Old Village Inn Grants Wishes this Holiday Season by Ethan Bukowiec Staff Reporter OGUNQUIT Since the Maine Chapter of Make-A-Wish opened in 1992, the cause has granted over 1,100 wishes to children with lifethreatening medical conditions. Since 2009, Dean Goodman and the staff at the Old Village Inn in Ogunquit have helped grant twoand-a-half wishes. The Old Village Inn’s yearly Make-A-Wish Christmas Ball fundraiser started in 2009, and has raised about $16,000 in the last four years. For year five, Goodman hopes to raise $6,000, which is enough to grant a whole wish. The Inn will open its doors on Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. for a night of good food, libations, music and

Over the past three decades, the award-winning, familyowned restaurant known for its hallmark hospitality, speedy service, and hearty home cooking has served more than six million customers. It has received various accolades and made television appearances on programs such as the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” the NBC
“Today Show,” and the Bostonbased “Phantom Gourmet” show. In 2010, the Maine diner was the recipient of the Maine Restaurant Association’s Restaurateur of the Year Award. Both Senator Collins and Representative Chase were delighted to have the opportunity to acknowledge Mr. Henry for his years of success as a small business owner in Maine.

Rebecca Leaming, who is the Development Manager at Make-A-Wish Maine, has worked with the Old Village Inn for the past two years and has become privy to the group’s willingness to make a difference. “Dean and his staff are very passionate about raising the money for Maine children with life-threatening medical conditions,” Leaming said. “They put in a lot of time and effort into the event, which is evident by their continued yearly success and sold out event. This will mark the first year that the Inn will hold a 50/50 raffle, and Goodman says it has been all hands on deck to collect all the prizes to raffle. “Customers and staff have pitched in to help with the fundraising,” said Goodman. “Everyone in the town has done something.” The first three years that Old Village Inn raised funds for Make-A-Wish Maine yielded an average of about $3,000 each year, but the dedication of Goodman and his staff allowed them to raise the full $6,000 needed to
by Susan Richardson Contributing writer KITTERY Town Manager Nancy Colbert Puff’s team-player attitude was apparent during a recent discussion of her new role in Kittery’s town government, and it’s a perspective that comes naturally. Colbert Puff played basketball and softball in college and loves tennis as well. “I’m a former athlete,” she said. Her team spirit makes her quick to acknowledge the other players in Kittery’s leadership positions. She said she is still at the stage of listening to department heads in terms of goal-setting, adding, “They’re educating me.” Named as town manager in October, Colbert Puff officially took office on Nov. 12.

The York Community Service Association, which provides general assistance to low-income families in York, will receive 100 percent of event donations. St. George’s Church and York Hospital have each provided generous financial support to defray costs associated with producing the event, and A Perfect Move, Sunbelt Rentals, Infinite Imaging of York, and several anonymous donors are also providing support. The “Lessons and Carols” service has historically been community-based, and York organizers underscore this approach. Speakers are chosen to represent different facets of the local community coming together: youth, government, military, businesses, charities, etcetera. This year’s speakers will include Chief Douglas Bracy of the York Police Department. Guests from all denominations are encouraged to attend.

team is truly committed to serving the public,” she said. Colbert Puff’s route to public service began as a child growing up in Lawrence, Mass., where the mills instilled her passion for historic preservation.
She completed her undergraduate work in history at Harvard and earned a Master of Science degree in historic preservation from the University of Vermont. Her focus was on the town planning aspect of preservation. “I was more interested in how post-World War II development has proceeded in a more
car-oriented manner,” she said. Colbert Puff held several positions as a planner before becoming the director of planning and development for Newburyport, Mass., where she had the opportunity to participate in the management side of town government. The experience was instrumental in shifting her

focus from planning to administration. “If you have a role in how resources are allocated, then you might have a greater role in impacting people’s lives,” she explained. She first made the transition to town administration as the town administrator of Boylston, Mass., and then as chief of staff in Methuen, Mass. Colbert Puff’s previous experience living in Kittery for seven years—she has lived in Massachusetts for the past five and will be returning to Kittery—contributes to her deep appreciation for the town and commitment to serving its people. She is very interested in making government as efficient and effective as possible. Energy efficiency is a topic she is particularly enthusiastic about, and she views renewable energy projects, such as solar panel systems, as having the potential to significantly save on budget costs long-term. “In the end it is simply paying less for your energy,” she stated. Colbert Puff is equally clear about the many assets Kittery offers to visitors, naming “unbelievable natural resources,” great shopping opportunities, the Foreside district, and the friendliness of the town’s residents, as reasons people will continue to come to Kittery. “I love being back on the coast,” she said.

Winners Announced as Ogunquit’s Celebrations Draw to a Close OGUNQUIT It has been a busy holiday season for the town of Ogunquit, which wrapped up its Christmas by the Sea festivities last weekend. Highlighting the weekend was the Christmas Parade, which featured ornate floats and fun for everyone. Receiving awards for their seasonally-decorated floats were the Ogunquit Playhouse, which earned first place for their Dr. Seuss themed float, Maine Street, which took home second place for
a Snow Queen inspiration, and the Five-O rounded out placements with a third place finish for an Alvin and the Chipmunksthemed float. Earning honorable mention for their designs were Perkins Cove Lobster Pound, ReMax, Clay Hill Farm, Moon Over Maine and the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. While many businesses were busy decorating floats for the parade, other businesses and residents were preparing for the Ogunquit Christmas Decorating
...WISH from page 1 in advance and all of their hard work pays off.” Last year, the money raised by The Old Village Inn granted a wish for a young boy in York. Goodman says the gratitude shown by those families affected by The Inn’s good deeds is what keeps them working harder and harder. Certainly, a great deal of work goes towards making Old Village Inn’s Christmas Ball a success, but all of the work done now will lead to the play that comes on Dec. 21. Goodman expects 100 people to attend the event which will feature a local band, On Tap, and prizes that range from a free pizza to a bottle of wine or a flat-screen TV. “We try and make it fun for everyone,” Goodman explained. “We like to have it set up so that people can show up in a tuxedo or in a sweatshirt and jeans and have the same great time.” And while it is the work done by the team at Old Village Inn that makes this successful annual event possible, Goodman is quick to credit his surrounding community for the help they lend. “We don’t ask for a lot, but the people in this town always give us what they can,” Goodman said. “This town does a lot for people in need on any level.” While Goodman likes to direct the praise in other directions, Leaming and the staff at Make-A-Wish Maine are sure to
Landmark Restaurant Location Up for Sale WELLS The Town of Wells is in a unique situation. After four decades, the highly successful Lord’s Harborside Restaurant at Wells Harbor has closed, with the town purchasing the building in December. Wells had leased the land to a longtime owner who decided not to renew his lease, and it only made sense for the town to purchase the building so that it could lease out the land and building together to a new tenant. The Town of Wells is seeking proposals from bidders to lease and operate an existing restaurant building located at 352 Harbor Road in Wells. The town owns the land at the harbor and leases the boatyard and the restaurant to commercial enterprises. The restaurant has been a major attraction to locals and tourists visiting Wells, with its beautiful views of the marsh and
harbor. The Harborside neighbors the Wells Harbor Park and Webhannet River Boatyard and marina. The existing restaurant has an approximate gross lease area of 9,924 square feet with a useable area of 6,556 square feet of interior space for dining area, kitchen, storage, office, restrooms, and gift shop. The restaurant was operated as a seasonal business which was highly successful. Wells is undertaking a Re-
quest for Proposals and holding a mandatory walk-through of the restaurant for those interested at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20 and at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23. A Proposal packet is available from the Town Manager’s Office or from the town’s website, www.wellstown.org under Requests for Bids/Proposals. It is looking to be a big hit and even more so at his concert on Valentine’s Day at Jonathan’s Ogunquit. “After the first album, I realized that there was millions of people out there just like me,” Campbell says. “I was shocked at all the responses I was getting on Twitter and Facebook from people who went through the same things I was going through. I realized we’re all in this together. There are more people in this world that are the same than different. So I figured out that I could just write my songs, and there’s going to be somebody out there that relates.” The Feb. 14 performance will be Campbell’s first appearance at Jonathan’s Ogunquit. It will be quite a night to celebrate at Jonathan’s. Enjoy a special night of Country Music with Craig Campbell on Valentine’s Day at Jonathan’s Ogunquit. Advance tickets start at $27.50. Combined York church choirs warm up for last year’s historic first-ever “Lessons and Carols” community Christmas service. This year’s event will take place on Dec. 22 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in York.
At this time of great joy for the birth of our Lord, we wish you and your family a holiday season filled with his blessings.
From all your friends at
Starkey Ford Route 1 York, Maine
“It is a beautiful experience to be genuinely connected with so many engaged hearts,” said Jud Knox, CEO of York Hospital, reflecting on his role as a reader and an attendee at last year’s service. Father Craig Burlington will again officiate at this year’s Dec. 22 service with The Reverend Aaron Perkins, Deacon at Trinity. First Parish’s Wendell Purrington will direct the combined church choirs from Trinity, St. George’s, and First Parish Congregational. Trinity’s choral director and organist Terrie Harman will accompany and perform on organ, with St. George’s pianist, Isaac Everett, and choir director/organist, John Sullivan, also contributing on keyboard. Solos will be performed by Michelle Poppleton Chumsae, Richard Leigh, Todd Richard and William Wieting. The “Lessons and Carols” service, first presented in England in 1918, is an Anglican Christmas tradition rich with choral music. The format of the service, now performed and broadcast to millions worldwide, features nine short Bible readings beginning in Genesis on the birth of Jesus interspersed with Christmas carols and hymns. A holiday sing-along with hot cocoa and cookies will immediately follow the service at neighboring St. George’s Church. Because Trinity will be heated temporarily before and during the service, all attendees should dress warmly.

Kennebunk Students Honored for Doing the Right Thing
KHS students were recently honored by Officer Mark Carney for their ability to demonstrate exemplary character and service to the school and community.
KENNEBUNK The Do the Right Thing Award was created this year by Kennebunk School Resource Officer Mark Carney in collaboration with the Kennebunk Police Department. During each quarter of the school year, teachers are asked to nominate students who demonstrate exemplary character and/or service to the school and community. The students and their par-
Obituaries Janet Perkins, 79 OGUNQUIT - Janet Perkins slipped away from us on Tuesday Dec. 10, after a brief illness. She will be remembered by a host of friends as a unique and extraordinary person. She was charmingly eccentric, brilliant, had a delightfully wry sense of humor and a steadfast love of books. An avid reader, Janet spent a great deal of time hiding from the world in her fortress of hundreds of books piled high. Janet grew up in Ogunquit and attended Wells High School. THANK YOU ST. JUDE:
Our goal is to offer the finest care to families in locally-owned funeral homes. We provide conveniently located, modern, well-furnished and inviting homes. Our family-centered approach is to care and provide an experience which is very personal. We offer lifelong memories for the families we service.
ents are invited to a pizza party where Officer Carney and Chief MacKenzie present them with their awards. Pizzas are donated by Toppings Pizza of Kennebunk. Students who were honored for doing the right thing during the first quarter were Colin Gross, Amanda LaddWelch, Hannah Pepin, Austin Ramsdell, Kyra Schwartzman, and Maddison Stevens.
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 8th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.
Her parents, Cecil and Gladys (Gaby) Perkins, were well loved and respected Ogunquit icons. Janet, inheriting their genes, thus, came by her exceptional personality naturally. As a young girl she enjoyed strikingly classic looks, but Janet never considered herself attractive, but attractive she was, indeed. Janet enjoyed writing and creating poetry, and when alone, would play the piano for her own enjoyment. Janet leaves her daughter, Crystal Wilson, and her close friend/son, John Fortuine. Janet also leaves many people with fond memories having known her. Knowing her was a unique experience and definitely a privilege. Janet is now at peace, behind the proverbial stack of books. A memorial service will be held to remember Janet in the spring.

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King introduced bipartisan legislation to help ensure volunteer firefighters and other first responders can continue protecting communities that rely on them. The Protect Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act, which is also sponsored by Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Pat Toomey (R-PA), and Mark Begich (D-AK) would amend the Affordable Care Act to make it clear that volunteer emergency service workers are not required to be counted as full-time equiva-

limited has been working with the community to bring an end to domestic violence in York County by providing essential support and safety planning services to individuals whose lives are affected by domestic violence and abuse. The Atlantic Plunge allows Caring Unlimited to continue to provide these important services, which include a 24-hour hotline, emergency sheltering, transitional housing, support and education groups, legal advocacy, school-based education and advocacy, and community education and training. Each year, Caring Unlim-
lent employees (FTEs) for purposes of healthcare coverage. Approximately 750,000 volunteer firefighters serve in 20,000 all-volunteer and 5,000 combination career-volunteer fire departments throughout the United States. In Maine, there are an estimated 405 fire departments throughout the state that are either mostly staffed or all staffed by volunteers. Some volunteer firefighters are nominally paid, and most volunteer first responders have other full-time employment. Many emergency response agencies do not have the resources to provide pay or benefits to volunteers and most volunteer first responders do not expect to receive compensation or health coverage as a result of their volunteer public service. “Maine boasts one of the highest percentages of volunteer and on-call firefighters in the nation, and these brave men and women play a vital role in keeping our communities safe each and every day,” Senator Collins said. “It is unacceptable that an undue burden could be placed
on volunteer fire departments across the country, and it is imperative that this ambiguity in the law be clarified and fixed.” “Hundreds of small towns in Maine and thousands more across the nation rely on volunteer firefighters and other emergency first responders to protect our local communities. Our bipartisan legislation will draw an important distinction between those volunteers and full-time, paid staff that will ensure emergency response units can continue to deliver robust services without the fear of having to deal with cumbersome federal regulations. I have always said that I am prepared to work with my colleagues to improve the ACA, and I am proud to join with Senators Warner, Manchin, Toomey, and Collins in support of this common-sense fix,” Senator King said. This bipartisan legislation has been endorsed by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, National Volunteer Fire Council, and Congressional Fire Services Institute.

Health & Fitness The Growing Problem of Peanut Allergies Parents tend to be quite familiar with food allergies. In an effort to protect youngsters, schools have begun to crack down more regularly on foods that tend to cause allergic reactions, often placing restrictions on what children can bring in for lunches or snacks. Parents and children who grew up around peanut and tree nut allergies are quite familiar with what triggers allergic reactions associated with such foods, and the potential side effects of consuming these foods. But those who are less experienced with food allergies may not know what to expect. According to the Mayo Clinic, being allergic to nuts is one of the more common food allergies, especially among children. Many people who are allergic to peanuts are also allergic to other tree nuts, including walnuts, almonds and pecans. As with any allergen, reactions vary from person to person. Some may experience mild symptoms, such as light rashes or swelling, while others may have severe reactions including anaphylactic shock, which is characterized by shortness of breath, a severe drop in blood pressure,
constriction of airways and potential heart failure. According to Spire Health Partners, more than three million people in the United States have a nut allergy, and one-third of them will suffer from a severe symptom if they ingest nuts. A peanut allergy occurs when your body mistakenly identifies peanut proteins as something that can be harmful. Just as your body might fight a cold, it releases chemicals from the immune system to fight off the peanut invader. The number of kids with peanut allergies has been increasing over the last 10-15 years, doubling in the last half-decade alone. It isn’t known why some people are prone to nut allergies while others are not. However, Michael C. Young, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a practicing pediatrician at Children’s Hospital, has a few ideas. Nursing mothers and very young children are eating more peanuts, particularly in the form of peanut butter, than ever before, something that Young feels could be causing a higher incidence rate of peanut allergies. Young also theorizes that better hygiene may play a role, suggesting that because children

have fewer infections (due to improved hygiene and routine immunizations), their immune systems are more likely to target other things, such as foods and environmental factors, resulting in allergies. Although peanut allergies are prevalent and can be dangerous, there is no reason to act rashly. Young notes that approximately 20 percent of children will outgrow their peanut allergies by the age of six, and he advises that it is worth having a child retested as they get older to gauge if there have been any changes in the status of the peanut allergy. When dealing with peanut allergies, it is important to separate myths from facts. Direct contact is the most common cause of a reaction. This results from eating peanuts or foods that contain peanuts. Cross-contamination,which occurs when peanuts unintentionally come into contact with other foods, is another common cause. Some people can have a reaction by touching peanuts with
their skin. A rash may occur, but a very dangerous reaction will not result unless the peanuts enter the mouth or come into contact
with the nose or eyes. An allergic reaction can occur from inhalation of peanut dust, such as peanut flour or See NUTS page 14...

has been extremely difficult for oncologists to treat requiring a “kitchen sink” approach to stop tumor growth. The lack of targeted drugs for triple-negative breast cancer has left patients with few reliable options. “We are particularly pleased to support this work because of the collaboration it will spark between Maine’s cancer researchers and clinicians,” says Hill. “We feel the academic institutions and the direct care ...NUTS from page 13 ground shells during processing. Aerosol cooking sprays that contain peanut oil also can produce a reaction. It is important to note that the smell of peanuts will not induce an allergic reaction. “Avatar Mice.” The “Avatar Mice” have been specially developed to act as living hosts for cancer tumors, allowing researchers much greater flexibility in studying cancer growth and testing for effective drug treatments. A single tissue sample can be sub-divided and implanted in tens or hundreds of identical mice, allowing for multiple tests at the same time. “We have high hopes for this new approach,” says Tara Hill, Executive Director of Maine Cancer Foundation. “A traditional clinical trial requires volunteer patients and can take years to show results, just for a single drug test. A ‘virtual clinical trial’ using ‘Avatar Mice’ could drastically shorten the testing process and potentially identify treatments for cancer types we can’t currently target, such as triple-negative breast cancer.” Triple-negative breast cancer (so called because it lacks three key genetic characteristics found in other breast cancers)
institutions both benefit when they work together on efforts like this. This project will convene a monthly Avatar Review Board to share data and refine the sampling and testing processes.” Hill also noted that, while this particular study will focus on triple-negative breast cancer, the technique may prove be applicable to many cancer types. really an allergy, but rather an intolerance to a certain food. A food intolerance does not involve the immune system. A person with a food intolerance can eat small amounts of the food with only mild symptoms, such as indigestion, rather than a severe reaction with a true allergy. While being diligent in reading food labels and asking what ingredients are in prepared foods at restaurants is key for people with peanut allergies, so is avoiding potential skin contact. This means thoroughly washing areas where peanuts or peanut butter may have been and ensuring other children wash up after lunch. Peanut allergies are foremost on the minds of parents and educators. Scrappy is well adjusted, playful, gentle and loving. He has all the needed ingredients to be a great family member. Scrappy will do best with older children, other cats and small dogs. Since Scrappy came in from an outdoor life, he would like a family that will allow him the opportunity to enjoy an indoor/outdoor arrangement if possible. This big, sweet guy is already neutered and his vaccinations are current. He has passed his wellness exam and is ready to go home.

Don’t be fooled by Blue’s size; she may be big, but she’s got the loving heart and personality of a puppy. Blue is the type of dog people picture when they daydream about owning the perfect dog. She’s gentle, loving, playful, social and happy-go-lucky. When it’s playtime, she enjoys chasing down balls or engaging in a solid game of Tug o’ War.
To all of you and yours may you have a Wonderful Safe Happy Christmas… from all of the furry, little clients, volunteers and the staff at Another Chance Animal Rescue.

Blue would be more than happy to share a new home with other dogs, dog-savvy cats and gentle children of all ages. She’s lived with all of them in the past and enjoyed spending time with them. Blue’s kind demeanor and overall wonderful personality will make her an ideal addition
to practically any home. If you’d like to add Blue to your home then stop on by the shelter today to meet her.

He has full use of his leg, his kidney levels are much improved and it is very likely he will enjoy a very long and happy and healthy life. While others were warm and safe at home, these women were out in the snow, setting humane traps, hoping to rescue yet another homeless kitty. Thanks, Kathy, Judi and Meredith for your work. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, How do I get rid of Yahoo messenger? Thanks, Inga Dear Inga, To get rid of Yahoo messenger, or any other program, you need to go to the control panel and uninstall it. Here is how: 1. Click on “start” and then, “Control Panel” Or, tap the windows logo key and type, “Control Panel”. 2. In the Control Panel, look in the, “Programs” section and click on, “Uninstall A Program”. 3. Wait while a list of programs installed on your computer is loaded. 4. Find Yahoo Messenger (or any other program you want to remove) in the list of installed programs. 5. Click once on the name of the program you want to remove, then click the, “Uninstall” button in the toolbar. Or, right click on the program you want to remove, and click, “Uninstall” in the context menu that appears. Your program will then be removed from your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am curious what you don’t like about using Irfanview to add text to an image. I have used it for this purpose for many pictures. Also which program do you like
to use? Linda Dear Linda, I find it hard to place the text exactly where I want it in Irfanview. It would work better for me if I could drag the text around in the image. As for what I use, it depends on exactly what I am trying to do. Two open source programs that I like to use are Gimp and Inkscape. They are free open source programs with all the power of some of the more expensive graphics programs. When I want to quickly edit an image, I often use a desktop publishing program called PagePlus by Serif Software. It is easy to use, although it is not made for image editing. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just a got a new computer with Windows 8. Is it possible to add an Internet Explorer shortcut to the desktop page? I know that I can just open new windows with tabs, but it is more convenient for me to just have the icon there so I can click on it to have multiple pages open. I have the Internet Explorer pinned to the menu bar at the bottom of the desktop page, but I am not able to drag it to form a shortcut on the page. That is what they told me to do when I called ASUS.
I would appreciate it if you can help me because I am starting to think it’s not possible to do this simple task. Thank you, Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, It is possible to put a shortcut to Internet Explorer on your desktop, it is just not as easy as it used to be. Here is how: 1. Tap the windows logo key on your keyboard to display the start screen. 2. Type the words “Internet Explorer” to find the program. It will show up in a column on the right of your screen. 3. Right click on “Internet Explorer” when it appears, and click “Open File Location”. This will open a folder that contains the Internet Explorer file. 4. Right Click on the Internet Explorer file in the window, point to “Send To” in the context menu, and click on “Desktop” (Create Shortcut). 5. A shortcut to the program will now be created on your desktop. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a large number of “Favorites,” but a few that are especially important to me. Is there some way I can make these stand out from the rest ? Thank you for your site. It has been a large help to this older
computer user. Jean Dear Jean, There is a way to make a few of your “Favorites” easier to find and use. You can put them in your favorites bar. Let’s take a look at Internet Explorer and see how to set this up. Open Internet Explorer, and if your menu bar is not visible, tap the “Alt” key on your keyboard to activate it. Click on “View” in the menu bar, and point to “Toolbars”. If you don’t see a checkmark in front of “Favorites Bar” click on it to turn it on. Once you have your favorites bar displayed as a toolbar at the top of your browser, you can now add shortcuts to the favorites bar.
Go to a webpage that is important to you. Click on “Favorites” in the menu bar (remember to use the “Alt” key to display the menu bar if you need to). In the “Favorites” menu, click on “Add To Favorites Bar”. This will put a shortcut to the current page in the favorites bar, where you can quickly access it with one click instead of needing to browse through your entire list of favorites. Elizabeth Comments This Week: Dear Computer Lady, In response to the person who wants to have favorites available easier, I find that after following your excellent advice to do one more step. I go to that url in the “Favorites” down page and See COMPUTER page 31...
