York Auto Show to Boost Local Athletics YORK The parking lots and fields of York High School will be transformed into a dreamscape for car aficionados of all stripes with the eighth annual York Auto Show. The event is expected to draw as many as 500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21. Car owners and visitors alike will have the chance to contribute to a good cause, with funds raised during the event going to the York High School Athletic Boosters. In
past years, the show has drawn more than 600 cars and raised more than $20,000, allowing the Boosters to replace aging equipment, contribute to the needs of coaches and athletes, support leadership training for
coaches and athletes and provide six senior student-athlete scholarships. With a new turf field, the York Athletic Boosters have been able to supplement project needs with support from the community.
The York Athletic Boosters’ mission is to create a community around sports. Twothirds of the student body at York High School participates in sports in some way, as athletes or managers. Those who
do not participate in sports also benefit from the community around the events that school athletics create. York is a “minimum receiver” school district. As such, it receives about 7% of the funding needed to support essential programs and services from the state, while other school departments in Maine receive up to 70%. Therefore, fundraising is essential to supporting the athletic programs. See AUTOS on page 15...

generative disorder in the United States, currently affecting more than one million. An increasing body of clinical research emphasizes that regular exercise and community connection are among the most effective tools for managing progressive motor and vocal symptoms. “People get diagnosed and go straight to the neurologist, and that’s key,” said event creator and Parkinson’s advocate Dan Tobin. “And medication is key. But you
can’t stop there. Research has shown that exercise and socialization can often do more to control symptoms than drugs do. I have an incurable and debilitating disease, but there’s a lot I can do to manage it.” The expo breaks away from traditional lecture-only formats in favor of active involvement in a wide range of classes, from Rock Steady Boxing and other research-tested Parkinson’s-specific therapies to yoga, Tai Chi,
singing, African drumming, and ping pong. The core philosophy is simple: “Exercise plus socialize equals the best ‘one-two punch’ against Parkinson’s.” This grassroots initiative is made possible through the support of regional healthcare leaders and sponsors, including Beth Israel Lahey Health Exeter Hospital, Senior Helpers, The YMCA, and the Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital Network. Admission, parking, and all interactive classes are free of charge. No pre-registration is required, though families and care partners are encouraged to arrive early to take advantage of the many vendors and information boots available during the event.
