Capriccio Festival of Kites Soars into Its 25th Year OGUNQUIT Ogunquit’s end-of-summer tradition returns with a week of music, community, and one of the area’s most beloved events: the annual Capriccio Festival of Kites. The festivities take place Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Main Beach, a joyful, colorful day of family fun. Laudholm Nature Crafts Festival Returns for 38th Year WELLS A popular tradition continues the weekend after Labor Day as the Laudholm Nature Crafts Festival returns to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm for its 38th year. Artwork and fine crafts by New England artisans will be on display Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is a celebration of art, craft, and community, as well as the largest annual fundraiser for the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. This year’s festival will feature more than 150 juried artisans showcasing painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, fiber crafts, mixed-media work, and more. A variety of local food and beverage offerings, from

ELIOT Fi r s t C o n g r e g a t io n a l Church of Eliot will host its 11th annual Wild Blueberry Festival on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1361 State Road in Eliot. The small but mighty church will celebrate all things blueberry with a festival that has become a community tradition. Organized by the church’s “fun-raising” team, the festival will offer something for everyone. The morning will begin with fresh, “made-with-love” blueberry pancakes served from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Guests can stay for crafts, children’s activities, local vendors offering handmade wares and previously loved jewelry, and secondhand finds from Upscale Resale. For lunch, festivalgoers can enjoy pulled pork or chicken sandwiches. The Spruce Creek Chorale will provide entertainment early in the morning, with The Stairwells taking over later in the day.
Those who love live local music will appreciate the performances throughout the day. The First Congregational Church of Eliot has kept everyone in mind with this joyous, faithfilled, blueberry-flavored event. With all proceeds supporting the church’s mission and ministry, there is even more reason to come out and enjoy a day filled with blueberries, music, crafts, food and community. Maine’s Fall Foliage Reports Add New Event Feature STATEWIDE The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will launch its 2026 fall foliage reporting season Wednesday, Sept. 9, with weekly reports tracking the progression of fall color across the state. Reports will be available online and by email to subscribers each Wednesday throughout the season, following the progression of color from northern Maine and higher elevations south toward the coast. For the first time, organizations, communities, and event organizers can submit fall events for consideration in the weekly foliage reports, giving residents and visitors another way to experience the season across Maine. “Fall foliage is more than something to see, it’s an invitation to experience Maine,” said DACF Commissioner Amanda Beal. “Whether that means visiting a farm, hiking a trail, attend-
ing a harvest festival, exploring a downtown, or simply following a scenic by-way, our weekly reports help people follow the color and discover more of Maine along the way.” Maine Forest Service experts expect peak fall foliage to follow its typical progression from north to south, with trees at higher elevations generally changing color before those at lower elevations. Maine’s diverse tree species, landscapes, and growing conditions contribute to its extended fall foliage season. Northern and coastal areas offer contrasts between evergreens and maples, birches, and oaks, while inland forests provide a range of fall color among the state’s lakes, rivers, mountains, and working landscapes. For 2026, DACF is inviting organizations, communities, farms, nonprofits, municipalities, and event organizers to submit public fall events for possible inclusion in Maine’s Weekly Foliage Reports. Eligible events include harvest festivals, agricultural fairs, farm and food events, outdoor recreation and nature activities, arts and cultural events, community celebrations, and other activities that complement the fall foliage experience. 2026 Ogunquit Home & Garden Tour Celebrates Third Year OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Home & Garden Tour returns for its third year Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with this year’s self-guided walking tour taking place in the Perkins Cove neighborhood. Proceeds support Rett’s Roost, which provides healing retreats for families facing childhood cancer and child loss. The walking tour features homes and gardens in the Marginal Way neighborhoods, highlighting several unique properties and gardens in and around the Cove. These thoughtfully designed properties contain eye-catching decor, prolific gardens, intriguing history, and
awe-inspiring ocean views. No properties will be repeated from the first two years of the tour. Rett’s Roost volunteers will be stationed along the route and at each home to manage traffic. Rett’s Roost families will be stationed near their family storyboards to answer questions about how Rett’s Roost has helped their families during their time of need. The entire route is less than 1 mile long, and the tour should take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to visit all of the homes. Transportation and parking

Kittery Moves to Build Coastal Resilience with New Hazard Overlay Area After years of research and public hearings, the Kittery Town Council unanimously passed a new Coastal Hazards Ordinance on Monday, August 24, 2026. The ordinance is designed to increase resilience to coastal flooding as sea levels rise and coastal storms become more severe. Developed in collaboration with the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), the overlay was recommended in Kittery’s 2024 Climate Action Plan, which calls for directing growth toward areas with existing infrastructure and lower flood risk.
What the Area Covers Unlike FEMA flood zones, which are based largely on historical flooding, Kittery’s new overlay considers future coastal flood risk. It uses sea-level rise projections from the state’s Maine Won’t Wait climate plan, including scenarios of 1.6 feet and 3.0 feet of sea-level rise. Approximately 860 properties are touched by the overlay, but the town estimates that structures on about 130 properties are actually located within the hazard area. The regulations apply to work on structures within the area, not unaffected portions of larger lots.
What Property Owners Need to Know The ordinance is not retroactive and does not require existing homeowners to make changes to their properties.

For new construction and full rebuilds, structures must generally be located outside the coastal hazard area to the greatest practical extent possible. Limited exceptions apply to water-dependent uses, such as docks and piers, and certain shoreline resilience measures.

For renovations, the requirements apply when a project qualifies as a substantial improvement, meaning construction costs equal 50% or more of the structure’s appraised market value. Routine interior projects, such as kitchen renovations, would not trigger the ordinance unless they meet that threshold.

WELLS This week, it’s all about kittens. Safe Haven has an abundance of fuzzy, furry cuteness at the shelter—three separate litters of kittens, all born in May, now available for adoption. Kittens are crazy, funny, fast, unpredictable, and fearless. They need supervision. It’s easier when they’re adopted in pairs because they keep each other company. Bored kittens can become a problem. One might end up exploring the refrigerator, toilet, or dresser drawers. They play games like “Trip the Human,” “Climb the Pant Leg” and “Teethe on Mom’s Arm.” Two kittens entertain each other. They’ll compete in crabwalking competitions and silly wrestling matches that keep them entertained for hours. They expend most of that youthful
energy on each other, then suddenly fall asleep, usually near or on top of one another. Pairs of kittens are bonded for life, which means they always have a built-in best friend. They can keep each other company, play together, and make those hours home alone a little easier. Bonus: Less guilt when the humans head out the door! These kittens are so cute! Tabbies, calicos, gray/whites, orange/whites and blacks are available. They’re socialized, healthy, and ready for homes. Expect plenty of fun, love, and laughter. Come meet them soon! Barbara E Fullerton, 73 YORK – Better known as “Mom,” “Nana,” “Nan,” “Snan,” “Nana B,” “Barbara,” “Barbs,” and “Babs.” This won’t be a list of where she went to school or where she worked, although she excelled at being a mom and nana. It won’t list any awards or nominations, or that her high school photo was used as a display by the photography company without her knowledge because of her stunning beauty (See what we did there? We know, mom—so embarrassing!). These are just words to read in the paper or on the internet. There are no words and there aren’t enough lifetimes to describe our mom, but we are going to try. Mom was everything. She was thoughtful, loyal, and kind. She was honest and faithful. She had beauty and smarts and God almighty (Hear that mom? We are quoting you!) she had humor. Man, was she funny and quick-witted! A belly-aching, tears-running-down-your-face,

It’s indescribable, the kind of love you think doesn’t exist and yet, we were all so lucky to feel it. We always will. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. We had so many plans, so many more memories to make. Mom leaves behind what she was most proud of and considered her greatest accomplishments: her sons Danny and his wife, Amy, and Michael and his wife, Alysia; her daughter and best friend, Maureen (“Mo”— I’m still mad you named me Mau reen, Mom!) a nd her spouse, Dan; and her precious grandchildren Sophie, Holden, and Kyla Fullerton, and Trace, Tyson, and Birdie O’Brien. She also leaves behind many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and an extra special aunt and cousin. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John (Boomer). In lieu of f lowers, please wear something with sparkle; go find a bargain; if you think something nice, say it; and for crying out loud, love one another. For those who feel the desire, some of mom’s favorite charities are: Cops for Kids with Cancer, the 100 Club, St. Jude, and any animal rescue organization. How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.

Diane Natasha Taylor, 79 YORK – It is with great sadness to report that Diane Natasha Taylor passed away at her home in York on August 23 at the age of 79. She leaves behind her husband of 44 years, Ron Furst; her two adult children, Asa and Peter Furst; her loving daughterin-law, Luca Balogh- Furst; and two grandchildren, Alma and Viola. Diane also leaves her sister, Karen Fry, and Karen’s husband, Gary Fry, of Barrington, NH, and her brother’s wife, Vinette Varvaro. Diane graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1969 and went on to obtain her master’s degree at the University of Rhode Island in Library
Science. Diane worked as a children’s librarian at Main Street School in Exeter, NH for 25 years and at the Portsmouth Public library. She spent 25 summers codirecting Camp Hawthorne in Raymond. She never missed an opportunity to perform in camp skits, nurturing the creative spirit
of the camp. Diane woke up each day with joy, looking forward to work. She often said that her job as a children’s librarian never felt like work, since she loved inspiring children to read quality children’s literature. Diane was a happy and content person, always positive in her mental attitude and never depressed, no matter what cancer treatment she had to endure. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ‘Sweeney Todd’ Hacks It Up at Hackmatack Maxwell Creedon, Teddy Wilkin and Kate Piatti. Director Tom Alsip shared how the creative team is approaching Sweeney Todd as a story that brings musical theater and horror together, leaning into the unique atmosphere of Hackmatack’s historic barn. “I have always felt that Sweeney Todd is the closest that musical theatre gets to the horror genre. And that’s something I wanted to lean into here,” said Alsip. “The barn’s unique look has a very industrial feel. Knowing that the show takes place mostly on Fleet Street, I wanted to marry the look of the barn to the world of being near the docks in London.” Alsip’s approach also uses the space beyond the stage to create a more immersive experience for audiences. “This enables the playing space to spill off the stage into the house, further blending the world of the audience with the world of the performers,” he said. While “Sweeney Todd” is known for its grand and theatrical style, Alsip hopes to heighten the darker elements of the story. “I want to expand that out in a way that is more frightening, grim, macabre,” reflects Alsip.

Burns visited Maine on July 30 for a fundraiser hosted by Graves Library, where he spoke with News Center Maine anchor Rob Caldwell. The recorded conversation will be shown in the library’s Community Room, offering audiences the opportunity to revisit Burns’ words, wit, and insights with professional camera work and sound. The showing will be moderated by Hal Kushner, a retired Army f light surgeon who survived nearly six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam and appeared in several episodes of Burns’ PBS series “The Vietnam War.” Kushner will introduce the recorded conversation and lead an audience discussion afterward. Burns is widely regarded as one of the most influential documentary filmmakers in television history. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has developed a distinctive approach to historical storytelling that combines archival photographs, music and first-person narration. The technique of panning and zooming across still photographs became so closely associated with his work that it is commonly known as the “Ken Burns effect.” His acclaimed PBS docu-
mentaries include “The Civil War” (1990), “Baseball” (1994), “The National Parks” (2009) and “The Vietnam War” (2017). His work has earned numerous Emmy and Peabody Awards and has influenced how generations of viewers experience American history. Kushner has described Burns as “the poet laureate of history,” a fitting introduction to an afternoon devoted to the filmmaker’s distinctive way of bringing the past to life. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ‘Beau Geste’ with Live Music at Leavitt Theatre OGUNQUIT It was the blockbuster film that ignited a public craze for desert adventure stories and helped launch Ronald Colman and William Powell to cinematic stardom. The original silent-film version of “Beau Geste,” released in 1926, turns 100 this year. Audiences flocked to theaters for its gripping story, stellar performances, and exotic locales. A special centennial screening is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St., Ogunquit. The screening, the latest in the Leavitt Theatre’s Silent Film Series, will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in creating music for silent films. Three tight-knit English brothers join the French Foreign Legion in Algeria after a family heirloom goes missing. Expecting high adventure, they instead find themselves fighting for their lives in the Sahara—against their fellow legionnaires. Produced by
Paramount, the film was based on Percival Christopher Wren’s popular 1924 novel. Wren was a British writer known for his adventure stories. The film stars future Oscar winner Ronald Colman in the title role as Michael “Beau” Geste. The cast also includes William Powell and Neil Hamilton, who decades later would play Commissioner Gordon in the 1960s television series “Batman.” The production was to be made on location in Algeria, but the ongoing Rif War prohibited filming. It was shot instead in the desert southwest of Yuma, AZ. “Beau Geste” took in $1.5 million at the box office, an enormous sum at the time, making it the year’s third highest grossing film, behind only the war drama “What Price Glory?” and “The Black Pirate,” starring Douglas Fairbanks. Released before the advent of the Academy Awards, “Beau Geste” won the Photoplay Medal of Honor, one of the industry’s first awards recognizing the best

As an editorial photographer, Payne-Sylvester received national awards for magazine cover photography, including the New York’s Art Director’s Club. Her work has been published in The Christian Science Monitor, the New York Times, and Art in America. Her fine art photography has been purchased by major Boston companies. Payne-Sylvester moved to York in 2000 where she has exhibited through the York and Kittery Art Associations and the Ogunquit Barn Gallery. Her recent collage work has evolved from her earlier photography of still life floral imagery with its focus on reflections and shadow patterns. “For many years I did fine art photography of still life floral imagery, but my original interest in painting called to me. I wanted to express more spontaneity and abstraction than what I was able to do in photography. I was led to mixed media collage which incorporates painting, drawing, and photography, with paper collage using my earlier photography and art prints as source material to cut up,” she said. Wit, whimsy, and a sense of romance are themes Susan Victoria Fried explores in her multimedia collages and paintings.
YORK York Public Library has announced “Collage Connections,” an exhibition of collage art by artists Linda Payne-Sylvester and Susan Victoria Fried, on display Sept. 2 through Oct. 30 in the library’s Upper Level. The public is invited to meet the artists at an opening reception Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and the event is free. The exhibit showcases the visual and thematic connections between the artists’ work through color, spontaneity, and whimsy. Music plays a role in their art through movement, rhythm, and descriptive titles. Fashion and Pop Art are also shared themes in both artists’ work. Each artist draws on her personal experience, incorporating snippets of text from childhood recollections and cherished memories. While attending the Boston Museum School, Payne-Sylvester’s attraction to the printing process led her to switch from painting to printmaking. After school, she started a career in the commercial printing and publishing fields, then photography and graphic design. She took workshops at Maine Photography Workshops (now Maine Media Workshops) and a workshop with

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Exploring Georgia O’Keeffe’s Years in Maine YORK York Public Library and Old York Historical Society invite the public to explore an often-overlooked chapter in the life of one of America’s most celebrated artists with “Georgia O’Keeffe in York, Maine, 19201928,” a presentation by York resident and researcher Sylvia Missal. The presentation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road. Few realize that York played a meaningful role in Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic development. While spending summers at a seaside guest house on Long Sands Beach between 1920 and 1928, O’Keeffe found
inspiration in the rugged Maine coast. Her close study of seashells during these visits marked a significant turning point in her artistic journey and reflected her lifelong pursuit of portraying nature in its most essential form. Driven by her curiosity about O’Keeffe’s connection to York, Missal began researching the artist’s time there and approached Old York Historical Society archivist Kaitlyn Fitzgerald. Coincidentally, just months earlier, the organization had been contacted by a researcher working on the National Historic Landmark designation for O’Keeffe’s New Mexico studios. “By combining clues from the National Historic Landmark
designation research with photographs from Old York’s collections, we were able to identify O’Keeffe’s likely residence on Long Sands Beach. Sharing this information and historic photographs with Sylvia has helped her bring O’Keeffe’s years in York to life, demonstrating how collaboration and historic collections can reveal forgotten chapters of York’s past,” said Fitzgerald. Duo Exhibit at Blue Door Gallery

Under a new agreement, Maine’s public universities will award up to eight college credits for JMG microcredentials that demonstrate proficiency in high-demand skills, including financial and digital literacy, entrepreneurship and leadership development. “JMG’s microcredentials demonstrate a student’s collegelevel learning and skill development in critical areas necessary to their future success and the
growth of the state’s workforce,” said UMS Chancellor Dannel Malloy. Maine has set a goal of having 70% of working-age adults hold postsecondary credentials that lead to good jobs by 2035. The state has expanded access to higher education through early college, direct and guaranteed admissions, online offerings, and adult degree-completion initiatives. Still, 55.5% of Mainers hold a high-value credential, while automation is increasing employers’ demand for skills such as leadership, communication, and judgment. Under the new program,

It is the first time faculty governance groups at Maine’s public universities have agreed to award college credit for microcredentials. The evaluation of JMG’s short courses followed the same process the University of Maine System uses to award credit for prior learning, including work and military experience. The partnership builds on JMG’s programming in all 16 Maine counties and its partnerships with Maine’s public universities, where JMG college success advisers are based. The model also is being considered by education systems in Kansas, Kentucky, West Virginia and Wisconsin through Generation US (GenUS), a national nonprofit launched by JMG. “We’ve watched too many students walk into our classrooms who never once saw college as a realistic option for themselves,” said JMG President and CEO Kimberley Acker Lipp. “Maine can’t afford that anymore. We’re the oldest state in the country, and we need more young people to stay and build careers here. Now a student can graduate high school having already earned eight college credits. That changes the math for a 16-year-old who is considering whether college is within reach.” Jobs for Maine’s Graduates is a statewide nonprofit that provides education, workforce, and life-skills programs to more than 13,000 students annually across all 16 Maine counties. nation pilot of ALRM, an emergency notification app designed to address a gap in how deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers receive critical safety information. Beginning Friday, Sept. 4, ALRM technology will be available at the Kennebunk northbound and southbound service plazas, making the MTA the first transportation organization in the country to host the accessible emergency alert technology in a public transportation setting. The ALRM app was created by Maine resident Gavin Phelan, who began developing the technology at age 14. Now 16, Phelan has begun contributing to discussions about more inclusive emergency safety systems. Phelan developed ALRM in response to several incidents, including the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, where a cornhole tournament for deaf and hard-ofhearing participants was underway. Some participants could not hear warnings about the active shooter. That same year, a deaf couple in Maine died of carbon monoxide poisoning because they could not hear their carbon monoxide detector. “These moments showed me a gap no one should have to experience,” Phelan said. “Cur-
rent emergency notification systems aren’t built for everyone, so I’ve been learning how to build an app that might make a difference.” More than 11 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the United States face this challenge, as public spaces such as airports, campuses, restaurants, and retail stores rely primarily on audible alarms, sirens, and intercom announcements. For people who cannot hear those alerts, access to emergency information can be limited when seconds matter most. ALR M provides realtime notifications of potential danger by detecting sounds such as fire alarms, gunshots, sirens, and other emergency alerts. The app requires no WiFi, is free to users, and is designed to work where an ALRM zone is established. As A LR M enters its public phase, Phelan is seeking user feedback to help refine the app. The technology was developed to address the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing people, but also could benefit people who are sensitive to noise, travelers using earbuds, and older adults experiencing hearing loss.
