WELLS The Town of Wells has a traffic advisory that will take place as follows: Beginning Monday, November 21, through Thursday December 8, Furbish Road will be closed from the point it crosses the marsh thru to the other side of the marsh to replace the river road culvert.

Furbish Road on either side of the marsh will be open to traffic.

The road will reopen on December 9 to traffic. Furbish Road connects Route 1 to Ocean Ave.

Depending on where Grondin will be working that day, there will be a detour on either School St or Cottage St. Sewer District (Grondin) - Shore Road: The sewer district will be working in and around the corner of School St and Shore road down towards to the pump station. Paving the trench from Obeds to the south of the project will be done.

Lucas realized that the stories of her ancestors needed to be included in her memoir and the result was a genealogical memoir. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The thing is, once the gene-

alogical story is learned, it simply canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be unlearned,â&#x20AC;? she says.

Interviewing relatives between sips of eggnog is just the beginning. Lucas has other suggestions for those who want to explore their family histories: â&#x20AC;˘ Check census records.

Every 10 years since 1790 the census has taken a snapshot of whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s living in the United States.

Valuable information can be found in census records, and you might even discover relatives you never heard about. â&#x20AC;˘ Sign up for a genealogy class. Many community colleges offer non-credit courses in genealogy that will help you understand how to research your family and interpret what you find. â&#x20AC;˘ Consider DNA testing.

People often think they know their ethnic lineage, but discover surprises when they have a DNA test. Lucasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; DNA test revealed that she is descended not only from people who hailed from England and Scotland, but also

the Iberian Peninsula. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It also probably doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt if you are a nerd about these things like me,â&#x20AC;? Lucas says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I found an ancestor who was involved in the Oklahoma Land Rush, so I researched that and found newspaper articles about the land rush. I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to put your family story in the historical context, especially if you plan to write a memoir.â&#x20AC;?

In Part Two â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Post-War England â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Lovely, a fine student, shares excitement at passing the exams to study to become a teacher â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the despair she feels when her dreams are dashed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was all set to go to college, but my parents broke up when I was 17, so I had to give up on my dreams. I cried and cried, because I had so wanted to be a teacher,â&#x20AC;? she said.

She also recalls her love of dancing, boyfriends, a broken engagement to one young man and her engagement and marriage to Desmond Parker, a Methodist minister, and their life on the Shetland Islands, where their children Kathryn, 55, and Christopher, 53, were born.

The family moved to Maine in the late 1960s. And here Lovely finally realized her dream

to become a teacher at age 37. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got my degree in 1974 and taught grades 3 through 8. Whenever Desmond moved churches, I got a teaching job wherever we went,â&#x20AC;? she said.

She earned a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree at age 50 in 1987 and completed her education career as an administrator in Maine and Connecticut.

Her book, she says, has fulfilled another dream â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to share her life in England with others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope that through the pages that follow, the reader will taste the flavour and catch the spirit of those momentous years,â&#x20AC;? she writes at the end of her prologue.

WELLS On November 10, a day before this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Veterans Day, Wells Elementary School held its annual Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day K-4 assembly to honor local veterans and those still serving in the military.

Numerous veterans attended this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event and were introduced and recognized before a large gathering of students and staff. First grade students, who made flags earlier to display, presented the vets with certificates of appreciation. Multi-age third/ fourth grade students presented them with personalized cards.

Primerano served from 1943 to 1946.

Kin Hamlyn of the Patriot Riders of America Maine Chapter 1 spoke to students about the importance the ordinary household items that they, their parents, and school staff had collected in a special collection that ended the day of the assembly. These items will be distributed to furnish housing for newly relocated homeless veterans. According to Marty Crier of WES, six pickup loads of sup-

plies, including furniture, was donated for this cause.

Several members of the Patriot Riders produced a banner that was hung over the front entrance to the school, marched in the assembly and lined the hallway from the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gymnasium as students and veterans exited.

As one might conclude, this assembly not only honors veterans but is a learning experience that aligns with the WESâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Core Values including Respect and Compassion. An important goal of the assembly is to teach students about the meaning or Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day and why it is celebrated and observed as a national holiday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think it is important for the kids to get a sense of history and (understand) how we got to

BERWICK On Sunday November 20, the Berwick Winter Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market will start a new season of farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; markets. Among the vendors will be students from the 'Plants Plus' Greenhouse at Sanford Regional Technical

Center School. These students, aged 14 to 18, have been involved in growing edible greens and other plants in their aquaponic system as well as in the high tunnel greenhouse and rigid greenhouse they manage.

The students have become experts on this system, and are able to perform water tests and adjust water conditions based on the testing, care for the Blue Nile Tilapia living in the 800 gallon system, and safely grow and harvest plants for human consumption.

Use a timer to keep track of cooking times, most notably when cooking a meal that takes a long time like roasting a turkey, baking a roast or simmering. Check the stove or oven frequently. Consider putting timers in different rooms so you can hear them over the music and party chatter.

Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers and towels away from the cooking area.

During the five-year period of 2010-2014, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 166,100 home cooking fires per year. These fires resulted in 480 civilian deaths, 5,540 reported injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage per year.

Overall, cooking equipment was involved in almost half (46 per-

cent) of reported home fires and home fire injuries (44 percent) and one in five home fire deaths (19 percent).

Thanksgiving is also the time when many people like to experiment with frying turkeys. NFPA discourages the use of turkey fryers, which can lead to devastating burns and other injuries, and

the destruction of property due to the large amount and high temperature of oil used. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to look for grocery stores, specialty food retailers and restaurants that sell deep fried turkeys.

Library Presents Father/Daughter Art Exhibition

YORK During November and December, the York Public Library is featuring â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scenes from the Backyard Revisitedâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Paintings by Jack Lewis and Heather Lewis.

A resident of York, from the 1990s until his death in 2012, Jack Lewis made his first appearance on the art scene in Delaware with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1936. He was assigned the job of recording, in pencil on sketchpad and in paint on canvas, the daily activities of three Delaware CCC camps involved in mosquito control. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was sent to the Pacific for the duration of the war. After returning from the Pacific, Lewis received his masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree and began teaching art.

From 1949 to 1976, he taught in Delaware schools and. continued expanding his painting oeuvre.

Several published books of his artwork feature forewords by no-

table Americans, including N.C. Wyeth and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Lewis's daughter Heather Lewis is an accomplished visual artist, teacher, and coach. Her life-long immersion in the arts began in Delaware observing her artist parents. Her interest progressed to formal fine art training at The Philadelphia College of Art, followed by over three decades of creating art for exhibition and sale. Passionate about

also helping others connect with their own creativity, she became a studio arts instructor and creativity coach. She has taught and conducted workshops throughout the Northeast for students from pre-school to college.

Arts multiple Ross Alan Bachelder, a Michigan native, has been active as a writer, artist, and musician since moving to the Seacoast New Hampshire/ Southern Maine region more than 40 years ago.As a writer heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s published essays, magazine articles, and poetry. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also written, produced, and directed eight musical comedy-dramas for young people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Happy Dawg Walks the Sad Manâ&#x20AC;? is his first book.

With the petition on change.org, the website said that petitions with a picture are six times more likely to receive signatures than those without a picture. The problem is that my cellphone doesn't have a built-in camera as it is a free, government-issued cellphone. I would like to use a picture from websites that have to do with bottle/can recycling,

but I don't know if I need permission from those websites to do so. Do I? If not, where may I obtain pictures for my petition if I can't get any from my cellphone? I don't use it and it takes up too much space to just have it hanging around. I appreciate any information you can offer. The good news is that Cortana only takes up 39MB of space, so it is not going to make a difference on your hard drive. To turn Cortana off, simply follow these directions. 1. Click on the start logo on your computer, then click on the "Settings" gear.

This was very annoying. I didn't make the association with the problem and the Add-on. I called my IT friend and he told me to get rid of the Add-on. He had run up against the "Offers4U" before. I got rid of the Add-on and that solved the problem. My question to you is, can you recommend a program to download YouTube that is free of hidden junk-ware?

Robert O. Donnell, Jr, 72 YORK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Robert O. Donnell, Jr. of York, died Thursday, November 10, 2016 at York Hospital. He was born in York on November 17, 1943 of parents Robert O. Donnell, Sr. and Winnifred MacIntire Donnell.

He graduated from York High School and Maine Maritime Academy.

Rod was a valued member of his community, owning several businesses, as well as serving on the York Board of Selectmen, York Shellfish Commission, and the York Hospital Board of Trustees. He was an active outdoorsman, enjoying hunting at the camp he built at 5th Machias Lake in Washington County.

He also enjoyed gardening and viewing wildlife, birds and his beloved ocean. He liked nothing better than helping out anyone who needed assistance in any circumstance.

Rod was pre-deceased by his parents and infant son, Adam. He is survived by his sister Regina Donnell and her husband Steven Gray of York, brother Timothy Donnell and his wife Rebecca of North Berwick, and three children, Alli-

son Donnell of Marshfield, MA, Zachary Donnell and his wife Stacey of Wells, and Jody Donnell; and his grandchildren Kate, Brian, and Norah. Rod will be missed by his special friend Margaret Montembault.

Walter Lane, 84 NORTH BERWICK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Walter Lane of North Berwick, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, NH. He was at peace knowing his three children were there with him.

Walter was born in Boston on April 10, 1932. He grew up in the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s South End neighborhood. He married the love of his life, Marjorie Lane, and together they raised three children. In 1988, he and Marjorie left Boston for the warmer climate of Florida. After 10 years

in Florida, they relocated back to New England and settled in North Berwick to be near their children and grandchildren.

In recent years, as Marjorie succumbed to Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease, Walter was her valiant caregiver until she passed away in January of this year. Together, they shared 58 years of a loving and devoted marriage. In his early years, Walter loved boating and fishing in the Boston area.

Throughout his life, he was a voracious reader and relished his New England Patriots, but above all else he was just happy to be helpful to those he loved - and to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;Papaâ&#x20AC;? to his grandchildren.

He is survived by his three children: Donna Lane of North Berwick; Kevin Lane of Dallas, Georgia; and Terri Lane and her husband George Gibson of North Berwick; he is also survived by his five grandchildren: THANK YOU ST. JUDE:

Janie Walne Goolsby Poodry NORTH BERWICK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Janie Walne Goolsby Poodry passed away on November 12, 2016 in Kennebunk. A distinguished contemporary artist and educator, she took her M.F.A. at Texas Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University in 1946, studied with Hans Hoffman in Massachusetts, exhibited frequently throughout her career, and was Associate Professor in the Art Department faculty at the University of Memphis for many years.

Born in Coldwater, Mississippi in 1923, daughter of William Arthur and Nettie Bramlett Goolsby, her siblings, now deceased, were William Arthur, James Edward and Virginia Goolsby. In 1950 she married the late Leonard Poodry and is survived by her children Deborah and Sage Poodry, treasured nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, colleagues and students.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, November 19 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., immediately followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick.

SANFORD â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Glema Roberts, in the arms of loved ones, returned to the Lord on November 14, 2016. She was born on August 25, 1915 in Skowhegan to Omar and Vera (Goodridge) Daggett. She attended school in Skowhegan where, in high school, she was a star basketball player, playing an aggressive forward. She was also on the track team and competed in the pole vault. She married her high school sweetheart, Adrian (Abe) Roberts on June 17, 1933. They had one daughter, JoAnn (Roberts) hill, who they adored.

Glema worked for many years as the bookkeeper for their business, Gem Auto Sales on Gem Street and later on Upper North Avenue. In 1955 she and Abe purchased the airport on the corner of Route 150 and the Dr. Mann Road where they operated Airport Auto Sales. Their slogan was â&#x20AC;&#x153;up over the hill, but on the levelâ&#x20AC;?.

Upon retiring, they moved to a farm in Cornville where Glema ran an antique shop.

She loved antiquing, refinishing furniture and digging for treasures in â&#x20AC;&#x153;ancient dumps.â&#x20AC;?

Glema lived all her life in Skowhegan and the surrounding villages. The last four years she lived in Wells, with her granddaughter Glema Fay and her grandson-in-law and favorite Gin Rummy partner, Paul Coughlin.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ The Nutcracker at STAR Theatre KITTERY Over Thanksgiving weekend, The Dance Annex will present its inaugural production of The Nutcracker at the STAR Theatre in Kittery. Artistic Director Julie Hebb brings this timeless holiday classic to the stage November 26 and 27. Featuring a brilliant cast of students, local professionals, and special guest artists, this magical production is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Hebb, a former principal dancer of New York City-based Rebecca Kelly Ballet, founded The Dance Annex, Studio for the Dance Arts, in 2012 with the aim to â&#x20AC;&#x153;foster sustained support for the dance arts.â&#x20AC;? The Nutcracker will be the studioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premiere full-length classical production.

Special guests will include ballerina Ruth Whitney as the Sugar Plum Fairy, who has danced with Boston Ballet, Teatrul De Balet Sibiu in Romania, and most recently, was a principal dancer of Festival Ballet Providence. Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performances will feature Carlos Molina, former dancer of Boston Ballet and American Ballet Theater, as her Cavalier. That’s why it’s important to have a financial plan in place to help make sure as much of your wealth as possible ends up in the right hands. It’s wise to seek professional advice from those who can guide you through the options, Fullerton says. Among some of the things to consider: • A will. Everyone knows about wills, at least in theory, but that doesn’t mean they take the time to visit with an attorney and have one drawn up. A Harris Poll last year reported that 64 percent of Americans don’t have wills.

• An IRA. Many people think of an IRA as the nest egg that will help them survive retirement, but these accounts also are one of the largest types of assets inherited by beneficiaries. If you don’t anticipate needing your IRA money in retirement, Fullerton says, you might consider a legacy-planning strategy that will help reduce taxes and increase the payout your beneficiaries will inherit upon your death.

“It can be items you own, such as your house, a favorite work of art, special dishes used at every family gathering or a family heirloom,” she says. You don’t even have to wait until you die, Fullerton says. Experiences also can be a legacy, such as taking a special trip each year with a different grandchild to give them memories that will last not only your lifetime, but theirs as well.

Studies show that more than 80% of heart disease can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, exercising 30 minutes most days of the week and eating healthier.

The American Heart Association says the first step is to determine your daily calorie intake with an app or online calculator, then adjust your daily calories into the healthy range. A good place to start is by eating more fruits and vegetables which are low in calories and high in nutrition.

$2.34 Million Awarded to Expand and Improve Health Care Centers and Workforce in Maine STATEWIDE U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have announced that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded more than $2,343,393 million in grant funding to a number of Maine health care providers and educational centers to recognize achievement in providing high-quality care and education, and encourage further improvement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Community health centers and other innovative care models help address the unique challenges of ensuring access to care across a large and predominately rural state like Maine,â&#x20AC;?

Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These grants will allow programs with proven success to expand their community-based health care practices and workforce training, helping to improve the health of Mainers across the state.â&#x20AC;?

The funding comes through health workforce grant

Weekly Recipe: Tomato-Summer or Zucchini Squash Casserole As the gardening season begins to come to an end, let" s take advantage of the remaining summer or zucchini squash in our garden as long as it continues to be productive. This is a wonderful vegetable dish your family and friend will love and when your garden in " nished, you can use squash from the grocery store from southern states to recreate this recipe. Use either summer or zucchini squash but don" t mix the two varieties.

Ingredients: 3- 10 to 12-inch squash, peeled 1 tablespoon of salt ½ cup of general purpose white " our 1 cup of olive oil or even better Truf" e oil ž Pound of thinly sliced Mozzarella cheese 3 medium size red onions, peeled and thinly sliced 6 of the biggest or 10 medium RIPE tomatoes, peeled, and coarsely chopped 1 Tablespoon of " nely chopped fresh Basil 1 Tablespoon of " nely chopped fresh thyme 1 tablespoon of white sugar Ÿ teaspoon of Allspice 1/3 cup of fresh grated or packaged Parmesan cheese

Directions: 1} Peel and cut your squash into ½ inch

slices. Place on paper towels and sprinkle with salt and let stand for about 15 minutes. Blot the moisture on the squash to remove excess moisture. Dust lightly both sides of the squash with your " our and saut" in ž cup of oil until both sides are golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

2} Cover the bottom of your casserole dish with a layer of squash slices. Next cover the squash with your slices of Mozzarella cheese and then another layer of squash and cheese, leaving gaps between the slices of cheese so the tomato mixture can penetrate the layers.

3] Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Fill a medium pot half full of water and bring to a boil. Drop in your tomatoes and when they begin to crack their skin, remove from the hot water, and place in cold water to stop the cooking and peel.

Coarsely chop and put to one side.

4}Heat the remaining oil in a fry pan and saut" the thinly slices onion rings until transparent. All the profits will benefit the Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk. 500 calendars have been printed and will be sold for $14.95. MEFoundation Awards Grants

ELIOT Marshwood Education Foundation (MEF) recently awarded two grants to Marshwood Elementary Schools in Eliot.

The first $3,380 grant was awarded to Central School 2nd Grade teacher Pam Mulcahey ...ACAR from page 30 favorites along of course with bouncy balls.

SPORTS Warriors Lend A Hand off the Field WELLS Organizers of the most recent All-4-Kids Consignment Sale at Wells Elementary School had a few extra hands helping them set up for their October 15 sale of children’s clothing and other items. It turned out that the entire Wells High School Warriors Football Team showed up at the WES gymnasium the day before the sale to do some community service by helping set up.

“We were asked by Pam Lear (PTSA co-President) if we could help set up,” commented Wells Warriors Coach Tim Roche recently. “It was game day and we had to catch the bus but,

according to Pam, we saved them a ton of time.”

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) for Wells Elementary School has been sponsoring and organizing this event since the fall of 2006. According to sale organizer and PTSA member Margaret Borkowski, this bi-annual sale has raised over $50,000 during the sale’s 10 year existence.

With funds generated from events like this, the PTSA is able to sponsor large annual events at WES including Colors Day and Starz for Broadway. PTSA money is also granted to teachers for requested classroom items.

Warriors Football Takes Down Undefeated Cape Elizabeth WELLS On Saturday, November 12, the Wells Warriors football team beat undefeated Cape Elizabeth by a score of 27-14, winning the Class C South

Championship game. Next up is the State Championship Game (Class C) vs. Mt. Desert Island at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland this Saturday, November 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Girls' Varsity Soccer Wednesday, Nov 9 Berwick 3, Concord 2 The Bulldogs traveled to Concord, MA to take on Concord Academy in their last regular season game of the season and came a way with a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs didn't have the best first half but were able to keep play in the Concord defensive end, and went to half time up 1-0. In the 12th minute Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk, ME) broke through the right side after Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) played a great ball to the corner and Annie turned the corner and drove a beautiful cross across the box and Christine Gardella (Haver-

hill, MA) got the only goal of the half.

Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) almost got the Bulldogs a second goal in the 35th minute when she caught the goalie off her line. The Bulldogs lacked some energy in the start of the second half, but Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) got the Bulldogs their second goal with an amazing shot from distance in the 48th minute. Concord wasn't going to give up that easily and earned two quick goals to tie the game 2-2, but Berwick rallied back in the 70th minute with a goal from Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) off an amazing cornerkick from Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH).

Sullivan, Zimmermann, Tess Varley (Portsmouth, NH), Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH), Adara Groman (Stratham, NH), Abby Reed (Dover,

NH), and Vanessa Leavitt (Haverhill, MA) all played well defensively, particularly in the second half.

Daisy Aromando (Ogunquit) relieveved Zimmermann in net and had a solid 55 minutes in goal with some key saves to help earn the Bulldogs the win.
