THIS WEEK’S QUEST ENTRIES LUCY FANG, 17, of Marsfield lists her hobbies as music, reading, dancing, speech and drama, netball, tennis and she has competed at state and national levels in Fencing. Her interests are literature, arts, film/theatre, opera, public speaking and current affairs. Why I would like to be Granny Smith Festival Queen?

I was born and raised in the City of Ryde. To me, the Granny Smith Festival is one of the most significant annual celebrations in our area, enjoyed by all local residents and even the families from afar. Growing up, it was one of the highlights of the year I looked forward to. I always had so much fun spending the day running around, along with my family, tasting various international cuisines, enjoying carnival rides and face painting, playing games, watching various shows, you name it. I also paraded and performed solo and group dances at the Festival for a few years when I was attending a local dance school. Later when I became a Youth Councillor at Ryde Youth Council Committee, I volunteered to help out at the stalls on the day too. I feel that I have become a part of the celebration, and I will always cherish these wonderful memories. The City of Ryde is a very diverse community with over half of its residents born overseas (including my parents), and that is its strength. Granny Smith Festival is a great example which showcases the wonderful and harmonious diversity and multiculturalism in our area. I care for the place I grew up in and I always try to make my humble contribution when possible. I have been helping at the local Buddhist Charity Tzu Chi from time to time since I was little, we did cleaning up the streets, planting trees, fundraising for natural disaster-stricken regions, visiting nursing home, sewing environmentally friendly boomerang bags. After I joined PLC Pymble

JB’s World DAYLIGHT SAVING may be on the way out. There is a move in Europe to end the messing with the clocks, watches and time pieces as they say it has worn out its usefulness. And I certainly agree. The European Parliament has referred the matter to individual countries to come back for a united front so change seems almost certain to be on its way. Hooray! *** DAME MARIE BASHIR as Patron officially launched Rivendell Flower Show on

as a high school scholarship recipient, I have been enthusiastically involved in all aspects of my school life and contributing to my school communities. I have been a student leader, and apart from being involved in many community service activities, I also made a difference for my peers and my school by launching the two biggest student-led learning programs on campus, Young Entrepreneur Society (YES) and Pymble Model UN (PMUN). YES focuses on social entrepreneurship and helps equip girls with the must-have skills for the most unpredictable 21st century. And PMUN is a great platform for helping nurture girls into confident, resilient, and global thinking young women. But it is always on the back of my mind to do more for my community where I live. In 2017, I joined Ryde Youth Council Committee mainly because I wanted to get help for taking my initiative off the ground - the Reading Assistance Program (RAP). The idea originated from my participation in the Smith Family’s ReadingBuddy program organised by my school. I believe that to lead a quality life, it is vital for children to develop the habit of reading and become avid readers for life. I visited our local libraries and found out that primary student learning assistance was in high demand, especially with the increased number of immigrant families coming to live in Ryde, but a lack of adult volunteers made the service unsustainable. My initiative RAP is to get local high school students involved as volunteer mentors to assist our local primary students with reading. I see it is mutually beneficial for two age-groups: primary

and high school students so local schools and the council should support it. RAP encourages high school students to volunteer, get skilled, and become an avid reader themselves during the process. Just like the saying goes, ‘In helping others, we help ourselves.’ But the reality is more complex. The council can’t get involved, and neither can the libraries, citing that they have a lack of staff, and also the issue of age (minors) etc. (the unfortunate fact that the world is becoming less trusting…) Our Ryde community officer for young people, Andy, has been very supportive and even though we are not getting anywhere, we haven’t given up on it yet. Then while running YES, I came up with this entrepreneurial idea. Maybe I can set up a non-profit to provide young children with free access to reading assistance online, overcoming the hurdle of distance and under-age related issues as well? That way, children in the rural and remote areas can benefit from it too, including indigenous children! I was very excited about my idea and have been getting people with the same passion to do it with me. But we will definitely need some funding. So, the Granny Smith Festival Queen prize money will certainly be a good starting

point for my fundraising effort for the project RAP, that’s if I win. Apart from the reason above, I would like to be Granny Smith Festival Queen also because I believe I will be a wonderful ambassador and a role model for my local youth. I just read that there was a debate a few years ago to push for shutting down this pageant. To support that it is more about inner beauty, I will come to the judging session without any make-up, and I would encourage all contestants to do so if I could. I served as a Youth Ambassador for City of Ryde in 2018/2019, and currently I am a mentor for Ryde Youth Ambassador 2019/2020. I was one of the three winners of My First Speech Competition 2018 for my research on education equality. We were flown to Canberra in December and delivered our speeches at APH, met with MPs and the PM as well! I was also very fortunate to debate at Old Parliament House in August 2018, at the prominent MUNA National Finals (my team was the regional winner, beating Shore!). These enlightening and enriching experiences propelled me to think about how I can contribute more to my school community and communities at large. Since early this year, I’ve

LANA NGUYEN, 26, of North Parramatta lists her hobbies as VIEHMRK, bushwalking, cooking and her interests as Harry Potter, cats and psychology. Why I would like to be Granny Smith Festival Queen: I’m outgoing, happy, funny and would love the oppor-tunity to make people smile. And I do love Granny Smiths! volunteered at MP Mr John Alexander’s office, helping with tasks such as writing short speeches on celebrating Chinese New Year, raising issues about Macquarie Ice Rink closure. I also did countless hours of research for a speech about housing affordability for young Australians. I am also a Northern Sydney Youth Health Promotions Consultant, helping identify health issues among the local youth and promoting healthy lifestyle etc. Mental health has become the number one issue for Australian youth, since prevention is better than cure, I believe reading is definitely one of the most efficient ways to help prevent the issue at the root of its causes. I hope RAP program will be able to get off the ground in the near future so our children and youth can start to benefit from it, and they could well be this Quest’s sponsors’ family members or their neighbours’ and customers’ children. Therefore, the funds are well spent! Lastly, if I become Granny Smith Festival Queen, I’d love to help promote our local businesses, and raise awareness around sustainability if possible. Only when we work together as a community will our society become a better place for all. THIS WEEK’S QUEST ENTRIES

Letters to the Editor Aust must boycott Our earlier UN climate summit migrants were praiseworthy Dear Sir, The Australian federal government must boycott the UN Climate Summit in New York after the organisation barred Australian representatives from speaking despite Australia’s strong record in mitigating its emissions and investing in combating climate change. Australia is on track to halve its emissions per person between 2005 and 2030, and has poured billions into global and local funds to help other countries combat climate change in addition to nearly $5 billion a year in subsidies for renewable energy provided by state and federal governments. That these expensive commitments funded by taxes raised off hardworking Australian families and businesses have only gotten us snubbed by leaders and bureaucrats with a contempt for our vitally important coal industry, an industry whose exports assist Asian countries in lowering their emissions output by replacing more emissions-intensive local coal, shows that it’s time for them to be reconsidered. The United Nations must understand that it can no longer take Australian charity and goodwill for granted. I am writing as Director of Policy of the Australian Taxpayers Alliance representing our 75,000 plus members national grassroots advocacy body and the taxpayers of Australia. SATYA MARA Director of Policy Australian Taxpayers Alliance

Dear Sir, I don’t know how long D. Harrington (Letters 25/09/19) has been reading this esteemed publication, but I have written several letters praising our earlier migrants. The Greeks, the Italians, those from the former Yugoslav Republic, the Poles, Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, and those from the UK amongst others. These hard working men and women helped built this great country. They built roads, and bridges, they worked on the Snowy River scheme, helped complete our marvellous Opera House, farmed arid land and made it productive. They toiled hard in steelworks and glass factories, built houses and tall buildings. They, like my father did it without complaining or asking for handouts. These are the migrants I admire D. Harrington not some of the ones that we have let into our country in more recent years. The terrorism perpetrators, the drug importers devastating families who have suffered a loss, the drive by shooters, the Centrelink rorters, the tax and duty avoiders that love dealing in cash, the gangs who roam without fear, those cultivating drugs in suburban houses, the illegal migrants and Visa over stayers that are costing the Australian taxpayer a fortune to track down. So D. Harrington, even blind Freddie can see what parts of the world are over represented with the above mentioned. I dealt with some within these groups as a government officer. Lying, cheating, opportunistic, deceptive, sneaky

with no regard to Australian law or ethics. There were enough of them to worry me about the way our country is heading. And almost without exception in my case they were from the same two ethnic backgrounds. TONY IKONOMOU Hunters Hill

Renewable Energy, Sobering numbers Dear Sir, “RE” is a misnomer. Wind and solar generators and batteries are built from non-renewable materials and they wear out. Old equipment has to be decommissioned, creating millions of tons of waste, most of it is simply toxic waste. The International Renewable Energy Agency calculates that consistent with the year 2050 Paris Accord the number of old solar panels disposed by then and not just then will create double the tonnage of today’s plastic waste. And what’s so good about it? There will never be a solar panel, electrical battery or wind wheel tower that will produce more power over its lifetime in relation to the power used to make the panel originally. Consider some sobering numbers: The batteries of a single electric car weigh about 450 kg. To fabricate just these 450 kg requires digging up, moving and processing more than 250,000 kg of raw materials somewhere on this planet. Just image all the petrol used up in doing so.

For oil you extract onetenth as much to deliver the same number of vehicle miles as batteries over their seven-year life time. That physical reality is literally visible. Wind and solar farms stretching to the horizon requiring 450 times more area than an equivalent coal generator and the latter is available 24/7. No matter how big the wind farm, if the wind doesn’t blow, that’s it. And worse still, on the average power is generated only in 18 percent of the lifetime of the wind farm and it’s done intermittently. Given the amount of cement in wind wheel platforms, indeed more than 500 tonnes per 400 tonnes of steel and 45 tonnes of nonrecyclable material, mainly plastics, the CO₂ saving work starts from way behind. Worth noting also is that the manufacture of cement is one of the highest CO₂ emitting activities known. Add to it the 4,000C heat in the kilns sourced from fossil fuel generators, it means the more wind wheels you produce the more CO₂ you have already added to the atmosphere without being able to make it up. You don’t believe me? A reality check is Germany, a country further into this green stuff than any other. And what happened, CO₂ per person has increased as renewables were increasing as a percentage of total and the cost of electricity went up with it, being now the highest in the world. Please go and inform Greta of it. But do the Greens care about reality? The exotic materials being part of the manufacturing process such as indium, cobalt and lithium add up to a toxic mix, which Greta is pushing into the next generation to get rid of. The technology to recycle this stuff doesn’t exist, let alone a knowledge of the cost involved. Good stuff, let’s push it into the same future Greta is so scared of, but of course for the wrong reasons. EWIN MATIUK Sydney

Joy Mackeddie was elected our first President. This group of retired and semiretired women meet at the Hunters Hill Club in Madeline Street Hunters Hill on the fourth Monday of each month at 10am. Following a short meeting, we socialise over a morning tea break and then sit to listen to our invited guest speaker of the day. This month, local historian Dr Beverley Sherry, spoke of the history of stained

with CAROLE CLANCY-O’HEHIR glass in Australia. Her talk was supported with her collection of slides. Later this month we are having an “Opal Card” day where we will explore the new Metro North Line to Rouse Hill using our local Bus Route 506 to Macquarie Centre and stopping for lunch at Castle Hill. In October we are booked on a Sydney Heritage Tour aboard the “Harman”, an ex-RAN motor launch, to explore the headlands, bays and Harbour coves from Bradley’s Head to Ball’s Head. On our return to Pyrmont we will visit Yot’s Cafe for lunch. * * * THE AIMS of Probus are to advance intellectual and cultural interests, to provide opportunities for fellowship, the development of acquaintance and social interaction and it is a nonpolitical, non-

sectarian and a nonfund-raising body. A short meeting is first held to discuss any business matters and most importantly to provide information about forthcoming activities for our members. This is followed by morning tea and a time to chat with fellow members. Then a guest speaker is welcomed. This is the highlight of every meeting and topics are many and varied. * * * WITHIN OUR Club we have groups who play mah-jong, lawn bowls, tennis plus a film group. Women are always welcome to attend our meetings as a visitor. For further details you can contact myself on 9817-2754 or mobile 0422 234 318. Hunters Hill dumps Ryde Library for Lane Cove

Wednesday 2 October, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5

HUNTERS HILL Council has dumped a longstanding shared Library agreement with the City of Ryde to take up an offer from Lane Cove Council. Hunters Hill’s action has been criticised by by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale who described it as a bad deal for Hunters Hill residents. “We put up various options to Hunters Hill including charging virtually half the price Hunters Hill contributes and I think they have gone for a cut price option,” he said. “If I was a Hunters Hill resident I would be disappointed, particularly as we share the Gladesville Library.” The deal with Lane Cove saves Hunters Hill around $700,000 a year once the agreement with Ryde expires next year. Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett rejected

the claim the decision is a bad deal for local residents and hailed it as a step closer to a first library owned, financed and operated by the heritage municipality. “Moving to a new joint use agreement with Lane Cove Council puts us a step closer to having our own library in the heart of Hunters Hill, he said. “In the meantime, we can provide library services and programs to the people of Hunters Hill in Hunters Hill, with a home library in Lane Cove, just five kilometres away from the centre of our own municipality.” Hunters Hill Councillor Ben Collins (Lib) has been an outspo-

ken critic of the cost associated with the Ryde agreement and welcomed the new deal. “We face a significant challenge with our budget in Hunters Hill and saving hundreds of thousands of dollars means that we can use that money to provide those services ratepayers expect us to provide,” he said. Mayor Bennett is aware that a reliance on Ryde to provide services in Hunters Hill only strengthens the case to have his municipality forcibly merged with Ryde although he conceded that Ryde had provided a good library service. “We acknowledge the successful library services partnership we have forged with the City of Ryde over many decades,” he said. “However, maintain-

ing the status quo is significantly more costly for Hunters Hill ratepayers, in a noncentral location to most residents and does not move our community towards a local government area-based service. “Hunters Hill Council’s joint use agreement with the City of Ryde, to provide a library service at Ryde’s Gladesville branch and enable access to the broader City of Ryde library service network, costs Hunters Hill more than $700,000 a year. “An agreement with Lane Cove will save Hunters Hill up to $500,000 a year, with new library programs and activities for people of all ages, such as rhyme time, school holiday activities, author talks and arts and crafts, staged within the Hunters Hill local government area.

6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 2 October, 2019

Police called to to assist at Ryde council meeting Police responded to a call last week to assist with restraining a distraught woman understood to have been impacted by council’s heritage reforms, who was screaming abuse in the gallery. Three patrol cars attended council chambers at Top Ryde around 10pm on Tuesday after the woman screamed “killers! killers!” at the Mayor, councillors and staff. She was pacified by people in the public gallery believed to be friends. Police later interviewed an ambulance officer and witnesses to the incident, which prompted Mayor Jerome Laxale to temporarily suspend the meeting. The woman’s reaction appears to have been triggered by a failed rescission motion to remove council endorsed heritage protection on an historic home at 68 Denistone Road which the Chen Yang family wants to redevelop The family is also alleged to have started demolition work on the site in breach of council rules. The council meeting also heard resident claims that racist comments had been posted on social media over the heritage protection debate and concerns were expressed that Chen Yang had been labelled as a property developer. “He is not a developer and even if he was there is nothing wrong with that, I blame the council for this and ask is it

fair?” resident Yi Lei told the council meeting. Liberal Councillor Jordan Lane moved to have the rescission motion vote retaken in response to the incident and in response to earlier pleas from speakers for the council to show “mercy and compassion” on the family by voting in support of the rescission motion. The motion was initiated by Clr Simon Zhou (Ind) who said the removal of heritage protection would be “the humane thing to do” for the family. “They wanted to experience the great Australian dream and now this family is clearly suffering,” he said. Liberal Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM was one of four councillors who supported the unsuccessful rescission motion and he stressed that when the family purchased the home it did not have heritage protection and a previous council regime did not enforce heritage protection. “You cannot change the goalposts while you are playing the game,” he said. “When they bought this house it was not heritage listed. “If this council is so desperate to heritage list

this then let the council buy the property.” The Council heritage protection campaign has prompted strong feelings for and against it. Last week the intense debate forced the council to postpone heritage policy community consultation sessions when council staff expressed fears for their safety in response to what they reported to be aggressive and threatening behaviour by anti-protection protesters. These sessions will be resumed under a new format which will allow for smaller and individual consultation and will provide staff with an opportunity to put the issue into perspective and give precise details of which homes could be identified as heritage homes. Independent Clr Roy Maggio told Tuesday night’s council meeting he is now of the opinion that heritage listing should be the sole right and responsibility of the home owner. His opinion is not supported by a large section of the community and by many people who own homes in streets where most homes are historic and where property values along the street are diminished when heritage homes are demol-

Mayor Jerome Laxale marchs with heritage policy supporters in historic Chatham Road, Denistone. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO ished and replaced by new homes. “You either live in a heritage street or you don’t,” one Chatham Road, Denistone resident told The Weekly Times. “Many heritage home owners purchase their homes not just because the home is a heritage home, but because it is in a street which is a beautiful, heritage street.” Heritage supporters argue that homes in Hunters Hill are among the

most valuable homes in Sydney because that municipality protects heritage streets - as well as historic homes – which provisions that include strict on street parking restrictions and signage bans. In Ryde, many heritage supporters simply want to pass on the legacy of the past to future generations. John Court spoke at the council meeting and said he had lived in Ryde for more than 70 of his 80 years.

“As a resident I see it as unfair when developers can buy off homes and build big boxes just for a fat profit,” he said. “I appeal to councillors to respect the views of residents over developers and this city has surely had a fair share of development. “My age group is growing and we are aware of the power of our vote.” Denistone resident William Lloyd told the council meeting he is appalled that some councillors backed the

rescission motion. “Three councillors put in this rescission motion and this is an appalling move and residents will hold these three councillors to account for it.” Residents Jessica Zhu and Lucy Chen also spoke at the meeting where they expressed their anger with the heritage protection action. “This council condemned China government in Hong Kong and shuts down freedom and democracy here,” Lucy Chen said.

Ryde City council acts on our report on Boronia Park safety

Wednesday 2 October, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7

THE RISK to pedestrians crossing Pittwater Road in Boronia Park – reported in a recent exclusive in The Weekly Times – is being dealt with by the City of Ryde which is considering a landscaped pedestrian island. The proposed pedestrian island is likely to be situated on Pittwater Road near the Harris Farm supermarket where local residents told TWT pedestrians had been hit by cars while dodging traffic to cross the road. The proposal was outlined in a council motion by Clr Penny Pedersen. “As well as the actions proposed in my motion I would also like to hear what local shoppers, residents and motorists think about the current 6o kilometre speed limit on Pittwater Road at the shopping precinct,” she told The Weekly Times. Councillor Roy Maggio and Hunters Hill councillors Ben Collins and Elizabeth Krassoi recently spoke about their concerns in the TWT article but the Pedersen motion is the first official recognition that serious safety issues exist. “Council acknowledges the risk to pedestrian safety that exists on Pittwater Road at Boronia Park shopping precinct,” Clr Pedersen’s motion states. It requests that Council commission a road safety audit to investigate the risk to pedestri-

ans in crossing Pittwater Road between Gannet Street and Thompson Street in Boronia Park. “The audit is to include the assessment of erecting pedestrian fencing or a pedestrian barrier along the median strip or other pedestrian traffic devices and/ or signage in Pittwater Road through the Boronia Park shops to limit where pedestrians are able to cross,” the motion states. It requests that the City of Ryde consults with Hunters Hill Council, the Gladesville Main Street Committee, local residents and local business on both sides of Pittwater Road, including Harris Farm Market and Woolworths and encourage them to make submissions about the pedestrian issues. It also requests that Council be provided a report with the outcomes of the road safety audit and consultation as soon as practicable. Many of the issues raised through this newspaper by local residents and parents at Boronia Park Public School were presented in a background report

to the Pedersen motion. “The segment of Pittwater Road between Gannet Street and Thompson Street, Gladesville is a popular commercial strip that includes Harris Farm Markets, Woolworths, a number of speciality shops and regular bus services,” the background report notes. “While a signalised pedestrian crossing is located at the northern end of this strip, at the intersection of Pittwater Road and Thompson Street pedestrians are frequently observed crossing Pittwater Road between Gannet Street and Thompson Street in a random and irregular pattern. “Council officers met with Hunter’s Hill Council to discuss pedestrian safety issues along Pittwater Road outside Harris Farm Supermarket and following a site meeting Council commissioned a road safety audit to investigate installing a refuge island at this location. “The audit determined that a pedestrian refuge island at this location would facilitate safer pedestrian movements across Pittwater Road.”

Amity Rogers remembered on North Ryde common 8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 2 October, 2019

A dignified plaque dedicated to a child who last year passed away from a brainstem tumour was unveiled on North Ryde Common on the weekend.

The family of six year old Amity Rogers was at the unveiling ceremony which saw the plaque placed at at spot where the little girl loved to play Her mum Mary Ellen told The Weekly Times why the plaque was important to the family. “Our family was walking through the Common when we saw a plaque and wondered if we could do the same for Amity,” she said. “At the cemetery we don’t talk about her, but at the Common, where she loved to play, we feel connected to her.” A few months ago, Amity – a student at North Ryde’s Truscott Street School - was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG); a fatal pediatric brain tumour. The tumour was aggressive and inoperable and took away her ability to walk and talk. “The end was slow and lonely for Amity, although we were by her side constantly.,” Mary Ellen recalls. “She was terrified, sad and angry and said it is so unfair. “The last two months of Amity’s life were particularly difficult as she slowly lost her ability to walk and play, which was a huge blow to her sense of self. “We miss her talk so much, especially her funny little observations and jokes. “To meet our Amity was to meet a funny, joyous, clever, loving, spirited girl who said, I Love You to us every day. “ She was an artful negotiator and was always able to find the perfect way to keep everyone happy and she was kind. “ Amity would readily sacrifice to help a sibling, a friend, a cousin.”

A special magic

Walks through the Common with Amity took on a special magic of their own and perhaps the family hope the plaque can help bring something of that magic into the lives of others. “ A short trip to the park required donning four rings, a necklace, headband and cowboy boots,” Mary Ellen said. “ She thought princesses were rubbish and preferred to draw dinosaurs and dragons and she always drew sunglasses on the sun.” Ryde Liberal Councillor Jordan Lane had proposed the plaque during a City of Ryde Council meeting and said he felt immense pride when it was unveiled. “With two sisters of my own, I can only imagine the heartache of Amity’s siblings, Atticus, Rufus and Georgia, not to mention her incredible parents. “Yet I am so proud to represent a community that has done so much to support the Rogers family during their terrible ordeal. “This plaque can never replace the loss of a loved one, but it can serve to help raise awareness about childhood brain cancer and reminder passers-by what life is truly about.” The plaque was supported by Council in July last year, and adorns Mary Ellen Rogers is pictured with baby Georgia, Rufus, Atticus and their faithful companion Betty. Parramatta News and Views

Emerging technology brings Parramatta’s history into the future THE CITY of Parramatta Council is creating a 3D digital record of significant heritage items as part of a new Smart City program. Using cutting-edge technology, Council is digitising fragile and rare artefacts to make unique historical pieces and their stories more accessible to the public and preserve the City’s history for future generations. “Recording our treasured historical artefacts in this way will help us to share the story of Parramatta and consequently Sydney and Australia with a broader audience and give people around the globe access to fragile items,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said. “The project aims to build Parramatta’s digital capabilities using innovative methods and technology, and presents an opportunity for Council to work with other heritage partners across the City to experiment with 3D scanning technology and promote Parramatta’s rich history. “We hope that this technology becomes a useful tool for understanding and docu-

menting the past, engages more people in the story of our City, and becomes part of getting a whole new generation of people excited about heritage.” Councillor Steven Issa, Chair of the Smart City Advisory Committee, and Councillor Sameer Pandey, a Smart City Advisory Committee member, said they were excited to see the project take shape. “There are many potential future applications of technology in heritage conservation, customer service and digitisation,” Clr Pandey said. “This is a great first step in Parramatta using technology to better engage our community with the history of the City,” Among the items scanned in the initial program are Mayoral regalia, a medal from the Juvenile Industrial Exhibition held in Parramatta Park in 1883, a cedar commode chest circa 1880 from Old Government House, a

hand-powered vacuum cleaner from the Newington Armory, and a military ration tin from the New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum. Each of these items were selected because of their historical connection to the area and storytelling opportunity online. City of Parramatta Council is working on this pilot project in partnership with other owners of local heritage items, including New South Wales Lancers Memorial Museum, Old Government House, Newington Armory and Sydney Olympic Park Authority, to further promote heritage and better engage people with the history of the area. If the scans prove popular, more items may be added to the collection over time. The project is a collaboration between the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre and Council’s Future City program.

HERITAGE

REVIEW 2019 Heritage acknowledges our past and can help improve our future. The City of Ryde currently has 173 heritage properties and 5 heritage conservation areas on its heritage list (Heritage Schedule). Having these tangible links to our past captures the charm of our area and their listing helps balance all the changes occurring in the area. Recently, a Heritage Review was commissioned and it proposed the following items be added to Council’s heritage list: • 44 heritage properties (individual properties with heritage significance). 11 of these are Council or Government owned. • 6 heritage conservation areas (an area that has heritage significance) • 2 archaeological sites (the former Squire’s Brewery and Halvorsen’s Boat Yard in Putney and the Glades Bay Baths in Gladesville). We have listened to our community who asked for further clarity on the 2019 Heritage Review and have updated the information on our website, changed the community sessions and will be extending the consultation by a further two weeks. Where can I find out more? For more information including access to our interactive online map of the proposed heritage listings, please visit Council’s website at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay/heritage

‘The New Heart of Ryde’ wins the support of the community I am so pleased that Council has endorsed progressing with its plans for a new civic, cultural and community hub, following the release of a report which identified 85% community support for ‘The New Heart of Ryde’. For the first time we are giving the community what they asked for, in terms of more space for meetings, performances and cultural activities. Council will now go out to market with the proposal, with a view to report back to Council on ‘The New Heart of Ryde’ in March 2020. Find out more and view the new concept images, which incorporate community feedback, at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/heart. New information sessions for the 2019 Heritage Review We have listened to our community and will be extending the consultation period for the 2019 Heritage Review by a further two weeks, to Sunday 10 November, and are expanding the face-to-face information sessions. There will be more in-depth information in our community languages including Chinese and Korean. Council invites all those who own a property that is proposed to be listed as a Heritage Item, or part of a proposed Heritage Conservation Area, to come along to our new consultation sessions, which are tailored to proposed listings and offer the opportunity to ask questions of Council staff.

Councillor Roy Maggio has played a leading role in organising the festival and hopes it will be as successful as the Cork N Fork Festival in nearby Meadowbank. “The Cork N Fork event was a success because it was well advertised in the local newspaper and it had $25,000 in sponsorship,” he said. “The idea behind this festival is to let people know that the Putney Village is here and who is here at the Putney Village. “It is a celebration of each and every business and a celebration of everyone who makes Putney a great place to live and work.” For more information visit www. riversidechamber.com.au

The funeral of Liberal stalwart Gloria Harriett Evlyn Martin (92) was held at St Albans Anglican Church in Epping on Friday.

Eulogies were given by former Prime Minister John Howard and this Eulogy by prominent Liberal Janice Photios; “Gloria Martin was a woman of strong beliefs, convictions and moral fortitude, was characteristically defined by her passionate love and fierce loyalty to her Liberal Party and her country Australia. “A woman of inner strength and dignity, Gloria had an energy and a zest for life which left others half her age in her wake, and her love of country was infectious and her loyalty to others unsurpassed. “I first met this strong, passionate, woman of principles in 1994 whilst she was volunteering tirelessly in the back rooms of electoral offices and my admiration and gratitude was instant. “The more I got to know this pintsized, pocket-rocket over the following 25 years, the more my admiration and gratitude multiplied. “She stood by her principles no matter what others thought. “She wore her heart on her sleeve and called a spade a spade.” Gloria Martin was born in Cairns, Queensland on March 19, 1927 and was the only daughter of Evlyn Erly Martin and her father, George Maurice Martin. She was the youngest of three children and had older brothers, George Frederick Joffre and William Henry Norman, 8 years older. Gloria’s mother died at the age of 44 when Gloria was only 10 years old. “Going through your

childhood and teenage years without a mother’s guidance and wisdom, or even just the reassurance of loving arms and a motherly embrace would have had to be tough,” Janice Photios said. Politics always played a large role in her life. “Gloria could speak not only with conviction and lucidity, she could write just as eloquently and she was known to write eight page letters in topics about which she felt strongly to various Members of Parliament,” Janice Photios said. In Sydney, Gloria gained employment at Le Tourneau Westinghouse in Rydalmere, an American manufacturer of heavy duty earthmoving equipment where she spent the bulk of her professional career. “A hardworker by nature, Gloria would have been competent and efficient in every task. “After her retirement from Le Tourneau Westinghouse, Gloria became a selfemployed businesswoman. In 1987 Gloria joined Eastwood South branch of the Liberal Party. “Gloria was also the Conference Secretary for the Federal seat of Bennelong for 12 years joining the hardworking team of Graham Bellamy, Stephen Peoples, Mike Beinke and Robert Duic. “She volunteered for over a decade in John Howard’s electoral office whom she served with humble distinction with no task beneath her whether it be filing, photocopy-

ing, enveloping or whatever was needed to be done.” Gloria was a loving wife, Janice Photios said. “Not many women have the good luck to marry a man with the same surname as oneself. “Yes, Gloria Martin had the good fortune to meet and marry Mr Sidney Martin. “They married on 29th April 1950 when Gloria was 23 years old and Sid was 25, right here in this beautiful St Alban’s Church. “It was a long marriage until Sid’s death in 1997.” Janice Photios said Gloria was a woman of style. “She was always immaculately dressed in a dress or two piece suit with one of her trademark brooches

on her lapel. “There was not an occasion, be it a lunch, dinner, outing or from just a small gesture of flowers or card, that Gloria did not send out a handwritten letter of thanks and appreciation.” She was also a Christian. “In the last two weeks of Gloria’s life, whilst at Ryde Hospital, Gloria repeatedly asked her visitors will you pray for me?” “Gloria was a woman of faith. “On Thursday September 5, Gloria prayed, gave her heart to the Lord and was born again. “Heaven is her new home. “There will never be another Gloria Martin. “Rest in heaven, our darling Gloria.”

Marching against domestic violence .. Police Sgt Jerrod Luck and Clr Penny Pedersen hope clubs, corporations and communities will support the White Ribbon Day event in Macquarie Park. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO

Police will stop traffic for a Macquarie Park march

One of the largest marches ever held in the City of Ryde will take over the streets of Macquarie Park in November to raise awareness of what men can do to stop domestic violence. The march will be held on Friday, November 22 from 11am to 1pm and starts at the Engineering Faculty Building at Macquarie University and finishes at Eloura Reserve. It is the initiative of Ryde LAC Police Domestic Violence officer Sgt Jerrod Luck who recently raised the idea with City of Ryde Clr Penny Pedersen to promote the White Ribbon Day message that men should take a stand against violence against women. “I want this march to be huge, to stop the traffic,” Sgt Luck told The Weekly Times. “I see it as an important step for-

ward to encourage men to take a stand against domestic violence as part of campaign started by men, for men.” The Ryde Hunters Hill Domestic Violence Committee has backed the march alongside the City of Ryde Council. Ryde Secondary College which will provide band music for the march. Sergeant Luck said Macquarie Park was chosen for the route to engage the corporate business community, university students, commuters, neighbourhood watch, clubs and men from the Korean speaking committee who he especially hopes will take the white

suffered a serious domestic violence related injury. Councillor Pedersen said she is impressed by Sergeant Luck’s passion to promote the White Ribbon Day March and seeks as much community support for the march as possible. “Sergeant Luck spoke with me about how brilliant it would be to get council support for the march and now I’m urging every Neighbourhood Watch group, every business and every club to get involved,” she said. One of her initiatives is to have every club and pub tie a white ribbon on a tree outside their premises and

to tell The Weekly Times that they are proud to support the march. “If male patrons take the White Ribbon Day pledge that would also be significant,” she said. “With the larger corporations we hope to attract support from human resources managers and OH&S representatives and have their entire workforce backing this.” University students, lecturers and staff will be invited to join the march while Senior Constable Debbie Chrystal will be visiting local schools to seek the support of teachers and parents.

Mad Sunday celebrations after Hawks claim title

Hawks stretch winning streak to lift Sydney Shield league trophy

Ryde Eastwood Hawks’ Josh Risk flies through the air to score during the Sydney Shield Grand Final on Saturday (pic: Bryden Sharp/Facebook); the Hawks savouring the moment at Leichhardt Oval (centre) after claiming their their first Sydney Sheild title and (right) a costume change on the day after for some well-deserved Mad Sunday celebration.

By CHRIS KARAS

RYDE EASTWOOD Leagues Club sponsored sporting teams have capped a remarkable week by securing two major trophies in netball and rugby league. Three days after the Eastwood Ryde Hawks brought home the Netball NSW Premier League Opens championship, Walt Wilson’s rugby league warriors downed Cabramatta 22-12 to win the 2019 NSWRL Sydney Shield premiership title last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval. Clever five eighth Adam Rizk proved the architect - guiding the

Hawks to a resounding Grand Final victory over the minor premiers with his astute kicking and slick service to earn the Player of the Match award for best on ground. It was a maiden Sydney Shield premiership for the marauding Hawks, who chalked up an eleventh successive victory to snare the trophy. Ryde Eastwood’s Head of Football Operations Michael Frain described the Hawks’ Grand Final triumph as “a phenomenal finish to the season.” “The team started to gell after four weeks into the competition

and then reeled off eleven straight wins to clinch the premiership - an unbelievable effort from the boys,” said Frain. Adam Rizk created tries for back rower Tyler Seymour and fullback Angelo Panambalana with deft kicks and menaced the Two Blues each time he handled the ball. Cabramatta centre Tavena Koroisau and lock Sam McGregor kept the Two Blues in the hunt with determined tries but the Hawks soon gained the upper hand when centre Bradley Cousins burst through to score before setting up

another four pointer for utility ace Josh Rizk, who scooted 70 metres to nab a vital try. There were mixed feelings for Hawks’ head honcho Frain after the game. He was there to celebrate with the jubilant Ryde Eastwood players and also to console his eldest son Justin, 20, who was a key forward for Cabramatta in the title decider. RYDE EASTWOOD 22 (T Seymour, B Cousins, J Rizk, A Panambalana tries; J Rizk 2, B Wheelhouse gls) d CABRAMATTA 12 (T Koroisau, S McGregor tries; C Papa 2 gls).

Super Hawks clinch maiden Premier League netball title By CHRIS KARAS

EASTWOOD RYDE Hawks netballers are the toast of the district after capturing the 2019 Netball NSW Premier League Opens championship trophy. Jen Wright’s mighty Hawks reign supreme after trouncing minor premiers and rivals Central Coast Heart 68-44 in a dominant Grand Final performance at Netball Central in Sydney Olympic Park last Wednesday night. In a magnificent team effort the classy Eastwood Ryde line up showed their champion qualities from the outset with dynamic centre Georgia Marshall capping a superb game by receiving the Most Valuable Player Award. Experienced goalkeeper and inspirational skipper Jessica Grant turned in a vintage defensive display during the Hawks’ 24goal triumph with support from NSW Swifts wing defender Sophie Halpin and goal de-

fence Nicole Styles. Just as impressive for the Hawks were Australian Diamonds Development goal attack Kiera Austin and emerging shooter Alison Miller, who were lethal in front of goal. Both Austin and Miller registered goals with unerring accuracy as they capitalised on the slick service provided from talented wing attack Claire O’Brien. It was a classy showing by the skilful O’Brien who fed the shooting circle with aplomb during the pressure big match moments. Eastwood Ryde came into the game with a huge amount of confidence after blitzing GWS Fury 77-42 in the preliminary final and it was too much for last year’s champions Heart to put a lid on. Two early intercepts

by the ever-alert Halpin opened up an early lead for the Hawks and with five minutes to go in the first quarter they were ahead by six. From there they kept steamrolling and controlled the rest of the quarter, finishing 17-10 in front. Heart were nervous and slow to release the ball, giving their opposition plenty of opportunity to pounce and win the ball back. The Central Coast side failed to make a connection in their attack end and they suffered for itwith Hawks pulling ahead by 13 goals (3623) by half time. Every player on the Hawks side stepped up their defensive efforts, creating turnovers all over the court and limiting Heart to score just seven goals in the third quarter. The nail in the cof-
