Pizza maestro wins top local award
The team at the Via Napoli Restaurant in Lane Cove said they are over the moon with winning the Best Outstanding Restaurant Award during this week’s Northern District Local Business Awards. The Via Napoli Restaurant was founded in Lane Cove in 2011 by Luigi Esposito with the aim of recreating the traditional pizzas of his home city of Napoli as well as replicating the authentic atmosphere of a Neopolitan restaurant. “Neapolitans take their pizza very seriously,” Mr Esposito told The Weekly Times. “We are a big Neopolitan family and the atmosphere here at Via Napoli in Lane Cove is fun and is bustling with the activity and excitement of a family restaurant in Napoli.” Restaurant staff are thrilled to have won the award – the second local business award won in the last two years – and thank the patrons and guests who nominated Via Napoli. “Everyone here is over the moon to have won this prestigious award, especially so because this award reflects the passion and enjoyment of our valued patrons.” ‘'We thank everyone who supported us and who are very much a part of the Via Napoli family tradition.” To read the Via Napoli story go to Pages 24 and 25 in this week’s edition. Letters to the Editor Climate Change? No, Weather Change! Dear Sir, A handy synopsis of the background to and a recommended way forward for Conserviatives to respond to the latest scaremongering by the Socialist Left Eco-Warriors using the child catastrophist Greta Thunberg to drive their marketing campaign among the gullible. We need to do no less by way of meeting one marketing (misinformation) campaign with a better (more honest) marketing campaign. And this time, the agents of the Fake News Industry have created a new hero in Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish girl who challenged the world (well the West, actually) during a dramatic, emotion-laden monologue that she delivered in front of the United Nations. Thunberg’s performance was political theatre at its absolute best—or worst, depending upon how one looks at it. That being said, that this adolescent believes at least some of the nonsense she espoused is a proposition few would doubt. The adults by whom she’s been raised and educated have undoubtedly been hard at work brainwashing her from a very early age into thinking that the Earth is about to bring its 4.5 billionyear run to a cataclysmic end. To further compound her anxieties, little Greta has been taught two other ideas that fundamentally distinguish the Godless apocalyptic scenario to which she subscribes from its traditional, theocentric counterpart: First, the Earth’s implosion will result in the sheer obliteration of all human beings. There is no afterlife to which the apocalypse will lead. Second, human beings can stop the apocalypse. We can stop the world from ending. We just won’t. From a traditional Christian perspective, there is nothing that human beings can do to prevent God from fulfilling His own will. Within the framework of “climate change,” however, the framework within which
Greta has been reared, Armageddon is avoidable. The point I’d like to make here, though, concerns, not the left’s latest childprop, but the utter failure on the part of conservatives to fight, to genuinely fight, their enemies. The issue of “climate change” is the proverbial textbook illustration of this seemingly incorrigible ineptitude on the part of conservatives to engage in what many, including conservative media celebrities, typically describe as “political warfare.” As has long been noted, success in politics (like success in war), is ultimately a matter of “perception.” Warfare, whether in politics or on the battlefield, encompasses psychological warfare at least as much as it does physical warfare. What we perceive depends upon how we look. That those on the left are well aware of this fact is made plain by the apparent effortlessness by which they create and promote their narratives, the conceptual lenses through which an unwitting public then proceeds to view the world. It is crucial to recognize that the content of the narrative is inseparable from the container, the specific terms in which the narrative is couched. More specifically, it is these terms that constitute the narrative. Leftist ideologues originally packaged their version of the Apocalypse under the label of “Global Warming.” This nomenclature, they eventually discovered, wasn’t the best way to promote the alarmism among the populace for which they hoped, for it is difficult for the average person, relying only upon his senses, to feel in his bones that the Earth was inching ever-closer toward its incineration while he is experiencing for himself winters with historically-unprecedented cold temperatures. “Global warming,” as potentially ominous as it may strike the ears of many, simply couldn’t move people in the ways in which endless anecdotal evidence moves them. So these secular millennialists decided to revisit their marketing strategies. As if overnight, they opted to replace “Global Warming” with…“Climate Change.”

The move was a sensible one. “Climate Change” simultaneously served two purposes: on the one hand, the term “climate,” precisely because it is not a term used all that often by the average person, sounds sufficiently scientific: the climate is a subject for experts. On the other hand, radically unlike the idea that the planet is on its way toward becoming an ember, that the climate is forever undergoing changes, and often fairly abrupt, dramatic changes, is selfevident. What conservatives and other Armageddon skeptics must do, though, is change the narrative by selecting terms that lay bare for all with eyes to see the Climate Changers’ central claim for what it is: The weather is changing. The Global Warmiststurned-Climate Changers wax hysterical from the rooftops over the fact that the weather changes. It is the omnipresent fact that the weather changes that (allegedly) has the alarmists up at night. It is the phenomena of changes in the weather that the left would have us believe constitute the biggest existential crisis facing the planet. Now, there isn’t a single soul wailing and gnashing over “Climate Change” that would so much as think of substituting “Weather Change” for his crisis of choice. The reason for this is as obvious as, and has everything to do with, the selfevident nature of the subject itself: The weather is and has always been incessantly changing. In fact, inasmuch as the term “weather,” being but a short-hand term for a manifold of meteorological phenomena, practically by definition implies variation. “Weather” is like the term “universe” in that it refers to the totality of a complex of ever-changing things. Moreover, unlike “climate,” “weather” is about as mundane a term as any. Everyone knows about the weather, and it doesn’t require a degree in climatology or geo-science to recognize that some days are sunny and warm, other days snowy and cold, etc. When we identify the subject under consideration here for what it is by calling it Weather Change, the position of the alarmists is reduced to the absurdity that it has always been. But in order to accomplish this end, conservatives need to first be willing to take that first step and create their own narrative—one that reflects reality. JIM SIMPSON Convenor Climate Realists of Five Dock
Morrison, king of spin and BS Dear Sir, I am writing in response to the Australian Taxpayers Alliance (ATA) letter “Aust must boycott UN climate summit” published in the TWT 2/10/2019. Well, the ATA certainly haven’t let the facts interfere with their media release. The fact is that Australia was snubbed by the UN ahead of the Climate Sum-
mit because of its global reputation as a climate action laggard. Scott Morrison decided not to attend, even though he was in the US at the time, preferring to throw Environment Minister Marise Payne under the bus instead. Australia was also roundly criticised by our vulnerable neighbours at the Pacific Islands Forum in Tuvalu weeks before. Scott Morrison wasn’t happy at all with widespread comments that he was running a “denialist government” so he decided to give the UN General Assembly a pep talk about how good Australia was actually going in dealing with climate change. Perhaps the CEO of the Climate Council summed it up best when she said, “Scott Morrison’s speech and his claim that Australia was doing enough on climate change was “colossal bullshit”. ”He performed like a suburban loudmouth talking crap to his mates over the barbie; not so much unconcerned about truth as seemingly unaware that such a thing exists”. The Department of Environment and Energy projections released in December 2018 show Australia is not on track to meet its current target. The Climate Council says “Australia’s Kyoto targets were among the weakest in the world, and that the government’s data proves our emissions are actually increasing”. A further example of Australia’s climate “wallflower” status and its lack of serious commitment is the Coalition’s withdrawal from funding the Green Climate Fund and its need to resist pressure from within its own ranks to withdraw Australia from the Paris climate agreement altogether. Hunters Hill Guest Column Creative Doves are Sewing for Soldiers
QUESTION: What is the “common thread” linking a small group of schoolchildren in Gladesville to members of our Australian defence force personnel serving overseas in remote locations?
Answer: A sewing machine… some material… an opportunity to learn new skills… and a desire to offer recognition and service to others. In an age dominated by computerised devices and with our children immersed in personal software games here we have a group of young students who have chosen to develop practical skills, viz. sewing, and use these skills to create useful items for strangers. In this activity it is fellow Australians serving thousands of kilometres away from their own families and friends. * * * THE “Creative Doves” are five young girls in Year 6 at Our Lady Queen of Peace school at
To The POINT with JULIE SIMON
Gladesville. They are carrying on a school tradition where they learn sewing skills and then make useful, practical items which are given to people in need. The girls in the group - Elyse Smith, Sophie Haddad, Isabella Calleja, Holly Mizens and Lara Wisemantel get together once each week at school and sacrifice their lunchbreak to do their sewing. They are coordinated by Julie Simon, one of the school’s Learning Support Officers and Mrs Sharon Smith who is one of the girls’ mothers. * * * THIS LATEST project, on behalf of Aussie Hero Quilts, provided individual laundry bags with care packs for Australian troops serving overseas. Previous offerings earlier this year included rainbow
quilts for the Handmade With Love project and chair bags for school children in Townsville who had lost everything in local floods. In this laundry bag initiative, it reminds our Australian troops that they are not forgotten…. that we are grateful and thankful for their service and sacrifice. This sewing activity is also a wonderful opportunity for young people to demonstrate the virtue of “giving” and at the same time truly living out their OLQP school values of mercy, human dignity, justice and service in the tradition of the founding Sisters of Mercy. JULIE SIMON is the Learning Support Officer at Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School Gladesville
Scouts partner council in bee project THE HUNTERS Hill Scouts will partner Hunters Hill Council to create a local variety of honey as part of a stingless native bee project. The partnership offers environmental benefits and it is hoped that local residents will also join the partnership. “Native stingless bees are key pollinators for our bushlands, but are at risk of decline from increased clearing and pesticide use,” Hunters Hill Clr Elizabeth Krassoi said. “ It is hoped that this educational project will excite residents, young and old, about protecting our small habitats and our small but important creatures. “The project will also include identifying a safe location for Council’s community native bee hive, hosting an educational event and demonstration to encourage residents to establish their own hives, planting a garden bed pantry full of the ingredients that bees need to make their honey.”
Along the theme of reuse and recycling, the Scouts will use some long abandoned dinghies from Council’s storage to make garden beds. “We enjoyed a walk in the rain followed by hot tea and cake with Scout leaders Gigi (Lori Graff) and Kathy Ward, native and per-
maculture landscape expert Steve and Wahroonga Council Native Bee Volunteer Alison,” Clr Krassoi said. “Some early ideas have formed and some exciting plans are afoot for a shared native bee project that aims to enrich the Scout learning program, but also to
reach into the Municipality to share and collaborate as much as possible. “This sort of collaboration and eco focus ticks a whole heap of Community Strategic Plan boxes, but business aside, it will just be great fun and a win for the bees and for community partnerships”

TWT Granny Smith Festival Queen Quest
Gala 2019 Queen Quest Presentation This Saturday in Eastwood Shopping Centre This year’s TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen will be named and crowned on stage at Eastwood Shopping Centre this Saturday at 11am. Eleven contestants will face the judging panel this afternoon in Eastwood Shopping Centre tower 160 Rowe Street Eastwood. The Queen and Grand Finalists will star in next Saturday’s October 19 Grand Parade through the streets of Eastwood and return to centre court stage after the Parade for prizegiving which includes: $1,000 First Prize courtesy Eastwood Shopping Centre $500 First Runner-up $250 Third Prize
Christine Wang - Who doesn’t like apples, and who wouldn’t want to be queen? Honestly, who needs beauty pageants when you can become an apple queen? 7,500 types of apples in the world, but I chose Granny Smith
Kimberley Spencer - My interest in the history of the Granny Smith apple, started from a young age when my sister and two cousins, would walk with my Gran to the local lolly shop and on the way visit Ray Park. Being Granny Smith Festival Queen would allow me to share my passion about our local area, as well as volunteering and I would encourage and support others to get involved in the wide range of opportunities that our local area offers us. It would also allow me to be more involved in a range of different opportunities.
Sandra Hodgekiss - I love Granny Smith apples and they make an excellent apple pie and it will make my grandsons proud.
Victoria Kopacheva - This is not just an application, it is a challenge to myself, to society and to other mothers like me. Our society believes that if you are a mother, you cannot be the queen in the competition. If you are over thirty, then you should not think about competitions. Many of my friends are beautiful mothers of different nationalities who hide their talents and beauty, because they think that their time has passed. Laura Middleton - The opportunity to hold the title of Granny smith festival Queen for 2019 would allow me to gain a platform to spread awareness for critical issues within our community. I am particularly concerned about the growing rate of food insecurity within our local and broader community. I have met with the CEO of Food Bank Australia to speak about strategies that could be used to eradicate food insecurity and educate families on food nutrition. I believe that if I am crowned Festival Queen, I will be better placed to make a more considerable difference in this field.

HEALTH
FOOT HEALTH WEEK
Put your best foot forward this week
HUNTERS HILL Podiatry practice is celebrating Foot Health Week and want readers of The Weekly Times to take this opportunity to have their feet checked.
Podiatrist Sam Lewis reminds readers about the importance of daily foot checks and the role of the podiatrist working along side doctor as part of a personal health care team. ‘’Podiatrists are specialist in the lower limb and feet and it is our job to work with your doctor to ensure your feet don’t get in the way of you living your life,’ he said. Mr Lewis stressed that feet house a quarter of the bones within the body and it is important to take proper care of them. He also stressed that a foot check up can reveal other medical conditions. “When was the last time you or you doctor had a close look at your feet? “Whilst not the prettiest part of the body, our feet play an important part in our health that is often un-
derestimated and misunderstood. “Your feet are a great indicator of how your body is working and can give hints to what might be happening below the skin. “Problems like yellowed or thick nails can be a sign of issues with blood flow, corns and callus can be an indicator of poor walking technique and curled nails can even predict possible issues with lung function!” He said that with one in four older people experiencing foot pain, issues like Plantar Fasciitis, painful flat feet or in-grown nail are much more common than people think and can become more prevalent with age. “Talking to your podiatrist about your pain can help them diagnose underlying issues. “Assessing the way you
walk, the shoes you wear as well as how your feet affect your ankles, knees and hips is all part of the role of a podiatrist in helping treat the root of your pain.” Mr Lewis reassures readers that many foot related issues are treatable and can be prevented if detected early. “Chronic conditions like Diabetes can be harmful to the feet, but with your doctor and podiatrist’s help, can be well managed. “So whether it be for you or your family’s feet, remember just because your feet may be out of sight, they should never be out of mind!” For an appointment with Sam at Hunters Hill Podiatry Practice phone 9817 2080 or visit the website: hhpodiatry.com.au

Lane Cove springs into life with streets full of flowers
Wednesday 9 October, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7
LANE Cove MP Anthony Roberts recently joined Mayor of Lane Cove Councillor Pam Palmer for the official opening of the local azalea project. The project saw more than 600 azaleas planted along Epping Road between Coxs Lane and the Longueville Road intersection, funded under the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund. Other works in the project included the repair of retaining walls and the planting of native ground covering plants and installation of irrigation. The azaleas were sourced entirely from cuttings grown by Council which were taken from original azaleas on Epping Road. Further works have begun on
the section between Coxs Lane and the Longueville Road intersection and will include the removal of some azaleas and soil for structural brick and repairing structural brick. There will be a further planting of azaleas in the top terrace using plants grown from cuttings as well as a planting of native ground covering plants in the lower terrace “I was delighted with Lane Cove Council’s decision to rejuvenate the azaleas along Epping Road, and I am extremely pleased that with a contribution
from the State Government we will get to what will be a beautiful final result” Mr Roberts said. “The azaleas were planted over 30 years ago and quickly became a must see attraction for those travelling through Lane Cove”. Lane Cove Council has now cultivated over 700 azaleas seedlings which are being cared for at the Lane Cove community nursery. Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer are pictured with the azaleas.

Wednesday 9 October, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9
Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou (front row, seventh from left) is pictured at the Council Chambers last week with members of Ryde’s Chinese speaking community.
City of Ryde hosts event for Chinese speaking residents RYDE Council Chamber was packed last week as the City of Ryde hosted an information event for the local Chinese speaking community.
The event was presented by Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou and Council staff, with a focus on Council services. The event also gave the Chinese Seniors Learning Group an opportunity to learn about local libraries, halls and facilities available for community use.
A presentation on the New Heart of Ryde proposal was made and the community was told the proposed new civic centre building is being called the new Heart of Ryde because it is located on the Top Ryde site of the current but abandoned Civic Centre as well as offering a four-fold increase in community space. Deputy Mayor Zhou said the Council Chamber event was “extremely beneficial” for The City of Ryde’s Chinese speaking community. “The City of Ryde is proud of its multicultural-
ism and offers great services to our community, including those of non-English speaking backgrounds,” he said. “For instance, Council’s Library Service has a growing collection of books in languages other than English and community language newspapers that are available to all library members. “Therefore the event was extremely informative for the members of the Chinese Seniors Learning Group and I hope it encourages them to make the most of the Council services that will assist them.”
New civic centre will go out for tender but the cost is hidden from ratepayers
A CITY of Ryde proposal for a new civic centre at Top Ryde will go out for public tender next month but council staff will not reveal how much it will cost until the tender process is underway.
Councillors voted by seven votes to four to have the New Heart Of Ryde civic centre concept put out for tender with a caveat that allows councillors to withdraw from the process if necessary. Pressed on the cost to ratepayers by Liberal councillors, the council’s Director of Corporate Services Steve Kludass stressed that it would be financially irresponsible to make a budget
known to potential tenderers. “I do not want to go on public record and jeopardise the tender process but what we have said is that there will be a mix of cash returns and we will finance the debt from future developer contributions,” he said. “We will know what the cost is once we have gone through the tender process .. it is not about what I think, it is about what the
market thinks.” Mayor Jerome Laxale gave a personal assurance that the project will be financially “viable and affordable” and has gone on public record to confirm that he expects “healthy returns” from leasing office space in the new building to government and community organisations. Mr Kludass also gave assurances that the process will follow specific Department
of Local Government guidelines for the new building, to be located on the site of the existing but abandoned civic centre. “We will satisfy each and every one of them !” he said of the guidelines. He nonetheless acknowledged the risks involved. “Risk? Absolutely there is risk and that is why we have a risk management plan,” he said.
“There are 18 risks and the person we have commissioned has significant experience and I think the project is in good hands. “We have also assembled an expert team to manage project governance. “But if all things fail there are provisions in the tender process to opt out.” The Liberals questioned Mr Kludass about “the fatal risk”

of developer contributions drying up, forcing ratepayers to bail it out through a special levy, possibly on new home buyers. “With or without this project, development will go on and we have amassed $80 million in developer contributions in the last few years, this is not a stretch in anyone’s imagination,” Mr Kludass said. The Corporate Services Director’s refusal
to reveal a cost to the community prior to the tender process, left the Liberals fuming about what they see as a failure to meet ratepayers’ right to know. Councillor Moujalli (Lib) stressed that state and federal government agencies often reveal a budget estimate when a project is announced. “This is one rule for council and another rule for everyone else!” he said.

A RISK to the lives of Field of Mars Reserve visitors - forced to dash across hectic Pittwater Water to access parts of the park – has been removed with the creation of a new pedestrian and cyclist pathway.
The new pathway was completed by the City of Ryde on Friday with the construction of a new shared user footpath, an upgrade to existing footpaths to connect to the new pathway and repainting the line markings. The new shared user path is part of the City of Ryde’s commitment to creating safe and accessible pathways and was put forward as a notice of motion put forward by Clr Penny Pedersen in February 2018, which was unanimously supported by other councillors. An inspection of the pathway on Friday found a “No Pedestrian Access” sign dumped in bush land after being
repeatedly hit by cars. “This highlights the danger faced by park users, some of whom took the risk to dash onto Pittwater Road in front of traffic,” Clr Pedersen told The Weekly Times. “With this pathway that danger has been removed.” The Thomas and Cameron families were the first locals to walk the path on Friday and stressed how important it would be to younger children, whose road sense is not fully developed. “You shudder to think what would happen to a child who could fall off a bike on this busy stretch of Pittwater Road.” Councillor Pedersen
said the pathway will be used by a range of people in the community. “ The shared user pathway also allows shoppers and workers from East Ryde and North Ryde to safely access Buffalo Creek Reserve, Boronia Park and Hunters Hill,” she said. “Gladesville families and workers will be able to walk into East Ryde, North Ryde and to the railway.” The project has been a passion for Clr Pedersen, a regular Field of Mars Reserve user, albeit a frustrated one. “My involvement with this issue started with a letter to council nine years ago as a mother of young children beg-
ging for safe pedestrian access and “I was told by council in 2010 that it was already in a 2008 plan and would be finalised in a year or two. “When I was elected in 2017, seven years later, we still found families forced to drive and pay for parking (in Hunters Hill) to a park we could easily have walked to. “If they chose to walk they were forced onto the shoulder of the road into oncoming traffic. “Try that with two toddlers and their bikes ! “I also suggested that a warning sign for pedestrians be erected, which was put up but was, ironically, hit by vehicles.”

Parramatta News and Views
Have your say on how Parramatta is being planned for the future COMMUNITY comment is being sought by the City of Parramatta on a Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement.
The City of Parramatta communications team said the Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) is Council’s 20-year vision (20162036) for land use planning for the City of Parramatta and community imput is vital to the plan’s development. “We are seeking community input into the draft vision, with the aim of working together to decide how we would like to see our city grow; to be a thriving place to live, work and play now and into the future. “In 20 years, Parramatta will be a bustling, cosmopolitan and vibrant metropolis, the Central City for Greater Sydney. “It will be a Smart City that is well connected to the region, surrounded by high quality and diverse residential neighbourhoods with lots of parks and green spaces. “It will also be innovative and creative and be well supported by strong, productive and competitive employment precincts. “It will be a place that people will want to be a part of.”
Housing Strategy To ensure the Draft LSPS addresses future housing supply appropriately, Council has prepared a Draft Local Housing Strategy. “ A number of Growth Precincts concentrate much of the growth at Camellia, Carter Street, Epping, Granville, Parramatta CBD, Parramatta North, Parramatta East, Melrose Park, Telopea, Wentworth Point and Westmead. “These precincts will be the focus of new housing and will align with major transport hubs.” The population of the City of Parramatta is expected to double over the next two decades.and the Council has developed four Planning Priorities to guide the proposed 20 year vision. These include housing and jobs are delivered as infrastructure is built, local infrastructure and public transport options.
The community will also have a say on a range of housing types and affordable rental housing. The contemporary and vibrant café, on a quiet corner of Pittwater Road in Gladesville, is owned and run by young husband-and-wife team, Michael and Amanda Cavallaro, serving a delectable breakfast and lunch menu alongside locally-roasted coffee to the folk of Gladesville and
beyond. “It really is a dream come true and we never thought we would win this prestigious award two years in a row,” says Michael Cavallaro. “And it is credit to our outstanding staff and loyal customers who have supported us since the moment we opened our doors. “We love what we do, and it’s great to be recognised for our hard work and dedication.” The cafe has an inviting and warm
Boronia Bakehouse: Part of the landscape for more than three decades Boronia Bakehouse has been part of the landscape at Boronia Park for more than 30 years. Opened in 1987, owners Sue-Ellen and Rob had a vision to provide the local community with the freshest and best bakery items. Over the years, Boronia Bakehouse’s products have become famous — gorgeous breads and rolls; traditional neenish tarts and vanilla slices; those wonderful Wimbledon tarts, full of fresh cream and strawberries; on to handmade pies and of course, their bestselling sausage rolls. Cakes for all occasions, from dessert-style tiramisu and chocolate mousse through to their most popular tower cakes. With four blends of coffee available, all tastes are covered when you drop in for your favourite brew. Try their favourite, the Jet Fuel dark blend. feel complemented by its extensive brunch menu. Cav & Co knows brunch and that’s evident with its weekend brunch crowds. There’s a variety of brunch dishes from acai bowls to burgers, but with a unique twist. Try the Cavocado Smash, the avo favourite reworked; and the popular Cavlova French Toast, a take on the Australian classic pavlova - and that’s just to name a couple.
“We are always working with our talented chefs to create new and different inspiring dishes”, Mr Cavallaro says. Like the name Cav & Co suggests, the staff are no ‘side serve’ to the café’s dining experience; they are a ‘main course’. “We pride ourselves in making our customers happy and believe the most important element to our business is our friendly ‘family feel’ service,” Mr Cavallaro says.

Working parents to have a say on after school care
Business people are being invited to have their say on the State Government’s new Before and After School Care initiative. The Before and After School Care initiative will be available to children at all NSW Government primary schools by 2021. “The New South Wales government knows how important it is for working parents to have access to flexible, affordable and convenient child care services, which is why we are rapidly rolling out this initiative,” Epping MP Dominic Perrottet said. “Hearing directly from families will help us understand their needs, giving the Government better insights into where there are gaps in service delivery to ensure the extra places and new services go where they are needed most. “Parents can also use the Service NSW website to stay up to date with any new de-
velopments in their area.” Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said applications have also opened for grants to assist Before and After School Care services to set up or expand their services with the costs of new facilities and equipment. “This Government’s $120 million investment in Before and After School Care includes $50 million for new equipment and facilities, $40 million for rental subsidies to reduce costs to parents and $20 million to help schools where a standalone service may not be viable, including smaller schools and rural and remote communities,” Ms Mitchell said. Outstanding Business Person of the Year pays tribute to clients, families and carers The 2019 Northern Districts Local Business Awards Outstanding Business Person of the Year, Iani Sujono of Sound Expression, said she was greatly honoured and has thanked clients, families and carers. The 2019 Northern Districts Local Business Awards Outstanding Business Person of the Year, Iani Sujono of Sound Expression, said she was greatly honoured and has thanked clients, families and carers. “They are the reason we exist,” she said. “It’s very humbling to win this award in a field of very worthy finalists.” Sound Expression is a music therapy clinic in North Ryde with a friendly team of Registered Music Therapists who are passionate about helping children and adults with disability through music therapy work. “We work very hard to achieve this,” she said. “We know that the effort is worth it, when we see the achievements of our clients – like when we see a nonverbal child vocalise for the
first time or when we see a child learn to play alongside another in music and take turns.” On the first day the clinic opened in 2015, Iani opened the door to the clinic and sat all alone, with no local network and no client base to start with. “Fast forward four years, we now have more than 160 clients come to our clinic each week,” Ms Sunojo said. “We have a team of six awesome Registered Music Therapists, an amazing administrator, dedicated volunteers, and many Masters Students hungry to learn the craft of being a music therapist. “It has been an amazing journey so far and we look forward to seeing many more goals being achieved by our clients. A huge ‘thank you’ once again, for this enormous honour.”

South African gourmet delights to really whet your appetite SPRINGBOK Delights at 656 Mowbray Road Lane Cove North is a unique fresh food store. such as Mrs Ball’s chutney, All Gold tomato sauce, Ouma Rusks and Koeksisters. From the start they made customer service their focus and most of their customers are to this day their friends like mate Steve who came up with the name for the shop. Word of Springbok Delights and their products quickly spread and before long they had a very loyal customer base, most of whom they still serve! Supplying a few restaurants and shops with Biltong and Boerewors, it quickly grew into a separate wholesale business and today they supply over 80 shops, deli’s and restaurants in and around Sydney as well as a few interstate. In September 2006 they opened The Biltong Man, their factory in Mascot from where they manufacture all Boerewors and air-dried beef products. They also age all their own beef at this HACCP accredited facility to ensure consistency in the product they sell in their shops. In October 2018 they moved to Seven Hills. In 2003 they opened another store, African Delights, in Round Corner, Dural, to
serve clientele in the Hills area. A family business from day one, they were joined by Reon’s sister Inge in 2007 to manage the administrative side of the business and head up new projects. In July 2007 they bought the Fruit and Veg business next door and renovated both shops. In September 2007 they opened the doors to a brand new store that includes a state of the art gourmet butchery, a cellar with arguably the biggest range of South African beer, wine and sprits in NSW (if not Australia), a fresh Fruit and Veg department and of course loads of imported South African groceries. The team at Springbok Delights are very involved with the South African community, attending and catering for South African supporters get togethers and other events. Springbok Delights was the main sponsor for SAvents, an event management company that recently hosted a TriNations Bash at Ryan’s Bar in the city with great success. Being the first of many, they look forward to many more such events in future.
Thank you….Thank you This award is also for our loyal and regular customers, our corporate businesses and local school communities and for everyone who voted for us and to our friendly staff who all support us.

Starting the conversation
JOHN begins his morning, as he has many times over the last 12 months, answering an ordinary question from his wife. ‘What’s the plan for today?’ Once there was little to offer someone with dementia, but now this is not the case. Research has discovered much more about the condition and the different types. Alzheimer’s disease is still the most common type of dementia. “It is important that the diagnosis is made as early as possible, so that treatment can be prescribed to slow the progression of the symptoms. This is not a cure, but just like Parkinson’s disease, medication can help with symptom control and improve quality of life,” says A/Prof Kathryn Goozee, KaRa Institute of Neurological Diseases. “So, start the conversation early. If the person is aware of their memory changes (which can be the case) you need to focus on the ‘treatments’ that are currently available.
“Advances in diagnostic technology have paved the way for promising international clinical trials to be available in Sydney. Clinical trials offer careful monitoring and enable access to the most promising treatments,” says A/Prof Goozee. A/Prof Goozee goes on to say that if the person has little or no insight into their memory issues, the conversation can be more about a comprehensive health check. Rather than only focussing on the person with possible dementia, suggest a review for them and for the person providing support. A dual check-up is harder to argue with. Once a person agrees to have a memory check, it’s important to ensure this happens in a clinic that focuses on dementia. Often, opportunities are lost by at-

ing anxiety for instance, are way too harsh on themselves, and not firm enough in demanding respect from others. It is worth the trouble it takes to earn our own selfrespect. It is worth “sharpening the saw” as author Stephen Covey recommends in his classic book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In so doing, we tend to monitor and direct ourselves through all the minefields of life, in a way that contributes to what I think of as good mental health. I have seen over and over again that it tends to be those for whom the outer life presents the most difficult circumstances, that tend to get propelled, pushed or prodded to dig deep into their inner motivations, who ultimately grow the most in forming mature and accurate perceptions of reality. In order to learn to love ourselves and others well, we need to examine, quell and master our unwise thoughts, instead of being buffeted around and driven by them like a helpless puppet. Therapy, meditation and mindfulness practice help immeasurably in coming to know and train our minds to serve us and others better, just as the vitality of exercise fine-tunes our bodies. You might ask why we would bother with holding ourselves to high moral standards? To be seen as good person and get a pat on the back? No. Because it works. Because greater mental discipline leads to a better life, greater life satisfaction and fulfilment, and ultimately, ‘good’ mental health. Taking out the Northern Suburb’s Local Business Award for 2019 in the Professional Services category has been an achievement ten years in the making for family business owners Melanie and Jeffrey Tonazzi, who have been faithfully serving the local community for the better part of the last decade. “First and foremost we’d like to thank everyone who has come into contact with the firm over the last twelve months”, said Principal Solicitor Melanie (pictured). Whether we’ve executed your will, had a crisis call in an emergency family law or criminal matter or shared in the joy of your first home purchase, it’s been an honour and a privilege to try and untangle the messy web that is our Australian legal system for all of you.” And they’re not stopping anytime soon, with a larger litigation office having opened in the heart of the Macquarie Park in June, the team have huge plans heading in to 2020. “We are better placed than ever before to be able to deliver exceptional legal services to the everyday consumer. We remain committed to the timely and effective resolution of the existing matters we have in the practice, and can’t wait to meet some new faces in the coming months.”

ON THE eve of October 10, World Mental Health day, it is worth considering: what is ‘good’ mental health? One of my favourite yardstick answers to the question of what constitutes good mental health (as opposed to poor mental health, or mental illness), is this: a person who is mentally healthy will have a reasonably accurate perception of reality. Not only will they have an accurate-enough perception of their own nature and what motivates them, ie, their own internal world; but also they would be fairly astute as to what makes the external world tick. They would have a capacity for compassion, tolerance and understanding in regard to other people and cultures. I have spent decades trawling hundreds of psychological and spiritual books, searching for inspirational nuggets about what helps us to grow, mature, and blossom into a psychologically healthy adulthood that can steward us well in the endeavour to lead a good life. It seems one of the most important contributors to enduring good mental health is the willingness to reflect on our own thoughts and behaviour and ultimately become more accountable – not only to others – but importantly, to ourselves. To be willing to review our behaviour with an aim to do a bit better next time, next opportunity. Not in a punitive way - but in a firm, kind and committed way. Both the positive psychology movement and neuroscience in the last couple of decades has begun to tap into a rich vein of profound wisdom that mystical traditions like Buddhism and Sufism have been mining with deep discrimination for centuries. Modern psychological researcher, Martin Seligman,
has identified three main roads to what he calls “authentic happiness”. First, there is the pursuit of simple or momentary pleasures – experiences that are fun or exciting. These however don’t make for lasting happiness. Secondly, there is the satisfaction that comes from the capacity for absorption and engagement in personally worthwhile endeavours. Thirdly, and most powerfully, is the deep and lasting fulfilment that comes from dedication to some cause greater than oneself. The sense of being useful and effective – whether at work or at play – helps energise us to serve ourselves and our communities at the same time, which in turn can help us protect other species and the delicately balanced ecosystem of our fragile planet. A wonderful book by David Brooks, called The Road to Character, describes two kinds of virtues – the “resume” virtues and the “eulogy” virtues. The “resume” virtues are our ambitions and actions that are easily recognised by the external world. They are the kind of achievements we might list on our CV. The “eulogy” virtues are developed and judged by ourselves, for our own sake, in our own inner moral chamber. They are what used to be referred to as “good character”. These are the attributes that others will remember us for at our funeral - whether we have been kind, compassionate, courageous, diligent, loyal and importantly, what kind of relationships we formed. Whether we were a good friend, parent, or citizen. There can be great value – when anxiety, stress or depression strikes - in taking time out to examine the thoughts and emotions that drive us there by default. Sometimes an overhaul of these can be helpful. Many people suffer-
tending a non-specialised clinic. If people are told ‘there is nothing to worry about and that most people have memory issues’, chances are they will not return again for a very long time, and the problem re-

It’s a common enough question in anyone’s home. “When you need to answer the same question up to six times in the first hour of the day, it starts to wear out a person’s patience,”John admits. He first noticed changes in his wife’s behaviour about three years ago when they were traveling overseas. Alice was highly anxious. She locked herself out of the hotel room, and on one occasion, returned to the hotel room much later than expected, without a clear explanation about what had happened. Often, one of the most challenging aspects to dementia is getting a person to accept that they may need a memory test. They may respond in anger or denial, determined that it’s not going to happen.

Northern Districts Local Business Awards WINNERS
The award winning dining experience that brings Napoli Pizza to Lane Cove A LANE COVE restaurant that prides itself on tradition, authenticity and excellence won the Best Outstanding Restaurant Award at last Wednesday night’s Northern District Business Awards event. The Via Napoli Restaurant was founded in Lane Cove in 2011 by Luigi Esposito with the aim of recreating the traditional pizzas of his home city of Napoli as well as replicating the authentic atmosphere of a Neopolitan restaurant. This combination of tradition and authenticity ensures that dining at Via Napoli is a unique and memorable experience that captures the spirit of dining in Napoli as well as the genuine taste sensation of the city, where the Esposito family have a dining tradition that stretches back many generations. From the age of eight Luigi followed his grandparents around the streets of Naples selling pagniottiello and freshly made pizza fritta covered by a blanket in a pram on the side of the streets. At 15 he was part of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana and Associazione Regina. He believes that a true Neapolitan pizza must be baked in a wood-fired, domed oven at 485°C for no more than 60 to 90 seconds; that the base must be hand-kneaded by rolling it with your fingers and that the pizza must not exceed 35 centimetres in diameter or be more than one-third of a centimetre thick at the centre. This strong believer in authenticity and tradition began working in the most famous pizzerias in Naples where the pizza bases are soft and pliable. “Neapolitans take their pizza very seriously,” Mr Esposito said. “We are a big Neopolitan family and the atmosphere here at Via Napoli in Lane Cove is fun and bustling with the activity and excitement of a family restaurant in Napoli.
“This is why we are so popular with local families and with corporate events.” Mr Esposito’s team is also driven by a philosophy that incorporates the traditional values of exceptional service. Restaurant staff are thrilled to have won the award – the second award won in the last two years – and thank the patrons and guests who nominated Via Napoli. “Everyone here is over the moon to have won this prestigious award, especially so because this award reflects the enjoyment of our valued patrons.” ‘‘We thank everyone who supported us and who are very much a part of the Via Napoli family tradition.” The Napoli pizza tradition is unique to this region of Southern Italy and the team of chefs at Via Napoli create the traditional Napoli pizza from fresh local and imported ingredients as well as preparing the dough on site to traditional Neopolitan standards and recipes. “The highest quality produce is sourced and prepared with the respect it deserves but our main ingredient is passion, passion is everything!” A popular attraction is the one metre long pizza which is presented on the restaurant’s long tables and where young and old alike can reach across the table and grab their own slice of Napoli. Another attraction is the wood fire process that creates the pizzas and where children are welcome to watch their pizza being created from flipping the dough through to the sprinkling of the toppings and the aromatic moment when the pizza is taken from the oven with a traditional long handle
“shovel” by the accomplished chef. The restaurant is also filled with the aroma of the Napoli pizza which enhances the traditional Neopolitan decor, which combines large and bustling dining with small, romantic tables. “Pizza is not all about eating.” “The streets of Naples are filled by the smell of basil, tomato and charcoal and all the Via Napoli restaurants are designed to be filled with all these scents as the chefs prepare the pizzas. “There is not one corner of Via Napoli that does not recreate the Napoli experience with little Pulcinella masks, hanging Parma prosciuttos, chillies and flasks right in front of Sophia Loren and Tot” whom are keeping an eye on everything from the old photos on every wall.” Many of the chefs and waiters at the Via Napoli restaurants in Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Surry Hills come from Italy where they bring skills, a family tradition and a knowledge of the country to the dining experience. “We especially pride ourselves on our fried pizza, which is something unique and traditional to Napoli and is a taste sensation.” “It is very much an integral part of the experience of stepping straight into Napoli as soon as you walk into our open and welcoming restaurant.” There are a wide selection of pizzas available. Via Napoli is located at 141 Longueville Road, Lane Cove and bookings can be made by phoning 9428 3297. It is open from 5pm to 10pm Tuesday to Thursday and from noon until 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Children can watch their authentic Napoli pizza being created by expert chefs.

Six wicket milestone for Tigers pace ace Nic PACE spearhead Nic Bills (pictured) has opened the 2019-20 NSW Premier Cricket first grade season the way he left off last campaign – with a bulk of wickets for Sydney Cricket Club. The Eastwood native and former NSW tearaway bagged the impressive figures of 6-46 off 17 overs to help the Tigers dismiss reigning premiers Parramatta for 154 on the opening day of their second round fixture at Old Kings Oval last weekend. Bills, who claimed 46 scalps in the top grade last summer, demonstrated why he is a key member of the Tigers line up again this season in their quest for the Belvidere Cup. The six wicket haul capped a memorable fortnight for the Bills family with Nic’s younger sister Emily and mother Dianne tasting NSW Netball Premier League Opens championship glory with the Eastwood Ryde Hawks as a shooter and team manager respectively. It also chalked up another milestone for warrior Nic - who has now snared 151 first grade wickets for the Tigers. Rising off spinner Ben Manenti - a talented cub who is pushing for selection in the NSW Blues squad - grabbed the tidy figures of 2-28 off 14 overs as the Sydney attack dominated from the outset. Sent in to bat after the visitors won the toss, the Parramatta side were reeling at 2-2 after Bills removed Ben Abbott (0) and Brenton Cherry (0) for ducks in a dramatic start to the match. Opener TimothyWard posted a top score of 36 runs off 55 balls before Parramatta lost their third wicket with 54 runs on the board.

Maestro Milos in the hunt for more A League soccer silverware
SYDNEY FC’s midfield maestro Milos Ninkovic is targeting more trophies and a record run in the AFC Champions League for the Sky Blues this season.
Bills and Manenti wreaked havoc with the ball as the home side slumped to 8-97 and 9-113 despite a gritty 23 by Adam Turrell before tailenders Bradley Taylor (32) and Donal Whyte (21 not out) combined for a last wicket stand of 41 to make the premiers’ total respective. At stumps, the Tigers were 0-23 with openers Justin Mosca (13 not out) and Suff Hassan (10 not out) set to resume this Saturday after safely negotiating 13 overs during the final session. SECONDS: Sydney 248
(Nick Govers 74, Steve King 43no, Liam Gibson 31, Daniel Jacob 25, Matt Kent 20, Alex Bloomfield 19, Ben Aitchison 4-53, Owen Simonsen 3-47, Blair Overton 1-22, Luke McNaught 1-33, Shane Cassel 1-36) v Parramatta 0-6. THIRDS: No play; FOURTHS: No play. FIFTHS: Sydney 6-84 (Antonio Christy 24, Darcy Mooney 16 retired, Sandeep Joshi 15, Tyrone Hargreaves 1-8, Varun Lakshmanarajah 1-8, Abish Mohanaraj 1-9, Kevin Tyler 1-10, Shanuk Karandeniya 1-17) v Parramatta.
The 2019 Joe Marston Medal Winner believes the side is primed for further silverware.
“It’s nice to score goals but for me, the most important thing is to win trophies with my teammates,” Ninkovic said. “This season we should get better results in the Champions League (AFC) compared to last year. “We’ve got a good squad to go through to the second round.” The Sky Blues will be lead this season by
their newly-annointed captain, local star Alex Wilkinson and kicked off their 201920 campaign with a members-only launch event at Luna Park yesterday. Sydney FC’s first game of the season will be away to Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium, Adelaide this Friday October 11 with the first home game against Wellington Pheonix on Sunday October 20 at Leichhardt Oval. The Sky Blues have made some minor adjustments to the kick
off times for five home fixtures at Kogarah Jubilee Oval this season following the announcement that one Hyundai A-League game will be broadcast on free to air television every Saturday night. The new deal struck between the Hyundai A-League and ABC TV means a number of fixtures across the league will be changed, with televised games being shown from 5pm. The Sky Blues home matches against Melbourne Victory (Round
6), Western Sydney Wanderers (Round 18), Perth Glory (Round 23) and Newcastle Jets (Round 28) will be brought forward by 15 minutes from their original kick off times of 5.15pm and now start at the broadcast time of 5pm. Sydney FC’s Christmas and New Year holiday fixture against Melbourne City (Round 12) will also be moved from it’s original 4pm start to a later kick off time of 6.30pm, in order to accommodate a potential Westfield WLeague double header.
Cameron Sykes Memorial boosts ConnecTed Foundation
RUGBY league personalities Darryl ‘The Big Marn’ Brohman and Paul ‘Nobby’ Clarke were special guests at the final Cameron Sykes Memorial Sports Charity Luncheon held at Drummoyne Sailing Club. They are pictured with Bill McGill OAM - the grandfather of Cameron Sykes - who sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 10 of Hunter syndrome, a genetic disorder that shortens life. Bill has proved a driving force behind the fundraising for the event’s charity - the ConnecTed Foundation at the Children’s Hospital Westmead. Also pictured are Bill’s wife Dianne McGill, daughters Karen Sykes and Leanne Imbro and son-in-laws Marcus Sykes and Valentino Imbro. Funds raised to date are in excess of $220,000.
