Local Builder Assists Seacoast Family with Accessible Addition YORK – A local builder has taken on a second pro bono home accessibility project, to help another family of a severely disabled child on the Seacoast. This comes immediately following completion of his work on his first project. Jason Lajeunesse, owner of JDL Building & Remodeling of New England in Greenland, is now making an accessible home addition project feasible for the Chumsae family of York. By donating his own time as a general contractor, and assembling a team of subcontractors and vendors pledging to donate their labor and materials, the Chumsaes’ BARN (“Bring Accessible Rooms Now”) Project kicks off
Miles Chumsae and his family will have the benefit of an accessible home thanks to builder Jason Lajeunesse and his team
this week. Less than two months ago, Lajeunesse completed a similar home modification for
the Bowie family of Berwick (bowiehouse.wordpress.com). “The need for an affordably accessible home is real for families like ours, with a loved one who relies on us for everything,” said Michelle Chumsae, mother of Miles, an eight-year-old who requires total care and battles catastrophic epilepsy of childhood and brittle bones. “We love our 1770 York home, and just want to be able to stay here to care for our son. As Miles has grown, the safety issues both for him and for us as his caregivers have become more challenging, and more urgent.” “This connection to the Chumsaes, like the Bowies, is a door for me to provide community service in a way that
Berwick’s First Public Trail to Open BERWICK – During recent years and even further back, it has “taken a village,” so to speak, to help Great Works Regional Land Trust establish the town of Berwick’s first public trail at Grant’s Meadow in the Beaver Dam Heath area. On Sunday, Oct.27 at 1 p.m.,

Great Works is inviting residents, Town of Berwick officials, Eagle Scouts and other visitors to celebrate completion of the trail and opening of a new parking area at the Grant’s Meadow preserve. It is located at Diamond Hill Road/ Old Sanford Road along the Berwick/North Berwick line. “We hope many people will join us for the celebration when we once again thank the Bryans, other contributors, the town of Berwick, and Eagle Scout James Rothforte. Together, they have created a nice spot for enjoying nature,” said local resident Michael Wright. A lifelong Berwick resident, Wright managed the Grant’s Meadow Project for Great Works
Regional Land Trust as a Board member. Among the contributors who helped make the trail a reality, Bill and Carolyn Bryan will be there in spirit from their retirement home out of state. In 2012, they completed a bargain sale to Great Works for 28-acre Grant’s Meadow. The Bryans had previously donated an abutting 113acre parcel. The lands had passed down to Carolyn from her family, and an ancestor, Joshua Grant, hayed nearby fields in the 1800s. The town donated another twoacre parcel as well as a donation towards the bargain sale purchase. See TRAIL page 7...

We have two healthy young boys ourselves, who are already practicing service to others. North Berwick Girl Raising Donations for U.S. Military
Alyviah Paquette has set a goal to collect 200 items to ship to soldiers overseas (photo courtesy Brina Paquette)
By Ethan Bukowiec Staff Writer NORTH BERWICK – Eleven year-old Alyviah Paquette is a busy young lady. Between school, homework, gymnastics and play rehearsal, she rarely has time to herself. But the North Berwick native always finds the time to join the Pease Greeters in greeting and sending off members of the United States military at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease in Portsmouth, N.H. Alyviah first became involved with the Pease Greeters in August, when her Grammy

Joyce asked her if she would like to join in attending a greeting at Portsmouth International Airport. Paquette was hooked from the beginning, and she has not missed a week since. “I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t know what to expect, but it was amazing,” says Alyviah as she recalls her first few greetings at Pease. “I felt so happy seeing their faces.” It wasn’t long before Alyviah was able to convince her mother, Brina Paquette, into attending the greetings with her. The Fresnel Lens is Saved
By Brittany Davenport Contributing Writer KITTERY – The original Boon Island lighthouse Fresnel lens, was saved
from going back into storage with the United States Coast Guard. The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum, along with the Greater York Region Chamber of Com-
merce, held a raffle to raise money for the $2,000 insurance needed to keep the lens in the museum, for the next two years. The raffle prize of $1,000 was announced on Oct. 13. The winner, Alan Smith, a Kittery resident and ex coast guard member,
was made aware of his prize by phone call. “In the coast guard, I was responsible for checking on all the lighthouses in the New Hampshire and Maine areas,” said Smith. Naval Museum, is what drew him to buying the $10 raffle ticket. The second order Fresnel Lens, created in the 1800’s, was carefully taken down from the Boon Island lighthouse and stored in south Portland before it went into storage in Washington D.C. It was then given to the Kittery Naval Museum in 2000. “We started writing letters to see if we could get it to the museum and they said yes, they brought it up to us in April of 2000, in 26 sections,” said Museum Curator, Wayne Manson. The residents of Kittery, as well as members of the museum, believed that the lens needed a permanent place inside the museum. “We had a close relationship with Connie Small, the woman who lived on many of the Maine lighthouse islands, she thought Kittery was deserving of the lens,” said Manson. Kittery was also the home of two of the lighthouse keepers, Williams Converse Williams, and his son Charlie Williams. “Williams stayed out on See LENS page 6...

One hundred percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Dominica Orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Leanne Cusimano, owner of Amore Breakfast, and her family were first introduced to the director of the orphanage and the children while on a Christmas cruise to celebrate the 50th anniversary of parents, Tony and Phyllis. They arrived with eight duffle bags filled with wish list items including school supplies, clothing and toys for all of the children. The first Benefit was prior to the cruise, so a cash donation was presented to round out the wish list. Subsequently, annual benefits have taken place and Cusimano has traveled back several years in a row to volunteer and provide support to the school and orphanage, which continues to grow and has constant needs. Bring Your Own Bag York Launches Booth at Marketfest
YORK – In an effort to combat the escalating plastic pollution crisis - a new citizen action committee has formed to address the use of plastic shopping bags. Calling themselves and their effort, BYOB York - their mission is to reduce single-use plastic bags in York by encouraging people to switch to re-usable shopping bags.
Hannafords in York has been making an effort in this direction for years by providing bags for purchase and encouraging people to use reusable bags. A goal of BYOB York is to expand that kind of thinking throughout as many points of sale as possible in York. BYOB York also endeavors to help the community as a whole commit to the use of reusable shopping bags.
Janco Classic Wood Boilers Dover, N.H. 603-767-3729
BYOB York will introduce themselves to the community at Marketfest in York village on Saturday, Oct., 19. Re-usable shopping bags will be given to the first 20 folks to say hello and
make a commitment to use re-usable shopping bags. An African fair trade market basket will be raffled. York BYOB will have information on plastic bags’ environmental impact and tips on breaking the plastic bag habit success-
fully.
even ripped a patch right off his uniform to give to Alyviah in appreciation for her friendly conversation and honest kindness. According to her mother, Alyviah is a water bug bouncing from one group of soldiers to another, anxious to hear all about them. “She doesn’t even stand with me now,” says Brina. “She’s off talking to the soldiers without me. She is so comfortable around them.” Some greeting sessions at Pease can last up to four or five hours, and Brina will be the first to tell you that sometimes it is a struggle to make it every week, but Alyviah finds a way to convince her every time. Brina blames herself in saying that the apple does not fall far from the tree. She has been a long time volunteer and is more than happy to see her daughter following the same path. The two have used their ex-
perience as Pease Greeters as just another excuse to bond with one another. In addition to starting the collection boxes, Alyviah and Brina started making homemade greeting cards and get well cards for injured soldiers in infirmaries. There is no doubt that Alyviah is doing everything in her power to help those in the armed forces, but she will be the first one to tell you that she is the one benefitting from being a Pease Greeter. When asked about how she feels being a member of the Pease Greeters, Alyviah responded by saying, “It makes me feel really happy inside. The soldiers make me feel even better when they tell me how much they appreciate me coming.” The Paquettes plan to ship their donation of goods for soldiers at the end of October. If anyone would like to donate to the cause, they can do so by emailing the Paquettes at maple1@maine. rr.com or calling 207-752-6313. If anyone is interested in joining the Pease Greeters, they can do so by visiting http:// peasegreeters.org. The organization has been in existence since 2005 and has a current membership of over 4,000 people.
...PAQUETTE from page 1 “She hooked me into going and it is just contagious,” Brina stated. In visiting with members of the military and hearing about their experiences overseas, Alyviah decided she wanted to do something to help their cause. Just a little over two weeks ago, Alyviah and her mother stationed collection boxes at the D.A. Hurd Library and Town Pizza of North Berwick. Their goal is to collect 200 items that include toothbrushes, candy, hygiene products and nonperishable foods that do not come in a can. Alyviah’s dedication to the Pease Greeters is impacted largely by the relationships she has made during her visits. She currently writes to six pen pals stationed overseas and has collected a number of mementos that her new friends have given her from their travels. One soldier

dream of modifying their home for their son. Floor plans for the Chumsaes’ Pudding Lane addition call for the rebuilding of their uninhabitable attached barn. The new space will feature an accessible bathroom with a 5’x7’ walk-in shower for safe bathing of Miles, much-needed storage space for his many supplies and durable medical equipment, and a great room that enables Miles to easily use his walker and a new manual wheelchair. Miles’ father Stephen works as staff painter at Boston’s Omni Parker House Hotel, and mother Michelle runs her marketing start-up POP Communications (gottamakeitPOP.com) from home part-time. Miles’ dad will be handling much of the finishing work on The BARN Project interior. His mom is spearheading promotional efforts for the campaign. Eight-year-old Miles Chumsae of York is nonambulatory and requires total care. The BARN Project’s goals are twofold: to provide affordable modifications to his home so Miles’ parents can safely care for him there indefinitely, and to provide Miles with daily opportunities for learning and practicing independent mobility. Lajeunesse’s vision and dedication in mobilizing construction industry subcontractors and vendors is making this home adaptation feasible, at a fraction of the cost, for Miles’ family. Monetary donations to defray the cost of remaining building materials can be made securely via PayPal at theBARNprojectformiles.com or made payable to The BARN Project and mailed to: Kennebunk Savings Bank, 2 Hannaford Drive, York ME 03909. Industry professionals are still needed for the next phases of the project; those interested should email theBARNprojectformiles@gmail.com or call (603)418-8644. Groundbreaking is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19. Chamber of Commerce, Holly Roberts, came up with the initial idea to sell raffle tickets. “We sold raffles at the Farmers Market in York, the Kittery block parties, online, and mostly at the museum,” said Roberts. A total of 378 tickets were sold over the past year, some people bought multiple tickets to help the museum
The advertising of the raffle also drew people into the museum. “Lots of local people who were unaware of the museum have come in, and are now aware of the history,” said President of the Museum Trustees, Kim Sanborn. The lens will be proudly displayed inside the museum for at least the next two years. The York chamber of commerce and

Health & Fitness Free Household Lead Tests For Families of Young Children YORK COUNTY – National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is Oct. 20-26. To mark the week, the three York County Healthy Maine Partnerships are partnering with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MeCDC) to offer parents of young children who live in older homes a free home lead dust test kit. The free test offers come with an educational brochure. Families of children born in 2012 will receive the offer and brochure through the mail. However, any Maine resident can request lead dust wipe test kit online at www.maine.gov/ healthyhomes. “The point of offering these free test kits is to help our local families figure out if their home has a lead dust problem,” said Meg Nadeau, Project Director at Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition and York County Lead Poisoning Prevention Coordinator, “It will help them figure out what to do to keep their children safe from lead.” Exposure to dust that comes from lead paint in homes built before 1950 is the most common way children are poisoned by lead in Maine. Lead paint is often found in homes built before 1950 and sometimes in homes built before 1978. Lead poisoning can cause behavior problems, learning disabilities, speech and language delays, and lower intelligence. “York County has a lot of homes built before 1950. We are hoping that the families with little kids—especially kids under age three—who live in these older homes will take advantage of the opportunity to test their home for lead,” said Nadeau. If you live in a building constructed before 1950 you can assume your home has lead paint. That means you need to do certain things to live safely with lead paint to protect your children from lead poisoning. Here are seven things you can do to help protect your family: Once a week, clean floors, windowsills and tabletops with a wet mop or cloth. Always wash children’s hands after play and before meals, naps and bedtime. Frequently wipe down toys, clean stuffed animals and wash bottles or pacifiers. Routinely check painted windows, doors and floors for peeling or chipping paint.
Never dry scrape or sand chipping peeling or chipping paint. Learn how to renovate,
repair and paint safely before beginning any home improvement See LEAD page 14...

Keep your local care. If you want to keep your care with your local health care provider, we urge you to read this message. As part of the Affordable Care Act that President Obama signed in 2010, a method for all Americans to find affordable health insurance options goes into effect October 1, 2013 called the Health Insurance Marketplace. Here, individuals and small businesses will be able to compare and shop for health insurance plans. Those in southern York County, Maine need to know some facts before choosing a plan. In Maine, two health insurers have been approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance to sell policies in the marketplace: “Maine Community Health Options” and “Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield”. While both companies offer comparable pricing and coverage structure, only one of them offers coverage for services at York Hospital and with York Hospital physicians: Maine Community Health Options (MCHO). MCHO is a nonprofit, Maine based consumer operated and oriented health insurance plan whose products feature a range of benefit plan designs and a comprehensive statewide network of healthcare providers, including York Hospital. If you choose this plan, coverage INCLUDES care at York Hospital and with our network of physicians. The Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans on the health insurance marketplace EXCLUDE coverage for services at York Hospital. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield decided to exclude 6 of the 38 hospitals in Maine - York Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital, Rumford Hospital, Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Mercy Hospital - in its new narrow network health insurance marketplace plans. If you choose their plans on the marketplace, you will be forced to go out of the area for your health care needs. Why is York Hospital excluded from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Narrow Network? This was not a decision York Hospital made. We were never approached to join the network by Anthem. We have asked Anthem for an explanation as to why we were excluded and have not received a credible answer.
Please consider your options carefully when choosing a plan on the health insurance marketplace. Health & Fitness Old York Garden Club Considers Edible Gardening YORK – At the October meeting the Old York Garden Club members enjoyed a colorful and delicious presentation by Liz Barbour of Creative Feats appropriate to our fall foliage season. Her presentation stimulated all of the senses and love of gardening. Barbour shared pictures of her home cottage garden that utilized every inch of land to produce healthy and flavorful herbs, produce and edible flowers used in her “Creative Feasts.” Her passion for cooking and gardening was evident. The beauty of a garden requires us to slow down and appreciate the wonders of nature and is, in large part why the club works hard at maintaining the many traffic islands around town. In Barbour’s garden she espaliers her fruit bearing trees to maximize the produce from her small space and uses natural means such as the marigold to repel insects. Appetites were stimu-
lated by the colorful use of vegetables and flowers. Through-out the demonstration of cooking a butternut pear soup and edible flower and herb salad, Barbour shared some basic cooking techniques, knife skills and healthy ingredient combinations. She shared some secrets of the use of flowers as a garnish and at times additional flavor. Just imagine sorbet in a dish surrounded by a hollyhock flower -minus the stamen. For additional information about Creative Feasts, email lizb@thecreativefeast.com.

Health & Fitness Pets for Those With Allergies
People with allergies must learn to make certain concessions. This typically includes
avoiding those things, including animals, that can trigger an allergic reaction. Individuals who
tear up or start to sneeze around animals may wonder if there are any animals that won’t trigger
such reactions. Despite information to the contrary, there really are no such things as hypoallergenic dogs and other pets. Certain breeders may advertise hypoallergenic pets, but it is impossible to produce an animal that is safe for all. That’s because many animal allergies result from pet dander, which are the skin flakes from an animal’s fur or hair, and not the fur of the pet. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, people with pet allergies have supersensitive immune systems that react to harmless proteins in the pet’s dander. Some people are allergic to saliva from dogs and cats, or may have allergies to the sebum, or oils, in their skin. Although there are no guarantees that pets won’t trigger allergic reactions, certain animals could be a bit more friendly to those who are generally intolerant to animals. Dogs Portuguese water dog: This breed is active and has a coat that requires frequent grooming. The grooming process helps to wash away dander and oils that may contribute to allergies. Kerry blue terrier: This fun-loving, active dog is thought to be low-allergy because it sheds less dander than some other breeds. It has a soft, wavy coat that fades from black to a bluegray color as the dog ages. Standard poodle: This intelligent breed has a long hair growth cycle, which minimizes shedding. The dog lacks an undercoat, which also can alleviate extra shedding of dander-laden fur. Furthermore, poodles require professional grooming and frequent maintenance, which can keep allergen levels low. Bichon frise: Much like the poodle, the Bichon Frise is
less likely to trigger allergies because its short, curled coat makes it difficult for dander to escape. Lhasa apso: This small breed does not shed its coat and requires frequent bathing to remain clean. The combination of these factors can reduce allergen potential. Poodle mixes: Many breeds are being bred with poodles to create a coat that is more conducive to allergy sufferers. Poodles mixed with cocker spaniels or labradors may shed less fur and dander. Cats Sphynx cat: This animal is furless and could be better for allergy sufferers because it will not shed allergen-laden throughout the house. Still, it’s important to note that many cat allergies are the result of the Fel D 1 glycoprotein, which is present in skin secretions and cat saliva. There’s no certainty that the hairless Sphynx still won’t trigger a reaction. Devon rex cat: This breed of cat has a short, downy fur coat. Because it has less fur than other felines, the Devon rex cat does not need to lick itself as frequently to groom its fur. This cuts down on saliva-based allergens being deposited onto the cat’s fur. Balinese: Although this cat has long fur, it may be good for allergy sufferers because it produces less of the Fel D 1 protein than other cats. Siberian: Perhaps due to lower enzyme levels in their saliva, Siberian cats may produce minimal reactions among allergy suffers. This article was provided by MetroCreative. How to Reduce Your Risk for Diabetes Millions of people across the globe suffer from diabetes, a term used to describe a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood pressure resulting from the body’s cells not responding properly to insulin and/ or inadequate insulin production. According to researchers at Australia’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, if the spread of type 2 diabetes continues at its current rate, there will be roughly 439 million adults with diabetes across the globe in the year 2030. Though some cases of diabetes cannot be prevented, a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, occurring because the body does not use insulin properly. Initially, the pancreas will make extra insulin to account for the body’s resistance to insulin, but over time the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases as people age, and while there is no way to halt the aging process, there are many other ways for men, women and children to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes. Shed those extra pounds. Being overweight increases your risk for a host of ailments, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the American Diabetes Association, losing as little as 10 to 15 pounds can make a significant difference for people looking to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes. When attempting to lose weight, men and women should recognize that making lifestyle changes is a more effective
way to shed pounds and keep weight off than fad diets that may promise quick weight loss but tend to be less effective at keeping that weight off over the long haul. Successful weight loss typically involves a combination of physical activity and a healthy diet. Include physical activity as part of your daily routine several days per week, taking it slow at first if you have not exercised regularly in quite some time. As your body begins to adapt to exercise, you can gradually increase the intensity of your workout routines. Adopting a healthy diet is another way to lose weight and maintain that weight loss. A diet low in calories and fat is a good start. Men and women who need to lose a significant amount of weight may want to work with a dietitian and/ or nutritionist to create a meal plan that is likely to produce the best results and address any vitamin or nutrient deficiencies they might have. Focus on fiber. Adding more fiber to your diet is another way to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Foods that are high in fiber tend to make people feel fuller, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Fiber also helps the body control its blood sugar levels, and fiber can lower a person’s risk of heart disease. Many foods include fiber, but some high-fiber foods include beans, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Avoid refined carbohydrates. Studies have shown that diets rich in refined carbohydrates increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes, while additional studies have shown that diets rich in whole grains protect the body against diabetes. Researchers examining the results of several studies that explored the relationship between whole grains and
diabetes found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains each day can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 21 percent. Refined carbohydrates, which can
be found in white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes and many cereals, cause sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, which can increase a person’s risk of diabetes.

term results than short-term success can help you as you work toward your objectives. Respond to your investment “climate.” Farmers can’t control the weather, but they can respond to it. So, for example, when it’s been dry for a long time, they can boost their irrigation. As an investor, you can’t control the economic “climate,” but you can make adjustments. To illustrate: If all signs point to rising longterm interest rates, which typically have a negative effect on long-term bond prices, you may need to consider reducing your exposure, at least for a while, to these bonds.
Diversify. Farmers face a variety of risks, including bad weather and fluctuating prices. They can help combat both threats through diversification. For instance, they can plant some crops that are more drought-resistant than others, so they won’t face complete ruin when the rains don’t fall. As an investor, you should also diversify; if you only owned one type of financial asset, and that asset class took a big hit, you could sustain large losses. But spreading your dollars among an array of investments — such as stocks, bonds, cash and other vehicles — may help reduce the effects of volatility on your port-
folio. (Be aware, though, that diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Relatively few of us toil in the fields to make our living. But by understanding the challenges of those who farm the land, we can learn some techniques that may help us to nurture our investments. Silent Film ‘Nosferatu’ at Leavitt Theatre
OGUNQUIT – Get into the Halloween spirit with a classic silent horror film, “Nosferatu.” The first screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula,” will be screened with live music on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. at the historic Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St., Route 1, Ogunquit, Maine. The show will feature live music by silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis. Admission is $10 per person. The horror film event is being dubbed “Chiller Theatre” due to the summer-only building’s lack of a heating system. Organizers ask attendees to check the weather and bring along sweaters and blankets if a cold evening is anticipated. “Nosferatu’”, directed by German filmmaker F.W. Murnau, remains a landmark work of the cinematic horror genre. It was among the first movies to use visual design to contribute to an overall sense of terror. To modern viewers, the passage of time has made this unusual film seem even more strange and otherworldly. It’s an atmosphere that silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis will try to enhance in improvising live music on the spot for the screenings. “The original “Nosferatu” is a film that seems to get creepier as more time goes by,” said Rapsis, who is based in New Hampshire and ranks as one of the nation’s leading silent film accompanists. “It’s a great way
Last Weekend
Director F.W. Murnau told the story with strange camera angles, weird lighting, and special effects that include sequences deliberately speeded up. Modern critics say the original ‘Nosferatu’ still packs a powerful cinematic punch. “Nosferat” will be shown on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. at the historic Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St., Route 1, Ogunquit, Maine. Admission $10 per person; for more info, call (207) 646-3123 or visit www.leavittheatre.com. For more info on the music, visit www.jeffrapsis.com.

to celebrate Halloween and the power of silent film to transport audiences to strange and unusual places.” The screening is the final installment of the Leavitt’s 2013 Silent Film Series. Although “Nosferatu” is suitable for all family members, the overall program may be too much for very young children to enjoy. In “Nosferatu,” German actor Max Schreck portrays the title character, a mysterious count from Transylvania who travels to the German city of Bremen to take up residence. A rise in deaths from the plague is attributed to the count’s arrival. Only when a young woman reads “The Book of Vampires” does it become clear how to rid the town of this frightening menace.

KITTERY – Attempted murder, sexual betrayal, the theft of a controlled substance and plenty of laughs are just a hint of what Seacoast audiences have in store with Stage Force’s production of “Uncle Vana in Maine”, a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play, opening Nov. 1 at the Star Theater in Kittery. The beloved comedy-drama tells the story of Uncle JohnJohn and his niece Sunny, who run the Maine estate of Sunny’s semi-illustrious father, Alexander St. Brockman. When the decrepit Harvard professor decides to move back in to the house on the Androscoggin, bringing with him Helena, his trophy wife, John-John and Sunny’s placid, boring world is turned upside Cask of Amontillado”, “Hop Frog”, “The Black Cat” and “The Masque of the Red Death”, will change weekly to satisfy the appetites of devout Poe followers. down. Hopeless longings erupt and stakes rise when the Professor announces his intention to sell the estate out from under his own daughter and brother-inlaw so he and Helena can buy a seaside home on Mount Desert Island. Kent Stephens’ adaptation moves the story from the Russian countryside to Maine’s Androscoggin region and gives the dialogue a fresh, American feel, emphasizing both the drama and the humor of the story. “Why not set a Chekhov play in America at exactly the same period, in a comparable socio-economic milieu, losing some of the Russian cultural trappings that American audiences seem to have trouble with?” says Stephens. “I took advantage of the vigorous, muscular American idiomatic speech that was just coming into its own at the time Chekhov was writing to pay tribute to the muscular, vigorous Russian speech that English translators often seem unable to capture.” Stage Force also hopes the piece will introduce the Seacoast audiences to the unique history of environmentalism on the Androscoggin, connecting it with efforts to promote sustainable use of natural resources today. To that end, the company has partnered with the Kittery Land Trust, who will be co-producing a panel discussion after the matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 3. The Land Trust will also be mounting an informational exhibit on the same subject in the Morgan Gallery, which surrounds the Star Theatre. “Uncle Vanya in Maine” run at the Star Theatre from Nov. 1 through Nov. 10. Shows will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 p.m.. Tickets are $26 to $31. The Star Theatre is located at 120 Rogers Road, Kittery. KENNEBUNK – The Webhannet Charity Golf Tournament was held on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk Beach. The tournament featured a unique format of using only one club per participant, a gourmet pre-tee-off brunch, a $500 putting contest prize and a Silent Auction that included Red Sox and Josh Groban concert tickets. Net proceeds from the tournament amounted to $30,000. Half of that money has already been dispersed to three local
charities: Toys for Tots Saco, Community Bike Center of Biddeford and “Kids Free to Grow”Child Abuse Center of York County. The remaining $15,000 will be used by the Webhannet Charitable Foundation for future donations to deserving charities in Southern Maine. The tournament was not just about raising money. It was fun and unusual golf. With the sun basking on Webhannet’s lush fairways, 30 teams headed to the tees. Each participant held one club (either a 4-iron, 6-iron, 8-iron
High School Football Roundup By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer WELLS – The football season is nearing the end of the regular season and several area teams are battling for a spot in the post-season. Kennebunk High School’s undefeated Rams bring a 6-0 Class B mark into a Saturday date with 4-2 Westbrook. Kennebunk is coming off a 50-7 beating of Morse High School of Bath. Westbrook and Brunswick are all that stands between Ken-
nebunk and an undefeated regular season. Another school in the upper reaches of Class B is the Marshwood High School Hawks who are 5-1, having lost only to Kennebunk. Marshwood clobbered Gorham last week 71-0 and faces off against Morse Friday night in South Berwick. Also ahead for the Hawks is a game against long-time rival York next weekend in York. York, 4-2 and on a fourgame winning streak, downed Greely last weekend 35-21. The
Wildcats travel to Fryeburg Academy Saturday. Wells is 5-2 in Class C and goes against unbeaten Leavitt on the road this week. The Warriors downed Poland last weekend 38-29. Class A Noble High of Berwick takes on Sanford Friday night on their home turf. The Knights are 1-5 this season having dropped a 13-10 decision to Edward Little of Auburn last weekend. Traip Academy of Kittery lost a heart-breaking 7-0 game to Telstar last weekend and takes on Oak Hill Saturday at Memorial Field in Kittery.

In addition to 37 hole sponsors from individuals and area businesses, key sponsors included the Lighthouse, Kennebunk Beach Realty, HM Payson, Alisson’s Restaurant, Hillcrest Driving Range, Wink’s, Dairy Queen and Hurlbutt Designs. Additionally, Friends of Webhannet do-
nated $5,000. When the last putt had dropped in the hole, participants enjoyed hearty hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in Webhannet’s century-old clubhouse while bidding on more than 60 silent auction items. Popular items included a catered lobster bake, a cruise on the Schooner Eleanor, tickets to a Michael Buble concert and Bruin games. The silent auction alone netted close to $10,000. John Bauman, President of
the Webhannet Charitable Foundation, stated, “This fun and worthy tournament exceeded our expectations! We are most grateful to Mike Condon who headed the event, Beth Fossett who chaired the Silent Auction, along with numerous Webhannet volunteers who helped us make this tournament so successful.” For more information, contact Val Marier by emailing valmarier@me.com, or call 207-9673609.

goals against Portland, and when Ashley Tice and Claudia Folger also scored, the Hawks took a comfortable 4-0 lead into the intermission. Lindsey Poirier and Hannah Costin completed the scoring in the second half. Marshwood ends the season with an 11-3 record in Western Maine Class A action. Coach Truesdale named Folger and Hickey as the game’s most valuable players. Marshwood posted another shutout earlier in the week with a 7-0 win. Lindsey Poirier scored a pair of goals against the Knights. Other goals were scored by Abby Doyle, Ashley Hickey, Karissa Boesch, Ashley Tice on a penalty stroke, and Cassie MacPherson. Cassidy Smith had three saves in goal. Honored as game’s most valuable were Doyle and MacPherson.
SCORE BOARD
Berwick Academy Boys’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
A depleted Berwick Academy boys soccer team battled Kents Hill to a 2-2 standoff last weekend. With only 14 players on the active roster for the game, the Bulldogs still managed to gain and hold a 2-1 lead into the final five minutes of regulation, but the home team managed the equalizer with 3:51 to play. While Berwick struggled to establish consistent spells of possession, it was still Colin Gaynor who opened the scoring in minute 17 after Gabe Evenson broke across the by-line before slotting a nice ball across the face of the net. Stephen Sherbahn scored Berwick’s second goal on the end of a powerfully driven ball by Emile Lebel. It was a free kick that rattled off the bar and then off a number of body parts before crossing the line that brought the game even. While it may not have been pretty, the game reflected good efforts from both teams. Goalie Erik Wisniewski was credited with eight saves, and freshmen Jack McCraven and Aidan O’Shea played well in the back field, logging extensive minutes, and handling the ball well. Berwick was back in action We dne sday, playing host to across-the-border Class A foe, Exeter. Berwick is now 7-1-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the Eastern Independent League.
Berwick Academy Girls’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
The girls’ soccer team from Ber wick Academy upped its record to 8-3 recently with a 2-0 shutout of Kents Hill on the road. The first half was scoreless in this one, thanks largely to goalie Torieana St.Pierre of Portsmouth, who cleared away a bounder off the post and another off the crossbar. Berwick carried play in the second half but Kents Hill was equal to the task, holding the attacking Bulldogs at bay. In the 62nd minute Siobahn McDermott found Downey and Downey found the net. Liv Hurley hit some great corners, including one that found Kat Reid in the 75th minute, who tucked it into the corner for the insurance goal and her third goal of the season. The Bulldogs held a 13-0 advantage on corners, and a 13-3 advantage in shots. Downey’s goal was her fifth of the season, and third game winning goal. The Bulldogs hosted rival Pingree Wednesday.
Berwick Academy Golf SOUTH BERWICK –
The top four players on the Berwick Golf Team recorded two victories each last week as the Bulldogs defeated two opponents at The Ledges in York. Berwick bested Pingree School 4-2 af ter blanking Lexington Christian Academy, 6-0. The Bulldogs returned to action Wednesday at Stow Countr y Club in Vermont against Bancroft Academy. Round of the week went to Sam Zimmerman, who fired a twounder-par 34 against Lexington,

Joining him in the winner’s circle were Luc Linemayr (37), Brennan Santaniello (41)and Garrett MacDonald (37). Alex Hopkins (47) and Matt Marino-Babcock (52) lost their matches. Scores against overmatched Lexington Christian included Linemayr (40), Zimmerman (34), MacDonald (41), Snataniello (38), Hopkins (46), and MarinoBabcock (46).
Marshwood High School Boys’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
It was a long time coming, but the boys’ soccer team at Marshwood High School has posted its first victory of the season. Tuesday afternoon, the Hawks defeated Biddeford High School, 4-1 on their home field. The team now sports a 1-9-3 mark going into a Tuesday night game at home against South Portland. Haanssen Casey scored a pair of goals for the Hawks. He was joined in the scoring column by Devon Gilbert and Tobi Smith with a goal each. Alex Hatfield stood tall in the Marshwood nets making five saves in the victory. Earlier in the week Marshwood gained its third tie of the season with a 1-1 standoff at Windham. Devon Gilbert had a goal and Hatfield had 12 saves in net.
Marshwood High School Girl’s Soccer
The girls’ soccer team at Marshwood High School downed Sanford recently, 5-3, in a Western Maine Class A game. Marshwood’s Hannah Folger scored five minutes into the match off a cross from Natalie DuBois to give her team a 1-0 edge, but Sanford’s Vanessa Hodge scored five minutes later to tie it. Sanford then controlled the play for most of the rest of the half, but couldn’t finish. Marshwood’s Megan McLean assisted Folger 10 minutes into the second half to give the Hawks a 2-1advantage, but again Sanford responded, this time with a pair of goals for a 3-2 lead. Megan Fromwiller assisted Vanessa Dodge and Laura Kirkpatrick added the second Sanford tally. Then Tanya Thomas assisted Folger, who tied the game with 22 minutes left, and Folger figured on another goal assisting Natalie DuBois with 10 minutes on the clock. Fromwiller sealed the victory. Listed as outstanding for this game were Folger and DuBois. Ma r shwood is 9-2 for the season.
Marshwood High School Field Hockey SOUTH BERWICK -
Marshwood High School’s field hockey team put an exclamation point on its regular season Tuesday afternoon with a decisive 6-0 shutout of Portland High School at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Coach Lisa Truesdale’s Hawks now await the pairings and schedule for the upcoming playoffs. Ashley Hickey scored a pair of
Traip Academy Boys’ Soccer KITTERY –
The Traip Academy’s boys’ soccer team battled Freeport on even terms for a half last week, before the hosts pulled away for the 3-1 victory. Freeport took a 1-0 lead, but Josh Scheier scored with about two minutes to play in the half to draw the Rangers even at the break. Traip goalie Colin Macomber had a half dozen saves in the game. Traip, now 3-8-1 for the season, traveled to Waynflete on Wednesday afternoon.

happy to supply one. Phantom, as you can see in the photo, is quite comfortable hanging out in our kitty room, waiting for you to visit him. One look at his handsome face and “purrsonality” will make you want to adopt him. Phantom is one of a clowder of kitties that Safe Haven rescued that were once feral and in great need. Living at Safe Haven and being loved and encouraged to be social, he and his buddies have mellowed out and become remarkable love bugs. They’re

perfect examples of why feral cats should be respected and not killed at shelters! Phantom’s best friend is Tippy, and they want to be adopted together. From now until New Year’s Day, our socialized ferals adoption fees are waived to encourage you to adopt them and give them the home they’re so ready for – and deserve! Hurry on in to the AWS and find your new companion today! Gooder
This big 3-year old is better than good, he’s Gooder. He is a friendly and lovable boy who gets along with everyone. Gooder is an absolute doll. He loves attention from people, and spending time with other animals. Because Gooder is such an outgoing, good natured boy, it will be quite easy for him to fit in with just about any family out there. Gooder will melt your heart with her warm, affectionate, darling nature. Maddie & Emily Meet Maddie and Emily, an adorable pair of female Domestic Rats who would like to find a home together. These two gals are rather easy going and relaxed, needing only a cozy habitat with all the rat necessities to be happy. They’d love to get regular attention from their people too, even if they can be a bit nippy. Maddie and Emily would make welcome additions to just about any home.

Ask The Computer Lady
Dear Computer Lady, Do you recommend shutting down completely each day? What are the pros and cons? Thanks, Linda Dear Linda, I do recommend shutting down completely once a day. Here is why. As you use your computer, small errors can occur in the working memory (aka RAM). When you put the computer to sleep, or hibernate, you are copying the contents of the working memory (errors and all) onto a temporary spot on the hard drive, where it will be loaded back into the RAM (errors and all) when you wake the comput-
er back up. When you shut the computer down completely, you are not saving the contents of RAM, and when you start the computer back up, a fresh copy of files is loaded directly from the hard drive. This results in fewer errors, and a better working system. The only con I can think of to shutting down once each day is that you have to wait a little longer for the computer to start back up, however this is certainly worth it if your computer runs faster and with less errors the rest of the day. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Something I have never

seen before happens every time I turn on my PC. A black screen with white print comes up informing me “performing auto IDE configuration”. After awhile the screen gives me 2 choices – either press F1 or F2. Once I use F1 I can get on the internet but then I have nonstop “security alerts” insisting that there is a “problem with site security certificates.” This ends up blocking my access to the web site I want to buy something from, etc. Help please! Fred “Freddy” Ray Bragdon, 81 WELLS – Fred “Freddy” Ray Bragdon, 81, of Meetinghouse Road, passed away peacefully on Saturday Oct. 12, 2013 at Varney Crossing Nursing Home, surrounded by loved ones after a long illness. Bragdon was born on May 24, 1932 in Springvale, the son of Fred and Gertrude (Welch) Bragdon. He grew up in Wells, attended and graduated from WHS in 1949. After graduating, he joined the Air Force and served his country in Korea from 1951 to 1955. Later, he worked for Burton McAfee as a plumber, then at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for 25 years and retired in 1992. Fred attended the Wells Branch Baptist Church and volunteered at the Wells Branch Fire Department. He married Carolyn (Hasty) Bragdon on Oct. 30, 1959 and shared nearly 54 married years to-

Dear Eli, You have two different problems going on here. The first problem is that your computer is not remembering the information about your drives when you turn it on. This isn’t really a problem because modern computers have the ability to communicate with your drives and discover what settings need to be used for them. There is a small battery on your motherboard that provides power to a special memory called, CMOS which remembers settings for your hardware,

gether. They enjoyed a life in Wells with their three children that grew to include 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren with whom he loved to spend time. He also loved the outdoors. Fred could always be seen on a sunny day tending his beautiful lawn and vegetable garden. Bragdon especially loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in their activities and was a true fan. He loved sports as well and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He and his buddies were avid softball players in their younger years. After retiring, he enjoyed reminiscing with friends over breakfast outings. All who had the good fortune to know Bragdon will remember his kind heart, spunky spirit and that twinkle in his eye! Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Gertrude Bragdon. He was greatly loved and will be missed by his wife, Carolyn: his son Archie Stevens and wife Julie, his daughter Tamara McCormick and son Glen Bragdon; his grandchildren Aaron Stevens and wife Jennifer, Brandon Stevens, Brooke Stevens, Ryan McCormick, Meagan McCormick and Nick Bragdon; his great-grandchildren Tesfahun and Mulugeta Stevens; his sister Freda Pearson and broth-
along with the date and time. It is possible that the CMOS battery is no longer working. Some motherboards allow you to replace this battery, while others don’t allow access to the battery. I would suggest that you take your computer to a local repair shop for help with the battery. Pressing F1 just allows you to bypass the configuration screen. If your battery is holding a charge, you can press F2, then follow the prompt to save See COMPUTER page 35...
er Richard Bragdon; along with many other family and friends too numerous to include here. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Johnson’s Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in Fred’s memory to the Activity Fund at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, 47 Elm St, North Berwick, ME 03906. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center for their compassionate care and friendship. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home.
