Parramatta -Strathfield and then back to the City. That proposal would also have given people arriving at Epping on the NW rail line three alternate routes to the City, and finally easy access to Parramatta. It could still be achieved, with a medium rail branch line extending from Parramatta to Epping off a future western Metro line. BRUCE McMULLEN Architect/Strategic Planner Eastwood
The heart of the country Dear Sir, Recently I visited my old home town of Mungindi in the North West of New South Wales. It has a population of 747, and is 738 kilometers from Sydney on the border with Queensland. The main purpose of my journey was to attend the local and annual agriculture show. Mungindi, like so many other towns has been stricken with this current long lasting and devastating drought. Not only did the local community create and present a wonderful and strongly participated event, but also extended a spirit of generosity that was truly uplifting. Their determination to exhibit their town and district was re-

flected in their capacity to defy and resist the easy option of not presenting a show at all. Regularly since 1898 this small town represented by a beautiful “salt of the earth community” have consistently been confronted and challenged by such adversity. Options for New Heart of Ryde Dear Sir, John Fryer (TWT 4/9/19) seems to think it is a scare campaign to talk about the funding of the Heart of Ryde but on its website Ryde Council tells us that it is one of the frequently asked questions. This plunge into debt isn’t part of a scare campaign, it is what Ryde Council is proposing will happen. Budget blow-outs, a possible recession and political factors that may reduce contributions by developers are all very realistic and could leave the project’s financial viability and Council exposed. Not all my concerns have been published and the editor probably has legal/financial concerns about content (particularly as the names of two prominent Ryde residents involved in this now appear in ICAC exhibits). This is a huge project for an inexperienced Council (in this type of project). While I am sympathetic to much of the Ryde proposal (but not all) and some of it is long overdue, I do note that more cautious and less extravagant options are available. Sadly in Ryde we have seen in the past grand visions by political leaders turn out to be very costly mirages. FRANK RAYNER Boronia Park

Hunters Hill Guest Column Come and try your hand at the classic game of Croquet
THE NAME of the ancient sport of croquet derives originally from the Old North French dialect for “hockey stick” or “shepherd’s crook.”
The modern game is reputed to have started in Ireland in the 1830s and taken to England during the 1850’s. It became an instant success, one reason being it provided the first opportunity for women to participate in an outdoor sport on an equal basis with men. In 1900 croquet featured as a demonstration sport in the Olympics in Paris and players from France won all the medals. During the 1940s World War 2 damaged croquet’s popularity and the sport had a very low profile until the 1960s. An injection of some younger players in 1962 added momentum and there has been a gradual resurgence. Now croquet is again as popular as it was at the end of the last century.
To The POINT
with CHRISTINE COCQUI * * * CROQUET consists of a few basic strokes, but, like the moves in chess, once these have been mastered, a complex tactical game develops. Each game played on grass, involves skill in hitting a ball with a mallet through a gate (called a hoop) and tactics to outwit the opposition. Croquet can be played competitively or socially. Individual clubs, as well as the state organisation, hold regular tournaments and carnivals to allow competitive players to pit their skills against players from other clubs. A handicapping system helps level the score between players of different skills. Croquet players tend to be intelligent, positive thinkers with a good sense of humour. It is a very enjoyable and sociable game to play. * * *
THERE ARE two variations of croquet played at Hunters Hill Croquet Club. One is called Golf Croquet. Its basic rules are simple and many people start with it. The other type is called Association Croquet, with more complex rules and more challenging techniques. The Hunters Hill Croquet Club has organised an Open Day on Saturday September 28 at the Club premises at Fig Tree Park, 1 Matthew Street, Hunters Hill from 10am to 2pm. There will be free tuition from friendly Club members followed by a sausage sizzle for only $5. For more information, interested persons may email: huntershillcroquet@ gmail.com or phone 0490 494 065. CHRISTINE COCQUIO is a stalwart of Hunters Hill Croquet Club

As always, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the army of dedicated Lifeline volunteers whose hard work, energy and commitment behind the scenes and on-site make these book fairs possible. Nothing is left of this multi-million dollar Hunters Hill home.
Fire destroys Fortuna Street Hunters Hill mansion
A GAS explosion may have caused a fire that gutted a mult-million dollar heritage home in Hunters Hill last Wednesday night. The Fortuna Street home near historic St Peter Chanel Catholic Church was reduced to rubble by the intense blaze and was not occupied at the time. Neighbours battled with hoses to stop the fire spreading shortly after the explosion was heard in the garage, where two vintage cars were destroyed. “I looked out and I saw our next door neighbour’s palm tree on fire and then
there was just this big boom,” neighbour Nicole Klein said. Neighbour Judie Johnson said she opened her front door and could smell burning. “To my horror I saw this massive thing happening and I thought it was the church at first.” An exclusion zone has been set up around the home and neighbours have now been evacuated due to
severe smoke. Fire fighters spent more than an hour bringing the blaze under control, using water from local swimming pools. They said the cause of the blaze may never be known as the damage is so bad. The owners have lived in the home for 40 years and are overseas. Relatives are believed to have been notified.

Serenity Smiles team advise: have regular dental check-ups
REGULAR dental check ups are an essential part of your dental hygiene routine. Your dentist will inspect your teeth, gums and soft tissue to ensure your teeth stay in optimal condition and reduce your risk of developing problems later on. What can you expect from regular dental check ups? Regular dental check ups enable you to take a proactive and preventative approach to your dental health. It means you do not only visit your dentist when you have the toothache or a problem, you go regularly so that this doesn’t happen. During a regular dental check up you can expect: A thorough examination of all your teeth; During the oral examination your dentist will check for signs of tooth decay and bone or gum disease; Professional teeth cleaning and polishing; Professional cleaning is essential to remove plaque and tartar build up. While daily brushing and flossing does a lot to keep plaque under control, only a dentist can remove the tartar that can lead to gum disease. Your dentist will also polish your teeth and

remove any surface stains that may have developed since your last visit. Management of Fillings: In the event that your dentist does find a cavity, he or she will fill them to prevent the development of tooth decay. He will also inspect any existing fillings you have had done in the past. Take x-rays: Dental xrays may be required to look for cavities in your teeth. If you need an extraction or have concerns about your wisdom teeth, an x-ray may also be taken. Perform a jaw inspection: Your dentist will inspect your jaw for problems with your bite. Some people grind their teeth in their sleep and when they become tense. Over time this can lead to your teeth wearing away, and misalignment of your bite. Draft a treatment plan: In the event that your dentist does pick up an issue he or she will create a treatment plan and costing for you. Dental education and advice: Your dentist will be happy to answer any questions you may
have about brushing and flossing. He or she may also chat with you about your lifestyle and any changes you could consider to improve your overall dental health. How often should you go for a regular dental check up? You should see your dentist for a check up at least twice a year. If your dentist thinks you may be at higher risk of developing tooth decay he or she may request to see you more often. It is essential that you follow through your dentist’s advice and any treatment plans that are suggested. If you have any questions or concerns, bring them up during your appointment. If you need to find a friendly dentist in northern Sydney for regular dental check ups - the team would love to help you. At Serenity Smiles Dental, the dentists put their patients first. They appreciate the importance of an affordable high quality dental care and ensure patients receive only the finest dentistry in a relaxed and friendly environment. Parramatta News and Views
Fun run in Parramatta Park WESTERN Sydney’s largest charity race for children with special needs and new-born care will take place at Paramatta Park on Friday September 20. Known as the The Coleman Grieg Challenge, the race is an opportunity to raise the profile of businesses and promote health and fitness in the workplace as well as supporting the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children “The Coleman Grieg Challenge is an opportunity for Sydneysiders to get fit, have fun and give back to a cause that supports the lives of children and families in need,” Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children ambassador Jess Waters said. Jess Waters, was born with profound to severe hearing loss which went undiagnosed until she was two-and-a-half years old. Now, at 23-yearsold Jess loves to run and is on the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children team to raise funds for children with vision or hearing loss. She has a long association with the team as she attended pre-school and primary school at the Royal Institute before transitioning to a mainstream school at Tara Anglican School in North Parramatta. “As a recipient of the services of the Royal Institute I have seen first-hand the support provided to children and their families,” she said. “The support I received from RIDBC has been instrumental and helped me in my high school education to prepare me for university and the workforce.” Hearing loss affects one in six Australians. The Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children is a charity that relies heavily on fundraising and community support to provide a range of specialist treatments and make a difference in the lives of the people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
On September 20, corporates and individuals are encouraged to run, cycle or walk in Paramatta Park for the Coleman Greig Challenge. “The event is aiming to raise $250,000 for health and educational services to help children with special needs and new-born care. “The challenge provides the opportunity to raise the profile of businesses, promote health and fitness in the workplace and, most importantly, make a positive change to the lives of children with special needs.” Supporters are encouraged to give generously or register to support the event which raises funds for Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children. Afterwards, participants will be treated to a celebratory breakfast at Old Government House to share their achievements and help in reaching our fundraising goal of $250,000 for children with special needs and newborn care. “We believe that every child has the right to quality health and education services to allow them to reach their full potential,” Jess said. Registrations are open via the link https://cgchallenge. com.au/cms/runridewalk and close this Friday September, 13. To join the team Jess is on,visit the website www. cgchallenge.com. au/cms/joinateamand register with the code ‘RIDBC19. The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) is Australia’s largest non-government provider of education, therapy and cochlear implant services for children and adults with vision or hearing loss, their families, and the professionals who support them. cialist services available at RIDBC is unique in Australia and benefits thousands of children, adults, families and professionals each year. These services are delivered by a broad group of highly qualified professionals including teachers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, audiologists, orthoptists, psychologists, social workers, technology consultants, physiotherapists, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
surgeons and more. Using in-person sessions combined with modern technology. It connects children, adults and families across Australia to the expert education, therapy, cochlear implant, and vision or hearing support services they need. As a charity, it relies significantly on fundraising and community support to continue to make a difference in the lives of people with vision or hearing loss.

Gladesville school captain pleads for a safe crossing
THE SCHOOL captain of Gladesville Public School made a passionate plea for safety measures to Ryde City Council last Tuesday night. Alix Bandiera-Dunn’s plea was met with applause from both councillors and the public gallery who heard her call for a new pedestrian crossing at the main visitor entry to the school, behind the Gladesville shopping strip on Victoria Road. “Every day hundreds of people walk across the driveway and a crossing is all we ask for, to save a child’s life,” she said. “Every day over 300 kids walk to school and we have to guess if a car is coming. “How would you feel if your child came home and said I almost got run over today and just because there is not a crossing ? “We are always told – better safe than sorry – and it is your opportunity to make the choice to make us safe.” Councillors were supportive of this well spoken youngster’s appeal and Clr Trenton Brown assured The Weekly Times he will personally fight to have the crossing installed as a matter of urgency. Mum Loretta Bandiera said she is proud of her daughter’s commitment to the safety of other children and congratulated her for having the courage to have her say at the council meeting. In related news, resident’s from a street adjoining Northcross School in Ryde have called for urgent action to stop dangerous vehi-

Council meeting where she demanded immediate action. “I have seen cars mount the kerb, deliberately and I plead with you, if nothing is done
a child will be hit and I urge you, councillors, to take action.” The issue is expected to be taken up by the City of Ryde traffic committee.
The Weekly Times campaign wins a crucial child crossing THE WEEKLY TIMES and Meadowbank residents have won a pedestrian crossing in front of the new, local skateboard park.
This newspaper took up the fight for the pedestrian crossing in response to parent and resident concerns about children running across Constitution road and not being seen by cars. Our campaign was backed by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale who has championed child safety on dangerous roads around parks and schools. Last Tuesday night’s council meeting endorsed the crossing. “The Council took pedestrian and vehicle counts outside the skate park which found they exceeded levels stipulated by RMS guidelines, ” Mayor Laxale said. “A new raised pedestrian crossing will now be built on Constitution Road West, opposite the Meadowbank Skate Park.” The Meadowbank Skate Park opened in April and has been a big hit with teenage and child skateboarders. “The Meadowbank Skate Park has been a huge success and it is only right that steps are taken to ensure safe access for all the people that use this new facil-

Mayor Laxale also thanked residents who got behind the TWT campaign. “With the help of the community, we have achieved the right outcome which will help increase the safety of the many people who cross Constitution Road to access the skate park,” he said. “I would like to thank The
Weekly Times for helping raise awareness of this important issue.” Councillor Roy Maggio said the crossing will also benefit the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association, which has courts in Meadowbank. “There has been an increase in sports participation in Meadowbank so I welcome this crossing and
I am very thankful councillors saw common sense and supported it.” More information can be found in Item 9 (D) of the Works and Community Committee agenda at: https://www.ryde.nsw. gov.au/files/assets/public/ committees/wac/2019/ works-and-communitycommittee-meeting-13-august-2019-agenda.pdf

Awards founder and Precedent Productions Managing Director Steve Loe said the presentation evening is a chance for local businesses to come together to celebrate each other’s achievements and discover the winners of each category “But best of all it’s a fun night out,” he said. “Business people and their staff work hard, so this is a rare opportunity for them to take time out to enjoy each other as friends. “The meals are always fabulous thanks to our event venue and awards venue The Epping Club.
Spectacular Entertainment
“This year we have a spectacular event planned, with Paul Hancock back again as the master of ceremonies with entertainment including the amazing Alfie Arcuri and Erin Bruce who are sure to have the audience’s toes tapping when they take the stage.” “Of course, the highlight of the evening is the presentation of the award winners in each category. “What I love to see is the support that everyone in the room gives to the finalists and the huge cheer for the winners. “It’s also fabulous to see how everyone takes the trouble to dress in their best, which shows how important this event is to them. “It truly is a glittering occasion.” The presentation evening is at The Epping Club on Wednesday October 2. Tickets are strictly limited, and are available online at www.thebusinessawards.com.au, or call Precedent Productions on 8363 3333.
TWT Special Editions
“The Northern Districts Local Business Awards is made possible only through the generous support and encouragement of our major sponsors, City of Ryde and support sponsors, Lane Cove Council, Hunters Hill Council, The Epping Club, Service NSW and Riverside Business Chamber.” Mr Loe said. “Without them, we would not be able to celebrate the wonderful small businesses that make Northern Districts the prosperous commercial area that it is.” “And of course we are indebted to the area’s leading newspaper The Weekly Times in so successfully promoting and hosting the Awards” he added. The Weekly Times will be featuring the finalists in two special editions prior to the Gala Presentation Wednesday October 2. Finalists are invited to contact The Weekly Times this week for inclusion in the Special Finalists Editions with free and complimentary editorial support on 9807 6666.

Ravin’ about the Gladesville Ravens 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 11 September, 2019
By ANTHONY STAVRINOS
WOMEN’S football is thriving in TWT Territory - so it’s no surprise that after years of methodical planning involving continuous improvement both on and off the pitch, Gladesville Ravens’ senior women’s team are Champions in one of the state’s top tier competitions. Before getting their hands on the 2019 NPL 2 NSW Women’s Championship silverware, they would first need to overcome newlycrowned Premiers, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, one of Australia’s most successful heritage clubs who’d only lost a single game all season. But in the Ravens, APIA had met their match, or as it turned out, their Achilles’ heel. The Ravens, who finished the season a solid third on the ladder, had a psychological advantage ahead of the match - it was the side that inflicted upon APIA its sole defeat. In its NPL 2 NSW Women’s squad the Ravens have a mix of fresh, up and coming talent, complemented by a healthy smattering of experienced campaigners. Coaching staff ensured those key features of the squad were represented in appointing co-captains, Eleanor Lidbetter - who last year sat her HSC - and 20year Ravens veteran Ashleigh Smith, who has decided to hang up her boots. Whether she’ll be let off
the hook that easily is another story, with the club’s decision-makers determined to hang on to her footballing wisdom for at least another year. Also part of the Ravens’ NPL 2 NSW Women’s squad are two women that have recently graced TWT’s pages - Carlie Ikonomou - daughter of TWT letters page contributor Tony Ikonomou - contributed her wealth of experience as a former W-League star. Sixteen year old Alanna Fisher, 2018 Hunter Hill Sportsperson of the Year and a Grand Finalist in the TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award, also added her talents to the mix. The Ravens’ Director of Women’s Football, Janine Ligato, is one of a small group behind the scenes that has revolutionised the football offering for girls and women in Sydney’s north west. Among the most impressive of the Ravens’ achievements is its partnership with Coerver Coaching, a world renowned methodology for skills improvement, in an arrangement that is limited to
the Ravens’ female ranks. The Ravens’ Girl’s Skills Acquisition Program known as ‘The Nest’ - lays the foundations for early and accelerated player technical development, an innovation likely to attract new players from outside the local area. Local boys hoping to access the Coerver method should not fret - Gladesville-Ryde Magic has also entered into a partnership with the school and Coerver has already scheduled several holiday camps to be held at Macquarie University. “There’s been a huge commitment by the players who persevered with us while we made some really big changes on and off the field,” Ligato told TWT. “Their faith has been rewarded. Another gamechanger is the increased access to Christie Park and this has enabled our NPL 2 Women’s players to have two sessions a week compared to one.” She paid tribute to the club’s volunteers whose selflessness was a key factor in the Ravens’ ongoing success, not only at state

(Photo by DC Sports Photography) representative level but also with our many junior amateur teams. “In terms of what we’ve just achieved in taking out the NPL 2 NSW Women’s Championship, I can’t speak highly enough of the work being done behind the scenes by NPL Coordinator Shane Stevens, coach Alex Disciascio and our head coach, Albert Disciascio,” Ligato said.
Season Decider: How the Ravens did it It took just ten minutes of play before it the football gods again made it clear they were to again smile on the Ravens and it would not be APIA’s day
for retribution. APIA was badly exposed in defence during an Emily Diaz-spearheaded Ravens attack and its custodian opted to recklessly take out Diaz and not the ball, earning a straight red card and an early trip to the dressing sheds. APIA went into overdrive and created chances, but the Ravens’ numerical advantage and determination proved decisive. The Ravens’ killer blow came via a “super sub” effort by Jade Pondt who came on with 30 minutes of the match to go. Latching on to a loose ball in midfield, Pond evaded two challenges before unleashing a long-
range shot from 30 metres, which floated over APIA’s substitute keeper and into the back of the net. APIA came close as the clock ticked down in regulation time and for a further five minutes of nail-biting injury time, but the Ravens courageously held out to claim a deserved Championship. Ryde’s unofficial ‘Minister for Sport’ Roy Maggio made the trip to Glenwood’s Valentines Sports Complex to witness the Ravens’ milestone. “This is a big deal for women’s football,” Cr Maggio told TWT. “The Ravens is one of those great, grass-roots success stories and the
only way is up, especially with the foundations it has laid for improving girls’ technical skills through its Coerver partnership. “Congratulations to the Ravens’ NPL 2 Women’s players and coaching staff - your achievements are thoroughly deserved” Gladesville Ravens 2019 NPL2 Womens championship-winning team was: Eri Arikawa, Eloise Taylor, Ashleigh Smith, Alanna Fisher, Eleanor Lidbetter, Carlie Ikonomou, Emily Diaz, Emma Douglas-Oliveira, Zoe Zaczek, Annelise Schiraldi, Chloe Goldsmith, Kasia Wojtowicz, Annabelle Kinchington, Jade Pond, Hannah Gestier and Anja Seeto.

The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth AM (pictured right) joins City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale and heritage advocates at a recent Heritage Advisory Committee morning tea. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.
Ryde heritage plan goes on public display THE CITY of Ryde’s long awaited heritage policy is to go on public display today.
The new policy contains reforms to protect Ryde’s historic buildings and the Council will seek community consultation on the reforms. Mayor Jerome Laxale said these reforms are a direct response to community concerns about the past loss of heritage and a desire to preserve what the community values from the past.
An important part of the policy - listed as a Community Strategic Plan - is the significance of heritage to the character of Ryde’s long established suburbs. The proposed heritage controls are also designed to provide greater certainty to property owners and prospective buyers. Under the reforms, 44 new heritage items will
be created in the City of Ryde. These include protection for thirty properties that include Federation cottages, Inter-war bungalows and Victorian Georgian villas. Also incuded are seven public parks, a reservoir, three street tree boulevards, two shops, a licensed hotel and a school.
“:Six new heritage conservation areas will also be created, while the former Squire’s Brewery and Halverson’s Boat Yard in Putney and the Glades Bay Baths in Gladesville will also be listed as archaeological sites,” Mayor Laxale said. The reforms have further been created through are based on the findings of a comprehensive heritage
review recently commissioned by the City of Ryde. Heritage protection driven by all sides of politics on the Council is in stark contrast to the so-called “do it yourself” heritage policy supported by former Mayor Col Bill Pickering which made heritage listing a choice for property developers. Heritage items will now have local government
protection from inappropriate development and improvement work must now be sympathetic to the character and style of the heritage item and the heritage conservation area. As part of the consultation, the City of Ryde will be conducting six drop-in sessions as well as an information session on the reforms. Written submissions can
also be made via the website www.ryde.nsw.gov. au/haveyoursay/Home. Email submssions should be sent to: cityofryde@ryde.nsw.gov.au Submissions sent by letter should be posted to : General Manager, City of Ryde, Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 The community consultation will take place until October 25.
Korean cultural forum honoured at council meeting
CITY of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale presented a certificate to one of Ryde’s most respected Korean community groups last week. The Korean Cultural Forum received the Mayoral Certificate of Appreciation during last Tuesday night’s Council meeting in recognition of the Association’s ten year service to the Korean speaking community. Mayor Laxale welcomes the contribution Korean migrants have made to the vibrancy and cultural diversity of the City of Ryde. She always celebrated it on the 22nd but thought it may have actually been a week or so earlier, perhaps it’s the day of her funeral, which would seem just right. Betty never wanted ‘one of those sombre, depressing funeral affairs’ -- she wanted ‘a party’ with her ‘family and close friends to gather somewhere sunny, wear bright colours, drink champagne and say nice things’ about her.
And that’s what her family is planning. Fortunately, her two adoring granddaughters Sophie and Kate are event producers and Kate just recently received her Celebrant’s licence, so will officiate at her beloved Nan’s service to be held in the family garden with Betty’s friends and family wearing bright colours, drinking champagne and saying nice things about her. And there are plenty of nice things to be said. It could be a long party. Happy 91st birthday Betty Vallis and Vale Betty Vallis.

Betty was the second daughter in her family, after older sister Joyce (Jones), stepbrother Bill Gibbs AO (dec) and younger sister, Jann (McNeill) (dec). They were also from a large but close-knit extended local family called, ‘Booth’. Yes, she was one of JB’s many cousins in the Ryde area. Betty was well known in the area for her work at Malvina High School and for her contribution to the Gladesville Ravens Soccer and Cricket Clubs. She was an active member of her local Probus group, the Historical Society, Strathfield Musical Society and St Anne’s at Ryde.

Betty Vallis, late of Wamberal on the Central Coast, was a long-time resident of the Ryde area. She was born at home in Epping and lived in East Ryde for nearly 60 years until recently when she and her husband Allan moved to Wamberal to live with their son Rod and his wife Suzie.
Betty was much loved by all her knew her and she made many friends along the way. She was devoted to her family including her sons Rod and Mitch (dec), her grandchildren Ben, Sophie, Kate, Paul (dec) Damien and their partners who knew her simply as ‘Nan’. Their children – her nine great grandchildren – knew her as ‘Big Nan with the Brown Hair’, and her many nieces and nephews all called her, ‘AB’, short for Aunty Bett. Betty was well-travelled, well-read, well-informed and always had a story to tell.

LOCAL sporting heroes Tom Craig (pictured) and Tim Brand have helped Australia’s world number one ranked men’s hockey team book its place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after winning the 2019 Oceania Cup. The Ryde international sharp shooters produced their best as the Kookaburras secured a dominant 3-0 victory over New Zealand in Rockhampton last Sunday to emphatically take out the best-of-three series with two wins and a draw. Craig and Brand who are both former recipients of the TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award - notched goals in the Kookaburras 4-0 win over the Kiwis last Thursday and played strongly in the second match of the series that finished 2-all the previous night. Keen to make amends after blowing a two goal lead to the Black Sticks 24 hours earlier, the Kookaburras went about their work in typical energetic style. The first goal came in the 11th minute when striker Brand produced a poacher’s finish following fine lead up work from Aran Zalewski. Soon after it was 2-0 as the Black Sticks failed to deal with a penalty corner from Blake Govers. Defender Matthew Dawson received a yellow card in the third quarter but it was a minor hiccup for a Kookaburras outfit that had primed itself for this tourna-
ment and successfully accomplished the mission of qualifying. Daniel Beale forced a sharp save from Black Sticks goalkeeper George Enersen before Govers put the icing on the cake late, with a drag flick into the roof of the net to claim his second of the night. “We’re very happy with the result. New Zealand were really competitive over the three games but we took our game to another level so it’s very pleasing to finish with that result,” said Head Coach Colin Batch. “We pride ourselves on playing the last game really well it was a very even performance by the
team, very connected and we got the result.” Batch said it was great to be able to lock in a place at next year’s Olympics. “We played a lot of Pro League this year and we played really well in that but it’s not a qualification, so this was our first opportunity to do it and I think it was really important to qualify here rather than go through another qualifier.” “Now we can start planning in proper terms over the next 10 months.” “You never take the Oceania Cup or an Olympic qualifier for granted. I’m very pleased and now we can look forward to Tokyo.”
Thunder strike to skittle Stags in U/14 Sydney rugby Grand Final
RYDE Thunder Rugby Club’s talented Under 14C team have capped a memorable 2019 season by clinching a deserved Sydney Junior Rugby Union premiership trophy. The Thunder colts toppled Chatswood Stags 18-12 in the recent Sydney Junior Rugby Union Grand Finals at Dural Park to confirm their number one ranking. Joel Wilson’s skilful Ryde charges were hopeful of going one step further after finishing minor premiers and trouncing Petersham 43-5 in an earlier semi-final. During the season the Ryde boys recorded two wins and a loss against Chatswood, so it could have gone ei-
ther way. Following the opening exchanges, Ryde took an early lead via a penalty goal by captain Harley Wilson. Chatswood struck back not long after with a one on one strip leading to their first try and what was to become the half time score of 5-3. Ryde’ defensive effort was outstanding all game, most notably the try saving cover tackle late in the first half by centres Armani Martin and Cooper Edwards which resulted in the Chatswood winger
stepping into touch. Message from coach Wilson at the interval was to lift intensity and the team responded. Early in the second half, a 60m runaway intercept try by Cooper Edwards was converted to put Ryde 10-5 ahead before some sustained phases resulted in Chatswood grabbing a converted try to lead 12-10. Ryde regained the lead with another penalty goal and it was game on. Both teams did well at retaining possession through
numerous phases but Ryde’s forwards gained the upper hand with prop Nick Ashdown and hooker Hugh Spackman leading the way with strong games. This spadework resulted in Ashdown scoring a wellearned try to extend the Thunder’s lead to a premiership winning score of 18-12. Ryde officials congratulated both teams for a game played in the right spirit with the championship trophy a just reward for the Thunder after a consistent 2019 season.

Stout hearted Hawks win Sydney Shield thriller By CHRIS KARAS
RYDE EASTWOOD took a giant step towards securing a Grand Final berth in the NSWRL Sydney Shield competition after a dramatic 26-22 extra time victory over minor premiers Cabramatta in a pulsating qualifying final last Saturday at St Marys Leagues Stadium. The courageous Hawks showed their champion qualities to sink the Two Blues in a crackerjack tussle and zoom into title calculations. Walt Wilson’s charges produced a stirring second half comeback in blustery conditions to force the finals fixture into extra time - with star utility back Josh Rizk grabbing the matchwinning try after 84 minutes. Trailing 22-8, the Hawks turned on the style to post four unanswered tries in the final 13 minutes and level the scores after regulation time. In a barnstorming finish, Ryde Eastwood’s crafty hooker Tristan Evans-Tsoi crossed twice and winger Kirk Patton notched another to rattle their Cabramatta rivals. It was a super effort from the high flying Hawks who were best served by Evans-Tsoi, punishing lock Angus McElroy and tough prop Callum Ellis. Earlier the Two Blues drew first blood when prop Anzacsemi Aviata crashed over for a 7th minute try before the Hawks hit back with late first half tries to centre Bradley Cousins and the versatile Rizk to lead 8-4 at the interval. Cabramatta grabbed their opportunities after the break as they opened up a handy 14 point lead with crucial tries by hooker Solomon Tomokino, prop Nick Toomata and half back Brandon Finnegan. But with dynamo hooker Evans-Tsoi stamping his mark the Hawks rallied
- getting on a roll to blitz the minor premiers with their speed and skill on the edges. Evans-Tsoi a prolific try scoring number nine who was freely tipped to claim the Sydney Shield Player of the Year Award at the NSWRL Brad Fittler Medal Night at The Star Event Centre on Monday - sparked the Hawks with his tricky running to nab a try double in the space of nine minutes. With the scores locked 22-all at full time the scene was set for a gripping finale. Hawks’ trump card Rizk - who could
only convert one of his team’s six tries stole the show with a dazzling four pointer in extra time to seal a spirited triumph. Ryde Eastwood will now face the winner of this weekend’s elimination semi final between Moorebank Rams and St Marys in a Grand Final qualifier on either Saturday September 21 or Sunday September 22 at Kogarah Jubilee Oval. RYDE EASTWOOD 26 (J Rizk 2, T EvansTsoi 2, B Cousins, K Patton tries; J Rizk gl) d CABRAMATTA 22 (A Aviata, S Tomokino, N Toomata, B Finnegan tries; B Finnegan 3 gls).

Legendary swim coach Ursula Carlile leaves enduring legacy
IT WAS a special night recently when legendary swimming coach and matriarch Ursula Carlile officially signed off from her duties with Ryde Carlile Swimming Club. For nearly 60 years the master coach has taught thousands of young swimmers how to dive and was the starter at Friday night club races. On a milestone evening in front of an adorning crowd the 82 year old swimming icon also presented Ryde Carlile’s NSW representatives with their State caps. These included Warwara Harol, Indiana Morgan, Sonia Lee, Keira Lee-Koksal , Salome Blandon, Yvie Wei, Jessica Cullen, Tegan Kim, Amy Linssen, Isobel Mulcahy, Claire Needs, Roy Ma, Oliver Wilson, Hugo Schindler, Justin Yi, Ciaran Wilde, Isabella Blandon Cano, Mia Cleary, Olivia Siau, Eva Moles, Etienne Zuffrey, Lachlan James, Christian Hadjidakis, Lev Tomalev, Riley Koskal-Lee and Harry Burton. The accomplished mentor was honoured earlier this year at the TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Gala Dinner at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club - earn-
ing a special Contribution to Sport award for yeoman service to local swimming. Ryde Carlile Swimming Club life member and valued Ryde Sports Foundation committeeman Terry Wilson paid tribute to the doyen of swimming coaches when presenting her with the award on the night. “In a very special and unique way Ursula has played a priceless role in the lives of the many swimmers and water polo players who have received the RSF awards over the last 49 years,” said Terry. “At the same time Ursula has forged a global profile of her own in the highly competitive and challenging world of swimming,” he said. Back in 1960 Ursula, along with her husband Forbes, was appointed to the Australian Olympic swimming coaching team as Sports Science advisers for the Rome Olympics. Ursula was the world leader in taking a scientific approach to sports perfor-
mance. In 1964, Ursula and Forbes were again making a global splash when they were appointed as the joint coaches of the Dutch swimming team for the Tokyo Olympics – this was the beginning of a long and close relationship between Australian and Dutch swimming. 1972 was the highlight of Ursula’s coaching career, being chosen as Australia’s first women Olympic swimming coach for the Munich Olympic Games. And there was no doubting why she was with five of her own swimmers from the Ryde club in the Australian squad – including swimmers who became household names in Australian Sport in the great Shane Gould, Karen Moras, Jenny Turrell, and Gail Neill. Gould was the star of those Olympic Games at the age of 15 – winning three gold medals, all in world record time. In 1971 she held the world record in every female freestyle event from
100m to 1500 metres. “When Ryde Council built the original Ryde Swimming Centre in 1961, Ursula and Forbes became its first coaches,” he revealed. “The many thousands of young Ryde children who have learnt to swim at this centre are a contribution to local sport that can’t be quantified. Many of those swimmers have progressed to being the parents and grandparents of Carlile taught swimmers. In the early days many were taught by Ursula. In recent times the teachers have been a long list of young Ryde coaches who found Carlile Swimming a rewarding career starter under Ursula’s guidance. “Ursula has been on the committee of Ryde Carlile continuously until today with many years as its Head Coach - nearly six decades of sterling service.” She leaves an enduring legacy on swimming and in particular, the established and successful Ryde Carlile club.

Tigers favourite son Robbie Farah was farewelled by a sellout packed crowd of fans and supporters at Leichhardt Oval HQ on Sunday. Robbie made a surprise last minute appearance after fullback Corey Thompson was a scratching with an Achilles injury during pre-match warm up just minutes before kick-off. Robbie had made a miraculous recovery from a broken leg just 28 days earlier and had been ruled out of playing on his last day at Leichhardt. He ran on wearing an unfamiliar 21 on his back in the 55th minute when the scoreline wasn’t looking too flash for the home side. And the refs weren’t too accommodating either. But the Tigers remain favourites for grand final honours south of the border for our Mexican
