Shelley was born and raised in Wells, attending the Eldridge Road schoolhouse, and later the Wells High School where she graduated as Valedictorian in 1952. After a career in nursing, she turned her attention to local history, joining the society in the 1970s before becoming its president. Since that time, she has written numerous books and articles about the history of Wells and Ogunquit, bringing colorful stories to life for residents and visitors alike. WELLS Four New England cottontail rabbits were brought to the Wells Reserve on September 30 as part of a long-term effort to rebuild local populations of this rare and endangered species. The bunnies were released by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W) into the thick, brushy habitat that suits them best. The New England cottontail is a shrubland and young forest specialist that requires thickets to survive. “There are many predators on the landscape

The Wells Reserve features excellent New England cottontail habitat that is protected from future development, the agency said in a statement. “For more than 15 years, we have been maintaining and creating new early-succession forest habitat to provide the right conditions for New England cottontails and other at-risk species,” said the reserve’s executive director, Paul Dest. “We believe great habitat diversity equals great wildlife diversity.” Avoiding Extinction The New England cottontail is currently found in six towns in Maine: Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Wells, Eliot, York, and Kittery. The state population is estimated at less than 300 individuals and IF&W lists the species as endangered. More than 60 New England

Senator Collins Meets with Former NASA Astronaut and Medal of Honor Recipient WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins met with Chris Cassidy, a York native and former astronaut who recently retired from NASA after 17 years of service. Captain Cassidy, who currently serves as the CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum, was accompanied by LTC William Swenson, who received the Medal of Honor in 2013 for his valor in the Battle of Ganjgal in Afghanistan. “I enjoyed speaking with

LITTLEFIELD

Chris about his most recent mission to the International Space Station,” said Senator Collins. “Mainers are incredibly proud of Chris’ extraordinary accomplishments over his three decades of service to our nation in the Navy and at NASA. He has inspired so many students across our state to reach for the stars and be whatever they want to be. I was also honored to meet LTC Swenson and discuss his experiences and heroism in Afghanistan.” Captain Cassidy attended York High School, the U.S. Naval Academy, and MIT. He served eleven years as a U.S. Navy SEAL and earned two Bronze Stars. In 2004, Captain Cassidy was selected for NASA’s astronaut program. During his

NASA career, Captain Cassidy spent a combined 378 days in space and completed ten spacewalks totaling 54 hours, 51 minutes. Cassidy’s NASA service includes a stint as the 14th Chief Astronaut. His final expedition was in 2020 as Commander of the International Space Station. When he joined Dr. Jessica Meir in orbit, it marked the first time in history that two Mainers were in space simultaneously. Captain Cassidy and LTC Swenson were on Capitol Hill to advocate for passage of a bipartisan bill introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) that would establish a memorial in Washington, D.C., recognizing Medal of Honor recipients. Senator Collins is a co-sponsor of the bill.

OGUNQUIT On September 11, the Marginal Way Preservation Fund celebrated the official naming of the Plaque Memorial Site along the Marginal Way, Serenity Point, and the installment of completed Plaque Four with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly named site. The Marginal Way Preservation Fund Board of Directors, local Town officials, and those who so generously donated to the non-profit’s Plaque Program gathered at Serenity Point and paid their respects to those honored at the memorial site. Loyal supporter and Secretary of the Fund, Barbara O’Leary, creatively led the effort to designate such a meaningful name for this important site along the Marginal Way. The special name of Serenity Point was given to

the site as it is evocative of the feeling one gets from experiencing a walk along the Way, and reminiscent of memories of loved ones whose legacies are honored along the coastal path. O’Leary was also honored with a Day of Distinction from the Marginal Way Preservation Fund during the event for her dedication and commitment to the non-profit and for her efforts in organizing the dedication ceremony each year. During the event, saxophone player John Melisi performed a musical tribute to all the lives lost and families impacted by the September 11 tragedy. President of the Fund, Carol Leary, provided a history of the founding of the Marginal Way Preservation Fund and the See PLAQUE page 35...

“Edge of the Land, Edge of the Water” Exhibit at Library YORK York Public Library exhibit “Edge of the Land, Edge of the Water” is now on view until October 29. The exhibit features three New England Artists with very different styles, all representing their views of the landscape. Stephen Harby, an architect who lives in York in the summer, is an expert watercolorist. His representational paintings include many of views of York and other Maine sites as well as views of sites in Italy, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. His fresh execution delivers a sense of spontaneity while the white of the watercolor paper suffuses the scenes with light. Toby Gordon lives and paints in Kittery Point. She studied painting and drawing at the University of New Hampshire and has taken workshops with artists Tom Glover, Wendy Turner, and many others. Her paintings employ the palette knife and create impressions of landscapes pared down to their essence and sometimes to abstraction. Her beautiful colors create a calm and reflective space.

Brett Gamache’s landscapes often include people in recreational or work settings. In his studio in Ipswich, MA, he composes very colorful canvases, sometimes executed with heavy oil paint. He simplifies the forms of his subjects yet conveys a realistic sense of light, action, and place. On a different note, the glass showcases at the front of the Library contain a series of delightful small sculptures of animals by Jeff and Carol Tollefson. Their experience making thrown clay vessels led them to hand-built work and then to sculpting their interpretations of animals—both natural such as monkeys, and fanciful such as dragons--in that same clay. These fired clay creatures would be a perfect accent for a home library shelf!

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I not computer savvy, so I have a question. How do I move a line or sentence in a document I create up or down? For instance, If I placed a large space between a line and I want to move the line up, how do I do this, or move it down. Thanks for your help, Joe Dear Joe, To move a line down, just click at the beginning of the line, and press your, “Enter” key until the line is where you want it. To move a line up, Click at the beginning of the line, and press the backspace key until the line has moved up to the position you desire. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your helpful hints for many years and appreciate your answers. On Facebook the box on the right hand side that is always there with the listing of those ready to chat is annoying. Is there a way to remove the chat list of names? I tried several things and nothing works. Thank you in advance, Sue Dear Sue, I’m guessing you are referring to the chat sidebar. That is fairly simple to remove (actually, you are only hiding it) if you just know where to look. In the lower right corner of the Facebook page, there is a search

box with a small gear next to it. Click on that gear. In the list of options that appear when you click on that gear, you can select a couple that will remove those annoying names. If you click on, “Hide Sidebar” it will remove the entire right column. This is probably the option you are looking for. If you click “Turn Off Chat” it will grey-out the list of people you could chat with, but it will still be there. If you click, “Show Ticker” it will display recent activity by your Facebook friends on top, with the list of friends ready to chat. You can actually put your mouse in the section between the two lists and drag it down. That way, you can still see the ticker, but not the chat list. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I don’t really know how to start except that I have been trying to get my drivers updated for at least two months and I can not get any success these companies that say that’s what they do is absolutely nothing. Everything I find tells me I have five outdated drivers. I need to buy a new printer but I bought two different ones and neither would work at all the repairman says its the driver but I have tried everything I can find online with the word driver written on it and I still don’t have a printer. My computer is all messed up in every way. Should

Receive a Text with a Deal? Don’t Click That Link! STATEWIDE Everyone loves a deal – including scammers. Con artists often offer too good to be true discounts in the hope that priceconscious consumers will jump on these “deals” without doing their research. Recently, BBB Scam Tracker has seen numerous reports of scammers impersonating well-known companies and offering COVID-19 themed discounts. How the Scam Works You receive a text message from a large, reputable company. The message claims that, due to the pandemic, the company would like to help people out by offering them an amazing deal. These range from free or discounted services to gift cards and cash. For example, consumers reported receiving the following text messages using this ploy: “COVID-19 REFUND. VERIZON COMPANY is giving out $950 to all users of our Verizon service, If yes kindly text your Verizon” or “Due to the pandemic, Hulu is giving everyone a free 1-year subscription to help you stay at home. Get yours I reset my computer back to factory setting? And if I do, will I have my drivers updated? I have an HP all-in-one with Windows 10, about two years old. Thank you so very much, Gladys Dear Gladys, Those companies that scan your computer and then say you need updated drivers, which of course you have to pay for are nothing but a scam. Any driver that you might need can be downloaded for free from the device manufacturer’s website. A driver is simply a software program that is used to control a piece of hardware attached to your computer. Your mouse has a driver, your keyboard has a driver, your screen has a driver,

here [link].” Of course, these messages don’t really originate with that company. They come from impersonators who hope to steal your personal information. If you click the link, you may be prompted to log into a lookalike website that scammers use to get hold of your login ID and password. With that information, scammers can access your accounts and even make purchases using your saved payment methods. My saved computer documents is littered with Google Chrome Docs that I can’t seem to reopen. How do I keep it simple and just save into PDFs? Thank you, Tom Dear Tom, It sounds like you are just using the wrong save icon. When you are using Gmail, you are looking at a web page. If you try to save something (like a PDF attachment) using the menu in chrome, you are saving the entire web page you are currently viewing, and not the document attached to your email. Here is how to save an attachment in your Gmail. 1. Open the email containing the attachment. 2. Scroll to the bottom of the email to view the attachment. It should be located just above the “Reply” and “Forward” buttons. 3. Hover your mouse over the attached document and you will see two icons appear, click on the icon that has an arrow pointing down. This will start the process of downloading the document. 4. Select the location you want to save the file to, and click the “Save” button in the dialog box. I hope this will help you save your attachments. Elizabeth

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Frederick Moyer Concert Opens OPA Season with Great Success OGUNQUIT The October 1 opening concert of Ogunquit Performing Arts’ 14th Annual Piano Festival turned out to be a very special evening with an unforgettable concert by international pianist Frederick Moyer in the much-improved setting of the Dunaway Center. It was a night of firsts: Moyer’s first public performance since the beginning of the pandemic; OPA’s first concert in the newly-decorated auditorium; and the first time a resounding Tchaikovsky piano concerto was played with a full orchestra in the 200-seat venue! And it was glorious. The first half of the program was a delicious variety and beautifully played – a Chopin Waltz, a three-part Fantasy by Mendelssohn, two piano pieces by Alec Wilder, and a concluding George Kelischek jazz piece. But it was the second half of the evening, devoted to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto #1, which no one in the audience will soon forget. Moyer is a full-time concert pianist who has played with major orchestras around the world. He is also an avid computer programmer who has developed software which allows him to play

in tandem with the recording of a symphony orchestra, but with the orchestra following his own interpretations. Moyer’s sound system vividly projected the full thundering sound and sweep of the Stuttgart Symphony, while he performed the virtuoso piano part with power and brilliance, bringing out the exquisite tonal color of the Steinway as its voice rang out over the orchestra. The final climactic crescendo brought the audience to its feet for a prolonged ovation – one which Moyer rewarded with a Rachmaninoff prelude as an encore. Adding to the ambiance of the evening, the Dunaway auditorium has become an attractive venue for OPA’s performances with a new color scheme of New England blue and beige, gold wall sconces, and a burgundy stage

In details on Bosnia, Sell will describe the tragic year of 1985 and the war’s end not resolving the conflict, and what the Dayton agreement did and didn’t do. With Kosovo, Sells illustrates that Serbs and Albanians are claiming the same territory, “the uninvited guest at Dayton,” and in 1999 NATO intervention into Kosovo ended Milosevic’s genocidal effort to change the ethnic balance. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Woodies in the Cove a Success OGUNQUIT This summer, a stream of vintage restored “Woody” cars rolled into town for the 10th annual Woodies in the Cove. The annual fundraiser hosted by the Historical Society of Wells & Ogunquit is the largest of its kind in New England and has become a beloved summer event on the Seacoast. After canceling last year’s show due to the ongoing pandemic, the Historical Society was thrilled to welcome 26 Woody cars onto the green in front of the Wells Beach Resort Campground. Cars came from as far away as Virginia and visitors were able to speak with the car owners throughout the event. People also voted for their favorite “Woody” car with three awards going to the proud owners. “I joined the Society just last year as their new Administrator, so this was my very first show,” explains Bryce Waldrop, “It was great to see all the beautiful cars and most of all to see our friends and visitors in-person. It was like a rolling museum.” A children’s activity table provided entertainment for families, and the Seacoast Street Eats food truck was on-hand for breakfast and lunch. A parade of the Woodies cars concluded the day as they rolled through Wells and into Perkins Cove.

“It was a great day, we had great weather and the attendees all had a wonderful time!” says Irene Crocker, Chairwoman of the Board. The event was supported by numerous local businesses and donations, which raised much-needed funds to support the continued operations of the Historical Society. The Society maintains the historic First Church Meetinghouse, museum, and research library and will be open through December 31 on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.. Hospital Welcomes New Chief Human Resources and Chief Nursing Officers

Nonantum Awarded ‘Best Place to Work in Maine’ Again! KENNEBUNKPORT The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management has named The Nonantum Resort among its annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” list for the 6th year. Not only a recipient of the prestigious award, with only 100 employers making the 2021 list, The Nonantum Resort is the only one in the hospitality industry to be named. Driven by results from an employee satisfaction survey, as well as employee benefits and workplace policies, the award is increasingly important in today’s job market where employee shortages abound and competition for staff is heightened. The award undoubtedly offers insight into how happy current employees are in their workplace, but also where job seekers may want to apply as they weigh their employment options. Hannah Lamprey, Marketing Coordinator at the Nonantum Resort, feels that the award is incredibly well deserved and reflective of the effort given by the entire team, as well as the positive tone set by Owner Jean Ginn Marvin and General Manager Tina Hewett-Gordon. “Coming out of the uniquely challenging 2020 season, we were unsure of what the 2021 season would bring. We faced

staff shortages, an unprecedented number of travelers, and somehow had to pull off fitting two wedding seasons into one. This had the potential to make for an awful 2021 work experience. However, that could not be further from our reality. Despite all that was stacked against us, we were able to lean on our managers and each other to create a collaborative win during our peak season. Each and every player on our team is equitably deserving of this award for that reason, and why it feels more special than ever to win this year”, says Hannah. And it’s not just the staff that thinks so; looking at reviews from guests during the 2021 season reflects a similar picture: “We know that many places are short staffed as was the Nonantum, but you would never

know by the professionalism and friendliness of the entire staff. We saw many staff performing multiple duties throughout a given day; we overheard the owner was doing dishes and the GM was waiting tables. That speaks volumes as to how an establishment is run with a focus on customers and staff” writes Carrie, an August guest who shared her vacation experience on Tripadvisor. This review, and countless others, further echo what the award signifies; The Nonantum Resort has been, and continues to be, a standout work environment where employees are supported, valued, and rewarded. For more information on joining the Nonantum’s incredible team, view their current employment opportunities at www. nonantumresort.com/jobs.

FINANCE & CAREER Maine’s Minimum Wage to Increase in 2022

STATEWIDE Pursuant to Maine law (Maine statute 26 MRS §664), effective January 1, 2022, the state minimum wage will increase from $12.15 to $12.75 per hour, based on data recently made available by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Maine law requires annual adjustments to the minimum wage based on the cost of

living index (CPI-W) for the Northeast Region. In addition to the minimum wage, the new “tip wage,” or service employee minimum wage, in 2022 will be $6.38 per hour. This means that service employees must receive at least a direct cash wage of $6.38 per hour from the employer. The employer must be able to show that the employee receives at least the minimum wage of $12.75

Grant for Downtown Historic Preservation

STATEWIDE The Maine Development Foundation (MDF)’s Maine Downtown Center program is thrilled to receive a $750,00 grant from the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grants Program, for the second time. MDF is one of only eleven recipients in ten states to receive this funding. Known in Maine as REvitalizeME Gen2, the program will provide grants for historic preservation projects that will foster economic development in Maine’s rural downtowns. “It’s wonderful that Maine has received this funding again and other downtown projects will benefit from it like we did,” says Michael Miclon, Executive Director of Johnson Hall in Gardiner. “We are grateful for the REvitalizeME National Park Service grant through MDF. The grant enabled us to repair our historic windows and masonry and really close the gap on our 5-year capital campaign for Johnson Hall, which is a downtown community hub and significant historic theater.” REvitalizeME Gen2 funds are provided by the Historic Preservation Fund, as administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior. The program offers grants to historic property owners for preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, or energy efficiency projects in the downtown areas of communities currently served by the Maine Downtown Center program. “Supporting our National Main Street and Affiliate communities by bringing historic preservation funding opportunities to them is one of the most important things MDF’s Maine Downtown Center can do,” says Anne Ball, Program Director, Maine Downtown Center. “We are grateful to the National Park Service for

funding the work we are doing in Maine.” Funding in the form of subgrants will be awarded through a competitive program that will be operated administered by MDF. These grants will provide desperately needed financial capacity to encourage infrastructure development and leverage private sector investment increasing the commercial, educational, residential, or civic use and value of the historic properties. per hour when the direct wage and tips are combined at the end of the week. More information on the service employee minimum wage can be found online at www.legislature.maine.gov/ statutes/26/title26sec664.html. The minimum salary threshold for exempting a worker from overtime pay is also based on the minimum wage. Starting January 1, 2022, the new minimum salary threshold is $735.59 may include physical preservation projects for historic sites, architectural/engineering services, and technical assistance. “This National Park Service program not only supports historic preservation, but also fosters economic development in rural communities,” said NPS Deputy Director Shawn Benge. “By funding the rehabilitation of historic properties, rural areas across the country will be improved and strengthened.” Grant applications and requirements will be made available in November 2021 at www. mdf.org. Grant assistance is provided by the Historic Preservation Fund and the National Park Service.

How COVID-19 Reshaped Corp. Culture

NATIONWIDE The outbreak of COVID-19 is radically changing how many U.S. companies operate. Public safety measures have closed physical offices and made remote working the norm. Travel restrictions have heightened the importance of efficient technology, communication and collaboration. Executives have had to pivot quickly, reorganizing and rallying their workforce to push forward in an unprecedented time. Some business leaders think COVID-19 marks a per-

manent turning point. And at the center of the seismic change is the reshaping of corporate culture – the beliefs and behaviors that influence how a company’s employees and management interact, says Chuck Crumpton, author of “The Jagged Journey: A Raw & Real Memoir about the Non-Perfect Path of Life & Business”. “The pandemic unquestionably will have lasting effects on corporate cultures,” Crumpton says. “There’s a growing sense it’s a fundamental shift, a new normal.

per week, or $38,251 per year. This is only one of the factors used in determining whether a worker is exempt from overtime pay under federal or state law. An individual can earn more than the minimum salary threshold and still be eligible for overtime. The Department’s Bureau of Labor Standards is responsible for enforcing the state’s minimum wage and overtime

statutes and ensuring that both workers and employers understand and comply with the law. If you’re a worker who feels that your rights have been violated, or an employer who has questions or would like to know more about the department’s free trainings, call 207623-7900, email mdol@maine. gov, or visit www.maine.gov/ labor/bls/index.shtml.

$750K to Support Seafood Industry & Jobs WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) announced federal funding for the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI). The Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded GMRI $749,815 for their Gulf of Maine Blue Economy Initiative, which has the goal of developing a collaborative commercialization platform for the marine-related start up sector. GMRI says the result will be enhanced global competitiveness of the Gulf of Maine seafood industry, high quality sustainable jobs, and a new generation of Blue Economy entrepreneurship. “Between changing ocean

conditions due to climate change and supply chain challenges brought on by the pandemic, Maine’s seafood and fishing industries need our support now more than ever. The innovation and collaboration on display at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute through their Blue Economy project will help build a more resilient Maine economy so these industries can not only survive, but thrive in a sustainable way,” said Congresswoman Pingree. “As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m proud to have been an advocate for this funding, which I know will make a difference for this important part of our state’s economy.” This grant was awarded through the EDA’s Build to Scale Program, created through the Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of 1980 to support technology-based economic development initiatives that accelerate high quality job growth, create more economic opportunities, and support the future of the next generation of industry leading companies.

Counselor Helps in Healthy WorkLife Balance KENNEBUNK Career and Wellness Counselor Anush Hansen, MA, MPH, LPC, has created a Work-Life Balance Assessment to help people find balance and wellness in their work and personal lives. The card sort assessment, which is available in hard copy and online, helps individuals prioritize the aspects of their life that will help lead to a more healthy, happy, and fulfilling career and home life. “When you’re feeling exhausted or burnt out it can be particularly challenging to find the time and energy to create balance and health in your life,” says Hansen. “The Work-Life Balance Assessment is easy to use, takes only 20 minutes to complete, and can be done on your own time.” A card sort assessment is a tool commonly used by counseling professionals. Hansen’s Work-life Balance Assessment has two components: a deck of cards and an assessment guide. The cards display career priorities on one side and personal priorities on the other. reers and reprioritize their lives. Much like many other people during the last year, Hansen found it challenging to balance her own work and personal life during the pandemic. While supporting her second-grade son in online school, Hansen did not have the time to see as many counseling clients as she had prior to COVID-19, but she was able to develop and design her card sort idea during free moments. There was no better time to create a tool to help people sort out specifically what they want and need to feel health, happiness, and fulfillment in their life. With nearly 18 years of experience in the public health field designing and developing health-related assessments and surveys prior to becoming a counselor, Hansen is well versed in assessment tool development methodology, and skilled in helping her clients identify and articulate the factors in their lives that lead to creating a better work-life balance. In order to create the career and personal priorities

included in the Work-Life Balance Assessment, Hansen compiled factors that came up most often for her clients as either promoting or hindering work-life balance, and started categorizing these factors within the eight domains of wellness and health. Field testing followed. Hansen collected feedback from career and mental health practitioners and a qualitative survey research expert to fine-tune her product. Anush Hansen is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Kennebunk, credentialed as a Certified Career Counselor by the National Career Development Association, and the owner of Kennebunk Career & Wellness Counseling. She received her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of New Hampshire in 2011. Upon completing her degree, Hansen worked as a counselor at the University of New Hampshire Counseling Center, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Counseling Center, and

1M People Have Received at Least One COVID-19 Vaccine Shot in Maine AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that more than one million Maine people have received at least one dose of a COVID19 vaccine, achieving another milestone as the state continues to confront the Delta variant. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), 1,00,500 people in Maine have received a first dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or a final dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Maine is the fourth best state in the nation in the percentage of all residents who are fully vaccinated, with more than 68% of all residents – including children under 12 who are not yet eligible for a vaccine – fully vaccinated against COVID-19. also continues to make progress in vaccinating younger people, with nearly 59% of youth ages 12-19 being fully vaccinated according to the Maine CDC. Despite that progress, like other states across the country, Maine has experienced an increase in cases and hospitalizations driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant. As of today, there are 177 COVID19 patients in Maine hospitals, 54 of whom are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 20 of whom are on ventilators. The Maine CDC reports that more than 85 percent of the people who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since January 2021 have not been fully vaccinated. The vaccine is available at no charge at sites across the state. For information, visit www.maine.gov/covid19/vaccines or call the Community Vaccination Line at 1-888-4454111.

...CORP from page 23 and from there as a company, being better able to work in new and more collaborative ways.” Crumpton explains the ways corporate culture will be reshaped in the wake of COVID19 and how leaders can influence those positive changes: Providing emotional support along with technical support. While technology is the key to keeping a remote workforce functioning at a high level, Crumpton says how leaders create a culture of mutual support will be a big factor in company culture and the employee experience. “You want to get people helping and looking out for each other,” Crumpton says. “Not every Google Chat, call or email has to be businessrelated.” More, and better, communication. Working remotely, with managers and employees at different locations, places an emphasis on focused and more precise communication – even over-communication if neces-

sary – to keep operations flowing, Crumpton says. “The use of video conferencing is very effective, keeping everyone connected and agendas targeted,” he says. “It increases responsiveness, attention span, and strengthens collaboration.” More of a family feeling. “Working from home personalizes the workplace, partly because you are working from your personal space, and the imaginary line between family and work is basically gone,” Crumpton says. “People are out of their shell now, more relatable. Colleagues and clients are happy to share a screen with their kids or pets in the background. There’s a blending of the personal and professional, and it’s liberating.” Better collaboration. “Your relationship with your teammates will improve,” Crumpton says. “Fighting a common enemy, the coronavirus, creates bonds in relationships. Everyone being in this together brings new levels of connection with colleagues and clients. You’re happy to see each other on screen during this period of physical isolation, and

that feeling can be brought forward when things settle down. The bond strengthens with teammates also by having worked together to solve problems and be proactive during difficult times. That means better collaboration and more enthusiasm for teamwork and shared success.” “This crisis has challenged us in seemingly every way,” Crumpton says. “It’s been sudden, profound, and lifechanging. Companies have been

forced to make major changes, and in the process, they’re seeing the workplace and the world differently. It’s a great opportunity for growth and positive, permanent change.” Chuck Crumpton (www. chuckcrumpton.com) is the founder and CEO of Medpoint, LLC, a global consulting firm serving medical device and pharmaceutical companies in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

introduction program started in 2017. The reserve was once a local stronghold, but the rabbit population declined until few or no rabbits remained. Concerted efforts to enhance rabbit habitat at the reserve have increased available thickets. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a place to discover. This historic site is Maine’s only National Estuarine Research Reserve, and is open every day for science, education, and public enjoyment. More than 30,000 people visit the Wells Reserve each year to explore seven miles of trails and the value of coastal ecosystems. The Wells Reserve is funded by Laudholm Trust (a member-supported Maine nonprofit founded in 1982) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The reserve is located just off Route 1 near the Wells-Kennebunk line. Advertise in

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Safe Haven’s cat care volunteers have been lovingly socializing seven shy kittens to prepare them for adoption. These adorable kittens are 5-6 months old, spayed and neutered, and have all their medical requirements. What they continue to need is patience and confidence boosting. This requires calmness in their caregivers, and a routine that teaches them that easy does it. Repetition is the key in training, and that’s what socializing is. It can be a slow process because fear is a big barrier to overcome. But these kittens are demonstrating more confidence and trust to make them ready to be offered to the right homes for adoption. The kittens are Friday, Sawyer, Windy, Woody, Katie, Foxy and Stormy. Some are black

and white, some are torties and calico. They’re from separate litters and are being monitored to see how they pair off. The right homes for these pairs will have cat-experienced people who live a calm life with

a regular routine. They’ll need people who are ready and willing to invest their hearts in reassuring them, showing affection, and enjoying bonding and playtime. Older children would be best, and of course only cat-savvy cats or dogs already living in the home. If you’re looking for a pair of

FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Kathleen J. Wilkinson, 59 NORTH BERWICK – Kathleen J. Wilkinson, lifelong resident of North Berwick, passed away at her home on October 2, 2021 after a period of failing health.

Outdoor Rosary Rallies in October PORTLAND The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. On October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary will be celebrated in honor of the Blessed Mother. October was the month in which Mary appeared for the last time to shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, urging them to “say the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” Many parishes in the Diocese of Portland have planned rallies, processions, or other events: Kennebunk - Franciscan Monastery, 28 Beach Ave., 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 16;

Sanford - Rosary inside of Holy Family Church, 66 North Avenue, noon, on Sunday, October 17. The Rosary will be followed by a special outdoor procession and prayers in honor of the Blessed Mother. It will conclude with a brief period of adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament; Wells - Wells Harbor Park Pavilion, 331 Harbor Road, hosted by Holy Spirit Parish, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 17. Any additional gatherings will be added to the list at www. portlanddiocese.org/holy-rosarymonth.

She was born June 6, 1962 in Rochester, NH, the only child born to Ralph (Punky) and Patsy (Grover) Bragdon. Kathy was a 1980 graduate of Noble High School in Berwick, then earning her CNA Certificate she began helping people at various nursing homes, including the North Berwick Nursing Home. For many years, she was a Customer Service Representative at Downeast Energy in Springvale and in Dover, NH. In 1984 she married Mark Wilkinson and raised their daughter, Ashley, in town. Kathy was an avid Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox fan, and season ticket holder for the Sanford Mainers. She enjoyed hiking local trails, camping and snowmobiling, collecting seashells and sea glass at

the beach and attending shows at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Kathy also loved to read and took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. She shared a special bond with her daughter and looked forward to their annual summer vacations on Vinalhaven. Kathy was predeceased by her father Ralph (Punky) Bragdon in 2018. She will be sorely missed by her husband of 37 years, Mark Wilkinson, daughter Ashley Wilkinson, and mother Patsy Bragdon, all of North Berwick; as well as by her best friend forever, Beth (Boston) Smith of Old Orchard Beach. An hour of visitation will be held on Saturday, October 9, 1-2 p.m. immediately followed by a graveside service in the Hillside Cemetery, High Street, North Berwick. Contributions in Kathy’s memory may be made to the D. A. Hurd Library, 41 High Street, North Berwick, or North Berwick Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 324, North Berwick. Arrangements are in the care of the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
