Students Partner in Goat Island Green Energy Project By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer KENNEBUNK Goat Island has pending energy problems. The underground cable that brings power to the scenic lighthouse and historic keeper’s home on the island off of Cape Porpoise is beginning to break. But the problems won’t persist if kids from Kennebunk High School and University of New England in Biddeford have their way. This fall, KHS and UNE students are partnering in a pilot program to study alternative energy sources — tidal,

solar and wind — that they hope will eventually result in Goat Island going off the power grid and sustaining itself with green energy. They are enrolled in Gulf of Maine Studies, a new problembased course, taught at KHS by science teacher Melissa Luetje and at UNE by environmental studies professor Pam Morgan. The cooperative effort also involves Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, which owns the island, and the Gulf of Maine Institute, which is helping fund the project.

Nearly 40 students are taking the hands-on class and the KHS students, all seniors, can take it for college credit. Twenty-eight are doing so. Students visited the island several times this fall to collect tidal, wind and solar data using instruments built at UNE. In November, the KHS students will meet their UNE counterparts on the Biddeford campus to analyze data and share information. Students will also particiSee GREEN page 4...

Tender Loving Quilters Craft Comfort WELLS Grieving over the loss of anyone who was once part of your life, can be a long and complex process. There are stages one passes through that can take days, weeks, months or even years. For some, the pain never goes away completely and events such as debilitating diseases, violent deaths or suicides can test individual beliefs no matter how strong one’s faith might be. It is not uncommon to “fall to pieces” while trying to put the pieces of your life back together. And so it is with quilting. Quilting is a process of binding together many different pieces, to create a thing of beauty. It takes

time, patience, and some creative effort. A quilt can be purely decorative or functional to keep you warm. There are keepsake quilts that have been passed down through the generations that to some are priceless. The quilt I started as a young bride, is still not finished after 32+ years! But so much came together for me, and touched my heart, when I was presented a quilt made by the ladies who call themselves Tender Loving Quilters. Their mission is to create bereavement quilts. Led by a petite “powerhouse” of a woman, Carol Varano, they gather each week in Wells, to create a variety of quilts,
