First Parish UCC to Host Annual MLK Jr. Day Program KENNEBUNK First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church will host Kennebunk’s 24th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19. The event, “Living Your Purpose,” will feature guest speaker Dr. Lowell “Chris” Matthews (left photo), who lives, teaches, and volunteers in New Hampshire. “I will share my personal story of growing up in Tennessee [and now] living and working in New Hampshire,” Matthews said. “As we ref lect on Martin Luther King’s life, we

can find ways to embrace our own purpose – whether through activism, compassion, or simply making a positive impact in our daily lives.”

Matthews is the founder and executive director of Mokse Educational Services, a national nonprofit dedicated to stopping the stigma associated

with incarceration. He serves as a professor of business administration and management at Southern New Hampshire University and is known for his experiential teaching style, which encourages students to use the community as their classroom. He cur rently volunteers as board chair for the Endowment of Health, serves on the board of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, and mentors participants in the Equity Leaders Fellowship. Jazz pianist Kevin Preval (right photo) of Derry, NH, will open the program with piano

jazz selections. Preval is a music teacher and business owner who enjoys all styles of music, particularly jazz. A reception will follow the program. A $20 donation is requested, and admission is free for those 18 and younger. Proceeds will benefit Black History Month programming for schoolchildren in Portland. 7th Annual Cancer Snowshoe/Snow Walk Fundraiser SOUTH BERWICK The Outlook Tavern at the Links will once again be hosting the Annual Cancer Snowshoe/ Snow Walk Fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 31, now in its seventh – and final – year. Last year’s event saw over 100 snowshoers, with roughly 250 guests attending the luncheon afterwards – a packed house! The fundraiser was a huge success, raising over $14,000 for breast cancer research and support. This year, all proceeds raised for the event will once again go to benefit the Mass General Cancer Center at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital. Breast cancer survivor AnnMarie Sacca is once again doing her part by organizing the annual

fundraiser. For $70, snowshoers will walk the front nine holes, followed by lunch and entertainment in The Red Barn afterwards. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the walk begins at 12 a.m. There is also a $30 “lunch only” option for those who do not wish to walk but want to participate in the fundraiser. At 1 p.m., the Red Barn opens its doors, offering entertainment such as a photo booth, caricature drawings, a cash bar, raffles, lunch and music by DJ Timmy C. Raffle prizes include tickets to local sporting events,

wine tastings, car wash packages and recreation packages, among others. So swap out those golf shoes for snowshoes – or snow boots – and help the fight against breast cancer. Sacca recommends pur-

chasing ahead of time, as the event sells out quickly. Private donations towards the fundraiser are always encouraged as well; contact information is provided below. The Links at Outlook Golf

Course is located at 310 Portland Street in South Berwick. For more information and to purchase tickets or make a donation, contact AnnMarie Sacca at 603343-3730 or saccaannmarie@ comcast.net.
