Ryde Lions helping our Country Cousins

CITY of Ryde Lions Club recently sent a small delegation of Lions members on a mission to ascertain if they could assist the Lions Club of Ardlethan - a small country town with only 350 residents, west of West Wyalong. Lions Ernie Kidd, Robert McElroy and Judy Harris together with their spouses were chosen for this important task. With only eight Ardlethan Lions members coping with the drought, businesses struggling and families finding it hard to make ends meet, they were finding fund raising rather difficult. Ryde Lions presented a cheque for $1,000 towards the town’s celebration of Christmas with FREE soft drinks, lollies and sausage sandwiches for families. Letters to the Editor Dog running and barking petition Dear Sir, With reference to last week’s article headed “Marsfield resident wants politicians to scrap residential barking dog fines”. My Petition is headed “Let Dogs Run & Bark Behind a Fence without it being classed as an “attack””. It’s not about barking – it’s more like what constitutes an “attack”. I appreciate the TWT inserting most of the words on the Companion Acts Petition in last week’s issue. Someone at TWT added their own slant to the petition, which makes the purpose of the Petition most misleading. Firstly, the photo used by TWT is of a dog looking quite aggressive (though obviously not in a position to attack anyone on the other side of the fence). This Petition is more about dogs barking – not growling or showing their teeth, just running and barking on the other side of the fence – especially at an approved by Council, fenced, offleash area. The author of the article makes mention of children and cats. Children should be accompanied by an adult who can explain the difference between a barking dog and one that growls, cats shouldn’t be wondering the streets, so the comment doesn’t apply. There are dogs who like to greet anyone on the other side of the fence, by running and barking towards the fence. There are people who don’t understand dogs’ body language. Then there are people who think it’s wonderful that a dog has run to greet them. The majority of dog owners who are aware of the situation feel this is very unfair especially as the purpose of

fenced off leash areas is to allow dogs to run, bark and play. It should never be called an “attack” if a dog cannot make contact with anyone on the other side. Ryde Council and the other State Councils are all supporting the Petition, as we hope many others will - we need 10,000 signatures. If you would like to help obtain more signatures please send email to crow.jill@gmail.com JILL CROW Marsfield

Thank Liberals for Council surplus? Dear Sir, So Labor delivers a budget surplus in City Of Ryde (TWT 27/11/19). We should all thank Jerome Laxale and his ALP team for jacking up our rates by seven percent for that year but that’s only part of the story. A big chunk of the surplus came from developer contributions and who gets the credit for that? As the Mayor Ryde often argues, Council is not responsible for approving the big developments around Ryde but blames the state government. On that basis perhaps the heading should read “Liberal State Government delivers budget surplus to City of Ryde”? FRANK RAYNER Boronia Park

who, alongside my Liberal colleagues, unanimously voted to support my motion to assist farmers and regional communities suffering from the devastating drought. I particularly want to thank the Country Women’s Association for the amazing work they have done organising the 2019 Drought Aid Grants. These grants will make sure Council’s generous $20,000 donation gets to those that need it most. We should also acknowledge Clr Dr Peter Kim for moving a similar motion to kick-start a fundraising campaign for those affected by the recent bush-fires. It shows that good initiatives can transcend politics. Whilst Christmas is a happy time for most, it can be a challenge for those facing hardship. Blueprint outlines economic future Dear Sir, The Property Council of Australia welcomes the NSW 2040 Economic Blueprint released today by Treasurer Perrottet and supports his aspiration of providing a clear pathway for strong, productive economic growth across our State aimed at keeping NSW number one. The Blueprint outlines the need for short term reforms to the planning system, regulation and taxation to support longer term reforms in areas such as education and industry growth and development. The NSW economy is predicted to grow from $630 billion to be worth around $1 trillion by 2030 and $2 trillion by 2040. The Blueprint balances critical shortterm reform with longer term priorities that will boost our State’s competitiveness. It complements and frames the important

work already underway through the NSW Productivity Commission and David Thodey’s report into State/Federal financial relations. It includes plans to leverage growth in the Asia Pacific, plays to our State’s strengths and underlines the need to support emerging industries that will provide future employment growth, particularly in growing areas in Western Sydney. The Blueprint underlines the need for short term microeconomic reforms to the planning system. We agree with the statements included in the Blueprint which describe the NSW planning system as ‘complex’ and ‘inflexible’ and an issue in need of attention. Now is the time to draw together the streams of work to create a better planning system which can deliver the Sydney of tomorrow; we have a great opportunity to enact reforms now that will set the State up for the next 20 – 30 years. We congratulate Treasurer Perrottet and Chief Economist Stephen Walters on the release of the Blueprint and look forward to contributing to further work to put NSW in the best possible economic position in the future. JANE FITZGERALD Executive Director Property Council NSW

Hunters Hill Guest Column 150 year milestone for historic Public School

HUNTERS HILL Public School at 17 Alexandra Street Hunters Hill is celebrating 150 years in 2020.

Established in 1870, it is one of the oldest schools in New South Wales. Our school has a rich history of providing quality education. In the beginning, William Wright bought land in Hunters Hill from Ambrose Foss in the Mount St area. Wright donated land for Hunters Hill Public School and the original buildings, built by residents from local stone were a gift from the community. The sandstone building at the front of the school in Alexandra Street is an excellent example of a Gothic-Style schoolhouse of the Victorian period that was designed by the architect G A Mansfield. In 1875 Wright further subdivided his land bounded by Mount Street, Alexandra Street and Stanley Road. * * * THE subdivision was developed with houses, notably the fine stone house Eulbertie. Located next door to the school in spacious

with BRAD NEWHOUSE grounds, Eulbertie was built in 1878 and later purchased from the Marshall Family in 1965 by the Department of Education due to a rapid increase in enrolments. It is now a uniquely stunning dual classroom building adding to the beauty and character that is, Hunters Hill Public School. Hunters Hill Public School is unique. Our community is proud of the school that is steeped in history and tradition, having served to educate generations of children from Hunters Hill, Woolwich and surrounding areas. * * * ‘WHERE waters meet and jacarandas bloom’ is the first line of the school song penned by Pam Coleman and refers to the special location of our school. At Hunters Hill Public School, history and nature are in abundance from the grandeur of the sandstone buildings and the heritage listed

Moreton bay fig trees to the panoramic harbour views. Preparations are underway in conjunction with the school’s P&C to celebrate this momentous occasion. In 2020, the school and the community look forward to celebrating 150 years of public education, defined by our school’s motto ‘Amity’ and our aim of providing excellence in learning for success in life. * * * THE school is currently collecting any memorabilia for the Sesqui Centenary celebrations that any readers may have and this of course can be on loan. Memorabilia items can be dropped off to 7 Wybalena Road Hunters Hill or 3/8 The Close Hunters Hill or can be picked up locally. Mayoral Christmas Party blasted as an elite event

THE Mayoral Christmas Party has been blasted as an elitist event and the money spent on it should be donated to the Country Women’s Association, Clr Ben Collins said. The traditional $4000 party is an invitation only event with the money spent on catering. “This is elitism at its best,” Clr Collins said. “If we ask the community if they want to spend the money on the mayor and his chosen ones or spend it buying Christmas presents for kids in drought stricken areas I know what the community will say.” He said Hunters Hill already holds a function to thank community volunteers but Mayor Mark Bennett said the Christmas Party extends beyond volunteer recognition. “This event will thank people who do not fall into a volunteer category but who do much for Hunters Hill, including our police and other emergency service workers,” he said. Councillor Collins motion to scrap the event and send the money to the country was defeated by four votes to two. **** CHILD SAFETY will be the sole focus of a new committee established by Hunters Hill Council. The new committee aims to work closely with schools, P&C groups and

other services to improve road safety. A motion was introduced by Clr Ben Collins in response to frustration from Hunters Hill High School P&C members who recently fought for and won an upgrade to a footpath outside the school. “The only reason we got a footpath at Reiby Road was because the P&C fought for it and The Weekly Times campaigned for it,” Clr Collins said. “We either do this (committee) as a council or I will just wing it and do it myself.” **** DESPITE A REPUTATION for being one of the biggest water wasting municipalities in the state, Hunters Hill Council has rejected a motion to promote further water rationing. Recent media articles have blasted Hunters Hill’s water wastage and the motion by the two Liberal councillors responds to this criticism. “I do not want to make blaming statements about our residents,” Clr Ben Collins said. “Obviously there are large homes in Hunters Hill that consume more water but we do consume much

higher than the state average.” The issue is a sensitive one in Hunters Hill where many heritage homes homes have extensive and often award winning landscaped gardens that require more water than an average home uses. Councillor Elizabeth Krassoi said Hunters Hill Council is nonetheless setting an example through rain water harvesting and other water conservation initiatives. **** A LEGAL OPINION is being sought on a motion that would require Hunters Hill Council to adopt a policy that requires all child services which use council owned property to excluded children who are not immunised. The exclusion motion was put by Liberal councillors Zac Miles and Ben Collins who argue that non-vaccinated children put other children at risk. Councillor Ross Williams described such a policy as “unworkable” because parents (and services) have a right to refuse to share private information with the council and Clr Jim Sanderson said an exclusion clause could even

breach an Anti-Discrimination Act. Councillor Collins rubbished this suggestion. “I have no problem discriminating against parents who do not vaccinate their kids, they are complete dopes,” he said. “Anti vaccination groups are not welcome here.” **** PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN in Hunters Hill will be encouraged to walk to school in large groups. Monday night’s council meeting endorsed the concept of a pilot “walking school bus” where groups of parents and children stop to pick up others to make the group larger. It is hoped that this safety-in-numbers approach will increase visibility, alert drivers, reduce road accidents and promote friendship and cooperation. Councillor Elizabeth Krassoi said encouraging more children to walk to school, more often, will also reduce pollution from car emissions. “This is especially important with concerns about global warming,” she said.. It is hoped a local school will adopt this pilot project in partnership with the council

Rotary clubs help local horse riding charity

Wednesday 4 December, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7

ROTARY Clubs of Macquarie Park and North Ryde have raised $10,000 for a new mounting platform for Marsfield’s Riding For The Disabled charity. The money honours a two year old commitment from the clubs to assist the charity, which has experienced a hike in the cost of food for the horses due to the drought. Rotary Club of Macquarie Park President Lydia Scuglia said Rotary is proud to make a positive difference to the lives of the people with a disability. “We needed to raise over $10,000 towards the mounting platform to assist with the disabled children having easier access to get on the horse ,without injuring the rider or volunteer staff,” she said. “The new platform now allows the riders to mount the horse in a safe and comfortable manner.” The money was raised from trivia nights, end of year celebrations and other events.

“On Tuesday morning the official unveiling ceremony of the mounting platform was well attended by members from both the Macquarie Park and North Ryde Rotary Clubs.” “This project was commemorated with the cutting of the ribbon by Riding For The Disabled President Helen Strasser and Immediate Past President from Rotary Club of Macquarie Park Trina Phillips and the incoming President from North Ryde Rotary Club Mandy Van.

“Our special thanks go to Warren Smith from RDA for all his help and assistance.” In other news, Rotary is supporting drought stricken farmers. “Our busy little Rotarians at Macquarie Park have raised $998 in support of the NSW Rural Farmers at this

year’s Granny Smith Festival in Eastwood,” Ms Scuglia said. “As President I am so proud of our achievements and my thanks also go to Helloworld Travel Top Ryde City for donating the use

of the stand at the festival and also Allegiance Homeloans for donating the amazing hamper arranged by Len Gallo.” Rotary Club of Macquarie Park President Lydia Scuglia

Clashes and eviction at a Council meeting 10 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 4 December, 2019

A RESIDENT was evicted and an altercation broke out between supporters and opponents of the City of Ryde’s proposed heritage policy during last Tuesday night’s council meeting. The meeting was held in the Civic Hall to allow for a record number of pro and anti heritage policy supporters and saw an anti-policy supporter evicted by security guards for illegally filming the proceedings, despite repeated warnings by Mayor Jerome Laxale. The evicted resident told The Weekly Times he felt his eviction was hypocritical because the Mayor had not evicted residents who had earlier come to blows over an anti-policy banner. It is not the first time violence has broken out at a council meeting over the issue which has previously seen police called over threats made by an anti-policy supporter against the Mayor and staff as well as an alleged assault on Clr Edwina Clifton. Despite council meeting guidelines that limit speakers for and against an issue to ten per meeting, anti-policy supporters were able to get around this on Tuesday night by registering bogus submissions to speak on issues officially regis-

tered under subjects as diverse as drought relief, traffic management and council finances. Liberal Clr Trenton Brown told The Weekly Times that Mayor Laxale had the power to rule these speakers out of order “but did not do so” . The Mayor said Clr Brown could have raised a point of order. “My role as mayor is to rule on a point of order and no point of order was raised,” he said. Mayor Laxale said that all the speakers were permitted to address the meeting on the issue because councillors voted to allow them to speak, although Clr Edwina Clifton, Clr Christopher Gordon and Clr Bernard Purcell abstained on the vote. He said he is not going to be put in a position where he is accused by his political opponents of being undemocratic. Residents Gung Zhi, Wei Wei Wang, Guanjing Ruan, Silvestro Lauria and Pei Cheng were among dozens of anti-heritage policy supporters who derided the proposed

policy as “a joke”, “an embarrassment” and “political stupidity” as well as an attempt to tell home owners what they can and cannot do with what they own and have “a legal right” to sell or redevelop. “The fact that so many people are here demonstrates how strongly people feel, Mr Mayor, do not give us a black Christmas! ” anti-policy speaker Faye Lin said. Residents representing neighbourhoods in Denistone spoke in support of the proposed policy with pro-heritage policy supporter Paul Margereson telling the meeting that more people from his side would have spoken but they wanted to “follow the rules” and respect the ten speaker per item guideline. “I feel bullied but I will not be silenced,” pro-policy speaker Elish James told the meeting. “Above the rude noise in the public gallery tonight is a silent majority who understand that this (policy) protects whole precincts and neighbourhoods.”

One councillor may decide the fate of heritage homes THE CRUCIAL VOTE of one councillor could decide the fate of the most controversial policy to have ever come before the City of Ryde Council. With the council apparantly deadlocked over the proposed heritage listing policy, Liberal Clr Trenton Brown has until the December 10 coun cil meeting to decide whether he will break ranks with his own party and vote for the policy as proposed by Mayor Jerome Laxale and his Labor team and backed by conservative voters in heritage dominated streets in Eastwood and Denistone. Labor Clr Dr Peter Kim has broken ranks with his own party and has spoken against the policy alongside Independent Clr Simon Zhou. Should councillors vote in support of position’s they’ve adopted a previouis council meetings, Clr Brown’s vote with the casting vote of Mayor Laxale could decide the issue. “And it could decide the issue once and for all because I will not subject staff to the kind of abuse they have received on this issue ever again,” Mayor Laxale said. “We’ve already lost 20 per cent of our heritage homes to property developers and if councillors want to do something to save heritage homes and protect communities from inappropriate development they will have this one chance to do it and only this one chance.” Trenton Brown has a strong, personal love of heritage homes and Significantly he did not join Clr Kim, Clr Zhou and Clr Jordan Lane (Lib) to stand and applaud anti-policy speakers at last Tuesday night’s council meeting. He even copped criticism from anti-policy supporter Qian Wang for not responding to

her emails. “These anti-policy supporters have created a tsunami of emails,” Clr Brown said. “These people do not understand the policy and when you do not understand something you have fear.” Councillor Brown is also sceptical about claims from both sides that they represent the silent majority of ratepayers and he backed research by this newspaper which has found some of the so called “statistical surveys” by anti-policy supporters to be way off the mark. “I think the case is that most residents do not know about the policy or what it is trying to achieve.” What he will concede is that the council has inherited “a poisoned chalice” from the regimes of former Mayors Artin Etmekdjian and Colonel Bill Pickering who were strongly opposed to a council role in heritage home protection. Letters to ratepayers in 2010 told them their homes would never be heritage listed. “I do not support what Bill Pickering did, these letters have no currency

in my mind, none at all.” Mayor Laxale has even gone as far as to question whether or not these letters are legal. “They are certainly open for challenge in the Land and Environment Court,” the Mayor said. One possible outcome is that Clr Brown will vote against the line taken by the Liberal team and support the heritage policy, albeit with his own amendments. He revealed to The Weekly Times that he is studying similar policies in other council areas, particularly neighbouring Hunters Hill. The problem he faces is that both sides of the issue have made the debate a moral and ethical one. Anti-policy supporters say they a defending “the rights” of home owner to have the sole and only say on a home they own. If that means getting a good price for selling a heritage home to a cashed up property developer to knock down, then so be it. “This (proposed) heritage policy is violating home owners’ rights. Heritage is just crap hit-

ting the fan,” resident Jian Wang told Tuesday night’s council meeting. Pro-heritage supporters argue that the destruction of heritage homes in heritage streets lowers the price on heritage homes in the entire street and will destroy the character of a heritage suburb. They say most property speculators do not live in the area and regard heritage homes as no more than plastic pieces on a Monopoly board. It maybe these words of one Denistone resident that will ultimately influence Clr Brown’s vote. “I have very happy memories here of the connections I made here and how my children have found a home in this safe, friendly and beautiful neighbourhood,” Janelle Ingham told the council meeting. “We don’t look at our home as how much money we could make from it in five years time because this is our community and you can’t put a price on that. “Yet we are seeing an erosion of community and we are protecting our community.”

CHRISTMAS DINNER 6.30PM TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17 CHRISTMAS CAROLS | HELP FOR THOSE IN NEED

AS CHRISTIANS will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Eve, Ryde’s Persian community will celebrate an ancient “Night Of Birth” festival known as Shabe Yalda. Shabe Yalda is traditionally an evening of festivities and merriment that begins when the sun sets on Christmas Eve. Bihar Persian Supermarket Top Ryde owner Russell Sajadi said this ancient Zoroastrian festival has many similarities with Christmas. “There are many metaphors and symbols that we share in common but one tradition I particularly like is the one about the Christmas tree,” he said. “This tree is a significant symbol in the Zoroastrian faith and instead

of coloured balls we decorate the tree with red pomegranates.” “The Christian tradition of lighting candles is also reflected in Shabe Yalda, because these candles represent fire, one of the four sacred elements.” Shabe Yalda literally means The Rebirth Of The Sun and the ancient Persians built fires at sunset and kept them burning until the first rays of sunshine the following day. During this fire lit night night they gather with family and friends, eat delicious food, drink,

listen to poems and sing carols by candlelight. As well as in Iran, Shabe Yalda is celebrated by Persian communities in Armenia where they drink tea and eat “sharbat” which are sweet drinks made by mixing homemade fruit syrup and water. “The main Shabe Yalda fruits are watermelon, pomegranate, persimmons, apples and pears,” our TWT Persian Christmas Princess Gandom Raad said. “My special favourite is the watermelon.” The ancient myth is

that eating watermelon (hendevaneh) on Shabe Yalda night makes the person immune to cold winter weather. In some parts of Iran the family of a groom to be sends a well decorated watermelon along with different fresh and dried fruits as well as presents to the home of his future bride. Nuts (ajil) and dried fruit (khoshkbar) are also eaten on Shabe Yalda night. “There is a saying in Farsi that I wish you a long, warm and happy life, like Shabe Yalda.” Shabe Yalda Mobarak!

Parramatta News and Views Parramatta’s Darcy Street reopens to pedestrians and vehicles DARCY Street in Parramatta’s CBD will be reopened to pedestrians and vehicles this week as work progresses on the Parramatta Square precinct. “The reopening of Darcy Street is another step in the development of Parramatta Square, as major improvements continue to take place around the CBD,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said. “For drivers, Darcy Street will run one way from east along Smith Street to west along Church Street,” he said. “Pedestrians can exit Parramatta Station via the Darcy Street exit, and the exit to the Argyle Street Bus Interchange will be reopened during morning peak periods.” Pedestrians will soon be able to access Parramatta Square and the adjoining public space from Parramatta Station via a new underground link. “This new underground walkway will make it quicker and safer for people to move to and from the train station. It will also enable the first tenants of 4 Parramatta Square to more easily access their place of work,” he said. Parramatta Square, a three-hectare mixeduse precinct, and the 6,000sqm public domain will play an important role in improving access to the rest of the Parramatta CBD and its surrounds, including the Parramatta River, Riverside Theatres, Bankwest Stadium, future Powerhouse Precinct and much more. There will be other changes in the CBD that will affect pedestrian and vehicle movements. From 10pm, Friday 29 November, George Street will become two-way to ensure efficient traffic flow during the construction and operation of Parramatta Light Rail. Pedestrians are advised to take particular care when crossing George Street and look out for traffic travelling in both directions. From Friday 29 No-

vember, the speed limit of a number of streets in the Parramatta CBD, North Parramatta, Harris Park and Westmead will be reduced to 40km/h for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. For more information, please visit cityofparramatta.nsw. gov.au/safespeedlimits *** IN OTHER NEWS major works are underway on Rydalmere Park’s multi-million dollar makeover, including a state-ofthe-art synthetic grass field. Lord Mayor Dwyer joined members of the Rydalmere Football Club to celebrate the start of a series of upgrades to the 6.4 hectare park and associated facilities. “The projects outlined in the Rydalmere Park Masterplan, which was developed following extensive community consultation, will turn this significant asset into a space that meets the community’s changing recreational needs,” he said. “Community spaces and sporting facilities such as those at Rydalmere Park provide a valuable opportunity for people to connect with their neighbours, stay active and enjoy nature right on their very own doorstep.“ Among the improvements to the park is a $2.5 million upgrade to the northern playing field, jointly funded by the NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund and City of Parramatta Council. This field will receive a new synthetic grass playing surface, fencing and lighting to meet Football NSW National Premier League requirements. A The two southern turf playing fields will also be upgraded. Other works to the

park will include the development of the former bowling club site for multipurpose use; increased vegetation, shade, shelter and seating; upgrades to recreational spaces such as the playground, multipurpose court and circuit path; and maintenance of existing amenities buildings. Parramatta MP Geoff Lee said he is excited by the new works. “The $5 million commitment to upgrade Rydalmere Park is a great example of the NSW Government investing in local sporting facilities,” he said. Rydalmere Football Club president Peter Bacha thanked City of Parramatta Council and the State Government for making the long-awaited upgrade a reality. “The upgrade to these facilities will allow us to compete locally at the highest levels of the National Premier League competition and provide even more footballing opportunities for local kids,” he said. As Parramatta’s population grows, synthetic pitches will become an increasingly important part of the mix in providing the local community with sporting and recreational opportunities. Synthetic fields provide a consistent, durable and safe playing surface that can be used seven days a week all year round – providing more capacity to accommodate increasing demands. Synthetic turf also requires less water than natural grass and addresses the issue of poor grass growing conditions due to hot, dry weather. Rydalmere Park’s new synthetic grass field is scheduled for completion in February 2020.

Parramatta Square will be at the heart of a new development.

Ryde River Walk link to go ahead

A CONTROVERSIAL stretch of the proposed Ryde River Walk in Tennyson Point was approved by councillors at a confidential session of last Tuesday night’s meeting.

Councillors approved construction of the 150 metre link between Bill Mitchell Park and Ross Street at Glades Bay in Tennyson Point as part of a wider 12 kilometre Parramatta River foreshore walk from the Gladesville Bride to the Ryde Bridge. It will replace a detour that currently diverts the Walk from the foreshore and requires walkers to go up a steep stairway and onto local streets. Some waterfront residents have expressed concern about sec-

tions of the River Walk which they say breach of their current, lawful private access to the foreshore. Liberal Clr Trenton Brown recently spoke against the approved link which he said was driven by a socialist ideology that had scant regard for private property. City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale described the approval as a big win for the entire community. “The Parramatta River belongs to everybody,” he said. “ By completing the

missing link of the Ryde River Walk, we are opening up our jewel to everyone. “The Ryde River Walk is one of Sydney’s great waterfront walks and building this missing link will not only improve this fantastic outdoor space it will ensure the entire community can access this picturesque part of the Parramatta River.” The final design for the so-called “missing link” is expected to ensure none of the public walk will be built on private land and will be funded as part

Ryde River Walk supporters Mayor Jerome Laxale and Clr Penny Pedersen are pictured at the site of the recently approved public access section of the Walk. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO of Council’s Passive Parks Capital Works Program. Mayor Laxale said it will help to preserve

the ecological importance of the area as well as maintaining suitable access to the river for residents and

boating enthusiasts. Council has also resolved that a report be prepared for Council on completing an

additional link of the Ryde River Walk located between Putney Park and Kissing Point Park.

Why this photo should be a wake up call for Lane Cove THIS photograph of an overturned trailer shows the hazards that face pedestrians on River Road in Greenwich, says Lane Cove’s road safety advocate Don Murchison.

REGISTRATION OF INTEREST Ryde Riverwalk – Bill Mitchell Park to Glades Bay Park, Gladesville, NSW NSW National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974 & Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 City of Ryde is proposing to construct a new section of fibre-mesh boardwalk along the foreshore of Parramatta River between Ross Street Road Reserve and Bill Mitchell Park in Gladesville. The activity may impact upon Aboriginal objects that are protected under the National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974. An assessment of the potential archaeological and cultural heritage impacts of the proposal is to be prepared by Council in accordance with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents (DECCW 2010). Individuals and groups who may hold cultural knowledge relevant to establishing the significance of potential Aboriginal objects in the area are invited to register their interest to participate in the consultation and assessment process for the proposal. How do I register my interest? Registrations of interest can be sent via post or email to: Post Clare McLay Senior Project Manager City of Ryde c/Dominic Steele Consulting Archaeology 21 Macgregor Street Croydon NSW 2132 Email dsca@bipond.net.au Registrations of interest must be sent to the details listed above and close Wednesday 15 January 2020. The consultation and assessment period closes Friday 31 January 2020. Customer Service Centre: 1 Pope Street, Ryde Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: cityofryde@ryde.nsw.gov.au

“On Wednesday a trailer demolished most of this fence landing on the footpath,” Mr Murchison said. “Had this happened an hour later there would have undoubtedly been multiple fatalities. “The latest accident on River Road raises serious safety concerns for school children, pedestrians and cyclists.” He said that in March a car careered off the road, across the footpath 200 metres from this same location, landing in bushland. “It narrowly missed demolishing a bus shelter and pedestrians. “These near misses are a wake up call and the Community Association implore Council to widen the narrow River Road cliff section of footpath, thereby providing a safe route from Greenwich Road to the golf course.” He has also called for a protective barrier fence at the site. “In doing so it is imperative that protective barrier fencing is installed along the entire stretch from the school to the golf course, to safeguard against further accidents from speeding downhill motorists,” he said. “When the footpath along River Road was widened to a shared user pathway several years ago under a school safety initiative a tiny fence was placed directly in front of the school entrance.”

CHRISTIAN Community Aid’s Aged Care Services is having a positive impact on the elderly in our community. Mr Smith of Eastwood, a recipient of CCA services recently contacted the organisation expressing his gratitude and highlighting the positive impact it has had on his life. “To all the staff at CCA, I would like to say a big thank you for looking after me. I am 96 years old and currently receive CCA Meals on Wheels. “When I lost my wife over ten years ago I also lost my desire to cook or to eat. My doctor was concerned about my condition and recommended CCA meals on wheels.

Being a very independent man I started meals on wheels with trepidation. Today I have to say CCA meals on wheels has been a great help and support to me and enabled me to stay in my much loved home of 55 years! It has had a positive impact on my physical and emotional wellbeing, and given me the energy to potter around my home which I love dearly. CCA makes it possible for me to choose my meals, which days I want them and also whether I can have them hot, chilled or frozen. This keeps my brain active and I look forward to eating the meal of my choice. The quality of the meals and desserts is

remarkable. I have come to enjoy the social interaction with the volunteers who deliver the meals every day. They bring the outside world to me. Over the years I have been able to get very affordable transport for all my medical appointments and more recently CCA has organised linen delivery for me as I find it a challenge to change the bed linen. CCA does all these services with a minimum of fuss and a lot of kindness and respect. Once again, I thank you CCA for your assistance and support and the volunteers who have given up their time to bring a meal to me every day”.

LOCAL hero and Sydney FC captain Alex Wilkinson was last week recognised by City of Ryde with a Certificate of Appreciation as his club extended his contract for another year. A two-time A-League Championship and Premiership winner with the Sky Blues, Alex is set to enter the list of top 10 appearance makers at the club with this new deal, having currently played 112 games across all com-

petitions. “I’m thrilled to be re-signing with a club that has given me so much over the last four years,” Alex said. “I’ve enjoyed some of my best football at Sydney FC and I’m eager for that to continue along with all the

success we’ve had. “This squad is a pleasure to Captain and it’s always an honour to pull on the Sky Blue shirt and represent my home city.” The City of Ryde presented the 16-capped Socceroo with a Certificate

of Appreciation, signed by all councillors, at an extraordinary meeting of Council at Ryde Civic Hall last week. Councillor Roy Maggio, who moved to have Alex recognised, said he was an inspiring local sports

Sydney FC skipper Alex Wilkinson has signed a one year contract extension with the reigning A League champions. figure. “Alex has reached the highest level by representing his country playing football and his outstanding achievements have had a tremendous influence on local football players of all ages,” Clr Maggio said. Alex, who grew up in the City of Ryde where he was a student at Ryde East Public School and Epping Boys High School, primarily played junior football for North Ryde Soccer Club, before embarking on a senior career at Northern Spirit and Ryde City Gunners. When the A-League national football competition was formed in 2005, Alex was signed by the Central Coast Mariners where he played 172 games before relocating to South Korea to play for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He later returning to Australia, Mr Wilkinson played

10 games for Melbourne United before returning home to sign for Sydney FC in 2016. After serving as Sydney FC’s vicecaptain for three seasons, Mr Wilkinson became the club’s eighth official captain at the start of the current A-League season. Mr Wilkinson has also made 11 appearances for the Australian national team, including all three games Australia played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. “Alex Wilkinson is a City of Ryde legend who started his career playing in our local competitions before going on to represent club and country. This Certificate of Appreciation is our way of acknowledging all he has done in his professional career and for the City of Ryde,” City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale, said. Wilkinson’s re-signing ensures the Sky Blues ensure ’ most effective cen-

tral defensive partnership remains intact, with Ryan McGowan also contracted for the 2020/21 season. Coach Steve Corica welcomed Wilkinson’s resigning and said the stability it provides was a huge bonus for the new season ahead. “To have our central defensive pairing locked in for season 2020/21 is a massive win and a real positive for the club,” Corica said. “Alex has been an exceptional leader and his experience has proven invaluable across all levels at Sydney FC. “I’m looking forward to having Alex as a part of our squad again next season and congratulate him on his efforts to date.” Sydney FC’s next home game is this Saturday night against Brisbane Roar at Kogarah Jubilee Oval.

Lane Cove educator ‘Top of the Tots’

Wednesday 4 December, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 23

IF YOUR children are being educated by Neerja Mehta they are in good hands. The Greenwood Lane Cove early childhood educator was recently announced as a regional finalist in G8 Education’s 2019 Standout Educator Awards program. Selected from 11,000 educators across the country, Neerja was nominated by her parents and peers for her outstanding contribution to the wellbeing and healthy development of the children in her care. Greenwood Lane Cove Centre Manager Sela Atiola said the recognition was testament to Neerja’s dedication to providing superior learning and development outcomes for local children. “The Standout Educator Awards highlight the special contribution educators like Neerja make to the lives of the children attending our centre,” she said. “To be selected is not only reward for her dedication to going above and beyond each and every day but it also emphasises the special bond that she has with the children.” Now in its third year, G8 Education’s Standout Educator Awards program provides recognition for the important role early childhood

educators play in the lives of families across the country. More than 10,000 nominations were received this year, with parent and peer nominations highlighting everything from teaching techniques through to their personal attributes and willingness to go above and beyond to support both the children and their families. One parent said of Neerja: “She always goes above and beyond her professional role to support the children in her room. One of the occasions was when my child was adjusting to an addition of new baby in our family. “The love, care and attention provided to her and the feedback I received about my child was very valuable in helping the transition.” Neerja now goes in the running to be named one of six national finalists. Winners will be announced on Early Childhood Educator’s Day on Wednesday 4 September, when early learning services across the country celebrate the important role educators play in supporting the learning and development of Australia’s children. The National Winner

will be announced at the G8 Education 2020 Centre Manager Conference early next year. *** G8 Education opened its Greenwood Hunters Hill child care and early learning centre at 22A Joubert Stree in February this year. The modern facility is ideally located for families in Hunters Hill, Woolwich, Linley Point, Gladesville, Lane Cove, Ryde and Putney. Children enjoy play-based learning experiences in our spacious and natural outdoor environments set in a peaceful residential area. There’s so much to discover and explore in our cubby house, play bridge, water play area and sandpits. “We understand how busy life can be for modern families, so we offer an allinclusive childcare and early education experience,” G8 Education said in a statement. “From nappies to nutritious meals prepared daily by our in-house cook, everything is included in the daily fee. “We also provide the latest interactive learning technology and a range of engaging extracurricular activities to

Students to clean up Boronia Park

TAFE students will remove dead wood and other debris from Boronia Park in Hunters Hill this month.

The dead wood removal is part of a partnership between Hunter’s Hill Council and TAFE NSW to utilise Boronia Park as a site to train students studying Arboriculture. Council has notified residents of the upcoming maintenance work and has advised them the students will only be conducting maintenance work which involves the re-

moval of dead wood, not whole trees. The TAFE Arboriculture Program provides students a qualification with occupation outcomes within a range of specialised skills in the arboriculture industry. The partnership aims to provide students with practical experience in assessing trees under the direction of TAFE NSW and

Council’s Landscape Coordinator. It is hoped that the undertaking of groundbased tree work activities will help consolidate the skills the students need in order to create a pathway for further learning that is required for arborists. For enquiries contact Council’s Parks and Landscape Coordinator on 9879 9400.

Proud birthday milestone for centurion Ken

PUTNEY-Tennyson Bowling Club personality Ken Andrews celebrated his 100th birthday with fellow lawn bowlers and friends at a special luncheon in his honour last Friday.

Evergreen Ken - who took up lawn bowls at the age of 92 with Gladesville Sporties - is pictured centre with

event organisers and fellow bowlers Brian Prentice, Jock Cunningham, Andy Heyes, Rick Marrins and Betty Reynolds, Pat Brown and Marian Johnston (not in photo). Ken has experienced an interesting life. Born and raised in Bronte he played rugby for Eastern Suburbs; was an avid surfer and windsurfer;was a Commanding Officer of 75 Squadron RAAF; a pilot in New Guinea during

World War 2 and later served with one of two flying units with 78 Fighter Wing RAAF in Malta. Ken became one of the RAAF’s most experienced instructors and was a horse breaker along with his late wife Iona who also reached 100 years of age. Debonair Ken still snorkels; rides a pushbike; drives his own car and represents Putney-Tennyson in Pennant Bowls. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO

He was a talented rugby league player with Annandale in his heyday in the Balmain Junior League and a member of North Ryde RSL Community Club for the past 36 years. Gary is survived by his two sons Daryl and Stephen, sister Annette Van Acker and long time partner June Cooley. Full tribute later.

STALWARTS Sue Hardacre (left) and Elvy Craven took out the recent Gladesville Womens Bowling Club Unders and Overs competition - winning all three ends.

LAWN bowls stalwart Graham Hatch has achieved a first on the bowling green - winning a title at Denistone Sports Bowling Club with his grandson Sam Hatch-Caccamo. The pair are pictured right after an emphatic 2815 win over rookie lead Geoff Thomas and wily veteran skip Colin Piddick in the Club’s Major/Minor Pairs final. Young Sam demonstrated his class and composure as skip - complementing the guile shown by his grandfather Graham. Geoff, a six month new bowler, and Colin succumbed to the champion pair after an early charge.

Test cap for boom batsman Crawley By CHRIS KARAS

ZAK CRAWLEY - the Kent batsman who plundered over 700 runs for Sydney Cricket Club in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition last summer - has earned his Test spurs with the England cricket team. The talented 21 year old colt (pictured) was brought into the English side for the Second Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park Hamilton following an injury to wicket keeper-batsman Jos Buttler but could only muster one run on debut. Crawley, a stylish top order bat, posted 715 runs in 18 appearances for the Tigers during the club’s 2018-2019 finals charge at a healthy average of 65.00 with two centuries. He was part of Sydney’s First Grade Limited Overs Cup-winning squad and set a Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup record for the fastest century in the competition - cracking an unbeaten 100 off just 42 balls. In only his second full season for Kent this year, Crawley scored 820 runs at an average of 34.16 in the County Championship. Crawley’s stand out performances in domestic cricket earned him a place in the England Lions’ team for the four-day game against an Australia XI back in July. He was later named in England’s 15-man squad for the current New Zealand tour and went on to score a superb 103 in the Lions’ two-day warm-up fixture against a New Zealand XI in Whangarei. MEANWHILE Sydney first grade cricket team believe they can extend their winning streak in the NSW Premier Cricket series after restricting Sutherland to a first day tally of 9-299 at Drummoyne Oval last weekend. The Tigers’ batting unit have produced

Ryde Athletics’ champion Under 18 and Under 14 Boys long jump teams back l to r George Davis, Jett Tall, Sam Galati (absent Rory Davison) and front Patrick Faulkner, Jope Rauqe, Owen Chandler and Angelo Mihos.

State medal haul for promising batch of Ryde junior athletes

RYDE ATHLETICS Club jumpers have covered themselves in glory - bagging a swag of medals at the recent Athletics NSW State Relay Championships at Campbelltown Athletic Centre. consistent performances this summer led by top order mainstays Justin Mosca, Matthew Rodgers, Suffan Hassan, Ryan Felsch, Beau McClintock, Dan Smith and Middlesex recruit Nick Gubbins and will collectively look for big scores this Saturday. Gritty half centuries by Tom Doyle (71 runs off 110 balls) and an unbeaten 78 off 144 balls by number eight Dan Fallins helped shape the Sutherland innings, supported by Aiden Bariol (45). The Sharks were tottering at 6-144 before Fallins and Bariol added 86 runs for the seventh wicket. Pace warriors Nic Bills (2-63 off 25 overs) and Alex Glendenning (2-41 off 17 overs) were the pick of the Tigers’ attack. — first featuring for the NSW Under 18s and the Australian Schoolboys in 2014 before being selected in the National Youth Competition Team of the Year in 2016. The 23-year-old has since played 43 first-grade games for the Dragons across four years and enters the 2020 campaign off the back of a strong season that saw him post career highs in games, linebreaks, offloads, tackles and running metres. Coach Maguire said he was looking forward to working with Leilua and seeing his career further develop at the club. “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to secure a player with Luciano’s tal-

ent and potential for the future,” Maguire said. “He offers another dimension to our forward pack and gives us an added edge with his ballplaying and creativity. “With more experience and time, I can see Luciano developing into a really strong player for this club and we’re all excited to see him take those next steps in his career here.” Having represented Samoa during their strong World Rugby League Nines campaign and Oceania Cup Test match against Fiji last month, Leilua will return for the Tigers’ pre-season training alongside the club’s other senior players on Monday December 2.

The promising Ryde contingent showed their depth of talent when every long jump and high jump team won a medal each time they competed. Coming home as gold medallists and State title holders were Ryde’s Under 14s 4 x Long Jump team that comprised Jope Rauqe, Patrick Faulkner, Owen Chandler and Angelo Mihos - all managing personal best jumps in the competition. What was more extraordinary was that this was the first time that any of the boys had competed at an Athletics NSW event. Ryde’s experienced Under 18 Boys 4 x long jump team of Jett Tall, Sam Galati, George Davis and Rory Davison also achieved personal best jumps to claim the bronze

medal . It was a good omen for Rory who is off to the Australian All Schools Championships in Perth where he’ll compete in the Under 16 Triple Jump. Ryde’s Under 18 Girls 4 x long jump team had an average age of just 14 but that didn’t stop the girls collecting bronze in a very talented field with both Aliana Moala and Sophie Kavanagh leaping to 30cm personal best jumps. Adria McAndrew and Mia Marshall rounded out the Under 18 team with both also competing in the Under 14s 4 x long jump with Krishani Coffin and Georgia Phillips to bring home Ryde’s third long jump bronze of the weekend. In high jump Ryde’s Under 18 boys team picked up the silver medal with Brendan Mannasz lead-

ing the way with a big personal best jump of 1.75m. He was joined by brother Aidan, George Davis and Rory Davison. The Under 18 girls 4 x high jump were also impressive taking home the bronze medal with former Ryde Sports Foundation Encouragement Award winner Alyssa Lowe finishing overall second in the competition. Alyssa’s fellow jumpers were Georgia Arcus, Sophie Kavanagh, and 12 year old whiz Jessica Johnston. Jessica grabbed the chance to prove her other field strength in the U14s 4x shot put when she teamed up with Krishani Coffin, Aliana Moala and Amelia Boccabella to bring home another bronze for Ryde. Out on the track Ryde’s middle distance female

runners had a solid carnival with Georgia Arcus, Lily Tomlinson, Claudia Wilson and Arabella Price clinching the State title in the Under 20s 4 x 1500m. Arcus, Price and Wilson then teamed up with Amelie Sun the following morning to snare silver in the Under 20s 4 x 800m. In the Sprint Relays it was Ryde’s Under 14 Girls who shone again - bringing home silver in both the Under 14s 4 x 100m and U/14s 4 x 200m competitions. In both events the team featured Ruby Worrell, Mia Marshall, Krishani Coffin and Aliana Moala. The emerging Moala stamped herself an exciting prospect by picking up two silver and three bronze medals and displaying outstanding ability in jumps, throws and sprints.

Leilua links with Tigers WESTS TIGERS have boosted their stocks by securing the services of talented St George-Illawarra utility forward Luciano Leilua for the next three seasons.

The Samoan international will link with the Tigers immediately after being granted a release by the Dragons and shapes as a valuable acquisition to Head Coach Michael Maguire’s playing roster. Leilua has developed into a quality forward since making his first-grade debut for the Dragons three seasons ago. He starred at junior level
