those affected by breast cancer. Leon, whose son Matthew was coached by Abbott during his tenure on the Wells Mens’ Basketball team, was glad that such a prestigious award was given to Abbott. “To have orchestrated a

group of people in such a short time to raise such a huge amount of money to find a cure for such a horrific disease is such a phenomenon,” Leon said. “Abbott deserves to receive the highest award that the Rotary has to offer.” Leon also stated that the Service Above Self award, while presented to the current Lady Warriors’ Basketball team, is in recognition of past, present and future members who will continue to make a difference in their community. To cap off an already incredible evening for the Wells High School Girls’ Basketball, the Lady Warriors beat York by a score of 57-38. It was Abbott’s first victory over York during his tenure at Wells High School.

South Berwick’s Origins Celebrated in Town Hall Exhibit SOUTH BERWICK, As the town begins a year of bicentennial observances, a new exhibit in town hall chronicles the story of this community from 1713, when Berwick separated from Kittery, through South Berwick’s incorporation in 1814. Presented by the Old Berwick Historical Society, the small exhibit, entitled “Becoming South Berwick: Surviving the Revolution,” is situated by the elevators on the second floor. Those viewing the exhibit might be in for a few surprises. The center of town in the 1700s, for instance, was a couple miles from where it is today. The town meeting house stood near the corner of Brattle Street and Old South Road, now a residential neighborhood not far from the Salmon Falls River. Townspeople also had salt in their veins, it seems. Though 10 miles from the ocean, South Berwick was a seaport, with

Cemetery with staff and students. Although the convoy could not stop this year at the school because of logistical reasons, WJHS continued the tradition of holding a ceremony to honor veterans at Ocean View Cemetery. At the event there was an honor guard and members of the Knights of Columbus in attendance. WJHS Principal Chris Chessie made welcoming comments and introduced many who attended. Local living veterans were acknowledged, taps was played by Wells High School student Jacob Lareau, and wreaths were placed at six (time period) monuments by junior high students. In addition, local eighth grade winners of the Patriot’s Pen writing contest were honored. Those winners included Madison Szczygiel (1st place), Estelle Reardon (2nd), and Leah Tufts (3rd). “It’s our opportunity to demonstrate to kids how important this mission is about honoring our veterans, and remembering people who have fallen,” commented Principal Chessie. “Wreaths Across America is a teaching opportunity outside of the classroom and it is a way for us to honor and give back to some people,” said Chessie Wreaths Across America also made a stop in Kittery on Dec. 9. Maine first lady Anne LePage was in attendance for the ceremony at Kittery Trading Post.

~ News ~ Winter Solstice Celebration to be held at Kennebunk FPUU Church KENNEBUNK There’ll be dancing, singing, juggling and a little bit of magic at this year’s Winter Solstice celebration on Saturday, Dec.21 at Kennebunk’s First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. Sponsored by the Women for All Seasons, the event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and festivities will begin at 7 p.m. in the upstairs sanctuary, which is handicapped accessible. All those attending are asked to bring one nonperishable food item for the York County Shelter Program’s Food Pantry in Alfred and/or a finger food to share during the evening. Held on the longest night of the year, the ceremony is actually a celebration of the return of the light. The magic will be provided by Paul Beach, amateur magician and part-time math and physics teacher. Other entertainers will include Bruce Childress, a Kennebunk bagpiper and bagpipe maker, local juggler Bernie Reim, The Country Scottish Dance Group of Kennebunk, local singers, drummers and storytellers. Audience members are encouraged to sing Yule carols. A guided meditation and poetry reading will also be part of this midwinter celebration. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Yule log, which is based on European traditions. According to Sheila Littlefield, a member of the Women for All Seasons, “Yule has been celebrated in Europe and the Americas for many centuries. A number of the traditions from Yuletide festivals have been incorporated into our Christmas rituals, such as hanging greens and mistletoe, candle lighting, caroling and gift giving. “Ancient people knew that

the Winter Solstice was an important turning point in the year, the time when the sun would begin to return and, after steadily waning light, days would start to be longer. Celebrating together in community is also an important way for us to connect to the changing seasons, especially here in New England,” said Littlefield. While in the past, Yule logs were lit and burned for hours, this big and beautiful Yule log is ceremonial and will be illuminated with strings of electric candles. The revelry will then continue in the Parish Hall, with drumming, dancing and feasting in the tradition of Yule celebrations everywhere.

She was assisted by Norma Keim, who guided the project and research. “The biggest surprise may be how patriotic early residents were to the cause of the American Revolution,” Quater said. “As early as 1774, townspeople sent funds to patriots in Boston and voted non-cooperation with the king. “In April 1775, when Minutemen met the British in Lexington, it was said that, of all the local militias, Berwick provided the greatest number of men in proportion to its male population,” she said, noting that at the time, Berwick comprised today’s South Berwick, Berwick and North Berwick. In July 1776, residents voted to support the cause of independence, conveying to the head of their militia, Col. The society has also posted new articles about South Berwick history on its website. Beginning in January, the society will welcome the public to monthly public lectures, tours and other programs focused on the history of the town in the 1800s and 1900s. A larger bicentennial exhibit at the museum is planned for next summer, when the Counting House will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from June through October, and year-round by appointment. Along with the substation work that began this fall, later phases of the project will include the construction of a new seven-mile, 34,500-volt (34.5 kV) transmission line to feed a new substation on Powerhouse Road in Berwick. The company will also build about 11 miles of additional 34.5 kV transmission line connecting a new substation on West Lebanon Road in Lebanon with the existing Butler’s Corner Substation in Sanford. The transmission line construction is scheduled to start next spring, and the entire project is set to be complete by December of 2014. “With the support of our parent company Iberdrola USA, CMP has invested nearly $430 million in 2013 building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” said CMP President Sara Burns. “CMP’s investments in southwestern York County and elsewhere ensure long-term grid reliability and capacity for growth.” ...BETHLEHEM from page 2 pounds of food for local pantries. i al s c e p S Hol ida y l a c o L Shop Charles Dickens’ Great-Great Grandson to Perform “A Christmas Carol” or by calling 866-811-4111. Hailing from Oxford, England, Gerald Dickens is following in the legacy of his greatgreat grandfather. In 1993, he created his first one-man show, an adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” inspired by Charles’ own energetic performances of “A Christmas Carol” during his 1867 and 1868 American tours. Gerald Dickens has recorded “A Christmas Carol” which has been regularly broadcast on radio. His other work has included various appearances on features and documentaries for British television. “Dickens has total celebrity status over here,” Gerald Dickens said in a New York Times interview. “In England we’re blasé about him. Here in America audiences show me their copies of “A Christmas Carol” and hold them out reverently, as though it were an altar

cloth. The first year I did this show, I was in total shock.” Gerald’s audiences still gather after his shows for autographs and a brush with literary history. Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England which is the American friendship city of Portsmouth, N. H. This final performance of the 2013 American tour by Charles’ greatgreat grandson brings his most famous work full circle. This historic event is presented by Open Stage Events, LLC in collaboration with North Church Portsmouth by special arrangement with Byers Choice Ltd, accommodations provided by Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown.

...SAILORS from page 7 researcher months of digging through handwritten records and ship logs.” From the late 1700s to the early twentieth century, tens of thousands of merchant sailors worked tirelessly aboard Maine ships transporting cargoes between ports around the world. It was an extremely hard and often hazardous occupation, and the men and women who chose it labored in relative obscurity, their identities relegated to crew lists, pay records and the other essential paperwork of the ship’s owners. The curators at Maine Maritime Museum knew that a treasure-trove of such information was buried in the millions of pages of shipping company and personal documents in the Museum’s library vaults, but the financial and human resources

required to extract and compile that information are scarce commodities for an independent nonprofit museum such as Maine Maritime Museum. In 2008, the Council on Library and Information Resources, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, created the Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives awards program to support the identification and cataloging of special collections and archives of high scholarly value that are difficult or impossible to locate. Maine Maritime Museum applied and in 2011 was one of 19 institutions nationwide selected to receive a grant. Additional funding later came from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation in spring 2013. During the 18-month project time-frame, two contract archivists poured through hundreds of thousands of pages of

documents in 45 separate manuscript collections. The papers included numerous Maine sea captains’ business papers, crew lists and voyage accounts, some ship owners’ and customs house records, and a shipping agent’s records. The catalog database, named the “Maine Maritime Museum Manuscript Collection Online Catalog” is available in the museum’s website. Once the catalog work was completed, the archivists, along with staff, volunteers and summer interns began to build the Merchant Mariners Muster database using information about the individual sailors extracted from documents in the catalogued collections. This second database is also available on the museum’s website. “Although the collections are Maine related they are records of travels to major and minor ports all over the world,

The holiday tree is adorned with thousands of tiny white lights, yards of red and gold ribbon, and hundreds upon hundreds of decorative holiday balls. Underneath the tree sits a collection of lavishly wrapped presents and the endearing Lindt Bear. The tree will be on display in the lobby of the corporate offices until the end of December.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Final Exhibitions for 2013 Season Open for Viewing where the paintings hang as a part of the picture plane. “The find that really completes the show is the snowboard.” says curator Harding. The handcrafted, wooden snowboard is a genuine PowderJet board made in York by Jesse Loomis. The jazzy acrylic and pastel painting on the surface is by Portsmouth artist and creative designer James Valhouli. Expectations for “those who ride” include the hope of lots of snow this winter. Concurrently on view is “Mirror Image,” and recent paintings by Robin Cody. Cody has taught painting at Ringling College in Sarasota, Fla. for the past 20 years. During her recent professional leave she participated in a Visiting Artist’s Residency at the American

Academy in Rome where she worked on a series of formally staged still-life paintings. In these compositions, objects are placed in front of an old mirror and seen simultaneously from two points of view. Her colors are rich and the objects are bathed in golden reflected light. Also included in her exhibition are local scenes, such as view of Long Sands Beach, street views in Portland, and interiors of the York Beach cottage where the artist and her family spend their summers. Both exhibitions continue through Dec. 22. Hours of viewing are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m Thursday through Saturday and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday. After Dec. 22 the exhibitions are on view by chance and appointment through year’s end.

SEASON

YORK The Museums of Old York’s George Marshall Store Gallery recently opened its two final exhibitions for the 2013 season. Works by two-dozen New England artists explore the theme “Winter Expectations,” and painter Robin Cody has a one-person exhibition entitled “Mirror Image.” The winter months may not be everyone’s favorite time of year, however it is a season that many artists enjoy exploring, especially those who paint the landscape. The long shadows and golden warm light are just some of the many qualities of the season that are found in the paintings on view. “Blanketed in Snow” by York artist Michael Walek glows on the front wall in the gallery. The trees are blazed in orange and the raking light throws blue and purple shadows throughout the snow-covered landscape. Of course not everyone’s expectation of winter means snow covered ground. Lincoln Perry’s painting depicting figures on the beach remind us that some people’s idea of winter is to seek a warmer climate. The season doesn’t stop artist George Burk from painting his favorite views of the marshes in Wells and the Kennebunks. He is able to paint these views from the comfort of his van, which he as converted into a studio on wheels. Portsmouth artist, Amy Bernger, takes winter refuge in her studio at home and is very content to paint still-life scenes with the view of the winter landscape out the window. Winter bouquets of dried hydrangea flowers, winter oranges, and other still life objects are formally arranged on tables bathed in light coming from another window source. Although a winter theme might seem confining in scope, curator Mary Harding has gathered a wide range of media interpreting the theme. The exhibition includes numerous oil and acrylic paintings by Maine painters, Tom Curry, Madeleine Hopkins, Bill Irvine, and John Winship. New Hampshire area artists include Arthur DiMambro, Grant Drumheller, Brett Gamache, Tom Glover, Don Lent and Kathi Smith. Two-shaped paintings by Maine artist Sam Cady catch many visitors off guard because of the illusions that they create. The outline of an island in his “Gull View, Sand and Little Sand after a Snow” and the cutout of architecture and a long pier in “Sun on Porches and Dock after a Heavy Snow” require the viewer to complete the image by accepting the wall

Winning Ideas for Beating Winter Blues Nearly 150 days separate the last day of the winter holidays from the first unofficial day of summer - Memorial Day. After holiday decorations get packed away, and winter sets in, it’s not uncommon to experience a touch - or more of winter boredom. Some people may find themselves in a rut during those long 150 days. Fortunately, a number of tactics can help perk up your spirits. Here is a handful to consider as you enter 2014: Escape the routine Traveling during winter has many benefits. In many areas of the country, winter months are slower business times for hotels and resorts, and you may find great deals. What’s more, breaking up the routine and going somewhere new and exciting - or relaxing may help alleviate winter blues. Immersing yourself in relaxation and pampering could be just what you need to release winter tensions. Places like club resorts which offer accom-

but you can still experience a change in perspective when you make changes in your home environment. Kitchen and bathroom renovations are top choices and winter is a great time to tackle those projects. If you have the budget, by all means - go big. But if your budget is more modest, don’t despair; even small changes like new shower heads, faucets and accessories can give a room a spirit-lifting new look and feel. Doubt the power of a shower head to transform a bath? Make your own holidays Who says you have to limit spirit-lifting celebrations to specific days of the year? If gathering with family and friends around the dinner table makes you happy, why not choose one day a month and have everyone over? The Basics of Boosting Metabolism Men and women looking to shed a few pounds and keep those pounds off often look for ways to boost their metabolisms. Some may not know just what metabolism means, and though it is a complicated combination of processes, metabolism is perhaps best explained as the sum of those processes, each of which is instituted to convert food into energy. So it’s no surprise that so many people, especially men and women whose metabolisms have begun to slow down, want to boost their metabolism and turn that food into energy more quickly. Though metabolism is a collection of complicated processes, boosting metabolism can be rather easy. The followlocal indoor playground. In February, your husband might opt for a family bowling night. Allowing each member of the family to choose a destination gets everyone involved and excited. Plus, unusual family outings are a great way to brighten winter days. The days between New Year’s and spring don’t have to drag. Just step outside the routine - whether through travel or innovation at home - to help beat the winter blues. ing are a handful of ways to do so, which can help men and women reach their fitness goals. Eat the right foods and eat more often. Many adults have been turned on to the concept of grazing, an approach to diet wherein adherents eat small portions of food every two to three hours instead of the more traditional three square meals per day. But grazing is only effective when men and women eat the right foods. Each small meal should still have nutritional value just as if it were a large meal. When eating smaller meals, include healthy sources of protein and fiber. Vegetables tend to be especially beneficial because they are high in fiber, a non-digestible carbohydrate that is hard for the body to break down. As the body works hard to break down fiber, it’s burning energy and boosting its metabolism along the way. Fish is another potentially beneficial food for those looking to boost their metabolisms, as studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils increase the levels of fat-burning enzymes in the body while decreasing the body’s level of fat-storage enzymes. Eating more often benefits the body because doing so stimulates metabolism, reassuring the body that food will See STRENGTH page 15...

On Thanksgiving morning, the studio hosted two sold-out “Food Raising” yoga classes focusing on themes of gratitude and generosity. The class “fee” that morning was two bags of food or household items per participant, with 800 pounds of goods total collected for the York Community Food Pantry. “In this season of giving, the ongoing work that Yoga On York does to support charitable Seacoast organizations like ours is truly meaningful and inspirational,” said Martha Hesse, a regular volunteer at the York Community Food Pantry. “This year’s substantial class donations from the Yoga On York community will certainly make a difference this winter for those who are hungry and in need in our town.” Yoga On York is also hosting its annual holiday outreach program for underprivileged teenagers under the supervision of the Division of Children and Family Protective Services in Rochester, N.H. Health & Fitness Easy Ways to Enjoy a Flu-Free Winter

Spending significant time in close proximity to others indoors can make people more susceptible to the flu. As a result, winter, when people typically spend more time indoors than outdoors, is often dominated by the sniffling and sneezing synonymous with the flu. But men and women can take steps to protect themselves from the flu this season. Get a flu shot. Some people prefer to avoid getting a flu shot because

they want to build up their natural immunities or they believe the shots can make them sick. But most flu shots contain an inactive virus that will not make you sick, and will only trigger your body’s immune system response to a foreign invader. It can take a couple of weeks for full immunity to develop, so it’s possible to still get sick even after a flu shot has been administered. Also, a flu shot does not guarantee recipients won’t get the flu. People can still get the flu after

receiving a flu shot, as it may be another strain of the virus. But flu shots are largely effective. Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes and cigars can affect the immune system and also compromise the body in a number of different ways. Smoking can disable mechanisms in your breathing passageways that serve as natural repellants to the flu. These include the hairs on the lungs that brush away contaminants. Smoking also can create holes in

the lining of lower air passages, and such holes can make people more susceptible to illness, including the flu. Smokers who get the flu typically find that the flu further complicates their ability to breathe.

fluids expelled during coughing, sneezing and even talking. This is why doctors recommend that anyone who has the flu stay home from work or school until they are fully recovered.

Avoid sick people. When those around you are sick, it is best to keep your distance, especially when those people have the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that people with the flu can spread it to others up to six feet away. Flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets of bodily

Be especially cautious when pregnant. According to Dr. Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease specialist at Duke University Medical Center, women who are pregnant are at a higher risk of complications and even death from influenza. Doctors don’t fully understand why, but many feel that because the flu can compromise a woman’s ability to breathe well, this makes it difficult for oxygen to be passed on to the fetus. Pregnant women should speak with their obstetricians about the safety of the flu shot.

The healing begins here. There’s new hope for non-healing wounds. Don’t let a wound slow you or a family member down. The team at York Hospital Wound Healing & Hyperbaric medicine are experts in advanced wound care and are committed to providing a safe and comfortable return to health and mobility. Our multi-disciplinary approach speeds recovery, and our passion for centering care around patients and families provides unbelievable experiences for all.

The healing begins here!

Get plenty of rest and good food. Adequate sleep and a healthy diet can bolster your immune system. It’s important to stay hydrated, eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and prioritize getting a good night’s sleep each night. Beware of homeopathic remedies. Always check with a doctor before adding any natural remedies to your flu-fighting repertoire. While some supplements like elderberry syrup, zinc and oscillococcinum can mitigate symptoms of the flu, there’s no solid evidence that these items offer any preventative value. Homeopathic remedies also can interfere with medications or may be dangerous to a developing fetus, so do not take these substances without first checking with a doctor. BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Manufacturer Plans Further Expansion

AUGUSTA Touting it as another indication that Maine’s economy is headed in the right direction, Governor Paul R. LePage today conveyed his congratulations to Ntension Corporation of Hermon on its planned expansion. Ntension is a wholesale manufacturer of tensionfabric structures. The business is preparing to expand this spring into a brand-new 40,000 square-foot facility, allowing it to grow its work-

force by more than 20 jobs over the next two years. The company has been working closely with Governor LePage Account Executive Jaimie Logan and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) in an effort to access incentives to help make this expansion a reality. “I commend Ntension on its continued growth and commitment to providing additional quality jobs to Maine people, said Governor Paul R. LePage. “I am also pleased

Assumptions Can Be Dangerous to Investors Every day of our lives, we make assumptions. We assume that the people we encounter regularly will behave in the manner to which we are accustomed. We assume that if we take care of our cars, they will get us to where we want to go. In fact, we need to make assumptions to bring order to our world. But in some parts of our life — such as investing — assumptions can prove dangerous. Of course, not all investment-related assumptions are bad. But here are a few that, at the least, may prove to be counter-productive: “Real estate will always increase in value. Up until the 2008 financial crisis, which was caused, at least partially, by the “housing bubble, most people would probably have said that real

that our various economic incentives played a key role in facilitating this expansion and helping attract and retain much-needed private investment and new job opportunities for Mainers. “Ntension is bursting at the seams, said Governor LePage Account Executive Jaimie Logan. “They’ve chosen not to advertise recently because they did not wish to recruit more business than they can adequately serve in a timely manner. This is not only a huge tribute to their success and growth potential, but also their dedication to providing exceptional client service.

Ntension serves as just one example of what the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia recently characterized as a “booming economy in Maine. The Fed noted that Maine moved to one of the 10 best states in the nation in their leading index forecast for economic growth over the coming months. The index was released a few days after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued its employment data for Maine, which showed that the past three years of private-sector job growth have been the best three years for Maine in over a decade. The company plans to

complete its new manufacturing facility in May 2014, with an estimated workforce of 80 to 90 people by 2017. DECD incentive programs offer eligible businesses the chance to greatly reduce or virtually eliminate state taxes for up to 10 years when they create new, quality jobs in certain business sectors, or move existing jobs in those sectors to Maine. Governor LePage Account Executives help businesses access these necessary resources and create a more competitive, attractive economic climate for private investment.

estate is always a good investment. But since then, we’re all more painfully aware that housing prices can rise and fall. That isn’t to say that real estate is always a bad investment — as a relatively small part of a diversified portfolio, it can be appropriate, depending on your goals and risk tolerance. But don’t expect endless gains, with no setbacks. “Gold will always glitter. During periods of market volatility, investors often flee to gold, thereby driving its price up. But gold prices will fluctuate, sometimes greatly, and there are risks in all types of gold ownership, whether you’re investing in actual bars of gold or gold “futures or the stocks of goldmining companies. “I can avoid all risks by sticking with CDs. See ASSUME page 18...

The New Year Provides Opportune Time to Purchase a New Vehicle Many people like to begin the new year with a fresh start, making resolutions to change bad habits and improve their overall health. Others may be interested in changes they can make that will present new opportunities, such as career goals or relocating. While health and careerrelated resolutions are popular come the dawn of a new year, many men and women also ponder the benefits of buying a new car when the calendar year starts anew. Professionals in the automotive industry do not always agree as to when is the best time to buy a new or preowned car. Some will tell you to shop on rainy days or near closing time from the dealership, and some shoppers insist that they will only buy a new car at the end of a month. Unfortunately, there is no magical day when buyers are guaranteed to get the best bargains on new or preowned automobiles. Oftentimes, the best time to buy a new car is when buyers are in the best financial position to make such purchases. For a variety of reasons,

the dawn of a new year may be a good time to buy a new vehicle. With the holidays behind them, buyers may have more disposable income to put toward down payments. Cash gifts received from friends and family during the holidays can go a long way toward financing a new vehicle purchase. What’s more, many businesses give their employees year-end bonuses as a token of appreciation for a year of hard work. When all of these financial factors are put together, buyers may find the new year is a great time to buy a new car. New model year vehicles will need homes on dealers’ lots, motivating dealers to mark down last year’s models at consumerfriendly prices. Dealerships often slash prices on older models beginning in October and December, but such discounted vehicles are often still available at even greater discounts come January. Promotions and holidays seem to go hand-in-hand. In the United States, Presidents’ Day, which occurs in mid-February, is a prime time for manufacturers to drum up business during a traditionally slow buying time. Prospective buyers can do their

“The price of my investment has gone up — I must have made the right decision.” This assumption could also be made in reverse — that is, you might think that, since the price of your investment has dropped, you must have made the wrong choice. This type of thinking causes investors to hold on to some investments too long, in the hopes of recapturing early gains, or selling promising in-

vestments too soon, just to “cut their losses.” Don’t judge investments based on short-term performance; instead, look at fundamentals and long-term potential. “If I need long-term care, Medicare will cover it.” You may never need any type of long-term care, but if you do, be prepared for some big expenses. The national average per year for a private room in a nursing home is nearly $84,000, according to a recent survey by Genworth, a financial security company. This cost, repeated over a period of years, could prove catastrophic to your financial security during your retirement. And, contrary to many people’s assumptions, Medicare may only pay a small percentage of longterm care costs. You can help yourself by consulting with a financial professional, who can provide you with strategies designed to help cope with longterm care costs. You can’t avoid all assumptions when you’re investing. But by staying away from questionable ones, you may avoid being tripped up on the road toward your financial goals. ~ News ~ CMP Offers Holiday Lighting Safety Tips AUGUSTA Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is urging its customers to follow some simple electrical safety tips so they can have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. In addition to testing smoke detectors and planning emergency fire escape routes for your family, people should keep the following safety tips in mind:

water a day. Remove the tree promptly after the holiday or when it becomes dry.

• The combination of dried Christmas tree limbs and hot lights can be dangerous, so keep the tree fresh. Before you put the tree in its stand, cut its base at a 45-degree angle so it can absorb water. Water the tree liberally — the average tree can consume between a quart and a gallon of

• Don’t overload electrical circuits or extension cords. Follow the directions on cord labels regarding connecting lights strings and extension cords. Make sure the cords are out of the way so that nobody trips over them.

• Decorate the tree with miniature lights. They produce much less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree. • Keep flammable decorations away from the tree’s lights. Also make sure that electric window candles do not touch drapes or other flammable objects.

• Carefully inspect light cords,

Richard R. DuPont, Sr., 95 KENNEBUNK - Richard R. DuPont, Sr., 95, of Kennebunk, died Saturday evening, Dec. 7, 2013 at Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation. Born in Worcester, Mass. on May 3, 1918, a son of Eli and Florence (Brennan) DuPont, he graduated from Commerce High School and attended Northeastern University. On June 21, 1947, he married the former Goldie G. Ramsey. They shared 60 wonderful years together until her death in 2007. Richard (Dick) was a sales representative for Mogul Corporation, specializing in industrial water treatment. The corporation then became Dexter Corporation (now Invitrogen), from where he retired in 1983. Following his retirement, Dick and Goldie moved to Maine. In 60 years of marriage, they were rarely, if ever, apart from each other. They literally did everything together; from crafts, traveling, walking the beaches, exploring small shops and having breakfast together at several venues. Dick enjoyed woodworking in his basement shop and making furniture and other items. Goldie would complete his projects by adding her ar-

tistic talents. When not woodworking, Dick always had a “do-it-yourself” project going on around the home. While living in Massachusetts, he was very active in Worcester Toastmasters #1193, where he was president and Toastmaster of the Year in 1965. He was also an active member of the National Association of Power Engineers, Chapter 32, in Worcester. In addition to his loving

It one of the national dishes of Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. This dish is a classic corn, beans, and potato or cucurbita soup well known along the South American Andes. Chimichurri is made from finely chopped parsley (an alternative version uses coriander), minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, and white or red wine vinegar. Flavorings such is coriander, paprika, cumin, thyme, lemon, basil, cilantro and bay leaf may be included. In its red version, tomato and red bell pepper may be added. It can also be used as a marinade for grilled meat. Cassava is a long tuberous starchy root that has a brown fibrous skin and snowy white interior flesh. Another Chance Animal Rescue

NORTH BERWICK Meet Debby Debby is a young adult, brown, tiger kitty that came into the rescue as a stray mom with a crew of kittens. Debby’s kittens have all been placed with loving families and now it is Debby who is asking for your attention. Debby is very well adjusted, social, loving and most definitely deserves an opportunity to have her own loving family. Debby will do well with children, all other members of the family, cats and small dogs. It is unknown howDebby will do around large dogs, but cats a quick to adjust. Debby is already spayed, her vaccinations are current, she been wormed and has passed her wellness exam. Debby would like an indoor only home where she will be safe and secure, and not have to fear of being a stray again. If you think that Debby would make a nice addition to your family circle, please stop by the adoption center to file an application. Debby will be interviewing for new parents at the adoption center located in Sanford on Saturday.

In addition to our feature pet of the week, pretty Ms. Debby, ACAR still has a nice selection (but shrinking) number of kittens, a great selection of young adult cats and a large selection of older adult cats with a Christmas wish to be with a loving family of their own for the Holidays. Adoption hours are on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ACAR’s locations in North Berwick ans Sanford. Thrift Store Hours The Thrift store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other hours are “by chance.” One hundred percent of the profits benefit the animals in ACAR’s care. Donations of items are always welcomed. Please note that donations of goods are accepted Monday through Thursday, and Saturdays. Please no Friday donations. Support For Life

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Fee-Waived Small Animals For a limited time, all small animals at the Animal Welfare Society have had their adoption fees waived. That means you can add a tiny, furry, adorable, cute critter to your home at no cost; all they ask for is a donation if possible. AWS has got rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs, birds, and even degus all eager to find new homes. So hurry on in today to find a teeny new treasure to add to your household Zeek Meet Zeek, a 12-year old Pomeranian Mix. Zeek may be 12, but he still loves to hop around and play with his

people. His high energy puppy days behind him, Zeek now takes pleasure in the simpler things. He loves being close to his people, particularly if it involves cuddling. Zeek is a friendly fellow and has a gentle personality, so he would be happy to share a new home with some other dogs, dogsavvy cats and gentle children of all ages. Of course, just because he’s old it doesn’t make him lazy. He likes to take regular strolls around the neighborhood with his people to stretch his legs and explore his surroundings. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Christmas for the Animals Join Safe Haven and celebrate the holiday at their open house this Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their cat rooms will be open for visits and purrs. Celebrate with free refreshments, support their bake sale and enjoy the fun and oldfashioned spirit of Christmas. Although there is no yard sale in December, please keep your unique and quality donations coming. Save Haven is still welcome donations. Their thrift shop is in special need of small tables and furnishings, lighting, book cases and shelving. They also need additional volunteers to help keep the shop clean and organized. ACAR’s “Support For Life” program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. Your $10 combined with the monthly donations of others will help us meet our ongoing expenses and continue our work as a true “No Kill” organization. Please help ACAR continue our mission to provide a safe environment and quality care for abandoned, abused, and lost pets by becoming a “Support for Life” member and pledging a monthly donation. It is through your generosity that the organization exists and will be here to serve the community for years to come. any household. If you’d like to adopt Zeek then stop on by the shelter today to meet him. Bill Ack! It’s Bill the Cat! Thankfully, it’s not that “Bill the Cat,” you won’t have to worry about him defecting to Russia or running for President. No, this Bill is a 7-year old short-haired fellow who is quite the talker. He must have taken speaking lessons with some Siamese in the past, because when he starts talking,

Sailor Sailor, the lively longhaired kitty, is still looking for a family and a home where he can run and play. He’s a beautiful cat whose current family finds him too active for their quiet lifestyle. Sailor is affectionate too,and a wonderful addition to your active family. He’d love people who would play with him. Check him out on their site at www.safehavenhumanesociety.org. Anastasia Anastasia, aka “Butterball,” is a comical, playful, “roundish” short-haired torti. Safe Haven rescued her from someone who couldn’t afford her medical care. X-rays and blood work revealed she was suffering from an acute urinary tract infection, bladder stones and a severe case of intestinal parasites. Anastasia was in awful pain, yet she remained sweet and grateful. All at Save Haen fell in love with her instantly. She is healthy now, requires no medication, and is adorable and adoptable. you’ll know it. Bill likes having plenty of room to roam around in. He’ll find windows, wherever they may be, to look out of, and cozy spots to nap in. Bill is a friendly fellow, but he does also like his space from time to time. When he’s comfy, Bill is one of the calmest and most easy going cats around. When he’s not, he’ll follow his curiosity around a room and update you on his wanderings until he finds his spot. Bill would be happy to share a new home

up and down the stairs and romp through our shop. She’s outgoing, loves attention, petting and belly rubs. When relaxed she lies on her back, her front feet kneading the air in bliss. Anastasia needs and deserves a great home. She suffered from lack of love and commitment, but has recovered medically and emotionally. She’s ready to move on to her new life. So how about it? Please come to see how precious she is. You’ll love her. Building Fund Safe Haven’s building fund is looking for donors to help them build or buy their future home. Safe Haven needs to relocate to a permanent location and need funding to afford a down payment. They recently received a $1,000 donation from Paul and Helen, and want to thank them so much for this showing of support. If you wish to make a single or recurring monthly gift to Safe Haven, please call Joyce at 207229-8314. with other respectful cats. Meet Batman, an adult mixed-breed rabbit who likes to spend his nights fighting crime. This fluff ball really likes to spend his nights the same as his days, getting love and attention from his people. Batman would enjoy having a habitat filled with toys, treats, comfy blankets, and a high-tech computer so he can keep tabs on the Riddler. Batman gets along great with kids - as you might expect - and would make for a great addition to just about any household. Cat person, bird person, plant person, Batman can gets along with pretty much everyone. This handsome fellow won’t ever be a bane to his new family, just a friendly, happy, loving companion. New Freedom Laser Gives Confidence Boost to Community KITTERYThere is nothing more beautiful than confidence. Or so believes Rosemarie Golini, owner of the popular New Freedom Laser in Kittery, a business she founded 15 years ago to provide healthy, safe cosmetic laser services to help people build or regain confidence. While the cosmetic industry has gained a bad rap over the years, Golini has remained loyal to her belief that beauty does not start and stop on the surface. “My initial experience with laser treatment was actually as a recipient,” revealed Golini. “When I needed laser procedures it was not on a cosmetic level but, on a medical level. I experienced first-hand the benefits going beyond appearance, so I continue to operate with that mentality of healing and treatment versus a temporary or superficial fix.” Golini’s personal connec-

So much so that during her early years while working in electrolysis, Golini was approached by researchers from Mass General Hospital to test out one of the first commercial lasers used for hair removal. While the approach had its

skeptics, Golini believed in the potential of laser treatments to be a healthier, cleaner solution to hair removal and skin rejuvenation. And her instincts proved right. SPORTS York High School Honors 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer YORK More than 70 people gathered at the York American Legion Post home on Dec. 1 for the induction ceremony for the third class of the York High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2013 inductees included Garret Bertolini (1982), Andrea (Little) Limbago (1994), John Bridges (1954), Christopher Powers (2005), Joanna Brown (1994), Glenn Todd (1980), Peggy (Hilton) d’Entremont (1975), Frank Twombly (1964), Michaela Franey (2007) and Charlie Welner (1966). “It was like a reunion,” York High School Athletic Director Ted Welch said. “The whole effort has been a wonderful experience and a wonderful success.” The Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to honor those who have given so much to York High School The achievements of each 2013 inductee are documented below. Glenn Todd Todd participated in three sports and was recognized for his achievements in all. In basketball his shooting style and court awareness made him one of the best in York history. He finished his basketball career having scored 1,184 points, an average of 21 points a game. His three-year total was, at the time, the record for points scored and was accomplished without the three-point line. He was the captain of both basketball and baseball teams his senior year. Since his graduation in 1980, Todd has given back to the community through assisting in basketball at the high school, the middle school and the Recreation Department. Joanna “Jo” Brown Brown competed at the highest level in three sports from 1990 to 1994. Outstanding in soccer and softball, it was in basketball that she enjoyed the greatest success. She scored 993 points and pulled down 745 rebounds, both fifth all-time, in just three years of varsity play. She is one of just three women to score over 400 points in a season. She helped lead her basketball team to State Championships in 1992 and 1994 and helped win a State Championship in soccer in 1993. Brown went on to an out-

standing career at the University of Southern Maine and has been inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the Little East Conference Hall of Fame and the USM Hall of Fame. John Bridges Before all-star teams were common and records were kept, star athletes still existed and were known by their contemporaries for their accomplishments. Bridges was one of those athletes, competing in varsity football, basketball, and baseball. He was universally recognized as one of the best players on York’s 6-man football teams, helping the Wildcats to great success and two undefeated seasons. He was part of one of the greatest scoring games in York history in 1953, when the team went undefeated and had an 83-0 win over Dixfield. He won an award as a freshman for his outstanding football plays and helped lead his basketball team to four straight winning seasons in the old Southern York County League. In basketball, Bridges was named team’s most valuable player in his junior year. Bridges served as captain of all three teams on which he played. Michaela Franey Franey played two sports in an outstanding way from 2003 to 2007. A standout in softball, Franey’s greatest achievements were in field hockey. Franey was a four year starter and held the record for most points scored when she completed her career with 56 goals and 45 assists. A three-time Western Maine Conference All-Star, she was named to the first team all three years. She was named Western Maine Player of the year in field hockey in 2006 and 2007 and was a Miss Maine Field Hockey Finalist in 2007. She was a three-year starter on the softball team and her teams won three consecutive Western Maine Championships in her last 3 years. Margaret (Hilton) D’Entremont Hilton was a three-sport athlete from 1971-75. She excelled at both basketball and track, while also playing in the beginning days of field hockey. She scored 643 points in just three years of varsity play

Berwick Academy Soccer Standouts Earn EIL Honors SOUTH BERWICK The Berwick Academy Girls’ Soccer team finishded their season with a 10-8-1 record due to strong, all-round performances from their players. As the EIL winter sports season starts up, standouts from the fall were honored and local stars represented their team well. Junior Brook Downey from Eliot was a Foster’s Dream Team High Honorable Mention selection in 2012 and followed that up with a stellar 2013 season. Downey led the Berwick Bulldogs in points and notched seven goals, with three of them being game winners. For her career at Berwick, Downey has scored 16 goals and assisted on another nine. She has played the brunt of her minutes in the most competitive games as a midfielder rather than her usual position as a striker. in basketball, while leading the team in rebounds and blocks. She helped lead her team to the semi-finals in the first ever Western Maine Basketball Tournament in the 1974-75 season. D’Etremont is still the only girl to win the Ann McManus Award twice, doing so in 1974 and 1975. She was a two-time track captain, State Champion in the high jump in 1975 and helped her girls track team to the runner-up spot in 1974 and York’s first outdoor track State Championship in 1975. In the early 1970’s, it was D’Etremont’s speech in front of the York School Board that helped save the girls track program from being eliminated for budgetary reasons. Chris Powers Powers was a three-sport athlete taking part in baseball, soccer and hockey, but it was on the ice where he made the biggest impression, playing four seasons - two as captain - and achieving Western Maine Conference all-star status each year. He captained the baseball team his senior season. He led the baseball team in home runs and batting average in his senior season and was named the most valuable player. Along with the numbers he compiled, he was acknowledged on the rink and in the locker room as a member of one of the best hockey teams in York’s history.

Brook Downey led the Berwick Academy Girl’s Soccer team in scoring for the 2013 season and was named an EIL All League Player.

For her outstanding season, Downey was named an EIL All League Player. Junior Parker Johnson of Kittery Point was also recognized for her performance on the

pitch in 2013. Johnson earned an EIL Honorable Mention selection. She will look to add to her list of EIL accolades as she has been named as a captain for the 2014 season.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, We bought a Windows 7 Dell computer last November and had techs set it up, so we thought we had Panda Antivirus. Then, when it ran out we bought Panda Anti-virus 2014 and we could not install it, so we called the Panda Company, and according to their tech, we found out that our computer was in terrible shape. We had 55,000 errors, and the reason might have been that when we bought the computer it had Norton. and then our “geeks” installed Panda, and the tech said neither could function well. Is that true?. They said they had a partnership with Advanced Tech Support and I turned over the computer to them, and for $250 they fixed everything. However, I was told to call a number, and the gal said we needed Malware protection which started at $500 (until I yelled and came down to another $250). We have no idea if that is really necessary for two old people who only use online for email and to surf the net. Thank you for your wonderful column and help. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, It sounds like you have been the victim of a scammer. I am going to guess that

when you looked up the phone number for the Panda company you went online and searched for Panda tech support and dialed the number you found as a result of that search. The only problem with searching online for tech support numbers is that anyone can make a website that looks like a certain company and put their phone number on it. Then, when you or I call looking for support, they start out making you think they are from the company, but quickly try to convince you that you need to pay them large amounts of money to remove problems that you really don’t have in the first place. What can you do now? There are really two problems that need to be resolved. The first is that you gave your credit card information to scammers. Contact your bank or credit card company and explain the situation. Hopefully, you will be able to reverse the charges, and you will probably need to get a new card. The second problem is that your computer has been compromised. When you let them take over your computer, it was like giving them access to every document, user name and password stored on your computer. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there is no way to be sure that they didn’t

install additional tracking software while they were pretending to remove the problems that didn’t really exist. You will probably need to take your computer to a local repair shop that you can trust, and have them go over your computer. They should be able to clean out your computer and set up protection for far less than what you thought you were paying to the scammers. For example, I have a package that includes cleaning any existing viruses and malware out of your computer, installing both antivirus and anti-malware programs, with a one-year warranty against future infections for less than $200. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Downloading internet pictures may infect my computer with a virus. If I instead print such a picture on my printer would it also carry a virus? And would it be safe to scan this picture into my computer? Thanks, Robert Dear Robert, It is true that some pictures online can contain viruses. Unfortunately, in order for you to see a picture on your computer you have to download it first, so by the time you see a picture on your browser, if that picture was

infected and your antivirus program didn’t block the virus, you are already infected. Since you have to view a picture in your browser in order to print it, the damage would already be done. A better suggestion is to make sure you have a good antivirus program installed, and make sure you keep it updated. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Love your site and would love your newsletter. How do I make Gmail my default mail server in Irfranview. I do not use outlook express. Thanks for your time, Flo Dear Flo, Thanks for your email. I added you to my weekly email

list.

Unfortunately, you can’t add Gmail as your default email server in Irfanview, because Gmail is web based email and you are not using an actual email program. There is, however, a way you can work around this problem. Simply open a new message in Gmail and attach the images from there. Here is how: 1. Open Gmail and click “compose” to start a new message. 2. Fill in the email address you are sending the message to and the subject of your message. 3. Click the paper clip icon See COMPUTER page 39...

read or hear. Suggestions abound as to ways to significantly improve metabolism. Unfortunately, many of these suggestions boost metabolism but not enough to help people lose weight, which is the ultimate goal of many people looking to boost their metabolisms. For example, green tea has its proponents who feel it can have a significant impact on metabolism thanks to EGCG, a compound found in the tea that has been proven to elevate metabolism. However, the impact of EGCG on boosting metabolism is negligible, and therefore won’t make much of an impact on a person’s weight. The same can be said about capsaicin, an active component found in chili peppers that some feel boosts metabolism enough to promote weight loss. Though capsaicin can boost metabolism slightly, studies have shown that influence is not significant enough to affect a person’s weight.

Modern technology may be a reason why waist sizes are getting bigger. Heating and cooling systems may be must-have items, but when the body is too comfortable, it burns less energy to stay warm in the winter or comfortably cool in the summer. A study from the National Institute of Health Clinical Center found that people who slept in a room kept at 66 degrees fahrenheit burned 7 percent more calories than those who slept in a room at 75 degrees fahrenheit. Sleeping in a cooler room may just be the easiest way for men and women to boost their metabolisms. Boosting metabolism and shedding extra pounds is a goal for many men and women. But while metabolism is a complex set of processes, the various ways to effectively boost that metabolism can be quite simple. This article was provide by MetroCreative. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by MetroCreative articles.

Business was driven by her use of healthy alternatives to toxic cosmetic treatments and her interest in community fundraisers. Less than six months in the Green Alliance, New Freedom Laser partnered with the nonprofit Arts in Reach (AIR) organization to help raise money for young girls to build confidence and leadership skills through visual and preforming art. Collaborating with the Arts in Reach program was a priority for Golini, having learned about the organization through the Green Alliance. Her personal value of confidence-building made the partnership perfect for the first New Freedom Laser fundraiser event held Nov. 15 and 16, in which discounted services were offered by appointment to friends and supporters of AIR, with 50 percent of total proceeds going directly back to the Arts in Reach program. “I admire the AIR organization for the way they inspire young girls to believe in themselves.” Touts Golini. “Confidence is like a super power. When you have it, anything is possible.” This article was written by Tricia Dinkel, Assistant Director at Green Alliance. For more information on Green Alliance, call 603-817-4694.

...FAME from page 31 Known as a tough running back he was also a stellar receiver, scoring numerous touchdowns. During his career, the Wildcats went undefeated twice, winning the Class D state championships in 1963 and 1964. He was a guard on the basketball team regularly scoring 20 points a game. As a catcher on the baseball, team he led York to top three finishes in the Southern York County League. As a senior he won the coveted Myron F. Cox award for skills and sportsmanship in athletics. Andrea (Little) Limbago Limbago was an outstanding two sport athlete, playing basketball and soccer at a very high level and winning many individual honors and leading her teams to four state championships. She scored 1,165 points and gathered in 905 rebounds - both third all-time - as a four-year starter for the basketball team. She also had 310 steals. She was All-Western Maine Conference three times and was named winner of the Mike DiRenzo MVP/Sportsman in 1993. She was named to the McDonald’s all-star team in 1994. Basketball teams on which

Limbago played compiled a 71-13 record in four-years, winning a pair of Western Maine and State Championships. In 1994, Limbago was named the Robert E. Butler Sr. Award recipient as the top player/ sportsman in basketball in the Western Maine Conference. Soccer teams on which she played also won a pair of state championships. In 1991 and 1993 she was named all-state in soccer as well. Charles “Charlie” Welner Coach Welner served in York for only seven years, but during that span his contributions, especially in football, were remarkable. From 1959 to 1966, he was involved with the football, basketball and girls’ softball programs. He became the head coach of football in 1963, after four years as an assistant coach, helping with the transition from eight-man to 11-man teams. As the head coach for three years, he led his teams to three consecutive undefeated seasons, winning state championships three years in a row from 1963 to 1965. His stay in York was cut short by family commitments, but he said on his retirement after 53 years in education that “the seven years at York were at the top of my list.”

~ News ~ Dear Sarah, First, let me share with you how to close those pesky fullscreen apps in Windows 8. Then I will address the game issue. When you want to close an app in Windows 8 that doesn’t have any obvious way to close it, jut point your cursor to the very top of your screen. When the cursor turns into a hand, hold the mouse button down and drag the cursor all the way down to the bottom of the screen. This will close the app. As far as solitaire games go, there is no way to get the games from earlier versions of Windows to install on your Windows 8 computer. However, I long ago purchased a solitaire game from www.solsuite.com, which includes over 500 versions of solitaire, including freecell, spider and probably any other version that you can think of. They are a great little company that keeps updating their game. It is currently on special for $9.99 instead of the usual $19.95. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Send your message as usual. Hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Hi, I love your newsletter! Last year my husband got me a new laptop for Christmas. My home desktop is Windows 7, so I figured I’d just have to get used to the new system. The one thing I hate about Windows 8 is that Solitaire and other card games are so different from previous versions. All of the games (just like all the other “apps”) take over the whole screen instead of opening in a window. And there is no way to turn them off without shutting down the computer - at least I haven’t found one. When I close a game, it’s at the same place when I open it again, which makes me think it’s been running in the background the whole time. So my question is, are there earlier versions of Solitaire, Spider, Freecell, etc., that will run on Windows 8? Thank you, Sarah
