Area Fire and Rescue Departments to Host 9/11 25th Anniversary Ceremony

KENNEBUNK 25 years ago, the United States experienced one of the darkest days in its history. On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives, including 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, 55 military personnel, and thousands of civilians whose lives were forever changed. On the 25th anniversary of September 11, area fire departments and rescue organizations invite firefighters, fire department honor guards, emergency medical personnel, law

enforcement officers, military personnel, veterans, elected officials, community leaders, and members of the public to join in a solemn ceremony of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude. The ceremony will honor the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to others, recognize the dedication of today’s first responders, and reaffirm the public’s commitment to never forget the heroes and victims of that fateful day. The ceremony will unfold as fol-

Pumpkin Patch Celebrates 12 Years YORK The Pumpkin Patch at First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, is a cherished fall tradition that began in 2014, when the first tractor-trailer arrived in front of the Parish House. Since then, the annual event has continued to draw people from near and far. Each year, visitors choose pumpkins and gourds while sharing stories, building connections, and creating memories that become lasting traditions. They leave with more than they

planned to buy, having discovered a network that connects families along the Maine coast with Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi families who grow and harvest the pumpkins and gourds in the Southwest. Children gather around tables of craft supplies to decorate their pumpkins, working side by side and encouraging one another. Volunteers Needed for 9/11 Events

NATIONWIDE The Department of Veterans Affairs’ national cemeteries will host ceremonies and service events Friday, Sept. 11, to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and honor those who lost their lives. Public Law 107-89 established September 11 as Patriot Day and encourages Americans to remember and

honor the victims of the attacks. On Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. local time, more than 140 VA and state veterans cemeteries will host events that include opportunities for community volunteers to clean headstones and participate in other cemetery beautification activities. 47 Veterans and dependents who died during the attacks are

buried or memorialized in VA national cemeteries, mostly at the Calverton and Long Island National Cemeteries in New York. More than 16,000 Global War on Terror Veterans have been interred in VA national cemeteries nationwide. This year, VA’s National Cemetery Administration is collaborating with the nonprofit organization Carry The Load to host events across the country that allow volunteers to observe Patriot Day. “As our nation marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, VA national cemeteries offer a meaningful place to honor the courage and sacrifice of that day,” said VA Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Sam Brown. “I invite all Americans to join us at one of our participating cemeter-

ies as we honor and preserve the legacies of the victims, first responders, service members, and families forever changed by the 9/11 attacks.” “As we come together on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Carry The Load’s National Day of Service and Remembrance gives Americans a meaningful way to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost,” said Stephen Holley, president and co-founder of Carry The Load and a U.S. Navy SEAL Veteran. “Through service at national cemeteries across the country, we come together to honor the families, first responders, military members, and communities forever changed by 9/11 and carry their stories and sacrifices forward.” For more information and to register, visit https://tinyurl.com/ Sept11-25thAnniversary.

CAPE NEDDICK St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church has announced that a dedication ceremony for its new building addition will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, following the 10 a.m. service. The Rev. Stuart Dunnan and retired Bishop Gary Lillibridge will officiate at the brief liturgy. Food and refreshments will be served afterward at the oceanfront rectory. The public is invited to attend. Under the stewardship of Trustee John Seager, representing the church board, and Glenn

Farrell of YFI Custom Homes, the construction management team worked faithfully to bring the long-awaited addition to life. The new space includes a flower room, storage, two handicap-accessible bathrooms, and a prayer and meeting room suitable for wedding preparations, along with year-round plumbing, heating, and air conditioning. Several handicap-accessible parking spaces and an accessible entrance to the nave now make it easier for everyone to enter See ADDITION on page 5...

AI Workshop Weighs Benefits, Risks SOUTH BERWICK Generative AI tools can write, summarize information, and answer questions in seconds, but users may not always know how the technology reaches its answers—or when those answers are wrong. A workshop at the South Berwick Public Library will explore the basics of generative AI and large language models, including why AI can be an unreliable source of information, concerns about privacy and social impacts, and the environmental effects of data centers on local communities. The workshop also will

provide resources for people interested in disabling AI features on their devices or seeking alternatives. Library Director Melissa will lead the discussion for anyone curious about artificial intelligence or concerned about its growing presence in everyday life. The workshop will take place Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6 to 7 p.m. at the South Berwick Public Library, 27 Young St., South Berwick. The event is free, and registration is encouraged. The immediate grounds have also been upgraded with paving, walkway railings, and landscaping, guided by Karl Sanford. Great care was taken to preserve the charm and character of St. Peter’s. The new addition blends naturally with the existing church, leading many to comment that it looks as though it has always been there. The historic Gothic-style church has stood overlooking the ocean since 1897. It was commissioned by Nannie Dunlap Conarroe in memory of her husband, George Mecum Conarroe. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. St. Peter’s held an official opening for the new addition in July, which included tours, refreshments served by members of St. Peter’s Guild, and brief talks by Seager and Farrell, as well as Tammy Franz-Mallen and Mary Ferrell, who decorated the interior and donated most of the furnishings. The addition was estimated to cost about $1.2 million. Through careful planning and coordination, however, the project was completed under budget. WELLS Rece nt ly, Sa fe Have n received notice that the shelter had a major leak from an underground water pipe. The staff contacted area contractors and after receiving several estimates, wondered how they would afford the job. The water main had to be replaced, all the way from from Route 1 to the building. Safe Haven hired George Burr & Son to excavate and replace the line. They did a remarkable job at a very reasonable price, even reseeding the lawn afterward!

The shelter now looks better than ever, thanks to George Burr & Son for their fast and superior work. Two bonded six-year-old female kitties arrived to Safe Haven when their owner could no longer care for them. Both kitties were sad and stressed from the abrupt change, but they at least had each other to grieve with. Their lovely personalities and pretty looks make them both ideal for any family. KENNEBUNK Dear Potential Human, Hello! I’m Buttons, an avid bird watcher, classic introvert, and big fan of personal space. I enjoy quiet surroundings, gentle pets, and getting to know people at my own pace. Being picked up isn’t really my thing, but give me a little time and I may decide you’re worthy of my inner circle. Cats like me may need a little extra time to feel comfortable in a new home. A quiet space, predictable routine, and people who let us approach them on our own terms can go a long way. The little milestones—staying nearby, offering a slow blink, or asking for pets—can feel especially rewarding when you know they come from growing trust.

I’d be happiest in a quieter home with adults or older kids who appreciate an independent cat. Give me a good window for bird watching, cozy places to relax, and the freedom to choose when I’m ready for attention. I may not be an instant best friend, but with patience, I can become a wonderful, low-key companion. Patience is a very good start. Let me come to you. Keep things calm and don’t be offended if I need time to warm up. Gentle pets, a few treats, and a comfortable spot nearby are much more my speed than being scooped up for a cuddle. Give me the chance to make the first move, and you may be surprised by how much trust can grow.

KENNEBUNK – Elizabeth (Beth) Leighton Furlong, of Kennebunk, formerly of York, passed away September 3, 2026 in Scarborough. She was a proud, tenth-generation Maine native. The daughter of Frank G. and Esther Henley Leighton, Beth was born at the start of the Great Depression and grew up in the shadows of World War II while her older brothers served overseas—Verdi L. Leighton in the Pacific with the Marines and Frank G. Leighton Jr. in the Atlantic with the Merchant Marines. Until the shipyard claimed their homes during WWII, Beth’s family lived in Ferry Village, South Portland, surrounded by family members, including her beloved aunt and namesake, Elizabeth Henley Littlefield. Beth and her “Aunt Wee” shared an especially deep bond over more than 60 years. Her father was a renowned local musician, so she grew up in a household that valued music, everything from John Philip Sousa marches to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and church hymns. B e t h g r a du ated f r om South Portland High School (1948), Westbrook Junior College (1950), and the University of Maine (1952). While at UMaine, she met a handsome quarterback, Charles R. Furlong

(Chuck). They married in 1952, after Beth’s graduation. While Chuck finished his degree, they lived with and cared for legendary entomologist Dr. Edith M. Patch, the first woman scientist on UMaine’s faculty. The Furlongs maintained deep connections with the university throughout their lives. While at the UMaine, Beth and Chuck discovered Pleasant River Lake in Beddington. Chuck became so captivated by its remote beauty that he soon convinced his parents to purchase property there where they built a camp, which the family enjoyed for the next 60+ years. “Camp is my favorite place,” both Furlongs agreed. Within the first eight years of marriage, the Furlong family grew to include four daughters. While busy raising her family, Beth found time to sew, teach Sunday School, play in the bell choir, lead Girl Scout troops, and garden—a hobby that became a passion for both Beth and Chuck. In 1973, with two daughters in college, the family moved to West Dean, UK, where Chuck supervised AT&T’s trans-oceanic telephone cable project. The Furlongs loved living in the UK. Their happiest memories included attending the Trooping of the Colour and Ascot’s Royal Races. After returning to the U.S. in 1976, they lived in Whitehouse Station, NJ, until Chuck retired in 1985. They then returned to Maine and built a home in York to be near Beth’s brothers and their families. Retirement didn’t mean sitting still; the Furlongs continued their worldwide travels and camp stays. Beth’s gardens were featured in Old York Garden Club tours. She was also an accomplished artist, painting landscapes and tole painting antique tins. But above all else, Beth and Chuck were committed Christians, devoting their time and talents to First Parish Church in York. Until her death, Beth would say, “My favorite day is Sunday,” because she so enjoyed her church and its members. 40 years ago, Beth launched the annual Christmas festival, which continues to this day, and until last Christmas, she decorated wreaths and made partridge berry Christmas bowls for the holiday sale. She was predeceased by her husband, Chuck Furlong; her parents; her brothers and sistersin-law, Verdi (Evelyn) Leighton and Frank G. (Virginia) Leighton, Jr.; and her aunt, Elizabeth Littlefield. Beth is survived by her children: Cynthia (Mark) Reyn-

olds, Susanne (Greg) Stanley, Betsy (Randy) Waldheim, and Joy (Scott) Dalley; as well as her grandchildren: Jennifer (Peter) Holt, Hannah (Ray) Whitney, Charles (Allison) Reynolds, Benjamin Reynolds, Elizabeth Reynolds; great-grandchildren Levi, Landon, and Lincoln Whitney; Addison, Carys, and Asher Holt; and cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews. Not only was Beth blessed to live an extraordinary life, but she truly enjoyed life to the fullest. She will be sorely missed by family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in the First Parish Church in York on Sunday, September 13 at 3 p.m. The church’s website will livestream the service. A private burial will be held at First Parish Cemetery. D o n a t i o n s i n B e t h’s memory can be made to the general fund at First Parish Church, 180 York Street, York, ME 03909. ...LESLIE from page 11 Craig Goodman. Susan followed in her mother’s footsteps as a single woman in the workforce. She was a pioneer for women in business, entering the insurance industry—a male-dominated profession—as a young, 20-year-old woman. She never stopped working hard while raising her two children as a single mother, eventually becoming a successful business owner in that industry. Her business, Bragdon Insurance, was something Susan was deeply proud of. She was recognized in the industry at the national and state levels, her greatest accomplishments, but what she loved most was mentoring and teaching others in her profession. Susan curated and ran a woman-dominated office and had a great love for sharing her enthusiasm, knowledge, and leadership in the insurance industry. Susan’s family thanks the

staff at Avita of Wells for their excellent care, and Compassus Hospice for making her comfortable through the end of her life. Their care and love for Susan were unmatched and made the transition at the end of her life something special and deeply meaningful. A time of visitation to honor Susan will be held on Monday, September 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Trust. “This effort will help us protect more than 700 additional acres in the York community, strengthen our ability to care for our conserved lands, expand community access to nature, and invest in the long-term sustainability of the York Land Trust. It is an ambitious plan, but 40 years ago, so was the idea that a small local land trust could protect thousands of acres and become an integral part of this vibrant community. We have witnessed firsthand what is possible when this community comes together.” York Land Trust will host events and programs celebrating its history while looking ahead to the future. The events will include opportunities to learn more about the “From 40 to Forever” campaign and the organization’s vision for the next 40 years and beyond.

cox will present an entertaining program about a recent birding trip around the island of Jamaica. The program will be held in Mather Auditorium at Wells Reserve at Laudholm, 342 Laudholm Farm Road, and will also be livestreamed via Zoom. In March 2026, Maine Audubon led a birding tour to Jamaica, one of the hotbeds of avian endemism in the West Indies, with at least 28 species found there and nowhere else. The weeklong tour visited some of the best-known birding locations on the island, from the forests of Blue Mountains National Park to the feeders at Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and local sewage ponds. Five months before the trip, Hurricane Melissa made a “catastrophic landfall” in Jamaica, causing unprecedented

destruction. Hitchcox wi l l recount the trip, focusing on the birds, how they adapted to hurricane damage, and the culinary and cultural highlights. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Barn Gallery Opens Late-Summer Exhibitions OGUNQUIT The 2026 season of art exhibitions and programs by artists of the Ogunquit Art Association at Barn Gallery continues with its fall exhibitions, which include artist showcases featuring photographer Charles Laurier Dufour and photographer/ painter Annie Lemieux. The shows run through Monday, Oct. 12, with an opening reception Saturday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. and a Showcase Artists Talk Saturday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. Fall exhibitions will feature the Ogunquit Art Association Members’ Show, an exhibition with a wide variety of subjects and mediums; OAA Artist Showcases by Dufour and Lemieux; the Collectors’ Gallery, featuring ready-to-hang artwork no larger than 16 by 20 inches and priced no higher than $850; and an Invited New England Sculptors exhibition in the outdoor sculpture court. A lifelong Maine resident, Lemieux is drawn to the way

coastal light shifts across the seasons—the particular quality of a moment, she says, when words alone are not enough to express what one is feeling. Her work has been exhibited at the Saco Museum and recognized with awards, including the Juror’s Choice Award at KPT ArtHouse in Kennebunk. Lemieux holds a BFA and BS in art education from the University of Southern Maine and has pursued graduate work at Heartwood College of Art. Dufour creates fine art figure photography by placing nude models within Maine landscapes and seascapes, with a strong emphasis on composition, light, line, and form. His work ranges from the purely aesthetic to the deliberately evocative and narrative. At times, the figure becomes an extension of the earth itself; at others, an embodiment of human emotion inhabiting a place long after the moment has passed. Dufour’s work has been exhibited at Studio 53 in Boothbay Harbor and in a solo show at Rogue in

Kennerley, appointed municipal organist for the city of Portland in 2017, became steward of the famous Kotzschmar Organ, one of the best-known municipal pipe organs in the United States. He has performed at major venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Abbey and Washington National Cathedral. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ‘Springtime’ at the Playhouse: ‘The Producers’ Review By Krista Crommett Contributing Writer OGUNQUIT Much in alignment with the other mainstage shows that represent this season, “The Producers” combines entertainment with social commentary. It opened Aug. 27 at the Ogunquit Playhouse, and will run until Sept. 26. With a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, this wildly hilarious musical seems to be exactly what audiences need for this moment in time. Not only is this the 25th anniversary of the show’s Broadway debut, but it also coincides with Brooks’ 100th birthday (born June 28, 1926). For those unfamiliar with the Broadway show or film, the storyline follows a shy, nerdy accountant, Leo Bloom, played by the perfectly cast Dan DeLuca, as he tries to get his foot in the door as a Broadway producer. DeLuca has a special gift of tapping into earnest vulnerability, using both vocal tone and physicality to do so. His scenes with Max and Ulla (and his blue blanket) are particularly endearing. Bloom teams up with Max Bialystock, played by the inimitable Jason Kravits, to create a show unlike any other. Kravitz brings the necessary loud, silly,

and lovable traits to the role. There are a lot of performers to mention: all of the major players and supporting cast members are energetic and engaging. John Scherer as Roger De Bris possesses excellent comedic timing and a great voice. The song “Keep it Gay” had the audience in stitches. Scherer also uses a lot of physical comedy, and showcases quite a vast vocal range. John Rapson plays the eccentric Franz Liebkind. Franz (along with his coterie of birds) performs the comical number, “In Old Bavaria.” Stephanie Gibson is a frothy delight as Ulla, and her triple-threat talents (singing/acting/dancing) sparkle. Lastly, Nathan Lee Graham actually stopped the show more than once with the exaggerated and absurd portrayal of Carmen Ghia; when it seemed that whatever physical gesture or line that elicited laughter was over, it was followed with yet another. The audience fell into peals of laughter and/or applause during several of his scenes.

James Gray directs and choreographs this production at the Playhouse. Jesse Kissel is the music supervisor, and Brian Whitted serves as the music director. A few of the audience’s fa-

vorite songs include “Springtime for Hitler” and “We Can Do It.” Not only are the songs catchy and quippy, the choreography embodies that zany “Mel Brooks” style. “Along Came

Bialy” features particularly funny dancing that incorporates the Old Ladies and their walkers. Another notable number is “Prisoners of Love,” this time with batons as props. See PLAY on page 24...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Plein Air Celebration in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT The Town of Ogunquit’s Parks and Recreation committee presents one of Maine’s premier cultural happenings, now in its sixth year. The Perkins Cove Plein Air painting event returns Saturday, Sept. 12 with a rain date of Sunday, Sept. 13. More than 100 professional and amateur plein air painters will gather to capture the rugged coastal character of Perkins Cove and Ogunquit, known as “Beautiful Place by the Sea.” The area’s colorful history is intertwined with generations of plein air painters who, for more than a century, have chosen locations throughout the landmark cove and along Ogunquit’s famed Marginal Way to capture the quintessential beauty of the Maine coast. Plein air painting—painting outdoors—is a time-honored tradition in Ogunquit, where generations of artists, past and present, have contributed to what is collectively known as the Ogunquit Art Colony. For more than a century, artists have drawn, painted, sketched, and photographed the area’s picturesque landscape, from its rocky coastline, tidal river and Ogunquit Beach to Marginal Way, Perkins Cove’s harbor and its famed foot drawbridge. Perkins Cove will once again serve as the headquarters this year.

Hailed as the “largest one-day plein air event in New England,” the showcase draws thousands of art-loving visitors each year. The schedule begins with plein air painting from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout Ogunquit, along Marginal Way, and in and around Perkins Cove. Judging starts at 1 p.m. in Perkins Cove, with awards presented in both professional and amateur categories. The day culminates with the popular Wet Paint Sale, giving visitors the opportunity to take home a fresh-offthe-easel painting. Live music in Perkins Cove will add to the festivities, with Beau Dalleo performing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by Lisa Mills and The Ocean Ave Band from 1 to 4 p.m. Judges are Lyn Asselta for the professional painters category and Jonathan McPhillips for the amateur painters category. Asselta and McPhillips bring extensive national and international experience to the competition. Asselta’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, while McPhillips’ work has been featured through the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program and has earned numerous awards. Irish traditional music. Her dance studies have included work with Irish dancer Kieran Jordan, who has performed for Kennebunk audiences. Her musical career has taken her throughout the United States, Ireland and Canada. She has performed with the Young Tradition Vermont Touring Group and Youth Commission, as well as with the harp-and-fiddle duo In Given Time. Dan Faiella is a guitarist specializing in traditional Celtic music. He developed his skills as an accompanist through years of playing for New England contradances and Irish fiddlers. He has performed at venues and festivals around the country with numerous traditional music groups. Through years of solo and collaborative performances, he has developed an ability to adapt and combine these sounds within the distinctive capabilities of the guitar. Faiella is also an accomplished landscape painter. The concert is part of the long r unning “Concer ts in West K!” series, produced by Mousam River Music in collaboration with the Brick Store Museum. FINANCE & CAREER

Old York Awarded $10,000 from York River Stewardship Committee YORK Old York Historical Society (Old York) was recently awarded $10,000 from the York River Stewardship Committee. Old York was one of eight organizations awarded funds through the York River Stewardship Committee’s annual York River Watershed Grants Program. The program supports projects that help protect the York River and local watershed resources. This is Old York’s second consecutive year receiving support from the York River Stewardship Committee. Funds awarded in 2026 will allow Old York to continue its work restoring the McIntire Garrison’s Cider House by stabilizing the foundation and replacing the sill and floor planking. Additionally, new archaeological testing is being conducted inside the Cider House and

along its southern and eastern foundation walls. Archaeological findings will be shared in a public presentation later this year. The Cider House, a barn built in 1808, is part of the organization’s McIntire Garrison property. Old York acquired the McIntire property on Cider Hill Road in 2024. Built in 1713, the McIntire Garrison is Maine’s earliest-surviving, structurally-

unaltered house, and allows the museum to interpret the lives of York’s early settlers. The property was transferred to Old York by Malcolm (Mal) Davis, Daniel Davis, and James Davis, the heirs of Mary McIntire Davis, and 9th-generation descendants of Micum McIntire, a Scottish soldier who settled in York in the late 1660s. The two-acre property includes

the house, the barn known, and a carriage shed. The McIntire Garrison Cider House is an important historic watershed resource that is currently structurally compromised due to water infiltration. Stabilizing the building, while also understanding the site’s

history through architectural preservation and archaeological investigation, is critical to its survival and use as a future public education site with a focus on history and conservation. For more information, visit www.oldyork.org.

...PLAY from page 17 “The Producers” is easily the funniest musical a theater patron will ever see, period. Arguably one of the wittiest styles of comedy, the satire that fills the stage serves as something of a communal release valve, a chance to safely laugh at that which makes us nervous, anxious, or uncomfortable. Once Brooks gives us permission to do so (and he does as early on in the opening number), the audience is right there along for the ride. If laughter is the best medicine, go fill your prescription at the Ogunquit Playhouse before Sept. 26. For more information and tickets, Go to www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.

school to help, while younger children look forward to their annual visit to the Pumpkin Patch. After hearing the story of the pumpkins’ journey, the young ones eagerly search for the perfect pumpkin. Year after year matches are made, and a parade of happy children heads back to class. Clearly, pumpkin passion spans generations. One couple, celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary, noticed a young couple walking through hand in hand. “That was us on our first date,” they remarked. “And here we are, all these years later, still walking hand in hand, looking for just the right pumpkin!” A significant portion of the sales proceeds is returned directly to the farmers, helping support their families by providing access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for a more hopeful future. First Parish Church uses its portion of sales to support local, regional, and global missions and ministries. The Pumpkin Patch also serves as a gathering place in the heart of York, strengthening connections and bringing people together. Volunteer opportunities are available, including setting up the patch on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to bring friends, enjoy snacks, and be among the first to enjoy this year’s selection. For more information and to sign up, visit www.firstparishyork.net or call 207-351-2769.
