York County Community College (YCCC) gathered at YCCC this afternoon to pay tribute to Dr. Charles Lyons, the college’s president for the past six years and a leader in Maine higher education for over two decades. Lyons died of cancer in August of this year. Nearly 150 friends and fans of Charlie’s from across the state joined the Lyons family to dedicate the YCCC conference room, now the Charles M. Lyons Community Board Room. Colby Williams, a YCCC graduate and former president of the college’s Student Senate, assisted in the dedication. “Dr. Lyons’ door was always open, but even more impressive was the depth of his open heart and his open mind. We are all inspired by his legacy, his work to provide opportunities for others to be great,” Williams said. Speakers at the dedication also announced that two scholarship funds have been established to help carry on Dr. Lyons’ legacy: • MCCS President John

Fitzsimmons announced that the Maine Community College System has established the Dr. Charles M. Lyons Memorial Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship to be awarded annually to a second-year YCCC student; and • Former UMS Chancellor Terry MacTaggart announced that the University System has also established a Dr. Charles M. Lyons Memorial Scholarship, a $2.000 scholarship to be awarded annually to a YCCC graduate going on to one of Maine’s universities. See LYONS page 4...

involvement in the Vietnam conflict and honoring those Americans who served there. Also in attendance was the First Lady of Maine, Ann LePage. John O’Leary of the Patriot Guard Riders was there, along with several members of the group that escorts the convoy to Arlington. O’Leary is on the Wreaths Across America’s Board of Directors. Those in the district who organized the event at WJHS included Chessie, teacher Rachel Kilbride, and her husband Jim Kilbride, and teacher Cindy Roche. Cindy Mitchell and Lynn Mercier are advisors to the WJHS Student Council. They

and members of the Council made up 115 “Goodie Bags” including water and handed them out to members of the convoy. Sally Morse and her student volunteers, Abigail Booth, Anna Gould, Evan Leach, Shea Harrington and Kalaeb Fenoff, made wreaths for the ceremony at the cemetery. Some of the students who laid wreaths included, from the fifth grade: Noah Joy and Margaret Foster; from the 6th grade: Sophia Zurlo and Gary Andrews; from the 7th grade: Sam Chase and Kyle Crothers; and from the 8th grade: Kayla Looper and Ryan Barber. Teachers choose students to represent the various grades.

Chamber Names New executive Director KeNNeBuNK, KeNNeBuNKPOrT & aruNDel – Suzanne McKechnie has been named the new executive director of the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel Chamber of Commerce. Prior to the move, she was an economic development specialist for the Sanford Growth Council. Asked about her new job, she said “The executive director is someone who would help advocate for businesses and their services, not just for retail but for services and the tourism industry.” McKechnie grew up in Farmington. She has worked for the Maine Office for Tourism in Augusta. She relocated with her husband, Daniel Stevenson, and their daughter, Abigail, to Kennebunk about two years ago. “The central focus for us right now is membership,” McKechnie said. “To understand what members need, what there are missing, and how we can act as an advocate for those members.” The Chamber has staff members that are interested in meeting with area businesses to talk about the benefits of mem-

It’s a great way to give back to the community.” Some events coming up in the spring include a “February is for Lovers” event, wherein participants can stay at a local bed and breakfast, stroll the lanes, and enjoy the restaurants. WellS – Winning entries in the Wells Parade, held last weekend, were announced by the Wells Chamber of Commerce. “What a fabulous day we had for our 28th Annual Christmas Parade,” said Eleanor J. Vadenais, executive director, “Thank you to everyone who played a part in the parade from our sponsors, volunteers, participants and spectators.” The first-place winner was the Congregational Church of Wells. “We had 24 Sunday school and youth group kids participating, and the float featured a live band with guitar, bass and drums. The kids sang a jazzed up version of “Santa Claus is Coming To Town,” according to Robin Barnard, organizer of the float. Second place went to Congdon’s Doughnuts, and third place went to the Brown Family. Honorable mentions included the Ogunquit Playhouse and the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce.

In many cases, I caught people off-guard as they were going about their work and responsibilities, and I learned first-hand that running for office can be a passionate but arduous task for both parties involved. Running for office makes you realize that asking for a vote is an exercise in supreme trust, and part of that is proving that we can and should trust one another. Meeting new people and sharing differing views has been both educational and uplifting for me. I am grateful for the experience, and it is now a treasured part of my life.

Coupon is worth an extra $25 towards your transaction of $75 or more.*

I would like to thank all residents of District 1 here in York, Kittery, South Berwick, Ogunquit and Eliot, for allowing me the opportunity to run for the Maine Senate. As most of you know, I had not done this before, and I appreciate your patience as I navigated the political landscape for the very first time.

Nationally and statewide here in Maine, there have been many hard-fought campaigns. As we go into this holiday season and look towards the new year, I think it’s important for all of us to remember that we ultimately want the same things – pursuing and maintaining our happiness and health, the ability to pay our bills, spending time with family and friends, fair treatment, and doing all we can for our children. Frankly, most of the political arguments we continue to hear in the news are really just different approaches to the very same goals.

dent Emeritus Status on Dr. Lyons. “Charlie brought joy to anyone who was in his presence,” he said. “He was warm, engaging, and full of energy. Charlie believed in the power of higher education to transform lives and spent his life making sure Maine people could achieve their dream of a college degree.” During President Lyons’ tenure at YCCC, enrollment increased 77 percent, the college added eight new programs of study and was twice named one of the fastest growing community colleges in the country. In addition to the legacy he leaves at York County Community College, Dr. Lyons held a variety of senior administrative posts within the University of Maine System, serving as president of both the University of Maine at Fort Kent (1996-2001) and the University of Maine at Augusta (2001-2006). He also served for three years as vice chancellor of the University of Maine System. As Fitzsimmons noted in his remarks: “I hope that ten or fifty years from now students who meet in this conference room or who benefit from one of the scholarships being established here today will recognize and appreciate just how much Dr. Lyons was loved by all of us.”

Dozens of volunteers work for several months preparing for the event each year, according to Janet and Larry Cassidy, its co-chairs, and many more will perform as actors on the evening of the performance. “Besides the actors,” he said, “the committees range from set design, props and costumes to carpentry, lighting and even live animals.” “There will be seven distinct scenes,” Janet said. “The first is the annunciation of Mary by the angel Gabriel, which will be right behind Town Hall. “Then there will follow a series of scenes including Caesar’s palace, travelers on the road to Bethlehem, the wise men, the overcrowded inn, shepherds and angels in the field and, of course, the manger.” Church members – children and adults – will be portraying the more than 70 characters in the nativity story, according to the Cassidys. The audience will be able to view each scene from See NATIVITY page 7...

Holiday Lighting Safety Tips

auGuSTa – Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is urging its customers to follow some simple electrical safety tips so they can have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. In addition to testing smoke detectors and planning emergency fire escape routes, people should keep the following tips in mind: The combination of dried Christmas tree limbs and hot lights

can be dangerous, so keep the tree fresh. Before you put the tree in its stand, cut its base at a 45-degree angle so it can absorb water. Water the tree liberally — the average tree can consume between a quart and a gallon of water a day. Remove the tree promptly after the holiday or when it becomes dry. Decorate the tree with miniature lights. They produce much less heat and reduce the drying

effect on the tree. Keep flammable decorations away from the tree’s lights. Also make sure that electric window candles do not touch drapes or other flammable objects. Don’t overload electrical circuits or extension cords. Follow the directions on cord labels regarding connecting lights strings and extension cords. Make sure the cords are out of the way so that nobody trips over them. Carefully inspect light cords, plugs and receptacles for worn or frayed insulation and loose connections. Throw away damaged items. Keep wires away from toddlers. Push wires toward the center of the tree, and clip them securely to the branches. Never use electric lights on metallic trees. Avoid using plastic trees unless they’re flame resistant. Always turn holiday lights off before going to sleep and when you leave home. Only use lights and cords that have been factory tested. Check for the UL label on the packaging. For outside use, use only outdoor-approved lights that can withstand cold temperatures. While decorating the outside of your home, never raise ladders, poles or other extended objects into or near power lines. If you are decorating an outside tree, check to make sure that its limbs aren’t near power lines. Remember that no power line is safe to touch, ever.

Leanne Cusimano. The first place winner was Five-O Shore Road restaurant with a “Frosty the Snowman” theme. Second place winner was the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce with their “Polar Express” float. In third place was the Brown Family with a Holiday themed float. Jeff Porter, co-owner of Five-O restaurant, was proud of their entry. “Our fifth entry and fourth first place showing,” Porter said. “It is truly a team effort. The entire staff chips in and does their part, and it’s a lot of fun.” Honorable mentions went to the Ogunquit Playhouse, the Gazebo Inn, Better Homes/the Masiello Group, the Encore Youth Chorus from Ogunquit Baptist Church, and Wild Blueberry Café. In the Decorating Contest, Abalonia came in first place. Spolied Rotten finished second, and Moon Over Maine came in third. Area businesses decorated their buildings, and then people voted for their favorites on Facebook. “It’s a classic New England look,” said Frances Reed, vice-president of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce, about Abalonia’s entry. Reed reminded locals that the Chamber still has limited edition ornaments left.

KeNNeBuNKPOrT – Maine is leading the nation in eco-friendly Busse Green Technologies septic system installations with the third septic system in the United States once again being installed in Kennebunkport. The first Busse system was installed in Harpswell in 2011, and the second was installed at Goose Rocks Beach/Kennebunkport earlier this year. Busse septic systems are 90 percent smaller than typical leech fields and the systems break down waste 100 percent organically. Installed above the ground within a matter of hours, Busse systems recycle a majority of the water it filters back into the building it came from as purified water that exceeds recommended clean water standards and reduces water usage by as much as 30 percent. The Busse Green Septic System technology will be featured on the hit PBS television series This Old House in February of 2013. For more information on Busse Green Technologies and the environmental benefits, contact certified Maine soil scientist Albert Frick at 207839-5563 or Bob Anuszewski at 207-967-4246.

We’ve changed to offer you more affordable care! York Hospital in Wells Emergency & Walk-in Care is now Myhealth@Wells Walk-in Care! Last summer, York Hospital in Wells piloted a new, lower cost, high care walk-in center. It ran alongside the Emergency Care center at York Hospital in Wells and was well received by residents and visitors alike. Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received, and our need to make care more affordable for our patients, we are now pleased to offer one, dynamic walk-in care service at York Hospital in Wells. York Hospital in Wells is now Myhealth@ Wells Walk-in Care. York Hospital’s “Myhealth” care concept (which is also available at York Hospital in Kittery) offers quick, compassionate, and convenient walk-in care staffed by nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses. At Myhealth@Wells, services are available 7 days a week, 8am-6pm, and centered on providing immediate care for minor illnesses and injuries, as well as health prevention services. This change means we no longer provide the higher cost emergency level services at York Hospital in Wells. However, our specialty-trained emergency physicians and nurses are available to meet any need at the Emergency Care Center at York Hospital, which is open 24 hours a day. This change also allows us to provide the health care services our patients in the Wells area have told us they want - walk-in care at a more affordable price.

Offering you the care you want at a price you can afford. At Myhealth@Wells, care starts at just $65 per visit - with most insurances accepted!

Grade-Schooler Gives Competition Winnings to Sandy Victims SCarBOrOuGH – The American Red Cross is grateful for contributions from community-minded young people like Elizabeth Albahary. A grade-schooler from Scarborough, Albahary has a passion for performing, and most recently has shown a great interest in humanitarian issues. She managed to combine these two interests to make a difference to those affected by Superstorm Sandy. Albahary was asked by her teacher to participate in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Maine Chapter Singing Competition. Held in mid-November at Bates College, Albahary did not enter the competition to win. Rather she was focused on enjoying a learning experience. The event was not only a learning experience, but Albahary did a little teaching of her own, as she won the competition. After watching the nationally televised “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” benefit for the American Red Cross’ relief efforts, Albahary immediately asked her mom if she could use the monetary award to help where help was needed most. Albahary is now encouraging all kids to send just one dollar to the American Red Cross to help with the massive relief effort. She says that even donations of one dollar can add up and make a real difference. Albahary is a great example of the giving spirit here in Maine. She has also agreed to donate her time and talent by singing the national anthem at this coming year’s American Red Cross Real Heroes Awards Event held on April 4, 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Portland. Dr. Ilyas Starting Full Time at Cancer Care Center SaNFOrD – Cancer treatment is about forging relationships, sharing a commitment to health and maintaining the highest level of communication with patients, according to the Cancer Care Center in Sanford. It’s something that Dr. Can “John” Ilyas, Maine Center for Cancer Medicine medical oncologist and hematologist, prides himself on each and every day. Originally from Turkey, Ilyas began full time practice at the Center in November. Trained in his home country, New York Methodist Hospital and the University of Maryland, Ilyas also understands the significance of having the most comprehensive treatment close to home. He sees the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle demonstrated by his interest in tennis and his passion for preparing dishes with mostly vegetables and very little meat. Ilyas has not only found an effective stressreducing hobby that he shares with his wife and two daughters, but also one that paves a path to better health. “Perhaps most important consideration for our patients is that clinical trials are available locally. Even the lab work and imaging studies that often accompany trials is available nearby. I feel incredibly privileged to be treating my patients and helping them during a difficult time in their lives,” he says. The Cancer Care Center of York County has been providing radiation oncology through Spectrum Medical Group and medical oncology through the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine for more than six years. The Cancer Care Center, located in Sanford, is a collaborative effort of Maine Medical Center, Goodall Hospital, and Southern Maine Medical Center. What Does the Kennebunk savings fiscal cliff Debate scholarships awarded at Yccc Mean for Maine’s WellS – Four York County ComRetirement security? munity College students recently AARP’s analysis shows what last-minute budget deal could mean for seniors POrTlaND – With the December 31 deadline to address expiring tax and spending cuts looming, many people across the nation and here in Maine are left wondering what Washington’s budget debate means for them. Unfortunately, some in Washington are considering cramming changes to Medicare and Social Security into a year-end budget deal. AARP is providing a breakdown of the impact a shortsighted budget deal could have on the health and retirement security of Maine seniors and their kids and grandkids. Social Security by-thenumbers in Maine and what a last-minute budget deal could mean: In Maine, 204,129 seniors currently receive Social Security for an average annual benefit of $13,100, just over 1,000 a month. Social Security makes up about 64% of the typical older Mainer’s income, lifting 41% out of poverty. In addition, it pumps $3.7 billion into the state economy. Changing the way cost of living adjustments (COLA) are calculated for Social Security beneficiaries by moving to a chained consumer price index, as is on the table in debt deal discussions, cuts benefits, taking roughly $0.58 billion out of the pockets of Maine Social Security beneficiaries over the next 10 years – and $112 billion beneficiaries nationwide. “The current Social Security COLA already understates what an average older

Mainer spends and purchases each month. Assuming that most people receiving Social Security, who are already just getting by, will simply ‘trade down’ in their spending on prescription drugs, utilities and other fixed expenses for lower cost options is out of touch with reality,” said Lori Parham for AARP in Maine. “Americans have worked too hard to earn their benefits to end up getting pushed over the edge in a fiscal cliff deal. Social Security is not a cause of the budget deficit, and it shouldn’t be used to solve it.” Medicare by-the-numbers in Maine and what a last-minute budget deal could mean: Roughly 209,288 Mainers are enrolled in Medicare, spending 19%, or $5,500 on out-of-pocket medical expenses. In 2011, Medicare spent an estimated $2.36 billion on health care services in Maine. The move being considered by Congress to raise the eligibility age from 65 to 67 would leave 28,069 Mainers without health coverage (based on current beneficiary data), forcing them into the private insurance market, which is estimated to cost them an additional $2200 per year. Further, removing the youngest and healthiest older Americans from the Medicare risk pool will increase premiums for those remaining in the program. “Raising the Medicare eligibility age would dramatically increase costs for recently retired and soon-to-retire seniors, drive up premiums for those enrolled in Medicare and increase overall health care costs,” added Parham. “Seniors deserve guaranteed coverage, not higher costs.”

bike Ride to benefit southern Maine Veterans’ Memorial cemetery SaNFOrD – Forrest Mansur of Heritage Memorials will be making a self-supported bicycle ride from Maine to Key West to benefit the Southern Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Association (SMVCA) Beautification Project. The SMVCA has been working on this project for more than two years, and Forrest has volunteered for this fundraising ride. Sanford Institution for Savings is sponsoring Forrest’s initiative by donating $250 to his cause. The goal is to raise $30,000 to buy and install service emblems on the gates at the entrance of the cemetery. SMVCA does so much for the region’s veterans and has continually worked towards beautifying the final resting place of these honored servicemen and women; these emblems and plaques will play an important role in rec-

ognizing their lives and their legacy. Any extra money raised will be used for continued beautification of the cemetery in honor of our veterans. All costs of this trip will be com-

pletely self-funded including lodging, food, repairs, etc. All of the donations raised will go directly to SMVCA. “SIS is honored to sponsor Forrest in this inspirational venture,” said Mark Mickeriz,

president and CEO of SIS. “We have always been dedicated to supporting individuals who are making strides towards improving our local community, and it is always gratifying to help support our veterans. We encourage all of our friends and customers to also lend their support to Forrest and to our military veterans however they can.” Mansur’s journey will start on Saturday, December 15, at the Southern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Springvale, Maine, and end at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. “The trip will take approximately 40 days and cover about 1,800 miles,” says Mansur. “I’ll be sharing posts and pictures from the bike ride depicting the towns I travel through along the way.” To follow his blog and find out more on how you can help, go to www.heritagememorialsme.com and click on the bike ride benefit.

...MCKECHNIE from page 1 to help businesses reconnect and learn what’s new for 2013 is planned to be held at the high school in the spring. “Experience the Kennebunks,” the annual guide will be published in January. “So we’d love to hear from members and non-members, so they don’t miss out on the opportunity,” McKechnie said. When asked about the Chamber’s New Year’s resolution, she said she’s excited about their expansion. The offices are moving in April of 2013 to 16 Water Street. Currently the office is in Lower Village, a short stroll from Kennebunkport. “We’re not vacating our existence here, though,” McKechnie said. “We have a kiosk that will open again in the spring. It’s an interactive kiosk where individuals can use a computer to type in and look up events, restaurants, and things to do. Also, we staff it in the summertime. It’s a great opportunity to have visibility in both locations.” The Chamber is wrapping up its raffle, which offers the chance to win a “Getaway to the Kennebunks.” The $20 raffle ticket is for a two-night stay at premier lodging. The drawing will be held on Saturday, December 15. “It’s your last chance,” McKechnie said. “We’re only selling only 1,000 tickets, so the chances are pretty good.” For more information about the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel Chamber of Commerce, call 207-967-0857. ...AWARD from page 15 experience for high school and home-schooled juniors and seniors who wish to experience a college classroom, explore career options, and earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Coincidentally, the four scholarship students all participated in the Dual Enrollment program. “Kennebunk Savings has been a generous donor over the years, helping the college tremendously,” said Dr. John Rainone, executive director of the York County Community College Foundation. “This award allows four outstanding students to attend YCCC for a full year at no cost, allowing them to save money for their future studies.”

~ ask The Computer lady ~ Dear Computer lady, How do I take a picture (snapshot) of a page? Sometimes for work when I am composing email, I want to show what I am talking about. Please help! Thanks, Elaine Dear elaine, This is a great question! I take snapshots of my screen quite often when I am writing directions for people, and I use special software just for that purpose. Fortunately, though, you don’t have to purchase any software to take a basic screenshot. Every Windows computer comes with the functions necessary to do this. The first component of taking a screenshot is easy. Just press the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. You won’t see any immediate results, but in the background, Windows has just taken a picture of your screen, and stored it on the clipboard. It is up to you to paste the copy into a program that can use it. The Windows “Paint” program is perfect for this. Just open Paint, (found in the “Programs” menu under “Accessories”) click on “Edit” in the menu bar, then click “Paste” and your screenshot will be pasted in this “Paint” window. From there, you can edit, crop and save the picture. If you are running Windows 7, it is even easier to take a screenshot using a new feature called the “Snipping Tool.” The Snipping Tool is also located in your programs menu

under “Accessories,” and you can use it to select a section of the screen you want to copy, and then save your image. Elizabeth Dear Computer lady, I’m a recruiter and maintain client/candidate folders in Outlook 2007 (v12). I keep all correspondence, which over the years has built into hundreds of folders and thousands of messages. I have searched for ways to move this info for storage but the only solution to date would be to open each message and copy/paste into a Word doc – which could take weeks. Is there any other way to move folders/messages from outlook to a retrievable storage space? Thank you, Lisa Dear lisa, It depends on how you want to be able to access the messages in the future. Outlook (which is part of Microsoft Office) has an archive feature that allows you to archive messages. When you do this, they are moved into a new file that you could copy to a disk

and move to another computer. The only catch is that you would need to have Outlook installed on any computer that you wanted to access the messages from. To archive messages, click on the “File” tab in Outlook, then point to “Mailbox Cleanup” and click, “Archive.” Select the folder you want to archive, then click the “Browse” button to select the location for your archive file. (It might be useful to create a folder in your Documents folder so it will be easy to find later) then click the “OK” button. Copy the file you created to a removable storage device like a USB data stick, or CD, and bring it to the computer you want to view them on. Copy the file to the new computer, open Outlook, then click “File” and “Open” then “Open Outlook Data File.” Find your file and open it. The messages will show up in your Outlook window just like they did on the old computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer lady,

Is Windows XP Mode available for Windows 8? Thank you in advance for your help. Ren Dear ren, Unfortunately, Microsoft has decided not to develop Windows XP mode for Windows 8. Since extended support for XP will end in April 2014, it does not make sense for them to continue to develop it. If you are using software or hardware the depends on XP mode to run, you are better off sticking with Windows 7 for now, but keep in mind that you will have to upgrade eventually and move to a newer software or hardware platform that will work with Windows 8 or even the next Microsoft operating system. Elizabeth Dear Computer lady, Are the clipboard and Note Pad the same? I see the note pad on my list of programs but not the clipboard. Thanks so much, Theresa Dear Theresa,

No, the clipboard and Notepad are not the same thing. Notepad is a very basic text viewing and editing program. Notepad does not store formatting information about text like bold or underlined, only unformatted text can be viewed or edited in Notepad. The clipboard is a temporary storage area for information that you have copied from one location on your computer and plan to use in another location on your computer. Any time that you select text or graphics and then use the “Copy” or “Cut” commands, you move that text or graphics to the clipboard where they will be stored until you use the “Paste” command, or you cut or copy another selection. Wells Rotary Recognized for Support of Wells-Ogunquit CSD Story and photo by Reg Bennett WellS – At its December 5 meeting, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee recognized the combined contributions that the Wells Rotary Club has made over time in support of the mission of the Wells-Ogunquit CSD. Presenting a “Certificate in Recognition” to Suzanne Ilsley, president of Wells Rotary, was School Committee Chair Russell Fox, who pointed out that the Rotary has provided support for the WOCSD for many years. Examples of the Wells Rotary Club’s generosity to the District include the donation of funds for scholarships, financial support for the construction of a concession stand near the athletic fields of Wells High School, and a donation to help four Wells High School students attend Rotary International United Nations Day in New York City on November 3. Fox later noted the Rotary’s reach into the greater community of Wells. “You can see the work they’ve done at Wells Harbor, you can see the work they’ve done at Wells Parks and

Recreation; they are very supportive of our community,” he said. Photo below: President of the Wells Rotary Club Suzanne Ilsley receiving a certificate of recognition from Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee Chair Russell Fox on December 5.

Village Tavern Comes to Life

WeST KeNNeBuNK – Those in West Kennebunk may have seen a sign in front of the Old Cummings Market on Alfred Road which reads “One Day Closer.” That day is rapidly approaching, and the residents of West Kennebunk are anxiously awaiting the opening of The Village Tavern. The renovations to the exterior and interior of the newest addition to West Kennebunk is nearing completion, and the results are most impressive. The exterior of the building has been restored to emulate the building as it looked in 1890’s when it was at the heart of the village. Richard and Tina Lemoine, owners and tavern keepers, have created a warm and comfortable atmosphere inside the building with a setting that harkens back to an earlier age when you went to a tavern to relax, meet old friends, and enjoy a memorable meal with your family. The Lemoines are bringing to fruition a “lifelong dream” of owning a restaurant that will also be their home. These “hands-on” owners envisioned a place where local folks and visitors from away can come to enjoy great food and experience a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Their dream is nearing reality, and they could not be happier. Richard has more than 30 years of experience preparing memorable meals. He has been the chef at The White Barn Inn, Salt Marsh Inn, and Cape Arundel Inn in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. The Lemoines have prepared a great “bill of fare” for the Tavern with classic, traditional and special entrees all at reasonable prices. It’s “slowcooked comfort food,” made from scratch so any dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Tina has applied her design talents and managerial skills to the tavern and created an environment where there will be “no strangers - just new friends we have yet to meet” and assembled an experienced staff, many of whom they have worked with for more than 20 years. Tina and Richard have been married for 31 years, lived in Kennebunk for more than 26 years, and have two adult children, Tia & Neil, who will be working at the Village Tavern. The tavern plans to open for dining mid-December and already has reservations for a number of special parties and events.

Kennebunk Artist at Gafney Library in NH

KENNEBUNK – The walls of the Gafney Library in Sanbornville, New Hampshire, pop with bright reds, oranges, shades of blue and lime green in the acrylic works of artist Robin Swennes. “Red Tail Light,” “Hot Pink Caddy,” “LOVE in all colors,” “Beets ME!,” and “Heirloom Gems” are some of the works on canvas and wood. The display will remain through December. Swennes is a painter, illustrator, and graphic artist, living in Kennebunk. “I like to photograph my subjects so I can put my own unique composition into each piece,” says Swennes. “I love using bright colors and prefer selecting a part of the whole scene, so it’s not a typical view.” This is true for example, of “Bel Air Baby,” which depicts the long view of the driver’s side of the bright red Bel Air using the entire canvas. Over the years, Swennes’ il-

lustrations have appeared on postcards, shelftalkers, and annual reports for Toms of Maine, school books for Heinle & Heinle, and product labels for Green Bee Natural Soda. She’s designed signs and logos all around Kennebunk, and hangs much of her art at Seed & Bean Coffeehouse in West Kennebunk. Swennes paints anything from barns and buoys to vegetables and antique cars. Join Swennes for “art talk and refreshments” on Saturday December 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Swennes does custom work and may be reached at 207-9851225, rswennes@roadrunner. com or visit her work on www. designchoc.com. The exhibit is available for viewing during open library hours of Tuesday and Thursday 1-7:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday 10-noon and Saturday 9-2. For more information call library director Beryl Donovan at 207522-3401.

Monday, December 17 Blue Christmas Service

Are you having a Blue Christmas season? The joy of decking the halls with boughs of holly can be a stark contrast with the interior realities of those of us who have experienced loss in the last year. The pain of broken relationships, lost employment, ill health, loneliness, the gut-wrenching loss of a child, the emptiness of no longer having a beloved spouse or partner to share each day, the death of a dear family pet—all these can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of feeling “blue” in the midst of the society around us which seems bent on being happy and celebrating. There are years when we hurt at Christmas time and can’t get into the festivities others seem able to enjoy. St. George’s Episcopal Church invites you to a Blue Christmas service at 7 pm. For more information, call 207-363-7376 x-101 or email office@stgeorgesyorkharbor.org.

~ News ~ Wells Town Treasurer retires WellS – Town Treasurer Leo Ouellette was honored at a retirement celebration Wednesday at the Coastal House in Wells. Ouellette was treasurer for six years, with two additional years as an employee. The new treasurer, Jodie Sanborn, was promoted from within. Sanborn was the town’s accountant before that. “I’m turning 65. Time to go, I guess,” Ouellette said. “I had some good friends of mine who barely made it to 65 and passed away. I want to enjoy life a bit.” Ouellette says he plans to spend time with his wife, Diane, and to volunteer to stay busy. “The rotary approached me. I used to be on the board of the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, and the church has also asked for some help,” he said. “And I have my ‘honey-do’ list to do at home. I’ve been trying to clean out the basement for a long time.” In addition to all of that, Ouellette says retirement will give him more time to spend with his hobby, which is four-part har-

In 2009, we became the BHS Northeastern District Seniors Quartet Champion,” according to the website, www. melodiesandmemories.org. “As such, we competed at the BHS Midwinter Convention in Pasa-

Many of the vendors are back from last winter’s market, and several of the regular summer food and craft vendors are also attending. Just like our summer market, this event is always free to attend. The goal of this market is to support local farmers, foodproducers, artists and artisans, while offering a one-stop shopping experience for customers looking to buy all of their produce, breads, sweets, meats and specialty foods for the week. The select crafters at this market offer locally made, unique gifts. The following vendors are participating this year: Bridgewater Farm, Brownie’s Barkery, Buddha’s Burning Buns, LLC, Chef’s Cove, Ellie May’s Sweet Toffee Crunch, Garen’s

YOrK – The Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce announced the 2012 - 2013 Winter Farmers’ Market season beginning on December 15 at the American Legion. Steph Oeser, the market manager, says, “We’re really excited to kick of this third season. We’ve got more farmers (both produce and protein) than ever before at our winter market. It takes time to build up a market, and it can be quite a balancing act to try to find a good variety of vendors and farmers in the first few years. I’m pleased with the number of farmers this year and I’m working to keep that momentum going. Hopefully our customer base will expand this year to match the broader variety of products as well.” The 2012 - 2013 Winter Gateway Farmers’ Market will take place on nine Saturdays between December and March indoors at the American Legion (next to Hannaford at 9 Han-

Lobster Dip 2013 Raises $ for Special Olympics Maine

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Looking for something really cool to do on New Year’s Day? Perhaps one of your resolutions for 2013 is to help a great cause. Enjoy experiences that give you chills? Now you can do all three in one. There is still time to register for the 2013 Lobster Dip for Special Olympics Maine. This is Maine’s largest and original ocean plunge. The event will take place on New Year’s Day at noon in front of the Brunswick Hotel and Ocean Side Grille at Old Orchard Beach. In 2012, Dippers raised nearly $100,000 for Special Olympics Maine, the statewide, year-round program of sports training and athletic competitions for more than 3,500 athletes. As always, all properly registered Dippers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a pre-

mium long-sleeved Lobster Dip t-shirt. All new additional incentives will apply for additional funds raised and grand prizes for top fundraisers. Incentives are awarded at the $250, $500, $750, and $1000 levels. Here’s how to participate: Individuals – Raise a minimum of $100 and register properly. Teams – Five or more dippers (each team member must raise a minimum of $100) may register as a team. Simply choose a team name (and a team costume?) and register under that team name (additional prize incentives apply for top fundraising teams). Registration Times and locations: All Dippers must register properly, which means you must turn in a minimum of $100 and your completed Lobster Dip release form. Call 207-879-0489

or visit www.somaine.org for registration packets and details. Note: You will have the capability once again, for fundraising online at www.Firstgiving. com. Bring a printout confirmation of your online funds raised when you register, as this will be applied to your total. Helpful Tips: Plan to arrive by at least 11 a.m., even if you have preregistered, to allow time to find a parking space. Bring beach shoes or old sneakers, etc. to wear into the water, and a towel, blanket, or robe. Changing rooms and showers will be available. If you pre-register but have more money to turn in on Dip Day, you may do so at registration. There will be a post dip party with food, cash bar, music, and fun.

Commissioner Selects New State Veterinarian AUGUSTA – Commissioner Walter Whitcomb of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry announced the selection of Dr. Michele Walsh as Maine State Veterinarian. Walsh, who assumed her position this week, will work within the Division of Animal and Plant Health to monitor the health of domestic animals and diseases that affect both humans and animals statewide. “We’re pleased to have Dr. Walsh join the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry team,” Whitcomb said. “She’ll contribute her extensive experiences assisting individuals, as well as monitoring conditions impacting food safety, emergency response, and state and regional health responsibilities.” “I’m looking forward to working closely with Maine’s diverse agricultural community,” Walsh said. “Proper animal care is the hallmark of Maine farmers, small and large. great group of individuals, and I’ll learn from them as I share my diverse background in both clinical and on-the-farm settings.” Among Walsh’s responsibilities is overseeing Maine’s certification and testing programs to ensure compliance with interstate and international requirements for the exportation of animals; assisting dairy producers to improve milk quality; preventing the introduction and spread

of contagious, infections and parasitic disease among poultry and livestock; and monitoring Maine’s agricultural fairs. A New England native, the new state veterinarian spent as much time as possible on her family’s dairy farms in Ireland. She moved to mid-coast Maine in 2001 after graduation from veterinary school. Walsh received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in English and Irish lit-

USDA Plans to Buy up to $16 Million of Wild Maine Blueberries Aims to use them for federal food nutrition programs. MAINE – In October, the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine wrote to the United States Department of Agriculture to ask the agency to consider purchasing wild Maine blueberries. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced that the USDA has responded positively to the request. “This is great news for Maine growers, who are looking at a 25 percent drop in prices because of a bumper crop this summer. The USDA’s purchase will go a long way to stabilizing those prices and helping Maine growers recoup losses,”

said Pingree. “Plus, it’s great that these wild blueberries will be headed to food pantries and school lunches across the country. They’re extremely healthy, preservative free, and absolutely delicious.” USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service purchases a variety of high-quality food products each year to support the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Summer Food Service Program, the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Emergency Food Assistance Program. USDA also makes emergency food purchases for distribution to victims of natural disasters.

Bath Iron Works Awarded $70 Million Contract BATH – Bath Iron Works has won a $70 million contract to perform design and planning services for maintenance and upgrade to the Arleigh Burke line of destroyers and Perry class of guided missile frigates, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said this week. “BIW has built dozens of these ships, and I can’t think of a better place for the Navy to go to plan for the maintenance and modernization of these vessels,” Pingree said. “This contract represents $70 million of work

at the yard next year, which is important to help keep some of the best shipbuilders in the world on the job.” Bath Iron Works launched the Oliver Hazard Perry, the first ship in the Perry line of guided missile frigates, in 1975. BIW launched the Arleigh Burke, the lead ship in that class of guided missile destroyers, in 1989. Pingree has continued to fight for funding to keep BIW building enough new Arleigh Burke class destroyers to maintain employment levels at the yard.

For 26 years, the Wares

New Novel Features Wells model WellS – A 2010 graduate of Wells High School will adorn the cover of an upcoming work of fiction set in York County. “Wasted on the Young” is the forthcoming novel from Thomas E. Coughlin and will have a picture of Nicole Poirier on the front and back covers. It is Coughlin’s eighth novel, and much of it is set at Kennebunk High School and in the town’s upper village. Poirier is currently a student at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. She is also employed part-time as a waitress at Billy’s Chowder House in Wells. “This is the first time Mr. Coughlin has looked outside of New Hampshire and Massachusetts for his cover model. Nicole portrays the character of Emma Corman, a junior at Kennebunk High, on the book

He was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (7th overall) of the 1993 First-Year Player Draft. As a minor leaguer in 1995 and 1996, Nixon played

Safety First for Winter Sportsmen YOrK COuNTY – Winter is a special time of year for sportsmen. The great outdoors beckons men and women in the wintertime, when skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding are just a few of the many cold weather activities to entice athletes out of their homes. Though winter sports can help fend off cabin fever, those who don’t exercise certain safety precautions might find themselves dealing with another kind of fever. Cold weather can leave men, women and children susceptible to illness or injury if they aren’t careful. The following are a few safety tips for winter sportsmen who want to make the most of the coming winter sports season. Inadequate clothing is one of the easiest ways a winter sportsmen can fall victim to illness or injury . But the right clothing can go a long way toward ensuring this winter sports season is fun and illness- and injury-free. Wear protective head gear. Protective headgear can help sportsmen avoid colds and head injuries. When venturing outdoors in the winter, always wear a protective wool ski cap. Most body heat is lost through the head, but wool caps help your body retain warmth on cold days and nights. In addition, sportsmen should always wear protective headgear when skiing, sledding, snowboarding or playing ice hockey. Even the most experienced sportsmen can

suffer a head injury when playing a winter sport, but the appropriate headgear can prevent head injuries to veteran and novice athletes alike. Dress in layers. Dressing in layers is another way to stay warm and prevent illness in the winter months. Kids are especially susceptible to cold weather, so parents should dress them in one more layer than they dress themselves. When wearing scarves, sportsmen should tuck their scarves in so they don’t get tangled with sporting equipment. Winter is a great time to go ice skating or play some hockey. However, ice sports like skating and hockey can be especially dangerous, and it’s wise for adults and children to be as cautious as possible when getting in some ice time. Beware of thin ice. Ice that forms on moving waters, including rivers and creeks, is never safe enough to skate on. Such waters should always be avoided no matter how thick the ice may

against the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field as a member of the Trenton Thunder, then a Red Sox affiliate. Nixon appeared in 1,092 big league games where he hit .274 with 137 home runs and 555 RBI. Nixon had a career best year in 2003 where he hit .306 with 24 doubles and 28 home runs. In Game Three of the American League Division Series that year with the Red Sox facing elimination, Nixon delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer in the 11th inning lifting the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory. Nixon’s Red Sox career came to an end in 2006. He spent the 2007 season with the Cleveland Indians and the 2008 season with the New York Mets before retiring in the spring of 2009. All proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will benefit the official charity of the Portland Sea Dogs’, the Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. For every strikeout that a Sea Dogs’ pitcher throws money is raised through pledges of businesses and individuals. In the 18 year history of the program, more than four million dollars has been raised. appear. When going ice skating or playing hockey outdoors, only do so on waters that are supervised and have been tested and approved for skating. Skiing and snowboarding are immensely popular in the winter, but that popularity should not overshadow how dangerous these activities can be. Sledding is a great way to have some fun in the winter snow. But even though sledding is often seen as a carefree activity, it can be risky as well. Never sled near traffic. Sledding near traffic is a definite no-no, as it risks the lives of sledders and motorists alike. Always make sure you sled in an insulated area far away from roadways. Sled feet-first or sitting up. Sledding feet-first or sitting up greatly reduces a sledder’s risk of suffering a head or neck injury. Never sled while lying down head first. Never sled on ice. Sledding on ice can cause injuries and make it difficult to control a sled. When sledding, only do so on packed snow.

Traip Boys Basketball Preview By Brandon Metevier Traip Academy Weekly Sentinel Intern Edited by Tim Gillis KITTerY – Outlook: Nine seniors are on the roster this year which makes Traip deep, with plenty of experience on the bench. Like last year, Traip’s Class B schedule will be a monster playing York twice, Wells twice, Falmouth, Greely, Yarmouth, and Freeport. Most of these teams should be in the top tier of Class B. Traip is hoping to be a better defensive team this year and to use their defense to get them back in the playoffs. Senior guard/forward Atencio Martin will be expected to lead the Rangers on offense this year as he averaged 13.7 points last season. The team will also look to Czahor, Montembeau, Cavanagh, Tucker and Foye for help on the offensive end. Traip has

one exchange student playing, Gabriel Mancini, from Argentina, who has been impressive during preseason and will be looked upon as a spark in the Traip system. Overall, the team will be tested early in the season with games against Class C rivals Waynflete and Old Orchard Beach, as well as Class B favorites York and Falmouth before Christmas. Traip is 1-0 after beating Sacopee Valley, in Hiram, by a score of 67-20. roster: Chris Bailey (So C) Cam Cavanagh (Sr F) Chris Czachor (Jr G) Dan Eddy (Sr C/F) Nick Foye (Sr G) Gabriel Mancini (Sr) Atencio Martin (Sr G/F) Christian Montembeau (Sr G) Evan Pereira (Sr F) Peter Roy (Jr G/F) Josh Schneier (So G) Jack Tucker (Sr F) Tyler Yuva (Sr F)

WeST KeNNeBuNK – Kittens from louisiana have arrived at the aWS Unwanted and seeking homes, these kittens traveled miles and miles to the safety of the AWS. Thanks to the loving and devoted animal care folks in LA, these sweeties were transported to us to be put up for adoption in Maine where adoption opportunities abound and loving homes await these warm bundles of joy. Ranging in age from 10 weeks to just shy of 1 year, these youngsters are more than ready to light up your world. Why so far away you might wonder? Doesn’t AWS help cats who are “closer to home?” AWS is very proud to extend its services and care to animals both in Maine and beyond. From Fort Kent Maine, to Seattle, Washington, to Canada, and New Mexico, AWS has helped companion animals of all types. To date, a grand total of 2,605 rabbits, cats, birds, and dogs have all found great new homes through our transport program. Most of these pets would not have had other options had they stayed where they were. AWS is always happy to partner with other Maine shelters who need assistance in placing pets. This program operates on the basis of space availability, and local animals are always our priority. Snuggles Who says real men don’t wear pink? Meet Snuggles, a 6-year old softie of a pit bull. This pink and gray pup likes to cuddle and curl up on laps. That’s right, this is one affectionate, sweet dude. Snuggles is still definitely active, enjoying playtime with stuffed and rawhide toys, but he’s fond of down time with his people as well. While Snuggles loves spending time with people, he would do best as the only pet in a new home. He would be happy to share a new home with older, rugged children who can handle his silly side. If this sweet, kind, manly dog sounds like the one for you, then stop on by the shelter today to meet him. Tiptoes Tiptoes is adorable, quiet, and very sweet. This four year

old is as easy going as can be. He is a good natured guy who doesn’t ask for much. Tiptoes just wants to be treated with respect, and he will gladly return the favor. If you have a low key home and are looking to add an adorable lad to add, please stop in and meet Tiptoes. Victoria Victoria is a gorgeous, adult mixed rabbit looking for a new home to call her own. Victoria is a curious little critter who likes to pay attention as people come to meet her, but might shy away from a lot of commotion. Providing her with a habitat filled with all the rabbit necessities and giving her daily attention will break her out of her shell and make her into a great companion. If you’d like to adopt Victoria, stop on by the shelter today to meet her. Calendar of events December 15 & 16 - It’s time for photos with Santa Claws! Safe Haven Humane Society WellS – a Kitty’s letter to Santa: Dear Santa, Some of us kitties at Safe Haven are still too shy to go home for the holidays. In fact some of us know Safe Haven to be our forever home, because we’ve lived her so long and love it here. For Safe Haven to keep us healthy costs lots of money. So we’re asking for sponsorships to help pay for our care. People can sponsor us for only $10 a month. That money helps Safe Haven pay for our food and vet care to keep us happy and healthy. Another thing we’d love is for more people to become cat room buddies! We love having people visit us, brush and pet us, talk to us, and play with the laser beam and wand toys! When someone comes to visit us we all come to life and beg for your attention and space on your lap. Everyone needs friends, Santa, and we’d love to have lots of them! Cat room buddies are welcome from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. six days a week. They hang out with us, give us belly rubs, cat treats, and make us so happy. Check us out at www.safehavenhumanesociety.com and see how cute we are! Thanks, Santa! Love, Safe Haven’s Kitties

Here’s another… Dear Santa, I’m a nameless cat who has been waiting outside for a space to open up at Safe Haven’s Adoption Center. Because they’re already so full, the only way I can come in is when a kitty gets adopted and a space opens up for me. Safe Haven’s adoption center kitties want a family of their own for Christmas. Those of us who live under porches, in barns and under tarped wood piles just dream of having a safe, warm place to live and food we don’t have to hunt or scavenge for. Winter’s wind and snow is very hard on us, especially the young, the sick and the older kitties. We need a miracle to get us through the winter. If anyone can work a miracle it’s you, Santa. So please adopt and kitty and help Safe Haven open up space for us.

Maybe next Christmas we, too, will be ready for a home of our very own! Thanks, Santa! Love, The Stray Kitties Who Are Waiting… Have you checked out our off-season, indoor yard sales, in the Collectiques building next door to our Adoption Center at 1616 Post Rd., Wells each Saturday and Sunday? Visit our website or look for our sign out front to see if we are having another one before the holidays or call 207229-8314. We welcome donations for both our thrift shop and our indoor yard sales. Drop them off 11-4, Mon-Sat. For larger items, call to arrange a suitable drop-off time. Calendar of events: Dec 15: Adoption Event at Pet Life, Sanford Plaza, Rt. 109. Wonderful kitties all hoping to go home for the holidays. Dec 15 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Adoption Event at 251 Country Club Rd., Sanford. Come meet kitties waiting for a good home.

another Chance animal rescue NOrTH BerWICK – miracle for Big mike? Big Mike, a sweet shorthaired brown tiger and white neutered adult cat, was abandoned in a carrier in a snowy grocery store parking lot. He has been in foster care for over 2 years and, although he is only about 6 years old, his kidneys have begun to fail. We don’t know how long Mike has left, but he needs special care to keep him comfortable and happy during his remaining time. This includes a special diet and having fluids administered at home twice a week. Mike is one of over a dozen cats in his current foster home and, although he receives loving care, we would like him to have a real home for whatever time he has left. This could be a permanent foster situation where ACAR would pay for all food and veterinary care, with no adoption fee. The trauma of being abandoned has left him a bit timid and although he likes to be held and petted, a loud noise or aggression from other cats will send him looking for a hiding place. He may also bite when frightened so would not be good with young children. He does fine with other non-aggressive cats but needs to be away from the stress of other cats coming and going. We know it is difficult to get attached to an animal with a limited life expectancy, but Big Mike needs a Christmas miracle. He de-

serves a family of his own, a warm lap to sit on, and much more love and attention than ACAR can give him. If you would consider opening your heart and home to Big Mike, please call his foster mom, Lynn, at 207-676-5767 or e-mail lmanley@maine.rr.com to arrange to meet him. Adoption hours are Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and by appointment during the week. Location: 37 Market Street in the village of North Berwick. Our 10th anniversary Open House Open House and Bake Sale to be held at our Thrift Shop on 37 Market St., N. Berwick on Saturday, December 15, 10 am-4 pm and Sunday, December 16, 10 am-4 pm. We will have cats/kittens for adoption on both days. Proceeds from the Bake Sale will go to feeding the pets in our foster care. From cookies to fudge you will find something for your sweet tooth. All bake goods are donation from volunteers, and we

welcome anyone to bring goodies for our tables. We have several wonderful donations from local businesses that will be raffled off on Sunday. Bring two cans of cat food and get a ticket for the raffle. Tickets are normally $l each or 6/$5 but cans of cat food will get you tickets. The thrift shop will have specials and surprises for all. Come help us celebrate our anniversary pick up gifts, sweets and perhaps a loving pet. Thrift Store hours are Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturdays, and other hours by chance. One hundred percent of the profits benefit the animals in our care. Donations of items are always welcomed. Please note that donations of goods are accepted Monday through Thursday and Saturdays. Please no Friday donations. Support For life Our “Support For Life” program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. Your $10 combined with the monthly donations of others will help us meet our ongoing expenses and continue our work as a true “No Kill” organization.

Tomaszewski Steps Down as WOCSD Superintendent SHARP Awards Story & photo by Reg Bennett Given to Area WELLS – Businesses Superintendent Elaine Tomaszewski has decided to step down as superintendent and accept the position of associate executive director for the Maine School Management Association (MSMA) in Augusta. Tomaszewski, who has been WOCSD superintendent since July of 2009, announced her intentions to resign first in a letter to staff, then in a formal letter to the WOCSD School Committee on December 5. At their first-of-the-month meeting, the six-member committee, chaired by Russell Fox, voted to accept the resignation with regret. Going forward through December, Tomaszewski will continue in her duties as superintendent until an interim replacement is hired. Reached for comment, Tomaszewski talked of how the position will allow her to use the experience she has gained in Wells-Ogunquit as well as skills developed during her thirty plus years in public education. “I will be contributing to the MSMA team serving as the liaison between the national school board and Maine boards, analyzing legislation and how it will impact public schools, and supporting school superintendents in

their ever changing, very important work,” she said. During her tenure as superintendent in Wells, Tomaszewski guided the successful passage of three school budgets, embarked on a major Future Search plan to guide the District in the coming decades, and helped set in motion a major renovations project for Wells High School. Prior to coming to Wells, Tomaszewski was superintendent of schools in Freeport. She holds a B.S. Degree from the University of Maine at Farmington, a Masters of Science Degree in Communication Disorders from State University of New York at Buffalo, an M.S Degree in Educational

Administration and a certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership both from the University of Southern Maine. All totaled, she has 30 plus years experience in public education. In the fall of 2010, Tomaszewski was selected to serve on the School Superintendent National Advisory Committee. Based in Augusta and founded in 1973, the Maine School Management Association serves as a valuable resource to current school board/committee members and superintendents throughout the state. Many members of MSMA are former superintendents and former school board/committee members.

YORK COUNTY – Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette will present the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program Award (SHARP) to four Maine businesses in recognition of their rigorous safety achievement programs. Paquette recognized Deering Lumber of Kennebunk, Southridge Rehabilitation and Living Center of Biddeford, and Marden’s of Biddeford and Sanford. To qualify for SHARP, companies voluntarily undergo a comprehensive safety audit, correct all hazards identified during an onsite health and safety consultation, demonstrate that effective safety and health programs are in place, and maintain injury rates below the industry average for the last year of completed data. After awarding the SHARP designation, OSHA removes the worksite from its general scheduled inspection list for two years. If the company continues to meet all conditions of the program, the SHARP designation may be renewed for another two years. Fewer than 2,000 worksites in the United States have earned SHARP certification.

~ News ~ Historic First Christmas Service Features Three York Church Choirs

YOrK HarBOr – For the first time in its history, 102-year-old Trinity Episcopal Church in York Harbor will extend its season of worship beyond the summer to present a large-scale, community-style Christmas service on Sunday, December 23, at 4 p.m. Choral music with organ accompaniment will figure prominently in this traditional Anglican “Festival of Nine Les-

sons and Carols” service. Trinity Church’s mixed choir will be joined by the choirs of St. George’s Episcopal and First Parish Congregational churches. “This is something that Trinity Church has wanted to do for a long time,” said Holly Sault, Trinity chorister and key organizer for the event. “As a summer chapel, the historic Trinity Church structure is unheated, and the logistics of a

wintertime Christmas service there are quite demanding. This year we had many people asking for us to make the special efforts required to make it possible. This includes not only the obvious things like bringing in heaters and clearing snow, but even bringing in an organ, because Trinity’s own organ will be too cold to be pleasing to the ear. We’ve had many ‘Christmas angels’ working for months to make Trinity’s first presentation of Lessons and Carols very memorable.” The event’s organizers have opted to make the service a community-based event, to underscore the idea that all are welcome. Visitors and interdenominational guests, including Judd Knox, the president of York Hospital, will be readers at the service. The format of the Lessons and Carols service, now used worldwide, features nine short Bible readings beginning in Genesis on the birth of Jesus, interspersed with Christmas carols and hymns. “There are many things about this beautiful service that are meaningful to us,” said Rev. Craig Burlington, pastor at Trinity Church. “Our summer chapel, and the holiday-season

Lessons and Carols liturgy, both have rich histories of about a century each. Some of the earliest celebrations of Lessons and Carols, at King’s College in Cambridge, England, took place during World War II, in a chapel without heat or stained glass in the windows. Their spirit in celebrating Christmas despite adversity inspires us. We hope to welcome many members, and guests of all faiths, to Trinity York Harbor on December 23 to remember the meaning of Christmas and to celebrate the season together.” Burlington will officiate at

this historic service with Rev. Aaron Perkins, deacon at Trinity. First Parish’s director of Music Ministries Wendell Purrington will direct the combined choirs. Trinity’s choral director and organist Terrie Harman will accompany and perform on organ, and St. George’s pianist Isaac Everett on piano. Holly Seargeant will be a guest conductor. Solos will be performed by Michelle Poppleton Chumsae, Wendell Purrington, Richard Leigh, and William Wieting. All attendees to the event should dress warmly.
