PNSY delivered attack submarine Alexandria back to the fleet approximately twoweeks early and $9 million under budget. Completion of the 280,000 man-day engineered overhaul established significant benchmarks in safety and firsttime quality, making Alexandria’s overhaul the fastest in the Navy’s history. “NAVSEA’s top priority is the on-time delivery of ships and submarines so that we can expand our warfighting advantage, said Vice Adm. Tom Moore, commander, NAVSEA.

“Maintenance wins like Alexandria highlight the amazing work and dedication of our shipyard employees and their steadfast commitment to our national defense. The project team, ship’s crew, and the entire Portsmouth Naval Shipyard organization utilized improved processes, innovative management techniques, and sound leadership principles to meet every major overhaul milestone on, or ahead of schedule with best-ever quality and safety records. Drivers Beware: It’s Deer Season on the Roads STATEWIDE Deer season is here and AAA reminds drivers to be on the lookout for animals on roadways across Maine. November and December are the worst months for animal collisions which can not only put a serious dent it your car but can also cause serious injury and even death. According to the Maine Department of Transportation there were 4,774 animal related car crashes in 2015. Nationally there are about 1.5 million deer-

related car crashes annually that results in over $1 billion dollars in vehicle damage. “AAA urges everyone on the roadways to be extra vigilant, but especially on rural, and wooded roads said Dan Goodman, manager of public affairs for AAA Northern New England for New Hampshire and Vermont. “Deer crashes are not only costly – they can be deadly. Deer and other animals are unpredictable and you never know when they might dash out in front of your vehicle.

As random as these collisions might seem, there are things you can do to improve your chances of avoiding one. Here are some tips to help prevent a crash or to reduce damage from an animal collision: Scan the road and shoulders ahead of you. Looking ahead helps provide enough reaction time if an animal is spotted. Also, remember some animals move in groups, so when there is one, there are usually more in the area. Good visibility is a must:

Use high-beam headlights if there’s no oncoming traffic. Wildlife may be spotted sooner when using high beams. This will give the driver time to slow down, move over or honk the horn to scare the animal away. High beams also help in spotting some animals’ reflective eyes. What if a crash is unavoidable? There are families who simply can’t make ends meet. York Education Foundation Presents the Fifth Scipione Award

YORK The York Education Foundation (YEF) originally established the “Henry R. Scipione Award to honor Dr. Scipione who was instrumental in helping to create and develop the YEF in 2004 when the foundation was first established. The “Henry R.

Scipione Award was initiated in 2012 when Dr. Scipione retired, and he was the inaugural recipient. YEF gives this award each year to an educator whose efforts serve to promote and advance excellence in education for students in the York Public

Schools. The recipient of this year’s award is Pam WhalenRoy, a Kindergarten teacher in the York School System. The award is given with an unrestricted grant of $500. Whalen-Roy has been described as one of York’s best educators. She is a graduate of

Northeastern University and holds two Master’s degrees- one from The University of Southern Maine and another from Lesley College. She and her husband, Phil Roy, raised their family in York where they still reside. She has taught in York for 39 years, touching the lives of close to 1,000 students during her career. Previously, she taught fourth, third and first grades. As quoted from a close friend and colleague, Charlotte Pierce, “Pam has always been

unbelievably patient, consistent and a master of making learning a fun experience for the students. Since she raised 5 children, each with very different learning styles, I think she always treated each of her students with the respect, kindness and accountability she would have wanted for her own kids. YEF invites the community to submit nominations for educators in the York School System who have had an especially positive impact on their lives. ...ROADS from page 6 intersection of School St and Shore Rd working north along the shoulder of the south bound travel lane of Shore Road. One lane will be open and traffic control flaggers will be there for local traffic that needs access to businesses or residences. Sewer District (Grondin) Shore Road: The sewer district will be working from the Sparhawk to the Library. Detours around the work-zone will be School Street and Bourne Lane via Route 1. Anyone trying to get to business and hotels within the work zone will still be able to, but may need to go around

via the detour to do so. The flagger will be given a map of the business within the work limits to try to help with this. As with everything, the first few days will have their growing plans but all will be done to try to make it run smoothly. In the location were the equipment is working, traffic will not be able to get around us so the use of the detour by non-local traffic will be key. ~ News ~ Habitat for Humanity Receives $5,000 from Saco & Biddeford Savings YORK COUNTY Habitat for Humanity of York County has received a grant of $5,000 from Saco and Biddeford Savings Institution to assist with their 27th home building project in West Kennebunk on land donated by the town of Kennebunk. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Cole Road Build was held October 2, 2016 and volunteers have been working to clear the build site of brush. Habitat for Humanity of York County serves hardworking, low-income families who show a demonstrated need for safe, durable housing, a willingness to partner by completing “sweat equity in the building of their own homes or the homes of other Habitat families, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. Saco & Biddeford Saving is committed to strengthening local communities through better housing opportunities and has supported Habitat for Humanity of York County’s efforts in the past. They recently

sponsored the new construction trailer. Having the trailer onsite has boosted construction productivity, improved efficiency on the build site and prevented tool loss or unnecessary damage. “Habitat for humanity doesn’t just build homes, they build communities, said Marc R. Gagnon, EVP Saco & Biddeford Savings. “We’re proud to join their efforts in helping hard-working people realize the dream of an affordable home that is well-built, energy efficient and part of a neighborhood. Josh and Tahloni Yearwood and their two young sons have been chosen as the Habitat Partner Family for the Cole Road Build. This is the second home building project for Habitat for Humanity of York County in 2016. The support from Saco & Biddeford Savings assists Habitat for Humanity in addressing affordable housing challenges in York County and helping stabilize families like Josh and Tahloni in an energy-

efficient home. “Access to affordable, safe housing is necessary for a family’s long-term financial stability and growth, said Amy D. Nucci, Habitat for Humanity of York County’s Executive Director. “We’re pleased to have the support of Saco & Biddeford Saving to help families like the Yearwood’s achieve homeownership and build a stronger, more vibrant community. Habitat has many opportunities to volunteer on the Cole Road Build, at the ReStore, on weatherization projects with Keep York County Warm!, on a salvage, in the office or with special events. Anyone interested in participating or donating to Habitat is encouraged to call the HFHYC office at 207985-4850 or visit the website at www.habitatyorkcounty.org.

~ News ~ About Veterans Day World War I - known at the time as “The Great Warâ€? - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.â€? In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations‌" The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11a.m. On October 8, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated:

Marshwood Middle Schools’ Veterans Day Celebration

"In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible." The school-wide gathering embraced patriotism with tributes performed by the entire student body and highlighted the dedication of those who continue to defend America’s freedoms and honor those who have unselfishly served America in the past. The ceremony featured various tributes presented by man of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Kennebunk High School Presents “Up the Down Staircase

KENNEBUNK ÒUp The Down Staircase,Ó from the book by Bel Kaufman, is a comedy about the zaniness of a New York City public high school back in the mid-sixties when schools were large, overcrowded, and understaffed. It was at a time when completing paperwork became more important than understanding and working with the student population. The system is failing the students so while the play is a comedy, itÕs not without a serious side. Sylvia Barrett, a first-year teacher at Calvin Coolidge High School, prepares for the first day

of classes to discuss First Impressions. She images a thoroughly engaging discussion with her students. Bea Schachter, a seasoned teacher, knows differently. She says to Sylvia, ÒBetter youÕd studied karate!Ó However, before Sylvia is totally worn from administration demands and student disobedience, she decides to set up suggestion boxes so that students, teachers, and staff can say how they feel and, if they want, keep it anonymous. While most of the teachers and staff think sheÕs just asking for trouble, especially since itÕs the end of the term, the truth is the opposite, for students have a chance to express how they feel. They finally have a voice, and a teacher they like. An outstanding ensemble cast features Seniors Madison Harakles, Ivana Mulcahy; Juniors Ana Dinino, Hannah Johnson, Evie Roop, Ellie Spinney, Kurt Stentiford, Brea Walker, Justin Williams; Sophomores, Nate Durham, Emma Flores,

Local Author Patricia Foley Debuts Children’s Book for Christmas ELIOT Author Patricia Foleyšs new children's book Ă’A Christmas Gift for Dora,Ă“ is out just in time for Christmas. Published by Seven Oceans Publishing, Ă’A Christmas Gift for DoraĂ“ tells the timeless story of one special Christmas, weaving together a Christmas wish, a magical doll, and a child's faith in dreams. In the story, Dora longs for the special doll in the toy shop window, but she knows that orphans like herself are unlikely to find wonderful presents such as the doll under the tree. She also holds a special dream close to her heart, one she has never shared with anyone. Can her dreams come true? Dora believes that at Christmas anything is possible! The book is soft-cover with full

color with original illustrations by Antonietta Kies and retails for $14.99. This is author Foley's first book. Ă’I originally wrote this story as a play which was performed at my son's school in December of 1988 when he was in first grade,Ă“ she says. Ă’I always wanted to convert it into a children's book and now that has happened. I hope the story's message of faith and the power of love brings a bit of happiness and Christmas joy to all.Ă“ Foley will be selling and signing her books at several local locations through the holiday season. She will be at St. Thomas Aquinas in Derry, NH for their 12th Annual Christmas Fair on November 19 at the Marshwood High School Holiday Bazaar in

South Berwick, on December 3, and at the William Fogg Library in Eliot, on December 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ÒA Christmas Gift for DoraÓ is also available on Amazon.com, through DoraChristmas.com, or by calling 603-205-4750.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Make the Most of the Stakeholder World

Businesses often consider it a top goal to provide value to their shareholders, but these days it may be just as important to concentrate on producing value for “stakeholders.” And businesses have a plethora of stakeholders, such as customers, employees, suppliers and local communities, among others; the sum total of which represents a business’ stakeholder world. How companies make use of those stakeholders – enlisting their aid in achieving the company’s goals – is a significant factor in determining whether the business will be a success, says Paul Ratoff, president of Strategy Development Group Inc. and author of “Thriving in a Stakeholder World: Purpose as the New Competitive Advantage.” “Every company experiences bumps in the road,” Ratoff says. “Companies that consistently overcome these challenges usually have some help along the way. Maybe it’s a banker who believes in the company. Maybe it’s key customers who support the business even when there are other easier options, or employees who are willing to make sacrifices for the company.” But it’s difficult if not impossible to get people to rally to a company’s cause when its goals are vague and its purpose less than inspiring. “The challenge is to have a purpose that’s meaningful and important to your stakeholder world,” Ratoff says. “What I’ve found is that many businesses start out with a meaningful purpose – they want to make a difference in the world as well as make money – but over time that initial purpose becomes a distant memory and business decisions get focused more on such things as profits and shareholder value.” If a company can identify what its purpose is and frame it in a way that is meaningful and important to its stakeholders, he says, that company can unlock the power and resources of its stakeholder world and “amazing things can happen.” “Companies with a purpose are on a mission,” he says. “It can almost feel like a crusade.” And if the stakeholders believe in and share that purpose, they can more easily be enlisted in that crusade. Ratoff says business leaders can harness the power and resources of their stakeholder world by:

• Utilizing all of the capacities of your workforce. Businesses need to get the most out of their employees. If employees are inspired by purpose, they will be more engaged in their work and be far more productive. • Working with suppliers who look out for you. If your suppliers believe in your purpose and join your crusade, they will always be looking out for your best interests. Businesses need suppliers who understand the business and are committed to something more than making money off your relationship. • Serving customers who are eager to help you deliver a better product or service. Your purpose is an important part of your brand value. Customers who share a similar commitment will be loyal and will pro-

mote your efforts. • Operating in communities where the difference you are making resonates with its leaders and they support your growth. When a business espouses a purpose that a community finds meaningful, the people within that community are more likely to embrace your organization. • Having partners and alliances that anticipate your needs. “One way to do this is to look beyond your current stakeholder world and notice which organizations are pursuing similar purposes,” Ratoff says. “Examine how their efforts can support yours and develop relationships that will support your business model and be a winwin for all.” “Every company has the opportunity to discover a pur-

pose that is meaningful and important to their stakeholder world,” Ratoff says. “If you’re selling a product or service that is in demand, then you are making a difference for people.

You just need to discover why the difference you make for your customers can be meaningful and important to others as well.” See STAKE page 19...

BUSINESS & FINANCE USDA Invests $427,000 to Help Maine Small Businesses Increase Energy Efficiency

STATEWIDE U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King recently announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will invest a total of $427,000 to help six Maine small businesses purchase and install renewable energy systems or upgrade to more

energy efficient equipment. The grants were awarded through the USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). “These investments will help Maine small businesses adopt cost-effective and efficient renewable energy systems that provide significant annual savings as well as environmental

benefits," said Collins and King in a joint statement. “By cutting energy waste, small businesses can improve their bottom lines, increase their competiveness, and better support their local communities. Local grant recipients in Maine are: KAPH Inc. in Eliot will receive $25,637 to help purchase

and install a 39.75 kW roofmounted solar array. Maine Textiles International, LLC in Biddeford will receive $140,295 to help purchase and replace textile dyeing equipment at the Saco River Dyehouse, reducing annual energy consumption by approximately 85 percent. Since 2009, USDA’s REAP

has invested nearly $13 billion to finance approximately 11,600 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects nationwide that in turn have reduced energy costs for 15,000 rural small businesses and farms. This year alone, REAP has invested a total of $237 million to support 423 businesses nationally.

3 Things Women Should Know if They Outlive Their Spouse

The importance of women taking an active role in a couple’s financial planning represents more than just jockeying over who gets to control the checking account. “Women on average live longer than men, which means they are going to need more money in retirement or else risk outliving their savings, says Cristina Acosta, co-owner with Nancy Fromm of Money Wise (www.moneywiseaz.com), a financial planning firm. “That means they have a lot at stake. And women – men, too, for that matter – often don’t realize just how long retirement might last. If you retire around age 65, it’s possible your retire-

ment is going to last 25 or 30 years. The death of a spouse can pose numerous financial difficulties. First, the survivor has to deal with the emotional issues associated with grieving, which means some financial decisions may be put on hold. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing, Fromm says. “You don’t want to rush into any decisions you don’t have to make immediately. But it won’t take long to start experiencing some of the financial consequences. If both spouses were drawing Social Security, one of those monthly checks is about to disappear. If the spouse had a pension, the amount of the check may be reduced for the survivor, or it could be eliminated. Acosta and Fromm have made improving the retirement outlook for women a significant

part of their work. They just recently launched a division of their company called Woman’s Worth, designed to focus on not only a woman’s finances, but also her physical and mental health, and her total well being. Acosta and Fromm say there are plenty of things worth knowing about finances before and after a spouse dies, from long-term care planning to tax minimization planning. Here are just three that women should keep in mind: • Seek professional advice. This is especially important for women who left finances up to their husbands. A financial professional can help you get a better handle on the options for making retirement more secure. “Find someone you’re comfortable with,â€? Acosta says. “You’ll want someone who can See SPOUSE page 19...

For women, it’s more than the money. It’s about understanding the emotional and even physical health issues that woman face when dealing with finances. Having an integrated approach to the planning process empowers women to address the connection between their health and wealth. • Protect your assets. If you’re nearing retirement or already in retirement, it’s critical to protect the assets you already have. Review how much risk you have in your investments and decide whether you need reduce that risk, and more importantly, validate whether your assets are laying the foundation towards a clear journey to achieving your dream-retirement lifestyle. “It’s vital that women appropriately manage what they have,â€? ...DAY from page 13 as the committee's chairman. The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned

the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Health & Fitness 5 Ways to Support the Bereaved during the Holidays Grief at holiday time can be the most difficult grief of all. Someone mourning the loss of a loved one may struggle to join in the merriment, be overcome by memories of holidays past or try to block out or avoid the celebrations altogether. It’s natural that friends and family want to step in to provide love and support, but just how you do that is important, says Lynda Chelde-

lin Fell, an emotional healing expert and creator of the “Grief Diaries series of books. “Don’t think that you need to fill the person’s every moment with holiday festivities, Cheldelin Fell says. “Grieving can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. They simply may not have the energy to handle all that celebrating. Cheldelin Fell speaks from experience. She was inspired to

help others through life’s roughest moments after her 15-yearold daughter Aly died in a car accident in 2009. In 2015, Cheldelin Fell launched the “Grief Diaries, a 16-volume series of books filled with true stories by people who have experienced loss and heartache, and want to offer comfort and hope to those facing similar challenges. Fell says that, during the

holiday season, you can best provide support to the bereaved if you: • Don’t force your agenda on them. Allow the bereaved to set the tone for how they wish to cope with the holidays. Honor their choices. Whether they wish to maintain their normal holiday routine, leave town or ignore the holidays entirely, resist the urge to pressure them to handle the holidays your way. • Don’t avoid them. Your absence will be noticed more

than you think. If the griever asks to be left alone, honor their wishes if it’s safe to do so. Otherwise, include them in the festivities and treat them as you would any other significantly injured guest: with kindness, compassion and gentleness. • Don’t pretend nothing has happened in their life. That only creates the elephant in the room, and invalidates their sorrow. “But don’t awkwardly See SUPPORT page 24...

Health & Fitness United Way of York County Celebrates $500,000 in Prescription Savings KENNEBUNK United Way of York County has announced that York County residents have saved more than $500,000 on their prescription medications, thanks to its multi-year partnership with FamilyWize, an organization focused on improving the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Through this partnership, the United Way has helped promote the free, easy to use FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card, which has helped more than 9.4 million Americans save more than $1 billion on their prescriptions. “People should never have to choose between putting food on the table or taking their prescription medication, said Barb Wentworth, President and CEO of United Way of York County. “That’s why we formed a partnership with FamilyWize. Their free prescription savings card can reduce the costs of prescriptions for everyone. It’s an ex-

tremely valuable resource for our community. The FamilyWize prescription savings card can be used by anyone, including people with Medicaid or Medicare, and not just people without insurance. The use of the FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card is unlimited, does not require any personal information from the user and has no eligibility criteria. FamilyWize cards immediately lower the cost of medicine by an average of 42 percent and potentially more for people

without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. Just by presenting the FamilyWize card at their local pharmacy, customers save on the cost of their prescription medicine, no strings attached. “We’re excited to see the

people of York County realize the benefits of our savings card, said Susan Gilmore, Executive Director of Community Engagement at FamilyWize. “We hope that they continue to use the card and share it with others, as it can provide a sig-

nificant savings. To take advantage of the savings that FamilyWize offers, consumers can request a card from United Way of York County or print a card from via their website at www. buildcommunity.org.

If you live or work with the bereaved, their sorrow can quickly deplete your own happiness. Give yourself permission to take time to enjoy the festivities. If you live with the griever, then carve out ways that allow you to celebrate in private. Even small ways can help, such as indulging in a favorite holiday treat or enjoying a night out with friends. “If you think you can’t make much of a difference, I always like to remind people how the power of one moment can change someone’s world,â€? Cheldelin Fell says. “One smile can change a person’s mood. One hug can change their day. That’s everything to someone in mourning.â€? Lynda Cheldelin Fell (www.LyndaFell.com) is an emotional healing expert, award-winning author, and a pioneering visionary dedicated to shedding compelling insight on relevant issues. She is the creator of Grief Diaries, a 5-star book series now over 450 writers strong, and is passionate about empowering people from all walks of life to raise awareness by sharing their own extraordinary journeys through sensitive societal topics.

Another Chance Animal Rescue

NORTH BERWICKMeet Gideon, a wonderful sweet adult kitty who came into ACAR recently from a local Southern Maine community where he was found living in a leaf pile. Poor guy was covered with ticks, hungry and extremely thirsty. We don't have much of a history on this handsome guy, but can speculate that he has had a wonderful loving relationship with people in the near past. We will never know whether he was lost accidentally or was dumped, but he bares no anger toward anyone. Gideon is just a furry loving

guy looking for love. Gideon has already been neutered, his vaccinations will be done this week, making him available for adoption on Saturday. This guy loves all the attention he is receiving, is very well adjusted and is so hoping for a new family before Thanksgiving. (He wants in on the turkey!) If you are the family or

WELLS The kittens that Safe Haven rescued from northern Maine are coming of age to be spayed/neutered, receive their final vaccinations and be ready to be adopted. Meanwhile, our foster moms are totally in love with each of them, so this is going to be a tough job! The foster moms are actually involved with making decisions who adopts their foster kitties. After all, who better to know the right home and family for the kitty they raised? If you’re interested in adopting, send in your applications as soon as possible. Download them online at www.safehavenhumanesocity.org or pick one up at our thrift store or adoption center. Call 207-646-1611 to schedule a time to visit the kitties at our center and to discuss meeting a foster kitty. We want

They are very healthy, active, adorable and will be fantastic family members!

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Fall in love this weekend! The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) is partnering with PetSmart Charities for their National Adoption Weekend. AWS will be at the PetSmart Store in Biddeford Crossing (208 Mariner Way, Biddeford) for a special adoption event Saturday November 12 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Sunday, November 13 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. More than 50 pets will be available for adoption over the course of the weekend, including dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Visit animalwelfaresociety.org

to see which pets will be available which days. Due to the popularity of some pets, especially puppies and kittens, AWS staff members will arrive early to hand out numbers to adopters standing in line starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. All adoptions are on a first come, first served basis. New adopters should bring a leash and collar (for dogs) and a carrier (for cats) or plan to purchase on in the store.

The Bulldogs traveled to Hebron and came away with their 10th win of the season. The Bulldogs added three second half goals after Hebron tied the game to win 4-1. In the 13th minute Berwick earned a penalty kick but it was not converted. Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) and Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) had good chances that went just over the bar in the 23rd and 24th minute. Berwick did not get on the board until the 32nd minute when Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) found Lila Roy (Newbury, MA) off a corner kick and the Bulldogs were up 1-0. Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) almost got the Bulldogs a second goal when she dribbled into the box and ripped a shot just over the bar. Berwick went into halftime up 1-0. Berwick came out strong in the second half, but in the 10th minute a Berwick clearance was blocked by the hand of a Hebron player and fell to another Hebron player who scored and the game was now tied at 1-1. In the 54th minute Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) saved a penalty kick to keep the game tied.

Berwick was determined to take back the momentum of the game. In the 58th minute Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) played a long ball over the top to Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) who scored what would be the game winning goal. In the 66th minute Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) weaved her way through the Hebron defense on the dribble and got the Bulldog's third goal of the match. ~ Sports ~ ...SCORE from page 32 the shot went just over. In the 78th minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) got behind the defense and scored her second goal of the game. The Bulldogs are now 10-5-1.

Saturday, Nov. 5 Berwick 5, Winsor 2 The Bulldogs earned their 11th win of the season under the lights vs Winsor School in the seniors last home game. The leadership of the three seniors really inspired the Berwick team and they came out determined and strong. Kate Marshall (York), Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) and Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) truly lead the team today with amazing defensive plays and long balls from Sullivan and great attacking and midfield play from Vatcher and Marshall. In the 10th minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) hit a rocket of a shot to the back post past the Winsor keeper off a pass from Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH). Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) had some key saves in the first 20 minutes and then played forward and had two amazing chances in the 25th and 26th minute to increase the lead, but the Winsor keeper made the saves. In the 34th minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) earned her second goal of the match, when she literally dribbled the ball almost the entire length the field down the left side and blasted a shot to near post upper 90 to increase the lead to 2-0. A minute later Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) got a pass from Abby Reed (Dover, NH) and Zimmermann beat her defender cut it back and gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs were determined to come out strong in the second half, particularly the first 10 minutes. Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) almost got her second of the game

in the 48th minute but the keeper made the save and moments later Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) found the ball and beat multiple defenders and poked it into the back of the net to make it 4-0. Winsor rallied back and was able to get on the board making it 4-1. In the 60th minute Christine Gardella (Haverhill, MA) hit a cross to Lila Roy (Newbury, MA) who flicked it on to Laura Hoy (York) for the one time shot that went just over. In the 62nd minute Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) beat multiple defenders and set up Christine Gardella (Haverhill, MA) whose shot went just wide. In the 63rd minute Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) got on the board with a great cut inside and shot to make it 5-1. Winsor did a remarkable job changing the point of attack and had a few dangerous counters in the second half. In the 70th and 74th minute Daisy Aromando (Ogunquit) had two of many key saves in the game. In the 77th minute Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) hit a half volley but the goalie made the save and in the 78th minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) almost got her third goal of the game. Winsor managed a late goal with a shot from distance that caught Aromando off guard and dropped just under the crossbar to make the final 5-2. The Bulldogs are now 11-5-1.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Is it ok to shut down a computer by holding in the button on the computer? Thanks, Paul Dear Paul, You should only shut down your computer by holding in the power button as a last resort. In the rare case that your computer is locked up and nothing works, the only thing you can do is either hold in the power button for about 6 seconds, or unplug the computer. If you can, however, the best way to shut down your computer is to use the shut down command in the start menu. This allows Windows to shut down correctly and do a little housekeeping in the process. There is one way to make the power button work

for shutting down your computer, and that is to make a change in the computer power settings. If you open the control panel (Right click on the start button if it is not listed in your start menu), click on “Hardware and Sound”, then on “Power Options”. In the left column, click “Choose What the power buttons do”. In the power and sleep button settings section, click the drop down list next to “When I press the power button” and select “Shut down”. Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window to save your settings. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I can’t seem to get updates for Windows 7 for some reason. I have auto update checked

but no updates, I check “look for update” but it keeps search to “no avail”. Is anybody else having difficulty as I am? Hoping for a resolution to my problem. Thank you, John Dear John, You are not the only one having update problems with Windows 7. Even I am having difficulties. If you are a fairly advanced windows user, you can try the WSUS Offline updater at: www.wsusoffline. net/ However, I have found that even with this tool, I still have to install several updates directly before the computer will resume automatic updates again. If you are not an advanced user, your best course of action is to bring the computer to your local repair shop and have them do it for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Every once in a while I get a popup about a Java upgrade. Should I do it? Thanks, Ann Dear Ann, This is a hard question to answer because, while it is safe to update Java, you have to be absolutely sure you are updating Java and not clicking on some malicious software pretending to be a Java update.

When a message pops up on your computer telling you to update Java, I suggest you go directly to www.java.com to upgrade to the latest version. On the Java website you will see a big red button that says, “Free Java Download”. Click on that button and follow the directions (there is a link to installation instructions on the download page) to download and install the latest version. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am starting up a homebased business and need to find an inexpensive [free is good] online contact manager software. All I need are the basics of contact management including quick contact entry and retrieval, a to-do list, that could possibly link to something like Gmail [this criteria is not really necessary]. For very many years I have been enjoying and learning a lot from your site. Thanks. Stew Dear Stew, Since you mentioned Gmail, I thought why not use Gmail contacts as your contact manager, and Gmail Tasks for your tasks. To access your contacts in Gmail, look in the upper-left corner of your Gmail page. Just under the word,

Google, you will see, “Gmail” with a down arrow. Click on the down arrow, and from the drop down list, click on, “Contacts”. While viewing your Contacts list, you can click on “New Contact” and fill out the information for you contact. You can also double click on any contact in your list to add or change information for the contact. You can create groups and assign a contact to one or more groups. Once you have your contacts set up, you can move on to Tasks. To access your tasks list, click on the word, “Gmail” just like you did to access your contacts. Click on the word, “Tasks” in the drop down list. This time, instead of displaying a new window, a small, tasks list will be displayed in the lower-right corner of your page. Click the Plus symbol to type in a new task, and click on each task to mark it as finished when done. I hope this helps you with your new business! Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at: www.askthecomputerlady. com/questions.
