Hunters Hill Theatre looks for volunteers

The Hunters Hill Theatre is seeking volunteers.

It especially needs production assistants, volunteers to sew and create costumes, carpenters to ensemble sets and painters to create backdrops alongside lighting, technical support and marketing volunteers.

“Volunteers are critical to the success of community theatre in Australia and Hunters Hill Theatre is no exception,” Hunters Hill Theatre President Marisa Galiazzo said.

“In fact without volunteers and some generous sponsors and advertisers, we wouldn’t exist.”

Marisa said most volunteer jobs require minimal time commitments but a team of volunteers can do amazing things in a short time.

The City of Canada Bay Museum in Concord will host a Nostalgia Day events for seniors this Saturday, February 11.

“We invite seniors to join us for our “Memories to Share” event and to share memories of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s,’’ Museum spokesperson Lois Michel OAM said.

“Bring some photographs of school days, picnics, holidays, entertainment, your first car and whatever you’d like to share and there’ll also be our local newspapers from that era on display to stimulate more memories.”

ONE HUNDRED and thirty six new trees will be planted in Rydalmere and the City of Parramatta is seeking Tree Champions to monitor their health and growth.

“Once our trees are planted in March we’re looking for Tree Champions who can report to us if a tree in their neighbourhood needs extra attention,’’ a City of Parramatta spokesperson said.

“If you join us as a Tree Champion, your job will be to send us a picture of each tree.”

Tree Champions will receive a $50 gift card when they email their three monthly check-in pics to the council.

Each tree will have a special tag with an individual tree number that records the type of tree and planting details.

Celebrating our seniors this week

The State Government’s Seniors Festival is being celebrated from February the first until February 12 and is the largest celebration for seniors in the southern hemisphere.

It’s being coordinated by New South Wales’ Department of Communities & Justice and includes a Seniors Festival Expo, the Premier’s Gala Concerts and a Comedy Show.

The theme for the 2023 NSW Seniors Festival is ‘Celebrate Together’ and festival activities are for people over the age of 60 and for people living with a lifelong disability, with

hundreds of free and discounted events.

Local events are also hosted by councils and community organisations to empowers seniors to lead safe, healthy and connected lives.

In Hunters Hill this included a Feldenkrais session at the Hunters Hill Croquet Club on Monday night hosted by MovingInTune.

Choosing the right cemetery

Knowing about the many burial and cremation options available makes it easier when selecting the proper memorial site.

Choosing a cemetery often comes during a time of immense sadness. Understanding in advance how it all works can help to decide on the most suited and preferred memorial arrangements, as well as avoid any unexpected additional costs that may come with hasty decisions.

Location It’s important to consider both the right geographical location and specific memorial position within the cemetery.

Choosing a location someone shared a connection with can be comforting and it helps if the site is easily accessible for visiting loved ones.

The particular memorial place may align with religious beliefs or may be an appropriate reflective environment for family and friends.

Pre-need and At-need Pre-need simply means funeral arrangements are

made in advance of someone passing.

These plans tend to cost less because everything is organised and paid in advance.

At-need arrangements involve organising a funeral soon after someone dies which incurs current costs.

Burial and Cremation Some cemeteries include both burial sites and cremation plots.

Burial sites are usually situated on an open lawn or among monumental areas.

Cremation plots tend to be more concentrated in a memorial wall or garden.

Other options can include crypts, vaults, legacy trees and natural burials.

Single or family plot Having a family plot allows relatives to be buried together or have their ashes placed in the same location.

This pre-planned option can provide peace of mind particularly for those want-

ing to be buried with past loved ones.

Interment (burial) rights An interment right provides the holder with an interest in the land but does not give ownership of the land.

Some interment rights are offered in perpetuity, others as renewable arrangements every 25 or 99 years.

Ongoing costs Knowing the ongoing financial commitment for any selected site is important.

It is a good idea to enquire if the cemetery provides all services with a secure guarantee of no hidden costs, and also check if a management or any annual fees are required.

He has volunteered as the NSW State Youth Commissioner, has attended the World Scout Conference in 2021, and is the Deputy Contingent Leader for the 25th World Scout Jamboree in 2023 to South Korea. ”Lloyd has been involved in several committees including the Public Funds Committee of the Board. He was a member of the Youth Program Review and is currently serving as the State International Commissioner for Scouts NSW and an Assistant Group Leader in his local Group,” Scouts NSW said.

Off to the ball ”Lloyd is currently employed full-time as the Global Customer Experience Manager for an aerial imagery and location intelligence technology company, were he focuses on finding ways to improve the Customer Experience across the company and help drive growth and retention. ”This makes him a relatable role model for many of our adult volunteers who commit to their Scouting activities while managing multiple other commitments.”

Lifeline’s first book fair for 2023 is being held on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19.

It is being held at the Civic Pavilion, The Concourse at 409 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood from 8am to 5pm.

Longueville Road makeover Dear Sir, The Longueville Road’s makeover is coming along nicely with new outdoor dining, gardens and seating.

The new paving matches the Plaza.

Parking on the eastern side will change from outdoor dining to public seating/park areas and back again.

This will improve the streetscape for pedestrians and businesses and provide a fresh new look.

The upgrade is funded by Lane Cove Council with partial funding from the ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ project, an initiative of the NSW Government.

And keep an eye out for our new mural in St Leonards off Christie Street.

It was designed and painted by artist Helen Proctor as an abstract of waterways and bushland.

Spring garden competition coming to Hunters Hill HUNTERS HILL will soon have an event to celebrate its standing as Australia’s oldest garden suburb.

The Rotary Club of Hunters Hill in partnership with Hunter’s Hill Council is bringing an inaugural Spring Garden Competition to Hunters Hill in 2023.

The competition will celebrate public and private spaces and raise funds for the maintenance of the historic Hillman Orchard, located beside Vienna Cottage in Alexandra Street, Hunters Hill.

“This will be a showcase of our amazing gardens, native habitats, balconies and courtyards, streetscapes and public places and will be a fitting celebration for Australia’s oldest garden suburb,” Hunter’s Hill Mayor Zac Miles said.

Rotary Club of Hunters Hill President Charles Amos said local garden lovers and those with a green thumb were encouraged to start planning now.

“The competition will give residents and families the chance to showcase their skills, creativity and hard work in the garden,” he said.

Entry will be free to residents living in the Hunters Hill local government area.

Hunters Hill Guest Column Our film offers Hope and an awareness of mental health

Whether we ‘Netflix and Chill’ to decompress at the end of the day, shed a tear while singing along to Adele in the car, or head to the theatre to see something that will make us laugh, we all need art.

It expands and delights us, consoles and inspires us.

Quite simply: we can’t live without it.

For many Australians, myself included, art is more than just something that guides us through life.

It is our life.

I started ALC Creative from my Woolwich apartment in 2021 after lockdowns eliminated creative work opportunities worldwide. ALC Creative is a production company built on equal opportunity to provide a platform for emerging Australian artists across several artistic modes, including theatre, audio arts and film.

I have always had a passion for the performing arts industry and a deep respect for the importance of art, but producing art certainly does not come without challenges. *** My focus for 2023 is drama short film titled Life Beyond Christine, produced in conjunction with Moonlight Motion Pictures.

Life Beyond Christine is about two broken women who connect as they individually work to overcome the trauma that haunts them as a result of the same perpetrator, psychologist Christine Hallaway.

This film sheds light on a few important issues.

It raises mental health awareness by giving a raw depiction of what struggle looks like behind closed doors.

It also makes a statement about the abuse of power from someone we trust, which is something we are learning to recognise more and more as a society.

Ultimately, Life Beyond Christine is a story about hope that demonstrates how connection – opening up to others – can help us heal.

This film aims to be high-quality and high-impact, to be released to film festivals worldwide and, eventually, the general public.

Alexandra Chambers I am extremely proud of what we are creating and particularly proud of the passionate group of emerging filmmakers collaborating on this project, including writer and actress Sarah Moon and award-winning director Margaret Thanos.

Short films and ‘co-op’ theatre are perfect learning grounds for emerging artists. *** Unfortunately, filmmaking is expensive and funding is limited.

Independent filmmakers don’t have the security or luxury of government funding and often have to fund the project themselves.

Production costs are often excessively high, even for small projects, which creates a certain inaccessibility for emerging artists eager to make their own work.

In making Life Beyond Christine, we are reliant solely on crowdfunding and philanthropy to ensure we have the funds to pay for the bare minimum essentials, with our incredible team working for a nominal fee hinging on funding success.

Back to school HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles With school now back for the 2023 year, our local roads are once again busy at drop-off and pick-up times around primary and secondary campuses.

This affects the peninsula in particular, as well as other locations such as Mary Street and Earl Street.

Our Council works closely with school principals, through our road safety program and our School Principals Committee, to promote education for road users and pedestrians.

We have been receiving ongoing feedback from our local schools, and will continue to consult with the broader community to help ensure the safety of our students.

At times, you may see Council staff out and about around schools; please be mindful that education and enforcement play a vital role in helping keep children safe, especially early in the yearly school term.

Initiatives to help keep children safe around roads will also feature in the upcoming NSW Government ‘Be Bus Aware’ campaign for Bus Safety Week (20 to 26 February), which aims to raise awareness about how to keep kids safe on and around buses.

The campaign also reminds the community that when lights are flashing on buses, they may be picking up and dropping off children.

Free kids’ story sessions

Baby Bounce has returned to library and community space The YARN, on Fridays at 11am, now that the school term has resumed.

The free sessions are designed to engage youngsters aged 0 to 3 years in stories, songs and rhymes.

Parents and carers are welcome to drop

in with their little ones on the day - bookings are not required.

The YARN also hosts free Story Time sessions, aimed at preschool-aged children, every Wednesday from 11am.

The YARN is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. So, bring a friend and come and enjoy some quiet reading time or use the workspaces and free Wi-Fi.

Cooling playgrounds

We have some incredible outdoor spaces and playgrounds in Hunters Hill and recent works have added some new shade structures in time to deal with the summer heat.

Shade sails were replaced at Weil Park in Woolwich, while preparatory works are well under way to install a new shade sail at Harding Memorial Playground in Gladesville.

The shade is being added in response to public feedback expressed during previous community consultation and is part of our ongoing upgrades to local playspaces.

Bumper crowd at Ryde’s Lunar New Year celebration

A BUMPER crowd attended City of Ryde’s Lunar New Year celebration at Eastwood Oval on Saturday.

Politicians and real estate agents alike, were out in force, with the sun gods turning it on to ensure a large crowd of families and locals enjoyed the evening’s entertainment, food and drink stalls, amusements and carnival rides.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the spectacular high pole lion dancing.

The other was seeing Ryde councillor Trenton Brown ditch the blue tie for a traditional Korean costume, a gesture that observers say, went down a treat.

between 2009 and 2012 - said the weekend’s events were a fitting way to celebrate the pandemic being put behind us. ”After having the last two years impacted by Covid, it was great to see a record number of attendees at Eastwood Oval on Saturday, including the NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet,” Clr Li told The Weekly Times. ”Everybody had a fun time. New Ngarala Public School opens in Epping

Classrooms at Epping’s newest primary school, Ngarala Public School (pronounced Nah-ra-lah) are filled with students reaping the benefits of the new $60 million facility, catering for up to 600 students from Kindergarten to Year Six. The independent candidate is a lawyer and mediator who lives in Lane Cove and is married with three children.

She needs a swing of around 14 percent to defeat Liberal Anthony Roberts MP and possibly preferences from Labor candidate, Penny Pedersen.

“We can have a strong economy, a sensible transition to sustainable energy, development which enhances our community and a better environment without kowtowing to lobby groups or vested interests,’’ she said.

“I have the energy, the commitment and the drive to deliver for the people in our electorate.”

Prime Minister’s quick Eastwood stop Prime Minister Anthony Albanese dropped into Eastwood for a quick media conference and a fundraising lunch for Labor’s Ryde candidate at the state election, Lyndal Howison, during a hectic schedule of appearances on Saturday.

Federal Police raid homes in Epping and Drummoyne

Homes in Epping and Drummoyne were raided by federal police on Wednesday night and nine people were arrested as part of a Sydney wide operation that targeted an alleged money laundering syndicate with links to China.

The raids seized $29 million in cryptocurrency, dozens of designer watches, handbags, jewellery and luxury cars worth as well as four firearms.

Police allege the syndicate operated as an “underground

bank” for organised crime and circumvented Australian laws that regulate the transfer of money from China to Australia by using an underground syndicate broker.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Kirsty Schofield said the investigation - titled Operation Avarus-Midas - was “one of the largest and most complex money laundering investigations in the AFP’s history”.

The trial of a Brazilian man accused of murdering Ryde businesswoman Cecilia Haddad (38) is expected to be delayed by months after he sensationally sacked his defence team on Wednesday.

A PISTOL was found in bushland in West Ryde and a man has been charged with unlawfully owning it.

The 35 year old was arrested around 11:20pm on Thursday, January 19 after police received information that three males, aged 29, 35 and 61-years-old were acting suspiciously in the carpark of a West Ryde business.

The pistol was found after a search of the area and a police investigation linked it to the 35-year-old suspect.

Plenty at stake in A-League Sydney derby

Rinky Hijikata has broken into the world’s top 120 in the latest ATP Tour men’s singles rankings.

Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Marko Rudan has put Saturday night’s Sydney derby at CommBank Stadium (kick off 7.45pm) into perspective.

“It’s not just another game,” Rudan said.

“It’s a big game for our club.”

A resurgent Sydney FC will be travelling after consecutive wins (a season-first), to face a Wanderers side buoyed by a win over the reigning champions.

He proved unstoppable at last week’s Burnie International, claiming his second career ATP Challenger singles title without dropping a set.

This propels Hijikata up 30 spots to world No.119 and into seventh position in the Australian top 10.

Hijikata claimed the men’s singles title without losing a set, completing his perfect week with a 6-3 6-3 victory against top seed James Duckworth in the final.

This is the 21-year-old’s second career ATP Challenger singles title.

Hijikata, who won the Australian Open men’s doubles title last month in partnership with Jason Kubler, was previously ranked at a career-high world No.149, broke into the top 120 after his performance this week.
