Civil War Encampment Returns to Fort McClary KITTERY POINT History will come alive at Fort McClary this weekend as the annual Civil War Encampment returns to the historic Kittery Point fort. The encampment will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort McClary on Route 103. Visitors can explore authentic military camps, meet living historians, and watch demonstrations depicting aspects of life during the Civil War. The event also will feature historic artillery demonstrations, along with stories about the experiences of soldiers and civilians during the war.

Fort McClary has a long military history. Coastal defenses were established at the site in the late 1600s to protect the mouth of the Piscataqua River

and the approaches to Portsmouth Harbor. The site became a U.S. fort in 1808 and was expanded in the 1840s, including construction of its distinctive

granite blockhouse in 1844. Fort McClary was actively manned by Maine troops during the Civil War, although it saw little action. The garrison included members of the Kittery Artillery Company and the Maine State Guard. Among those who served there was Maine native and Vice President Hannibal Hamlin. During the summer of 1864, Hamlin, who was born in Paris, ME, voluntarily served as a private and company cook at Fort McClary, despite holding the nation’s second-highest office. A major expansion of the fort began in 1863 but was never completed—only the seawalls and one landward cannon bas-

tion were finished. Advances in artillery soon made masonry forts like Fort McClary more vulnerable to newer, more powerful weapons. Federal funding for such projects was withdrawn in 1867, leaving Fort McClary with few cannon positions. Granite blocks from the unfinished expansion remain visible at the fort today. Fort McClary was eventually decommissioned in 1918. Maine acquired most of the property in 1924, and it was subsequently operated as a park. The fort was added to the National Register of Historic See FORT on page 6...

York FD Hosts 110th Annual Field Day, Parade & Muster YORK The York Fire Department will host its 110th annual Parade and Muster on Saturday, Aug. 15, continuing a beloved local tradition that celebrates the community’s connection to the fire service. The family-friendly event will feature a parade, traditional firefighter muster, children’s games, food, and trophies awarded to winning muster teams. This year’s Miss Flame, Kaitlyn Hatfield-Landry, granddaughter of longtime York Beach firefighter Mark Gay, will also be featured during the festivities. LanternFest Keeps Community Spirit Shining SOUTH BERWICK The 15th annual LanternFest will return to South Berwick Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Spring Hill, 117 Pond Road. Billed as “a magical night of music and festivities,” the event includes a parade of light through the field and the launching of water lanterns that float across Knights Pond. Jewet t, a 19th-cent ur y novelist, poet, and short-story writer, was born in South Berwick, where her former home, the Sarah Orne Jewett House, remains a landmark in the community. She is best known for her novel “The Country of the Pointed Firs” and for her contributions to American literary regionalism.

Local Town Hall Renovation Selected for NAWIC Tour SOUTH BERWICK The Town of South Berwick’s ongoing Town Hall renovation project has been selected as the site of a special industry tour hosted by the New Hampshire chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The tour will highlight the contributions of women in the construction industry and skilled trades. NAWIC is a professional association that supports and advances women in the construction industry through education, networking, leadership development, and professional growth opportunities. The tour, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, will bring NAWIC members and other industry professionals to the project site to observe the renovation and learn more about the planning, collaboration, and craftsmanship involved in the work. The selection ref lects the

scale and complexity of the renovation, as well as the collaboration among the many professionals involved. Over the past year, South Berwick residents have watched the building undergo a major renovation requiring careful planning, coordination, and flexibility. The project brings together a wide range of expertise, including architects, engineers, project managers, consultants, contractors, tradespeople, and Town staff. Bipartisan Group Introduce Bill to Boost Weatherization Aid WASHINGTON U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and three Senate colleagues have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at expanding the federal Weatherization Assistance Program, which helps improve home energy efficiency and reduce household energy costs. The Weatherization Assistance Program Improvements Act would expand support for home weatherization projects, including air sealing, window replacement, ventilation improvements, and other energy-saving upgrades. The legislation is intended to improve public health, increase energy efficiency, and help more households lower utility costs. “The Weatherization Assistance Program is a proven, costeffective way to permanently decrease energy usage while reducing low-income Americans’ energy bills,” said Collins. “This bipartisan bill would help build on the significant investments we have secured for the Weatherization Assistance Program so that more Americans are able to make improvements that will allow them to affordably heat their homes.” Since 1976, the Weatherization Assistance Program has helped more than 7.4 million

The free event will include live beekeeping demonstrations, an educational presentation, a honey tasting competition, pollinator plant and gardening information, a summer craft market, and activities for children. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the upgrades save participating households an average of $372 annually on energy bills. The bill would establish a Weatherization Readiness Fund to help address structural issues that prevent some homes from receiving weatherization improvements. It would also increase the amount of funding available per home to account for rising labor and material costs and raise the funding limit for renewable energy upgrades. “NASCSP is thrilled to support the Weatherization Assistance Program Improvements Act. This legislation paves the way toward decreasing energy burdens and improving the health and safety of low-income households, while supporting more than 8,500 highly skilled jobs across the country,” said Cheryl Williams, executive director of the National Association for State Community Services Programs. As of August 2026, the Weatherization Assistance Program Improvements Act (S. 1342) remains introduced and pending in Congress. It forms a core component of a broader, active legis-

KWD Imposes Mandatory Level 3 Conservation Restrictions KITTERY The Kittery Water District implemented mandatory Level 3 water conservation restrictions beginning Monday, Aug. 17, because of declining water supply levels and continued dry conditions. The restrictions apply to all Kittery Water District customers and will remain in effect until further notice. Under the restrictions, landscape watering will be limited to

two days per week. Customers at odd-numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Thursdays, while those at even-numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays and Fridays. Watering is permitted only between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., and landscape watering is prohibited on Saturdays and Sundays. The district is also encouraging customers to suspend nonessential outdoor water use whenever possible and reduce overall

consumption. Recommendations include repairing leaks, running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads, and avoiding unnecessary outdoor water use. The restrictions are mandatory and violations are subject to enforcement under the Kittery Water District Terms & Conditions. A first violation will result in a written warning. A second violation carries a $100 fine, while a third violation carries a $500 fine and possible discontinuance of water service. According to the district, reducing water use will help protect the community’s water supply and maintain adequate reserves for essential needs and fire protection. Late-Summer Plants That Help Maine Pollinators STATEWIDE As summer begins to wind down, Maine gardens can continue to provide important food sources for bees and other pollinators. Planting a mix of lateblooming f lowers, especially native species, can help support pollinator populations while adding color and interest to the landscape into the fall. For Maine gardeners, several plants provide nectar and pollen during late summer and early fall, when many spring and early summer blooms have faded. New England Aster New England aster is one of the best late-season choices for pollinator gardens. The nat ive peren n ia l produces purple, pink, or blue daisy-like flowers from late summer into fall, providing nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators when many other plants have finished blooming.

Goldenrod is a native latesummer and fall bloomer that provides an important food source for bees and other pollinators. Despite a common misconception, goldenrod is not a major cause of seasonal allergies; ragweed pollen is typically responsible for fall allergies. The plant thrives in a variety of Maine landscapes and helps support pollinator activity later in the growing season. Bee Balm Bee balm, also known as Monarda, is a popular perennial that attracts bees, butterf lies, and hummingbirds. Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS A cat lover sent Safe Haven an S.O.S. regarding one of two strays she had been feeding. Competition can get fierce when strays compete for food, and the male tiger cat saw the tiny kitten as a threat to his food supply. He routinely attacked her. The kitten was seen limping and missing tufts of hair. She also had several bite wounds that had developed abscesses. Safe Haven’s newest trapper stepped in to help. And she did it, successfully trapping the desperate little female on her own. It was a milestone for Amanda, who had successfully trapped her first stray. It also meant Safe Haven could provide the care the injured kitten needed. Taken to the quarantine

room at the shelter, she was quickly named Ryver. After many trips to the vet, Ryver began her journey of healing. At first, Ryver had to wear a baby onesie to protect her wounds. Imagine Safe Haven’s volunteers seeing an adorable kitten in a onesie for the first time. Ryver received plenty of baby talk, along with abundant cuddles, ear scratches and treats. Ryver is now doing great at Safe Haven. But it’s time for the 1-year old to find a home. Ryver is all black with big eyes and a personality that shows renewed confidence. Her personality has evolved into a relaxed, happy cat.

Safe Haven is seeking volunteers to help with clothing donations at the thrift shop. The shelter needs help sorting, pricing, and tagging clothing donations, as well as restocking racks, and keeping the upstairs pricing area tidy. The organization rescues many cats and kittens from rural areas, but its quarantine room is often full. Without available foster homes, some cats may have to remain outdoors in unsafe conditions. Safe Haven is also seeking a foster home for a mother cat and her kittens. The mother is friendly, but the kittens are still frightened and vulnerable. They are currently living outdoors, where they face threats from traffic and predators. Anyone who can provide a foster home is asked to text Donna at 207-351-7323. Safe Haven’s shop is offering 75% off clothing and 50% off shoes and books from Saturday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 23. Eleve Ballet Academy Brings ‘Ballet for Everyone’ ELIOT Katie McIntire founded Eleve Ballet Academy in 2021 with a goal of making classical ballet instruction accessible to students of all ages and abilities. This fall, the Maine native is bringing the academy’s approach to the Seacoast community with classes offered at four Four Bodies Community Wellness Center, 28 Levesque Drive #9, Eliot. Eleve Ballet Academy’s 11-week fall session begins Sept. 3 and will offer classical ballet classes for children and adults. The classes are designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of ballet while developing technique, confidence, creativity, and a sense of community. McIntire, who serves as the academy’s founder, director, and instructor, has extensive experience teaching students at beginner, intermediate, advanced, and pre-professional levels. She has taught at Elysium Dance Project in Rollinsford, NH, Alpha & Omega Dance Academy in Fayetteville, NC, Elite Academy of Dance in Southern Pines, NC, and through private instruction at performing arts and fitness studios throughout the East Coast. Her training encompasses classical ballet, pointe, chore-

ography, strength conditioning, and performance coaching. McIntire’s background in music, dance, and physical fitness informs a broad approach to arts education and allows her to work with students across a range of ages and abilities. McIntire established Eleve Ballet Academy with a vision of creating a welcoming environment where students can learn ballet, connect with classmates, and build confidence. Weekly Recipe: Zucchini Bread A great way to enjoy summer’s bounty! Yields one 9×5-inch loaf.

Ingredients 1-3/4 cups all-purpose ﬂour, spooned and leveled 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1-1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 cup vegetable oil, or melted coconut oil 1/2 cup packed light or dark brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, sour cream, or Greek yogurt 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups zucchini, shredded Optional: 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, chopped nuts, raisins, etc.

Instructions Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a large bowl until thoroughly combined.

Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk oil, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, applesauce, and vanilla together until combined. Whisk in zucchini. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Gently stir or whisk until just combined; do not overmix. Fold in optional addins. Batter should seem slightly thick. Spread batter evenly into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55-70 minutes, covering loosely with foil about halfway through. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean with zero raw batter. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Swinging into Summer: 16th Annual Jazz Concert Returns to St. Peter’s CAPE NEDDICK The 16th Annual Jazz Concert at the historic St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick will take place Sunday, Aug. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. The New Legacy Swing Band will return this year to perform classic swing tunes made famous by some of the era’s most influential big bands. The performance will feature faithful re-creations of musical numbers associated with jazz greats Count Basie, Duke Elling-

ton, Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, and others. The band’s 17 musicians are veteran players with decades of experience performing in traditional big bands and smaller jazz groups throughout the region. The band has played sold-out concerts at Jonathan’s Ogunquit, the Prescott Park Arts Festival, the “Friday Night Live” concert series in Dover, NH, and various community events along the Seacoast. All proceeds go to the

church’s Preservation Fund. St. Peter’s by the Sea was built in 1897 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Once again, this year’s concert will be held on the oceanfront lawn behind the church. Attendees are encouraged to

bring blankets or lawn chairs. Wine and cheese from The Beachmere Inn are included with admission. Adm ission is $ 4 0 per person at the door. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the church.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ‘Intertwined’ at the Wells Reserve WELLS The Wells Reserve at Laudholm presents “Intertwined,” a new exhibition in the Coastal Ecology Center Gallery that brings together the work of artists Christine Andrews and Sherie Dowsett to explore the relationships among forests, wildlife, and the landscapes they share. The exhibition runs from Aug. 19 to Nov. 20. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. Andrews lives in Deering, NH, and is an ecological artist and educator who draws inspiration from her deep connection to New Hampshire’s forests and natural areas. After initially pursuing art in college, Andrews’ curiosity led her to earn a biology degree. Her fieldwork, which included tracking mammals and studying forest ecosystems, continues to inform her artistic practice. Andrews’ work has been featured in juried exhibitions and fairs across New Hampshire and Maine. She was selected as a guest artist for the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen

Fair and is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association. Dowsett is a watercolor artist raised in England and based in New Hampshire. She is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association and has exhibited throughout New England. Her work has received awards from The Nature Conservancy, the Plymouth Center for the Arts, the Photographic Society of America, and NHAA. She is represented by Kennedy Gallery in Portsmouth, NH. Her work focuses exclusively on animals, birds, and landscapes, intentionally excluding human elements. Both artists share a deep engagement with the natural world and begin their work with careful observation of the landscapes and species around them. Their approaches are complementary: Andrews attends to the structure and stories embedded in the land, while Dowsett focuses on the wildlife that moves through and depends on these environments. Andrews creates mixedmedia landscapes built over col-

laged trail maps and layered with vibrant inks, while Dowsett uses both bold and precise watercolor brushstrokes to create work that feels at once expansive and intimate. The exhibit will also include interpretive panels that provide ecological context drawn from New England’s natural habitats, with particular reference to the Wells Reserve. By pairing art with ecological insight, “Inter-

twined” invites viewers to slow down, look closely and recognize the complex networks that sustain life in these places.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Library to Host AI Workshop YORK York Public Library will host “Beyond the Basics: Using AI to Make Ever yday Life Easier with UNH Professor Paul Gilson” on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m. The free program will explore practical applications of artificial intelligence and provide an overview of how the technology is being used in everyday situations. The workshop will focus on how large language models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, work and how they are being used in everyday applications. Participants will learn about potential uses for these tools, including drafting letters, organizing events, creating spreadsheets, developing simple websites, and assisting with other tasks. The workshop will include examples of how artificial intelligence tools may be used for tasks such as drafting correspondence, planning meetings, promoting a hobby or small business, and organizing information. The program will also address how AI tools work, their limitations, and the importance of evaluating the information they provide. Designed for those who want to better understand artificial intelligence, the session will discuss how to ask questions effectively and assess AI-generated responses. Participants are encouraged to bring a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to follow along during the interactive demonstrations. No technical background or prior AI experience is required. The program will be led by Paul Gilson, a finance professor at the University of New Hampshire’s Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, where he directs the finance major. Before joining UNH, Gilson worked as an accountant with KPMG in London and Atlanta before earning a Ph.D. in mathematical finance. His current work examines the use of artificial intelligence tools and focuses on helping people un-

derstand their capabilities and limitations. Outside the classroom, he hosts “Button Factory Soundcheck,” a post-punk and new wave radio show on WSCA 106.1 FM. State Approves York Hospital Joining MaineHealth YORK York Hospital and MaineHealth announced that state regulators have approved York Hospital’s plan to join MaineHealth, allowing the organizations to begin the next steps in their affiliation process. The approval follows a review through the state’s Certificate of Need process and by the Attorney General’s Office. The organizations said the affiliation is intended to preserve local access to care while providing additional resources and

services for the York community. The transaction is expected to close Oct. 1. “For generations, York Hospital has been a trusted community institution defined by compassionate, patient-centered care,” said Dr. Patrick Taylor, chief executive officer of York Hospital. “This approval allows us to move forward with a partner who shares our commitment to ensuring patients in our region continue to receive excellent care close to home. Marshwood High School to Host Heart Screening Event SOUTH BERWICK Marshwood High School will host a community heart screening event Monday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., of fer ing elect rocardiog ram (ECG) screenings for students and young adults ages 10 to 25 through the nonprofit organization Who We Play For. ECG screenings help iden-

tify certain heart conditions that may not be detected during a routine physical examination. Each ECG takes approximately five minutes to complete and is interpreted by a board-certified pediatric cardiologist. “Protecting our students goes beyond the game,” said Rich Buzzell, the district athletic administrator. “Their health,

FINANCE & CAREER Playhouse Raises Over $3M at Sold-Out Gala Benefit

OGUNQUIT Og u nq u it P layhou se raised more than $3 million during its sold-out annual Gala Benefit Monday, Aug. 10, providing transformational support for the theater’s Next Century Campaign. The memorable evening began with an outdoor cocktail reception before guests gathered inside the historic Playhouse for an exclusive concert by two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster. In a surprise that brought the audience to its feet, Foster welcomed fellow Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman to the stage for an unforgettable duet—the first time the pair has performed together in a live concert setting since costarring in “The Music Man” revival on Broadway in 202223. Proceeds will support the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation’s Next Century Campaign. The playhouse is preparing for a major renovation and expansion project that will

add a new state-of-the-art theater with expanded production capabilities, improved patron amenities, and enhanced accessibility. The project is designed to preserve the character, charm, and legacy that have defined the playhouse experience for nearly 100 years. “We are over whelmed by the incredible generosity of our community tonight,” said Managing Director Deborah Warren. “Having artists of Sutton Foster’s caliber grace our stage to support our vision for the future of Ogunquit Play-

Maine Community Colleges Awarded $5M SBA Grant AUGUSTA, ME Maine’s community colleges received a $5 million federal grant Wednesday, Aug. 5, to provide specialized shortterm training that prepares students for jobs at the state’s small and midsize manufacturers. The grant is part of a $50 million U.S. Small Business Administration program supporting technical schools and community colleges across the nation. In Maine, the $5 million in funding will expand access to eight existing courses in fabrication, machining, welding, blueprint reading, quality assurance, manufacturing, and advanced manufacturing technologies at Central Maine Community College, Southern Maine Community College, and York County Community College. More than 600 students will receive the no-cost training, offered on a rolling basis approximately every four to

eight weeks. “This grant allows us to take training that’s already proven itself with Maine’s largest defense manufacturers and put it directly into the hands of the small shops and suppliers that keep that supply chain running,” said Maine Community College System Chief Workforce Development Officer Dan Belyea. “These are the employers who often don’t have the time or capacity to build their own training pipeline, and this project meets them where they are.”

The short-term workforce training classes covered by the grant were developed by Maine Community College System’s Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce in collaboration with the Maine Defense Industry Alliance to increase the number of skilled workers for high-demand defense industry jobs in Maine. Courses include Technician Training, Advanced Manufacturing Technician Training, Computer Numerical Control Precision Machining, MIG and TIG Welding, Foundations of Machining, Maritime Pipefitting and Marine Machine Mechanic, Industrial Welding, and Introduction to Quality Assurance. Maine’s smaller manufacturing firms are a critical part of the supply chain that sustains the industry’s major employers, such as General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and Pratt & Whitney. AARP Commits $136K to Communities Across Maine STATEWIDE AARP announced that 15 organizations throughout Maine will receive 2026 Community Challenge grants. The grants, marking the program’s 10th anniversary, are part of an $8.3 million commitment by AARP to fund 750 quick-action projects nationwide. The projects will support improvements to public spaces, transportation, housing, digital connectivity, disaster preparedness, and other local priorities in communities across the country. “Com mu n it ie s a c r os s Maine are eager for solutions that boost mobility, connection, and quality of life,” said AARP Maine State Director Noël Bonam. “AARP Maine is in your corner. Thanks to Community Challenge grants, we’re empowering residents to implement impactful improvements that make a sizeable difference.” Since 2017, the A AR P Communit y Challenge has awarded $682,850 through 96 grants in Maine to nonprofit organizations and local government entities across the state. Grant projects will be funded in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Projects across Maine reflect growing demand for solutions that help residents stay connected, safe, and independent. In southern Maine, the projects include: Berwick for a Lifetime: This project will complete an accessible boardwalk, add benches and tables, and install a small storage shed. Sea Dogs to Host Women in Sports Night PORTLAND, ME The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will host Women in Sports Night Friday, Aug. 21, at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field. The evening will begin with a pregame panel on the field behind home plate from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. Panelists will include Sea Dogs Director of Broadcasting Emma Tiedemann; Lani Silversides, founder of Strong Girls United and a former Division I athlete; Jennifer Kessy, an Olympic silver medalist in volleyball; and Maddie Chaput, a University of Maine track and field athlete. Tiedemann made history again Aug. 5, 2025, when she joined Alanna Rizzo to form the first all-female broadcast booth to call an entire Red Sox game on NESN. Tiedemann returned to the NESN booth for a third time Aug. 5, 2026, when she and Rizzo teamed up again to call the Red Sox game against the Chicago White Sox. The talking bobblehead features Tiedemann’s call of a Sea Dogs combined no-hitter on July 23, 2023. The pregame ceremonies will also include recognition of women on the Sea Dogs staff and the introduction of the “Starting Nine,” highlighting eight women and one sports organization that have helped create opportunities for the next generation of women in sports. Each woman will throw out a ceremonial first pitch and receive a team jersey. Those recognized include:
