In Memory of George H. W. Bush 1924-2018

“As Americans, we have no more solemn duty than laying a great patriot to rest. In President George H.W. Bush, here lies such a man.” Photo and quote from Speaker Paul Ryan’s Facebook page.

NATIONWIDE George H. W. Bush, 41st president of the United States, died on Friday, November 30 at the age of 94. Long admired by many as a gentleman and statesman who dedicated himself to serving others, tributes and accolades for the man quickly poured in from around the world. A member of what’s often referred to as “the greatest generation”, George H. W. Bush served in World War II as a Navy aviator and was shot down in combat. After the war he attended and graduated from Yale University and then moved to Texas

with his family where he found success in the oil business. Not long after that he became active in politics and won the election to the House of Representative from Texas’s 7th district in 1966. In 1971, then president Nixon appointed him as Ambassador to the United Nations. Under Gerald Ford, Bush was appointed as Chief of the Liaison Office in China and then made Director of Central Intelligence. Bush ran for president in 1980 but was defeated by Ronald Reagan who then chose him as his running mate and eventually his Vice President for his eight-year

tenure. In 1988 Bush ran a successful presidential campaign defeating Michael Dukakis to become the first incumbent vice president in 152 years to be elected president. Following his loss to Bill Clinton in 1992, George H.W. Bush remained active in humanitarian activities, advising his two sons in their political aspirations, spent time at the family compound in Kennebunkport, and even surprised the public when he skydived on his 90th birthday. Wreaths Across America Continues Honor Veterans STATEWIDE What began as a pilgrimage by a Maine wreath maker in a single truck to deliver 5,000 wreaths he donated to Arlington National Cemetery in 1992 has become a recognized volunteer effort that honors and recognizes all veterans from the Revolutionary War to present.

Today Wreaths Across America (WAA) places over 400,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, with thousands more at over 150 other cemeteries around the country. WAA also holds a number of special memorial ceremonies beyond, such as at Pearl Harbor, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA. This year, they placed nearly 9,500 Maine-made wreaths on the headstones of all U.S. service members laid to rest at Colleville-sur-Mer in Normandy as

well as each of the five D-Day invasion beaches. This is first time WAA has sent veterans’ wreaths to be placed on foreign soil. This year’s National Wreaths Across America Day is December 15. Before then, a convoy of trucks filled with wreaths and escorted by police cars, fire trucks, and Patriot Guard Riders, will drive down through Maine on their way to Arlington National Cemetery. As part of the journey, there will be several local stops along the

way including one at The Kittery Trading Post on Monday, December 10 at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to come out and

Mark Rouillard NORTH BERWICK How often have we heard the phrase, “necessity is the mother of invention”? This is certainly the case when it comes to the inspiration behind the VertaStretch. From a young age Mark Rouillard, currently a North Berwick resident, had recurring back problems that were initially thought to be nothing more than growing pains. However, through years of increasing pain followed by subsequent injuries and multiple treatments, there was never any genuine improvement. X-rays and MRIs revealed that all

24 vertebrae in his spine were either fractured or had broken. A doctor explained that he was

My surgeon and the neurologist claimed that my back was in the shape of a 60-year-old man and there was nothing they could do for me.” said Rouillard. “I was 26 years old and discouraged, not able to work and with the outlook looking bleak. I decided that I was not going to just lie here and feel sorry for myself. It was time to
